Peritoneal dialysis (PD) patients are at high risk for peritonitis, an infection of the peritoneum that affects 13% of PD users annually. Relying on subjective peritonitis symptoms results in delayed treatment, leading to high hospitalisation costs, peritoneal scarring, and premature transition to haemodialysis. We have developed and tested a low-cost, easy-to-use technology that uses microscopy and image analysis to screen for peritonitis across the effluent drain tube. Compared to other technologies, our prototype is made from off-the-shelf, low-cost materials. It can be set up quickly and key stakeholders believe it can improve the overall PD experience. We demonstrate that our prototype classifies infection-indicating and healthy white blood cell levels in clinically collected patient effluent with 94% accuracy. Integration of our technology into PD setups as a screening tool for peritonitis would enable earlier physician notification, allowing for prompt diagnosis and treatment to prevent hospitalisations, reduce scarring, and increase PD longevity. Our findings demonstrate the versatility of microscopy and image analysis for infection screening and are a proof of principle for their future applications in health care.

Background To circumvent Warburg effect, several clinical trials for different cancers are utilising a combinatorial approach using metabolic reprogramming and chemotherapeutic agents including metformin. The majority of these metabolic interventions work via indirectly activating AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) to alter cellular metabolism in favour of oxidative phosphorylation over aerobic glycolysis. The effect of these drugs is dependent on glycaemic and insulin conditions. Therefore, development of small molecules, which can activate AMPK, irrespective of the energy state, may be a better approach for triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) treatment. Methods Therapeutic effect of SU212 on TNBC cells was examined using in vitro and in vivo models. Results We developed and characterised the efficacy of novel AMPK activator (SU212) that selectively induces oxidative phosphorylation and decreases glycolysis in TNBC cells, while not affecting these pathways in normal cells. SU212 accomplished this metabolic reprogramming by activating AMPK independent of energy stress and irrespective of the glycaemic/insulin state. This leads to mitotic phase arrest and apoptosis in TNBC cells. In vivo, SU212 inhibits tumour growth, cancer progression and metastasis. Conclusions SU212 directly activates AMPK in TNBC cells, but does not hamper glucose metabolism in normal cells. Our study provides compelling preclinical data for further development of SU212 for the treatment of TNBC.

International audience; The boiling liquid expanding vapour explosion (BLEVE) is well known but not well understood. Some still argue about what comes first, the BLEVE or the vessel rupture. Some believe the BLEVE is triggered by some pressure transient inside the vessel and this causes a superheat limit explosion which causes the vessel to rupture. Others believe it is the vessel rupture by some weakening process that leads to the BLEVE. This paper will provide evidence that the latter description that is correct for most, if not all BLEVEs observed in practice. This paper describes small scale experiments of aluminum tubes that were weakened by machining a thinned wall area over a specified length. The tubes were filled to a desired level with liquid propane and then the propane was uniformly heated electrically until the tubes failed. The failure pressures ranged from 10 to 33 bar. The tube was instrumented to capture failure characteristics (pressure, temperature) and consequences: blast overpressure and imaging of the propane cloud and shock around the vessel; ground force under it; transient pressure and imaging of the boiling process inside the vessel. The work was done to improve our understanding of the fluid – structure interactions during the fire heat induced failure of a pressure vessel holding a pressure liquefied gas. We were specifically interested in the near field hazards including blast overpressure and ground force. This paper will focus on the early milliseconds of the process where the vessel begins to open and a shock wave is formed and moves out into the surroundings. The imaging reveals presence of a Mach shock at the exit of the vessel at the early stage of the opening. A chronology of the event also shows that the lead shock is generated early in the explosion process, and is long gone before the liquid starts boiling, arguing that vapour expansion is the main contributor to the first shock overpressure.

