It is currently not known if repeating fast radio bursts (FRBs) are fundamentally different from those that have not been seen to repeat. One striking difference between repeaters and apparent non-repeaters in the Canadian Hydrogen Intensity Mapping Experiment sample is that the once-off events are typically shorter in duration than sources that have been detected two or more times. We offer a simple explanation for this discrepancy based on a selection effect due to beamed emission, in which highly beamed FRBs are less easily observed to repeat, but are abundant enough to detect often as once-off events. The explanation predicts that there is a continuous distribution of burst duration – not a static bimodal one – with a correlation between repetition rate and width. Pulse width and opening angle may be related by relativistic effects in shocks, where short-duration bursts have small solid angles due to a large common Lorentz factor. Alternatively, the relationship could be a geometric effect where narrow beams sweep past the observer more quickly, as with pulsars. Our model has implications for the FRB emission mechanism and energy scale, volumetric event rates, and the application of FRBs to cosmology.

Adolescent alcohol exposure increases the risk of developing alcohol use disorders (AUDs), yet the mechanisms responsible for this vulnerability remain largely unknown. One potential target for alcohol-induced changes is the circuitry that modulates negative affect and stress, two sexually dependent drivers of alcohol relapse. The bed nucleus of the stria terminalis (BNST) is a sexually dimorphic region that critically regulates negative affective- and stress-induced relapse. Group I metabotropic glutamate receptors (mGluR) are a target of interest due to their regulation of stress, anxiety behaviors, and BNST plasticity. The current studies investigate sex-dependent sensitivity to the effects of adolescent intermittent ethanol vapor exposure (AIE) on negative affect during acute and protracted alcohol withdrawal and following stress in adulthood. This work also assessed whether BNST group I mGluR-mediated long-term depression (LTD) was disrupted at these timepoints. During acute withdrawal, AIE altered LTD induced by the group I mGluR antagonist DHPG in females, but not males. During adulthood, stress unmasked persistent changes in DHPG-induced LTD and behavior that were not present under basal conditions. Females with an AIE history demonstrated enhanced negative affective-like behavior in the novelty-induced hypophagia test following restraint stress-a phenotype that could be blocked with systemic mGluR5 allosteric antagonism via MTEP. Conversely, males with an AIE history demonstrated elevated freezing in a contextual fear conditioning paradigm. These studies demonstrate long-lasting, sex-dependent phenotypes produced by AIE and suggest pharmaceutical interventions for alcohol use and comorbid disorders may be more effective if designed with sex differences in mind.

PSR J0740$+$6620 has a gravitational mass of $2.08\pm 0.07~M_\odot$, which is the highest reliably determined mass of any neutron star. As a result, a measurement of its radius will provide unique insight into the properties of neutron star core matter at high densities. Here we report a radius measurement based on fits of rotating hot spot patterns to Neutron Star Interior Composition Explorer (NICER) and X-ray Multi-Mirror (XMM-Newton) X-ray observations. We find that the equatorial circumferential radius of PSR J0740$+$6620 is $13.7^{+2.6}_{-1.5}$ km (68%). We apply our measurement, combined with the previous NICER mass and radius measurement of PSR J0030$+$0451, the masses of two other $\sim 2~M_\odot$ pulsars, and the tidal deformability constraints from two gravitational wave events, to three different frameworks for equation of state modeling, and find consistent results at $\sim 1.5-3$ times nuclear saturation density. For a given framework, when all measurements are included the radius of a $1.4~M_\odot$ neutron star is known to $\pm 4$% (68% credibility) and the radius of a $2.08~M_\odot$ neutron star is known to $\pm 5$%. Pulsating thermal X-ray emission from millisecond pulsars can be used to obtain constraints on the neutron star equation of state, but to date only five such sources have been identified. Of these five millisecond pulsars, only two have well constrained neutron star masses, which improve the determination of the radius via modelling of the X-ray waveform. We aim to find other millisecond pulsars that already have well constrained mass and distance measurements that show pulsed thermal X-ray emission in order to obtain tight constraints on the neutron star equation of state. The millisecond pulsar PSR~J1909--3744 has an accurately determined mass, M = 1.54$\pm$0.03 M$_\odot$ (1 $\sigma$ error) and distance, D = 1.07$\pm$0.04 kpc. We analysed {\em XMM-Newton} data of this 2.95 ms pulsar to identify the nature of the X-ray emission. We show that the X-ray emission from PSR~J1909--3744 appears to be dominated by thermal emission from the polar cap. Only a single component model is required to fit the data. The black-body temperature of this emission is kT=0.26\ud{0.03}{0.02} keV and we find a 0.2--10 keV un-absorbed flux of 1.1 $\times$ 10$^{-14}$ erg cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$ or an un-absorbed luminosity of 1.5 $\times$ 10$^{30}$ erg s$^{-1}$. Thanks to the previously determined mass and distance constraints of the neutron star PSR~J1909--3744, and its predominantly thermal emission, deep observations of this object with future X-ray facilities should provide useful constraints on the neutron star equation of state., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures, accepted for publication in A&A

