1. Possible effects of clustering structure in the competition between fast emission processes and compound nucleus decay

Abstract: The attention to nuclear clustering has been renewed due to the study of weakly bound nuclei at the drip lines. In particular, clustering structural properties in medium-mass systems have been studied by looking at the competition between the evaporation and pre-equilibrium particle emission in central collisions. Although for light nuclei at an excitation energy close to the particle separation value there are experimental evidence of such structure effects, this is still not the case for heavier systems since the determination of pre-formed clusters within nuclear matter is less obvious. Two systems, leading to the same 81Rb* compound nucleus, have been studied at the same beam velocity 16 AMeV: 16O + 65Cu and 19F + 62Ni. The experiment has been performed using the GARFIELD + RCo detection system installed at the Legnaro National Laboratories.Light charged particles energy distributions and multiplicities have been compared with different statistical and dynamical model calculations. From the first comparison between the two systems a difference in the fast α -decay channel has been evidenced, which can be related to the difference in the projectile structure. Recent data analysis results and comparisons with model calculations are presented in this contribution.

Abstract: “Beta beams” produce collimated pure electron (anti)neutrino beams by accelerating beta active ions to high energies and having them decay in a racetrack shaped storage ring of 7 km circumference, the decay ring. EUROnu beta beams are based on CERN infrastructures and existing machines. Using existing machines may be an advantage for the cost evaluation, but will also constrain the physics performance. The isotope pair of choice for the beta beam is ^{6}He and ^{18}Ne. However, before the EUROnu studies one of the required isotopes, ^{18}Ne, could not be produced in rates that satisfy the needs for physics of the beta beam. Therefore, studies of alternative beta emitters, ^{8}Li and ^{8}B, with properties interesting for a beta beam have been proposed and have been studied within EUROnu. These alternative isotopes could be produced by using a small storage ring, in which the beam traverses a target, creating the ^{8}Li and ^{8}B isotopes. This production ring, the injection linac and the target system have been evaluated. Measurements of the cross section of the reactions to produce the beta beam isotopes show interesting results. A device to collect the produced isotopes from the target has been developed and tested. However, the yields of ^{8}Li and ^{8}B, using the production ring for production of ^{8}Li and ^{8}B, is not yet, according to simulations, giving the rates of isotopes that would be needed. Therefore, a new method of producing the ^{18}Ne isotope has been developed and tested giving good production rates. A 60 GHz ECRIS prototype, the first in the world, was developed and tested for ion production with contributions from EUROnu. The decay ring lattices for the ^{8}Li and ^{8}B have been developed and the lattice for ^{6}He and ^{18}Ne has been optimized to ensure the high intensity ion beam stability.

Abstract: The EUROnu project has studied three possible options for future, high intensity neutrino oscillation facilities in Europe. The first is a Super Beam, in which the neutrinos come from the decay of pions created by bombarding targets with a 4 MW proton beam from the CERN High Power Superconducting Proton Linac. The far detector for this facility is the 500 kt MEMPHYS water Cherenkov, located in the Fréjus tunnel. The second facility is the Neutrino Factory, in which the neutrinos come from the decay of μ^{+} and μ^{-} beams in a storage ring. The far detector in this case is a 100 kt magnetized iron neutrino detector at a baseline of 2000 km. The third option is a Beta Beam, in which the neutrinos come from the decay of beta emitting isotopes, in particular ^{6}He and ^{18}Ne, also stored in a ring. The far detector is also the MEMPHYS detector in the Fréjus tunnel. EUROnu has undertaken conceptual designs of these facilities and studied the performance of the detectors. Based on this, it has determined the physics reach of each facility, in particular for the measurement of CP violation in the lepton sector, and estimated the cost of construction. These have demonstrated that the best facility to build is the Neutrino Factory. However, if a powerful proton driver is constructed for another purpose or if the MEMPHYS detector is built for astroparticle physics, the Super Beam also becomes very attractive.

