We report on the fabrication and characterization of planar waveguides in an Er-doped tungsten-tellurite glass by implantation of 3.5 MeV N+ ions. Implantations were carried out in a wide fluence range of 1·1016 ÷8 ·1016 ions/cm2. Waveguides were characterized by m-line spectroscopy and spectroscopic ellipsometry. Irradiation-induced refractive index modulation saturated around a fluence of 8 ·1016 ions/cm2. Waveguides operating at 1550 nm were obtained in that material using 3.5 MeV N+ ion implantation.

Inverted opal Ce-doped silica glasses (Ce : Si molar ratio 1 ⋅ 10−3 were prepared by a sol-gel method using opals of latex microspheres as templates. The rare earth is homogeneously dispersed in silica host matrix, as evidenced by the absence of segregated CeO2, instead present in monolithic Ce-doped SG with the same cerium content. This suggests that the nanometric dimensions of bridges and junctions of the host matrix in the inverted opal structures favor the RE distribution avoiding the possible segregation of CeO2.

In the past years, we have undertaken an extensive investigation of LMC and SMC star clusters based on HST data. We present photometry and astrometry of stars in 101 fields observed with the WFC/ACS, UVIS/WFC3 and NIR/WFC3 cameras. These fields comprise 113 star clusters. We provide differential-reddening maps and illustrate various scientific outcomes that arise from the early inspection of the photometric catalogs. In particular, we provide new insights on the extended main-sequence turn-off (eMSTO) phenomenon: i) We detected eMSTOs in two clusters, KMHK361 and NGC265, which had no previous evidence of multiple populations. This finding corroborates the conclusion that the eMSTO is a widespread phenomenon among clusters younger than ~2 Gyr. ii) The homogeneous color-magnitude diagrams (CMDs) of 19 LMC clusters reveal that the distribution of stars along the eMSTO depends on cluster age. iii) We discovered a new feature along the eMSTO of NGC1783, which consists of a distinct group of stars going on the red side of the eMSTO in CMDs composed of ultraviolet filters. Furthermore, we derived the proper motions of stars in the fields of view of clusters with multi-epoch images. Proper motions allowed us to separate the bulk of bright field stars from cluster members and investigate the internal kinematics of stellar populations in various LMC and SMC fields. As an example, we analyze the field around NGC346 to disentangle the motions of its stellar populations, including NGC364 and BS90, young and pre-MS stars in the star-forming region associated with NGC346, and young and old field stellar populations of the SMC. Based on these results and the fields around five additional clusters, we find that young SMC stars exhibit elongated proper-motion distributions that point toward the LMC, thus bringing new evidence for a kinematic connection between the LMC and SMC., Comment: 37 pages, 27 figures, accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics

We present the star formation history (SFH) of the Sculptor dwarf spheroidal galaxy based on deep g,r photometry taken with DECam at the Blanco telescope, focusing our analysis on the central region of the galaxy extended up to $\sim 3$ core radii. We have investigated how the SFH changes radially, subdividing the sampled area into four regions, and have detected a clear trend of star formation. All the SFHs show a single episode of star formation, with the innermost region presenting a longer period of star formation of $\sim 1.5$ Gyr and for the outermost region the main period of star formation is confined to $\sim 0.5$ Gyr. We observe a gradient in the mean age which is found to increase going towards the outer regions. These results suggest that Sculptor continued forming stars after the reionization epoch in its central part, while in the peripheral region the majority of stars probably formed during the reionization epoch and soon after its end. From our analysis Sculptor can not be considered strictly as a fossil of the reionization epoch., 13 pages, 12 figures. Accepted for publication in MNRAS

- Abstract
We report optical absorption and luminescence measurements in pure and trivalent neodymium (Nd3+) doped LaVO4 crystals up to 25 GPa. Nd3+ luminescence has been employed as a tool to follow the structural changes in the crystal. We also present band-structure and crystal-field calculations that provide the theoretical framework to accurately explain the observed experimental results. In particular, both optical absorption and luminescence measurements evidence that a phase transition takes place close to 12 GPa. They also provide information on the pressure dependence of the band-gap as well as the emission lines under compression. We found drastic changes in the optical properties of LaVO4 when the phase transition to a BaWO4-II structure occurs, which can be related to changes in the coordination number of vanadium ions and in the local sites of Nd3+. Reported results are analyzed in comparison with those of previous X-ray diffraction and Raman experiments, as well as with the features of related compounds. For the first time, a consistent picture is reported explaining the behavior of the optical and electronic properties of LaVO4 at high-pressures.

