Abstract

The Tarantula Nebula in the Large Magellanic Cloud is known for its high star formation activity. At its center lies the young massive star cluster R136, providing a significant amount of the energy that makes the nebula shine so brightly at many wavelengths. Recently, young massive star clusters have been suggested to also efficiently produce very high-energy cosmic rays, potentially beyond PeV energies. Here, we report the detection of very-high-energy γ -ray emission from the direction of R136 with the High Energy Stereoscopic System, achieved through a multicomponent, likelihood-based modeling of the data. This supports the hypothesis that R136 is indeed a very powerful cosmic-ray accelerator. Moreover, from the same analysis, we provide an updated measurement of the γ -ray emission from 30 Dor C, the only superbubble detected at TeV energies presently. The γ -ray luminosity above 0.5 TeV of both sources is (2–3) × 10 ^35 erg s ^−1 . This exceeds by more than a factor of 2 the luminosity of HESS J1646−458, which is associated with the most massive young star cluster in the Milky Way, Westerlund 1. Furthermore, the γ -ray emission from each source is extended with a significance of >3 σ and a Gaussian width of about 30 pc. For 30 Dor C, a connection between the γ -ray emission and the nonthermal X-ray emission appears likely. Different interpretations of the γ -ray signal from R136 are discussed.

Abstract

In 2021 July, PKS 1510−089 exhibited a significant flux drop in the high-energy γ -ray (by a factor 10) and optical (by a factor 5) bands and remained in this low state throughout 2022. Similarly, the optical polarization in the source vanished, resulting in the optical spectrum being fully explained through the steady flux of the accretion disk and the broad-line region. Unlike the aforementioned bands, the very-high-energy γ -ray and X-ray fluxes did not exhibit a significant flux drop from year to year. This suggests that the steady-state very-high-energy γ -ray and X-ray fluxes originate from a different emission region than the vanished parts of the high-energy γ -ray and optical jet fluxes. The latter component has disappeared through either a swing of the jet away from the line of sight or a significant drop in the photon production efficiency of the jet close to the black hole. Either change could become visible in high-resolution radio images.

Abstract

Magnetic fields in galaxies and galaxy clusters are believed to be the result of the amplification of intergalactic seed fields during the formation of large-scale structures in the universe. However, the origin, strength, and morphology of this intergalactic magnetic field (IGMF) remain unknown. Lower limits on (or indirect detection of) the IGMF can be obtained from observations of high-energy gamma rays from distant blazars. Gamma rays interact with the extragalactic background light to produce electron−positron pairs, which can subsequently initiate electromagnetic cascades. The gamma-ray signature of the cascade depends on the IGMF since it deflects the pairs. Here we report on a new search for this cascade emission using a combined data set from the Fermi Large Area Telescope and the High Energy Stereoscopic System. Using state-of-the-art Monte Carlo predictions for the cascade signal, our results place a lower limit on the IGMF of B > 7.1 × 10 ^−16 G for a coherence length of 1 Mpc even when blazar duty cycles as short as 10 yr are assumed. This improves on previous lower limits by a factor of 2. For longer duty cycles of 10 ^4 (10 ^7 ) yr, IGMF strengths below 1.8 × 10 ^−14 G (3.9 × 10 ^−14 G) are excluded, which rules out specific models for IGMF generation in the early universe.

Abstract

GRB 221009A is the brightest gamma-ray burst (GRB) ever detected. To probe the very-high-energy (VHE; >100 GeV) emission, the High Energy Stereoscopic System (H.E.S.S.) began observations 53 hr after the triggering event, when the brightness of the moonlight no longer precluded observations. We derive differential and integral upper limits using H.E.S.S. data from the third, fourth, and ninth nights after the initial GRB detection, after applying atmospheric corrections. The combined observations yield an integral energy flux upper limit of ${{\rm{\Phi }}}_{\mathrm{UL}}^{95 \% }=9.7\times {10}^{-12}\,\mathrm{erg}\,{\mathrm{cm}}^{-2}\,{{\rm{s}}}^{-1}$ above E _thr = 650 GeV. The constraints derived from the H.E.S.S. observations complement the available multiwavelength data. The radio to X-ray data are consistent with synchrotron emission from a single electron population, with the peak in the spectral energy distribution occurring above the X-ray band. Compared to the VHE-bright GRB 190829A, the upper limits for GRB 221009A imply a smaller gamma-ray to X-ray flux ratio in the afterglow. Even in the absence of a detection, the H.E.S.S. upper limits thus contribute to the multiwavelength picture of GRB 221009A, effectively ruling out an IC-dominated scenario.

