Introduction Endometriosis is a gynaecological pathology characterized by endometrial tissue similar to stroma and endometrium in extra endometrial and myometrial sites. This condition affects women’s mental health and quality of life and can elicit shame feelings. Objectives To explore the role of quality of life in endometriosis, chronic illness-related shame, self-compassion, and psychological flexibility in depressive symptoms. Methods 260 people diagnosed with endometriosis, aged 18 years or older, were recruited through patients’ associations. Participants completed an online sociodemographic and clinical questionnaire and the following self-report instruments: Anxiety, Depression, and Stress Scales (DASS-21), Endometrioses Health Profile (EHP-5), Chronic Illness-Related Shame Scale (CISS), Compassionate Engagement and Action Scales (EEAC-SC), and the Psy-Flex Scale. Results Regression analyses showed that years of education, endometriosis-related quality of life (pain, control, emotional well-being, social support, and self-image), chronic illness-related shame, and psychological flexibility were the significant predictors of depressive symptoms. On the other hand, endometriosis-related quality of life (work life, relationship with children, sexual life, relationship with healthcare professionals, treatment, and infertility) and self-compassion were not significantly associated with depressive symptoms. Conclusions The identification of chronic illness-related shame and quality of life related to endometriosis as relevant variables regarding the presence of symptoms of depression points to the relevance of early detection of these phenomena to prevent the development of depressive symptoms. Moreover, interventions targeting the development of psychological flexibility may contribute to the amelioration and prevention of depressive symptoms. Disclosure of Interest None Declared