A spectroscopy analysis of Tb 3+ and Tb 3+ /Sm 3+ doped zinc phosphate glasses based on emission spectra and decay time profiles was performed. The Tb 3+ singly doped glass shows a green overall emission with x = 0.258 and y = 0.429 CIE1931 chromaticity coordinates, upon Tb 3+ excitation at 318 nm. Under co-excitations of Tb 3+ and Sm 3+ at 344, 361 and 374 nm, the Tb 3+ /Sm 3+ co-doped glasses display neutral and warm white overall emissions with CIE1931 chromaticity coordinates in ranges of x = 0.407–0.487 and y = 0.437–0.485, color temperature in the range of 2447–4024 K and quantum yield up to 12.38%, depending on the excitation wavelength and relative amount of Tb 3+ and Sm 3+ . In all cases, it was observed that the Sm 3+ emission is enhanced by the addition of Tb 3+ , which is correlated with a quenching of the Tb 3+ emission as consequence of a non-radiative Tb 3+ → Sm 3+ energy transfer process. The non-radiative nature of the energy transfer process was inferred by the shortening of the Tb 3+ emission decay time observed in the Tb 3+ /Sm 3+ co-doped zinc phosphate glasses. An analysis of the Tb 3+ emission decay time profiles by the Inokuti–Hirayama model suggests that an interaction electric dipole–dipole into the Tb 3+ –Sm 3+ clusters might dominate in the energy transfer process with efficiency and probability of 0.23–0.25 and 96.22–111.35 s −1 , respectively.

Double-spin asymmetries for production of charged pions and kaons in semi-inclusive deep-inelastic muon scattering have been measured by the COMPASS experiment at CERN. The data, obtained by scattering a 160 GeV muon beam off a longitudinally polarised NH_3 target, cover a range of the Bjorken variable x between 0.004 and 0.7. A leading order evaluation of the helicity distributions for the three lightest quarks and antiquark flavours derived from these asymmetries and from our previous deuteron data is presented. The resulting values of the sea quark distributions are small and do not show any sizable dependence on x in the range of the measurements. No significant difference is observed between the strange and antistrange helicity distributions, both compatible with zero. The integrated value of the flavour asymmetry of the helicity distribution of the light-quark sea, \Delta u-bar - \Delta d-bar, is found to be slightly positive, about 1.5 standard deviations away from zero., Comment: 13 pages, 5 figures

Synthetic garnet nanopowders of Y3Al5O12 (YAG) and Gd3Ga5O12 (GGG) were produced, and the occurrence of a broadband bright visible emission by nominally undoped YAG and GGG and Cr3+ doped GGG, depending on the environment pressure, as well as exciting on the pumping power, was demonstrated. The results indicate that high-intensity infrared laser irradiation in samples not only leads to heating (melting effects) but also produces visible broadband emission. Low pressure of the powders' environment favors the white light emission by lowering the threshold pumping power. A hypothesis on the nature of the emission is presented.

We present a determination of the gluon polarisation Delta g/g in the nucleon, based on the longitudinal double-spin asymmetry of DIS events with Q(2) > 1 (GeV/c)(2) including a pair of large transverse-momentum hadrons in the final state. The data were obtained by the COMPASS experiment at CERN using a 160 GeV/c polarised muon beam scattering off a polarised (LiD)-Li-6 target. The gluon polarisation is evaluated by a Neural Network approach for three intervals of the gluon momentum fraction x(g) covering the range 0.04 < x(g) < 0.27. The values obtained at leading order in QCD do not show any significant dependence on x(g). Their average is Delta g/g = 0.125 +/- 0.060 (stat.) +/- 0.063 (syst.) at average x(g) = 0.09 and a scale of mu(2) = 3 (GeV/c)(2).