The increasing richness of data related to cold dense matter, from laboratory experiments to neutron-star observations, requires a framework for constraining the properties of such matter that makes use of all relevant information. Here, we present a rigorous but practical Bayesian approach that can include diverse evidence, such as nuclear data and the inferred masses, radii, tidal deformabilities, moments of inertia, and gravitational binding energies of neutron stars. We emphasize that the full posterior probability distributions of measurements should be used rather than, as is common, imposing a cut on the maximum mass or other quantities. Our method can be used with any parameterization of the equation of state (EOS). We use both a spectral parameterization and a piecewise polytropic parameterization with variable transition densities to illustrate the implications of current measurements and show how future measurements in many domains could improve our understanding of cold catalyzed matter. We find that different types of measurements will play distinct roles in constraining the EOS in different density ranges. For example, better symmetry energy measurements will have a major influence on our understanding of matter somewhat below nuclear saturation density but little influence above that density. In contrast, precise radius measurements or multiple tidal deformability measurements of the quality of those from GW170817 or better will improve our knowledge of the EOS over a broader density range., 31 pages, 14 figures, accepted in The Astrophysical Journal

NICER observed several rotation-powered millisecond pulsars to search for or confirm the presence of X-ray pulsations. When broad and sine-like, these pulsations may indicate thermal emission from hot polar caps at the magnetic poles on the neutron star surface. We report confident detections ($\ge4.7\sigma$ after background filtering) of X-ray pulsations for five of the seven pulsars in our target sample: PSR J0614-3329, PSR J0636+5129, PSR J0751+1807, PSR J1012+5307, and PSR J2241-5236, while PSR J1552+5437 and PSR J1744-1134 remain undetected. Of those, only PSR J0751+1807 and PSR J1012+5307 had pulsations previously detected at the 1.7$\sigma$ and almost 3$\sigma$ confidence levels, respectively, in XMM-Newton data. All detected sources exhibit broad sine-like pulses, which are indicative of surface thermal radiation. As such, these MSPs are promising targets for future X-ray observations aimed at constraining the neutron star mass-radius relation and the dense matter equation of state using detailed pulse profile modeling. Neutron stars are not only of astrophysical interest, but are also of great interest to nuclear physicists, because their attributes can be used to determine the properties of the dense matter in their cores. One of the most informative approaches for determining the equation of state of this dense matter is to measure both a star's equatorial circumferential radius $R_e$ and its gravitational mass $M$. Here we report estimates of the mass and radius of the isolated 205.53 Hz millisecond pulsar PSR J0030+0451 obtained using a Bayesian inference approach to analyze its energy-dependent thermal X-ray waveform, which was observed using the Neutron Star Interior Composition Explorer (NICER). This approach is thought to be less subject to systematic errors than other approaches for estimating neutron star radii. We explored a variety of emission patterns on the stellar surface. Our best-fit model has three oval, uniform-temperature emitting spots and provides an excellent description of the pulse waveform observed using NICER. The radius and mass estimates given by this model are $R_e = 13.02^{+1.24}_{-1.06}$ km and $M = 1.44^{+0.15}_{-0.14}\ M_\odot$ (68%). The independent analysis reported in the companion paper by Riley et al. (2019) explores different emitting spot models, but finds spot shapes and locations and estimates of $R_e$ and $M$ that are consistent with those found in this work. Thirty-two steers were used to examine forage type (legumes [ and ] vs. grasses [ and ]) with or without individual corn grain supplementation (0 vs. 0.75% of live weight [LW]/d) on beef fatty acid composition and palatability. In each year, steers ( = 16/yr) were randomly assigned to forage type ( = 8/forage type per yr) and to supplementation treatments within forage type ( = 4/supplementation treatment/forage type per yr). Forage types (grasses vs. legumes) were replicated in 2 paddocks of perennial and annual forage type pastures. A mixed model was developed with forage type, corn grain supplementation, and the 2-way interaction as fixed effects and 2 different error terms, one for testing forage and another for testing grain supplement and grain supplement × forage interaction. Corn grain supplementation increased ( = 0.01) ADG by 0.29 kg/d and final LW by 13 kg. Hot carcass weight, dressing percentage (DP), and KPH were greater ( 0.05) by forage type, supplementation, or the 2-way interaction. Beef finished on legumes had greater concentrations of -3 PUFA, whereas beef supplemented with corn grain had a greater ratio of -6 to -3 fatty acids. On a gravimetric basis (mg/100 g LM), -3 PUFA and CLA contents were not altered with supplementation, indicating that corn grain can be supplemented at this level in a forage-finishing beef system without negative consequences on perceived beneficial fatty acids.

Observations of thermonuclear X-ray bursts from accreting neutron stars (NSs) in low-mass X-ray binary systems can be used to constrain NS masses and radii. Most previous work of this type has set these constraints using Planck function fits as a proxy: both the models and the data are fit with diluted blackbody functions to yield normalizations and temperatures which are then compared against each other. Here, for the first time, we fit atmosphere models of X-ray bursting NSs directly to the observed spectra. We present a hierarchical Bayesian fitting framework that uses state-of-the-art X-ray bursting NS atmosphere models with realistic opacities and relativistic exact Compton scattering kernels as a model for the surface emission. We test our approach against synthetic data, and find that for data that are well-described by our model we can obtain robust radius, mass, distance, and composition measurements. We then apply our technique to Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer observations of five hard-state X-ray bursts from 4U 1702-429. Our joint fit to all five bursts shows that the theoretical atmosphere models describe the data well but there are still some unmodeled features in the spectrum corresponding to a relative error of 1-5% of the energy flux. After marginalizing over this intrinsic scatter, we find that at 68% credibility the circumferential radius of the NS in 4U 1702-429 is R = 12.4+-0.4 km, the gravitational mass is M=1.9+-0.3 Msun, the distance is 5.1 < D/kpc < 6.2, and the hydrogen mass fraction is X < 0.09., 15 pages, 11 figures, submitted to A&A