International audience; The ground force generated by a BLEVE is a hazard that has been seldom studied, even though BLEVE has been source of many research works in the past decades. However, emergency responders have been asking questions the risk and consequences of a BLEVE on a bridge and other critical infrastructures for a while, with no answer so far. Moreover, a tank truck accident in Bologna in August 2018 has shown that bridge collapse may result from such scenario.This paper presents the experimental work done with a small scale apparatus reproducing realistic BLEVE failure with a cylindrical tube. Load cells were placed under the base plate holding the tube to measure the local ground force generated by the explosion. Forces from 10 kN to 55 kN were measured for a 50 mm diameter tube with 300 mm length failing at pressures from 10 to 32 Bar. The ground force signals are interpreted together with the imaging and internal pressure signal. The synchronization between violent boiling, repressurization in the vessel and strong ground force is clear through this comparison. Different ground force signals were observed depending on the fill level and weakened length of the tube. The maximum ground force and impulse vary almost linearly with failure pressure and liquid fill level. It is less clear for the influence of weakened/opening length of the tube. More data is required to conclude on this parameter influence.

The availability of accurate and robust models for the prediction of the behavior of pressurized tanks under fire exposure is a key requirement to improve the design of fire protection systems. Most of the models present in the literature take into consideration fully engulfing pool fire scenarios only. In the present study, a CFD modelling approach previously validated against full engulfing pool fire tests is used to simulate partial engulfment conditions. The model allowed analyzing local flow field promoting thermal stratification, which in turn drives internal pressurization of the tank. Comparison with fire test results shows good agreement with experimental measurements both in terms of temperature and pressurization curves. The results obtained represent a valuable source of information to support risk management, planning of emergency response and improve fire protection systems design.

Fire exposure of storage and transportation vessels of hazardous materials (including pressure liquefied gases) can result in BLEVEs and other high-consequence incidents with large societal and economic impacts. To reduce risk most countries have numerous regulations, codes of practice and guidance notes covering the design, operation and maintenance of vessels and thermal protection systems. Yet despite such regulations there remains no internationally accepted fire test procedure for pressure vessel and accompanying thermal protection systems that is capable of meeting a range of regulatory requirements. This paper considers some of the regulations in place in the western world and considers the origin of these based on large and medium-scale testing conducted to date. It examines conditions found in these tests to propose a set of recommendations on which to base a standard method of test. These recommendations are proposed as being representative of a credible large pool fire scenario that may occur.

International audience; The near-field hazards from BLEVE including blast, ground force, drag loading from the rapid liquid phase change and projectiles. There are several correlations available in the literature for the far field blast overpressure from a BLEVE, usually requiring the calculation of the available expansion energy and the application of correction factors. However, there is very little information available for near-field effects and how this is affected by the details of vessel failure. This work presents near-field blast overpressure data and prediction models to fill in this gap. First, experimental measurements of overpressure in the near-field of a small scale cylindrical controlled BLEVE experiments with propane (V = 0.6 L, d =50 mm, L = 300 mm) were performed. Then, this work establishes a prediction model based solely on the vapour phase properties at failure, using shock tube overpressure prediction and spherical shock propagation models. The model predicts well the strongest tests and is conservative with all the others. Scaling the model up to larger scale experimental data from literature shows that it is transposable, proposing a simple physics-based prediction model for BLEVE overpressure.

Fires may induce the thermal failure of LPG storage and transport vessels, leading to severe escalation scenarios. In the present study, an innovative CFD modeling approach was developed to investigate the thermal behavior of LPG tanks exposed to fires to support the prevention of catastrophic scenarios. For the first time, several data-sets were used to assess the model predictions considering different vessel scales, fire geometries and configurations. Comparison with experimental results demonstrates the predictive capabilities of the approach. The model allowed analyzing the role of different key phenomena, such as: the effect of free convection and thermal boundary layer forming in the near wall region, the thermal stratification, both in the liquid and the vapor phases, and the liquid thermal expansion. In addition, the influence of the vessel geometry on such phenomena was investigated. The results obtained may drive the design of emergency response, improving the safety of hazardous materials storage and transport systems.