Abstract

We report on multiwavelength target-of-opportunity observations of the blazar PKS 0735+178, located 2.°2 away from the best-fit position of the IceCube neutrino event IceCube-211208A detected on 2021 December 8. The source was in a high-flux state in the optical, ultraviolet, X-ray, and GeV γ -ray bands around the time of the neutrino event, exhibiting daily variability in the soft X-ray flux. The X-ray data from Swift-XRT and NuSTAR characterize the transition between the low-energy and high-energy components of the broadband spectral energy distribution (SED), and the γ -ray data from Fermi-LAT, VERITAS, and H.E.S.S. require a spectral cutoff near 100 GeV. Both the X-ray and γ -ray measurements provide strong constraints on the leptonic and hadronic models. We analytically explore a synchrotron self-Compton model, an external Compton model, and a lepto-hadronic model. Models that are entirely based on internal photon fields face serious difficulties in matching the observed SED. The existence of an external photon field in the source would instead explain the observed γ -ray spectral cutoff in both the leptonic and lepto-hadronic models and allow a proton jet power that marginally agrees with the Eddington limit in the lepto-hadronic model. We show a numerical lepto-hadronic model with external target photons that reproduces the observed SED and is reasonably consistent with the neutrino event despite requiring a high jet power.

Abstract

We study the broadband emission of Mrk 501 using multiwavelength observations from 2017 to 2020 performed with a multitude of instruments, involving, among others, MAGIC, Fermi's Large Area Telescope (LAT), NuSTAR, Swift, GASP-WEBT, and the Owens Valley Radio Observatory. Mrk 501 showed an extremely low broadband activity, which may help to unravel its baseline emission. Nonetheless, significant flux variations are detected at all wave bands, with the highest occurring at X-rays and very-high-energy (VHE) γ -rays. A significant correlation (>3 σ ) between X-rays and VHE γ -rays is measured, supporting leptonic scenarios to explain the variable parts of the emission, also during low activity. This is further supported when we extend our data from 2008 to 2020, and identify, for the first time, significant correlations between the Swift X-Ray Telescope and Fermi-LAT. We additionally find correlations between high-energy γ -rays and radio, with the radio lagging by more than 100 days, placing the γ -ray emission zone upstream of the radio-bright regions in the jet. Furthermore, Mrk 501 showed a historically low activity in X-rays and VHE γ -rays from mid-2017 to mid-2019 with a stable VHE flux (>0.2 TeV) of 5% the emission of the Crab Nebula. The broadband spectral energy distribution (SED) of this 2 yr long low state, the potential baseline emission of Mrk 501, can be characterized with one-zone leptonic models, and with (lepto)-hadronic models fulfilling neutrino flux constraints from IceCube. We explore the time evolution of the SED toward the low state, revealing that the stable baseline emission may be ascribed to a standing shock, and the variable emission to an additional expanding or traveling shock.

Abstract

We report a characterization of the multiband flux variability and correlations of the nearby (z=0.031) blazar Markarian 421(Mrk 421) using data from Mets ̈ahovi, Swift, Fermi-LAT, MAGIC, FACT, and other collaborations and instruments from 2014November till 2016 June. Mrk 421 did not show any prominent flaring activity, but exhibited periods of historically low activity above 1 TeV (F>1TeV<1.7×10−12ph cm−2s−1) and in the 2–10 keV (X-ray) band (F2−10 keV<3.6×10−11erg cm−2s−1),during which the Swift-BAT data suggest an additional spectral component beyond the regular synchrotron emission. The highest flux variability occurs in X-rays and very high-energy (E>0.1 TeV)γ-rays, which, despite the low activity, show a significant positive correlation with no time lag. The HRkeV and HRTeV show the harder-when-brighter trend observed in many blazars, but the trend flattens at the highest fluxes, which suggests a change in the processes dominating the blazar variability. Enlarging our dataset with data from years 2007 to 2014, we measured a positive correlation between the optical and the GeV emission over a range of about 60 d centred at time lag zero, and a positive correlation between the optical/GeV and the radio emission over a range of about 60 d centred at a time lag of 43+9−6d. This observation is consistent with the radio-bright zone being located about 0.2 parsec downstream from the optical/GeV emission regions of the jet. The flux distributions are better described with a lognormal function in most of the energy bands probed, indicating that the variability in Mrk 421 is likely produced by a multiplicative process.

Abstract

Monthly notices of the Royal Astronomical Society 515(1), 1365 - 1379 (2022). doi:10.1093/mnras/stac1601, We report on a search for persistent radio emission from the one-off fast radio burst (FRB) 20190714A, as well as from two repeating FRBs, 20190711A and 20171019A, using the MeerKAT radio telescope. For FRB 20171019A, we also conducted simultaneous observations with the High-Energy Stereoscopic System (H.E.S.S.) in very high-energy gamma rays and searched for signals in the ultraviolet, optical, and X-ray bands. For this FRB, we obtain a UV flux upper limit of |$1.39 \times 10^{-16}~{\rm erg\, cm^{-2}\, s^{-1}}$|Å^−1, X-ray limit of |$\sim 6.6 \times 10^{-14}~{\rm erg\, cm^{-2}\, s^{-1}}$| and a limit on the very high energy gamma-ray flux |$\Phi (E\gt 120\, {\rm GeV}) \lt 1.7\times 10^{-12}\, \mathrm{erg\, cm^{-2}\, s^{-1}}$|⁠. We obtain a radio upper limit of ∼15 |$\mu$|Jy beam^−1 for persistent emission at the locations of both FRBs 20190711A and 20171019A with MeerKAT. However, we detected an almost unresolved (ratio of integrated flux to peak flux is ∼1.7 beam) radio emission, where the synthesized beam size was ∼ 8 arcsec size with a peak brightness of |$\sim 53\, \mu$|Jy beam^−1 at MeerKAT and |$\sim 86\, \mu$|Jy beam^−1 at e-MERLIN, possibly associated with FRB 20190714A at z = 0.2365. This represents the first detection of persistent continuum radio emission potentially associated with a (as-yet) non-repeating FRB. If the association is confirmed, one of the strongest remaining distinction between repeaters and non-repeaters would no longer be applicable. Abstract

