Abstract

Astrophysical sources of gravitational waves, such as binary neutron star and black hole mergers or core-collapse supernovae, can drive relativistic outflows, giving rise to non-thermal high-energy emission. High-energy neutrinos are signatures of such outflows. The detection of gravitational waves and high-energy neutrinos from common sources could help establish the connection between the dynamics of the progenitor and the properties of the outflow. We searched for associated emission of gravitational waves and high-energy neutrinos from astrophysical transients with minimal assumptions using data from Advanced LIGO from its first observing run O1, and data from the A ntares and IceCube neutrino observatories from the same time period. We focused on candidate events whose astrophysical origins could not be determined from a single messenger. We found no significant coincident candidate, which we used to constrain the rate density of astrophysical sources dependent on their gravitational-wave and neutrino emission processes.

Abstract

Summary of the long term data taking, related to one of the proposed next generation ground-based gravitational detector's location is presented here. Results of seismic and infrasound noise, electromagnetic attenuation and cosmic muon radiation measurements are reported in the underground Matra Gravitational and Geophysical Laboratory near Gy\"ongy\"osoroszi, Hungary. The collected seismic data of more than two years is evaluated from the point of view of the Einstein Telescope, a proposed third generation underground gravitational wave observatory. Abstract

A numerical agent-based spin model of financial markets, based on the Potts model from statistical mechanics, with a novel interpretation of the spin variable (as regards financial-market models) is presented. In this model, a value of the spin variable is only the agent's opinion concerning current market situation, which he communicates to his nearest neighbors. Instead, the agent's action (i.e., buying, selling, or staying inactive) is connected with a change of the spin variable. Hence, the agents can be considered as cunning in this model. That is, these agents encourage their neighbors to buy stocks if the agents have an opportunity to sell them, and the agents encourage their neighbors to sell stocks if the agents have a reversed opportunity. Predictions of the model are in good agreement with empirical data from various real-life financial markets. The model reproduces the shape of the usual and absolute-value autocorrelation function of returns as well as the distribution of times between superthreshold losses., 20 pages, 10 figures

Abstract

Mixed spatio–temporal spectral analysis was applied for the detection of seismic waves passing through the west–end building of the Virgo interferometer. The method enables detection of a passing wave, including its frequency, length, direction, and amplitude. A thorough analysis aimed at improving sensitivity of the Virgo detector was made for the data gathered by 38 seismic sensors, in the two–week measurement period, from 24 January to 6 February 2018, and for frequency range 5–20 Hz. Two dominant seismic–wave frequencies were found: 5.5 Hz and 17.1 Hz. The presented method can be applied for a better understanding of the interferometer seismic environment, and by identifying noise sources, help the noise–hunting and mitigation work that eventually leads to interferometer noise suppression.

Abstract

We provide evidence that catastrophic bifurcation breakdowns or transitions, preceded by early warning signs such as flickering phenomena, are present on notoriously unpredictable financial markets. For this we construct robust indicators of catastrophic dynamical slowing down and apply these to identify hallmarks of dynamical catastrophic bifurcation transitions. This is done using daily closing index records for the representative examples of financial markets of small and mid to large capitalisations experiencing a speculative bubble induced by the worldwide financial crisis of 2007-08.

Abstract

In this work we essentially reinterpreted the Sieczka Hoayst model to make it more suited for description of real markets. For instance, this reinterpretation made it possible to consider agents as crafty. These agents encourage their neighbors to buy some stocks if agents have an opportunity to sell these stocks. Also, agents encourage them to sell some stocks if agents have an opposite opportunity. Furthermore, in our interpretation price changes respond only to the agents' opinions change. This kind of respond protects the stock market dynamics against the paradox (present in the Sieczka Hoayst model), where all agents e.g. buy stocks while the corresponding prices remain unchanged. In this work we found circumstances, where distributions of returns (obtained for quite di erent time scales) either obey power-law or have at least fat tails. We obtained these distributions from numerical simulations performed in the frame of our approach.

