1. Quantum Systems for Enhanced High Energy Particle Physics Detectors

Abstract: Developments in quantum technologies in the last decades have led to a wide range of applications, but have also resulted in numerous novel approaches to explore the low energy particle physics parameter space. The potential for applications of quantum technologies to high energy particle physics endeavors has however not yet been investigated to the same extent. In this paper, we propose a number of areas where specific approaches built on quantum systems such as low-dimensional systems (quantum dots, 2D atomic layers) or manipulations of ensembles of quantum systems (single atom or polyatomic systems in detectors or on detector surfaces) might lead to improved high energy particle physics detectors, specifically in the areas of calorimetry, tracking or timing.

2. Encapsulation of Islets in Rough Surface, Hydroxymethylated Polysulfone Capillaries Stimulates VEGF Release and Promotes Vascularization after Transplantation

Abstract: The transplantation of encapsulated islets of Langerhans is one approach to treat type 1 diabetes without the need of lifelong immunosuppression. Capillaries have been used for macroencapsulation because they have a favorable surface-to-volume ratio and because they can be refilled. It is unclear at present whether the outer surface of such capillaries should be smooth to prevent, or rough to promote, cell adhesions. In this study we tested a new capillary made of modified polysulfone (MWCO: 50 kDa) with a rough, open-porous outer surface for islet transplantation. Compared with free-floating islets, encapsulation of freshly isolated rat islets affected neither the kinetics nor the efficiency of glucose-induced insulin release in perifusion experiments. Free-floating islets maintained insulin secretion during cell culture but encapsulated islets gradually lost their glucose responsiveness and released VEGF. This indicated hypoxia in the capillary lumen. Transplantation of encapsulated rat islets into diabetic rats significantly reduced blood glucose concentrations from the first week of implantation. This hypoglycaemic effect persisted until explantation 4 weeks later. Transplantation of encapsulated porcine islets into diabetic rats reduced blood glucose concentrations depending on the islet purity. With semipurified islets a transient reduction of blood glucose concentrations was observed (2, 8, 18, 18 days) whereas with highly purified islets a sustained normoglycaemia was achieved (more than 28 days). Explanted capillaries containing rat islets were covered with blood vessels. Vascularization was also observed on capillaries containing porcine islets that were explanted from normoglycaemic rats. In contrast, on capillaries containing porcine islets that were explanted from hyperglycemic rats a fibrous capsule and lymphocyte accumulations were observed. No vascularization on the surface of transplanted capillaries was observed in the absence of islets. In conclusion, encapsulated islets can release VEGF, which appears to be an important signal for the vascularization of the capillary material. The rough, open-porous outer surface of the polysulfone capillary provides a site well suited for vascular tissue formation and may allow a prolonged islet function after transplantation.

3. Areal Density Measurement is a Convenient Method for the Determination of Porcine Islet Equivalents without Counting and Sizing Individual Islets

Abstract: The determination of islet mass is important for the normalization of islet experiments in the laboratory and for the precise dosing of islets for transplantation. The common microscopical analysis is based on individual islet sizing, calculation of the frequency distribution, and conversion into islet equivalents (IEQ), which is the volume of a spherical islet with a diameter of 150 μm. However, islets are of irregular form, which makes this determination user dependent, and the analysis is irreproducible once the original sample is discarded. This routine technique of islet quantification was compared with the analysis of areal density measurements. It was assumed that the entire area occupied by islets can be expressed in IEQ without sizing and counting individual islets. Porcine islets were isolated by continuous digestion/filtration and purified by gradient centrifugation. Purified islets were stained with dithizone and were repeatedly pictured under the microscope with random area selection. A total of 51 pictures was taken from 11 different purifications and stained islets were detected by digital image analysis. The correlation coefficient (r) between both analyses was 0.977 with an underestimation of islet yield by areal density detection (slope: 0.75 ± 0.03). Areal density analysis per picture took about 1 min, which is about 10 times faster than the traditional method without increasing the method error (CV 2.1% vs. 2.7%). In summary, areal density measurements allow a rapid and reproducible estimation of IEQ without counting individual islets. It can be performed in a single step analysis without computer programming and is valuable for online determinations of islet yield preceding transplantation.

Abstract: The study of radioisotopes as well as of highly charged ions is a very active and dynamic field. In both cases, the most sensitive probes involve species trapped in Penning or Paul traps after a series of production and separation steps that limit the types and lifetimes of species that can be investigated. We propose a novel production scheme that forms fully (or almost fully) stripped radionuclei in the form of highly charged ions (HCIs) directly in the trapping environment. The method extends the range of species, among them radioisotopes such as F21, Sn100, or Th229, that can be readily produced and investigated and is complementary to existing techniques. Abstract: We present a hybrid imaging/timing detector for force sensitive inertial measurements designed for measurements on positronium, the metastable bound state of an electron and a positron, but also suitable for applications involving other low intensity, low energy beams of neutral (antimatter)-atoms, such as antihydrogen. The performance of the prototype detector was evaluated with a tunable low energy positron beam, resulting in a spatial resolution of ≈ 12 mm, a detection efficiency of up to 40% and a time-resolution in the order of tens of ns.