Abstract: The structure of light-to-medium mass nuclei is crucial to understand exotic phenomena in nuclear structure, including the appearance of molecular effects in light nuclei and their impact in nuclear astrophysics. In this paper, a new experiment to probe one-proton spectroscopic factors of bound and unbound states in the sd-nucleus 33Cl is discussed. The experiment exploits the reaction 32S(3He, d)33Cl* at 9.68 MeV bombarding energy. This reaction is suitable to probe the single-particle structure of 33Cl states with respect to the population of 1d 3/2, 1f 7/2 and 2p 3/2 shells. Crucial aspects of the investigation are the use of an enriched, high-purity, 32S target and a new generation hodoscope with improved angular resolution, allowing to obtain high-precision angular distribution of the differential cross section in a broad angular range. Results are interpreted by means of finite-range DWBA and coupled-channel calculations.

Abstract: In this paper the technological aspects of the FAZIA array will be explored. After a productive commissioning phase, FAZIA blocks started to measure and give very useful data to explore the physics of Fermi energy heavy-ion reactions. This was possible thanks to many technical measures and innovations developed in the commissioning phase and tuned during the first experimental campaigns. This paper gives a detailed description of the present status of the FAZIA setup from the electronic and mechanical point of view, trying also to trace a path for new improvements and refinements of the apparatus., 17 pages, 9 figures

Abstract: In this paper, we report a detailed study on the de-excitation of the 46Ti compound nucleus populated by means of four different reactions: 16O + 30Si at 7 and 8 AMeV, 18O + 28Si at 7 AMeV and 19F + 27Al at 7 AMeV. The GARFIELD detection array was used to measure the light charged particles and the heavy fragments emitted. This setup covers a large fraction of the solid angle with high-granularity. Complete events are chosen through total charge (Z TOT = 22) detection. Fusion-evaporation events are selected based on the condition that only one heavy fragment is detected in coincidence with the light charged particles. The analysis of global observables, such as charge distribution and light charged particle multiplicities, is compatible with the formation of a thermalized compound nucleus for all the four reactions. Nevertheless, an enhanced emission of α-particles with respect to a pure statistical picture is observed at very forward angles (α-particles.

Abstract: The elastic scattering in the reaction $$^{7}$$ 7 Li+$$^{208}$$ 208 Pb was investigated in the bombarding energy range from 25 to 39 MeV. The real and imaginary parts of the optical potential were analyzed by using a phenomenological potential. A dispersion relation analysis is presented in order to investigate the threshold anomaly effect. It is concluded that $$^{7}$$ 7 Li has an intermediate behavior between the tightly bound nuclei such as $$^{16}$$ 16 O and the loosely bound nuclei such as $$^{6}$$ 6 Li where the lack of the threshold anomaly is unambiguously observed. Reaction cross sections are also extracted from the elastic scattering data and its comparison with the ones of other systems has been performed to draw hints on the effect of the breakup channel.

Abstract: The 4He(4He,4He)4He* inelastic scattering was revisited in a new coincidence measurement at the MAGNEX facility of Istituto Nazionale di Fisica Nucleare – Laboratori Nazionali del Sud. The 4He + 4He → 4He + 4He* → 4He + 3H + 1H and 4He + 4He → 4He + 4He* → 4He + 3He + n reactions were measured simultaneously by detecting the 4He particles at the MAGNEX magnetic spectrometer in coincidence with the 3H and 3He at the OSCAR silicon telescope. The main concept of the experiment is described and the data reduction strategy is reported.

Abstract: International audience; The neutron-proton (n-p) equilibration process in Ca48+Ca40 at 35 MeV/nucleon bombarding energy is experimentally estimated by means of the isospin transport ratio. Experimental data are collected with a subset of the FAZIA telescope array, which permits us to determine the Z and N of detected fragments. For the first time, the quasiprojectile (QP) evaporative channel is compared with the QP breakup one in a homogeneous and consistent way, pointing to comparable n-p equilibration, which suggests a close interaction time between projectile and target independently of the exit channel. Moreover, in the QP evaporative channel n-p equilibration is compared with the prediction of the antisymmetrized molecular dynamics model coupled with the Gemini statistical model as an afterburner, showing a higher probability of proton and neutron transfers in the simulation with respect to the experimental data.

