1. Case report: Giant cell tumor of bone in the mandible of a goat—diagnostics, surgical treatment, and outcome

Abstract: Neoplastic processes of the mandible and their treatment are rarely reported in large animal species. Specifically, giant cell tumor of bone is an uncommon tumor in animals and has been associated in humans with locally invasive behavior and a high recurrence rate. En-bloc resection is the treatment of choice, but depending on the localization of the tumor, this may result in functional deficits. This report details the diagnostic work-up, treatment, and long-term outcome of a giant cell tumor of bone involving the rostral mandible and mandibular symphysis of a goat. Extensive rostral mandibulectomy involving the entire mandibular symphysis without surgical fixation of the hemimandibles was performed. Histological and electron microscopic findings of the tumor were consistent with a giant cell tumor of bone. Although a mutation of the H3F3A gene is considered the driver of tumor development in human giant cell tumors, using molecular analysis, this gene mutation could not be confirmed in this case. Follow-up examinations revealed spontaneous secondary fusion of both hemimandibles and no signs of tumor recurrence. Nearly 1 year after surgery, the owners reported no signs of tumor regrowth.

2. Trephination versus Minimally Invasive Transnasal Approaches for the Diagnosis and Treatment of Sinus Disease in Horses

Abstract: This retrospective case series aims to highlight the advantages and disadvantages of different treatment options for sinus disease in horses, with a special focus on surgical approaches. The medical records of 25 horses with sinusitis which presented to the equine hospital, Vetmeduni Vienna, between August 2020 and January 2022 were analysed. In 11 cases, conservative treatment by the transnasal endoscopic lavage of the affected sinuses through the sinonasal channel or through a developed, pre-existing sinonasal fistula was performed. In the remaining 14 cases, openings into the sinus for subsequent lavage were surgically created either via classical trephination/bone flaps (8) or by transnasal endoscopically guided minimally invasive approaches (8). In some cases (2), a combination of classical extra-nasal and minimally invasive transnasal approaches was required. The minimally invasive techniques used were comprised of laser surgery (3), electrosurgery (3) and balloon sinoplasty (2). The sinusitis and underlying diseases were successfully treated in all of the horses until hospital discharge. Long-term follow-up could be obtained only from a small number of patients due to the temporal proximity (the study began two years ago) to their initial discharge from the hospital, but they showed the continuous resolution of clinical signs in all cases in which follow up data were available. The results of this case series indicate that if surgical intervention is required, minimally invasive techniques appear to be a promising and potentially cheaper alternative to classical extra-nasal approaches for the treatment of sinus disease in selected cases. In the future, the use of these techniques should be considered more commonly with the broader availability of improved endoscopes and instruments. Additionally, by using small-diameter endoscopes, the need for any surgical intervention might be significantly reduced in many cases.

3. A Descriptive Study of the Clinical Presentation, Management, and Outcome of Horses with Acute Soft Tissue Trauma of the Tarsus and the Association with Synovial Involvement

Abstract: The tarsus is one of the most common areas of traumatic injury with associated synovial involvement (SI) in horses. The aim of this retrospective study was to describe the clinical presentation, diagnostic procedures, management (emphasizing the type, duration, and route of antimicrobial administration), and outcome of cases with acute soft tissue trauma to the tarsal region. The presenting clinical features, the results of diagnostic modalities, and the initial response to therapy were assessed for their usefulness to predict SI. Medical records of 72 cases were included and SI was diagnosed in 34 cases (47.2%). Increased synovial effusion, lameness on admission (OR = 4.1; 95%CI 1.0–16.4), persistent lameness (OR = 5.7; 95%CI 1.8–17.9), increased blood SAA values (≥200 mg/L) from initial to second measurement (OR = 4.3; 95%CI 1.2–15.5), and wound location on the plantar/plantarolateral/plantaromedial compared to the lateral aspect of the tarsus (OR = 7.0; 95%CI 1.6–30.9) were associated with SI. Radiographs, ultrasonography, and the use of pressure testing when a wound was present proved to be useful in correctly diagnosing SI. The median duration of systemic antimicrobial administration was 8 (IQR: 5 to 9) days and most horses received local antimicrobial therapy. This study highlights several relevant clinical features and their association with SI and emphasizes the usefulness of local antimicrobial therapy in these cases.

Abstract: Zusammenfassung: \ud Im frühen postmortalen Intervall wird zur Todeszeitschätzung die Nomogramm-Methode (NM) angewendet, um ein Todeszeitintervall zu bestimmen. Unabhängig hiervon kann, z. B. durch kriminalistische\ud Ermittlungen, der mögliche Versterbenszeitraum eingegrenzt werden. Solche Eingrenzungen haben jedoch Auswirkungen auf die Grenzen des NM-Intervalls bzw. die darauf liegende Wahrscheinlichkeitsmasse, welche korrigiert werden müssen. Dies wird durch die Methode der bedingten Wahrscheinlichkeitsverteilung (CPD-Methode) ermöglicht. Theoretische Grundlagen, typische Szenarien und die Anwendung der Methode mittels eines speziellen Excel-Spreadsheets werden vorgestellt.\ud \ud Abstract (English):\ud In the early postmortem interval the so called Nomogram method (NM) is applied to derive a death time interval. Independently, police investigations can determine a possible death time range. Such limitations to the possible time of death however have consequences on the NM-interval’s width and probability, which must be accounted for. This is made possible by means of the conditional probability distribution (CPD method). Its theoretical foundations, typical use case scenarios and application using a dedicated Excel spreadsheet are demonstrated.