6. Forward emission of positronium from nanochanneled silicon membranes

Abstract: Positronium beam formation and manipulation are required in several fundamental experiments. Efficient positron/positronium conversion in transmission configuration would offer important geometrical advantages over the reflection one for these applications. A novel type of transmission positron/positronium converters, which consists of silicon membranes with pass-through nanochannels, was produced and tested. The amount of forward emitted positronium was studied as a function of the thickness of the membranes and the nanochannel size. A maximum of, at least, (16 ± 4)% of positrons implanted in (3.5 ± 0.5)-μm-thick membrane with a nanochannel size of 5–8 nm were found to be forward emitted as positronium. A similar maximum amount of, at least, (16 ± 5)%, was found to be emitted from a membrane (7.7 ± 1.3)-μm-thick with a nanochannel size of 7–10 nm. A preliminary evaluation shows that the maximum amount of forward emitted positronium with the entire kinetic energy distribution below 1 eV is, at least, 9% of the positrons implanted in the (3.5 ± 0.5)-μm-thick membrane.

Abstract: The Review summarizes much of particle physics and cosmology. Using data from previous editions, plus 2,143 new measurements from 709 papers, we list, evaluate, and average measured properties of gauge bosons and the recently discovered Higgs boson, leptons, quarks, mesons, and baryons. We summarize searches for hypothetical particles such as supersymmetric particles, heavy bosons, axions, dark photons, etc. Particle properties and search limits are listed in Summary Tables. We give numerous tables, figures, formulae, and reviews of topics such as Higgs Boson Physics, Supersymmetry, Grand Unified Theories, Neutrino Mixing, Dark Energy, Dark Matter, Cosmology, Particle Detectors, Colliders, Probability and Statistics. Among the 120 reviews are many that are new or heavily revised, including a new review on Machine Learning, and one on Spectroscopy of Light Meson Resonances. The Review is divided into two volumes. Volume 1 includes the Summary Tables and 97 review articles. Volume 2 consists of the Particle Listings and contains also 23 reviews that address specific aspects of the data presented in the Listings. The complete Review (both volumes) is published online on the website of the Particle Data Group (pdg.lbl.gov) and in a journal. Volume 1 is available in print as the PDG Book. A Particle Physics Booklet with the Summary Tables and essential tables, figures, and equations from selected review articles is available in print, as a web version optimized for use on phones, and as an Android app.

Abstract: Producing positronium (Ps) in the metastable 23S state is of interest for various applications in fundamental physics. We report here on an experiment in which Ps atoms are produced in this long-lived state by spontaneous radiative decay of Ps excited to the 33P level manifold. The Ps cloud excitation is obtained with a UV laser pulse in an experimental vacuum chamber in presence of guiding magnetic field of 25mT and an average electric field of 300Vcm−1. The evidence of the 23S state production is obtained to the 3.6σ level of statistical significance using a novel analysis technique of the single-shot positronium annihilation lifetime spectra. The dynamic of the Ps population on the involved levels has been studied with a rate equation model.

Abstract: International audience; Studies of antimatter are important for understanding our universe at a fundamental level. There are still unsolved problems, such as the matter-antimatter asymmetry in the universe. The AEgIS experiment at CERN aims at measuring the gravitational fall of antihydrogen in order to determine the gravitational force on antimatter. The proposed method will make use of a position-sensitive detector to measure the annihilation point of antihydrogen. Such a detector must be able to tag the antiproton, measure its time of arrival and reconstruct its annihilation point with high precision in the vertical direction. This work explores a new method for tagging antiprotons and reconstructing their annihilation point. Antiprotons from the Antiproton Decelerator at CERN were used to obtain data on direct annihilations on the surface of a silicon pixel sensor with Timepix3 readout. These data were used to develop and verify a detector response model for annihilation of antiprotons in this detector. Using this model and the antiproton data it is shown that a tagging efficiency of 50± 10% and a vertical position resolution of 22 ± 0.5 μm can be obtained.