Abstract

We use a key concept of the continuous-time random walk formalism, i.e., continuous and fluctuating interevent times in which mutual dependence is taken into account, to model market fluctuation data when traders experience excessive (or superthreshold) losses or excessive (or superthreshold) profits. We analytically derive a class of "superstatistics" that accurately model empirical market activity data supplied by Bogachev, Ludescher, Tsallis, and Bunde that exhibit transition thresholds. We measure the interevent times between excessive losses and excessive profits and use the mean interevent discrete (or step) time as a control variable to derive a universal description of empirical data collapse. Our dominant superstatistic value is a power-law corrected by the lower incomplete gamma function, which asymptotically tends toward robustness but initially gives an exponential. We find that the scaling shape exponent that drives our superstatistics subordinates itself and a "superscaling" configuration emerges. Thanks to the Weibull copula function, our approach reproduces the empirically proven dependence between successive interevent times. We also use the approach to calculate a dynamic risk function and hence the dynamic VaR, which is significant in financial risk analysis. Our results indicate that there is a functional (but not literal) balance between excessive profits and excessive losses that can be described using the same body of superstatistics but different calibration values and driving parameters. We also extend our original approach to cover empirical seismic activity data (e.g., given by Corral), the interevent times of which range from minutes to years. Superpositioned superstatistics is another class of superstatistics that protects power-law behavior both for short- and long-time behaviors. These behaviors describe well the collapse of seismic activity data and capture so-called volatility clustering phenomena.

Abstract

In Belgium, 10-15% of patients infected with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) are coinfected with hepatitis C virus (HCV). Because of increased incidence of antiretroviral drug-related hepatotoxicity and more rapid clinical evolution towards end-stage liver disease, treatment of chronic hepatitis C becomes a priority. We report the results of a multi-centred Belgian study evaluating efficacy and safety of peginterferon alpha-2b plus ribavirin in HIV-HCV co-infected patients without AIDS and without decompensated liver disease.Forty-one patients, all genotypes, were screened to participate. Eventually 37 received treatment with peginterferon alpha-2b (1.5 microg/kg/week) plus daily weight-based ribavirin for 52 weeks. About one third of the patients were genotypes 1, 2/3, and genotype 4, most of the latter being of Central African origin. About 56% of the patients had severe fibrosis (Metavir scoreor = F3).Sustained viral response (SVR) at 24 weeks of follow-up was observed in 10/37 (27%) of patients. SVR was higher in genotype 2/3 compared to genotype 1/4 (46.7% versus 13.6%; p = 0.06) and in low (F0-F1) versus high (F2-F4) grade fibrosis (p = 0.06). Treatment was withdrawn for side effects in 11/37 patients (30%). One Child A cirrhosis patient at the start of therapy died 7 months after treatment withdrawal as a result of severe haemolytic anaemia.It can be concluded that weight-based peginterferon alpha-2b plus ribavirin can be successful in selected HIV-HCV co-infected patients. Caution should be applied in patients with advanced liver disease.

Abstract

A multiplicity of factors determine the fail safe behaviour of steel weldments. This paper identifies a number of key points which need to be addressed when higher strength steel weldments are used in fracture critical parts. In particular, it is shown that weld joint efficiency hinges on the interaction between the relative difference between weld/base metal yield strength and toughness. It is concluded that a quantitative assessment of this interaction is required for the effective utilization of “new generation” higher strength steels. Also, it is explained that a re-examination of certain testing requirements and the development of supplementary ones are required to take full advantage of the higher strength steels.

Abstract. The article presents the basic principles of a criteria-based approach to the analysis of the cost management system of business structures. The expediency of analysis for each stage of the cost management process is indicated. The stages of cost management are determined: development (adoption) of a solution, implementation of a solution and control. The method for calculating complex and resulting criteria for analyzing the effectiveness of the cost management system on the example of sewing enterprises is proposed. Among the main results of the proposed criterial approach, the assessment of the effectiveness of the cost management system of a business structure in the context of each stage of management and the possibility of comparing the effectiveness of cost management systems at different enterprises are determined. For each stage of management, the six local criteria have been developed and their quantitative characteristics are indicated to analyze the level of efficiency of the cost management system. Local criteria can take values from 0 to 1. For each of them, there are three options for the accepted value: the most and least effective and intermediate value. Local criteria are combined into a complex criterion. The complex criteria for each stage of management constitute the resulting criterion for assessing the cost management system of the business structure. The closer the obtained value of the resulting criterion is to 1, the more effective the cost management system at the enterprise becomes. The analysis of indicators of five leading domestic enterprises of the garment industry was carried out according to the given methodology. It was found that the performance indicators of each of the studied enterprises are almost half of the optimal result. It is noted that the researched enterprises need to focus on improving the existing cost management systems. Moreover, each enterprise has the cost management system with the different operating efficiency at each stage of management. That is, the proposed methodology allows enterprises to identify problematic aspects in the context of management stages and to make changes to the cost management system in order to increase its efficiency. Abstract