Introduction Psychological Flexibility (PF) is a complex and extensively studied concept within the Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) framework. PF denotes one’s capacity to effectively navigate psychological distress and challenges while aligning one’s actions with deeply held values. Given its association with mental health and overall well-being, it is crucial to develop assessment tools able to capture the various facets of flexible behaviour and design strategies for its enhancement. Objectives To adapt the Portuguese version of the Multidimensional Psychological Flexibility Inventory (MPFI-24; Grégoire et al., 2020) for the adolescent population. Methods The study involved 269 adolescents aged 12 to 18 years old. Participants completed a set of self-report instruments, including the MPFI24-A, the Depression, Anxiety, and Stress Scales-21 (DASS-21), Mental Health Continuum - Short Form (MHC-SF), and the PsyFlex-A, which also assesses PF. A subsample also completed the MPFI24-A four weeks later to assess test-retest reliability. Results Two models, specifically the six-factor correlated model and the bifactor model, emerged as presenting the best fit when analysing data separately for the Flexibility and Inflexibility indices. The MPFI24-A demonstrated good reliability for both overall scores (α = .90 and α = .85, respectively) and good test-retest reliability. The PF index showed significant positive associations with PsyFlex-A scores, perceived mental health, and a moderate negative association with depression and anxiety. Conversely, the Psychological Inflexibility (PI) index presented the opposite association pattern with these variables and showed no significant correlation with PF as measured by the PsyFlex-A. The two indices of the MPFI24-A demonstrated a weak positive correlation. Significant differences between boys and girls were found for the PF index, with boys showing higher scores. No significant differences were found between boys and girls concerning the PI index. Conclusions Results suggest that the MPFI24-A is a reliable and valid instrument for assessing adolescents’ psychological flexibility and inflexibility competencies. Although further clarification of the MPFI24-A factor structure and the utility of different factors is warranted, the findings support its overall applicability. Introduction Addressing mental and physical health problems and promoting wellbeing in educational settings is a global priority. Teachers present a high risk of stress and burnout, which negatively impacts their professional performance as well as their mental and physical health. Compassion-based interventions have been found effective in promoting psychosocial and physiological wellbeing. Objectives The current paper presents preliminary findings of the impact of a 6-module Compassionate Mind Training intervention for Teachers (CMT-T) on immunological markers and the Conserved Transcriptional Response to Adversity (CTRA; a gene expression signature that involves a group of 53 genes: pro-inflammatory genes, type I interferon response and genes related to antibody synthesis). Methods A pilot non-controlled study was conducted in a sample of public-school teachers in Portugal (n=36). Participants were assessed at 4 time-points: 1) Extended Baseline Control_M0, in order to establish a within-subjects psychological and biophysiological baseline (8 weeks before the start of the CMT-T); 2) Pre-intervention_M1 (8-weeks after M0); 3) Post-intervention_M2 (8-weeks after M1); and 4) Follow-up_M3 (3 months after the CMT-T end). In all assessment moments, participants completed a set of psychological self-report measures and were assessed in immunological and epigenetic biological markers through the collection of blood. After M1, teachers completed the 8-week group CMT-T intervention and given access to its resources and materials. They were instructed to practice daily and incorporate the teachings in their personal and professional lives. All assessments and the CMT-T intervention took place at the schools. Results Preliminary data on the impact of CMT-T on Immune Response Profiling revealed that teachers’ Natural Killer (i.e., NK) cells were decreased after the CMT-T intervention. In regard to the CTRA gene expression, results showed that type one interferon response genes (e.g., IFI16, IFI27L2, IFITM2, IFITM3, IFITM4P) were decreased after the intervention. In addition, we observed that the gene c-Jun, a pro-inflammatory gene, had a decreased expression after the CMT-T intervention. Conclusions These preliminary findings seem to corroborate previous studies involving the type one interferon response, the pro-inflammatory genes and antibody synthesis genes in a signature involving 53 genes previously described as the CTRA gene signature. Furthermore, our results suggest that cultivating compassion using a compassion focused intervention may have a positive impact on markers of the immune system response, associated with how our bodies respond to stress, infection and cancer, as well as, on reducing the expression of genes related to our bodies’ response to stress and inflammation. Introduction Adolescence is a development stage that stands out by normative challenges that comprise the creation of representations about the self and the others, the definition of a sense of identity, and adaptation of emotional regulatory strategies and behaviors in social contexts, particularly within the group of peers. However, these developmental tasks can raise psychological difficulties that may facilitate the emergence of psychopathology in adolescents. Objectives Analyze the role of self-disgust in the relationship between early memories of warmth and safeness with peers and borderline personality features in adolescents. Methods Sample was composed of 451 adolescents (260 females and 185 males), with a mean of 15.55 years of age (SD = 1.49), who completed self-report questionnaires to assess early memories of warmth and safeness with peers (EMWSSPeers-A), self-disgust (MSDS-A) and borderline features (BPFS-C). Pearson’s correlation coefficients and a path analysis were performed using SPSS and PROCESS Macro. Results Girls had higher values of self-disgust and borderline features than boys, as well as similar levels in early memories of warmth and safeness with peers. The mediation model was significant and explained 54% of the variance of the borderline traits, with early emotional positive memories with peers and self-disgust dimensions contributing significantly to the explanation model. Gender and exclusion (a specific dimension of the self-disgust scale) did not have predictive power in borderline features. Conclusions Our results contribute to a better understanding of the psychological mechanisms involved in the development of borderline traits and consequently to clinical practices and research on adolescence. Introduction Psy-Flex is a brief instrument that assesses psychological flexibility defined, according to the theoretical model of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, by the set of competencies capable of leading the individual to change behavior, facilitating behaviors that are more adaptive and valued by the individual. This set of psychological skills involved in psychological flexibility is associated with psychological well-being and mental health. Objectives The present research sought to translate and adapt Psy-Flex to the Portuguese language and, consequently, to conduct the factor analysis, reliability, and validity studies of this instrument in the Portuguese population (in non-clinical and clinical samples) Methods The non-clinical sample consisted of 566 individuals (372 female and 192 male) ranging in age from 18 to 74 (M = 36.64; SD = 15.11). The clinical sample included 30 participants aged between 20 and 69 years (M=43.13 and SD= 13.85). The minimum number of years of education is 4, and the maximum is 19 (M=11.80 and SD=3.32). The non-clinical sample was filled out on an online platform the protocol that assessed psychological flexibility (Psy-Flex), Psychological Inflexibility and Flexibility (MPFI-24), anxiety and depression symptoms (PHQ-4), and perceived mental health (MHC-SF). In the clinical sample, the protocol was applied individually and face-to-face. Results Psy-Flex evidenced a unifactorial structure attested to by EFA and CFA. Invariance tests revealed the Psy-Flex model to be invariant in configural, metric, and scalar terms for male and female gender and non-clinical and clinical samples. The Psy-Flex revealed adequate reliability as assessed by Cronbach’s alpha and Composite Reliability in non-clinical and clinic samples. In non-clinical sample, the Psy-Flex showed a positive, moderate to strong, association with flexibility (measured by the MPFI-24-FP) and mental health. It also showed a negative, moderate to strong, association with MPFI-24-IP assessed inflexibility and with depression and anxiety symptoms. Age and years of schooling showed a weak positive association with Psy-Flex. Men and women differed significantly, with men showing higher values of psychological flexibility. Psy-Plex showed discriminant validity, differentiating between non-clinical and clinical groups. The non-clinical group showed significantly higher values of psychological flexibility. Conclusions The present study was innovative in making available a new instrument in the Portuguese language that revealed excellent psychometric characteristics that could be used in community and clinical samples. Introduction Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) is an impairing disorder with distinct features such as instability in self-image, relationships and affect. Considering the developmental nature of BPD, borderline features are not rarely exhibited in adolescence. These features tend to be associated with depression and suicide ideation, as well as with a negative self-to-self relationship. Self-compassion has been consistently identified as a positive attitude with oneself when experiencing suffering. Objectives The aim of the current study was to explore the role of self-compassion in the relationship between borderline features and suicide ideation, when controlled depressive symptoms. Methods Sample was composed by 665 adolescents (58.5% females and 41.5% males), with a mean of 15.54 years of age (SD = 1.52), who completed self-report questionnaires. Data was analyzed using SPSS (version 23) and PROCESS Macro. Results showed that girls presented higher borderline features and suicide ideation and lower self-compassion compared to boys. The moderation model explained 66% of suicide ideation, with gender and depression as covariates. The interaction of borderline features and self-compassion had a unique and significant effect on suicide ideation, when controlled depression and gender. Adolescents with higher levels of borderline features and lower self-compassion presented significantly higher suicide ideation, compared to those with higher self-compassion. Conclusions These findings suggest that developing self-compassion in adolescents with evident borderline features might attenuate their tendency to think about committing suicide.