Abstract: Following percutaneous coronary intervention, vascular closure devices (VCDs) are increasingly used to reduce time to ambulation, enhance patient comfort, and reduce potential complications compared with traditional manual compression. Newer techniques include complicated, more or less automated suture devices, local application of pads or the use of metal clips and staples. These techniques often have the disadvantage of being time consuming, expensive or not efficient enough. The VCD failure rate in association with vascular complications of 2.0-9.5%, depending on the type of VCD, is still not acceptable. Therefore, the aim of this study is to develop a self-expanding quick vascular closure device (QVCD) made from a bioabsorbable elastic polymer that can be easily applied through the placed introducer sheath. Bioabsorbable block-co-polymers were synthesized and the chemical and mechanical degradation were determined by in vitro tests. The best fitting polymer was selected for further investigation and for microinjection moulding. After comprehensive haemocompatibility analyses in vitro, QVCDs were implanted in arterial vessels following arteriotomy for different time points in sheep to investigate the healing process. The in vivo tests proved that the new QVCD can be safely placed in the arteriotomy hole through the existing sheath instantly sealing the vessel. The degradation time of 14 days found in vitro was sufficient for vessel healing. After 4 weeks, the remaining QVCD material was covered by neointima. Overall, our experiments showed the safety and feasibility of applying this novel QVCD through an existing arterial sheath and hence encourage future work with larger calibers.

Abstract: The efficient production of cold antihydrogen atoms in particle traps at CERN’s Antiproton Decelerator has opened up the possibility of performing direct measurements of the Earth’s gravitational acceleration on purely antimatter bodies. The goal of the AEgIS collaboration is to measure the value of g for antimatter using a pulsed source of cold antihydrogen and a Moiré deflectometer/Talbot–Lau interferometer. The same antihydrogen beam is also very well suited to measuring precisely the ground-state hyperfine splitting of the anti-atom. The antihydrogen formation mechanism chosen by AEgIS is resonant charge exchange between cold antiprotons and Rydberg positronium. A series of technical developments regarding positrons and positronium (Ps formation in a dedicated room-temperature target, spectroscopy of the n =1–3 and n =3–15 transitions in Ps, Ps formation in a target at 10 K inside the 1 T magnetic field of the experiment) as well as antiprotons (high-efficiency trapping of , radial compression to sub-millimetre radii of mixed plasmas in 1 T field, high-efficiency transfer of to the antihydrogen production trap using an in-flight launch and recapture procedure) were successfully implemented. Two further critical steps that are germane mainly to charge exchange formation of antihydrogen—cooling of antiprotons and formation of a beam of antihydrogen—are being addressed in parallel. The coming of ELENA will allow, in the very near future, the number of trappable antiprotons to be increased by more than a factor of 50. For the antihydrogen production scheme chosen by AEgIS, this will be reflected in a corresponding increase of produced antihydrogen atoms, leading to a significant reduction of measurement times and providing a path towards high-precision measurements. Abstract: Abstract We describe a multi-step “rotating wall” compression of a mixed cold antiproton–electron non-neutral plasma in a 4.46 T Penning–Malmberg trap developed in the context of the AEḡIS experiment at CERN. Such traps are routinely used for the preparation of cold antiprotons suitable for antihydrogen production. A tenfold antiproton radius compression has been achieved, with a minimum antiproton radius of only 0.17 mm. We describe the experimental conditions necessary to perform such a compression: minimizing the tails of the electron density distribution is paramount to ensure that the antiproton density distribution follows that of the electrons. Such electron density tails are remnants of rotating wall compression and in many cases can remain unnoticed. We observe that the compression dynamics for a pure electron plasma behaves the same way as that of a mixed antiproton and electron plasma. Thanks to this optimized compression method and the high single shot antiproton catching efficiency, we observe for the first time cold and dense non-neutral antiproton plasmas with particle densities n ≥ 1013 m−3, which pave the way for an efficient pulsed antihydrogen production in AEḡIS. Abstract: International audience; The AEgIS (Antimatter Experiment: Gravity, Interferometry, Spectroscopy) is a CERN based experiment with the central aim to measure directly the gravitational acceleration of antihydrogen. Antihydrogen atoms will be produced via charge exchange reactions which will consist of Rydberg-excited positronium atoms sent to cooled antiprotons within an electromagnetic trap. The resulting Rydberg antihydrogen atoms will then be horizontally accelerated by an electric field gradient (Stark effect), they will then pass through a moiré deflectometer. The vertical deflection caused by the Earth's gravitational field will test for the first time the Weak Equivalence Principle for antimatter. Detection will be undertaken via a position sensitive detector. Around $10^3$ antihydrogen atoms are needed for the gravitational measurement to be completed. The present status, current achievements and results will be presented, with special attention toward the laser excitation of positronium (Ps) to the $n=3$ state and the production of Ps atoms in the transmission geometry.

Abstract: The main goal of the AEgIS experiment at CERN is to test the weak equivalence principle for antimatter. We will measure the Earth's gravitational acceleration g with antihydrogen atoms being launched in a horizontal vacuum tube and traversing a moiré deflectometer. We intend to use a position sensitive device made of nuclear emulsions (combined with a time-of-flight detector such as silicon μ-strips) to measure precisely their annihilation points at the end of the tube. The goal is to determine g with a 1% relative accuracy. In 2012 we tested emulsion films in vacuum and at room temperature with low energy antiprotons from the CERN antiproton decelerator. First results on the expected performance for AEgIS are presented.

