1. Double-blind comparison of the variability in spontaneous recovery of cisatracurium- and vecuronium-induced neuromuscular block in adult and elderly patients

Abstract

BACKGROUND This study was designed to compare variability in the offset of two neuromuscular blocking agents with different elimination pathways. METHODS The spontaneous recovery profiles of cisatracurium and vecuronium were compared in adult (18-64 years) and elderly (> or =65 years) patients receiving N2O/O2/fentanyl/propofol anaesthesia. Patients were randomised to receive an initial bolus dose and maintenance doses of 3xED95, respectively, 0.6xED95 for cisatracurium (0.15 and 0.03 mg.kg-1) or 2xED95, respectively, and 0.4xED95 for vecuronium (0.1 and 0.02 mg.kg(-1)), as recommended in their prescribing information. Administration of the study drugs was double-blinded, and neuromuscular transmission was monitored using mechanomyography of the evoked response of the adductor pollicis, following ulnar nerve stimulation. RESULTS The clinically effective duration (minutes) of the initial bolus dose, defined as the mean time to 25% T1 recovery (+/-SD), for the adult and elderly patients was 53.5+/-9.8 and 57.3+/-11.5 for cisatracurium, respectively, and 34.1+/-9.0 and 47.5+/-14.4 for vecuronium, respectively. The duration of spontaneous sufficient recovery (SSR), defined as the mean (+/-SD) time interval in minutes from 25% T1 recovery to a T4:T1 ratio > or =0.8 after the last bolus dose, for the adult, respectively, elderly patients was 28.3+/-8.0 and 31.7+/-10.0 for cisatracurium and 38.5+/-13.2 and 60.3+/-26.1 for vecuronium. CONCLUSION Whereas both the clinically effective duration and the duration of SSR are comparable between the adult and the elderly patients receiving cisatracurium, they differ substantially between these two age groups for vecuronium. Furthermore, the variability in offset is significantly lower in patients receiving cisatracurium, especially in the elderly, which may be of particular clinical interest.

Abstract

The CPLEAR collaboration has constructed a detector at CERN for an extensive programme of CP-, T- and CPT-symmetry studies using ${\rm K}^0$ and $\bar{\rm K}^0$ produced by the annihilation of $\bar{\rm p}$'s in a hydrogen gas target. The ${\rm K}^0$ and $\bar{\rm K}^0$ are identified by their companion products of the annihilation ${\rm K}^{\pm} \pi^{\mp}$ which are tracked with multiwire proportional chambers, drift chambers and streamer tubes. Particle identification is carried out with a liquid Cherenkov detector for fast separation of pions and kaons and with scintillators which allow the measurement of time of flight and energy loss. Photons are measured with a lead/gas sampling electromagnetic calorimeter. The required antiproton annihilation modes are selected by fast online processors using the tracking chamber and particle identification information. All the detectors are mounted in a 0.44 T uniform field of an axial solenoid of diameter 2 m and length 3.6 m to form a magnetic spectrometer capable of full on-line reconstruction and selection of events. The design, operating parameters and performance of the sub-detectors are described.}

Abstract

The design and instrumentation of a streamer tube detector for operation in the high rate environment of the CPLEAR experiment at CERN is described. A study of gas mixtures for use in the streamer tube is discussed. The final mixture of 46% argon, 50% isobutane, 4% methylal and 0.01% freon produces an axial resolution of 1.5 cm with an efficiency of 98% per layer.

Abstract

The interference between CP-conserving Ks and K L → π + π − π 0 decay amplitudes was observed by studying the decay rate asymmetries between initial K 0 and K 0 separately for the phase space regions E CM ( π + ) > E CM ( π − ) and E CM ( π + ) E CM ( π − ). For the parameter λ we found Re(λ) = 0.036 ± 0.010(stat.) −0.003 +0.002 (syst.) and Im(λ) consistent with zero, leading to a branching ratio B = [4.1 −1.9 +2.5 (stat.) −0.6 +0.5 (syst.)] × 10 −7 for the CP-conserving K S → π + π − π 0 decay.