Angus-cross steers (n = 96; BW = 309 ± 34 kg; 13.5 mo of age) were used to determine the effects of frame size (medium or small) and time-on-pasture (TOP) on meat composition and palatability in a 2-yr study. Finishing steers grazed mixed pastures (bluegrass/ white clover; April start) and were slaughtered after 89-, 146-, and 201-d TOP. At 24 h postmortem, carcass traits were collected and a rib from each carcass was obtained for proximate and fatty acid composition, Warner-Bratzler shear force (WBSF), and postmortem proteolysis. In yr 1, postmortem aging treatments included 14 and 28 d, whereas in yr 2, postmortem aging treatments included 2, 4, 7, 14, and 28 d. Increasing frame size of the finishing steers produced greater (P 0.05) due to frame size or 2-way interaction with TOP. Increasing TOP resulted in quadratic increases (P 0.05) compared to the 14-d postmortem aging WBSF values. However, in steaks from 201-d TOP, additional postmortem aging to 28 d reduced (P < 0.001) WBSF. In pasture-based beef finishing systems, increasing TOP increases animal age, HCW, fat thickness, and marbling score; however, ten- derness of ribeye steaks decreased with advanced TOP such that longer postmortem aging times were required to achieve similar tenderness levels.

Angus-cross steers (n = 60) were used to assess the effect of forage species [alfalfa (AL; Medicago sativa L.), bermudagrass (BG; Cynodon dactylon), chicory (CH; Cichorium intybus L.), cowpea (CO; Vigna unguiculata L.), and pearl millet (PM; Pennisetum glaucum (L. R Br.)] in replicated 2-ha paddocks for finishing on cattle performance, carcass quality, and meat quality in a 2-yr study. Steers were blocked by BW and assigned randomly to finishing-forage treatments before the start of the experiment. Steers grazing AL and CH had greater (P 1 kg/d). Finishing on legumes (AL and CO) increased dressing percentage, reduced Warner-Bratzler shear force values, and increased consumers preference, whereas finishing on grasses (BG and PM) enhanced anticarcinogenic fatty acid concentrations.

Palmitelaidic (C16:1 trans-9) acid has been suggested to have beneficial effects on human health, including reduced adiposity. Objectives of this research were to quantify the amounts of palmitelaidic acid in beef samples and determine the effect of palmitelaidic acid supplementation on lipogenesis in bovine preadipocytes and adipocytes in vitro. For the first objective, palmitelaidic acid content of LM samples from steers finished on forage or concentrate systems was determined. Palmitelaidic acid in LM samples from forage-finished beef ranged from 10 to 17 mg/100 g of muscle corresponding to 0.52% to 0.65% of total fatty acids. Forage species grazed during finishing, and animal age at harvest also altered palmitelaidic acid concentrations and contents in the LM of forage-finished beef. Palmitelaidic acid concentration of concentrate-finished beef was lower (P 0.05) to beef from steers finished on pearl millet and greater (P 0.05) the viability of differentiated adipocytes. In preadipocytes, palmitelaidic acid increased (P < 0.05) palmitelaidic and trans-11 vaccenic (C18:1 trans-11) acids at high levels of supplementation (300 μM). In adipocytes, palmitelaidic acid supplementation increased (P < 0.05) palmitelaidic acid, trans-11 vaccenic acid, and total fatty acid content. In addition, cis-9, trans-11 CLA also increased (P < 0.05) with palmitelaidic acid supplementation in adipocytes. These results indicate that palmitelaidic acid can be elongated in both preadipocytes and adipocytes and desaturated in adipocytes to generate trans-11 vaccenic acid and cis-9, trans-11 CLA, respectively. Beef products are a source of palmitelaidic acid in the human diet, which can be elongated and desaturated to produce trans-11 vaccenic acid and cis-9, trans-11 CLA.

BACKGROUND We previously reported results of a prospective trial evaluating the significance of circulating tumor cells (CTCs) in patients with metastatic colorectal cancer (mCRC). This secondary analysis assessed the relationship of the CTC number with carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) and overall survival. PATIENTS AND METHODS Patients with mCRC had CTCs measured at baseline and specific time points after the initiation of new therapy. Patients with a baseline CEA value ≥ 10 ng/ml and CEA measurements within ± 30 days of the CTC collection were included. RESULTS We included 217 patients with mCRC who had a CEA value of ≥ 10 ng/ml. A new white beam powder diffraction facility has been constructed in station 16.4 of the Daresbury laboratory Synchrotron Radiation Source (SRS). The station consists of a beam definition apparatus, a number of sample environments and an energy-dispersive powder diffractometer. The facility is optimised for kinetic studies using high energy X-rays. The facility is also equipped with a 1000 tonne hydraulic press for high pressure, high temperature studies. An overview of the station hardware, electronics and data acquisition software is presented. The use of this facility is illustrated with data collected as part of an in-situ, time resolved study of the high temperature hydrothermal synthesis of a microporous aluminophosphate.