Abstract: The subjects presented here are very different. Their common feature is that they all involve quantum phenomena in a gravitational field: gravitational quantum states of ultracold antihydrogen above a material surface and measuring a gravitational interaction of antihydrogen in AEGIS, a quantum trampoline for ultracold atoms, and a hypothesis on naturally occurring gravitational quantum states, an Eotvos-type experiment with cold neutrons and others. Considering them together, however, we could learn that they have many common points both in physics and in methodology.

Abstract: AE¯gIS experiment’s main goal is to measure the local gravitational acceleration of antihydrogen ¯g and thus perform a direct test of the weak equivalence principle with antimatter. In the first phase of the experiment the aim is to measure ¯g with 1% relative precision. This paper presents the antihydrogen production method and a description of some components of the experiment, which are necessary for the gravity measurement. Current status of the AE¯gIS experimental apparatus is presented and recent commissioning results with antiprotons are outlined. In conclusion we discuss the short-term goals of the AE¯gIS collaboration that will pave the way for the first gravity measurement in the near future.

Abstract: International audience; The principal aim of the AEgIS experiment at CERN is to measure the acceleration of antihydrogen due to Earth's gravitational field. This would be a test of the Weak Equivalence Principle, which states that all bodies fall with the same acceleration independently of their mass and composition. The effect of Earth's gravitational field on antimatter will be determined by measuring the deflection of the path of the antihydrogen from a straight line. The position of the antihydrogen will be found by detecting its annihilation on the surface of a silicon detector. The gravitational measurement in AEgIS will be performed with a gravity module, which includes the silicon detector, an emulsion detector and a scintillating fibre time-of-flight detector. As the experiment attempts to determine the gravitational acceleration with a precision of 1%, a position resolution better than 10 μm is required. Here we present the results of a study of antiproton annihilations in a 3D silicon pixel sensor and compare the results with a previous study using a monolithic active pixel sensor. This work is part of a larger study on different silicon sensor technologies needed for the development of a silicon position detector for the AEgIS experiment. The 3D detector together with its readout electronics have been originally designed for the ATLAS detector at the LHC. The direct annihilation of low energy antiprotons ( ~ 100 keV) takes place in the first few μm of the silicon sensor and we show that the charged products of the annihilation can be detected with the same sensor. The present study also aims to understand the signature of an antiproton annihilation event in segmented silicon detectors and compares it with a GEANT4 simulation model. Abstract: The implantation of macroencapsulated islets has the potential to restore endogenous insulin secretion in type 1 diabetics, with no need for lifetime immunosuppression. To match the physiological fluctuations of blood glucose concentrations with appropriate insulin release, the macroencapsulation material must combine immunoprotection with optimal diffusion properties for glucose and insulin. The impact of chemical modifications of polysulphone (PSU) capillary polymers with a cutoff of 50 kD on glucose-induced insulin secretion of macroencapsulated rat islets was studied in perifusion experiments. The insulin release of free-floating islets showed the typical rapid response to glucose stimulation. Total insulin release (AUC between minute 30 and 120 of perifusion) reached 117 ± 22 ng/ml. Blending PSU with polyvinylpyrrolidone or sodium-dodecyl-sulfate was not suitable for islet macroencapsulation, since glucose-induced insulin release was absent or disturbed. Hydroxy-methylation (CH2OH) of PSU improved the secretory behavior of macroencapsulated islets depending on the degree of PSU substitution (DS 0.8, AUC 62 ± 15 ng/ml; DS 1.8, 111 ± 24 ng/ml). In highly substituted PSU-capillaries the kinetics of glucose-induced insulin release was very similar to that observed in free-floating islets. Two consecutive glucose stimulations potentiated insulin release of free-floating islets during the second period of stimulation. Furthermore, freshly isolated macroencapsulated islets responded with more efficient insulin secretion after the initial priming. In conclusion, in vitro membrane screening identified highly substituted hydroxy-methylated PSU as the material of choice for islet encapsulation in a bioartificial pancreas.