Abstract

The CP violation parameter η+− is determined through the eigentime-dependent asymmetry in the rates of initially tagged K0 and K 0 decaying to π+π−. The obtained values are |η+−| = (2.312 ± 0.043stat. ± 0.030syst. ± 0.011τs) × 10−3 and Φ+− = 42.7° ± 0.9stat.° ± 0.6syst.° ± 0.9Δm° with Δ = (527.4 ± 2.9) × 10 7 h gs −1 measured in the same experiment using the semileptonic decay channel.

Abstract

Antiproton annihilation at rest in gaseous hydrogen (16 bar pressure) to the final states ρ(770)X andf2(1270)X, whereX stands for one or more neutral mesons, has been studied at LEAR using the CPLEAR detector. Relative branching ratios are given forX =π0,2π0, 3π0 ω in the ρ case, and forX =π0, η in thef2 case. The annihilation channel\(\bar pp \to \rho 3\pi ^0 \) has not been measured before. The fraction of P-wave annihilation is deduced from the ratiof2π0/ρπ0 to be 0.38±0.07, in good agreement with the result previously obtained by CPLEAR from the ratioK+K-/π+π-.

Abstract

Two-charged-pion correlations were studied in\(\bar p\)p(→2π*2π−nπ0,n≥0) annihilations at rest with the CPLEAR detector at the Low-Energy Antiproton Ring (LEAR). A strong enhancement was found in the production of pairs of like-sign pions with a small value of the relative fourmomentumQ, with respect to pairs of unlike-sign pions. The observed enhancement was interpreted as a consequence of the Bose-Einstein symmetrization of the two-pion wave function. The data are well represented by a correlation function parametrized as a double-Gaussian; an exponential parametrization is also statistically acceptable. The value of the correlation strength is found to be >1. The high-quality large data samples together with the ability for K± identification and final-state separation allowed the study of systematic effects impacting on theQ dependence of the correlation function and on the extracted space parameters of the pion sources.

Abstract

Bose-Einstein (BE) correlations between like-sign charged pions were studied in pp annihilations at rest into four-prong events, using data taken with the CPLEAR detector at LEAR (CERN). A strong enhancement was found in the production of pairs of like-sign pions of similar momenta, with respect to the pairs of unlike-sign pions. The observed BE- enhancement was used to extract the values for the strength λ of the effect and the radius r of the pion emitting source. The extracted value of λ >l is of relevant importance and clearly does not depend on the assumed parametrization of the correlation function. The influence of the normalization and fitting procedure, the detector resolution, the resonances production and decay and the neutral-pion multiplicity cuts, on the size of the pion source and the strength of the effect was investigated.

Abstract

We report the first determination of CP violation parameters from parameter from particle—antiparticle asymmetry in the decay of neutral kaons into two charged pions. Observation of such an asymmetry is direct proof of CP violation. A fit to the asymmetry enabled a determination of the parameter η+− to be made, yielding the result |η+−|=[2.32±0.14 (stat.)±0.03 (syst.)]×10−3 and σ+−=42.3°±4.4° (stat.)±0.4° (syst.), with an additional uncertainty of ±1.0° due to the error on the present published value of Δm, the KL0-KS0 mass difference. The magnitudes of both statistical and systematic errors will be significantly reduced in the future.

Abstract

The ratio of the branching fractions for p p →K+K− and p p →π+π− was determined with the CPLEAR detector, by stopping antiprotons in a gaseous hydrogen target at 15 bar pressure. It was found to be BR(K+K−)/BR(π+π−)=0.205± 0.016. The fraction of P-wave annihilation at rest at this target density was deduced to be (38±9)%.

Abstract

Abstract

We report on a new measurement of the K L –K S mass difference Δm using the CPLEAR full data sample of neutral-kaon decays to e πν . The result is Δm =(0.5295±0.0020 stat ±0.0003 syst )×10 10 ℏ/s. It includes earlier data reported in R. Adler et al., CPLEAR Collaboration, Phys. Lett. B 363 (1995) 237. A measurement of the ΔS = ΔQ violating parameter Re( x ) is also obtained.