Roads and roadsides provide dispersal channels for non-native invasive alien plants (IAP), many of which hold devastating impacts in the economy, human health, biodiversity and ecosystem functionality. Remote sensing is an essential tool for efficiently assessing and monitoring the dynamics of IAP along roads. In this study, we explore the potentialities of object based image analysis (OBIA) approach to map several invasive plant species along roads using very high spatial resolution imagery. We compared the performance of OBIA approaches implemented in one open source software (OTB/Monteverdi) against those available in two proprietary programs (eCognition and ArcGIS). We analysed the images by two sequential processes. First, we obtained a land-cover map for 15 study sites by segmenting the images with the algorithms Mean Shift Segmentation (MSS) and Multiresolution Segmentation (MRS), and by classifying the segmented images with the algorithms Support Vector Machine (SVM), Nearest Neighbour Classifier (NNC) and Maximum Likelihood Classifier (MLC). We created a mask using the polygons classified as non-vegetation to crop the images of the 15 study sites. Second, we repeated the previous segmentation and classification steps over the 15 masked images of vegetated areas using the same algorithms. OTB/Monteverdi, with MSS and SVM algorithms, showed to be a good software for land-cover mapping (OA = 87.0%), as well as ArcGIS, with MSS and MLC algorithms (OA = 84.3%). However, these two programs, using the same segmentation algorithms, did not achieve good accuracy results when mapping IAP species (OAOTB/Monteverdi = 63.3%; OAArcGIS = 45.7%). eCognition, with MRS and NNC algorithms, reached better classification results in both land-cover and IAP maps (OALand-cover = 95.7%; OAInvasive-plant = 92.8%). ’Bare soil’ and ‘Road’, and ‘A. donax’ were the classes with best and worst overall accuracy, respectively, when mapping land-cover classes in the three programs. ‘Other trees’ was the class with the most accurate and significant differences in the three programs when mapping IAP species. The separation of each invasive species should be improved with a phenology-based design of field surveys. This study demonstrates the effectiveness of sequential segmentation and classification of RS data for mapping and monitoring plant invasions along linear infrastructures, which allows to reduce the time, cost and hazard of extensive field campaigns along roadsides.

