Abstract

Reduced transition probabilities have been extracted between excited, yrast states in the N=Z+2 nucleus 94Pd. The transitions of interest were observed following decays of the Iπ=14+, Ex=2129-keV isomeric state, which was populated following the projectile fragmentation of a 124Xe primary beam at the GSI Helmholtzzentrum für Schwerionenforschung accelerator facility as part of FAIR Phase-0. Experimental information regarding the reduced E2 transition strengths for the decays of the yrast 8+ and 6+ states was determined following isomer-delayed Eγ1−Eγ2−△T2,1 coincidence method, using the LaBr3(Ce)-based FATIMA fast-timing coincidence gamma-ray array, which allowed direct determination of lifetimes of states in 94Pd using the Generalized Centroid Difference (GCD) method. The experimental value for the half-life of the yrast 8+ state of 755(106) ps results in a reduced transition probability of B(E2:8→+6+) = 205−25+34 e2fm4, which enables a precise verification of shell-model calculations for this unique system, lying directly between the N=Z line and the N=50 neutron shell closure. The determined B(E2) value provides an insight into the purity of (g9/2)n configurations in competition with admixtures from excitations between the (lower) N=3pf and (higher) N=4gds orbitals for the first time. The results indicate weak collectivity expected for near-zero quadrupole deformation and an increasing importance of the T=0 proton-neutron interaction at N=48.

Abstract

The multinucleon transfer (MNT) reaction approach was successfully employed for the first time to measure the isomeric ratios (IRs) of 211Po isomer (25/2+) and its ground state (9/2+) at the IGISOL facility using a 945 MeV 136Xe beam impinged on 209Bi and natPb targets. The dominant production of isomers compared to the corresponding ground states was consistently revealed in the α-decay spectra. Deduced IR of 211Po populated through the 136Xe+natPb reaction was found to have an enhancement of ≈1.8-times than that observed for the 136Xe+209Bi. State-of-the-art Langevin-type model calculations have been utilized to estimate the spin distribution of an MNT residue. The computations qualitatively corroborate with the considerable increase in the IRs of 211Po produced from 136Xe+natPb compared to 136Xe+209Bi. Theoretical investigations indicate a weak dependence of target spin on the IRs. The enhancement of the 211Po isomer in the 136Xe+natPb over 136Xe+209Bi can be attributed to the different proton (p)-transfer production routes. Estimations demonstrate an increment in the angular momentum transfer, favorable for isomer production, with increasing projectile energy. Comparative analysis reveals the two entrance channel parameters, projectile mass and p-transfer channels, strongly influencing the population of the high-spin isomer of 211Po (25/2+). This letter reports the first experimental and theoretical study on the IRs of nuclei formed from two different p-transfer channels via two independent MNT reactions.

Abstract

The first low-energy Coulomb-excitation measurement of the radioactive, semi-magic, two proton-hole nucleus 206Hg, was performed at CERN's recently-commissioned HIE-ISOLDE facility. Two γ rays depopulating low-lying states in 206Hg were observed. From the data, a reduced transition strength B(E2;21+→01+)=4.4(6) W.u. was determined, the first such value for an N=126 nucleus south of 208Pb, which is found to be slightly lower than that predicted by shell-model calculations. In addition, a collective octupole state was identified at an excitation energy of 2705 keV, for which a reduced B(E3) transition probability of 30−13+10 W.u. was extracted. These results are crucial for understanding both quadrupole and octupole collectivity in the vicinity of the heaviest doubly-magic nucleus 208Pb, and for benchmarking a number of theoretical approaches in this key region. This is of particular importance given the paucity of data on transition strengths in this region, which could be used, in principle, to test calculations relevant to the astrophysical r-process.

Abstract

We report on the first measurement of the half-lives of Kπ=11− and 12+ four-quasiparticle states in the even-even nucleus 178W. The sub-nanosecond half-lives were measured by applying the centroid shift method to data taken with LaBr3(Ce) scintillator detectors of the NuBall array at the ALTO facility in Orsay, France. The half-lives of these states only became experimentally accessible by the combination of several experimental techniques - scintillator fast timing, isomer spectroscopy with a pulsed beam, and the event-by-event calorimetry information provided by the NuBall array. The measured half-lives are 476(44)ps and 275(65)ps for the Iπ=11− and 12+ states, respectively. The decay transitions include weakly hindered E1 and E2 branches directly to the ground-state band, bypassing the two-quasiparticle states. This is the first such observation for an E1 transition. The interpretation of the small hindrance hinges on mixing between the ground-state band and the t-band.