Abstract

CP violation has been observed as a time-dependent rate asymmetry between the decays ${⩈erline K}^0 ⌝ghtarrow ≪^{0} ≪^{0}$ and K0 → π0π{0}, where the neutral kaons are produced with definite and individually known strangeness in ${⋏r p}p ⌝ghtarrow{⩈erline K}^0 K^+≪^- $ or pp → K0 K− π+. A special technique for the data analysis has been developed. The values obtained for ϕ00 and ¦ η00¦ are in agreement with those of previous measurements of CP violation.

Abstract

The CPLEAR experiment at CERN measures particle‐antiparticle asymmetries of strangeness‐tagged K0, K0 decays to two‐pion, three‐pion, and semileptonic final states. The technique of CPLEAR is an alternative approach to previous CP‐violation studies. It provides complementary information with different systematics and gives access to novel measurements. The precision of the CP‐violation parameters η+− for π+π−, η+−0 for π+π−π0 and of the T‐violation parameter eT for π±e∓ν will be discussed for the data taken between 1990–1992.

Abstract

The method for studying semileptonic neutral kaon decays at CPLEAR is presented together with a preliminary data analysis. For the first time a direct determination of T violation is shown to be possible and low statistics results are given. From the same data the K(L)-K(S) mass difference, DELTAm, the CP violation parameter of K(S), epsilon(S), and the parameter x testing the DELTAS = DELTAQ rule are also obtained. Nuclear Physics A

Abstract

The CPLEAR experiment is aiming at precise CP violation tests using initially pure K0- and K0BAR beams from the intense source provided by the annihilation of the LEAR pBAR-beam in hydrogen. The strangeness tagging efficiency and the systematic errors have been studied and found to be in agreement with the design specifications. The measurement of the differential time asymmetry of the pi+pi- decays allowed the direct observation of differences in the decay rates of particles and antiparticles.The CP violating parameters were determined as \eta+/-\ = (2.32 +/- 0.14) . 10(-3) and phi+/- = 42.3-degrees +/- 4.4-degrees. Abstract

We describe the status of experiment PS195, which is under way on LEAR at CERN to study CP violation starting with pure K0 or K0 states. Early results on backgrounds and systematic effects agree with expectations from the original proposal. An asymmetry in particle‐anti‐particle partial decay rates has been seen for the first time.

Abstract

The aim of the CP LEAR experiment is to study symmetry-violation effects, making use of tagged K0's and K0's. The detector, although missing some electronic components, has been operational for a few weeks at the end of 1989 at the CERN Low-Energy Antiproton Ring (LEAR). At the moment, the analysis of the data is in progress. This paper gives a description of the experimental method and of the detector; the sensitivities of some measurements and some preliminary results are also discussed.

Abstract

The CPLEAR experiment at CERN has been designed to measure CP and T violating effects in the neutral kaon system by observing particle-antiparticle asymmetries. The motivation and the physics program of CPLEAR is presented and first analyses of the K0,K0BAR to pi+pi-, pi0pi0 and pi+pi-pi0 decays are discussed. Abstract

Firms typically try to profit from their technological innovations by selling them embedded in new processes, goods and services. Less frequently, innovators rely on the market for technology for the exploitation of their technologies or for outsourcing technologies developed by third parties. Traditionally, external sources of knowledge were considered an important option for small and medium firms, as they could not rely on in-house R&D laboratories. Also, small firms are typically more willing to offer their technology on the markets for technology because they lack the downstream complementary assets needed to reach the market for products. However, more recently large firms have also opened their innovative activities to external sources of knowledge and complementary assets (see chapter by Dahlander and Alexy). As a result, markets for technology are becoming larger and more diffused, although their future growth depends on a more substantial involvement of large firms, many of which remain still reluctant to rely on technology trade. Markets for technology do not always imply substantial transfer of knowledge. License agreements often result from litigation for the control of IPRs. This is the case of owners of large patent portfolios who sign cross-licensing agreements that give the parties the freedom to operate in their respective technological and market fields rather than allowing access to outside technology. Litigation sometimes is initiated by patent trolls, namely organizations whose main aim is to accumulate patent portfolios and force potential infringers to licensing-in their technology. Probably, these IPR agreements too do not imply any real technology transfer between the parties. Typically, large firms seek to quickly settle out of court a dispute with patent trolls or small patent owners to avoid the risk of an injunction to stop alleged patent infringement. These various avenues leading to licensing and other forms of technology transactions are characterized by different actors, incentives, costs and benefits of which innovation managers should be aware. After providing a definition of technology markets, this chapter highlights the importance of technology markets for innovation management. It illustrates the motivations for licensing both from the supply side and the demand side of the market, and discusses the barriers to technology trade.