Quando não devidamente maturados, os compostos orgânicos podem causar fitotoxicidade, prejudicando o desenvolvimento das culturas e a produção. Esse efeito está frequentemente relacionado com a libertação de ácidos orgânicos de baixo peso molecular, de azoto na forma amoniacal e de dióxido de carbono. Este estudo tem como objectivo avaliar a qualidade de correctivos orgânicos em comercialização no Entre Douro e Minho. Para tal, procedeu-se a uma amostragem dos correctivos orgânicos disponíveis em treze cooperativas agrícolas da região do Entre Douro e Minho, e à elaboração de um pequeno inquérito. Na apreciação da qualidade, utilizaram-se os métodos químicos e biológicos. Os resultados obtidos permitem concluir que a qualidade dos compostos deve ser melhorada. Importa referir que, embora os resultados da apreciação da qualidade dos compostos efectuados com base na proposta de norma para a apreciação da qualidade do composto orgânico de Souteiro & Baptista (2001) indiquem que todos os compostos avaliados apresentam parâmetros químicos limitativos, os resultados da avaliação biológica revelam-se mais positivos.The maturity degree is a basic parameter in the apreciation of the quality of organic composts. When unstable or without enough maturity the organic amendment can cause phytotoxity by liberation of volatile organic acids, ammonium or carbon dioxide. With the present work we attempt to quantify the effective quality of composts in comercialization at Entre-Douro-e Minho farmers associations. Quality of composts were evaluated by chemical and biological methods. The results allow us to conclude that the quality of the organic composts must be improved. While the results of the chemical evaluation classify all samples as bad, biological evaluations bellow a better judgement.

Na actualidade, uma percentagem significativa da população mundial depara-se com a necessidade de tomar medicação e de adoptar medidas para controlar e tratar, tanto as patologias agudas como as crónicas. Os doentes portadores de patologia crónica são os que menos aderem à terapêutica. Estima-se que, nos países desenvolvidos, apenas 50% dos doentes crónicos cumprem o tratamento acordado com o profissional de saúde, condicionando a economia, o bem-estar e a qualidade de vida da sociedade. A compreensão deste fenómeno implica tomar conhecimento dos vários modelos conceptuais existentes, bem como analisar os seus pressupostos teóricos. É de capital interesse conhecer os factores que influenciam a adesão, percebendo a associação estabelecida entre variáveis internas e externas ao doente, assim como as variáveis relacionais. Desta forma, poder-se-ão delinear estratégias que promovam a adesão ao regime terapêutico, quer a nível educacional, quer comportamental, ou conjugando as duas dimensões. Na avaliação da adesão terapêutica poder-se-á recorrer a métodos directos e indirectos, sendo os directos mais fidedignos, mas menos utilizados devido ao seu elevado custo.

Hoje a família é uma realidade já reconhecida e consagrada pela União Europeia nas suas vertentes humana, económica e social. A família, a economia e a organização social não são realidades que se ignorem umas às outras ou sejam totalmente independentes umas das outras. Pelo contrário, são realidades que interagem e compete aos Estados-Membros assegurar a protecção jurídica, económica e social da família, (Presidente do Comité Económico e Social Europeu, 2007).

Portugal é um dos países europeus com maior prevalência de obesidade infantil, o que se traduz num problema de saúde crescente não só na geração actual, mas que se repercutirá na próxima, dada a grande probabilidade da doença transitar para a idade adulta. Estudos em diversos países têm revelado que os pais se mostram despreocupados e pouco conscientes do estado nutricional das crianças, dada a tendência para subestimarem o peso excessivo dos seus filhos. Ajudar os pais a reconhecerem que a obesidade nas crianças é um problema de saúde e a identificarem o verdadeiro estado nutricional dos seus filhos, pode ser o primeiro passo na promoção de um estilo de vida mais saudável. Com este artigo pretendeu-se identificar a percepção dos pais (mãe e pai) acerca do estado nutricional do filho em idade pré-escolar e analisar a sua relação com variáveis sócio-demográficas e clínicas.

We analysed the helminth fauna associated with the lizard Mabuya dorsivittata (Scincidae) from a high-altitude area in Itatiaia National Park, Rio de Janeiro State, Brazil. Of the 16 lizards examined, 12 (75%) were infected by at least one helminth. Only two helminth species were found: Physaloptera retusa and Skrjabinodon spinosulus (Nematoda), the former with a prevalence of 68.8% and a mean infection intensity of 3.6 ± 2.8 and the latter with a prevalence of 56.3% and a mean infection intensity of 2.6 ± 2.6. The helminth fauna of the studied population of Mabuya dorsivittata was considerably poorer than those of other previously studied populations of congeners.