Abstract: Aims. We produce a clean and well-characterised catalogue of objects within 100 pc of the Sun from the Gaia Early Data Release 3. We characterise the catalogue through comparisons to the full data release, external catalogues, and simulations. We carry out a first analysis of the science that is possible with this sample to demonstrate its potential and best practices for its use., Methods. Theselection of objects within 100 pc from the full catalogue used selected training sets, machine-learning procedures, astrometric quantities, and solution quality indicators to determine a probability that the astrometric solution is reliable. The training set construction exploited the astrometric data, quality flags, and external photometry. For all candidates we calculated distance posterior probability densities using Bayesian procedures and mock catalogues to define priors. Any object with reliable astrometry and a non-zero probability of being within 100 pc is included in the catalogue., Results. We have produced a catalogue of 331 312 objects that we estimate contains at least 92% of stars of stellar type M9 within 100 pc of the Sun. We estimate that 9% of the stars in this catalogue probably lie outside 100 pc, but when the distance probability function is used, a correct treatment of this contamination is possible. We produced luminosity functions with a high signal-to-noise ratio for the main-sequence stars, giants, and white dwarfs. We examined in detail the Hyades cluster, the white dwarf population, and wide-binary systems and produced candidate lists for all three samples. We detected local manifestations of several streams, superclusters, and halo objects, in which we identified 12 members of Gaia Enceladus. We present the first direct parallaxes of five objects in multiple systems within 10 pc of the Sun., Conclusions. We provide the community with a large, well-characterised catalogue of objects in the solar neighbourhood. This is a primary benchmark for measuring and understanding fundamental parameters and descriptive functions in astronomy.

Abstract: Rowell, N., et al., [Context] The unprecedented astrometric precision of the Gaia mission relies on accurate estimates of the locations of sources in the Gaia data stream. This is ultimately performed by point spread function (PSF) fitting, which in turn requires an accurate reconstruction of the PSF, including calibrations of all the major dependences. These include a strong colour dependence due to Gaia's broad G band and a strong time dependence due to the evolving contamination levels and instrument focus. Accurate PSF reconstruction is also important for photometry. Gaia Early Data Release 3 (EDR3) will, for the first time, use a PSF calibration that models several of the strongest dependences, leading to signficantly reduced systematic errors. [Aims] We describe the PSF model and calibration pipeline implemented for Gaia EDR3, including an analysis of the calibration results over the 34 months of data. We include a discussion of the limitations of the current pipeline and directions for future releases. This will be of use both to users of Gaia data and as a reference for other precision astrometry missions. [Methods] We develop models of the 1D line spread function (LSF) and 2D PSF profiles based on a linear combination of basis components. These are designed for flexibility and performance, as well as to meet several mathematical criteria such as normalisation. We fit the models to selected primary sources in independent time ranges, using simple parameterisations for the colour and other dependences. Variation in time is smoothed by merging the independent calibrations in a square root information filter, with resets at certain mission events that induce a discontinuous change in the PSF. [Results] The PSF calibration shows strong time and colour dependences that accurately reproduce the varying state of the Gaia astrometric instrument. Analysis of the residuals reveals both the performance and the limitations of the current models and calibration pipeline, and indicates the directions for future development. [Conclusions] The PSF modelling and calibration carried out for Gaia EDR3 represents a major step forwards in the data processing and will lead to reduced systematic errors in the core mission data products. Abstract: Context. Gaia Early Data Release 3 (Gaia EDR3) provides accurate astrometry for about 1.6 million compact (QSO-like) extragalactic sources, 1.2 million of which have the best-quality five-parameter astrometric solutions. Aims. The proper motions of QSO-like sources are used to reveal a systematic pattern due to the acceleration of the solar systembarycentre with respect to the rest frame of the Universe. Apart from being an important scientific result by itself, the acceleration measured in this way is a good quality indicator of the Gaia astrometric solution. Methods. Theeffect of the acceleration was obtained as a part of the general expansion of the vector field of proper motions in vector spherical harmonics (VSH). Various versions of the VSH fit and various subsets of the sources were tried and compared to get the most consistent result and a realistic estimate of its uncertainty. Additional tests with the Gaia astrometric solution were used to get a better idea of the possible systematic errors in the estimate. Results. Our best estimate of the acceleration based on Gaia EDR3 is (2.32 ± 0.16) × 10-10 m s-2 (or 7.33 ±0.51 km s-1 Myr-1) towards α = 269.1° ± 5.4°, δ = -31.6° ± 4.1°, corresponding to a proper motion amplitude of 5.05 ±0.35 μas yr-1. This is in good agreement with the acceleration expected from current models of the Galactic gravitational potential. We expect that future Gaia data releases will provide estimates of the acceleration with uncertainties substantially below 0.1 μas yr-1. © ESO 2021.