Abstract

Sub-daily meteorological observations are needed for input to and assessment of high-resolution reanalysis products to improve understanding of weather and climate variability. While there are millions of such weather observations that have been collected by various organisations, many are yet to be transcribed into a useable format.Under the auspices of the Uncertainties in Ensembles of Regional ReAnalyses (UERRA) project, we describe the compilation and development of a digital dataset of 8.8 million meteorological observations of essential climate variables (ECVs) rescued across the European and southern Mediterranean region. By presenting the entire chain of data preparation, from the identification of regions lacking in digitised sub-daily data and the location of original sources, through the digitisation of the observations to the quality control procedures applied, we provide a rescued dataset that is as traceable as possible for use by the research community.Data from 127 stations and of 15 climate variables in the northern African and European sectors have been prepared for the period 1877 to 2012. Quality control of the data using a two-step semi-automatic statistical approach identified 3.5 % of observations that required correction or removal, on par with previous data rescue efforts.In addition to providing a new sub-daily meteorological dataset for the research community, our experience in the development of this sub-daily dataset gives us an opportunity to share some suggestions for future data rescue projects.All versions of the dataset, from the raw digitised data to data that have been quality controlled and converted to standard units, are available on PANGAEA: https://doi.org/10.1594/PANGAEA.886511 (Ashcroft et al., 2018).

6. Estimating 750 years of temperature variations and uncertainties in the Pyrenees by tree-ring reconstructions and climate simulations

Abstract

Past temperature variations are usually inferred from proxy data or estimated using general circulation models. Comparisons between climate estimations derived from proxy records and from model simulations help to better understand mechanisms driving climate variations, and also offer the possibility to identify deficiencies in both approaches. This paper presents regional temperature reconstructions based on tree-ring maximum density series in the Pyrenees, and compares them with the output of global simulations for this region and with regional climate model simulations conducted for the target region. An ensemble of 24 reconstructions of May-to-September regional mean temperature was derived from 22 maximum density tree-ring site chronologies distributed over the larger Pyrenees area. Four different tree-ring series standardization procedures were applied, combining two detrending methods: 300-yr spline and the regional curve standardization (RCS). Additionally, different methodological variants for the regional chronology were generated by using three different aggregation methods. Calibration verification trials were performed in split periods and using two methods: regression and a simple variance matching. The resulting set of temperature reconstructions was compared with climate simulations performed with global (ECHO-G) and regional (MM5) climate models. The 24 variants of May-to-September temperature reconstructions reveal a generally coherent pattern of inter-annual to multi-centennial temperature variations in the Pyrenees region for the last 750 yr. However, some reconstructions display a marked positive trend for the entire length of the reconstruction, pointing out that the application of the RCS method to a suboptimal set of samples may lead to unreliable results. Climate model simulations agree with the tree-ring based reconstructions at multi-decadal time scales, suggesting solar variability and volcanism as the main factors controlling preindustrial mean temperature variations in the Pyrenees. Nevertheless, the comparison also highlights differences with the reconstructions, mainly in the amplitude of past temperature variations and in the 20th century trends. Neither proxy-based reconstructions nor model simulations are able to perfectly track the temperature variations of the instrumental record, suggesting that both approximations still need further improvements.

7. Studies of the Immunomodulatory Effects of Statins Alone and in Combination with Immunosuppressive Drugs

Abstract

The effects of statins go beyond their lipid-lowering properties and include immunomodulatory and anti-inflammatory effects. Unfortunately, there is a lack of in vitro assays that study the immunomodulatory effect of statins at therapeutic concentrations and the possible synergism with immunosuppressive drugs. Besides, they are mostly evaluated on isolated peripheral blood mononuclear cells instead of using whole blood as a matrix. The aim of this study is to perform in vitro experiments to evaluate the effect of atorvastatin, simvastatin and fluvastatin at therapeutic concentrations alone and in combination with everolimus or tacrolimus on immunosuppressive response, using whole blood as a matrix by investigating lymphocyte proliferation and production of the soluble cytokines interleukin (IL)-2, IL-10 and interferon (IFN)-γ. Statins (0.1 μM) inhibited T cell proliferation by 12–16% in a dose-dependent manner and when statins at 0.1 μM were combined with each immunosuppressive drug at 8 ng/ml, inhibition increased by 6–9% (p

9. Affective evaluation of consciously perceived emotional faces reveals a 'correct attribution effect'

Abstract

The strength of the affective priming effect is influenced by various factors, including the duration of the prime. Surprisingly, short-duration primes that are around the threshold for conscious awareness typically result in stronger effects compared to long-duration primes. The misattribution effect theory suggest that subliminal primes do not provide sufficient cognitive processing time for the affective feeling to be attributed to the prime. Instead, the neutral target being evaluated is credited for the affective experience. In everyday social interactions, we shift our gaze from one face to another, typically contemplating each face for only a few seconds. It is reasonable to assume that no affective priming takes place during such interactions. To investigate whether this is indeed the case, participants were asked to rate the valence of faces displayed one by one. Each face image simultaneously served as both a target (primed by the previous trial) and a prime (for the next trial). Depending on the participant’s response time, images were typically displayed for about 1–2 s. As predicted by the misattribution effect theory, neutral targets were not affected by positive affective priming. However, non-neutral targets showed a robust priming effect, with emotional faces being perceived as even more negative or positive when the previously seen face was emotionally congruent. These results suggest that a “correct attribution effect” modulates how we perceive faces, continuously impacting our social interactions. Given the importance of faces in social communication, these findings have wide-ranging implications.