Disk and wind signatures are seen in the soft state of Galactic black holes, while the jet is seen in the hard state. Here we study the disk–wind connection in the ρ class of variability in GRS 1915+105 using a joint NuSTAR–Chandra observation. The source shows 50 s limit cycle oscillations. By including new information provided by the reflection spectrum and using phase-resolved spectroscopy, we find that the change in the inner disk inferred from the blackbody emission is not matched by reflection measurements. The latter is almost constant, independent of the continuum model. The two radii are comparable only if the disk temperature color correction factor changes, an effect that could be due to the changing opacity of the disk caused by changes in metal abundances. The disk inclination is similar to that inferred from the jet axis, and oscillates by ~10°. The simultaneous Chandra data show the presence of two wind components with velocities between 500 and 5000 km s⁻¹, and possibly two more with velocities reaching 20,000 km s⁻¹ (~0.06 c). The column densities are ~5 × 10²² cm⁻². An experiment was designed to determine the effect of forage species on growth rate and gastrointestinal nematode infection in lambs. Southdown lambs (n = 20; 26 ± 4.28 kg initial BW) stratified by weight, sex and FAMACHA© score were assigned to graze either bermudagrass [BG; Cynodon dactylon (L.) Pers.] or chicory [CH; Cichorium intybus L.]. Lambs grazed for 80 d from July 7, 2009 to September 25, 2009. Lambs were weighed and FAMACHA© scored every 14 d. A number of neutron star low-mass X-ray binaries have recently been discovered to show broad, asymmetric Fe K emission lines in their X-ray spectra. These lines are generally thought to be the most prominent part of a reflection spectrum, originating in the inner part of the accretion disk where strong relativistic effects can broaden emission lines. We present a comprehensive, systematic analysis of Suzaku and XMM-Newton spectra of 10 neutron star low-mass X-ray binaries, all of which display broad Fe K emission lines. Of the 10 sources, 4 are Z sources, 4 are atolls and 2 are accreting millisecond X-ray pulsars (also atolls). The Fe K lines are well fit by a relativistic line model for a Schwarzschild metric, and imply a narrow range of inner disk radii (6 - 15 GM/c^2) in most cases. This implies that the accretion disk extends close to the neutron star surface over a range of luminosities. Continuum modeling shows that for the majority of observations, a blackbody component (plausibly associated with the boundary layer) dominates the X-ray emission from 8 - 20 keV. Thus it appears likely that this spectral component produces the majority of the ionizing flux that illuminates the accretion disk. Therefore, we also fit the spectra with a blurred reflection model, wherein a blackbody component illuminates the disk. We assessed the value of circulating tumour cells (CTC) in ACC patients treated with chemotherapy plus targeted agents (CAIRO2 phase III trial) and compared the results with computed tomography (CT) imaging. MATERIALS AND METHODS: CTC were determined at baseline and at different time points during treatment. Patients were stratified into low (less than three CTC per 7.5 ml of blood) or high CTC (three or more CTC per 7.5 ml of blood). RESULTS: A total of 467 patients were assessable for CTC analysis. Among them, 129 patients (29%) with high baseline CTC had a significantly decreased progression-free survival [PFS; hazard ratio (HR) 1.5] and overall survival (OS; HR 2.2) compared with 322 patients with low baseline CTC. This difference remained statistically significant during treatment. The sensitivity and specificity of high CTC at baseline for the prediction of progressive disease on CT imaging were 16.7% and 70.1%, respectively, and of high CTC at 1-2 weeks after the start of treatment 20.0% and 95.1%, respectively. The combined analysis of CTC and CT imaging provided a more accurate outcome assessment than either modality alone. CONCLUSIONS: The CTC count before and during treatment independently predicts PFS and OS in ACC patients treated with chemotherapy plus targeted agents and provides additional information to CT imaging. 01 mei 2010

Graptolites from three shallow core holes penetrating lower Silurian strata in central Saudi Arabia identify rocks of mid Aeronian and early Telychian age. The graptolites comprise Campograptus undulatus?, C. lobiferus?, Lituigraptus convolutus, Metaclimacograptus bohemicus, Neolagarograptus rickardsi, Normalograptus? aff. scalaris, cf. Paradiversograptuscapillaris,Petalolithusminor,P.praecursor,P.ovatoelongatus?, Pristiograptus regularis sl, Pseudorthograptus insectiformis, Pseudoretiolites perlatus? and Torquigraptus? decipiens, which identify the mid Aeronian convolutus Biozone, and Monograptus bjerreskovae, Monograptus ex gr. marri, Paradiversograptus runcinatus?, Petalolithus cf. altissimus, Pristiograptus renaudi, Stimulograptus becki and S. halli?, which indicate the early Telychian guerichi Biozone. The graptolite faunas are generally of low diversity, with most levels yielding between one and three species, occasionally rising to as many as seven species. The palaeogeography of the depositional basin, coupled with the low diversity and the abundance of Pristiograptus and Normalograptus species, suggests a marine-shelf setting. This is also indicated by the common occurrence of benthic shelly fossils, including articulated bivalves and gastropods. In general, the graptolite faunas are of much lower diversity than contemporaneous marine assemblages from the British Isles or the Czech Republic, and probably represent a graptolite biotope of “cratonic invaders.” Graptolites are very well preserved, displaying detail of fusellar banding (growth increments) and perhaps ultrastructure.

The ratio of -6 to -3 PUFA was greater ( = 0.03) in the LM of corn grain-supplemented steers than in the LM of nonsupplemented steers. Supplementation of corn grain decreased (0.05) the percentage of odd-chain fatty acids and increased (0.05) the percentage of MUFA in the LM. Warner-Bratzler shear force values were not altered (0.05) by forage type, supplementation, or the 2-way interaction. Beef finished on legumes had greater concentrations of -3 PUFA, whereas beef supplemented with corn grain had a greater ratio of -6 to -3 fatty acids. On a gravimetric basis (mg/100 g LM), -3 PUFA and CLA contents were not altered with supplementation, indicating that corn grain can be supplemented at this level in a forage-finishing beef system without negative consequences on perceived beneficial fatty acids.