We present an insert-based approach to fabricate scalable and multiplexable microfluidic devices for 3D cell culture and integration with downstream detection modules. Laser-cut inserts with a layer of electrospun fibers are used as a scaffold for 3D cell culture, with the inserts being easily assembled in a 3D-printed fluidic device for flow-based studies. With this approach, the number and types of cells (on the inserts) in one fluidic device can be customized. Moreover, after an investigation (i.e., stimulation) under flowing conditions, the cell-laden inserts can be removed easily for subsequent studies including imaging and cell lysis. In this paper, we first discuss the fabrication of the device and characterization of the fibrous inserts. Two device designs containing two (channel width = 260 μm) and four (channel width = 180 μm) inserts, respectively, were used for different experiments in this study. Cell adhesion on the inserts with flowing media through the device was tested by culturing endothelial cells. Macrophages were cultured and stimulated under different conditions, the results of which indicate that the fibrous scaffolds under flow conditions result in dramatic effects on the amount and kinetics of TNF-α production (after LPS stimulation). Finally, we show that the cell module can be integrated with a downstream absorbance detection scheme. Overall, this technology represents a new and versatile way to culture cells in a more in vivo fashion for in vitro studies with online detection modules. Cervical kyphotic deformity represents a difficult to treat pathology often arising from multiple factors including, but not limited to, traumatic injuries, degenerative changes, and ankylosing spondylitis. Furthermore, treatment of these deformities becomes increasingly difficult with any preexisting instrumentation. Currently, several options exist to treat these severe deformities, with the Smith-Petersen osteotomy and C-7 pedicle subtraction osteotomy being the most frequently used approaches. However, these techniques come with significant risk to the patient including nerve root injury as well as compression of the vertebral arteries. The authors here report on a series of 4 patients with rigid cervical deformity who underwent T-1 pedicle subtraction osteotomy. The authors review the relevant literature and provide a novel, less risky, and potentially more corrective approach for treating cervical deformities.

It is known that the passage of a strong shock wave in a moist atmosphere usually produces a condensation cloud that is briefly visible to the human eye. Weaker shocks such as those from boiling liquid expanding explosions (BLEVE) and vapour cloud explosions (VCE) may also produce such visible condensation clouds under certain atmospheric and lighting conditions. The Sunrise Propane accident in Toronto, Canada in August 2008 involving both BLEVEs and VCE gave clear evidence of this. In this age where video footage of an explosion incident is the norm (i.e. from the smart phone of a remote observer, or from a security video camera) it is very likely that there will be visual evidence of explosions. This evidence may include the size of a condensation cloud from a shock wave. This paper presents examples of such images along with a simple analysis that allows us to estimate the overpressure of the shock wave at the edge of this condensation cloud. In many cases we can also determine the distance to this shock overpressure from the video image. With this overpressure and distance data it is possible to estimate the energy of the explosion and the overpressure and expected damage at other distances. This could be very useful for accident analysis. Limited video footage of BLEVE tests is used to validate the method.

The anterior cingulate gyrus (ACG) is a continued focus of research as its exact role in brain function and vast connections with other anatomical locations is not fully understood. A review of the literature illustrates the role the ACG likely plays in cognitive and emotional processing, as well as a modulating role in motor function and goal-oriented behaviors. While lesions of the cingulate gyrus are rare, each new case broadens our understanding of its role in cognitive neuroscience and higher order processing. The authors present the case of an 8-year-old boy with a 1-month history of staring spells, agitated personality, and hyperphagia notable for the consumption of paper, who was found to have a 3-cm tumor in the left ACG. Following surgical resection of the tumor, his aggressive behavior and pica were ameliorated and the patient made an uneventful recovery, with no evidence of recurrence over the last 6 years since surgical resection. Here we discuss a unique behavioral presentation of pica, along with a review of the current literature, to illustrate functions of the ACG relevant to the location of the lesion.