Abstract

MicroRNAs are sequentially processed by RNase III enzymes Drosha and Dicer. miR-451 is a highly conserved miRNA in vertebrates which bypasses Dicer processing and instead relies on AGO2 for its maturation. miR-451 is highly expressed in erythrocytes and regulates the differentiation of erythroblasts into mature red blood cells. However, the mechanistic details underlying miR-451 biogenesis in erythrocytes remains obscure. Here, we report that the RNA binding protein CSDE1 which is required for the development of erythroblasts into erythrocytes, controls the expression of miR-451 in erythroleukemia cells. CSDE1 binds miR-451 and regulates AGO2 processing of pre-miR-451 through its N-terminal domains. CSDE1 further interacts with PARN and promotes the trimming of intermediate miR-451 to the mature length. Together, our results demonstrate that CSDE1 promotes biogenesis of miR-451 in erythroid progenitors., (© The Author(s) 2023. 30. Composite to tilted vortex lattice transition in Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+delta in oblique fields.

Abstract

Precision measurements of the vortex phase diagram in single crystals of the layered superconductor Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+delta in oblique magnetic fields confirm the existence of a second phase transition, in addition to the usual first-order vortex-lattice melting line Hm(T). The transition has a strong first-order character, is accompanied by strong hysteresis, and intersects the melting line in a tricritical point (Hm perpendicular, Hcr parallel). Its field dependence and the changing character of the melting line at the tricritical point strongly suggest that the ground state for magnetic fields closely aligned with the superconducting layers is a lattice of uniformly tilted vortex lines.

Background: This study was designed to compare variability in the offset of two neuromuscular blocking agents with different elimination pathways., Methods: The spontaneous recovery profiles of cisatracurium and vecuronium were compared in adult (18-64 years) and elderly (> or =65 years) patients receiving N2O/O2/fentanyl/propofol anaesthesia. Patients were randomised to receive an initial bolus dose and maintenance doses of 3xED95, respectively, 0.6xED95 for cisatracurium (0.15 and 0.03 mg.kg-1) or 2xED95, respectively, and 0.4xED95 for vecuronium (0.1 and 0.02 mg.kg(-1)), as recommended in their prescribing information. Administration of the study drugs was double-blinded, and neuromuscular transmission was monitored using mechanomyography of the evoked response of the adductor pollicis, following ulnar nerve stimulation., Results: The clinically effective duration (minutes) of the initial bolus dose, defined as the mean time to 25% T1 recovery (+/-SD), for the adult and elderly patients was 53.5+/-9.8 and 57.3+/-11.5 for cisatracurium, respectively, and 34.1+/-9.0 and 47.5+/-14.4 for vecuronium, respectively. The duration of spontaneous sufficient recovery (SSR), defined as the mean (+/-SD) time interval in minutes from 25% T1 recovery to a T4:T1 ratio > or =0.8 after the last bolus dose, for the adult, respectively, elderly patients was 28.3+/-8.0 and 31.7+/-10.0 for cisatracurium and 38.5+/-13.2 and 60.3+/-26.1 for vecuronium., Conclusion: Whereas both the clinically effective duration and the duration of SSR are comparable between the adult and the elderly patients receiving cisatracurium, they differ substantially between these two age groups for vecuronium. Furthermore, the variability in offset is significantly lower in patients receiving cisatracurium, especially in the elderly, which may be of particular clinical interest.