Abstract: Aims. We aim to demonstrate the scientific potential of the Gaia Early Data Release 3 (EDR3) for the study of different aspects of the Milky Way structure and evolution and we provide, at the same time, a description of several practical aspects of the data and examples of their usage., Methods. We used astrometric positions, proper motions, parallaxes, and photometry from EDR3 to select different populations and components and to calculate the distances and velocities in the direction of the anticentre. In this direction, the Gaia astrometric data alone enable the calculation of the vertical and azimuthal velocities; also, the extinction is relatively low compared to other directions in the Galactic plane. We then explore the disturbances of the current disc, the spatial and kinematical distributions of early accreted versus in situ stars, the structures in the outer parts of the disc, and the orbits of open clusters Berkeley 29 and Saurer 1., Results. With the improved astrometry and photometry of EDR3, we find that: (i) the dynamics of the Galactic disc are very complex with oscillations in the median rotation and vertical velocities as a function of radius, vertical asymmetries, and new correlations, including a bimodality with disc stars with large angular momentum moving vertically upwards from below the plane, and disc stars with slightly lower angular momentum moving preferentially downwards; (ii) we resolve the kinematic substructure (diagonal ridges) in the outer parts of the disc for the first time; (iii) the red sequence that has been associated with the proto-Galactic disc that was present at the time of the merger with Gaia-Enceladus-Sausage is currently radially concentrated up to around 14 kpc, while the blue sequence that has been associated with debris of the satellite extends beyond that; (iv) there are density structures in the outer disc, both above and below the plane, most probably related to Monoceros, the Anticentre Stream, and TriAnd, for which the Gaia data allow an exhaustive selection of candidate member stars and dynamical study; and (v) the open clusters Berkeley 29 and Saurer 1, despite being located at large distances from the Galactic centre, are on nearly circular disc-like orbits., Conclusions. Even with our simple preliminary exploration of the Gaia EDR3, we demonstrate how, once again, these data from the European Space Agency are crucial for our understanding of the different pieces of our Galaxy and their connection to its global structure and history.

Abstract: We present the early installment of the third Gaia data release, Gaia EDR3, consisting of astrometry and photometry for 1.8 billion sources brighter than magnitude 21, complemented with the list of radial velocities from Gaia DR2. Gaia EDR3 contains celestial positions and the apparent brightness in G for approximately 1.8 billion sources. For 1.5 billion of those sources, parallaxes, proper motions, and the (G_BP-G_RP) colour are also available. The passbands for G, G_BP, and G_RP are provided as part of the release. For ease of use, the 7 million radial velocities from Gaia DR2 are included in this release, after the removal of a small number of spurious values. New radial velocities will appear as part of Gaia DR3. Finally, Gaia EDR3 represents an updated materialisation of the celestial reference frame (CRF) in the optical, the Gaia-CRF3, which is based solely on extragalactic sources. The creation of the source list for Gaia EDR3 includes enhancements that make it more robust with respect to high proper motion stars, and the disturbing effects of spurious and partially resolved sources. The source list is largely the same as that for Gaia DR2, but it does feature new sources and there are some notable changes. The source list will not change for Gaia DR3. Gaia EDR3 represents a significant advance over Gaia DR2, with parallax precisions increased by 30 percent, proper motion precisions increased by a factor of 2, and the systematic errors in the astrometry suppressed by 30--40 percent for the parallaxes and by a factor ~2.5 for the proper motions. The photometry also features increased precision, but above all much better homogeneity across colour, magnitude, and celestial position. A single passband for G, G_BP, and G_RP is valid over the entire magnitude and colour range, with no systematics above the 1 percent level.