The Michelson Interferometer for Passive Atmospheric Sounding (MIPAS) is a limb-viewing infrared Fourier transform spectrometer that operated from 2002 to 2012 onboard the ENVISAT satellite. The analysis of MIPAS measurements allows to study the temporal evolution of numerous species of interest for the study of the ozone in the stratosphere, pollutants and many green-house gases. The objective of the MIPAS Quality Working Group is to improve the quality of the MIPAS products through a fruitful collaboration among spectroscopists, Level 1, Level 2, and validation teams. A large effort has recently led to implement significant improvements in both ESA Level 1 and Level 2 processors, as well as in spectroscopic database and in some absorption cross-sections in order to improve the quality of the products. In addition to the products already present in the V7 dataset (temperature and the VMR of H2O, O3, HNO3, CH4, N2O, NO2, CFC-11, CFC-12, N2O5, ClONO2, HCFC-22, COF2, CF4, HCN and CCl4), the VMR of six additional species (OCS, CH3Cl, HDO, C2H2, C2H6, COCl2) will be provided in V8 dataset. In order to evaluate the impact of the changes in the products before full mission reprocessing, the analysis of the performances of the products of the modified L1 and L2 processors, as well as the auxiliary data, has been performed on a Diagnostic DataSet (DDS). The orbits of the DDS have been chosen in coincidence with correlative measurements for performing also a preliminary assessment of the accuracy of the products and to evaluate possible changes in the drift. With respect to V7 products, main improvements consist in a reduction of the temperature bias in the first part of the mission, a reduction of the discontinuities in CH4 and N2O time series due to daily gain upgrade, a better filtering of clouds and a better handling of horizontal inhomogeneities. The results of the assessment of the quality of MIPAS measurements will be shown, as well as the study of the temporal evolution and variability of all species. We will also investigate the spatial, seasonal, and interannual variations in the distribution of these species.

The present study introduces an innovative approach to the detailed simulation of the pressure build-up in equipment containing saturated liquids when exposed to fire. The approach is based on the adoption of a fully three-dimensional (3D) computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model of the inner fluid. Experimental data gathered from literature studies were used to validate the model considering vessels of several scales and geometries exposed to a full engulfing pool fire. The comparison between the results of the 3D CFD model developed and those of two-dimensional (2D) literature models was also carried out. This enabled deriving precise indications on the selection of the most suitable approach based on the type of accidental scenario to reproduce, confirming 2D models as sound and reliable tools to model the fluid behaviour when homogeneous heat exposure conditions are present. On the other side, limitations of 2D approaches in capturing edge effects on i) temperature profiles, ii) recirculation patterns, and iii) energy accumulation in the vessel lading during fire exposure were identified and discussed. The results obtained represent a valuable source of information to support risk management and emergency response planning.

Triple negative breast cancer is an aggressive, heterogeneous disease with high recurrence and metastasis rates even with modern chemotherapy regimens and thus is in need of new therapeutics. Here, three novel synthetic analogues of chalcones, plant-based molecules that have demonstrated potency against a wide variety of cancers, were investigated as potential therapeutics for triple negative breast cancer. These compounds exhibit IC(50) values of ~ 5 μM in triple negative breast cancer cell lines and are more potent against triple negative breast cancer cell lines than against non-tumor breast cell lines according to viability experiments. Tandem mass tag-based quantitative proteomics followed by gene set enrichment analysis and validation experiments using flow cytometry, apoptosis, and western blot assays revealed three different anti-cancer mechanisms for these compounds. First, the chalcone analogues induce the unfolded protein response followed by apoptosis. Second, increases in the abundances of MHC-I pathway proteins occurs, which would likely result in immune stimulation in an organism. And third, treatment with the chalcone analogues causes disruption of the cell cycle by interfering with microtubule structure and by inducing G1 phase arrest. These data demonstrate the potential of these novel chalcone derivatives as treatments for triple negative breast cancer, though further work evaluating their efficacy in vivo is needed.

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are extraordinarily stable and difficult to volatilize. This chapter discusses the technologies for soil and groundwater PFAS remediation. Waters impacted with PFAS are dosed with PerfluorAd, which flocculates with PFAS to form insoluble flake structures that precipitate. Since PerfluorAd stirred reactors only target PFAS, additional treatment steps may be implemented to minimize downstream granular activated carbon requirements, particularly in the case of complex or mixed-contaminant waters. The organic matter component of RemBind contains a highly carbonaceous surface capable of hydrophobic interactions with molecules, as occurs with activated carbon. RemBind has been used to remediate both PFAS-laden water and hydrocarbon-contaminated soils and has been reported to maintain its effectiveness. RemBind is marketed as a contaminant immobilization agent that can address a source of groundwater PFAS contamination. Growing international concern about the pervasiveness and toxicity of PFAS in the environment has led to the development and commercialization of technologies anticipating remediation needs.

