Abstract: A novel gas-based detector using large arrays of honeycomb cells has been developed and tested for use as a pre-shower photon multiplicity detector (PMD) for STAR and ALICE experiments. The appropriate cell design was arrived at using GARFIELD simulations. Prototype chambers with cell dimensions corresponding to STAR and ALICE were fabricated and tested at CERN PS and SPS. The charged particle detection efficiency and the pre-shower characteristics have been studied using pion and electron beams.

Abstract: A honeycomb detector consisting of a matrix of 96 closely packed hexagonal cells, each working as a proportional counter with a wire readout, was fabricated and tested at the CERN PS. The cell depth and the radial dimensions of the cell were small, in the range of 5-10 mm. The appropriate cell design was arrived at using GARFIELD simulations. Two geometries are described illustrating the effect of field shaping. The charged particle detection efficiency and the preshower characteristics have been studied using pion and electron beams. Average charged particle detection efficiency was found to be 98%, which is almost uniform within the cell volume and also within the array. The preshower data show that the transverse size of the shower is in close agreement with the results of simulations for a range of energies and converter thicknesses., To be published in NIM A

Abstract: A measurement of direct photon production in {sup 208}Pb+ {sup 208}Pb collisions at 158A GeV has been carried out in the CERN WA98 experiment. The invariant yield of direct photons in central collisions is extracted as a function of transverse momentum in the interval 0.5 1.5 GeV/c . The result constitutes the first observation of direct photons in ultrarelativistic heavy-ion collisions. It could be significant for diagnosis of quark-gluon-plasma formation.

Abstract: Recent results of the WA98 experiment with Pb induced reactions at 158. A GeV are presented. The scaling properties of the transverse energy and the charged particle multiplicity at midrapidity with the number of participants is studied. Neutral pion spectra are compared to hydrodynamical parameterizations. The analysis of collective flow at target rapidity and at midrapidity is presented. The status of the study of direct photons and the search for isospin fluctuations is discussed.

Abstract: Neutral pion production in central 158A GeV [sup 208]Pb+ [sup 208] Pb collisions has been studied in the WA98 experiment at the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron. The [pi][sup 0] transverse mass spectrum has been analyzed in terms of a thermal model with hydrodynamic expansion. The high accuracy and large kinematic coverage of the measurement allow one to limit previously noted ambiguities in the extracted freeze-out parameters. The results are shown to be sensitive to the shape of the velocity distribution at freeze-out. [copyright] [ital 1999] [ital The American Physical Society ]

Abstract: The production of neutral pions in 158A GeV {sup 208}Pb+ {sup 208}Pb collisions has been studied in the WA98 experiment at the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS). Transverse momentum spectra are studied for the range 0.3{le}m{sub T}{minus}m{sub 0}{le}4.0 GeV /c . The results for central collisions are compared to various models. The centrality dependence of the neutral pion spectral shape and yield is investigated. An invariance of the spectral shape and a simple scaling of the yield with the number of participating nucleons is observed for centralities with greater than about 30thinspthinspparticipating nucleons. Abstract: Anisotropic transverse flow has been studied with a magnetic spectrometer at midrapidity and the Plastic Ball detector at target rapidity in the WA98 experiment. Our preliminary results show the existence of directed and elliptic flow in semi-central Pb+Pb collisions. The magnitude of the directed flow is found to be significantly smaller than those observed at the AGS energies.

Abstract: The first evidence of directed flow at 158 A GeV Pb + Pb collisions is observed using the Plastic Ball detector in WA98 experiment. The azimuthal angle of the total transverse energy, Phi(o), is determined for each event using the observed protons in the Plastic Ball. A clear azimuthal asymmetry of fragments is observed with respect to Phi(o). The degree of azimuthal asymmetry is found to be largest in mid-central collisions, which is consistent with the picture of the collective flow.The p(t) spectra of particles measured in the mid-rapidity spectrometer has been studied in conjunction with the Plastic Ball, and different p(t) slopes with respect to Phi(o) for proton and pi(+) are observed.