Abstract: [Context] Gaia Early Data Release 3 (Gaia EDR3) contains results for 1.812 billion sources in the magnitude range G = 3-21 based on observations collected by the European Space Agency Gaia satellite during the first 34 months of its operational phase. [Aims] We describe the input data, the models, and the processing used for the astrometric content of Gaia EDR3, as well as the validation of these results performed within the astrometry task. [Methods] The processing broadly followed the same procedures as for Gaia DR2, but with significant improvements to the modelling of observations. For the first time in the Gaia data processing, colour-dependent calibrations of the line- and point-spread functions have been used for sources with well-determined colours from DR2. In the astrometric processing these sources obtained five-parameter solutions, whereas other sources were processed using a special calibration that allowed a pseudocolour to be estimated as the sixth astrometric parameter. Compared with DR2, the astrometric calibration models have been extended, and the spin-related distortion model includes a self-consistent determination of basic-angle variations, improving the global parallax zero point. [Results] Gaia EDR3 gives full astrometric data (positions at epoch J2016.0, parallaxes, and proper motions) for 1.468 billion sources (585 millionwith five-parameter solutions, 882 million with six parameters), and mean positions at J2016.0 for an additional 344 million.Solutions with five parameters are generally more accurate than six-parameter solutions, and are available for 93% of the sources brighter than the 17th magnitude. The median uncertainty in parallax and annual proper motion is 0.02-0.03 mas at magnitude G = 9-14, and around 0.5 mas at G = 20. Abstract: Gaia Early Data Release 3 (Gaia EDR3) gives trigonometric parallaxes for nearly 1.5 billion sources. Inspection of the EDR3 data for sources identified as quasars reveals that their parallaxes are biased, that is systematically offset from the expected distribution around zero, by a few tens of microarcsec. We attempt to map the main dependencies of the parallax bias in EDR3. In principle this could provide a recipe for correcting the EDR3 parallaxes. For faint sources the quasars provide the most direct way to estimate parallax bias. In order to extend this to brighter sources and a broader range of colours, we use differential methods based on physical pairs (binaries) and sources in the Large Magellanic Cloud. The functional forms of the dependencies are explored by mapping the systematic differences between EDR3 and DR2 parallaxes. The parallax bias is found to depend in a non-trivial way on (at least) the magnitude, colour, and ecliptic latitude of the source. Different dependencies apply to the five- and six-parameter solutions in EDR3. While it is not possible to derive a definitive recipe for the parallax correction, we give tentative expressions to be used at the researcher's discretion and point out some possible paths towards future improvements., Comment: 32 pages, 30 figures. Abstract: Context. Gaia Early Data Release 3 (Gaia EDR3) provides accurate astrometry for about 1.6 million compact (QSO-like) extragalactic sources, 1.2 million of which have the best-quality five-parameter astrometric solutions., Aims. The proper motions of QSO-like sources are used to reveal a systematic pattern due to the acceleration of the solar systembarycentre with respect to the rest frame of the Universe. Apart from being an important scientific result by itself, the acceleration measured in this way is a good quality indicator of the Gaia astrometric solution., Methods. Theeffect of the acceleration was obtained as a part of the general expansion of the vector field of proper motions in vector spherical harmonics (VSH). Various versions of the VSH fit and various subsets of the sources were tried and compared to get the most consistent result and a realistic estimate of its uncertainty. Additional tests with the Gaia astrometric solution were used to get a better idea of the possible systematic errors in the estimate., Results. Our best estimate of the acceleration based on Gaia EDR3 is (2.32 +/- 0.16) x 10(-10) m s(-2) (or 7.33 +/- 0.51 km s(-1) Myr-1) towards alpha = 269.1 degrees +/- 5.4 degrees, delta = -31.6 degrees +/- 4.1 degrees, corresponding to a proper motion amplitude of 5.05 +/- 0.35 mu as yr(-1). This is in good agreement with the acceleration expected from current models of the Galactic gravitational potential. We expect that future Gaia data releases will provide estimates of the acceleration with uncertainties substantially below 0.1 mu as yr(-1).

Abstract: BACKGROUND Currently, the World Health Organization recommends the use of alcohol-based hand rubs (ABR) for surgical hand preparation in human surgery. When disinfecting soaps are used, a rubbing technique causes less skin irritation than brush scrubbing. Based on a recent survey, most equine surgeons still use disinfecting soap. The efficacy of scrubbing vs. rubbing and the use of sole ABR compared with chlorhexidine (CHx)- based products has not been evaluated in the equine surgical setting. OBJECTIVES To compare four surgical hand antisepsis techniques in equine surgery for reduction of aerobic bacterial counts from pre- to post-preparation (immediate efficacy) and at the end of surgery (sustained efficacy). STUDY DESIGN Randomised, prospective clinical trial. METHODS A 4% CHx-based product applied with either a scrub or rub technique, one sole ABR (ET; 80% ethanol) and one CHx/alcohol-combination (CHx/ET; 1% CHx and 61% ethanol) product both applied with a rub technique were evaluated. Samples were collected by glove juice technique and cultured on 3M™ Petrifilm plates and counted using a 3M™ Petrifilm plate reader. RESULTS Immediate mean bacterial log10 colony forming unit (CFU) reduction was 2.4 for CHx-scrub, 2.8 for CHx-rub, 3.1 for CHx/ET and 2.1 for ET. Abstract: Gaia Data Release 2 (Gaia DR2) contains results for 1693 million sources in the magnitude range 3 to 21 based on observations collected by the European Space Agency Gaia satellite during the first 22 months of its operational phase. We describe the input data, models, and processing used for the astrometric content of Gaia DR2, and the validation of these results performed within the astrometry task. Some 320 billion centroid positions from the pre-processed astrometric CCD observations were used to estimate the five astrometric parameters (positions, parallaxes, and proper motions) for 1332 million sources, and approximate positions at the reference epoch J2015.5 for an additional 361 million mostly faint sources. Special validation solutions were used to characterise the random and systematic errors in parallax and proper motion. For the sources with five-parameter astrometric solutions, the median uncertainty in parallax and position at the reference epoch J2015.5 is about 0.04 mas for bright (G, 25 pages, 29 figures. Abstract: Context. The second release of Gaia data (Gaia DR2) contains the astrometric parameters for more than half a million quasars. This set defines a kinematically non-rotating reference frame in the optical domain. A subset of these quasars have accurate VLBI positions that allow the axes of the reference frame to be aligned with the International Celestial Reference System (ICRF) radio frame. Aims. We describe the astrometric and photometric properties of the quasars that were selected to represent the celestial reference frame of Gaia DR2 (Gaia-CRF2), and to compare the optical and radio positions for sources with accurate VLBI positions. Methods. Descriptive statistics are used to characterise the overall properties of the quasar sample. Residual rotation and orientation errors and large-scale systematics are quantified by means of expansions in vector spherical harmonics. Positional differences are calculated relative to a prototype version of the forthcoming ICRF3. Results. Gaia-CRF2 consists of the positions of a sample of 556 869 sources in Gaia DR2, obtained from a positional cross-match with the ICRF3-prototype and AllWISE AGN catalogues. The sample constitutes a clean, dense, and homogeneous set of extragalactic point sources in the magnitude range G ≈ 16 to 21 mag with accurately known optical positions. The median positional uncertainty is 0.12 mas for G < 18 mag and 0.5 mas at G = mag. Large-scale systematics are estimated to be in the range 20 to 30 μas. The accuracy claims are supported by the parallaxes and proper motions of the quasars in Gaia DR2. The optical positions for a subset of 2820 sources in common with the ICRF3-prototype show very good overall agreement with the radio positions, but several tens of sources have significantly discrepant positions. Conclusions. Based on less than 40% of the data expected from the nominal Gaia mission, Gaia-CRF2 is the first realisation of a non-rotating global optical reference frame that meets the ICRS prescriptions, meaning that it is built only on extragalactic sources. Its accuracy matches the current radio frame of the ICRF, but the density of sources in all parts of the sky is much higher, except along the Galactic equator. © ESO 2018.