A high bypass ratio turbofan engine capable of powering the Boeing 757 was considered for thrust and drag analysis. A quasi-2D engine model applying the fundamental thermodynamics conservation equations and practical constraints determined engine performance and provided cross-sectional areas in the low-pressure system. Coupled with suggestions on boat-tail angle and curvature from literature, a representative bypass duct and primary exhaust nozzle was created. 3D steady-RANS simulations using Fluent® 18 were performed on a 1/8th axisymmetric section of the geometry. A modified 3D fan zone model forcing radial equilibrium was used to model the fan and bypass stator. Takeoff speed and cruise operating conditions were modeled and simulated to identify changes in thrust composition and intake sensitivity. Comparison between net thrust predictions by the engine model and measured in CFD were within grid uncertainty and model sensitivity at cruise. Trends observed in a published database were satisfied and calculations coincided with GasTurb™ 8.0. Verification of thrust in this manner gave confidence to the aerodynamic performance prediction of this modest CFD. Obtaining a baseline bypass design would allow rapid testing of aftermarket components and integration techniques in a realistic flow-field without reliance on proprietary engine data.

Simulating full-coverage film cooling remains an elusive task for aerodynamicists given the small scale of the holes relative to the duct size where the holes are applied. Source term models were developed to simulate the effect through a perforated surface; however, the documented approaches failed to adequately describe how source term locations within the computational domain were selected. This paper presents a continuous ‘checker-board’ surface function that enables a distributed selection of cells where the source terms are applied; furthermore, the source term strengths applied to cells within a given hole are weighted. A 3:1 aspect ratio S-duct with an 1.5 area ratio exhaust diffuser, and 4% porosity applied to the upstream convex bend was evaluated. Steady-RANS obtained with the realizable k-ε model and source terms derived based on the approach of Andreini et al. (2014) had good pressure distribution, outlet velocity, and coolant mass flow agreement with respect to experiment when the hole diameter was resolved with two nodes. Reducing the computational domain element count by 75% and simulating hole diameters 2.8-times larger with 4% surface porosity gave back pressure and outlet distortion coefficients within grid uncertainty of the finest grid solution; however, local-convex-surface-averaged quantities showed grid dependency.

International audience; This paper presents the results of a small scale experimental study of BLEVE overpressure effects. Testing consisted of a sealed aluminum tube (0.6 L) filled with either water or propane, being heated by a flame until the internal pressure led to catastrophic failure and explosion. Three parameters were controlled during the experiments: the failing pressure, the weakened length on the tube and the fill level. BLEVEs were obtained with tests involving water and propane. Blast gages and optical techniques were used to characterize the shock wave escaping from the failing tube. The results obtained suggest that the lead shock was primarily generated by the vapor space. Overpressure results obtained were compared with the predictions of existing models and found to be in reasonable agreement except for overpressures measured vertically above the cylinder where the overpressures were highest. A prediction model based on only vapor space characteristics was developed. Images show that the shock was fully formed at some distance away from the vessel opening and this was due to the non-ideal opening of the vessel. The model developed was based on the characteristics of the shock when fully formed away from the tube. These characteristics were defined using a combination of imaging, pressure measurements, and predictions from shock tube theory.

Background Peristomal skin lesions are frequent complications of ostomy; however, there is no generally accepted nomenclature and classification system. Objective An interdisciplinary German expert panel (GESS) composed of ten members, developed an innovative semiquantitative classification system for peristomal skin lesions for further stratification of ostomy therapy. This score is based on criteria which can be assessed by stomal therapists and treating physicians. Results The new peristomal skin lesion score grades three categories: lesion (L), status of ostomy (S) and disease (D). The L category describes the integrity of the skin as normal (L0), lesion with sustained integrity of skin (L1), integrity destroyed (L2) and local infection (L3). The S category rates the complexity of ostomy therapy as normal (S0), increased (S1) and high but not sufficiently effective (S2). The additional letters for categorization O. R. P. H. E. US describe anatomical pathologies of the stoma itself: ostomy stenosis (O), retraction (R), prolapse (P), hernia (H), edema (E) and unfavorable site (US). A systemic disorder is either absent (D0), irrelevant (D1) or relevant (D2). The LSD score is the basis for a management algorithm. Conclusion The LSD score is comprehensive, standardized and holistic. Its straightforward use by health professionals can improve the consistency of the description of skin lesions and enhance the quality of ostomy therapy.