Abstract: INTRODUCTION The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of different adaptation phases on the shear-stress resistance of endothelial cells seeded artificially onto vascular prostheses and biological heart valves. MATERIAL AND METHODS Human endothelial cells (EC), fibroblasts (FB), and smooth muscle cells (SMC) were isolated from vena saphena magna pieces and expanded in culture. Group A: 15 polyurethane vascular grafts (20 mm diameter) were seeded with FB and SMC (53 +/- 1.2 million cells), followed by EC seeding (39 +/- 0.9 million cells). Group B: eight stentless porcine valves (Freestyle, Medtronic, USA) were seeded with FB (68 +/- 1.5 million cells) and EC (42 +/- 1.1 million cells). Shear-stress testing was done under pulsatile flow (pulse rate: 80 pulses/min.). Adaptation phase: flow was set to 0.9 +/- 0.3 l/min (systolic pressure: 40 - 50 mm Hg). High flow was 3.2 +/- 0.6 l/min. (systolic pressure: 140 - 160 mm Hg) and lasted over four hours in all groups. The vascular grafts were divided into three groups (n = 5 each): group 1 (high flow immediately), group 2 (adaptation phase of 15 minutes), and group 3 (adaptation phase of 30 minutes). The valves either were given high flow immediately (n = 4) or had an adaptation phase of 30 minutes (n = 4). Specimens were obtained after cell seeding, before, and after perfusion. RESULTS A confluent EC layer was achieved on all grafts. After perfusion without adaptation, large defects within the cell layer were found. No FB and SMC were seen at the bottom of these defects. In group B, the defects were largest on the ventricular surface of the leaflets. After an adaptation phase of 15 minutes in group A, only a few defects within the EC layer were detected with a still confluent FB and SMC. After a 30-minute adaptation phase defects within the EC layer were very rare and no interruption of the underlying FB and SMC layer was seen. Immunohistochemical staining for factor VIII and CD31 proved the EC to be viable and staining for collagen IV and laminin revealed the formation of a basement membrane. After perfusion, the specimen also stained positive for eNOS. CONCLUSION An adaptation phase of 30 minutes proved to be sufficient to allow artificially seeded endothelial cells to adapt to shear stress. The formation of a basement membrane was of great importance for the maintenance of a confluent EC layer.

Abstract: We present measurements of time-dependent CP-violating asymmetries in neutral B decays to several CP eigenstates. The measurement uses a data sample of 23x10(6) Upsilon(4S)-->BbarB decays collected by the BABAR detector at the PEP-II asymmetric B Factory at SLAC. In this sample, we find events in which one neutral B meson is fully reconstructed in a CP eigenstate containing charmonium and the flavor of the other neutral B meson is determined from its decay products. The amplitude of the CP-violating asymmetry, which in the standard model is proportional to sin2beta, is derived from the decay time distributions in such events. The result is sin2beta = 0.34+/-0.20 (stat)+/-0.05 (syst).

Abstract: We present final measurements of the Z boson-lepton coupling asymmetry parameters Ae, Amu, and Atau with the complete sample of polarized Z bosons collected by the SLD detector at the SLAC Linear Collider. From the left-right production and decay polar angle asymmetries in leptonic Z decays we measure Ae = 0.1544 +- 0.0060, Amu = 0.142 +- 0.015, and Atau = 0.136 +- 0.015. Combined with our left-right asymmetry measured from hadronic decays, we find Ae = 0.1516 +- 0.0021. Assuming lepton universality, we obtain a combined effective weak mixing angle of sin**2 theta^{eff}_W = 0.23098 +- 0.00026., 13 pages latex, including 1 figure. Submitted to Phys. Rev. Lett

Abstract: We have made the first direct symmetry tests in the decays of polarized Z0 bosons into fully identified bbg states, collected in the SLD experiment at SLAC. We searched for evidence of parity violation at the bbg vertex by studying the asymmetries in the b-quark polar- and azimuthal-angle distributions, and for evidence of T-odd, CP-even or CP-odd, final-state interactions by measuring angular correlations between the three-jet plane and the Z0 polarization. We found results consistent with standard model expectations and set 95% C. limits on anomalous contributions.

Abstract: Objective: Hepatocytes are increasingly used as functional units in bioartificial liver devices. The objective of the present study was to investigate the feasibility of culturing porcine hepatocytes in high density on a novel polyurethane-based nonwoven three-dimensional matrix. We investigated (1) the optimal cell density within this culture configuration, (2) the maintenance of liver-specific morphology and cell functions over long-term periods and (3) the necessity to apply an additional extracellular matrix component (collagen gel). Methods: Nonwoven polyurethane matrices were manufactured by a specially developed fiber extrusion technology. Pig hepatocytes were cultured at various cell densities of 0.1, 0.25, 0.5, 0.75, 1 and 2 × 106 cells/cm2 on three-dimensional networks of nonwoven polyurethane matrices and cell adhesion as well as functional parameters (DNA of nonattached/attached cells, lactate dehydrogenase release and cytochrome P450 activity) were determined. To assess the performance of cells within this configuration albumin and urea excretion was measured over 8 days. The potentially beneficial effect of an additional extracellular matrix configuration was evaluated by comparing the average albumin synthesis in groups of identical cell numbers. Results: The optimal cell density in this three-dimensional culture configuration was 1 × 106 cells/cm2. The functional capacity of hepatocytes was stable for 8 days at an average level of 53.7 ± 5.6 ng/h/µg DNA and of 1.8 ± 0.14 µg/h/µg DNA for albumin and urea excretion, respectively. The supplementation of an extracellular matrix configuration did not improve functional activity of cells. Average albumin synthesis was 35.6 ng/h/µg DNA (28.7, 42.8) and 32.7 ng/h/µg DNA (23.4, 49.2) for collagen-immobilized and control cultures, respectively. Conclusion: The results of the study indicate that nonwoven polyurethane sheets supply a biocompatible support structure for functionally active high density cultures. Thus, nonwoven polyurethane matrices should be further investigated on with respect to their role in the development, optimization and design of bioartificial liver systems.