Abstract

Abstract Due to spatial scarcity and uncertainties in sediment data, initial and boundary conditions in deep-time climate simulations are not well constrained. On the other hand, depending on these conditions, feedback mechanisms in the climate system compete and balance differently. This opens up the possibility to obtain multiple steady states in numerical experiments. Here, we use the MIT general circulation model to explore the existence of such alternative steady states around the Permian–Triassic Boundary (PTB). We construct the corresponding bifurcation diagram, taking into account processes on a timescale of thousands of years, in order to identify the stability range of the steady states and tipping points as the atmospheric CO2 content is varied. We find three alternative steady states with a difference in global mean surface air temperature of about 10 °C. We also examine how these climatic steady states are modified when feedbacks operating on comparable or longer time scales are included, namely vegetation dynamics and air-sea carbon exchanges. Our findings on multistability provide a useful framework for explaining the climatic variations observed in the Early Triassic geological record, as well as some discrepancies between numerical simulations in the literature and geological data at PTB and its aftermath.

Abstract

Aims We aimed at assessing the effectiveness of renal replacement therapy in patients severely self-poisoned with baclofen and with normal kidney function. Methods A population pharmacokinetic model was built using analytical data extracted from 26 baclofen poisoning cases reported to a French Poison Centre: 8 patients underwent renal replacement therapy (RRT), 18 did not. In the RRT group, 2 patients suffered from kidney failure. Mechanical ventilation was required for 20 patients with normal kidney function; 15 were not treated by RRT and 5 were. Pharmacokinetic profiles of baclofen were measured in 28 patients and further modelled by a non-parametric approach (PMetrics®). The total data set was divided into a building data set (26 patients, 57 observations) and a validation set (2 external patients, 6 observations). Then, the estimated elimination half-life of baclofen and the duration of intubation were compared in patients with or without RRT using Wilcoxon–Mann–Whitney test. Results A model using three parameters plus a lag time and bioavailability was necessary to determine the pharmacokinetics of baclofen. Estimated elimination half-life in the ‘RRT’ group and the ‘no RRT’ group were respectively 3.1 [2.2−4.8] h (n = 6 patients) and 3.4 [1.4−5.5] h (n = 19 patients, p = 0.53). The median duration of intubation was not significantly different between groups (72 [48−72] h and 72 [24−96] h, respectively; p = 0.38). Conclusion Renal replacement therapy did not appear to significantly increase baclofen clearance in patients without kidney failure.

Abstract

Ovarian cancer is the most lethal gynaecological cancer in very-high-human-developmentindex regions. Ovarian cancer incidence and mortality rates are estimated to globally rise by 2035, although incidence and mortality rates depend on the region and prevalence of the associated risk factors. The aim of this study is to assess changes in incidence and mortality of ovarian cancer in Catalonia by 2030. Bayesian autoregressive age–period–cohort models were used to predict the burden of OC incidence and mortality rates for the 2015–2030 period. Incidence and mortality rates of ovarian cancer are expected to decline in Catalonia by 2030 in women ≥ 45 years of age. A decrease in ovarian-cancer risk was observed with increasing year of birth, with a rebound in women born in the 1980s. A decrease in mortality was observed for the period of diagnosis and period of death. Nevertheless, ovarian-cancer mortality remains higher among older women compared to other age groups. Our study summarizes the most plausible scenario for ovarian-cancer changes in terms of incidence and mortality in Catalonia by 2030, which may be of interest from a public health perspective for policy implementation.

En 2002 la MPFT decrit le plus ancien Hominini (la famille Humaine tribu sœur des Panini, les chimpanzes) Sahelanthropus tchadensis dit « Toumai » (7 Ma) bipede par l’anatomie de son crâne tandis que la sedimentologie et l’assemblage faunique associe temoignent d’un paysage mosaique compose de lacs, marecages, forets, bosquets, savanes arborees et prairies herbeuses. Le crâne et la denture presentent une association unique de caracteres primitifs et derives qui montrent clairement leur appartenance aux Hominini, et non aux grands singes africains, mais temporellement proche de leur dernier ancetre commun. Ces plus anciens pre-humains avaient une repartition geographique non restreinte a l’Afrique orientale et australe mais plus large incluant au moins l’Afrique tropicale centrale et sahelienne.

Abstract

Direct lifetime measurements via gamma -gamma coincidences using a fast timing detector array consisting of LaBr3(Ce) scintillators has been applied to determine the lifetime of low-lying states in the semimagic (N = 50) nucleus Ru-94. The experiment was carried out as the first in a series of "FAIR-0" experiments with the DESPEC experimental setup at the Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research (FAIR). Excited states in Ru-94 were populated primarily via the beta-delayed proton emission of Pd-95 nuclei, produced in the projectile fragmentation of an 850 MeV/nucleon Xe-124 beam impinging on a 4 g/cm(2) Be-9 target. While the deduced E2 strength for the 2(+) -> 0(+) transition in the yrast cascade follows the expected behavior for conserved seniority symmetry, the intermediate 4(+) -> 2(+) transition exhibits a drastic enhancement of transition strength in comparison with pure-seniority model predictions as well as standard shell model predictions in the f pg proton hole space with respect to doubly magic Sn-100. The anomalous behavior is ascribed to a subtle interference between the wave function of the lowest seniority v = 2, I-pi = 4(+) state and that of a close-lying v = 4 state that exhibits partial dynamic symmetry. In addition, the observed strongly prohibitive 6(+) -> 4(+) transition can be attributed to the same mechanism but with a destructive interference. It is noted that such effects may provide stringent tests of the nucleon-nucleon interactions employed in state-of-the-art theoretical model calculations.