The Large Area Detector (LAD) on the Large Observatory For X-ray Timing ( LOFT ), with a 8.5 m 2 photon- collecting area in the 2–30 keV bandpass at CCD-class spectral resolving power (λ/Δλ = 10 – 100), is designed for optimum performance on bright X-ray sources. Thus, it is well-suited to study thermonuclear X-ray bursts from Galactic neutron stars. These bursts will typically yield 2 x 105 photon detections per second in the LAD, which is at least 15 times more than with any other instrument past, current or anticipated. The Wide Field Monitor (WFM) foreseen for LOFT uniquely combines 2–50 keV imaging with large (30%) prompt sky coverage. This will enable the detection of tens of thousands of thermonuclear X-ray bursts during a 3-yr mission, including tens of superbursts. Both numbers are similar or more than the current database gathered in 50 years of X-ray astronomy.

Laser-Produced plasmas at subcritical densities have proven to be efficient sources for X-ray production. In this context, we obtain experimental results from Kr and Xe gas-filled targets that were irradiated by the OMEGA (Laboratory for Laser Energetics, University of Rochester) laser. Nearly 40% of the laser energy was converted into X-rays in the L-shell-photon-energy range (≥ 1.6 keV) by a Kr-filled target. The conversion efficiency measurements were correlated with time-resolved plasma-temperature measurements done by means of a Thomson-scattering diagnostic. The measured range of temperatures, between 2-3.5 keV, is in good agreement with LASNEX radiation-hydrodynamics simulations. X-ray-cooling rates and charge-state distributions were computed using detailed atomic data from the HULLAC suite of codes. X-ray yields predicted by the cooling-rate calculations are compared to measured spectra, and good agreement is found for predictions made with highly-detailed atomic models. We find that X-ray conversion efficiency in Kr-filled targets is a strong function of temperature, and has an optimum density near 15% of the laser's critical density. © 2005 Elsevier Ltd. Cool thermal emission components have recently been revealed in the X-ray spectra of a small number of ultra-luminous X-ray (ULX) sources with L_X > 1 E+40 erg/s in nearby galaxies. These components can be well fitted with accretion disk models, with temperatures approximately 5-10 times lower than disk temperatures measured in stellar-mass Galactic black holes when observed in their brightest states. Because disk temperature is expected to fall with increasing black hole mass, and because the X-ray luminosity of these sources exceeds the Eddington limit for 10 Msun black holes (L_Edd = 1.3 E+39 erg/s), these sources are extremely promising intermediate-mass black hole candidates (IMBHCs). In this Letter, we directly compare the inferred disk temperatures and luminosities of these ULXs, with the disk temperatures and luminosities of a number of Galactic black holes. The sample of stellar-mass black holes was selected to include different orbital periods, companion types, inclinations, and column densities. These ULXs and stellar-mass black holes occupy distinct regions of a L_X -- kT diagram, suggesting these ULXs may harbor IMBHs. We briefly discuss the important strengths and weaknesses of this interpretation.

A series of underdense laser plasma interaction experiments performed on the Helen laser [M. J. Norman et al., Appl. Opt. 41, 3497 (2002)] at the Atomic Weapons Establishment (AWE), U.K., using 2ω light have uncovered a strong dependence of laser backscatter and hot electron production on plasma composition. Using low-Z materials, we find a behavior familiar from previous 3ω work, the interchange of stimulated Raman scattering for Brillouin scattering as we change from gases that have high ion wave damping (e.g., C5H12) to gases with low ion wave damping (e.g., CO2). However, as Z is increased, we find that Brillouin scattering drops while Raman scattering remains low. For gases with Z greater than 18, it is possible to have long scalelength, underdense plasmas with both low Brillouin and Raman backscatter losses. X-ray sources are created at the Nova and Omega laser by irradiating a confined volume of Ar and Xe gas. The gas is heated by 20–35 kJ of 0.35 μm laser light and becomes a highly ionized mm-sized x-ray source which emits K-shell or L-shell x rays. The radiator is “underdense,” meaning that the initial electron density is lower than the critical density of the laser, nc∼1022 cm−3. It is heated primarily by inverse bremsstrahlung, which produces a supersonic ionization wave. In this paper, x-ray conversion efficiency and imaging from time-resolved and time-integrated diagnostics are compared over a range of experimental parameters. This work represents an important, new method for development of efficient, large-area, tailored multi-keV x-ray sources.