The transverse target spin azimuthal asymmetry A(UT)(sin(phi-phi s)) in hard exclusive production of rho(0) mesons was measured at COMPASS by scattering 160 GeV/c muons off transversely polarised protons and deuterons. The measured asymmetry is sensitive to the nucleon helicity-flip generalised parton distributions E-q, which are related to the orbital angular momentum of quarks in the nucleon. The Q(2), x-B-j and p(T)(2) dependence of A(UT)(sin(phi-phi s)) is presented in a wide kinematic range: 1 (GeV/c)(2) < Q(2) < 10 (GeV/c)(2), 0.003 < xB(j) < 0.3 and 0.05 (GeV/c)(2) < p(T)(2) < 0.5 (GeV/c)(2) for protons or 0.10 (GeV/c)(2) < p(T)(2) < 0.5 (GeV/c)(2) for deuterons. Results for deuterons are obtained for the first time. The measured asymmetry is small in the whole kinematic range for both protons and deuterons, which is consistent with the theoretical interpretation that contributions from GPDs E-u and E-d approximately cancel. The inclusive double-spin asymmetry, A 1 p , has been measured at COMPASS in deep-inelastic polarised muon scattering off a large polarised NH3 target. The data, collected in the year 2007, cover the range Q 2 > 1 ( GeV / c ) 2 , 0.004 x 0.7 and improve the statistical precision of g 1 p ( x ) by a factor of two in the region x 0.02 . The new proton asymmetries are combined with those previously published for the deuteron to extract the non-singlet spin-dependent structure function g 1 NS ( x , Q 2 ) . The isovector quark density, Δ q 3 ( x , Q 2 ) , is evaluated from a NLO QCD fit of g 1 NS . The first moment of Δ q 3 is in good agreement with the value predicted by the Bjorken sum rule and corresponds to a ratio of the axial and vector coupling constants | g A / g V | = 1.28 ± 0.07 ( stat . ) ± 0.10 ( syst. ) .

Using 160GeV muon scattering data collected with the COMPASS experiment at CERN, the exclusive production of ωπ0 via virtual photons was studied. Selective population of a peak around 1250MeV is observed. Possible contributions from spin-parity 1- are searched for, inspecting decay angular correlations. In particular, the orientation of the ω decay plane may allow a distinction from the 1+ b 1(1235) state. Our observation is compared with indications of a $ \rho{^\prime}$ (1250) in annihilation and in γp .

The COMPASS experiment makes use of the CERN SPS high-intensitymuon and hadron beams for the investigation of the nucleon spin structure and the spectroscopy of hadrons. One or more outgoing particles are detected in coincidence with the incoming muon or hadron. A large polarized target inside a superconducting solenoid is used for the measurements with the muon beam. Outgoing particles are detected by a two-stage, large angle and large momentum range spectrometer. The setup is built using several types of tracking detectors, according to the expected incident rate, required space resolution and the solid angle to be covered. Particle identification is achieved using a RICH counter and both hadron and electromagnetic calorimeters. The setup has been successfully operated from 2002 onwards using a muon beam. Data with a hadron beam were also collected in 2004. This article describes the main features and performances of the spectrometer in 2004; a short summary of the 2006 upgrade is also given., 84 papes, 74 figures

Depending on the manganese concentration in the glass samples, the Mn2+ emission band appears in the wavelength range from 515 to 620 nm. This behavior depends on the possible coordination number, a result confirmed by different lifetimes and also different structure of the absorption spectra. (© 2007 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. We present a determination of the gluon polarisation Δg/g in the nucleon, based on the longitudinal double-spin asymmetry of DIS events with Q2>1 (GeV/c)2 including a pair of large transverse-momentum hadrons in the final state. The data were obtained by the COMPASS experiment at CERN using a 160 GeV/c polarised muon beam scattering off a polarised View the MathML source target. The gluon polarisation is evaluated by a Neural Network approach for three intervals of the gluon momentum fraction xg covering the range 0.04

The estimation of the uncertainty associated to the analytical methods is necessary in order to establish the comparability of results. Methods of Pt determination in biological fluids lack very often of information about uncertainty of results, with likely implications when results are used to interpret the mechanism of action of platinum compound or when they are considered to optimise the clinical therapies. An inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometer (ICP-MS) method for the determination of Pt in biological fluids (plasma, ultrafiltrate and urine) of patients treated with antitumor agents has been developed and validated. The limits of quantification (LOQ) in the three matrices were 1.0, 0.1, and 2.0 μg/l, respectively. Intraday and interday precisions and accuracies were in good agreement with the FDA criteria for the validation of analytical methods. The validation study was implemented by assessing the uncertainty evaluation for Pt determination in the different matrices according to EURACHEM/CITAC Guide.