The accurate prediction of drag caused by bluff bodies present in aerospace applications, particularly at high angles of attack, was a challenge. An experimental and numerical investigation of a nacelle intended for fuselage-mounted aircraft engines was completed at several angles of attack between 0 deg and 45 deg with a Reynolds number of 6 × 105. Steady-flow simulations were conducted on hybrid grids using ANSYS fluent 15.0 with preference given to the realizable k–ε turbulence model. Both total drag and the pressure-to-viscous drag ratio increased with angle of attack as a consequence of greater flow separation on the suction surface. Near-field and far-field drag predictions had grid uncertainties below 2.5% and were within 10% of experiment, which were less than the uncertainties of the respective force balance and outlet traverse data at all angles of attack. Regions were defined on suction-side x-pressure force plots using the validated computational fluid dynamics (CFD) data-set that showed where and how much drag could be reduced. At 20 deg angle of attack, there was a potential to reduce up to 20% drag contained within the separated flow region.

MIPAS on ENVISAT performed almost continuous measurements of atmospheric composition from June 2002 to April 2012. ESA Level 2 processor, based on the Optimized Retrieval Model (ORM), originally designed for the Near Real Time analysis and developed by an European Consortium led by IFAC, is currently refined and used for the reanalysis of the full MIPAS mission. The maintenance and the upgrade of the ESA processor are made in the frame of the MIPAS Quality Working Group, where a fruitful collaboration among Level 1, Level 2 and validation teams can be exploited. This collaboration is essential to pursue improvements in the accuracy of the products and their characterization. This paper is meant to describe the most recent upgrades in the MIPAS processor to improve the quality of ESA products. In particular, the full mission was recently reprocessed with L1 V7 and L2 V7 processors, containing significant improvements with respect to previous version V6, and further improvements are in preparation, that will be collected in version 8 of the ESA processor. Improvements involve both L1 and L2 processors, as well as the auxiliary data. In the L1 processor the correction of the instrumental drift caused by the ageing of the detectors has been implemented in order to reduce the non negligible systematic error in the trend estimation; furthermore, the measured daily gain instead of weekly gain is now used for the radiometric calibration that allows to better take care of the discontinuities in the gain that occasionally occur in MIPAS band B. Improvements in the L2 processor include a different approach for retrieving atmospheric continuum, the use of an a posteriori regularization with altitude dependent constraint, a better approach for handling interfering species, a reduced bias in CFC-11, the handling of horizontal inhomogeneities and the use of ECMWF altitude/pressure relation to determine more accurate altitudes. Improvements in the auxiliary data consist in the use of microwindows with larger information content, an improved spectroscopic database and diurnally varying climatological dataset. Furthermore, with each new processor version additional species are provided, leading to 20 the number of retrieved species by the L2 V8 processor.Each of these changes has a different impact on the L2 products. The individual contributions, as well and the cumulative effects, will be evaluated with a comparison with previous versions of MIPAS products and corresponding results of validation. Improvements in the trend determination will also be evaluated, as well as the quality of the new retrieved species.

In aerospace industry ejectors are employed to reduce infrared signatures of hot exhaust gases and ducts. The ambient air, entrained from the surrounding, acts as a cushion between hot exhaust and the ejector walls. This reduces the temperature and hence the infrared signature of exhaust ducts. In many applications the ejectors are bent upward to hide the hot engine from heat seeking missiles. Due to the bend, the hot gases from the turbine hit the side walls leading to hot spots on the ejector walls. This study was aimed to see the effectiveness of a series of bent oblong ejectors as infrared signature suppressors. Wall temperatures were measured with infrared thermal imaging camera and pressures were measured with static wall taps. The wall static pressure shows rise in pressure along the length of the ejector. It also identifies areas of flow separation and the areas where the primary flow hits the ejector walls and produces hot spots. Wall temperature distribution shows that the oblong nozzle has a detrimental effect by creating hot spots on the ejector surface. Wall temperature of the ejectors increased with the degree of bend. The normalized maximum wall temperature (T*w(max)) of 67.5° bent ejector was 45% higher than the straight ejector. The swirl in the primary flow also increased the wall temperature. On a straight ejector the T*w(max) with the 30° swirl was 35% higher than the no swirl case.

