We use the calibrations by Calamida et al. and by Hilker et al., and the standardised synthetic photometry in the v, b, and y Stromgren passbands from Gaia DR3 BP/RP spectra, to obtain photometric metallicities for a selected sample of 694233 old Galactic giant stars having |b|>20.0 and parallax uncertainties lower than 10%. The zero point of both sets of photometric metallicities has been shifted to to ensure optimal match with the spectroscopic [Fe/H] values for 44785 stars in common with APOGEE DR17, focusing on the metallicity range where they provide the highest accuracy. The metallicities derived in this way from the Calamida et al. calibration display a typical accuracy of ~0.1 dex and 1 sigma precision ~0.2 dex in the range -2.2 = -0.8. These results are confirmed and, consequently, the metallicities validated, by comparison with large sets of spectroscopic metallicities from various surveys. The newly obtained metallicities are used to derive metallicity distributions for several previously identified sub-structures in the Galactic halo with an unprecedented number of stars. We present the chemical composition of 206 red giant branch stars members of the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) using optical, high-resolution spectra collected with the multi-object spectrograph FLAMES-GIRAFFE at the ESO Very Large Telescope. This sample includes stars in three fields located in different positions within the parent galaxy. We analysed the main groups of elements, namely light- (Na), alpha- (O, Mg, Si, Ca, Ti), iron-peak (Sc, V, Fe, Ni, Cu) and s-process elements (Zr, Ba, La). The metallicity distribution of the sample displays a main peak around [Fe/H] ~ -1 dex and a weak metal-poor tail. However, the three fields display [Fe/H] distributions different with each other, in particular a difference of 0.2 dex is found between the mean metallicities of the two most internal fields.The fraction of metal-poor stars increases significantly (from ~1 to ~20%) from the innermost fields to the most external one, likely reflecting an age gradient in the SMC. Also, we found a hint of possible chemically/kinematic distinct substructures. The SMC stars have abundance ratios clearly distinct with respect to the Milky Way stars, in particular for the elements produced by massive stars (like Na, $\alpha$ and most iron-peak elements) that have abundance ratios systematically lower than those measured in our Galaxy. This points out that the massive stars contributed less to the chemical enrichment of the SMC with respect to the Milky Way, according to the low star formation rate expected for this galaxy. Finally, we identified small systematic differences in the abundances of some elements (Na, Ti, V and Zr) in the two innermost fields, suggesting that the chemical enrichment history in the SMC has been not uniform., Comment: 16 pages, 11 figures, 5 tables. Using Large Binocular Telescope deep imaging data from the Smallest Scale of Hierarchy Survey (SSH) and archival Hubble Space Telescope data, we reveal the presence of two elongated stellar features contiguous to a bar-like stellar structure in the inner regions of the dwarf irregular galaxy NGC 3741. These structures are dominated by stars younger than a few hundred Myr and collectively are about twice as extended as the old stellar component. These properties are very unusual for dwarf galaxies in the nearby Universe and difficult to explain by hydro-dynamical simulations. From the analysis of archival 21-cm observations, we find that the young stellar "bar" coincides with an HI high-density region proposed by previous studies to be a purely gaseous bar; we furthermore confirm radial motions of a few km/s, compatible with an inflow/outflow, and derive a steeply-rising rotation curve and high HI surface density at the center, indicating a very concentrated mass distribution. We propose that the peculiar properties of the stellar and gaseous components of NGC 3741 may be explained by a recent merger or ongoing gas accretion from the intergalactic medium, which caused gas inflows towards the galaxy center and triggered star formation a few hundred Myr ago. This event may explain the young and extended stellar features, the bar-like structure, the very extended HI disc and the central HI spiral arms. The high central HI density and the steeply rising rotation curve suggest that NGC 3741 may be the progenitor or the descendant of a starburst dwarf., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS. The Gaia-ESO Public Spectroscopic Survey is an ambitious project designed to obtain astrophysical parameters and elemental abundances for 100 000 stars, including large representative samples of the stellar populations in the Galaxy, and a well-defined sample of 60 (plus 20 archive) open clusters. We provide internally consistent results calibrated on benchmark stars and star clusters, extending across a very wide range of abundances and ages. This provides a legacy data set of intrinsic value, and equally a large wide-ranging dataset that is of value for the homogenisation of other and future stellar surveys and Gaia's astrophysical parameters. Aims. This article provides an overview of the survey methodology, the scientific aims, and the implementation, including a description of the data processing for the GIRAFFE spectra. A companion paper introduces the survey results. Methods. Gaia-ESO aspires to quantify both random and systematic contributions to