In order to demonstrate that the low HAZ “local fracture toughness” properties as measured in CTOD testing does not always reflect the potential structural performance, extensive use is being made of (surface) notched wide plate tests to assess the significance of such low toughness regions within the HAZ. These regions are normally labeled as local brittle zones (LBZ) and are related with the CGHAZ microstructure. If any comparison between the results of the CTOD test and the wide plate test is to be valid, it is an essential requirement that the test notch in the wide plate specimen should be fatigue precracked and that utmost care should be exercised to ensure that the fatigue crack tip is located in the coarse grained region of the HAZ. Additionally, a detailed metallographic and fractographic examination is needed if the wide plate test result is to be compared with the CTOD data base. Such post wide plate test metallographic examination of the regions of microstructures sampled by the fatigue crack tip embodies a major deviation from the wide plate testing procedures used previously. The purpose of this paper is to review the specific notching procedures and the method of post test examinations used currently in wide plate testing. Furthermore, these procedures are extensively discussed and illustrated by a series of fatigue crack tip photomicrographs taken from a 50 mm thick weld HAZ notched wide plate test specimen.

Abstract

A brief outline is given of the applicability of wide plate testing for the assessment of the significance of defects on failure behaviour for notch ductile materials. Wide plate test results are assessed using the Gross Section Yielding concept. This concept aims to define a maximum tolerable defect size agy for gross section yielding before fracture ensues. The examples given illustrate that this approach permits a realistic assessment of the integrity of structures serving an important safety function.

19. Molecular dynamics simulation of the coalescence of surfactant-laden droplets.

Abstract

We investigate the coalescence of surfactant-laden water droplets by using several different surfactant types and a wide range of concentrations by means of a coarse-grained model obtained by the statistical associating fluid theory. Our results demonstrate in detail a universal mass transport mechanism of surfactant across many concentrations and several surfactant types during the process. Coalescence initiation is seen to occur via a single pinch due to aggregation of surface surfactant, and its remnants tend to become engulfed in part inside the forming bridge. Across the board we confirm the existence of an initial thermal regime with constant bridge width followed by a later inertial regime with bridge width scaling roughly as the square root of time, but see no evidence of an intermediate viscous regime. Coalescence becomes slower as surfactant concentration grows, and we see evidence of the appearance of a further slowdown of a different nature for several times the critical concentration. We anticipate that our results provide further insights in the mechanisms of coalescence of surfactant-laden droplets.

Purpose: As Coronavirus disease 19 (COVID-19) has spread globally, hospital systems have seen an increasing strain on their ability to accommodate the growing caseload. This demand has led countries to adopt varying surge-facility or alternate care site (ACS) models to manage patient overflow. This report describes the experience of setting up pharmacy services at a city-run surge facility in Philadelphia., Summary: The COVID-19 Surge Facility at the Liacouras Center (CSF-L) was initially developed to serve as a site for patients convalescing from acute inpatient stays in order to free up healthcare resources in surrounding hospitals. The CSF-L site required a distinct set of services to provide the desired level of care. This report details the preparations and challenges faced by the CSF-L pharmacy team in this endeavor, including identifying a pharmacy location that met regulatory requirements, obtaining proper licenses, coordinating drug procurement, filling staffing requirements, developing a formulary, defining the pharmacy and medication management workflow, and ensuring safety protocols were followed. This report explains the rational for developing certain processes and suggests alternative options and ideal plans for developing future pharmacy services in an ACS., Conclusion: Identifying a pharmacy leadership team early in the ACS planning process can lead to more efficient plans for pharmacy services. Abstract