Modern aeroengines utilized effusion cooling technology to further protect the components from degrading at the operating temperatures. Most studies did not address the influence of the manufacturing process used to form the cooling holes on the flow physics where percussion laser drilling was a common technique that produced irregularly shaped holes with roughened surfaces. The investigated as-drilled hole surface was statistically homogeneous, non-isotropic, and generally composed of gradually transitioning plateaus that had imperfections with an average height of 0.32 hole diameters. A conjugate heat transfer CFD study was completed on cylindrical, conical nozzle, and as-drilled holes, all yielding the same hole mass flow rates, with the realizable k-ε turbulence model at representative engine conditions. The cylindrical hole had higher film cooling effectiveness due to lower effluent velocity, and better in-hole heat transfer performance due to higher on-average in-hole flow velocities. The as-drilled hole had nominally better film cooling than the conical nozzle hole due to the higher in-hole turbulence production caused by the roughened surface texture. Ultimately, the hole area profile more significantly influenced the averaged metal temperature.

Decreasing drag on aircraft components was beneficial towards improving fuel economy and operational range. A generic axisymmetric nacelle-strut configuration typical of those housing fuselage-mounted engines was evaluated at a Reynolds number of 6 × 105 based on the nacelle maximum diameter d = 26.5 cm and an angle of attack of 20 deg. It was estimated that drag could be reduced by 20%. Three case studies were evaluated that added a fillet to the nacelle-strut corner, vortex generating triangular tabs, and flow-path obstructing vanes to improve flow control by reducing suction-side separation. Experimental results showed that a 0.11 d radius of curvature fillet reduced drag by 8% with respect to the baseline case. Numerical results employing the realizable k-ε turbulence model with wall functions predicted no improvements with the tabs and an 8% reduction with the vanes.

A simplified risk and cost-benefit analysis is presented for the application of thermal protection (TP) on propane and LPG highway tanker trucks operating in North America. A risk analysis is performed to determine the benefits of risk reduction by TP, relative to the costs of applying and maintaining TP on a tanker truck. The results show that TP is cost effective if the tanker truck spends enough time (or travels enough distance) in areas of moderate or high population density. The analysis is very sensitive to a number of inputs, including: (i) value of life, (ii) hot boiling liquid expanding vapor explosion frequency, (iii) public exposure to severe hazards, and (iv) life cost of TP. With this simplified analysis, it is possible to generate tanker truck exposure times to the public that justify the application of TP based on cost and benefit considerations.

International audience; This paper describes an experimental study of 2300 L pressure vessels exposed to remote fire heating by a natural gas fuelled wall fire simulator. The tanks were filled to 15% capacity with commercial liquid propane. The flame intensity and distance were varied to study the effect of different heating levels on the tank and its lading.The fire simulator is first characterized with tests including fire thermocouples, radiative flux meters and thermal imaging. With the appropriate positioning of a target tank it is possible to get very realistic fire heat fluxes at the tank surface.Three tests were conducted with the 2300 L tanks filled to 15% capacity with propane. The tanks were positioned at three different distances from the wall fire resulting in measured average peak heat flux at the tank surfaces ranging between 24 and 43 kW m−2. The data shows rapid rise in vapour space wall temperatures, significant temperature stratification in the vapour space, and moderate rate of pressure rise. These results provide excellent data for the validation of computer models used to predict the response of pressure vessels exposed to moderate heating from a remote fire.

Fires following road or railway accidents may escalate and cause catastrophic loss of containment and extremely severe final scenarios when hazardous material tankers are engulfed in flames. A heat-resistant coating is usually adopted to protect such tankers. However, defects may form on the coating due to wear, erosion, or accidental failures, thereby affecting the effectiveness of the thermal protection. In the present study, a methodology was developed to assess the performance of thermal protection coatings in the presence of defects. A thermal model based on finite element modeling (FEM) was developed to reproduce the behavior of tankers coated with defective insulation when exposed to fires. Experimental data were used to validate the model, which allowed to determine the temperature profile of tank shell with respect to time under different fire conditions. Specific key performance indicators (KPIs), calculated on the basis of the results of FEM simulations, were defined. The KPIs allow the identification of threshold conditions in which fireproofing performance is degraded and jeopardizes the structural integrity of the protected vessel when involved in fire. An approach based on the KPIs was developed to support the implementation of on-condition inspection-based maintenance strategies of thermal coatings.