measurement uncertainties. Thus, all available spectroscopic analysis techniques are utilised, each spectrum being analysed by up to several different analysis pipelines, with considerable effort being made to homogenise and calibrate the resulting parameters. We describe here the sequence of activities up to delivery of processed data products to the ESO Science Archive Facility for open use. Results. The Gaia-ESO Survey obtained 202 000 spectra of 115 000 stars using 340 allocated VLT nights between December 2011 and January 2018 from GIRAFFE and UVES. © G. Gilmore et al. 2022. Conclusions. The full consistently reduced final data set of spectra was released through the ESO Science Archive Facility in late 2020, with the full astrophysical parameters sets following in 2022. The star cluster (SC) age distribution of the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) exhibits a gap from $\sim$ 4 to 10 Gyr ago, with an almost total absence of SCs. Within this age gap, only two confirmed SCs have been identified hitherto. Nonetheless, the star field counterpart does not show the same characteristics, making the LMC a peculiar galaxy where star formation history and cluster formation history appear to differ significantly. We re-analyzed the color-magnitude diagram (CMD) of the KMHK 1762 SC by using the deep optical photometry provided by the "Yes, Magellanic Clouds Again" survey, to robustly assess its age. First, we partially removed foreground and/or field stars by means of parallaxes and proper motions obtained from the {\it Gaia} Early Data Release 3. Then, we applied the Automated Stellar Cluster Analysis package to the cleaned photometric catalogue to identify the isochrone that best matches the CMD of KMHK 1762. The estimated age of KMHK 1762 is $\log (t) = 9.74 \pm 0.15$ dex ($\sim$5.5 Gyr), that is more than 2 Gyr older than the previous estimation which was obtained with shallower photometry. This value makes KMHK 1762 the third confirmed age gap SC of the LMC. The physical existence of a quiescent period of the LMC SC formation is questioned. We suggest it can be the result of an observational bias, originated by the combination of shallow photometry and limited investigation of the LMC periphery., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures. We exploit the unique characteristics of a sample of open clusters (OCs) and field stars for which high-precision 7Li abundances and stellar parameters are homogeneously derived by the Gaia-ESO Survey (GES). We derive possibly undepleted 7Li abundances for 26 OCs and star forming regions with ages from young to old spanning a large range of Galactocentric distances, which allows us to reconstruct the local late Galactic evolution of lithium as well as its current abundance gradient along the disc. Field stars are added to look further back in time and to constrain 7Li evolution in other Galactic components. The data are then compared to theoretical tracks from chemical evolution models that implement different 7Li forges. We find that the upper envelope of the 7Li abundances measured in field stars of nearly solar metallicities traces very well the level of lithium enrichment attained by the ISM as inferred from observations of cluster stars. We confirm previous findings that the abundance of 7Li in the solar neighbourhood does not decrease at supersolar metallicity. The comparison of the data with the chemical evolution model predictions favours a scenario in which the majority of the 7Li abundance in meteorites comes from novae. Current data also seem to suggest that the nova rate flattens out at later times. This requirement might have implications for the masses of the white dwarf nova progenitors and deserves further investigation. Neutrino-induced reactions taking place in core-collapse supernovae also produce some fresh lithium. This likely makes a negligible contribution to the meteoritic abundance, but could be responsible for a mild increase of the 7Li abundance in the ISM of low-metallicity systems that would counterbalance the astration processes., 17 pages, 10 figures, 3 tables (full tables 1 and 3 only available at the CDS), accepted for publication in Astronomy and Astrophysics. We present FORS2@VLT follow-up photometry of YMCA-1, a recently discovered stellar system located 13° from the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) center. The deep color–magnitude diagram (CMD) reveals a well-defined main sequence (MS) and a handful of stars in the post-MS evolutionary phases. We analyze the YMCA-1 CMD by means of the automated isochrone-matching package ASteCA and model its radial density profile with a Plummer function. We find that YMCA-1 is an old ( 11.7 − 1.3 + 1.7 Gyr), metal-intermediate ([Fe/H] ≃ − 1.12 − 0.13 + 0.21 dex), compact (r h = 3.5 ± 0.5 pc), low-mass (M = 102.45±0.02 M ⊙), and low-luminosity (M V = −0.47 ± 0.57 mag) stellar system. The estimated distance modulus ( μ 0 = 18.72 − 0.17 + 0.15 mag), corresponding to about 55 kpc, suggests that YMCA-1 is associated with the LMC, but we cannot discard the scenario in which it is a Milky Way satellite. The structural parameters of YMCA-1 are remarkably different compared with those of the 15 known old LMC globular clusters. In particular, it resides in a transition region of the M V –r h plane, in between the ultrafaint dwarf galaxies and the classical old clusters, and close to SMASH-1, another faint stellar system recently discovered in the LMC surroundings.