Abstract: Experimental results concerning the dynamical fission of quasiprojectiles in semiperipheral collisions for the system Kr80+Ca48 at 35 MeV/nucleon are presented. Data have been collected with four blocks of the FAZIA setup in the first physics experiment of the FAZIA Collaboration. The degree of isospin equilibration between the two fission fragments and its dependence on their charge asymmetry is investigated. The data are compared with the results of the AMD model coupled to GEMINI as an afterburner, in order to get hints about the timescale of the process.

Abstract: The FAZIA apparatus is a new detector designed for the Fermi energy domain for charged particles based on three stages telescopes: Silicon detector (300 μm thick), Silicon detector (500 μm thick) and CsI(Tl) (10 cm). Using the ΔE-E technique and the Pulse Shape Analysis (PSA) it permits the charge and mass discrimination up to more than Z=20. In the following, some details about the FAZIA detectors and electronics, their performance and the frst experimental campaigns already performed will be discussed.

Abstract: Light charged particles emitted by the compound nucleus $^{158}\mathrm{Er}$ produced in the reaction $^{32}\mathrm{S}$ $(180 \mathrm{MeV})+^{126}\mathrm{Te}$, at the excitation energy ${E}_{x}=92$ MeV, have been measured at Laboratori Nazionali di Legnaro in coincidence with fission fragments and evaporation residues. The $4\ensuremath{\pi}$ detector array $8\ensuremath{\pi}\mathrm{LP}$ coupled to a system of parallel-plate avalanche counters to detect evaporation residues has been used. Data have been analyzed in the framework of the statistical model of evaporation with the code pace2_n11. This enlarged version of the code pace2 has been used to reproduce the large set of observables measured in the fusion-evaporation and fusion-fission channels along with experimental prescission neutron multiplicity and fission cross section taken from literature. It is found that the simultaneous reproduction of the prescission neutron, proton, and $\ensuremath{\alpha}$-particle multiplicities can be obtained with zero fission delay without dynamical effects. However, the same set of model input parameters does not allow us to reproduce proton and $\ensuremath{\alpha}$-particle multiplicities in the evaporation channel. Extensive calculations, with different sets of parameters, show the limits of the statistical model in reproducing the whole set of data. This work evidences the importance of measuring a large set of observables in order to obtain a reliable description of the decay of the compound nucleus, and in particular of the fission process.

Abstract: International audience; The proton energy calibration and the corresponding identification efficiency of the Thallium activated Cesium Iodide (CsI(Tl)) crystals of the Fazia detection system have been studied in the range of 59–180 MeV by using the proton beam delivered by the cyclotron of the CCB (Cyclotron Center Bronowice) facility. The light output versus energy is linear in the lower portion of the investigated energy range while showing a deviation from linearity on the higher energy side. The effects of proton induced nuclear collisions have been identified and estimated via Pulse Shape Analysis in CsI(Tl) crystals. Experimental efficiency for proton identification in the examined energy range is deduced and compared with GEANT4 simulations. For a well collimated crystal, and at the highest considered energy, the efficiency value comes out to be about 70%.

Abstract: Proton energy calibration and identification efficiency of few Thallium activated Cesium Iodide (CsI(Tl)) crystals of the FAZIA detection system, have been studied in the range 59-180 MeV by using the proton beam delivered by the cyclotron of the CCB (Cyclotron Center Bronowice) facility. We observe that the light output versus energy is linear in the lower investigated energy range while showing a deviation from linearity above 140 MeV. The effects of proton induced nuclear reactions and multiple scattering causing incomplete energy deposition (IED) events have been identified and estimated via Pulse Shape Analysis in CsI(Tl) crystals. The measured experimental efficiency for proton identification in the examined energy range is then compared with GEANT4 simulations. For a centered collimated irradiation on the crystal, and at the highest measured energy, the resulting experimental efficiency value is about 70%.