Background: The growing interest in mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) in equine medicine, together with the development of MSC biobanking for allogeneic use, raises concerns about biosafety of such products. MSCs derived from umbilical cord (UC) carry an inherent risk of contamination by environmental conditions and vertical transmission of pathogens from broodmares. There is yet no report in the scientific literature about horses being contaminated by infected MSC products, and no consensus about systematic infectious screening of umbilical cord-derived mesenchymal stromal cells (UC-MSCs) to ensure microbiological safety of therapeutic products. Objectives: To develop a standard protocol to ensure UC-MSC microbiological safety and to assess the risk of vertical transmission of common intracellular pathogens from broodmares to paired UC-MSCs. Study Design and Methods: Eighty-four UC and paired peripheral maternal blood (PMB) samples were collected between 2014 and 2016. Sterility was monitored by microbiological control tests. Maternal contamination was tested by systematical PMB PCR screening for 14 pathogens and a Coggins test. In case of a PCR-positive result regarding one or several pathogen(s) in PMB, a PCR analysis for the detected pathogen(s) was then conducted on the associated UC-MSCs. Results: Ten out of 84 UC samples were contaminated upon extraction and 6/84 remained positive in primo culture. The remaining 78/84 paired PMB & UC-MSC samples were evaluated for vertical transmission; 37/78 PMB samples were PCR positive for Equid herpesvirus (EHV)-1, EHV-2, EHV-5, Theileria equi , Babesia caballi , and/or Mycoplasma spp . Hepacivirus was detected in 2/27 cases and Theiler Diseases Associated Virus in 0/27 cases (not performed on all samples due to late addition). All paired UC-MSC samples tested for the specific pathogen(s) detected in PMB were negative (37/37). Main Limitations: More data are needed regarding MSC susceptibility to most pathogens detected in PMB. Conclusions: In-process microbiological controls combined with PMB PCR screening provide a comprehensive assessment of UC-MSC exposure to infectious risk, vertical transmission risk appearing inherently low.

Abstract

Premature udder development constitutes an alarm signal in pregnant mares. The objective of this clinical case report is to highlight the importance of transabdominal ultrasound examination of the fetus in these cases and to report a unique case of prenatal diagnosis of obstructive uropathy based on the observation of severe fetal hydronephrosis and megacystitis in utero. A 4-year-old French chaser primiparous mare was referred for evaluation of premature udder development during the ninth month of pregnancy. The mare had clinical signs within normal limits, a developed and sensitive udder with secretions, and no vulvar discharge. Transrectal examination revealed the presence of an immobile fetus. Combined uteroplacental thickness was within normal limits. Transabdominal ultrasound revealed a single live fetus in posterior presentation with several abdominal abnormalities. Unilateral hydronephrosis and megacystitis lead to a hypothetical diagnosis of fetal multiple urinary tract malformation with outflow obstruction. Treatment was discontinued and the mare was monitored. Abortion occurred spontaneously a week later. Postmortem examination revealed a ruptured bladder of abnormally large dimensions and a severely distended left kidney without parenchyma (filled with free urine) and lack of permeability in the left ureter and urethra. Postmortem diagnosis was consistent with our prenatal ultrasonographic diagnosis. Even though described during human pregnancy with various etiologies and severity, prenatal diagnosis of fetal hydronephrosis and megacystitis has not been reported in equine veterinary medicine before. These malformations need to be characterized more precisely in the future. 23. Universality of market superstatistics.

Abstract

We use a key concept of the continuous-time random walk formalism, i.e., continuous and fluctuating interevent times in which mutual dependence is taken into account, to model market fluctuation data when traders experience excessive (or superthreshold) losses or excessive (or superthreshold) profits. We analytically derive a class of "superstatistics" that accurately model empirical market activity data supplied by Bogachev, Ludescher, Tsallis, and Bunde that exhibit transition thresholds. We measure the interevent times between excessive losses and excessive profits and use the mean interevent discrete (or step) time as a control variable to derive a universal description of empirical data collapse. Our dominant superstatistic value is a power-law corrected by the lower incomplete gamma function, which asymptotically tends toward robustness but initially gives an exponential. We find that the scaling shape exponent that drives our superstatistics subordinates itself and a "superscaling" configuration emerges. Thanks to the Weibull copula function, our approach reproduces the empirically proven dependence between successive interevent times. We also use the approach to calculate a dynamic risk function and hence the dynamic VaR, which is significant in financial risk analysis. Our results indicate that there is a functional (but not literal) balance between excessive profits and excessive losses that can be described using the same body of superstatistics but different calibration values and driving parameters. We also extend our original approach to cover empirical seismic activity data (e.g., given by Corral), the interevent times of which range from minutes to years. Superpositioned superstatistics is another class of superstatistics that protects power-law behavior both for short- and long-time behaviors. These behaviors describe well the collapse of seismic activity data and capture so-called volatility clustering phenomena.