Abstract

Deexcitation $\ensuremath{\gamma}$ rays associated with an isomeric state of $^{186}\mathrm{Ta}$ were investigated. The isomers were produced in multinucleon transfer reactions between a $^{136}\mathrm{Xe}$ beam and a natural W target and were collected and separated by the KEK Isotope Separation System. Two $\ensuremath{\gamma}$ transitions with energies of 161.1(2) and 186.8(1) keV associated with an isomeric decay were observed for the first time. The half-life of the isomeric state of the neutral atom $^{186\mathrm{m}}\mathrm{Ta}$ was deduced as 17(2) s. Based on the comparison with the previous measurements of the isomeric state using the Experimental Storage Ring at GSI Darmstadt and the coupling of angular momenta of individual particle orbitals in odd-odd nuclei, a decay scheme of $^{186\mathrm{m}}\mathrm{Ta}$ was proposed.

Abstract

The availability of 3D Geospatial information is a key issue for many expanding sectors such as autonomous vehicles, business intelligence and urban planning. Its production is now possible thanks to the abundance of available data (Earth observation satellite constellations, insitu data, …) but manual interventions are still needed to guarantee a high level of quality, which prevents mass production. New artificial intelligence and big data technologies adapted to 3D imagery can help to remove these obstacles. The AI4GEO project aims at developing an automatic solution for producing 3D geospatial information and new added-value services. This paper will first introduce AI4GEO initiative, context and overall objectives. It will then present the current status of the project and in particular it will focus on the innovative platform put in place to handle big 3D datasets for analytics needs and it will present the first results of 3D semantic segmentations and associated perspectives.

Abstract

Previous studies have found it is more difficult identifying an emotional expression displayed by an older than a younger face. It is unknown whether this is caused by age-related changes such as wrinkles and folds interfering with perception, or by the aging of facial muscles, potentially reducing the ability of older individuals to display an interpretable expression. To discriminate between these two possibilities, participants attempted to identify facial expressions under different conditions. To control for the variables (wrinkles/folds vs facial muscles), we used Generative Adversarial Networks to make faces look older or younger. Based upon behavior data collected from 28 individuals, our model predicts that the odds of correctly identifying the expressed emotion of a face reduced 16.2% when younger faces (condition 1) are artificially aged (condition 3). Replacing the younger faces with natural old-looking faces (Condition 2), however, results in an even stronger effect (odds of correct identification decreased by 50.9%). Counterintuitively, making old faces (Condition 2) look young (Condition 4) results in the largest negative effect (odds of correct identification decreased by 74.8% compared with natural young faces). Taken together, these results suggest that both age-related decline in the facial muscles’ ability to express facial emotions and age-related physical changes in the face, explain why it is difficult to recognize facial expressions from older faces; the effect of the former, however, is much stronger than that of the latter. Facial muscle exercises, therefore, might improve the capacity to convey facial emotional expressions in the elderly.

Abstract

Many studies have reported visual cortical gamma-band activity related to stimulus processing and cognition. Most respective studies used artificial stimuli, and the few studies that used natural stimuli disagree. Electrocorticographic (ECoG) recordings from awake macaque areas V1 and V4 found gamma to be abundant during free viewing of natural images. In contrast, a study using ECoG recordings from V1 of human patients reported that many natural images induce no gamma and concluded that it is not necessary for seeing. To reconcile these apparently disparate findings, we reanalyzed those same human ECoG data recorded during presentation of natural images. We find that the strength of gamma is positively correlated with different image-computable metrics of image structure. This holds independently of the precise metric used to quantify gamma. In fact, an average of previously used gamma metrics reflects image structure most robustly. Gamma was sufficiently diagnostic of image structure to differentiate between any possible pair of images with >70% accuracy. Thus, while gamma might be weak for some natural images, the graded strength of gamma reflects the graded degree of image structure, and thereby conveys functionally relevant stimulus properties.

Abstract

The structure of Po-208 populated through the EC/beta(+) decay of At-208 is investigated using gamma-ray spectroscopy at the ISOLDE Decay Station. The presented level scheme contains 27 new excited states and 43 new transitions, as well as a further 50 previously observed. rays which have been (re)assigned a position. The level scheme is compared to shell model calculations. Through this analysis approximately half of the beta-decay strength of At-208 is found to proceed via allowed decay and half via first-forbidden decay. The first-forbidden transitions predominantly populate core excited states at high excitation energies, which is qualitatively understood using shell model considerations. This mass region provides an excellent testing ground for the competition between allowed and first-forbidden beta-decay calculations, important for the detailed understanding of the nucleosynthesis of heavy elements.