We have analyzed an XMM-Newton observation of the nearby spiral galaxy NGC 1313, which contains two "ultra-luminous" X-ray (ULX) sources. We measure isotropic luminosities of L_X = 2.0 * 10^(40) erg/s and L_X = 6.6 * 10^(39) erg/s for NGC 1313 X-1 and X-2 (0.2-10.0 keV, assuming a distance of 3.7 Mpc). The spectra statistically require soft and hard spectral components to describe the continuum emission; some prior studies of ULXs have claimed cool soft components with lower statistics. The improvement over several single-component models exceeds the 8 sigma level of confidence for X-1; the improvement for X-2 is significant at the 3 sigma level. The soft components in these ULX spectra are well-fit by multi-color disk blackbody models with color temperatures of kT = 150 eV. This temperature differs markedly from those commonly measured in the spectra of stellar-mass (10 M_sun) black holes in their brightest states (kT ~ 1 keV). It is expected that the temperature of an accretion disk orbiting a black hole should decrease with increasing black hole mass. If the soft components we measure are due to emission from the inner region of an accretion disk, and disks extend close to the innermost stable circular orbit at the accretion rates being probed, the low color temperatures may be interpreted as spectroscopic evidence of black holes with intermediate masses: M_BH ~ 10^(3) M_sun. Simple Eddington scaling arguments suggest a mimum mass of M_BH ~ 10^(2) M_sun. Angus-cross steers (n = 96; BW = 309 ± 34 kg; 13.5 mo of age) were used to determine the effects of frame size (medium or small) and time-on-pasture (TOP) on meat composition and palatability in a 2-yr study. Finishing steers grazed mixed pastures (bluegrass/white clover; April start) and were slaughtered after 89-, 146-, and 201-d TOP. At 24 h postmortem, carcass traits were collected and a rib from each carcass was obtained for proximate and fatty acid composition, Warner-Bratzler shear force (WBSF), and postmortem proteolysis. In yr 1, postmortem aging treatments included 14 and 28 d, whereas in yr 2, postmortem aging treatments included 2, 4, 7, 14, and 28 d. Increasing frame size of the finishing steers produced greater (P0.05) ADG by 0.10 kg, BW by 24 kg, HCW by 14 kg, and ribeye size by 2.65 cm(2). All other carcass, meat composition, and tenderness measures did not differ (P0.05) due to frame size or 2-way interaction with TOP. Increasing TOP resulted in quadratic increases (P0.01) in BW and HCW. Ribeye area, fat thickness, KPH, marbling scores, quality grades, and yield grades increased (P0.001) linearly as TOP increased. Time-on-pasture linearly increased (P = 0.001) palmitic (C16:0) acid, oleic (C18:1 cis-9) acid, SFA, and MUFA in the LM. Both n-6 PUFA, linoleic (C18:2) and arachidonic (C20:4) acids, decreased linearly (P = 0.001) with increasing TOP. Increasing TOP linearly reduced (P = 0.01) concentrations of all n-3 fatty acids in the LM. These changes resulted in a linear reduction (P = 0.01) in n-6 to n-3 fatty acid ratio with advancing TOP; however, the magnitude of the difference was small (1.46 vs. 1.37). At 14 d of postmortem aging, WBSF was lowest (P0.001) for 89-d TOP and greatest (P0.05) for the 201-d TOP. After 28 d of postmortem aging, WBSF values for 89- and 146-d TOP did not differ (P0.05) compared to the 14-d postmortem aging WBSF values. However, in steaks from 201-d TOP, additional postmortem aging to 28 d reduced (P0.001) WBSF. In pasture-based beef finishing systems, increasing TOP increases animal age, HCW, fat thickness, and marbling score; however, tenderness of ribeye steaks decreased with advanced TOP such that longer postmortem aging times were required to achieve similar tenderness levels.

The Large Observatory For x-ray Timing (LOFT) was studied within ESA M3 Cosmic Vision framework and participated in the final down-selection for a launch slot in 2022-2024. Thanks to the unprecedented combination of effective area and spectral resolution of its main instrument, LOFT will study the behaviour of matter under extreme conditions, such as the strong gravitational field in the innermost regions of accretion flows close to black holes and neutron stars, and the supra-nuclear densities in the interior of neutron stars. The science payload is based on a Large Area Detector (LAD, 10 m 2 effective area, 2-30 keV, 240 eV spectral resolution, 1 deg collimated field of view) and a WideField Monitor (WFM, 2-50 keV, 4 steradian field of view, 1 arcmin source location accuracy, 300 eV spectral resolution). The WFM is equipped with an on-board system for bright events (e.g. GRB) localization. The trigger time and position of these events are broadcast to the ground within 30 s from discovery. The five species of the nudibranch family Aeolidiidae known to occur in New Zealand waters are reviewed. Detailed descriptions are provided for four of the species, Anteaeolidiella indica (Bergh, 1888) originally Aeolidiella indica; Spurilla faustina (Bergh, 1900) originally Aeolidiella faustina; Aeolidiella drusilla Bergh, 1900 and Baeolidia australis (Rudman, 1982) originally Spurilla australis. These are appraised in respect of what was known previously. Nothing can be added to the description of the fifth species, Burnaia helicochorda (Miller, 1987) originally Aeolidia helicochorda, as no more specimens have been found. A revision of all of the genera is attempted. As a consequence nine genera are maintained and two new ones created. Anteaeolidiella gen. nov. is created to accommodate Aeolidiella indica which does not sit comfortably in Aeolidiella or any of the other aeolidiid genera because of the arrangement of the cerata (multi-rowed clusters) and shape of the oral glands (spindle-shaped reservoir...

The Lunar Prospector (LP) Gamma-Ray Spectrometer (GRS) has been used to map the global abundance of thorium on the lunar surface. A global map of absolute thorium abundances on a 2° by 2° equal-area pixel scale is presented using new detector modeling results and low altitude LP data. Because thorium is relatively abundant in KREEP-rich material, these data provide fundamental information regarding the locations and importance of terranes that are rich in KREEP bearing materials.