Abstract: The production of intermediate-mass fragments ranging from Z=3 to 8 emitted in the reaction of 60 MeV alpha on an aluminum target has been experimentally studied. The energy spectra of the emitted fragments in the angular range of 20\ifmmode^\circ\else\textdegree\fi{}\char21{}130\ifmmode^\circ\else\textdegree\fi{} have been measured and the total production cross sections of each fragment have been estimated from the data. The double-differential cross-section data have been compared with the predictions made using (a) a phenomenological moving source model and (b) a binary fragmentation model. The absolute total emission cross sections for various fragments have been calculated assuming the statistical decay of a fully equilibrated compound nucleus and have been compared with the corresponding experimental estimates. It is found that the exit-channel deformation plays a significant role in the estimation of the Coulomb barrier of the separating nuclei. A theoretical procedure for the estimation of the exit-channel Coulomb barrier for the deformed system has been incorporated in the present calculation.

Abstract: We present the first large-acceptance measurement of event-wise mean transverse momentum fluctuations for Au-Au collisions at nucleon-nucleon center-of-momentum collision energy root s(NN) = 130 GeV. The observed nonstatistical fluctuations substantially exceed in magnitude fluctuations expected from the finite number of particles produced in a typical collision. The r.m.s. fractional width excess of the event-wise distribution is 13.7 +/- 0.1(stat) +/- 1.3(syst)% relative to a statistical reference, for the 15% most-central collisions and for charged hadrons within pseudorapidity range vertical bar eta vertical bar fluctuation excess is qualitatively larger than those observed at lower energies and differs markedly from theoretical expectations. Contributions to fluctuations from semihard parton scattering in the initial state and dissipation in the bulk colored medium are discussed.

Abstract: We report inclusive photon measurements about midrapidity (\y\ gammagamma decay channel. The fractional contribution of the pi(0)-->gammagamma decay to the inclusive photon spectrum decreases by 20%+/-5% between p(t)=1.65 GeV/c and p(t)=2.4 GeV/c in the most central events, indicating that relative to pi(0)-->gammagamma decay the contribution of other photon sources is substantially increasing.

Abstract: We report on the rapidity and centrality dependence of proton and anti-proton transverse mass distributions from {sup 197}Au + {sup 197}Au collisions at {radical}s{sub NN} = 130 GeV as measured by the STAR experiment at RHIC. Our results are from the rapidity and transverse momentum range of |y| < 0.5 and 0.35 < p{sub t} < 1.00 GeV/c. For both protons and anti-protons, transverse mass distributions become more convex from peripheral to central collisions demonstrating characteristics of collective expansion. The measured rapidity distributions and the mean transverse momenta versus rapidity are flat within |y| < 0.5. Comparisons of our data with results from model calculations indicate that in order to obtain a consistent picture of the proton(anti-proton) yields and transverse mass distributions the possibility of pre-hadronic collective expansion may have to be taken into account.

Abstract: We present STAR measurements of the azimuthal anisotropy parameter v{sub 2} and the binary-collision scaled centrality ratio R{sub CP} for kaons and lambdas ({Lambda} + {bar {Lambda}}) at mid-rapidity in Au+Au collisions at {radical}s{sub NN} = 200 GeV. In combination, the v{sub 2} and R{sub CP} particle-type dependencies contradict expectations from partonic energy loss followed by standard fragmentation in vacuum. We establish p{sub T} {approx} 5 GeV/c as the value where the centrality dependent baryon enhancement ends. The K{sub S}{sup 0} and {Lambda} + {bar {Lambda}} v{sub 2} values are consistent with expectations of constituent-quark-number scaling from models of hadron formation by parton coalescence or recombination.