Abstract

Two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenides are used as electroactive materials for electrochemical and electrocatalytic applications. However, it remains unclear how transition metal dichalcogenide thickness influences the electrochemical response measured at its surface. We use scanning electrochemical cell microscopy to assess the electrochemical response of different thicknesses of bottom-contacted MoS2, MoSe2, WS2, and WSe2 towards the simple outer-sphere redox couple [Ru(NH3)6]3+/2+ with submicron spatial resolution. A detailed analysis, coupling mass transport and electrochemical kinetics, reveals that the electrochemical response can be described using an electron tunneling barrier, which scales with the band gap of the two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenide. Our results suggest that interpretation of the electrochemical and electrocatalytic responses on transition metal dichalcogenide-covered electrodes should account for the through-layer electron transport kinetics.

Abstract

Climate tipping elements are large-scale subsystems of the Earth that may transgress critical thresholds (tipping points) under ongoing global warming, with substantial impacts on the biosphere and human societies. Frequently studied examples of such tipping elements include the Greenland Ice Sheet, the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC), permafrost, monsoon systems, and the Amazon rainforest. While recent scientific efforts have improved our knowledge about individual tipping elements, the interactions between them are less well understood. Also, the potential of individual tipping events to induce additional tipping elsewhere or stabilize other tipping elements is largely unknown. Here, we map out the current state of the literature on the interactions between climate tipping elements and review the influences between them. To do so, we gathered evidence from model simulations, observations, and conceptual understanding, as well as examples of paleoclimate reconstructions where multi-component or spatially propagating transitions were potentially at play. While uncertainties are large, we find indications that many of the interactions between tipping elements are destabilizing. Therefore, we conclude that tipping elements should not only be studied in isolation, but also more emphasis has to be put on potential interactions. This means that tipping cascades cannot be ruled out on centennial to millennial timescales at global warming levels between 1.5 and 2.0 ∘C or on shorter timescales if global warming surpassed 2.0 ∘C. At these higher levels of global warming, tipping cascades may then include fast tipping elements such as the AMOC or the Amazon rainforest. To address crucial knowledge gaps in tipping element interactions, we propose four strategies combining observation-based approaches, Earth system modeling expertise, computational advances, and expert knowledge.

Abstract

The Module-0 Demonstrator is a single-phase 600 kg liquid argon time projection chamber operated as a prototype for the DUNE liquid argon near detector. Based on the ArgonCube design concept, Module-0 features a novel 80k-channel pixelated charge readout and advanced high-coverage photon detection system. In this paper, we present an analysis of an eight-day data set consisting of 25 million cosmic ray events collected in the spring of 2021. We use this sample to demonstrate the imaging performance of the charge and light readout systems as well as the signal correlations between the two. We also report argon purity and detector uniformity measurements and provide comparisons to detector simulations.

Abstract

Mass-separated ${^{187}\mathrm{Ta}}_{114}$ in a high-spin isomeric state has been produced for the first time by multinucleon transfer reactions, employing an argon gas-stopping cell and laser ionization. Internal $\ensuremath{\gamma}$ rays revealed a ${T}_{1/2}=7.3\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.9\text{ }\text{ }\mathrm{s}$ isomer at $1778\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}1\text{ }\text{ }\mathrm{keV}$, which decays through a rotational band with perturbations associated with the approach to a prolate-oblate shape transition. Model calculations show less influence from triaxiality compared to heavier elements in the same mass region. The isomer-decay reduced $E2$ hindrance factor ${f}_{\ensuremath{\nu}}=27\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}1$ supports the interpretation that axial symmetry is approximately conserved.

Abstract

The β decay of 207Hg into the single-proton-hole nucleus 207Tl has been studied through γ-ray spectroscopy at the ISOLDE Decay Station (IDS) with the aim of identifying states resulting from coupling of the πs−11/2, πd−13/2, and πh−111/2 shell model orbitals to the collective octupole vibration. Twenty-two states were observed lying between 2.6 and 4.0 MeV, eleven of which were observed for the first time, and 78 new transitions were placed. Two octupole states (s1/2-coupled) are identified and three more states (d3/2-coupled) are tentatively assigned using spin-parity inferences, while further h11/2-coupled states may also have been observed for the first time. Comparisons are made with state-of-the-art large-scale shell model calculations and previous observations made in this region, and systematic underestimation of the energy of the octupole vibrational states is noted. We suggest that in order to resolve the difference in predicted energies for collective and noncollective t=1 states (t is the number of nucleons breaking the 208Pb core), the effect of t=2 mixing may be reduced for octupole-coupled states. The inclusion of mixing with t=0,2,3 excitations is necessary to replicate all t=1 state energies accurately.