Abstract: The study of the emitted particles, comparing pre-equilibrium and thermal components, is a useful tool to examine the nuclear structure of emitters. Possible clustering effects, which may change the expected decay chain probability, could be highlighted on the competition between different reaction mechanisms. The NUCL-EX collaboration (INFN, Italy) has carried out an extensive research campaign on pre-equilibrium emission of light charged particles from hot nuclei. In this framework, the reactions 16O+30Si, 18O+28Si, 19F+27Al at 7 AMeV and 16O+30Si at 8 AMeV have been carried out using the GARFIELD+RCo array at Legnaro National Laboratories. Some anomalies in the α-particle emission channels have been evidenced in the measurement reported above, showing in an exclusive way the observed effects related to the entrance channels. The experimental results are compared to model prediction, for which the same filtering and complete event selection have been applied.

Abstract: Four α-particles as a final state of 16O* quasi-projectile decayproduced in peripheral 16O+12C reactions at 130 MeV is thoroughly studied. The differentdecay channels leading to the four α-particles final state are reconstructed by carrying out an event-by-event analysis of α correlations in the population of intermediate 8Be and 12C. Although small, a non negligible contribution due to 8Begs evaporation is found.A comparison between predictions of an accurate Hauser-Feshbach decay code and branching ratios of the different decay channels is performed. Significant deviations are observed, among these the Hoyle state population which is considerably lower than the one predicted according to the statistical model, thus suggesting possible structure effects in the Coulomb barrier and/or in the transmission coefficients.

Abstract: The 32S(3He,d)33Cl one-proton transfer reaction is a powerful tool to investigate the spectroscopy of low-lying states in the proton-rich 33Cl nucleus. However, the extraction of firm differential cross-section data at various angles to benchmark and constrain theoretical models is made challenging by the presence of competitive reactions on target contaminants. In this paper we report on a recent measurement using a new generation hodoscope of silicon detectors, capable to detect and identify emitted deuterons down to energies of the order of 2 MeV. The high angular segmentation of our hodoscope combined with a suitable target to control possible contaminants, allowed to unambiguously disentangle the contribution of various states in 33Cl, in particular the 2.352 MeV state lying just few tens of keV above the proton separation energy.

Abstract: International audience; The four α-particle decay of the excited 16O* quasi-projectile (QP) produced in peripheral 16O + 12C reactions at 130 MeV is studied in detail. The different decay channels leading to the four α-particle final state are reconstructed from an event-by-event analysis of α correlations through the population of intermediate 8Be and 12C resonant states. A small but non-negligible contribution of 8Be gs evaporation is observed. The branching ratios of the different evaporation channels are compared to the prediction of an Hauser-Feshbach code (once characteristics of the QP source are extracted from the experimental data), which very accurately reproduces all the inclusive observables of the reaction. However, significative deviations are observed. In particular, the experimental population of the Hoyle state is significantly lower than the predictions of the statistical model, suggesting possible structure effects in the Coulomb barrier and/or in the transmission coefficients.

Abstract: Particle identification plays a crucial role in the study of isospin dynamics, and several identification techniques have been developed in the last decades. Amongst them, the pulse shape analysis methods allow to identify those fragments that are fully stopped in a single detector layer by studying the shape of the signal induced by the impinging fragment. The correlation of the maximum of the induced current signal with the energy of the fragment is known to give a good isotopic identification, but requires to acquire the current signal. However, when the current signal isn't available, it can be reconstructed from the digitized charge signal. The algorithms used for the reconstruction are presented briefly along with the first results obtained during the DIGIGARF experiment at LNL.