Intracranial aneurysms are rare in the pediatric population, especially in infancy, representing less than 1% of all aneurysms. In this age group, they are more frequent at the carotid bifurcation and in the posterior circulation, with a greater number of giant aneurysms and spontaneous aneurysm thrombosis when compared with the adults. They are life-threatening, and, therefore, early investigation, characterization of the lesion, and treatment are essential. The appropriate management depends on the child’s condition, aneurysm characteristics, and the experience of a multidisciplinary team. Noninvasive and radiation-free imagiological studies play an important role in the diagnosis and follow-up of these young patients. We present the case of a 3-month-old boy with an intracranial hemorrhage secondary to the rupture of a giant aneurysm of the anterior communicating artery complex, with spontaneous thrombosis, which is a rare situation due to its location. A conservative approach was assumed and noninvasive evolutive imagiological studies revealed a reduction in the thrombosed aneurysm size and no signs of recanalization. The child recovered to his baseline neurological condition and has had no rehemorrhage until 5 years of follow-up.

Primary liver cancer is the fourth leading cause of cancer-related deaths worldwide, with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) comprising the vast majority of primary liver malignancies. Imaging plays a central role in HCC diagnosis and management. As a result, the content and structure of radiology reports are of utmost importance in guiding clinical management. The Liver Imaging Reporting and Data System (LI-RADS) provides guidance for standardized reporting of liver observations in patients who are at risk for HCC. LI-RADS standardized reporting intends to inform patient treatment and facilitate multidisciplinary communication and decisions, taking into consideration individual clinical factors. Depending on the context, observations may be reported individually, in aggregate, or as a combination of both. LI-RADS provides two templates for reporting liver observations: in a single continuous paragraph or in a structured format with keywords and imaging findings. The authors clarify terminology that is pertinent to reporting, highlight the benefits of structured reports, discuss the applicability of LI-RADS for liver CT and MRI, review the elements of a standardized LI-RADS report, provide guidance on the description of LI-RADS observations exemplified with two case-based reporting templates, illustrate relevant imaging findings and components to be included when reporting specific clinical scenarios, and discuss future directions. We have previously demonstrated that acute third ventricle injections of both Pb2+ and Cd2+ impair the dipsogenic response elicited by three different situations: dehydration and central cholinergic or angiotensinergic stimulation. ß-Adrenergic activation is part of the multifactorial integrated systems operating in drinking behavior control in the central nervous system. In the present study acute third ventricle injections of Pb2+ (3, 30 and 300 pmol/rat) or Cd2+ (0.3, 3 and 30 pmol/rat) blocked the dipsogenic response induced by third ventricle injections of isoproterenol (ISO; 160 nmol/rat) in a dose-dependent manner. Normohydrated animals receiving ISO + NaAc (sodium acetate) or saline (controls) displayed a high water intake after 120 min (ISO + saline = 5.78 ± 0.54 ml/100 g; ISO + NaAc = 6.00 ± 0.6 ml/100 g). After the same period, animals receiving ISO but pretreated with PbAc at the highest dose employed (300 pmol/rat) drank 0.78 ± 0.23 ml/100 g while those receiving ISO and pretreated with the highest dose of CdCl2 (30 pmol/rat) presented a water intake of 0.7 ± 0.30 ml/100 g. Third ventricle injections of CdCl2 (3 nmol/rat) or PbAc (3 nmol/rat) did not modify food intake in rats deprived of food for 24 h. Thus, general central nervous system depression explaining the antidipsogenic action of the metals can be safely excluded. It is concluded that both Pb2+ and Cd2+ inhibit water intake induced by central ß-adrenergic stimulation