The boronated aromatic amino acids were shown to be potent hypolipidemic agents in mice lowering both serum cholesterol and triglycerides after 16 days. Selective compounds were as effective as the clinical standards. Furthermore, the compounds were effective anti-inflammatory agents reducing local and central pain as well as suppressing LPS induced endotoxic shock in mice. These agents inhibited lysosomal and proteolytic enzymes of the liver and macrophages as a part of their mechanism of action.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the mechanism by which 2-acetylpyrazine-4N-substituted thiosemicarbazone copper II complexes mediate their cytotoxicity. These compounds were shown to be cytotoxic to a variety of human and rodent tumors in cell culture and are potent cytocidal agents as determined by dilute agar colony assays. They demonstrated the ability to inhibit several enzymes in vitro including DNA topoisomerase II activity. The data presented suggest that cytotoxicity may be mediated by the cumulative effect of several enzymes being inhibited by the agents. Copyright © 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

SRS station 16.3 is now a fully scheduled user facility for high-resolution and high-energy single-crystal X-ray diffraction. It is based on a large three-axis diffractometer, designed and constructed at Daresbury for a wide range of physics and materials science applications. Served by wiggler 16 (a 6 T superconducting wavelength-shifter), the station has access to a broad spectrum of photon energies, extending to over 50 keV, and is designed for simple polarization-state tuning by motorized height adjustment of all optical components. This paper outlines the key design features and some of the science projects carried out during the first year of operation.

Energy-dispersive X-ray diffraction using synchrotron radiation has a number of advantages for determination of crystallographic texture, and we present an instrument for use on Station 16.4 of the Daresbury SRS, designed primarily for texture studies on surface layers. The instrument allows measurement at low angles of incidence to enhance surface sensitivity. It can typically acquire texture information at 176 ( ψ , φ ) orientation points in around 2 h, and provides a complete set of pole figures simultaneously.

Amine-carboxyboranes with varying alkyl chain lengths were observed to be potent cytotoxic agents inhibiting the growth of a number of histological types of murine, rat, and human tumors. These agents preferentially reduced L1210 DNA synthesis with marked inhibition of the activities of regulatory enzymes of the purine pathway. Other enzyme activities which were marginally reduced were DNA polymerase alpha, ribonucleoside reductase, dihydrofolate reductase, t-RNA polymerase, and nucleoside kinases. Pyrimidine nucleotide pools were not reduced but DNA strand scission occurred after 24 h incubation with the agents. The amine-carboxyboranes were not DNA topoisomerase II inhibitors at 100 microM. The agents did not cause DNA protein linked breaks themselves; nevertheless, VP-16 [etoposide] induced DNA protein linked breaks were increased two fold in the presence of the agents suggesting synergistic effects. The amine-carboxyboranes decreased protein kinase C mediated phosphorylation of L1210 topoisomerase II protein, potentially decreasing its enzymatic catalytic activity. Thus, the amine-carboxyboranes did not function like VP-16 in affording cleavable products but were synergistic with VP-16 in causing DNA fragmentation. The agents were also additive with VP-16 in reducing tumor cell number, soft-agar colony growth and DNA synthesis and in producing DNA strand scission.

An in situ method to study the crystn. of natural gas hydrates using synchrotron x-rays was developed at Daresbury Lab. The novel technique involved the construction of a high pressure, large vol. cell to grow hydrate material and the use of energy-dispersive powder diffraction on Station 16.4 to probe crystal development. The first expt. was the observation of diffraction patterns from CO2/water during hydrate formation and subsequently the method was used to study the propane system. In this, structural results and the development of diffraction peaks as a function of time were obtained. [on SciFinder(R)]

1-Acetyl-(6-picolyl)- 4 N-substituted thiosemicarbazones and their copper(II) complexes were shown to be potent antineoplastic and cytotoxic agents against murine and human cultured cells. Numerous derivatives were as active against solid tumor growth as clinically useful agents.The agents inhibited L 1210 DNA and RNA syntheses with inhibition of key regulatory enzyme activities of the purine pathway as well as nucleoside kinase activities. d[NTP] pools were reduced and DNA strand scission occurred. These agents were DNA topoisomerase II inhibitors with lower IC 50 values than that of VP-16. However, they did not cause L 1210 DNA protein linked breaks and actually protected against those breaks afforded by VP-16. The agents were not synergistic with VP-16 in reducing cell growth or DNA synthesis although they did reduce growth of L 1210 cells in agar suspended media.

A novel energy-dispersive diffractometer has been designed in which diffraction patterns can be collected simultaneously at three angles. This results in a much wider overall coverage of reciprocal space and a matching of the X-ray source and detection system to chosen regions of a pattern so that quantitative analysis is considerably enhanced. We predict a wide acceptance of the technique for in situ studies and multi-phase analysis.

The amine carboxyborane metal complexes, tetrakis - μ - (trimethylamine - boranecarboxylato)acetonitrile dicopper(II) and his-μ-(morpholine-boranecarboxylato)zinc(II) dihydrate demonstrated cytotoxic activity against human Tmolt 3 , HeLa-S 3 and MB-9812 cell growth. Tetrakis-μ-(trimethylamine-boranecarboxylato)-acetonitrile dicopper(II) and bis - μ - (morpholine - boranecarboxylato)zinc (II) dihydrate inhibited L 1210 DNA, RNA and protein syntheses, with greatest inhibitory effects on DNA synthesis. The reduction in DNA synthesis correlates well with inhibition of de novo purine synthesis and the key enzymes involved in this pathway, i.e. IMP dehydrogenase and PRPP amido transferase. These compounds were also observed to induce DNA strand scission but did not appear to intercalate between base pairs of DNA, alkylate bases or cause cross-linking of the strands of DNA. Tetrakis-μ-(trimethylamine - boranecarboxylato)acetonitrile dicopper(II) also demonstrated the ability to inhibit L 1210 DNA topoisomerase II activity.