We have recently measured the 32S(3He,d)33Cl reaction at 9.8 MeV incident energy by using a new generation hodoscope of silicon detectors, capable to detect and identify emitted deuterons down to energies of the order of 2 MeV. The high angular segmentation of our hodoscope allowed to unambiguously disentangle the contribution of one-proton transfer reactions in the ground state of 33Cl and in its 0.810 MeV, 2.352 MeV, 2.685 MeV, 2.846 MeV excited states from contaminant deuteron-emitting reactions. These data will be crucial to help to constrain Jπ and spectroscopic factor C 2 Sp values of low-lying 33Cl states, still ambiguous in the literature. The present status of the analysis is discussed in the paper.

Abstract: The detection of thermal neutrons is increasingly important for several fields of interest, so new versatile, manageable and adaptable detectors are needed for applications in different environments and situations. To date, scintillators for thermal neutrons available on the market are fragile and with low adaptability. In this work, flexible and robust thermal neutron scintillators with improved properties as compared to commercial ZnS:Ag based phosphors are produced. The scintillators are produced by mixing ZnS:Ag powder and 6LiF nano-crystals in polysiloxane binders. 6LiF nano-crystals are synthesized by co-precipitation method, and the detection efficiency is optimized by tuning the crystal size through different solvent/co-solvent ratios. Then, the detection yield to thermal neutrons is investigated as related both to the crystal size and to the binder. Two different siloxanes, either with pendant phenyl groups or with aliphatic groups are used, the former being intrinsically fluorescent and with higher polarizability than the latter. The response to γ -rays is also evaluated. Lastly, the right combination of base resin and 6LiF crystals size allows to produce flexible scintillators for thermal neutrons with performances comparable to the commercial standard and with higher mechanical robustness and stability.

Abstract: In this paper we discuss new experimental data on the one-proton transfer reaction 32S(3He, d)33Cl* at 9.68 MeV bombarding energy. An enriched 32S target and a high-granularity hodoscope were used to obtain data for proton transfer reactions to bound and unbound states in 33Cl. Angular distributions were interpreted by means of finite-range DWBA and coupled-channel calculations. Abstract: Worldwide efforts to tackle the nature of exotic nuclei comprise the construction of new-generation Radioactive Ion Beam facilities. The Italian community is deeply involved in the process and the construction of SPES at Legnaro National Laboratories (INFN) is progressing. This contribution describes the layout of SPES in all its flavours, from Nuclear Physics to Applications in Nuclear Medicine and Neutron Physics. In particular, the status of the SPES-β ISOL facility, together with some of the relevant physics cases and the associated equipment are described.

Abstract: Synthesis of oleic acid stabilized ZnS nanocrystals activated with Mn is pursued. A hydrothermal method where high pressure and temperature are applied to control the nanocrystals growth is adopted. Capping the nanoparticle surface with oleic acid (OA) improved light output. Samples loaded with both the phosphor and the neutron sensitizer have been produced and tested in a preliminary test as alpha particle detectors and secondly as thermal neutron detectors. The results support further development for siloxane-based scintillator detectors employing ZnS (Mn) nanoparticles.

Abstract: New near-infrared photoluminescence bands were observed in neutron-irradiated spinel single crystal upon excitation by a 532 nm laser. The surface morphology of the unirradiated and fast neutron-irradiated samples was investigated using atomic force microscopy and scanning probe microscopy. Fast neutron-irradiated samples show a strong emission peak at 1685 nm along with weak bands at 1065 and 2365 nm. The temperature dependence of the photoluminescence intensity was also measured. At lower temperatures, the dominant peak at 1685 nm shifts toward lower energy whereas the other peaks remain fixed. Activation energies of luminescence quenching were estimated to be 5.7 and 54.6 meV for the lower and higher temperature regions respectively.