Recent studies have shown that mental script-based rehearsal and simulation-based training improve the transfer of surgical skills in various medical disciplines. Despite significant advances in technology and intraoperative techniques over the last several decades, surgical skills training on neurosurgical operations still carries significant risk of serious morbidity or mortality. Potentially avoidable technical errors are well recognized as contributing to poor surgical outcome. Surgical education is undergoing overwhelming change, as a result of the reduction of work hours and current trends focusing on patient safety and linking reimbursement with clinical outcomes. Thus, there is a need for adjunctive means for neurosurgical training, which is a recent advancement in simulation technology. ImmersiveTouch is an augmented reality system that integrates a haptic device and a high-resolution stereoscopic display. This simulation platform uses multiple sensory modalities, re-creating many of the environmental cues experienced during an actual procedure. Modules available include ventriculostomy, bone drilling, percutaneous trigeminal rhizotomy, and simulated spinal modules such as pedicle screw placement, vertebroplasty, and lumbar puncture. We present our experience with the development of such augmented reality neurosurgical modules and the feedback from neurosurgical residents.

Objective To analyze the safety and efficacy of skipping instrumentation at the C7 vertebra during posterior cervicothoracic fusions. Methods This is a retrospective chart review of 53 patients who underwent multilevel posterior cervical fusion between 2010 and 2015. Of 53 patients, 7 patients were instrumented at C7, serving as the control group, whereas the remaining 46 patients were not. Evaluation of efficacy was based on intraoperative complications, operative time, estimated blood loss, significant long-term complications, and radiographic evidence of fusion. Results Skipping the C7 level resulted in a significant reduction in estimated blood loss (321 ± 214 mL in the C7 bridge group vs. 531 ± 365 mL in the control group) and an insignificant, but decreased, reduction in operative time (155 ± 70 minutes in the C7 bridge group vs. 194 ± 66 minutes in the control group). Two intraoperative complications were noted in the C7 group, and 1 intraoperative complication was noted in the control group. In addition, patients skipped at C7 maintained sagittal balance with fusion rates similar to control patients at follow-up. No significant long-term complications were found in both groups. Conclusions Skipping C7 in a multilevel posterior cervicothoracic fusion demonstrates significantly reduced estimated blood loss and faster operative times compared with the control group. In addition, postoperative assessment yielded similar rates of fusion in both groups. Serious negative outcomes of skipping C7 were not found in this retrospective study. Our study results illustrate the clinical benefits of skipping instrumentation at C7 to minimize surgical risk in patients undergoing posterior cervical fusion across the cervicothoracic junction.

The frequent incidences of Non-Accident Releases (NARs) of lading from tank cars have resulted in an increasing interest in transporting hazardous materials in total containment conditions (i.e., no pressure relief devices). However, the ability of tank cars to meet thermal protection requirements provided in the Code of Federal Regulations under conditions of total containment has not been established. The intent of this effort was to evaluate through a series of third-scale fire tests, the ability of tank cars to meet the thermal protection requirements under total containment conditions, with a particular focus on caustic ladings. A previous paper on this effort described the test design and planning effort associated with this research effort. A series of seven fire tests were conducted using third scale tanks. The test fires simulated fully engulfing, hydrocarbon fueled, pool fire conditions. The initial tests were conducted with water as a lading under jacketed and non-jacketed conditions and also with different fill levels (98% full or 50% full). Additionally, two tests were conducted with the caustic, Sodium Hydroxide as the lading, each test with a different fill level. In general, the tanks with water were allowed to fail or reach near-failure conditions, whereas, the tests with the caustic lading were not allowed to proceed near failure for safety reasons. This paper describes the results and observations from the fire tests, and discusses the various factors that affected the fire test performance of the test tanks. Review of results from the one-third scale tests, and subsequent scaling to full-scale suggest that a full-scale tank car filled with 50% NaOH solution is unlikely to meet the 100-minute survival requirement under conditions of total containment.