Currently in HDR brachytherapy planning, a manual fine-tuning of an objective function is necessary to obtain case-specific valid plans. This study intends to facilitate this process by proposing a patient-specific inverse planning algorithm for HDR prostate brachytherapy: GPU-based multi-criteria optimization (gMCO). Two GPU-based optimization engines including simulated annealing (gSA) and a quasi-Newton optimizer (gL-BFGS) were implemented to compute multiple plans in parallel. After evaluating the equivalence and the computation performance of these two optimization engines, one preferred optimization engine was selected for the gMCO algorithm. Five hundred sixty-two previously treated prostate HDR cases were divided into validation set (100) and test set (462). In the validation set, the number of Pareto optimal plans to achieve the best plan quality was determined for the gMCO algorithm. In the test set, gMCO plans were compared with the physician-approved clinical plans. Our results indicated that the optimization process is equivalent between gL-BFGS and gSA, and that the computational performance of gL-BFGS is up to 67 times faster than gSA. Over 462 cases, the number of clinically valid plans was 428 (92.6%) for clinical plans and 461 (99.8%) for gMCO plans. The number of valid plans with target [Formula: see text] coverage greater than 95% was 288 (62.3%) for clinical plans and 414 (89.6%) for gMCO plans. The mean planning time was 9.4 s for the gMCO algorithm to generate 1000 Pareto optimal plans. In conclusion, gL-BFGS is able to compute thousands of SA equivalent treatment plans within a short time frame. Powered by gL-BFGS, an ultra-fast and robust multi-criteria optimization algorithm was implemented for HDR prostate brachytherapy. Plan pools with various trade-offs can be created with this algorithm. A large-scale comparison against physician approved clinical plans showed that treatment plan quality could be improved and planning time could be significantly reduced with the proposed gMCO algorithm.

We studied the parasitism by larvae of the chigger mite Eutrombicula alfreddugesi on the lizard community of Restinga de Jurubatiba, Rio de Janeiro State, Southeastern Brazil. We investigated the patterns of infestation (prevalence and intensity) of chigger mites in four sympatric lizards: Tropidurus torquatus, Mabuya agilis, M. macrorhyncha and Cnemidophorus littoralis. All lizards collected were checked for the presence of mites, which were counted under stereomicroscope. We tested the relationship between intensity of infestation and lizard body size for each species using regression analysis. The prevalences and mean intensities (+ one standard deviation) of infestation on each host species were, respectively: 100%; 86.4 + 94.6 in T. torquatus (n = 62); 100%; 20.9 + 9.3 in M. agilis (n = 7); 100%; 11.1 + 13.1 in M. macrorhyncha (n = 12); and 95.2%; 19.1 + 16.8 in C. littoralis (n = 21). Only for C. littoralis did body size significantly affect the intensity of infestation (r = 0.27, p = 0.02). For all lizard species, the body parts where chiggers occurred with the highest intensity were those of skin folds and joint regions.

Abstract Although currently there is already a set of studies regarding ecological aspects of some particular reptile and amphibian species living in Brazilian sandy coastal plains (including the so-called “restinga” and “campo nativo” habitats), there is comparatively few information on the species composition usually associated to these environments. During 31 years (1988-2019) of herpetological studies carried out in sandy coastal plains environments by our research team of the Laboratory of Vertebrate Ecology (Department of Ecology, Universidade do Estado do Rio de Janeiro, in Rio de Janeiro Brazil) we have surveyed reptile and amphibian communities and performed different studies with similar methods in 70 sites from 10 different states along the Brazilian coast. Our surveys resulted in records of 87 species of reptile (five turtles, two crocodylians, six amphisbaenians, 36 lizards and 39 snakes) from 24 families, and 77 species of anuran amphibians from nine families. We have studied multiple natural history topics for anurans and reptiles which resulted in the publication of some specific ecological studies, especially regarding some species, encompassing population and community ecology, foraging and feeding habits, species activity, thermoregulation, reproduction, use of microhabitats, and parasitism by ecto and endoparasites. Our results along these three decades have also contributed for the description of four new lizard species (Ameivula nativo, Glaucomastix littoralis, G. abaetensis and G. itabaianensis). Our studies constitute an important contribution to the knowledge of the ecology of anuran amphibians and reptiles in these ecosystems, as well as to the conservation of sandy coastal plains environment. The checklist presented in this study, based on our records of sandy coastal plains herpetofauna, provides for many localities along the Brazilian coast, the needed knowledge on species occurrence, including the presence of endemic and/or endangered species, which can be of value for many conservation actions.