A deep survey of the Large Magellanic Cloud at ~0.1-100TeV photon energies with the Cherenkov Telescope Array is planned. We assess the detection prospects based on a model for the emission of the galaxy, comprising the four known TeV emitters, mock populations of sources, and interstellar emission on galactic scales. We also assess the detectability of 30 Doradus and SN 1987A, and the constraints that can be derived on the nature of dark matter. The survey will allow for fine spectral studies of N157B, N132D, LMC P3, and 30 Doradus C, and half a dozen other sources should be revealed, mainly pulsar-powered objects. The remnant from SN 1987A could be detected if it produces cosmic-ray nuclei with a flat power-law spectrum at high energies, or with a steeper index 2.3-2.4 pending a flux increase by a factor >3-4 over ~2015-2035. Large-scale interstellar emission remains mostly out of reach of the survey if its >10GeV spectrum has a soft photon index ~2.7, but degree-scale 0.1-10TeV pion-decay emission could be detected if the cosmic-ray spectrum hardens above >100GeV. The 30 Doradus star-forming region is detectable if acceleration efficiency is on the order of 1-10% of the mechanical luminosity and diffusion is suppressed by two orders of magnitude within, Accepted for publication in MNRAS. Abstract

Purple non-sulphur bacteria (PNSB) are an emerging group of microbes attractive for applied microbiology applications such as wastewater treatment, plant biostimulants, microbial protein, polyhydroxyalkanoates and H2 production. These photoorganoheterotrophic microbes have the unique ability to grow selectively on organic carbon in anaerobic photobioreactors. This so-called selectivity implies that the microbial community will have a low diversity and a high abundance of a particular PNSB species. Recently, it has been shown that certain PNSB strains can produce antimicrobials, yet it remains unclear whether these contribute to competitive inhibition. This research aimed to understand which type of antimicrobial PNSB produce and identify whether these compounds contribute to their selective growth. Mining 166 publicly-available PNSB genomes using the computational tool BAGEL showed that 59% contained antimicrobial encoding regions, more specifically biosynthetic clusters of bacteriocins and non-ribosomal peptide synthetases. Inter- and intra-species inhibition was observed in agar spot assays for Rhodobacter blasticus EBR2 and Rhodopseudomonas palustris EBE1 with inhibition zones of, respectively, 5.1 and 1.5–5.7 mm. Peptidomic analysis detected a peptide fragment in the supernatant (SVLQLLR) that had a 100% percentage identity match with a known non-ribosomal peptide synthetase with antimicrobial activity.

Abstract

Very-high Energy (VHE) gamma-ray astroparticle physics is a relatively young field, and observations over the past decade have surprisingly revealed almost two hundred VHE emitters which appear to act as cosmic particle accelerators. These sources are an important component of the Universe, influencing the evolution of stars and galaxies. At the same time, they also act as a probe of physics in the most extreme environments known - such as in supernova explosions, and around or after the merging of black holes and neutron stars. However, the existing experiments have provided exciting glimpses, but often falling short of supplying the full answer. A deeper understanding of the TeV sky requires a significant improvement in sensitivity at TeV energies, a wider energy coverage from tens of GeV to hundreds of TeV and a much better angular and energy resolution with respect to the currently running facilities. The next generation gamma-ray observatory, the Cherenkov Telescope Array Observatory (CTAO), is the answer to this need. In this talk I will present this upcoming observatory from its design to the construction, and its potential science exploitation. CTAO will allow the entire astronomical community to explore a new discovery space that will likely lead to paradigm-changing breakthroughs. In particular, CTA has an unprecedented sensitivity to short (sub-minute) timescale phenomena, placing it as a key instrument in the future of multi-messenger and multi-wavelength time domain astronomy. Abstract

Errata, The paper ‘Lepto-hadronic single-zone models for the electromagnetic and neutrino emission of TXS 0506+056’ (Cerruti et al. 2019) was published in MNRAS, 483, L12. Afterwards, we became aware of three errors in our numerical calculations. When corrected, the ratio of the emissivity in neutrinos to that in hadronic gamma-rays is modified. We obtained updated model solutions that reproduce the flare of TXS 0506+056observed in 2017. These do not differ qualitatively from the published ones, and the main conclusions of the paper remain valid. However, the estimated neutrino rate was overpredicted., M. Abstract

Gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) are brief flashes of gamma rays, considered to be the most energetic explosive phenomena in the Universe. The emission from GRBs comprises a short (typically tens of seconds) and bright prompt emission, followed by a much longer afterglow phase. During the afterglow phase, the shocked outflow -- produced by the interaction between the ejected matter and the circumburst medium -- slows down, and a gradual decrease in brightness is observed. GRBs typically emit most of their energy via gamma-rays with energies in the kiloelectronvolt-to-megaelectronvolt range, but a few photons with energies of tens of gigaelectronvolts have been detected by space-based instruments. However, the origins of such high-energy (above one gigaelectronvolt) photons and the presence of very-high-energy (more than 100 gigaelectronvolts) emission have remained elussive. Here we report observations of very-high-energy emission in the bright GRB 180720B deep in the GRB afterglow -ten hours after the end of the prompt emission phase, when the X-ray flux had already decayed by four orders of magnitude. Two possible explanations exist for the observed radiation: inverse Compton emission and synchrotron emission of ultrarelativistic electrons. Our observations show that the energy fluxes in the X-ray and gamma-ray range and their photon indices remain comparable to each other throughout the afterglow. This discovery places distinct constraints on the GRB environment for both emission mechanisms, with the inverse Compton explanation alleviating the particle energy requirements for the emission observed at late times. Abstract

Roll stabilization systems are used today not only on most passengers ships, to ensure comfort to embarked passengers and crew; these systems are becoming essential also on naval ship to ensure the effectiveness of systems and to extend the operability range of the ship. This paper presents the studies which led to the development of rudder roll system for new Italian Navy ships. The studies here described have covered all aspects of the system: the rudder configuration optimization, the control law development, the evaluation of hydrodynamic performances and also all mechanical aspects, in terms of fatigue life and shock resistance, have been taken in due account. The development and evaluation of the system has been realized not only by means of calculations but also with dedicated campaign of numerical simulations, tunnel test and seakeeping basin tests: the main results are here after described.

17. Transcranial Doppler Assessment of Workload Transition in a Complex Task

Abstract

Previous research has demonstrated that the level of performance achieved for a given workload level is affected not only on task demands and individual differences, but also by sequential effects of prior workload. The majority of this research has been done with vigilance-type tasks, wherein performance is an intermittent response to critical signals. Workload is then varied either by adjusting the signal rate or adding a secondary task. This study sought to demonstrate that workload can be assessed with Transcranial Doppler (TCD) in addition to performance and other physiological measures, and that workload transition results generalize to more complex tasks. TCD and electrocardiographic (ECG) data were collected while participants performed the Multi-Attribute Task Battery (MATB, Comstock & Arnegard, 1992). Two levels of workload were individually defined based on performance via a pretest calibration procedure; one level was relatively easy with a mean composite TLX score of 23 and the other relatively difficult with a mean composite TLX score of 63. These two levels were run in isolation and in transition runs that switched from one to the other halfway through. TCD and ECG revealed that both blood flow velocity and heart rate increased with increasing task difficulty, while the transition in task difficulty produced nonsignifcantly lower performance than runs of consistent difficulty. The physiological data provides evidence that additional physical resources are demanded and consumed in response to the change in task difficulty, while performance data collected to date has not revealed transition effects in the complex task.

Abstract

The development of a capture step of a human recombinant F(ab′)2 produced and expressed in baculovirus-infected cells was investigated by screening three mixed-mode chromatography sorbents (HEA HyperCel™, PPA HyperCel and MEP HyperCel) and two ion exchangers (Q Ceramic HyperD® F, S Ceramic HyperD F) sorbents using a 96-well plate format and SELDI-MS. HEA HyperCel gave the best separation performance therefore the conditions tested in micro-plate were transferred to laboratory scale chromatographic experiments, confirming that the recombinant F(ab′)2 was effectively captured on the mixed-mode sorbent without any pre-treatment of the crude extract with a 82% recovery and a 39-fold purification.

Abstract

Active Galactic Nuclei (hereafter AGN) produce powerful outflows which offer excellent conditions for efficient particle acceleration in internal and external shocks, turbulence, and magnetic reconnection events. The jets as well as particle accelerating regions close to the supermassive black holes (hereafter SMBH) at the intersection of plasma inflows and outflows, can produce readily detectable very high energy gamma-ray emission. As of now, more than 45 AGN including 41 blazars and 4 radiogalaxies have been detected by the present ground-based gamma-ray telescopes, which represents more than one third of the cosmic sources detected so far in the VHE gamma-ray regime. The future Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) should boost the sample of AGN detected in the VHE range by about one order of magnitude, shedding new light on AGN population studies, and AGN classification and unification schemes. CTA will be a unique tool to scrutinize the extreme high-energy tail of accelerated particles in SMBH environments, to revisit the central engines and their associated relativistic jets, and to study the particle acceleration and emission mechanisms, particularly exploring the missing link between accretion physics, SMBH magnetospheres and jet formation. Monitoring of distant AGN will be an extremely rewarding observing program which will inform us about the inner workings and evolution of AGN. Furthermore these AGN are bright beacons of gamma-rays which will allow us to constrain the extragalactic infrared and optical backgrounds as well as the intergalactic magnetic field, and will enable tests of quantum gravity and other "exotic" phenomena., 28 pages, 23 figures