Abstract: Nuclear viscosity is an irreplaceable ingredient of nuclear fission collective dynamical models. It drives the exchange of energy between the collective variables and the thermal bath of single particle degrees of freedom. Its dependence on the shape and temperature is a matter of controversy. By using systems of intermediate fissility we have demonstrated in a recent study that the viscosity parameters is larger for compact shapes, and decreases for larger deformations of the fissioning system, at variance with the conclusions of the statistical model modified to include empirically viscosity and time scales. In this contribution we propose an experimental scenario to highlight the possible dependence of the viscosity from the temperature.

Abstract: A new modular and high versatility hodoscope , OSCAR, has been developed and characterized. The aim of this hodoscope is to work as an ancillary detector of present large acceptance heavy ion detectors in specific angular regions where low thresholds and high granularities are needed. We discuss the capabilities of OSCAR in the Δ E–E identification of very low energy light particles, providing a precise map of the thickness uniformity of the Δ E (SSSSD, 20 μ m ) stage and showing how the thickness gradient affects the identification of particles. Energy spectra of light identified particles produced in Ca+Ca collisions at 35 AMeV are used to investigate isospin transport phenomena involving the emission of low energy particles from the quasi-target (QT) source in semi-peripheral nuclear collisions. The possibility to explore particle–particle correlations are also discussed.

Abstract: The reaction $^{12}\mathrm{C}+^{13}\mathrm{C}$ at $95\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}\mathrm{MeV}$ bombarding energy is studied using the Garfield + Ring Counter apparatus located at the INFN Laboratori Nazionali di Legnaro. In this paper we want to investigate the de-excitation of $^{25}\mathrm{Mg}$ aiming both at a new stringent test of the statistical description of nuclear decay and a direct comparison with the decay of the system $^{24}\mathrm{Mg}$ formed through $^{12}\mathrm{C}+^{12}\mathrm{C}$ reactions previously studied. Thanks to the large acceptance of the detector and to its good fragment identification capabilities, we could apply stringent selections on fusion-evaporation events, requiring their completeness in charge. The main decay features of the evaporation residues and of the emitted light particles are overall well described by a pure statistical model; however, as for the case of the previously studied $^{24}\mathrm{Mg}$, we observed some deviations in the branching ratios, in particular for those chains involving only the evaporation of $\ensuremath{\alpha}$ particles. From this point of view the behavior of the $^{24}\mathrm{Mg}$ and $^{25}\mathrm{Mg}$ decay cases appear to be rather similar. An attempt to obtain a full mass balance even without neutron detection is also discussed.

Abstract: The work describes the development of a new class of liquid scintillators based on polysiloxane liquid compounds. These materials are characterized by low toxicity, chemical inertness, very low volatility and low flammability, allowing their use without concerns even at high temperatures in vacuum. In this view different polysiloxane based liquids have been tested, with variable content and distribution of phenyl lateral substituents and added with suitable dyes, namely 2,5-diphenyloxazole (PPO) and Lumogen Violet (LV). Absorption and fluorescence spectroscopy have been used in order to study the emission feature of the various compounds and to investigate the spectral matching between siloxane solvents and dissolved primary dyes. Scintillation efficiency towards 60Co and 137Cs gamma rays, relative to commercial liquid scintillator (EJ-309), has been measured and the results have been related to the energy transfer and energy migration mechanism from monomer and excimer forming sites in liquid siloxanes.

Abstract: The goal of the FAZIA Collaboration is the design of a new-generation 4π detector array for heavy-ion collisions with radioactive beams. This article summarizes the main results of the R&D phase, devoted to the search for significant improvements of the techniques for charge and mass identification of reaction products. This was obtained by means of a systematic study of the basic detection module, consisting of two transmission-mounted silicon detectors followed by a CsI(Tl) scintillator. Significant improvements in ΔE-E and pulse-shape techniques were obtained by controlling the doping homogeneity and the cutting angles of silicon and by putting severe constraints on thickness uniformity. Purposely designed digital electronics contributed to identification quality. The issue of possible degradation related to radiation damage of silicon was also addressed. The experimental activity was accompanied by studies on the physics governing signal evolution in silicon. The good identification quality obtained with the prototypes during the R&D phase, allowed us to investigate also some aspects of isospin physics, namely isospin transport and odd-even staggering. Now, after the conclusion of the R&D period, the FAZIA Collaboration has entered the demonstrator phase, with the aim of verifying the applicability of the devised solutions for the realization of a larger-scale experimental set-up.