Sodium N-[(trimethylamineboryl)-carbonyl]-L-phenylalanine 2 and {N-[(trimethylamineboryl)-carbonyl]-L-phenylalanyl- carbxylato}-bis-{N-[(trimethylaminebryl)-carbonyl]-L-phenylalanine} dicopper (II) 3 were successfully synthesized. The agents blocked L1210 leukemic cell DNA and RNA syntheses by inhibiting multiple enzyme activities for nucleic acid synthesis, e.g. PRPP amido transferase, IMP dehydrogenase, DNA polymerase α, thymidine kinase, and TMP kinase. The copper (II) complex 3 demonstrated improved ability to inhibit L1210 partially purified DNA topoisomerase II compared to the parent compound while the sodium salt was inactive at 100 μM.

Summary The amine-carboxyboranes were shown to be synergistic with tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNFα) in cytotoxicity and inhibition of DNA synthesis in select types of cancer cells depending on the presence of a TNFα high affinity receptor on the membrane of the cell. Initially both TNFα and the amine-carboxyboranes reduce the influx of calcium but later cause a significant increase intracellularly. This influx is not linked with the amine-carboxyborane activating the calcitonin receptor in the tumor cells. Neither the agents nor TNFa directly inhibits DNA topoisomerase II activity but both did cause decreased phosphorylation of the enzyme by protein kinase C (PKC). The two agents caused synergistic inhibition. This event correlated with increased DNA protein linked breaks, DNA fragmentation and cell death. These protein linked breaks are additive with etoposide's effects but the latter agent's mechanism is different than phosphorylation of topoisomerase II. There was no evidence that the DNA fragmentation was caused hy a calcium induced endonuclease enzyme in these cancer cells. The low-molecular weight amine-carboxyboranes appear to play an identical function as TNFα in its role to cause DNA breaks and fragmentation to cause apoptosis. © 1998 Elsevier, Paris.

Nickel(II) complexes of thiosemicarbazons were observed to be potent cytotoxic agents in human and rodent tissue cultured tumor cells. Each compound demonstrated a slightly different profile in the various histological types of tumors. The nickel complex of Appip demonstrated the most potent in vivo activity in the Ehrlich ascites carcinoma. This agent selectively inhibited L1210 DNA and purine syntheses, and DNA polymerase α, PRPP-amido transferase, IMP-dehydrogenase, dihydrofolate reductase, TMP-kinase and thymidylate synthetase activities. L1210 DNA strand scission was evident and DNA viscosity was reduced after 24 hr incubation. The nickel complexes were not L1210 DNA topoisomerase II inhibitors.

Soft, potentially thermal spectral components observed in some ULXs can be fit with models for emission from cool, optically-thick accretion disks. If that description is correct, the low temperatures that are observed imply accretion onto "intermediate-mass" black holes. Subsequent work has found that these components may follow an inverse relationship between luminosity and temperature, implying a non-blackbody origin for this emission. We have re-analyzed numerous XMM-Newton spectra of extreme ULXs. Crucially, observations wherein the source fell on a chip gap were excluded owing to their uncertain flux calibration, and the neutral column density along the line of sight to a given source was jointly determined by multiple spectra. The luminosity of the soft component is found to be positively correlated with temperature, and to be broadly consistent with L ~ T^4 in the measured band pass, as per blackbody emission from a standard thin disk. These results are nominally consistent with accretion onto black holes with masses above the range currently known in Galactic X-ray binaries, though there are important caveats. Palmitelaidic (C16:1 trans-9) acid has been suggested to have beneficial effects on human health, including reduced adiposity. Objectives of this research were to quantify the amounts of palmitelaidic acid in beef samples and determine the effect of palmitelaidic acid supplementation on lipogenesis in bovine preadipocytes and adipocytes in vitro. For the first objective, palmitelaidic acid content of LM samples from steers finished on forage or concentrate systems was determined. Palmitelaidic acid in LM samples from forage-finished beef ranged from 10 to 17 mg/100 g of muscle corresponding to 0.52% to 0.65% of total fatty acids. Forage species grazed during finishing, and animal age at harvest also altered palmitelaidic acid concentrations and contents in the LM of forage-finished beef. Palmitelaidic acid concentration of concentrate-finished beef was lower (P0.05; 0.25% vs. 0.56%); however, because of increased (P0.05) total fatty acid content with concentrate finishing, amount of palmitelaidic acid was similar (P0.05) to beef from steers finished on pearl millet and greater (P0.05) than those finished on alfalfa. For the second objective, undifferentiated preadipocytes and differentiated adipocytes were supplemented with 0 to 300 μM of palmitelaidic acid. Palmitelaidic acid supplementation reduced (P0.05) cell viability of undifferentiated preadipocytes at greater levels (150 and 300 μM) but did not affect (P0.05) the viability of differentiated adipocytes. In preadipocytes, palmitelaidic acid increased (P0.05) palmitelaidic and trans-11 vaccenic (C18:1 trans-11) acids at high levels of supplementation (300 μM). In adipocytes, palmitelaidic acid supplementation increased (P0.05) palmitelaidic acid, trans-11 vaccenic acid, and total fatty acid content. In addition, cis-9, trans-11 CLA also increased (P0.05) with palmitelaidic acid supplementation in adipocytes. These results indicate that palmitelaidic acid can be elongated in both preadipocytes and adipocytes and desaturated in adipocytes to generate trans-11 vaccenic acid and cis-9, trans-11 CLA, respectively. Beef products are a source of palmitelaidic acid in the human diet, which can be elongated and desaturated to produce trans-11 vaccenic acid and cis-9, trans-11 CLA.