Abstract

Mrk 501 is one of the brightest blazars at TeV energies and has been extensively studied since its first VHE detection in 1996. Our goal is to characterize in detail the source gamma-ray emission, together with the radio-to-X-ray emission, during the non-flaring (low) activity, which is less often studied than the occasional flaring (high) activity. We organized a multiwavelength (MW) campaign on Mrk 501 between March and May 2008. This multi-instrument effort included the most sensitive VHE gamma-ray instruments in the northern hemisphere, namely the imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes MAGIC and VERITAS, as well as Swift, RXTE, the F-GAMMA, GASP-WEBT, and other collaborations and instruments. Mrk 501 was found to be in a low state of activity during the campaign, with a VHE flux in the range of 10%-20% of the Crab nebula flux. Nevertheless, significant flux variations were detected with various instruments, with a trend of increasing variability with energy. The broadband spectral energy distribution during the two different emission states of the campaign can be adequately described within the homogeneous one-zone synchrotron self-Compton model, with the (slightly) higher state described by an increase in the electron number density. This agrees with previous studies of the broadband emission of this source during flaring and non-flaring states. We report for the first time a tentative X-ray-to-VHE correlation during a low VHE activity. Although marginally significant, this positive correlation between X-ray and VHE, which has been reported many times during flaring activity, suggests that the mechanisms that dominate the X-ray/VHE emission during non-flaring-activity are not substantially different from those that are responsible for the emission during flaring activity., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A

Abstract

We performed a 4.5-month multi-instrument campaign (from radio to VHE gamma rays) on Mrk421 between January 2009 and June 2009, which included VLBA, F-GAMMA, GASP-WEBT, Swift, RXTE, Fermi-LAT, MAGIC, and Whipple, among other instruments and collaborations. Mrk421 was found in its typical (non-flaring) activity state, with a VHE flux of about half that of the Crab Nebula, yet the light curves show significant variability at all wavelengths, the highest variability being in the X-rays. We determined the power spectral densities (PSD) at most wavelengths and found that all PSDs can be described by power-laws without a break, and with indices consistent with pink/red-noise behavior. We observed a harder-when-brighter behavior in the X-ray spectra and measured a positive correlation between VHE and X-ray fluxes with zero time lag. Such characteristics have been reported many times during flaring activity, but here they are reported for the first time in the non-flaring state. We also observed an overall anti-correlation between optical/UV and X-rays extending over the duration of the campaign. The harder-when-brighter behavior in the X-ray spectra and the measured positive X-ray/VHE correlation during the 2009 multi-wavelength campaign suggests that the physical processes dominating the emission during non-flaring states have similarities with those occurring during flaring activity. In particular, this observation supports leptonic scenarios as being responsible for the emission of Mrk421 during non-flaring activity. Such a temporally extended X-ray/VHE correlation is not driven by any single flaring event, and hence is difficult to explain within the standard hadronic scenarios. The highest variability is observed in the X-ray band, which, within the one-zone synchrotron self-Compton scenario, indicates that the electron energy distribution is most variable at the highest energies., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A, 18 pages, 14 figures (v2 has a small modification in the acknowledgments, and also corrects a typo in the field "author" in the metadata)

Abstract

Located between the on-detector front-end electronics and the global data acquisition system (DAQ), the off-detector electronics of the CMS electromagnetic calorimeter (ECAL) is involved in both detector readout and trigger system. Working at 40 MHz, the trigger part must, within ten clock cycles, receive and deserialize the data of the front-end electronics, encode the trigger primitives using a nonlinear scale, assure time alignment between channels using a histogramming technique and send the trigger primitives to the regional trigger. In addition, it must classify trigger towers in three classes of interest and send this classification to the readout part. The readout part must select the zero suppression level to be applied depending on the regions of interest determined from the trigger tower classification, deserialize front-end data coming from high-speed (800 Mb/s) serial links, check their integrity, apply zero suppression, build the event and send it to the DAQ, monitor the buffer occupancy and send back pressure to the trigger system when required, provide data spying and monitoring facilities for the local DAQ. The system, and especially the data link speed, the latency constraints and the bit-error rate requirements have been validated on prototypes. Part of the system is about to go to production.

Abstract

Culturally competent strategies are necessary as populations in many countries become increasingly diverse. In the United States, Latinos are the fastest-growing minority group. In this study, the authors interviewed Latino patients and families, collected demographics from 570 patients in pediatric orthopedic practices in California, and conducted population census and literature reviews. Based on these sources of information, the authors identified barriers to health care for Latino pediatric orthopedic patients and propose culturally competent strategies to overcome these barriers. This approach can be applied to other populations so that culturally competent care is available to patients from all ethnic, racial, and cultural backgrounds.

Abstract

Very high-energy gamma-ray emission from PKS 0447-439 was detected with the H.E.S.S. Cherenkov telescope array in December 2009. This blazar is one of the brightest extragalactic objects in the Fermi Bright Source List and has a hard spectrum in the MeV to GeV range. In the TeV range, a photon index of 3.89 +- 0.37 (stat) +- 0.22 (sys) and a flux normalisation at 1 TeV, Phi(1 TeV) = (3.5 +- 1.1 (stat) +- 0.9 (sys)) x 10^{-13} cm^{-2} s^{-1} TeV^{-1}, were found. The detection with H.E.S.S. triggered observations in the X-ray band with the Swift and RXTE telescopes. Simultaneous UV and optical data from Swift UVOT and data from the optical telescopes ATOM and ROTSE are also available. The spectrum and light curve measured with H.E.S.S. are presented and compared to the multi-wavelength data at lower energies. A rapid flare is seen in the Swift XRT and RXTE data, together with a flux variation in the UV band, at a time scale of the order of one day. A firm upper limit of z < 0.59 on the redshift of PKS 0447-439 is derived from the combined Fermi-LAT and H.E.S.S. data, given the assumptions that there is no upturn in the intrinsic spectrum above the Fermi-LAT energy range and that absorption on the Extragalactic Background Light (EBL) is not weaker than the lower limit provided by current models. Abstract