Abstract: The formation of the antihydrogen beam in the AEGIS experiment through the use of inhomogeneous electric fields is discussed and simulation results including the geometry of the apparatus and realistic hypothesis about the antihydrogen initial conditions are shown. The resulting velocity distribution matches the requirements of the gravity experiment. In particular it is shown that the inhomogeneous electric fields provide radial cooling of the beam during the acceleration.

Abstract: The authors have made the first direct measurement of the parity-violating coupling of the Z{sup 0} boson to the strange quark, A{sub s}, using {approximately}550,000 e{sup +}e{sup {minus}} --> Z{sup 0} --> hadrons event produced with a polarized electron beam and recorded by the SLD experiment. Z{sup 0} s anti-s events were tagged by the absence of B or D hadrons and the presence in each hemisphere of a high-momentum K{sup {+-}} or K{sub s}{sup 0}. From the polar angle distributions of the strangeness-signed thrust axis, the authors obtained A{sub s} = 0.895{+-}0.066(stat.){+-}0.062(syst.). The analyzing power and u anti-u + d anti-d background were constrained using the data.

Abstract: The authors have developed a new technique for inclusive reconstruction of the energy of B hadrons. The excellent efficiency and resolution of this technique allow them to make the most precise determination of the b-quark fragmentation function, using e{sup +}e{sup {minus}} {r{underscore}arrow} Z{sup 0} decays recorded in the SLD experiment at SLAC. The authors compared their measurement with the predictions of a number of fragmentation models. The authors excluded several of these models and measured the average scaled energy of weakly-decaying B hadrons to be (x{sub B}) = 0.714{+-}0.005(stat){+-}0.007(syst){+-}0.002 (model-dependence).

Abstract: A new non-woven polyetherurethane support suitable to host cultured hepatocytes has been developed. Prior to its use in bioreactors and artificial liver devices, the biocompatibility of this new material was investigated. The experiments have shown that the survival and functionality of hepatocytes entrapped in the non-woven polymer were longer than that of monolayer cultured hepatocytes, under serum-free culture conditions. Hepatic specific metabolic functions, namely, synthesis of urea and synthesis and secretion of plasma proteins, were well maintained by hepatocytes entrapped in non-woven polyetherurethane sheets. Cells also retained the expression of biotransformation activities of 7-ethoxycoumarin-O-deethylase as well as CYP2A1, CYP2B1 and CYP3A1. The results presented in this paper point to non-woven polyetherurethane sheets as a suitable biocompatible support for functional, three-dimensional hepatocyte cultures.

Abstract: The parity violation parameters Ab and Ac of the Zb anti-b and Zc anti-c couplings have been measured directly, using the polar angle dependence of the Z0-pole polarized cross sections. Bottom and charmed hadrons were tagged via semileptonic decays. Both the muon and electron identification algorithms take advantage of new multivariate techniques, incorporating for the first time information from the SLD Cerenkov Ring Imaging Detector. Based on the 1993-95 SLD sample of 150,000 Z0 decays produced with highly polarized electron beams, we measure: Ab = 0.910 ± 0.068(stat) ± 0.037(syst) Ac = 0.642 ± 0.110(stat) ± 0.063(syst).

Abstract: We present a direct measurement of the parity-violating asymmetry A{sub b} in the Z{sup 0} to b anti-b coupling using a new technique to distinguish the b and anti-b quarks using charged kaons from B decays. The Z{sup 0} bosons are produced in e{sup +}e{sup -} collisions at the SLC with longitudinally polarized electrons. b anti-b events are selected using a secondary vertex mass tag and A{sub b} is determined from the left-right forward-backward asymmetry. From the 1994-1995 data sample, selected from 100,000 hadronic Z{sup 0} decays, we obtain A{sub b} = 0.855 {+-} 0. 088{sub stat} {+-} 0.102{sub sys}.