Abstract: International audience; The NUCL-EX collaboration is carrying out an extensive research program on preequilibrium emission of light charged particles from hot nuclei. The ultimate goal is to study how cluster structures affect nuclear reactions [1,2,3,4]. Indeed, a strong correlation between nuclear structure and reaction dynamics emerges when some nucleons or clusters of nucleons are emitted or captured [5]. At this purpose, the four reactions 16O+30Si, 16O+30Si, 18O+28Si and 19F +27Al have been measured at about 120 MeV projectile energy. Experimental data were collected at Legnaro National Laboratories, using the GARFIELD+RCo array, fully equipped with digital electronics [6]. Following an initial identification of particles and the energy calibration procedures, the complete analysis is being performed on an event-by-event basis. Experimental data are then compared to the theoretical predictions where events are generated by numerical codes based on pre-equilibrium and statistical models and then filtered through a software replica of the setup. Differences between the experimental data and the predicted data put into evidence effects related to the entrance channel and to the cluster nature of the colliding ions. After a general introduction on the experimental campaign, this contribution will focus on the preliminary results obtained so far.

Abstract: The study of nuclear cluster states bound by valence neutrons is a field of recent large interest. In particular, it is interesting to study the pre-formation of α-clusters in α-conjugate nuclei and the dynamical condensation of clusters during nuclear reactions. The NUCL-EX collaboration (INFN, Italy) is carrying out a research campaign studying preequilibrium emission of light charged particles and cluster properties of light and medium mass nuclei. For this purpose, a comparative study of the three nuclear reactions: O 16 + Si 30 , O 18 + Si 28 and F 19 + 27Al, has been recently carried out using the GARFIELD+RCo 4π setup. After a general introduction on the experimental campaign, the preliminary results for the three systems are presented.

Abstract: International audience; The study of nuclear cluster states bound by valence neutrons is a field of recent large interest. In particular, it is important to study the pre-formation of α-clusters in α-conjugate nuclei and the dynamical condensation of clusters during nuclear reactions [1–5]. The NUCL–EX collaboration has recently initiated an experimental campaign of exclusive measurements of fusion–evaporation reactions with light nuclei as interacting partners. In collisions involving light systems, the low expected multiplicity of fragments increases the probability of achieving a quasi-complete reconstruction of the event. In particular the formation and decay modes of an excited 24Mg system have been studied through two different reactions, 12C (95 MeV)+ 12C and 14N (80.7 MeV)+ 10B, which have been used to produce fused systems with nearly the same mass and excitation energy (~60 MeV). In particular, even the de-excitation of the Hoyle state in 12C have been studied, both in peripheral (projectiles de-excitation) and in central collisions (six α-particles channel). Moreover, a research campaign studying pre-equilibrium emission of light charged particles and cluster properties of light and medium-mass nuclei has been carried out. For this purpose, a comparative study of the three nuclear systems 18O+28Si, 16O+30Si and 19F+27Al has been recently studied using the GARFIELD+RCo 4π setup [6]. The experimental data are compared with the predictions of simulated events generated with the statistical models (GEMINI++ and HFl) and through dynamical models like Stochastic Mean Field (SMF) and Antisymmetrized Molecular Dynamics (AMD) and filtered with a software replica of our apparatus in order to take into account the experimental conditions.