Abstract

We report on the measurement of lifetimes of excited states in the near-mid-shell nuclei Dy164,166 using the gamma-ray coincidence fast-timing method. The nuclei of interest were populated using reactions between an O18 beam and a gold-backed isotopically enriched Dy164 target of thickness 6.3mg/cm2 at primary beam energies of 71, 76, and 80 MeV from the IPN-Orsay laboratory, France. Excited states were populated in Dy164, Dy166, and W178,179 following Coulomb excitation, inelastic nuclear scattering, two-neutron transfer, and fusion-evaporation reaction channels respectively. Gamma rays from excited states were measured using the ν-Ball high-purity germanium (HPGe)-LaBr3 hybrid γ-ray spectrometer with the excited state lifetimes extracted using the fast-timing coincidence method using HPGe-gated LaBr3-LaBr3 triple coincident events. The lifetime of the first Iπ=2+ excited state in Dy166 was used to determine the transition quadrupole deformation of this neutron-rich nucleus for the first time. The experimental methodology was validated by showing consistency with previously determined excited state lifetimes in Dy164. The half-lives of the yrast 2+ states in Dy164 and Dy166 were 2.35(6) and 2.3(2) ns, respectively, corresponding to transition quadrupole moment values of Q0=7.58(9) and 7.5(4) eb, respectively. The lifetime of the yrast 2+ state in Dy166 is consistent with a quenching of nuclear quadrupole deformation at β≈0.35 as the N=104 mid-shell is approached.

Abstract

We report on the first measurement of the half-lives of K-pi = 11(-) and 12(+) four-quasiparticle states in the even-even nucleus W-178. The sub-nanosecond half-lives were measured by applying the centroid shift method to data taken with LaBr3(Ce) scintillator detectors of the NuBall array at the ALTO facility in Orsay, France. The half-lives of these states only became experimentally accessible by the combination of several experimental techniques - scintillator fast timing, isomer spectroscopy with a pulsed beam, and the event-by-event calorimetry information provided by the NuBall array. The measured half-lives are 476(44)ps and 275(65)ps for the I-pi = 11(-) and 12(+) states, respectively. The decay transitions include weakly hindered E1 and E2 branches directly to the ground-state band, bypassing the two-quasiparticle states. This is the first such observation for an E1 transition. The interpretation of the small hindrance hinges on mixing between the ground-state band and the t-band. (C) 2019 The Author(s). Published by Elsevier B.V.

Resume L’escalade est passee en une vingtaine d’annees du statut de sport confidentiel a celui d’activite en vogue pratiquee occasionnellement par plus d’un million de Francais. Les doigts representent la zone anatomique la plus touchee. Les ruptures aigues des poulies digitales, favorisees par l’utilisation de prehensions arquees, constituent les lesions les plus frequentes. Des atteintes chroniques avec epaississement douloureux de ces poulies et des tendons flechisseurs sont egalement rencontrees. L’utilisation de prises « mono-doigts » peut etre a l’origine d’une atteinte rare : la dechirure des muscles lombricaux mediaux. Chez les grimpeurs adolescents il faudra savoir depister la fracture de fatigue epiphysaire de la base de la deuxieme phalange. Enfin apres des annees de pratique des modifications osseuses sont frequemment observees : epaississement des corticales phalangiennes, osteophytes.

Abstract

Aims Baclofen has gained interest in treating alcohol use disorder patients. These patients are at risk of voluntary drug intoxications. Understanding the context of baclofen's widespread use for alcohol use disorder, a recent evaluation of the epidemiology, morbidity and mortality of baclofen self-poisoning episodes is necessary. Methods All baclofen self-poisoning reported to the Western France Poison Control Centre between January 2008 and December 2015 were included for analysis in this retrospective study. Baclofen poisoning cases were compared to the 31,859 non-baclofen voluntary poisoning cases declared over the same period. Results Number of baclofen poisoning grew from 8 cases in 2008 to 91 cases in 2015, attributable to patients purposely treated for alcohol use disorder. Overall, 190 cases were considered: 111 patients (59%) had Glasgow coma score (GCS) ≤12 at hospital admission and 77 had GCS > 12 (41%). Eighty patients required mechanical ventilation (42.6%). Neurological severity (GCS ≤ 12) was associated with seizures (n = 24, 22% vs. n = 2, 3%, P < 0.001). Two patients were deceased at first medical evaluation and three died in the hospital (mortality rate 2.6%). Non-baclofen cases had lower rate of endotracheal intubation (n = 1833, 6%, P < 0.001) and mortality rate (n = 299, 0.1%, P = 0.02). Conclusions Baclofen self-poisoning cases has risen in recent years due to baclofen intake for alcohol use disorder therapies. The risk-benefit ratio may be evaluated before baclofen is safely prescribed.

Abstract

SummaryCohesin’s association with chromosomes is determined by loading dependent on the Scc2/4 complex and release due to Wapl. We show here that Scc2/4 is not merely a loading complex and that it actively maintains cohesin on chromosomes during G1. It does so by blocking a Wapl-independent release reaction that requires opening the cohesin ring at its Smc3/Scc1 interface as well as the D loop of Smc1’s ATPase. The Wapl-independent release mechanism is switched off as cells activate Cdk1 and enter G2/M and cannot be turned back on without cohesin’s dissociation from chromosomes. The latter phenomenon enabled us to show that cohesin that has already captured DNA in a Scc2-dependent manner before replication no longer requires Scc2 to capture sister DNAs during S phase.