Abstract: OBJECTIVE To determine the incidence of and associated risk factors for glove perforation in large animal surgery. STUDY DESIGN Prospective observational cohort study. SAMPLE POPULATION Surgical gloves (n = 917) worn during 103 large animal surgical procedures. METHODS Gloves worn by personnel involved in sterile preparation and surgical procedures were tested for perforation by 2 previously validated methods, water leak test (WLT) and electroconductivity testing (ECT). The association between surgical and glove-related variables and glove perforation was assessed by using a multivariable mixed-effect logistic regression model. RESULTS At least 1 glove perforation was detected in 66% of surgical procedures, and 17.9% (164/917) of gloves tested were identified as perforated. All perforations were detected by ECT, whereas only 110/178 (61.8%) were detected by WLT. All perforations detected by WLT were also detected by ECT. Abstract: International audience; Context. The first data release from the Gaia mission contains accurate positions and magnitudes for more than a billion sources, and proper motions and parallaxes for the majority of the 2.5 million Hipparcos and Tycho-2 stars. Aims: We describe three essential elements of the initial data treatment leading to this catalogue: the image analysis, the construction of a source list, and the near real-time monitoring of the payload health. We also discuss some weak points that set limitations for the attainable precision at the present stage of the mission. Methods: Image parameters for point sources are derived from one-dimensional scans, using a maximum likelihood method, under the assumption of a line spread function constant in time, and a complete modelling of bias and background. These conditions are, however, not completely fulfilled. The Gaia source list is built starting from a large ground-based catalogue, but even so a significant number of new entries have been added, and a large number have been removed. The autonomous onboard star image detection will pick up many spurious images, especially around bright sources, and such unwanted detections must be identified. Another key step of the source list creation consists in arranging the more than 1010 individual detections in spatially isolated groups that can be analysed individually. Results: Complete software systems have been built for the Gaia initial data treatment, that manage approximately 50 million focal plane transits daily, giving transit times and fluxes for 500 million individual CCD images to the astrometric and photometric processing chains. The software also carries out a successful and detailed daily monitoring of Gaia health.

Abstract: Gaia Data Release 1 (Gaia DR1) contains astrometric results for more than 1 billion stars brighter than magnitude 20.7 based on observations collected by the Gaia satellite during the first 14 months of its operational phase. We give a brief overview of the astrometric content of the data release and of the model assumptions, data processing, and validation of the results. For stars in common with the Hipparcos and Tycho-2 catalogues, complete astrometric single-star solutions are obtained by incorporating positional information from the earlier catalogues. For other stars only their positions are obtained by neglecting their proper motions and parallaxes. The results are validated by an analysis of the residuals, through special validation runs, and by comparison with external data. Results. For about two million of the brighter stars (down to magnitude ~11.5) we obtain positions, parallaxes, and proper motions to Hipparcos-type precision or better. For these stars, systematic errors depending e.g. on position and colour are at a level of 0.3 milliarcsecond (mas). For the remaining stars we obtain positions at epoch J2015.0 accurate to ~10 mas. Positions and proper motions are given in a reference frame that is aligned with the International Celestial Reference Frame (ICRF) to better than 0.1 mas at epoch J2015.0, and non-rotating with respect to ICRF to within 0.03 mas/yr. The Hipparcos reference frame is found to rotate with respect to the Gaia DR1 frame at a rate of 0.24 mas/yr. Based on less than a quarter of the nominal mission length and on very provisional and incomplete calibrations, the quality and completeness of the astrometric data in Gaia DR1 are far from what is expected for the final mission products. The results nevertheless represent a huge improvement in the available fundamental stellar data and practical definition of the optical reference frame., Accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics

Abstract: Context. As part of the data processing for Gaia Data Release 1 (Gaia DR1) a special astrometric solution was computed, the so-called auxiliary quasar solution. This gives positions for selected extragalactic objects, including radio sources in the second realisation of the International Celestial Reference Frame (ICRF2) that have optical counterparts bright enough to be observed with Gaia. A subset of these positions was used to align the positional reference frame of Gaia DR1 with the ICRF2. Although the auxiliary quasar solution was important for internal validation and calibration purposes, the resulting positions are in general not published in Gaia DR1. Aims. We describe the properties of the Gaia auxiliary quasar solution for a subset of sources matched to ICRF2, and compare their optical and radio positions at the sub-mas level. Methods. Descriptive statistics are used to characterise the optical data for the ICRF sources and the optical-radio differences. The most discrepant cases are examined using online resources to find possible alternative explanations than a physical optical-radio offset of the quasars. Results. In the auxiliary quasar solution 2191 sources have good optical positions matched to ICRF2 sources with high probability. Their formal standard errors are better than 0.76 milliarcsec (mas) for 50% of the sources and better than 3.35 mas for 90%. Optical magnitudes are obtained in Gaia’s unfiltered photometric G band. The Gaia results for these sources are given as a separate table in Gaia DR1. The comparison with the radio positions of the defining sources shows no systematic differences larger than a few tenths of a mas. The fraction of questionable solutions, not readily accounted for by the statistics, is less than 6%. Normalised differences have extended tails requiring case-by-case investigations for around 100 sources, but we have not seen any difference indisputably linked to an optical-radio offset in the sources. Conclusions. With less than a quarter of the data expected from the nominal mission it has been possible to obtain positions at the sub-mas level for most of the ICRF sources having an optical counterpart brighter than 20.5 mag.

Abstract: Die Verfahrensanweisung zur Radioiodtherapie (RIT) und zur 131I-Ganzkorperszintigraphie beim differenzierten Schilddrusenkarzinom im Kindes- und Jugendalter reiht sich thematisch neben die entsprechenden Verfahrensanweisungen (Version 3), die fur erwachsene Patienten verfasst sind, und konkretisiert die interdisziplinare Leitlinie der Deutschen Krebsgesellschaft um die nuklearmedizinischen Aspekte. Besonderheiten im Kindes- und Jugendalter sind die hohere Aggressivitat des papillaren Schilddrusenkarzinoms, die Haufigkeit eines organuberschreitenden Tumorwachstums und einer disseminierten pulmonalen Metastasierung sowie die hohe lokale Rezidivrate. Die TNM-Klassifikation wird aufgrund der geringen Ausdehnung der normalen kindlichen Schilddruse der Risikostratifikation nicht gerecht. Grundsatzlich besteht auch bei Kindern die Empfehlung zur Radioiodtherapie, wobei die 131I-Aktivitat gewichtsabhangig appliziert wird. Bei kleinen papillaren Schilddrusenkarzinomen (≤1 cm) ist die Indikation zu einer ablativen Radioiodtherapie eher groszugig zu stellen. Nach Hormonentzug wird die TSH-Stimulation bereits nach zwei Wochen (Kinder) bzw. drei Wochen (Jugendliche) erreicht. Antiemetika werden groszugig verordnet. Die Indikation zur CT des Thorax und zur Lungenfunktionsuntersuchung ist bei Metastasenverdacht groszugig zu stellen. Auf die diagnostische 131I-Ganzkorperszintigraphie drei bis sechs Monate nach ablativer Radioiodtherapie sollte wegen der Haufigkeit einer lymphogenen Metastasierung nicht verzichtet werden. Nachsorgeintervalle sind eher kurzer zu wahlen, um eine unzureichende Compliance bei Kindern fruhzeitig zu erfassen und um die Hormondosis gewichtsbezogen anzupassen. Der hohere Normbereich von fT3 fur Kinder ist zu beachten. Es liegt keine ausreichende Evidenz vor, ob und wann eine nicht-suppressive Einstellung der Schilddrusenfunktion sinnvoll ist. Daher ist die TSHSuppression grundsatzlich anzustreben.

Abstract: In endangered and local pig breeds of small population sizes, production has to focus on alternative niche markets with an emphasis on specific product and meat quality traits to achieve economic competiveness. For designing breeding strategies on meat quality, an adequate performance testing scheme focussing on phenotyped selection candidates is required. For the endangered German pig breed 'Bunte Bentheimer' (BB), no breeding program has been designed until now, and no performance testing scheme has been implemented. For local breeds, mainly reared in small-scale production systems, a performance test based on in vivo indicator traits might be a promising alternative in order to increase genetic gain for meat quality traits. Hence, the main objective of this study was to design and evaluate breeding strategies for the improvement of meat quality within the BB breed using in vivo indicator traits and genetic markers. The in vivo indicator trait was backfat thickness measured by ultrasound (BFiv), and genetic markers were allele variants at the ryanodine receptor 1 (RYR1) locus. In total, 1116 records of production and meat quality traits were collected, including 613 in vivo ultrasound measurements and 713 carcass and meat quality records. Additionally, 700 pigs were genotyped at the RYR1 locus. Data were used (1) to estimate genetic (co)variance components for production and meat quality traits, (2) to estimate allele substitution effects at the RYR1 locus using a selective genotyping approach and (3) to evaluate breeding strategies on meat quality by combining results from quantitative-genetic and molecular-genetic approaches. Heritability for the production trait BFiv was 0.27, and 0.48 for backfat thickness measured on carcass. Estimated heritabilities for meat quality traits ranged from 0.14 for meat brightness to 0.78 for the intramuscular fat content (IMF). Genetic correlations between BFiv and IMF were higher than estimates based on carcass backfat measurements (0.39 v. 0.25). The presence of the unfavorable n allele was associated with increased electric conductivity, paler meat and higher drip loss. The allele substitution effect on IMF was unfavorable, indicating lower IMF when the n allele is present. A breeding strategy including the phenotype (BFiv) combined with genetic marker information at the RYR1 locus from the selection candidate, resulted in a 20% increase in accuracy and selection response when compared with a breeding strategy without genetic marker information. peerReviewed