Abstract: We report the first observations of the first harmonic (directed flow, v(1)) and the fourth harmonic (v(4)), in the azimuthal distribution of particles with respect to the reaction plane in Au+Au collisions at the BNL Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC). Both measurements were done taking advantage of the large elliptic flow (v(2)) generated at RHIC. From the correlation of v(2) with v(1) it is determined that v(2) is positive, or in-plane. The integrated v(4) is about a factor of 10 smaller than v(2). For the sixth (v(6)) and eighth (v(8)) harmonics upper limits on the magnitudes are reported.

Abstract: Measurements of the production of forward high-energy pi(0) mesons from transversely polarized proton collisions at sqrt[s]=200 GeV are reported. The cross section is generally consistent with next-to-leading order perturbative QCD calculations. The analyzing power is small at x(F) below about 0.3, and becomes positive and large at higher x(F), similar to the trend in data at sqrt[s]or =20 GeV. The analyzing power is in qualitative agreement with perturbative QCD model expectations. This is the first significant spin result seen for particles produced with p(T)1 GeV/c at a polarized proton collider.

Abstract: We present the results of charged particle fluctuations measurements in Au+Au collisions at rootS(NN)=130 GeV using the STAR detector. Dynamical fluctuations measurements are presented for inclusive charged particle multiplicities as well as for identified charged pions, kaons, and protons. The net charge dynamical fluctuations are found to be large and negative providing clear evidence that positive and negative charged p article production is correlated within the pseudorapidity range investigated. Correlations are smaller than expected based on model-dependent predictions for a resonance gas or a quark-gluon gas which undergoes fast hadronization and freeze-out. Qualitative agreement is found with comparable scaled p+p measurements and a heavy ion jet interaction generation model calculation based on independent particle collisions, although a small deviation from the 1/N scaling dependence expected from this model is observed.

Abstract: Transverse mass and rapidity distributions for charged pions, charged kaons, protons, and antiprotons are reported for square root of [sNN]=200 GeV pp and Au+Au collisions at Relativistic Heary Ion Collider (RHIC). Chemical and kinetic equilibrium model fits to our data reveal strong radial flow and long duration from chemical to kinetic freeze-out in central Au+Au collisions. The chemical freeze-out temperature appears to be independent of initial conditions at RHIC energies.

Abstract: We report measurements of single-particle inclusive spectra and two-particle azimuthal distributions of charged hadrons at high transverse momentum (high p(T)) in minimum bias and central d+Au collisions at sqrt[s(NN)]=200 GeV. The inclusive yield is enhanced in d+Au collisions relative to binary-scaled p+p collisions, while the two-particle azimuthal distributions are very similar to those observed in p+p collisions. These results demonstrate that the strong suppression of the inclusive yield and back-to-back correlations at high p(T) previously observed in central Au+Au collisions are due to final-state interactions with the dense medium generated in such collisions.

Abstract: Pion-kaon correlation functions are constructed from central Au+Au STAR data taken at sqrt[s(NN)]=130 GeV by the STAR detector at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC). The results suggest that pions and kaons are not emitted at the same average space-time point. Space-momentum correlations, i.e., transverse flow, lead to a space-time emission asymmetry of pions and kaons that is consistent with the data. This result provides new independent evidence that the system created at RHIC undergoes a collective transverse expansion.

Abstract: We report measurements of single-particle inclusive spectra and two-particle azimuthal distributions of charged hadrons at high transverse momentum (high p(T)) in minimum bias and central d+Au collisions at sqrt[s(NN)]=200 GeV. The inclusive yield is enhanced in d+Au collisions relative to binary-scaled p+p collisions, while the two-particle azimuthal distributions are very similar to those observed in p+p collisions. These results demonstrate that the strong suppression of the inclusive yield and back-to-back correlations at high p(T) previously observed in central Au+Au collisions are due to final-state interactions with the dense medium generated in such collisions.