Abstract

The reaction of a pulsed 18O beam on a 164Dy target was studied in the first experiment with the NuBall array at the IPN Orsay, France. Excited state half-lives were measured using the fast timing method with 20 LaBr3(Ce) detectors. The timing characteristics of the fully digital acquisition system is briefly discussed. A value for the previously unknown half-life of the first excited 4+ state in 178W is presented.

The γ rays produced were detected using the newly-constructed ν-Ball spectrometer which comprised of HPGe and LaBr3(Ce) detectors. This conference paper describes the methodology and effectiveness of multiplicity/sum-energy gating, for channel selection between fusion evaporation events and lower multiplicity/energy events from inelastic nuclear scattering and Coulomb excitation of the target, and from two-neutron transfer reactions to 166Dy.

Abstract

Abstract The Pandora Software Development Kit and algorithm libraries provide pattern-recognition logic essential to the reconstruction of particle interactions in liquid argon time projection chamber detectors. Pandora is the primary event reconstruction software used at ProtoDUNE-SP, a prototype for the Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment far detector. ProtoDUNE-SP, located at CERN, is exposed to a charged-particle test beam. This paper gives an overview of the Pandora reconstruction algorithms and how they have been tailored for use at ProtoDUNE-SP. In complex events with numerous cosmic-ray and beam background particles, the simulated reconstruction and identification efficiency for triggered test-beam particles is above 80% for the majority of particle type and beam momentum combinations. Specifically, simulated 1 GeV/c charged pions and protons are correctly reconstructed and identified with efficiencies of 86.1 $$\pm 0.6$$ ± 0.6 % and 84.1 $$\pm 0.6$$ ± 0.6 %, respectively. The efficiencies measured for test-beam data are shown to be within 5% of those predicted by the simulation.

Abstract

Performing different tasks, such as generating motor movements or processing sensory input, requires the recruitment of specific networks of neuronal populations. Previous studies suggested that power variations in the alpha band (8-12Hz) may implement such recruitment of task-specific populations by increasing cortical excitability in task-related areas while inhibiting population-level cortical activity in task-unrelated areas (Klimesch et al., 2007; Jensen and Mazaheri, 2010). However, the precise temporal and spatial relationships between the modulatory function implemented by alpha oscillations and population-level cortical activity remained undefined. Furthermore, while several studies suggested that alpha power indexes task-related populations across large and spatially separated cortical areas, it was largely unclear whether alpha power also differentially indexes smaller networks of task-related neuronal populations. Here we addressed these questions by investigating the temporal and spatial relationships of electrocorticographic (ECoG) power modulations in the alpha band and in the broadband gamma range (70-170Hz, indexing population-level activity) during auditory and motor tasks in five human subjects and one macaque monkey. In line with previous research, our results confirm that broadband gamma power accurately tracks task-related behavior and that alpha power decreases in task-related areas. More importantly, they demonstrate that alpha power suppression lags population-level activity in auditory areas during the auditory task, but precedes it in motor areas during the motor task. This suppression of alpha power in task-related areas was accompanied by an increase in areas not related to the task. In addition, we show for the first time that these differential modulations of alpha power could be observed not only across widely distributed systems (e.g., motor vs. auditory system), but also within the auditory system. Specifically, alpha power was suppressed in the locations within the auditory system that most robustly responded to particular sound stimuli. Altogether, our results provide experimental evidence for a mechanism that preferentially recruits task-related neuronal populations by increasing cortical excitability in task-related cortical areas and decreasing cortical excitability in task-unrelated areas. This mechanism is implemented by variations in alpha power and is common to humans and the non-human primate under study. These results contribute to an increasingly refined understanding of the mechanisms underlying the selection of the specific neuronal populations required for task execution.

Resume Les enterobacteries productrices de beta-lactamases a spectre elargi (EBLSE) sont, depuis leur premiere description dans les annees 1980, devenues endemiques dans les hopitaux du monde. Le caractere commensal de ces bacteries et le support genetique plasmidique (i.e., mobile) du mecanisme de resistance ont permis leur diffusion a tres grande echelle, cette derniere facilitee par les consommations croissantes d’antibiotiques (notamment des cephalosporines de 3e generation [C3G] et des fluoroquinolones [FQ]). La presence reguliere de co-resistances, le nombre de beta-lactamines hydrolysees et la frequence des infections liees aux enterobacteries en font un redoutable adversaire en termes de maladie infectieuse. Tous les secteurs de soins sont touches, notamment ceux cumulant charge en soin et pression de selection antibiotique. Ainsi dans les secteurs d’oncologie et d’hematologie, ce phenomene est particulierement inquietant du fait de l’immunodepression des patients les exposant a un sur risque d’infections secondaires. Au travers de cette revue, nous allons retracer l’historique de la resistance, aborder les donnees epidemiologiques recentes et tenter de definir les facteurs de risque d’acquisition d’EBLSE en oncopediatrie. Enfin, nous aborderons les moyens de prevention et de traitement.