Abstract: We investigate the astrometric content of CCD charge images of stars collected in time delay integration (TDI) mode with a scanning (rotating) telescope. We focus on the ESA astrometric space mission Gaia, but the results are valid for other scanning telescopes too. The physical attitude of the telescope is shown to be unobservable. Instead, an effective astrometric attitude is observed which represents an average over the TDI exposure time. The effective astrometric attitudes "seen" by different instruments (in case of Gaia: Astro, Spectro, Astro with gates) differ in a non-trivial way. If e.g. the high-precision Astro attitude would be used for the astrometric exploitation of the Spectro data, the Spectro CCDs would be "seen" to float around on the focal plane by several milli-arcseconds. In addition we find that the TDI mode produces an attitude jitter with the period of TDI clocking. We prove that this is negligibly small in the case of Gaia. We point out that the effective instant of observation is not the instant of charge read-out from the CCDs, but about half an exposure time (i.e. up to a few seconds) earlier. This is particularly important for the astrometry of solar-system objects and for the photometry of rapidly varying objects. It is also relevant for all other objects because of the time dependence of aberration. It is not clear whether the differences between the astrometric attitudes of different instruments require separate attitude reconstructions, but an approximate transformation from Astro to Spectro probably will be sufficient.

Abstract: This report describes the occurrence of both pacemaker syndrome and a pacemaker-like syndrome (so-called “pseudopacemaker syndrome”) in a patient who exhibited an atrioventricular junctional rhythm probably on the basis of sick sinus syndrome. The clinical and hemodynamic manifestations of the two clinical situations were similar and associated with regular retrograde ventriculoatrial conduction. The abnormalities during the junctional rhythm were reproduced during ventricular pacing. Surprisingly, the occurrence of the pacemaker-like syndrome during junctional rhythm in patients with normal left ventricular function has rarely been described.

Abstract: We propose an object detection algorithm which is efficient and fast enough to be used in (almost) real time with the limited computer capacities onboard satellites. For stars below the saturation limit of the CCD detectors it is based on a four neighbourhood local maximum criterion in order to find the centre of a stellar image. For saturated stars it is based on the assumption that the image is increasing monotonically towards the centre in the unsaturated part of the image. The algorithm also calculates approximate stellar magnitudes and efficiently rejects most of the cosmics which would otherwise lead to a large number of false detections. The quality of the algorithm was evaluated with the help of a large set of simulated data for the DIVA satellite mission; different assumptions were made for the noise level, and the presence of cosmics or for a variable sky background. We could show that our algorithm fulfills the requirements for DIVA; only in the case of simulated images which included the bright galaxy M31 some fainter stars could not be detected in the galaxy's vicinity. Since stellar images contain large areas without any stars, we propose an additional block-skipping algorithm which can be coded on special-purpose hardware.

Abstract: We analyse assignment problems in which not every agent is controlled by the central planner. The free agents search for vacant tasks autonomously, guided by their own preferences. The central planner, aiming to maximise the total value of the assignment, must take into account the behaviour of the uncontrolled agents. We model this situation as an n + 1-player game played between n free agents and the central planner. We show that it is a weakly dominant strategy for the free agents to choose tasks according to their true preferences. Contrarily, the strategy of the central planner in the resulting Nash Equilibrium is highly complex – we prove that it corresponds to the solution of a mixed integer bilevel optimisation problem. Finally, we demonstrate how this program can be reduced to a computationally much more manageable disjoint bilinear program.

Abstract: Adenosine is frequently used in emergency departments and intensive care units for the termination of narrow complex tachycardias. Recently its utility in terminating wide complex tachycardias has been reported in the literature. Adenosine is generally felt to be a safe medication even though its proarrhythmic effects in the setting of narrow complex or supraventricular tachycardias have been well documented. Herein, we describe the first case to our knowledge of adenosine inducing ventricular fibrillation in a patient with a stable wide complex tachycardia that was subsequently proven to be ventricular tachycardia at electrophysiologic study.

Abstract: Fourier transform infrared transmission (FTIR) measurements of thin films of aqueous sulfuric and nitric acid and their ternary mixture were performed over a wide range of composition and temperature. On the basis of a systematic study of the spectra a database of optical constants for sulfuric acid (c ≤ 80 wt %) and nitric acid (c ≤ 50 wt %) for temperatures 183 ≤ T ≤ 293 K were obtained. A mixing rule is presented to calculate k(ν) and n(ν) spectra for H2SO4/HNO3/H2O solutions and validated against the new FTIR measurements of ternary solutions. This covers optical constants in the entire range of atmospheric relevance and is easily accessible for various applications, e.g., satellite aerosol observations.

Abstract: Fourier Transform Infra-Red (FTIR) analysis of thin ice films was performed in order to investigate the influence of Nitric Acid Trihydrate (NAT) coating on the lifetime of stratospheric ice particles in air subsaturated with respect to ice. Two sorts of experiments were performed in which NAT was either condensed from the gas phase onto preexisting ice films or was incorporated into growing ice films, which subsequently were subject to slow evaporation under controlled vapor pressure conditions. Neither a thermodynamically efficient sealing of the ice nor a significant kinetic slowing of its evaporation was observed. A possible alternative mechanism leading to a more efficient NAT coating is proposed.