Abstract

Background and Study Aims: In Belgium, 10-15% of patients infected with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) are coinfected with hepatitis C virus (HCV). Because of increased incidence of antiretroviral drug-related hepatotoxicity and more rapid clinical evolution towards end-stage liver disease, treatment of chronic hepatitis C becomes a priority. We report the results of a multi-centred Belgian study evaluating efficacy and safety of peginterferon alpha-2b plus ribavirin in HIV-HCV co-infected patients without AIDS and without decompensated liver disease., Patients and Methods: Forty-one patients, all genotypes, were screened to participate. Eventually 37 received treatment with peginterferon alpha-2b (1.5 microg/kg/week) plus daily weight-based ribavirin for 52 weeks. About one third of the patients were genotypes 1, 2/3, and genotype 4, most of the latter being of Central African origin. About 56% of the patients had severe fibrosis (Metavir score > or = F3)., Results: Sustained viral response (SVR) at 24 weeks of follow-up was observed in 10/37 (27%) of patients. SVR was higher in genotype 2/3 compared to genotype 1/4 (46.7% versus 13.6%; p = 0.06) and in low (F0-F1) versus high (F2-F4) grade fibrosis (p = 0.06). Treatment was withdrawn for side effects in 11/37 patients (30%). One Child A cirrhosis patient at the start of therapy died 7 months after treatment withdrawal as a result of severe haemolytic anaemia., Conclusions: It can be concluded that weight-based peginterferon alpha-2b plus ribavirin can be successful in selected HIV-HCV co-infected patients. Caution should be applied in patients with advanced liver disease.

Abstract

Human chromosome 16 features one of the highest levels of segmentally duplicated sequence among the human autosomes. We report here the 78,884,754 base pairs of finished chromosome 16 sequence, representing over 99.9% of its euchromatin. Manual annotation revealed 880 protein-coding genes confirmed by 1,670 aligned transcripts, 19 transfer RNA genes, 341 pseudogenes and three RNA pseudogenes. These genes include metallothionein, cadherin and iroquois gene families, as well as the disease genes for polycystic kidney disease and acute myelomonocytic leukaemia. Several large-scale structural polymorphisms spanning hundreds of kilobase pairs were identified and result in gene content differences among humans. Whereas the segmental duplications of chromosome 16 are enriched in the relatively gene-poor pericentromere of the p arm, some are involved in recent gene duplication and conversion events that are likely to have had an impact on the evolution of primates and human disease susceptibility.

Abstract

Chromosome 5 is one of the largest human chromosomes and contains numerous intrachromosomal duplications, yet it has one of the lowest gene densities. This is partially explained by numerous gene-poor regions that display a remarkable degree of noncoding conservation with non-mammalian vertebrates, suggesting that they are functionally constrained. In total, we compiled 177.7 million base pairs of highly accurate finished sequence containing 923 manually curated protein-coding genes including the protocadherin and interleukin gene families. We also completely sequenced versions of the large chromosome-5-specific internal duplications. These duplications are very recent evolutionary events and probably have a mechanistic role in human physiological variation, as deletions in these regions are the cause of debilitating disorders including spinal muscular atrophy.

Abstract

Chromosome 19 has the highest gene density of all human chromosomes, more than double the genome-wide average. The large clustered gene families, corresponding high G + C content, CpG islands and density of repetitive DNA indicate a chromosome rich in biological and evolutionary significance. Here we describe 55.8 million base pairs of highly accurate finished sequence representing 99.9% of the euchromatin portion of the chromosome. Manual curation of gene loci reveals 1,461 protein-coding genes and 321 pseudogenes. Among these are genes directly implicated in mendelian disorders, including familial hypercholesterolaemia and insulin-resistant diabetes. Nearly one-quarter of these genes belong to tandemly arranged families, encompassing more than 25% of the chromosome. Comparative analyses show a fascinating picture of conservation and divergence, revealing large blocks of gene orthology with rodents, scattered regions with more recent gene family expansions and deletions, and segments of coding and non-coding conservation with the distant fish species Takifugu.
