Abstract

A foil of a metastable β Titanium alloy Ti-15V-3Cr-3Sn-3Al was irradiated at the J-PARC neutrino experimental facility with 1.4 × 1020 30 GeV protons at low temperature (100–130 °C at most), and microstructural characterization and hardness testing were conducted as an initial study on the radiation damage effects of Titanium alloy by the high energy proton beam exposure. Expected radiation damage at the beam center is about 0.06–0.12 displacement per atom. A high density (> 1023 m−3) of a nanometer-sized precipitate was observed by TEM studies, which would be identified as martensite α-phase and athermal ω-phase formed during the solution-treatment process to fabricate metastable β alloy. They did not appear to change substantially after irradiation with protons. In the irradiated specimen, we could not identify an obvious signature of radiation damage distributed along the proton beam profile. Very small, nanometer-scale black dots were present at a low density in the most highly irradiated region, and may be small dislocation loops formed during irradiation. The micro-indentation test indicated that the radiation exposure led to tiny increase in Vickers micro-hardness of ΔHV = 20 at beam center. Abstract

One of two ATLAS Forward Calorimeters, consisting of three modules, one behind the other, was exposed to particle beams of known energies in order to study the detector performance with and without the presence of upstream material in the beam, and at the inner edge of the acceptance where shower energy containment is incomplete. Data were taken in the H6 beamline at CERN using electron and hadron beams with energies from 10 to 200 GeV. Results related to the intrinsic detector calibration, based on data taken with a minimal amount of material in front of the detector, have been previously published, but are updated here. This paper focuses on studies of data taken with additional upstream material in place. The effects of this additional material on the linearity and resolution of the response are presented. The response at the inner edge of the acceptance is also investigated. For all analyses, results based on a GEANT4 simulation of the beam-test setup and detector response are also presented. © 2013 CERN.

Abstract

An Optical Transition Radiation monitor has been developed for the proton beam-line of the T2K long base-line neutrino oscillation experiment. The monitor operates in the highly radioactive environment in proximity to the T2K target. It uses optical transition radiation, the light emitted from a thin metallic foil when the charged beam passes through it, to form a 2D image of a 30 GeV proton beam. One of its key features is an optical system capable of transporting the light over a large distance out of the harsh environment near the target to a lower radiation area where it is possible to operate a camera to capture this light. The monitor measures the proton beam position and width with a precision of better than 500 {\mu}m, meeting the physics requirements of the T2K experiment., Comment: 17 pages, 21 figures, Submitted to NIM A

Abstract

The T2K experiment is a long-baseline neutrino oscillation experiment. Its main goal is to measure the last unknown lepton sector mixing angle {\theta}_{13} by observing {\nu}_e appearance in a {\nu}_{\mu} beam. It also aims to make a precision measurement of the known oscillation parameters, {\Delta}m^{2}_{23} and sin^{2} 2{\theta}_{23}, via {\nu}_{\mu} disappearance studies. Other goals of the experiment include various neutrino cross section measurements and sterile neutrino searches. The experiment uses an intense proton beam generated by the J-PARC accelerator in Tokai, Japan, and is composed of a neutrino beamline, a near detector complex (ND280), and a far detector (Super-Kamiokande) located 295 km away from J-PARC. Abstract

One of the two ATLAS Forward Calorimeters (FCal), consisting of three modules, one behind the other, was exposed to particle beams of known energies in order to obtain the energy calibration. The data were taken in the H6 beamline at CERN in the summer of 2003, using electron and hadron beams with energies from 10 to 200 GeV. The beam test setup and collected data samples are described in detail. Using data samples taken with a minimal amount of material upstream of the calorimeter, the FCal response to electrons and pions, as measured by the linearity and resolution as a function of energy, is extracted and compared to ATLAS performance requirements.