Abstract: We report high statistics measurements of inclusive charged hadron production in Au+Au and p+p collisions at sqrt[s(NN)]=200 GeV. A large, approximately constant hadron suppression is observed in central Au+Au collisions for 5p(T)12 GeV/c. The collision energy dependence of the yields and the centrality and p(T) dependence of the suppression provide stringent constraints on theoretical models of suppression. Models incorporating initial-state gluon saturation or partonic energy loss in dense matter are largely consistent with observations. We observe no evidence of p(T)-dependent suppression, which may be expected from models incorporating jet attenuation in cold nuclear matter or scattering of fragmentation hadrons.

Abstract: First results on the measurement of localized fluctuations in the multiplicity of charged particles and photons produced in central 158 A GeV Pb+Pb collisions are presented. The charged versus neutral correlations in common phase space regions of varying azimuthal size are analyzed by two different methods. The measured results are compared to those from simulations and to those from different types of mixed events. The comparison indicates the presence of non-statistical fluctuations in both charged particle and photon multiplicities in limited azimuthal regions. Abstract: Results from the multiplicity distributions of inclusive photons and charged particles, scaling of particle multiplicities, event-by-event multiplicity fluctuations, and charged-neutral fluctuations in 158$\cdot A$ GeV Pb+Pb collisions are presented and discussed. A scaling of charged particle multiplicity as $N_{part}^{1.07\pm 0.05}$ and photons as $N_{part}^{1.12\pm 0.03}$ have been observed, indicating violation of naive wounded nucleon model. The analysis of localized charged-neutral fluctuation indicates a model-independent demonstration of non-statistical fluctuations in both charged particles and photons in limited azimuthal regions. Abstract: Three-particle correlations have been measured for identified pi(-) from central 158A GeV Pb+Pb collisions by the WA98 experiment at CERN. A substantial contribution of the genuine three-body correlation has been found as expected for a mainly chaotic and symmetric source.

Abstract: Study of elliptic emission for identified particles has been performed in 158A GeV Pb+Pb collisions near mid-rapidity region. Our preliminary results indicate the existence of the in-plane elliptic emission for {pi}{sup +} and proton, and out-of-plane elliptic emission for K+ in semi-central collisions. In addition, two-pion interferometry is studied as a function of the pair direction relative to the reaction plane.

Abstract: The photon multiplicity has been measured for the first time in S+Au collisions at 200A GeV over a wide pseudorapidity range (2.8{le}{eta}{le}5.2) employing a fine granularity preshower detector. The pseudorapidity density of photons increases with centrality, reaching {approximately}200 at the highest centrality studied. Abstract: A high granularity preshower detector has been fabricated and installed in the WA98 Experiment at the CERN SPS for measuring the spatial distribution of photons produced in the forward region in lead ion induced interactions. Photons are counted by detecting the preshower signal in plastic scintillator pads placed behind a 3 radiation length thick lead converter and applying a threshold on the scintillator signal to reject the minimum ionizing particles. Techniques to improve the imaging of the fibre and performance of the detector in the high multiplicity environment of lead-lead collisions are described. Using Monte-Carlo simulation methods and test beam data of pi- and e- at various energies the photon counting efficiency is estimated to be 68% for central and 73% for peripheral Pb+Pb collisions., 38 pages, 25 figures

Abstract: Inclusive photons of low transverse momenta have been measured in 200 GeV/nucleon {sup 32}S+Au collisions at the CERN SPS. Data were taken in the WA93 experiment using a small acceptance BGO detector with longitudinal segmentation. The results are compared to WA80 measurements for the same system and results from hadron decay calculations. Abstract: We have studied the azimuthal angle distributions of identified charged particles near mid-rapidity region in semi-central Pb+Pb collisions at SPS energies. Our preliminary results show that π+ mesons and protons seem to be emitted in the reaction plane, while out-of-plane for K+ mesons. This phenomenon might be explained by the existence of another possible effect such as in-medium potential as well as the collective motion.