International audience; The observed spectra of very-high-energy (VHE) blazars may be deformed by gamma-gamma absorption onto the Extra-galactic Background Light (EBL) or, more speculatively, by photon-axion oscillations. As the resulting imprint on observed spectral characteristics may be redshift-dependent, it is important to enrich the catalogue of VHE high-redshift blazars. HESS-II [1], with its lowenergy threshold and enhanced E > 100 GeV sensitivity, will be a major instrument in this field of study. While awaiting this new phase of the experiment, H.E.S.S. observed the very distant BL Lac KUV00311-1938 in a multi-year campaign, leading to the discovery of its VHE gamma-ray emission with a significance of 5.1 standard deviations. The detection of this source has been possible thanks to an enhanced low-energy sensitivity of recent-developed analysis techniques for IACTs (Paris-MVA) and a full refurbishment which markedly lowered the overall analysis threshold. The evaluation of the redshift of this source is difficult, due to the weakness of the absorption lines in the optical spectrum. A first attempt to evaluate this redshift was performed by [2], and [3], where a value of 0.61 was quoted with a question mark. More recently, [4] used the data from the X-Shooter spectrograph operating on the VLT to estimate a solid lower limit on the redshift of the source of z > 0.506, confirming that KUV00311-1938 is the farthest BL Lac ever detected at VHE.

Abstract

SUMMARY Pemphigus foliaceus is an autoimmune blistering skin disease mediated by autoantibodies directed against desmoglein 1 and occurs as a sporadic form throughout the world, or as an endemic form called fogo selvagem in Brazil. Healthy subjects living in Brazilian endemic areas produce antidesmoglein 1 antibodies, suggesting the role of environmental factors in the initiation of the autoimmune response. Tunisia was described recently as an endemic area where the disease is characterized by its high rate among young people, especially women. An enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay using recombinant desmoglein 1 as antigen was used to detect antibodies against desmoglein 1 and calibrated with sera from 67 French healthy blood donors, 20 French pemphigus foliaceus patients and patients with other bullous skin diseases. When sera from 179 healthy Tunisian blood donors were tested, 31 (17%) were found positive. The desmoglein 1 binding activity of these 31 sera was confirmed in 10 cases by indirect immunofluorescence analysis and/or immunoblotting using human epidermal extract. Subclass analysis of antidesmoglein 1 antibodies showed that they were almost exclusively of the IgG2 subclass in positive normal sera and of IgG4 subclass in patients with PF. Thus, antibodies against desmoglein 1 are prevalent in normal subjects living in Tunisia which, along with their IgG2 isotype, suggests the role of the environment in the pathogenesis of this endemic type of pemphigus foliaceus and the need for additional factors to switch from a subclinical to a clinical form of the disease.

Abstract

Culturally competent strategies are necessary as populations in many countries become increasingly diverse. In the United States, Latinos are the fastest-growing minority group. In this study, the authors interviewed Latino patients and families, collected demographics from 570 patients in pediatric orthopedic practices in California, and conducted population census and literature reviews. Based on these sources of information, the authors identified barriers to health care for Latino pediatric orthopedic patients and propose culturally competent strategies to overcome these barriers. This approach can be applied to other populations so that culturally competent care is available to patients from all ethnic, racial, and cultural backgrounds.

Abstract

A systematic exploration of the V(H)2/V(kappa)12-13 variable domains of the anti-CD4 monoclonal antibody (mAb) 13B8.2 was performed by the Spot method to screen for paratope-derived peptides (PDPs) demonstrating CD4 binding ability. Nine peptides, named CB1 to CB9, were identified, synthesized in a cyclic and soluble form and tested for binding to recombinant soluble CD4. Among them, CB1, CB2 and CB8 showed high anti-CD4 activity. Competition studies for CD4 binding indicated that PDPs CB1, CB8, and the parental mAb 13B8.2 recognized the same complementarity determining region (CDR)3-like loop region. PDP CB1 was shown to mimic the biological properties of 13B8.2 mAb in two independent cellular assays, demonstrating inhibitory activities in the micromolar range on antigen presentation and human immunodeficiency virus promoter activation. Our results indicate that the bioactive CDR-H1 PDP CB1 has retained a significant part of the parental 13B8.2 mAb properties and might be a lead for the design of anti-CD4 peptidomimetics of clinical interest.