Abstract: International audience; Clustering structural properties in medium-mass systems have been investigated studying the competition between the evaporation and pre-equilibrium particle emission in central collisions. At variance with light nuclei, in the case of heavier nuclei there are no experimental evidences of such structure effects, since the determination of pre-formed clusters within nuclear matter is less obvious.The two systems 16O + 65Cu and 19F + 62Ni, leading to the same compound system 81Rb*, have been studied at the same beam velocity (16 AMeV). The experiments have been performed using the GARFIELD + RCo multi-detection system at the Legnaro National Laboratories.Recent results of the data analysis and of the comparison of the experimental data with different statistical and dynamical model calculations are reported in this contribution.

Abstract: A new technique of large-area thin ion implanted silicon detectors has been developed within the R&D performed by the FAZIA Collaboration. The essence of the technique is the application of a low-temperature baking process instead of high-temperature annealing. This thermal treatment is performed after B+ ion implantation and Al evaporation of detector contacts, made by using a single adjusted Al mask. Extremely thin silicon pads can be therefore obtained. The thickness distribution along the X and Y directions was measured for a prototype chip by the energy loss of α-particles from 241Am (〈E α 〉 = 5.5 MeV). Preliminary tests on the first thin detector (area ≈ 20 × 20 mm2) were performed at the INFN-LNS cyclotron in Catania (Italy) using products emitted in the heavy-ion reaction 84Kr (E = 35 A MeV) + 112Sn. The ΔE − E ion identification plot was obtained using a telescope consisting of our thin ΔE detector (21 μm thick) followed by a typical FAZIA 510 μm E detector of the same active area. The charge distribution of measured ions is presented together with a quantitative evaluation of the quality of the Z resolution. The threshold is lower than 2 A MeV depending on the ion charge.

Abstract: A 4pi light charged particle spectrometer, named 8pLP, is in operation at the Laboratori Nazionali di Legnaro (Italy) for the study of the reaction mechanisms produced in low-energy heavy-ion reactions. The spectrometer has recently been used in a study of fission dynamics that involves the detection of light charged particles in the fission and evaporation residue channel in a system of intermediate fissility, as well as in a study of multinucleon transfer to heavy target. Data on the system 240 MeV S-32 + Mo-100 are presented. Dynamical effects extracted as a consequence of the comparison of the data to the statistical model calculations are discussed.

Abstract: Light particles in coincidence with evaporation residues and heavy fragments have been measured by a 4pi charged-particle detector at the INFN Laboratori Nazionali di Legnaro (Padua) for the 240 MeV S-32+Mo-100 reaction leading to the Ce-132 composite system at 152 MeV of excitation energy. Energy spectra of the alpha-particles in coincidence with fission fragments were extracted for many correlation angles both in plane and out of plane. A prominent out-of-plane emission was observed, consistent with the pattern for the near-scission emission. From the fit to the spectra, the pre-scission alpha-particle multiplicity of 0.040 +/- 0.006 was obtained. This value is reproduced by the code PACE2 without the inclusion of a delay time for fission. The presence of fast fission, which could be responsible for this result, is discussed.

Abstract: The response of silicon-silicon-CsI(Tl) telescopes, developed within the FAZIA collaboration, to fragments produced in nuclear reactions 84 Krþ 120-124 Sn at 35 A MeV, has been used to study ion identification methods. Two techniques are considered for the identification of the nuclear products in the silicon stages. The standard DEE one requires signals induced in two detection layers by ions punching through the first one. Conversely, the digital Pulse Shape Analysis (PSA) allows the identification of ions stopped in the first silicon layer. The capabilities of these two identification methods have been compared for different mountings of the silicons, i.e. rear (particles entering through the low electric field side) or front (particles entering through the high electric field side) side injection. The DEE identification method gives exactly the same results in both configurations. At variance, the pulse shape discrimination is very sensitive to the detector mounting. In case of rear side injection, the identification with the ''energy vs. charge rise time'' PSA method presents energy thresholds which are significantly lower than in the case of front side injection. & 2012 Elsevier B.V.