The gluon polarisation in the nucleon was measured using open charm production by scattering 160 GeV/c polarised muons off longitudinally polarised protons or deuterons. The data were taken by the COMPASS collaboration between 2002 and 2007. A detailed account is given of the analysis method that includes the application of neural networks. Several decay channels of D^0 mesons are investigated. Longitudinal spin asymmetries of the D meson production cross-sections are extracted in bins of D^0 transverse momentum and energy. At leading order QCD accuracy the average gluon polarisation is determined as (Delta g/G)^LO=-0.06 +/- 0.21 (stat.) +/- 0.08 (syst.) at the scale ~13 (GeV/c)^2 and an average gluon momentum fraction ~ 0.11. For the first time, the average gluon polarisation is also obtained at next-to-leading order QCD accuracy as (Delta g/G)^NLO = -0.13 +/- 0.15 (stat.) +/- 0.15 (syst.) at the scale ~ 13 (\GeV/c)^2 and ~ 0.20., Comment: 35 pages, 13 figures and 13 tables

The COMPASS Collaboration at CERN has measured the transverse spin azimuthal asymmetry of charged hadrons produced in semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering using a 160 GeV positive muon beam and a transversely polarised NH_3 target. The Sivers asymmetry of the proton has been extracted in the Bjorken x range 0.003 0.03. The asymmetry is different from zero and positive also in the low x region, where sea-quarks dominate. The kinematic dependence of the asymmetry has also been investigated and results are given for various intervals of hadron and virtual photon fractional energy. In contrast to the case of the Collins asymmetry, the results on the Sivers asymmetry suggest a strong dependence on the four-momentum transfer to the nucleon, in agreement with the most recent calculations., Comment: 11 pages, 6 figures

COMPASS GPD DVMP Transverse asymmetry - Abstract
The transverse target spin azimuthal asymmetry View the MathML source in hard exclusive production of ρ0 mesons was measured at COMPASS by scattering 160 GeV/c muons off transversely polarised protons and deuterons. The measured asymmetry is sensitive to the nucleon helicity-flip generalised parton distributions Eq, which are related to the orbital angular momentum of quarks in the nucleon. The Q2, xBj and View the MathML source dependence of View the MathML source is presented in a wide kinematic range: View the MathML source, 0.003

The production of D* and D mesons in inelastic scattering of 160 GeV/c muons off a ^6LiD target has been investigated with the COMPASS spectrometer at CERN for 0.003 (GeV/c)^2 < Q^2 < 10 (GeV/c)^2 and 3x10^-5< x_Bj < 0.1. The study is based on 8100 events where a D^0 or anti D^0 is detected subsequently to a D*+ or D*- decay, and on 34000 events, where only a D^0 or anti D^0 is detected. Kinematic distributions of D*, D and K*_2 are given as a function of their energy E, transverse momentum p_T, energy fraction z, and of the virtual photon variables nu, Q^2 and x_Bj. Semi-inclusive differential D* production cross-sections are compared with theoretical predictions for D* production via photon-gluon fusion into open charm. The total observed production cross-section for D*+/- mesons with laboratory energies between 22 and 86 GeV is 1.9 nb. Significant cross-section asymmetries are observed between D*+ and D*- production for nu0.6., 22 pages, 12 figures and 2 tables

A rapid screening method, previously developed and validated for the determination of 60 PCB congeners in human serum by using high-resolution gas chromatography coupled with low-resolution mass spectrometry, was applied to the establishment of the reference values in the general population. The reliability of this method was further confirmed by analyzing ten serum samples, obtained from the same population group involved in the original study, by electron impact ionization with either low- or high-resolution mass spectrometry. Analyses in electron capture negative ionization mode were also performed for the determination of 'dioxin-like' isomers. The data were found to be in good accordance with one another, especially for the congeners of highest environmental significance. Then, 162 real serum samples were analyzed for the presence of PCBs. Comparison with the results from other studies reported in the literature showed that a similar profile was observed; the most abundant congeners were #153, #180, #138 and #170. A statistical analysis was performed to determine whether there were significant correlations between PCB concentrations and specific variables such as age, gender, and dietary habits.