Abstract: The AEg¯ $\overline {\rm{g}}$IS experiment [1] aims at directly measuring the gravitational acceleration g on a beam of cold antihydrogen (H¯$\overline {\rm{H}}$) to a precision of 1%, performing the first test with antimatter of the (WEP) Weak Equivalence Principle. The experimental apparatus is sited at the Antiproton Decelerator (AD) at CERN, Geneva, Switzerland. After production by mixing of antiprotons with Rydberg state positronium atoms (Ps), the H¯$\overline {\rm{H}}$ atoms will be driven to fly horizontally with a velocity of a few 100 ms−1 for a path length of about 1 meter. The small deflection, few tens of μm, will be measured using two material gratings (of period ∼ 80 μm) coupled to a position-sensitive detector working as a moiré deflectometer similarly to what has been done with matter atoms [2]. The shadow pattern produced by the H¯$\overline {\rm{H}}$ beam will then be detected by reconstructing the annihilation points with a spatial resolution (∼ 2 μm) of each antiatom at the end of the flight path by the sensitive-position detector. During 2012 the experimental apparatus has been commissioned with antiprotons and positrons. Since the AD will not be running during 2013,during the refurbishment of the CERN accelerators, the experiment is currently working with positrons, electrons and protons, in order to prepare the way for the antihydrogen production in late 2014.

Abstract: The AEgIS (Antimatter Experiment: Gravity, Interferometry, Spectroscopy) experiment is located at the antiproton decelerator complex of CERN. The main goal of the experiment is to perform the first direct measurement of the Earth’s gravitational acceleration on antihydrogen atoms within 1% precision. The antihydrogen is produced in a cylindrical Penning trap by combining antiprotons with positrons. To reach the precision of 1%, the antihydrogen has to be cooled to 100 mK to reduce its random velocity. A dilution refrigerator is selected to deliver the necessary cooling capacity of 100 μW at 50 mK. The AEgIS cryogenic system basically consists of cryostats for a 1-T and for a 5-T superconducting magnet, a central region cryostat, a dilution refrigerator cryostat and a measurement cryostat with a Moiré deflectometer to measure the gravitational acceleration. In autumn 2012, the 1-T cryostat, 5-T cryostat and central region cryostat were assembled and commissioned. The apparatus is cooled down in eight days using 2500 L of liquid helium and liquid nitrogen. During operation, the average consumption of liquid helium is 150 L∙day-1 and of liquid nitrogen 5 L·day-1. The temperature sensors at the Penning traps measured 12 K to 18 K, which is higher than expected. Simulations show that this is caused by a bad thermalization of the trap wiring. The implementation of the sub-kelvin region is foreseen for mid-2015. The antihydrogen will be cooled down to 100 mK in an ultra-cold trap consisting of multiple high-voltage electrodes made of sapphire with gold plated electrode sectors.

Abstract: The annihilation channel p p →K + K − π 0 in liquid hydrogen at rest has been studied with the Crystal Barrel detector at LEAR. The measured branching ratio is: BR ( p p → K + K − π 0 )=(2.37±0.15)×10 −3 . A partial wave analysis shows that this reaction is dominated by the π (K K ) S , K K ∗ (892) and π φ (1020) intermediate states. Weak signals are observed for π a 2 (1320), π f 2 (1270), π f 2 ′(1525) and K(Kπ) S . A satisfactory description of the Dalitz plot requires the introduction of π (K K ) P intermediate states with at least one pole.

Abstract: To assess the effects of antihypertensive treatment with the angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitor perindopril on insulin sensitivity, plasma insulin, and lipoprotein metabolism in overweight hypertensive patients, we measured the insulin sensitivity index (SI, determined according to the minimal model method of Bergman), fasting plasma insulin and glucose concentrations, serum total triglyceride and lipoprotein cholesterol fractions, and blood pressure (BP) in 30 overweight [mean body mass index (BMI) 30.9 kg/m2], nondiabetic patients with essential hypertension after a 4-week run-in period and after 6 weeks of perindopril (n = 20) or placebo (n = 10) administered in a double-blind fashion. Furthermore, we estimated their state of physical fitness using the Conconi bicycle ergometer test before and after perindopril or placebo administration. SI was low in our study population (3.2 vs. 13.3 10(-4) ml.microU-1.min-1 in normal lean control subjects). It did not differ between the perindopril and placebo group after the placebo run-in period (3.1 vs. 3.3 x 10(-4) ml.microU-1.min-1) and was not influenced by perindopril (3.3 x 10(-4) ml.microU-1.min-1) or placebo (3.6 x 10(-4) ml.microU-1.min-1) treatment. Moreover, no significant changes were apparent in fasting plasma insulin and glucose, the areas under the glucose and insulin curves, the glucose disappearance rates, serum total triglycerides (TG), or cholesterol or lipoprotein cholesterol fractions between run-in and active treatment phases in the perindopril or the placebo group, respectively. Heart rate (HR), body weight, and anaerobic threshold remained stable in both groups. Compliance, assessed by pill counting was > 90% in both groups at all visits. Therefore, the ACE inhibitor perindopril is neutral with regard to insulin sensitivity, plasma insulin and glucose, and lipoprotein metabolism in overweight, nondiabetic patients with essential hypertension.