Abstract

Landslides are common features in the vicinity of volcanic islands. In this contribution, we investigate landslides emplacement and dynamics around the volcanic island of Martinique based on the first scientific drilling of such deposits. The evolution of the active Montagne Pelee volcano on this island has been marked by three major flank-collapses that removed much of the western flank of the volcano. Subaerial collapse volumes vary from 2 to 25 km3 and debris avalanches flowed into the Grenada Basin. High-resolution seismic data (AGUADOMAR-1999, CARAVAL-2002, and GWADASEIS-2009) is combined with new drill cores that penetrate up to 430 m through the three submarine landslide deposits previously associated to the aerial flank-collapses (Site U1399, Site U1400, Site U1401, IODP Expedition 340, Joides Resolution, March–April 2012). This combined geophysical and core data provide an improved understanding of landslide processes offshore a volcanic island. The integrated analysis shows a large submarine landslide deposit, without debris avalanche deposits coming from the volcano, comprising up to 300 km3 of remobilized seafloor sediment that extends for 70 km away from the coast and covers an area of 2100 km2. Our new data suggest that the aerial debris avalanche deposit enter the sea but stop at the base of submarine flank. We propose a new model dealing with seafloor sediment failures and landslide propagation mechanisms, triggered by volcanic flank-collapse events affecting Montagne Pelee volcano. Newly recognized landslide deposits occur deeper in the stratigraphy, suggesting the recurrence of large-scale mass-wasting processes offshore the island and thus, the necessity to better assess the associated tsunami hazards in the region.

Abstract

No formal studies have reported how glasses influence age perception, except for a London Vision Clinic survey that found that people over 45 look 5 or more years older when wearing eyeglasses. To investigate the effect of eyeglasses and sunglasses on age perception while controlling for age and interpersonal differences, we digitally manipulated the photographs of faces of 50 young adults, to create two age conditions (young and old) and three eyewear conditions (no glasses, eyeglasses, and sunglasses). Participants then estimated the age of the faces, displayed in random order. Contrary to the generally accepted beliefs that wearing eyeglasses makes you look older and wearing sunglasses make you look younger, our results suggest that the effect of glasses on age perception is rather small.

Abstract

Most household and body soaps have an alkaline pH (9-12). In addition to their foaming effect, they irritate the skin. This study aims to review soap exposure reported to the Angers Poison Control Centre.A retrospective study of accidental or deliberate oral exposure to solid soaps reported to the Angers Poison Control Centre between 1 January 2000 and 1 April 2015. Poisoning severity was reassessed for each case according to the Poisoning Severity Score (PSS).553 cases of exposure were recorded. In more than 40% of cases (n = 226), exposure occurred in community settings (retirement homes, nursing homes). Patients had a history of dementia in 220 cases (40%). The most common symptoms were labial oedema (28%, n = 153), oropharyngeal irritation (10%, n = 56), salivation (10%, n = 53), vomiting (9%, n = 48) and cough (8%, n = 45). Among symptomatic patients (n = 276), one patient died from aspiration pneumonia and one patient died from a cardiogenic shock following oropharyngeal oedema, vomiting, cough and bronchial obstruction. Patients with dementia were more often symptomatic (75% vs 34%, p .001) and more frequently hospitalised (22% vs 0.8%, p .001). They experienced more moderate to severe symptoms (8% vs 0%, p .001). Mildly severe (PSS2, n = 14), highly severe (PSS3, n = 1) and fatal (PSS4, n = 2) poisoning were observed only in patients with dementia.Ingestion of soap bars is potentially serious, especially in patients with dementia. This type of soap should not be available to them in community settings and close monitoring should be considered in the event of oral exposure.

Abstract

International audience; OBJECTIVE: We report two cases of elevated digoxin plasma levels in patients receiving enzalutamide. Cases reported: The first patient, an 84-year-old male treated with enzalutamide, was hospitalized due to deterioration in his general state. Atrial fibrillation was discovered and treatment with digoxin was initiated. Supratherapeutic digoxin concentrations (4 µg/L and 3.5 µg/L 3 days later) led to treatment being stopped despite the lack of clinical or biological signs of overdose. The second patient, an 84-year-old male treated with digoxin and enzalutamide, was hospitalized for the same reasons. Digoxin concentration upon admission was 2.8 μg/L. Despite stopping treatment, digoxin blood levels were observed to have increased on D3 and D7 following admission (3 and 3.6 μg/L, respectively). However, no clinical or biological findings indicated an overdose. Blood samples were sent to the Pharmacology and Toxicology Laboratory for analysis.METHODS: The second patient's digoxin plasma level was determined using the chemiluminescent microparticle immunoassay (CMIA®, Abbott, Illinois) method. Enzalutamide levels were determined using HPLC-UV/DAD method. An interference study was performed using different assay methods by adding enzalutamide to control plasma at various concentrations from a Xtandi (40mg) capsule.RESULTS: Plasma concentration of digoxin at D7 for patient 2 was identical in both laboratories (3.5 vs. 3.6 µg/L). Enzalutamide was found in the patient's plasma (12,5 mg/L). Adding 4, 10, 20, and 40 mg/L of enzalutamide to the untreated plasma showed that the plasma concentration of digoxin was positive (from 0.35 to 3.69 µg/L) using the CMIA method.CONCLUSIONS: Our results highlight the analytical interferences of enzalutamide with digoxin assays using the CMIA method.