IBFAN ,ALLATTAMENTO MATERNO ,OMS ,CODICE INTERNAZIONALE SULLA COMMERCIALIZZAZIONE SOSTITUTI LATTE MATERNO ,Farmacia ,UNICEF ,ANTROPOLOGIA MEDICA - Abstract

A BCR standard reference material of lichen (CRM 482) was used to validate an analytical procedure consisting of a microwave oven digestion associated with ICP-OES, ICP-MS and GFAAS techniques for the analysis of trace elements (Al, B, Ba, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, Pb, Ti, V and Zn) in biomonitor samples. Two different acid mixtures were used: (a) 7 ml of HNO3, 1 ml of H2O2; (b) 7 ml of HNO3, 1 ml of H2O2 and 200 microl of HF; all digestions were carried out using 100-250 mg samples brought to a final volume of 50 ml. The validation of the procedure was carried out by two laboratories in terms of accuracy and precision; the former was estimated as percentage recovery by comparing experimental data with certificate values; the latter evaluated according to ISO standard 5725. Real lichen samples were analysed too with the procedures above described. In certified CRM 482 and real lichen samples the procedure with HF showed higher recovery values for Al, Ti, V, Ba and Fe than the procedure without HF. For all the other elements the two procedures gave comparable results both in terms of accuracy and precision. The recovery obtained with HF procedure for all the elements was generally better than 90-103%.

The determination of the total content and the leachable aliquot by aqua regia dissolution of eight heavy metals (Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Mn, Ni, Pb, and Zn) in soils and sediments was developed by microwave digestion technique combined with inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry. A complete digestion of soils and sediments was achieved by using an acid mixture of HF–HCl–HNO3 (1:3:1); the microwave-irradiated closed vessel system used for the determination of aqua regia leachable quota, proved to be a viable alternative to the traditional reflux system. The experimental study was conducted using five BCR standard reference materials (CRM 141R ‘Calcareous Loam Soil’, CRM 142 ‘Light Sandy Soil’, CRM 143 ‘Sewage Sludge Amended Soil’, CRM 277 ‘Estuarine Sediment’ and CRM 320 ‘River Sediment’) in two laboratories with different microwave ovens and ICP-OES. Calculated recovery, repeatability, and reproducibility confirm the good performance of the procedures adopted. A Nested Design statistical analysis was carried out for both procedures and showed that the major source of variability in the analysis was due to ICP-OES measurements rather than microwave-assisted dissolution.

We present a measurement of the deuteron spin-dependent structure function g1d based on the data collected by the COMPASS experiment at CERN during the years 2002-2004. The data provide an accurate evaluation for Gamma_1^d, the first moment of g1d(x), and for the matrix element of the singlet axial current, a0. The results of QCD fits in the next to leading order (NLO) on all g1 deep inelastic scattering data are also presented. They provide two solutions with the gluon spin distribution function Delta G positive or negative, which describe the data equally well. In both cases, at Q^2 = 3 (GeV/c)^2 the first moment of Delta G is found to be of the order of 0.2 - 0.3 in absolute value., Comment: fits redone using MRST2004 instead of MRSV1998 for G(x), correlation matrix added

The cross section for production of charged hadrons with high transversemomenta in scattering of 160 GeV/c muons off nucleons at low photonvirtualities has been measured at the COMPASS experiment at CERN. The results, which cover transverse momenta from 1.1 to 3.6 GeV/c, are compared to anext-to-leading order perturbative Quantum Chromodynamics (NLO pQCD)calculation in order to evaluate the applicability of pQCD to this process inthe kinematic domain of the experiment. The shape of the calculateddifferential cross section as a function of transverse momentum is found to bein good agreement with the experimental data, but the normalization isunderestimated by NLO pQCD. This discrepancy may point towards the relevance ofterms beyond NLO in the pQCD framework. The dependence of the cross section onthe pseudo-rapidity and on the charge of the hadrons is also discussed.

The determination of trace elements in sea water was carried out by means of ion chromatography (IC) coupled with inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). The elimination of the matrix by the chromatographic technique allowed the determination of about twenty elements (rare earths, Co, Cu, Mn, Ni, Zn Pb and U) at ultra-trace levels. The calibration of the ICP-MS system was carried out using multi-elemental standard aqueous solutions. The use of a multi-elemental technique such as ICP-MS permitted the throughput of samples to be increased because the separation of the different analytes was not required. The detection limits obtained for most of the elements were in the range 1–50 ng/l and the recovery for all the elements under analysis was quantitative.