Abstract

Recent studies have shown that expression of adhesion molecules of the Ig superfamily, of integrins and of selectins allows definition of high vs low risk B-cell chronic lymphocytic leukemia (B-CLL). The proteoglycan CD44 is an adhesion molecule that may be expressed as a standard form of 85-95 KD or as several variant isoforms. The presence of certain CD44 variant (v) isoforms on neoplastic cells indicates poor prognosis in epithelial and lymphoid malignancies, as it is associated with tumor progression and metastasis.The expression of CD44 v3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 9 and 10 was analyzed in cells from 85 B-CLL patients. Indirect immunofluorescence and flow cytometry were used to identify CD44v. Functional studies were performed by analysis of adhesion to hyaluronate (HA), one CD44 ligand, and HA-induced Ca2+ influx. A variety of statistical methods were used to define phenotypic and functional differences between the various clones, to calculate survival curves, and for multivariate analyses.In 17/85 B-CLL (20%), one or more CD44v were detectable by indirect immunofluorescence, whereas in 68/85 cases (80%) this technique yielded negative results. However, moAb "mixes" against CD44v and patching of surface molecules on B-CLL cells have shown that all B-CLL clones express CD44v. This has been confirmed by Western blot in a number of cases. Thus, two groups of patients whose cells bear CD44v at high or low density, are distinguished. Functions of the two clonotypes were investigated, namely their adhesion to a CD44 ligand and hyaluronate (HA), and effect on HA-induced Ca2+ influx. Cells expressing high density CD44v adhere to HA-coated substrates more efficiently than cells with low density CD44v. In all clones, HA-signaling via CD44 yields Ca2+ influx. This indicates that CD44 mediates activatory signals following interaction with the ligand.The clinical relevance of these findings has been ascertained. The 17/85 cases whose cells bore high density CD44v had significantly worse prognostic features than those of patients with low density CD44v, namely more advanced disease stage, LDT12 months and therapy requirement. Moreover, the median survival in the former group of patients was5 years as opposed to12 years in the latter. Therefore, analysis of CD44v expression provides indications of biological and clinical relevance also in low grade lymphoproliferative disorders.

Abstract

Inhibition of okadaic acid-sensitive phosphatases released the cyclin degradation pathway from its inhibited state in extracts prepared from unfertilized Xenopus eggs arrested at the second meiotic metaphase. It also switched on cyclin protease activity in a permanent fashion in interphase extracts prepared from activated eggs. Even after cdc2 kinase inactivation, microinjection of okadaic acid-treated interphase extracts pushed G2-arrested recipient oocytes into the M phase, suggesting that the phosphatase inhibitor stabilizes the activity of an unidentified factor which shares in common with cdc2 kinase the maturation-promoting factor activity.

Abstract

A patient suffering from Candida endocarditis presented with a gangrenous foot. In addition to arterial embolism, occult mycotic aneurysms were found by arteriography. Clinical cure was achieved with a combination of chemotherapy and valvular debridement, but viable Candida persisted in an easily removable embolus. Occult peripheral vascular lesions may be a continuing source of Candida sepsis in some patients.

Two large-scale reinforced concrete I-beams were tested to failure. The principal difference between the two specimens was the angle of inclination selected for the diagonal compression field in the web. A 45° inclination was used for specimen CM1 whereas a 31° inclination was used for specimen CM2. The validity of the truss model approach used in design was confirmed by the observed behaviour of the specimens.Diagonal crushing limits given in the Canadian code CAN3-A23.3-M84 were found to be conservative. It is recommended to use these limits for uniformly stressed web regions when applying the staggering concept of shear design. For nonuniformly stressed regions it is proposed to investigate potential failure mechanisms assuming an effective compressive strength of the web concrete of [Formula: see text].Canadian code rules for determining longitudinal bar cutoff locations may be unconservative. To prevent the formation of premature collapse crack mechanisms, it is recommended to extend the bars beyond the theoretical cutoff points by at least one-half of the stirrup spacing. Abstract

The humification of spruce bark and spruce bark plus hen manure (20% dry matter) was studied on samples taken at different stages of humification. Spruce bark was very resistant to biological attack and the amount and quality of humic materials showed little variation during the fermentation period. The addition of hen manure stimulated mineralization and humification. Na4P2O7 and NaOH solutions extracted different amounts of humic materials which showed a different distribution of compounds based on nominal molecular weights. The Van Bemmelin conversion factor F(OM = Corg × F) was clearly a function of the organic carbon content of the samples, higher values of the factor corresponding to lower amounts of carbon.

Abstract

We present a relatively completeV-band light curve of SZ Psc for 1978 and a partial light curve for 1977. From the 1978 light curve we derive a new time of primary minimum, JD⊙2443823.674±0.001, and a Russell-model solution,i=75°.8±0°.1,r h =0.096±0.003,r c =0.351±0.001, andL h =0.253±0.002. The hotter component of this system is a F5-8 main-sequence star, the cooler component a K3-4 star well above the main sequence. The system is detached with the larger component filling only 82% of its Roche lobe. The distortion wave in this RS CVn-type binary seems not to migrate regularly as do those in many other such systems, but rather seems to change phase and amplitude more erratically. Between 1977 and 1978 its phase stayed practically constant while its amplitude decreased by a factor of three. We discuss the implications of this behavior for the spot model of RS CVn-type activity. We find that the traditional comparison star for SZ Psc, HD 219018, is very likely a constant star contrary to a recent suggestion that it is variable. Its brightness and colors,V=7.705, (B-V)=0.628, and (V-I) c =0.688, are those of a G2V star.