Abstract: $N\bar N$ annihilation at rest into five pions was studied in the ASTERIX spectrometer by stopping antiprotrons from LEAR in a H2 or D2 gas target. In$\bar pp$ annihilations in H2 leading to the π+π−π+π−π0 final state, the invariant mass spectra of two, three, and four pions show no evidence for any new narrow states. In$\bar pn \to \pi ^ + \pi ^ - \pi ^ + \pi ^ - \pi ^ - $ the difference of the four pion mass spectra recoiling against a π− and those recoiling against a π+ shows a resonance-like structure (“ζ (1480)”), confirming a previous analysis with a smaller event sample. The ζ (1480) mass is shown to depend strongly on the momentum of the spectator proton. In H2, we searched for the ζ (1480) in the reaction$\bar pp \to \pi ^0 \zeta $ (1480), ζ (1480) →π+π−π+π− to clarify whether the ζ (1480) is identical to the 4π-mode of thef2 (1520). No evidence for this decay mode was found. A prominent resonance in$\bar pp$ innihilation into five pions is the ω meson. We find two quasi-two-body intermediate states:$\bar pp \to \rho \omega $ and$\bar pp \to \pi ^ \pm b_1^ \mp $ (1235). The mass and width of theb1 (1235) are determined to be: $$M_{bI} = 1225 \pm 5\user2{MeV, }\Gamma _{b1} = 113 \pm 12MeV.$$ (1)

Abstract: The Crystal Barrel Detector has been in operation since October 1989. Results on the analysis of the annihilation of protonium at rest into three pseudoscalars is presented. The π 0 π 0 π 0 final state confirms the existence of ƒ 2 (1520)→π 0 π 0 . In the ηη system of the π 0 ηη final state an isoscalar J PC = 0 ++ resonance with a mass of 1560 MeV/c 2 and a width of 245 MeV/c 2 is observed. The identification with ƒ 0 (1590) is doubtful since the ηη' decay is not observed with the corresponding strength. Our analysis yields an upper limit for the relative branching ratio BR(ƒ 0 (1560)→ηη') BR(ƒ 0 (1560)→ηη) .

Abstract: We discuss φ production in p p annihilation at rest from the Asterix and Crystal Barrel experiments and compare the branching ratios to similar final states without strangeness. The ωπ 0 φπ 0 production ratio is unexpectedly low. In the search for new states, the φπ0 mass spectrum shows no evidence for a resonance in the 1450 MeV/c2 mass range but the K☆K0π0 Dalitz plot shows interesting structure.

Abstract: We have measured the cross section for γγ production with the TOPAZ detector in the energy region √ s =50.0–61.4 GeV. The observed cross section for γγ production integrated over |cos θ | ⩽ 0.77 is 50.2±0.8±2.2 pb at 〈√ s 〉=57.6 GeV and the ratio of this value to the QED prediction is 1.01±0.02±0.04. The angular distribution is in good agreement with the QED predictions, thereby setting limits on the compositeness scales, Λ L+R + =168 GeV, Λ L+R − =97 GeV, Λ L,R =141 GeV, Λ L,R − =81 GeV, and Λ L−R ± =68 GeV, at the 95% confidence level. The reaction e + e − → γγγ was also studied and was found consistent with the QED prediction.

Abstract: The process e + e − →e + e − μ + μ − has been studied in single-tag and double-tag configurations using the TOPAZ detector at TRISTAN. The data correspond to the integrated luminosity of 45.3pb − at center-of-mass energies ranging from 52 to 61.4 GeV. The observed events in both configurations have shown a good agreement with QED predictions in order α 4 . Although the AMY group reported an excess of e + e − →e + e − μ + μ − events in double-tag mode at low muon invariant mass region less than 1.0 GeV/c 2 , we did not observed such excess in our data.

Abstract: An experimental study of b-quark jets using high-pT electrons was carried out at √s=58 GeV with the TOPAZ detector at the e+e− collider TRISTAN at KEK. The forward-backward charge asymmetry of the b-quark was obtained to be A b b =−0.55±0.27( stat. )±0.07( syst. ) , consistent with the standard model prediction. Also, such jet properties of the b-quark as the average charged multiplicity and the rapidity of charged particles were analyzed. In order to purify the b-quark event samples in this analysis, only events with backward-going electrons or forward-going positrons were used. The energy dependence of these jet properties was studied by making comparisons with the results of the DELCO experiment at the PEP collider (√s=29 GeV) at SLAC.

Abstract: We report on measurements of the branching ratios for φ production in p p annihilation at rest in H 2 gas. Branching ratios for φπ 0 , φη, φϱ 0 , φω and φπ + π − are determined for two data sets with different contributions of annihilations from S and P states of the p p system. The branching ratios are compared to corresponding annihilation modes where the φ is replaced by an ω meson. We conclude that φ production is in most reactions enhanced with respect to the expectation based on the OZI rule. In annihilations from the spin triplet ground state of antiprotonic hydrogen into φπ the OZI rule is violated dramatically.