The COMPASS collaboration at CERN has investigated the \pi^- \gamma -> \pi^- \pi^- \pi^+ reaction at center-of-momentum energy below five pion masses, sqrt(s) < 5 m(\pi), embedded in the Primakoff reaction of 190 GeV pions impinging on a lead target. Exchange of quasi-real photons is selected by isolating the sharp Coulomb peak observed at smallest momentum transfers, t' < 0.001 (GeV/c)^2. Using partial-wave analysis techniques, the scattering intensity of Coulomb production described in terms of chiral dynamics and its dependence on the 3\pi-invariant mass m(3\pi) = sqrt(s) were extracted. The absolute cross section was determined in seven bins of $\sqrt{s}$ with an overall precision of 20%. At leading order, the result is found to be in good agreement with the prediction of chiral perturbation theory over the whole energy range investigated.

We report on the fabrication and characterization of planar waveguides in an Er-doped tungsten-tellurite glass by implantation of 3.5 MeV N + ions. Implantations were carried out in a wide fluence range of 1 · 10 16 8 · 10 16 ions/cm 2. Waveguides were characterized by m-line spectroscopy and spectroscopic ellipsometry. Irradiation-induced refractive index modulation saturated around a fluence of 8 · 10 16 ions/cm 2. Waveguides operating at 1550 nm were obtained in that material using 3.5 MeV N + ion implantation.

The COMPASS experiment at the CERN SPS has studied the diffractive dissociation of negative pions into the pi- pi- pi+ final state using a 190 GeV/c pion beam hitting a lead target. A partial wave analysis has been performed on a sample of 420000 events taken at values of the squared 4-momentum transfer t' between 0.1 and 1 GeV^2/c^2. The well-known resonances a1(1260), a2(1320), and pi2(1670) are clearly observed. In addition, the data show a significant natural parity exchange production of a resonance with spin-exotic quantum numbers J^PC = 1-+ at 1.66 GeV/c^2 decaying to rho pi. The resonant nature of this wave is evident from the mass-dependent phase differences to the J^PC = 2-+ and 1++ waves. From a mass-dependent fit a resonance mass of 1660 +- 10+0-64 MeV/c^2 and a width of 269+-21+42-64 MeV/c^2 is deduced.

The crystallization kinetics of amorphous Ge2Sb2Te5 (GST) thin films, generated by ion implantation, on top of crystalline GST, either in the cubic or hexagonal phase, was investigated by means of time resolved reflectivity measurements, x-ray diffraction, in situ transmission electron microscopy, and Raman analyses. The crystallization occurred at a lower temperature with respect to a fully amorphous film and in both cases the crystalline phase started growing at the underlying amorphous-crystalline (a-c) interface. However, it was not a solid phase epitaxial growth since cubic GST was always obtained, independent of the phase of the underlying crystal. We speculate that the a-c interface behaves as a continuous region of potential nucleation sites in the crystallization making the crystallization process more efficient.

The Collins and Sivers asymmetries for charged hadrons produced in deeply inelastic scattering on transversely polarised protons have been extracted from the data collected in 2007 with the CERN SPS muon beam tuned at 160 GeV/c. At large values of the Bjorken x variable non-zero Collins asymmetries are observed both for positive and negative hadrons while the Sivers asymmetry for positive hadrons is slightly positive over almost all the measured x range. These results nicely support the present theoretical interpretation of these asymmetries, in terms of leading-twist quark distribution and fragmentation functions., 9 Pages, 5 figures

We present a LO evaluation of helicity densities of valence, \Delta u_v+\Delta d_v, non-strange sea, \Delta\bar{u}+\Delta\bar{d}, and strange quarks, \Delta s (assumed to be equal to \Delta\bar{s}). They have been obtained from the inclusive asymmetry A_{3,d} and the semi-inclusive asymmetries A^{\pi+}_{1,d}, A^{\pi-}_{1,d}, A^{K+}_{1,d}, A^{K-}_{1,d} measured in polarised deep inelastic muon-deuteron scattering. The full deuteron statistics of COMPASS (years 2002-2004 and 2006) has been used. The data cover the range Q^2 > 1 (GeV/c)^2 and 0.004, Comment: 15 pages, 8 figures