Abstract

T HAT THE concept of transplanting the human heart has long held fascination for mankind is evident in an ancient reference to such a possibility. Chinese annals record that circa 300 B.C. the surgeon Pien Ch’iao was visited by two travelers, Kung Wu of Lu and Chi Ying of Chao, who requested that he treat them. Pien Ch’iao reportedly gave the two men a potion that rendered them unconscious for three days, during which time he interchanged both their hearts and stomachs. The two men awoke fully recovered and went their separate ways home.1 While this may be the earliest recorded instance of human heart transplantation, there is sufficient reason to doubt its authenticity. It has therefore been excluded from the accompanying list of heart transplantations performed in man (Table I). The scientific era of transplantation was ushered in by Alexis Carrel, in 1905, who was the first to report experimental heart and simultaneous heart and lung transplantations.zs Our tabulation begins some 59 years later with James Hardy’s historic transplantation of the heart of a chimpanzee into a 68 year old man. The list includes two heterografts (xenografts) and one simultaneous heart and lung transplantation. None of these patients survived. The youngest recipient (Case 3) was an 18 day old baby who also failed to survive heart transplantation. This was the only patient operated upon by a technic of hypothermia without extracorporeal perfusion. All other patients have been operated upon with extracorporeal perfusion. Age and Sex (Table II): Surprisingly, in 8 of the 66 cases the donors were older than the recipients of the transplant. In 3 of these, both donor and recipient were relatively young (an 11 year old boy to a five year old girl, a 21 year old man to an 18 year old man, and a 25 year old woman to a 22 year old man). The 18 year old man and only 1 of the remaining 5 patients are alive. All 4 recipients over the age of 60 years failed to survive the operation. The oldest survivors, however, are 59 and 58. Although the data are not complete on the patients recently operated upon, a marked improvement of survival has already become apparent (Table III). Among the first 20 allograft operations there are only 2 survivors. Eleven of this group of patients died within 3 days; 6 more died in 7, 8, 15, 18, 27 and 45 days and 1 patient died after 3 months. Of the next 46 allotransplant operations, there are 30 surviving patients. There have been at least two attempts to support the failing circulatory system after valve surgery by placing a porcine heart in parallel with the patient’s own heart.* Since these porcine hearts did not replace the patient’s own heart these cases have not been included in the tables.

Abstract

Experience with human heart transplantation is reported. A technically successful infant heart transplantation was performed on December 6, 1967. The child died 612 hours postoperatively in severe metabolic and respiratory acidosis. Another heart transplantation was performed on January 5, 1968; the recipient was a 57-year old man. The donor heart was unable to support the circulation, and the patient died 1012 hours postoperatively. Problems in the selection of donors and of recipients, in the surgical technic, and in the postoperative management are discussed.

Two patients with transvenous permanent pacemakers developed axillary-subclavian vein thrombosis along the course of the catheter long after the immediate postinsertion period. Both responded well to anticoagulation therapy. It is important to determine the frequency of venous thromboembolism related to pacemaker catheters.

Abstract

The recent introduction of an intracaval umbrella for prevention of pulmonary emboli has been followed by favorable comments concerning its efficacy. We report a patient who developed serious thromboembolism following umbrella insertion associated with thrombus on both the inferior and superior surfaces of the prosthesis. There is reason to suspect that potential clotting may be a significant drawback to this technique.

46. Exsanguinating hemoptysis

Abstract

Massive hemoptysis (600 ml in 24 hours) results in a mortality of more than 50%. We have performed 74 pulmonary resections in patients with massive hemoptysis in the last 15 years, with a mortality of 13%. The mortality correlated with the rate and the amount of recorded blood loss before the operation. From this experience, we have identified a subgroup of patients with such massive hemoptysis that life was threatened by exsanguination. Twenty-four of our patients lost more than 1,000 ml of blood, at a rate of at least 150 ml an hour, before the pulmonary resection was performed. The bleeding site was always identified by bronchoscopy. All patients were treated by resection of the bleeding lung parenchyma. Several methods were used to avoid the patient's drowning in his own blood during the operation. In five patients, a double-lumen endotracheal tube was used: Two died of suffocation during the procedure and another died of respiratory and liver failure. In four patients, single-lung ventilation with an endotracheal tube in the left main bronchus was used: All four survived. In another 10 patients a bronchial blocker (No. 9 Fogarty balloon venous catheter) was used to stop bleeding. Two patients died of renal failure and gastrointestinal bleeding, respectively, but none had aspiration problems. In five additional patients, a regular endotracheal tube was used: One patient died of massive aspiration. Our experience indicates that bleeding from the left lung and right lower lobe should be controlled by intubation of the left bronchus. Patients with exsanguinating hemoptysis should be treated, when possible, by pulmonary resection. A survival rate of 75% was obtained in our patients.

Abstract

A patient suffering from Candida endocarditis presented with a gangrenous foot. In addition to arterial embolism, occult mycotic aneurysms were found by arteriography. Clinical cure was achieved with a combination of chemotherapy and valvular débridement, but viable Candida persisted in an easily removable embolus. Occult peripheral vascular lesions may be a continuing source of Candida sepsis in some patients.