Abstract: The Gaia payload ensures maximum passive stability using a single material, SiC, for most of its elements. Dedicated metrology instruments are, however, required to carry out two functions: monitoring the basic angle and refocusing the telescope. Two interferometers fed by the same laser are used to measure the basic angle changes at the level of $\mu$as (prad, micropixel), which is the highest level ever achieved in space. Two Shack-Hartmann wavefront sensors, combined with an ad-hoc analysis of the scientific data are used to define and reach the overall best-focus. 44. Freezing of HNO3/H2SO4/H2O Solutions at Stratospheric Temperatures: Nucleation Statistics and Experiments

Abstract: Calorimetric freezing experiments with aqueous sulfuric and nitric acid solutions are presented and applied to the formation of polar stratospheric clouds (PSCs). We show that the nucleation of hydrates from these solutions is a stochastic process and that nucleation rates and their uncertainties can be determined using Poisson statistics. Under thermodynamic equilibrium conditions above the ice frost point, the homogeneous nucleation rates of stratospheric aerosols are exceedingly low, ruling out homogeneous freezing as a pathway for PSC formation. Several stratospherically important substrates were tested concerning their ability to induce heterogeneous nucleation. None of the experiments indicated a relevant enhancement of the freezing probability of liquid aerosols. Moreover, the experiments reveal that the freezing process of the solutions under stratospheric conditions is limited by the nucleation rates of the hydrates, rather than their crystal growth rates, thus ruling out the possibility of a glassy state of stratospheric aerosol droplets. Also, we argue why a glacial state of the aerosols seems to be unlikely. The only processes leading to freezing of the hydrates appear to be the heterogeneous nucleation on water ice crystals forming below the frost point and the homogeneous freezing of almost binary HNO3/H2O droplets with H2SO4 concentrations below approximately 0.01 wt %.

Abstract: Physicochemical processes that generate and transform aerosols in jet aircraft plumes are discussed on the basis of theoretical models and recent observations of young contrails in the upper troposphere. The initial evolution of optical depth and ice water content under threshold contrail formation conditions is studied. Constrained by the measurements, a lower bound is deduced for the number density of ice crystals initially present in contrails. This bound serves as a visibility criterion for young contrails. An analysis of the primary contrail particles (aqueous solution droplets nucleated in situ, emitted insoluble combustion aerosols, and entrained background aerosols) reveals that only soot must he involved as ice forming nuclei if the visibility criterion is to be fulfilled. Possible activation pathways of the soot aerosols are investigated, including an analysis of their wetting behavior and droplet scavenging and heterogeneous nucleation properties. To support these investigations, results of laboratory experiments concerning contact angles of acidic solution droplets on carbonaceous surfaces and the freezing probability of sulfuric acid tetrahydrate are presented. Assuming that the soot particles acquire a liquid coating, heterogeneous freezing rates and their sensitivity on important parameters are studied.

However, not only the pure core-hole state but also shake-up and shake-off configurations contribute to conventionally excited spectra. Abstract: Electronic decay spectra of Ne, excited at the 1s threshold have been measured. Final states of the 2p −2 n ′p configuration are reached via 1s −1 n p intermediate states. Appreciable intensity from spectator shake transitions ( n ≠ n ′) is found and the predictions of a simple intensity model are evaluated. The model reproduces the experimental results at on-resonance excitation. At inter-resonance excitation an apparent excitation energy dependence of the shake probability is accounted for by electronic state-lifetime interference theory.

Abstract: Bulk freezing experiments have been performed with binary and ternary HNO3/H2SO4/H2O solutions containing original micrometeorites, ground samples of representative larger meteorites and other freezing nuclei of potential stratospheric importance. The experiments enable us to determine upper bounds for the heterogeneous freezing rates of sulfuric and nitric acid hydrates. Based on an analysis, of the meteoritic mass flux from space and of the modifications meteorites undergo when entering the atmosphere, the resulting morphology and surface area of extraterrestrial material in the stratosphere are estimated. From this micrometeorites gained from Antarctica are shown to be a good proxy for meteoritic surfaces in the stratosphere. In combination with this analysis the freezing experiments suggest that heterogeneous nucleation rates on micrometeorites ale too low to enhance freezing of polar stratospheric clouds above the frost point.

Abstract: Growth of one spherulite within a thin foil of polypropylene around one circular obstacle or around combinations of circular obstacles is investigated. For each obstacle there exists a region of shadow, seen from the nucleus of the spherulite, which influences the growth of the spherulite. Within any region of shadow the growth fronts are evolvents of the obstacle's boundary, because the spherulite grows isotropically. When two growth fronts belonging to one spherulite meet each other inside the shadow, an intrinsic grain boundary is formed for each obstacle. Additionally, growth of one spherulite around a rectangular obstacle and a spherical obstacle is investigated.

Abstract: In a foil of polypropylene two circularly growing spherulites which touch each other and finally form a common grain boundary are regarded. Another grain boundary is formed by one circularly growing spherulite which makes contact with a growing band and with the growing interior of a circular ring. All possible grain boundary formations are systemized. This is done theoretically using analytical planar curves geometry, and is done in most cases, experimentally with equidistant time marks.