In recent years identification of the geographical origin of food has grown more important as consumers have become interested in knowing the provenance of the food that they purchase and eat. Certification schemes and labels have thus been developed to protect consumers and genuine producers from the improper use of popular brand names or renowned geographical origins. As the tomato is one of the major components of what is considered to be the healthy Mediterranean diet, it is important to be able to determine the geographical origin of tomatoes and tomato-based products such as tomato sauce. The aim of this work is to develop an analytical method to determine rare earth elements (RRE) for the control of the geographic origin of tomatoes. The content of REE in tomato plant samples collected from an agricultural area in Piacenza, Italy, was determined, using four different digestion procedures with and without HF. Microwave dissolution with HN0 3 + H 2 O 2 proved to be the most suitable digestion procedure. Inductively coupled plasma quadrupole mass spectrometry (ICPQMS) and inductively coupled plasma sector field plasma mass spectrometry (ICPSFMS) instruments, both coupled with a desolvation system, were used to determine the REE in tomato plants in two different laboratories. A matched calibration curve method was used for the quantification of the analytes. The detection limits (MDLs) of the method ranged from 0.03 ng g -1 for Ho, Tm, and Lu to 2 ng g -1 for La and Ce. The precision, in terms of relative standard deviation on six replicates, was good, with values ranging, on average, from 6.0% for LREE (light rare earth elements) to 16.5% for HREE (heavy rare earth elements). These detection limits allowed the determination of the very low concentrations of REE present in tomato berries. For the concentrations of REE in tomato plants, the following trend was observed: roots > leaves > stems > berries.

Gd3Ga5O12 and Y3Al5O12 nanocrystalline powders codoped with Yb3+ and Tb3+ or Eu3+ have been prepared using the sol−gel Pechini method. Nanocrystals obtained by this technique exhibit a cubic phase with the Ia3d space group. Particles show a broad distribution of sizes and shapes, ranging from elongated to quasi-spherical particles of tens of nanometers. Optical properties such as photoluminescence and excitation spectra or lifetime measurements have been studied on these samples. Green/blue or red visible upconversion luminescence from Tb3+ 5D3, 5D4 → 7FJ, or Eu3+ 5D0 → 7FJ transitions, respectively, has been observed upon Yb3+ 2F7/2 → 2F5/2 excitation at 975 nm. A detailed investigation on the spectroscopy and excited state dynamics of these systems is extremely important in order to understand the upconversion processes.

The measurements of the Collins and Sivers asymmetries of identified hadrons produced in deep-inelastic scattering of 160 GeV/c muons on a transversely polarised 6LiD target at COMPASS are presented. The results for charged pions and charged and neutral kaons correspond to all data available, which were collected from 2002 to 2004. For all final state particles both the Collins and Sivers asymmetries turn out to be small, compatible with zero within the statistical errors, in line with the previously published results for not identified charged hadrons, and with the expected cancellation between the u- and d-quark contributions., Comment: 16 pages, 9 figures, added author Efremov, calculated pure kaon asymmetries instead of those for experimental kaon/pion mixture (mainly error affected)

An ICP-AES/GFAAS method is described for the determination of metals in sewage sludges following acid digestion in a microwave oven. Application of the method to BCR 144, 145 and 146 sewage sludge standards, gave results in agreement with BCR values. Recoveries were in the range 90-109% for HF/aqua regia digestion. Analysis of aqua regia extracts by ICP-AES was shown to produce data comparable to those reported by BCR.

This article reports the results of a study, conducted in the framework of the scientific activities of the Italian Society for Reference Values, aimed at defining reference values of urinary trans,trans-muconic acid (t,t-MA) in the general population not occupationally exposed to benzene. t,t-MA concentrations detected in 376 subjects of the resident population in three areas of Italy, two in central (Florence and southern Tuscany) and one in northern Italy (Padua), by three laboratories, compared by repeated interlaboratory controls, showed an interval of 14.4-225.0 microg/L (5th-95th percentile) and a geometric mean of 52.5 microg/L. The concentrations measured were influenced by tobacco smoking in a statistically significant way: Geometric mean concentrations were 44.8 microg/L and 76.1 microg/Ll in nonsmokers (264 subjects) and smokers (112 subjects), respectively. In the nonsmoking population, a significant influence of gender was found when concentrations were corrected for urinary creatinine, geometric mean concentrations being 36.7 microg/g creatinine in males (128 subjects) and 44.7 microg/g creatinine in females (136 subjects). The place of residence of subjects did not seem to influence urinary excretion of the metabolite, although personal inhalation exposure to benzene over a 24-h period showed slightly higher concentrations in Padua and Florence (geometric means of 6.5 microg/m(3) and 6.6 microg/m(3), respectively) than in southern Tuscany (geometric mean of 3.9 microg/m(3)). Concentration of t,t-MA in urine samples collected at the end of personal air sampling showed little relationship to personal inhalation exposure to benzene, confirming the importance of other factors in determining excretion of t,t-MA when concentrations in personal air samples are very low.