We present the first analysis of the stellar content of the structures and substructures identified in the peculiar star-forming galaxy NGC5474, based on Hubble Space Telescope resolved photometry from the LEGUS survey. NGC5474 is a satellite of the giant spiral M101, and is known to have a prominent bulge that is significantly off-set from the kinematic center of the underlying HI and stellar disc. The youngest stars (age~ 100 Myr) trace a flocculent spiral pattern extending out to ~8 kpc from the center of the galaxy. On the other hand intermediate-age (age > 500 Myr) and old (age > 2 Gyr) stars dominate the off-centred bulge and a large substructure residing in the South Western part of the disc and not correlated with the spiral arms (SW over-density). The old age of the stars in the SW over-density suggests that this may be another signature of the dynamical interaction/s that have shaped this anomalous galaxy. We suggest that a fly by with M101, generally invoked as the origin of the anomalies, may not be sufficient to explain all the observations. We present a detailed analysis of the kinematic properties of the multiple populations (MPs) in the low-mass Galactic globular cluster NGC6362 based on a sample of about 500 member stars for which radial velocities (RVs), Fe and Na abundances have been homogeneously derived. At distances from the cluster center larger than about 0.5 $r_h$, we find that first (FG - Na-poor) and second generation (SG - Na-rich) stars show hints of different line-of-sight velocity dispersion profiles, with FG stars being dynamically hotter. This is the first time that differences in the velocity dispersion of MPs are detected by using only RVs. While kinematic differences between MPs in globular clusters are usually described in terms of anisotropy differences driven by the different radial distributions, this explanation seems hardly viable for NGC6362, where SG and FG stars are spatially mixed. We demonstrate that the observed difference in the velocity dispersion profiles can be accounted for by the effect of binary stars. In fact, thanks to our multi-epoch RV measurements we find that the binary fraction is significantly larger in the FG sample (f~14%) than in SG population (f, 18 pages, 6 figures; Accepted for publication in ApJ

We present two pilot studies for the search and characterization of accretion events in star-forming dwarf galaxies. Our strategy consists of two complementary approaches: i) the direct search for stellar substructures around dwarf galaxies through deep wide-field imaging, and ii) the characterization of the chemical properties in these systems up to large galacto-centric distances. We show our results for two star-forming dwarf galaxies, the starburst irregular NGC 4449, and the extremely metal-poor dwarf DDO 68.

We describe two ground based observing campaigns aimed at building a grid of approximately 200 spectrophotometric standard stars (SPSS), with an internal ~1% precision and tied to Vega within ~3%, for the absolute flux calibration of data gathered by Gaia, the ESA astrometric mission. The criteria for the selection and a list of candidates are presented, together with a description of the survey strategy and the adopted data analysis methods. We also discuss a short list of notable rejected SPSS candidates and difficult cases, based on identification problems, literature discordant data, visual companions, and variability. In fact, all candidates are also monitored for constancy (within \pm5 mmag, approximately). In particular, we report on a CALSPEC standard, 1740346, that we found to be a delta Scuti variable during our short-term monitoring (1-2 h) campaign.

We present new B, V and I CCD time-series photometry for 177 variable stars in a 13'X 13' field centered on the globular cluster M54 (lying at the center of the Sagittarius dwarf spheroidal galaxy), 94 of which are newly identified variables. The total sample is composed of 2 anomalous Cepheids, 144 RR Lyrae stars (108 RR0 and 36 RR1), 3 SX Phoenicis, 7 eclipsing binaries (5 W UMA and 2 Algol binaries), 3 variables of uncertain classification and 18 long-period variables. The large majority of the RR Lyrae variables likely belong to M54. Ephemerides are provided for all the observed short-period variables. The pulsational properties of the M54 RR Lyrae variables are close to those of Oosterhoff I clusters, but a significant number of long-period ab type RR Lyrae are present. We use the observed properties of the RR Lyrae to estimate the reddening and the distance modulus of M54, E(B-V)=0.16 +/- 0.02 and (m-M)_0=17.13 +/- 0.11, respectively, in excellent agreement with the most recent estimates. The metallicity has been estimated for a subset of 47 RR Lyrae stars, with especially good quality light curves, from the Fourier parameters of the V light curve. The derived metallicity distribution has a symmetric bell shape, with a mean of =-1.65 and a standard deviation sigma=0.16 dex. Seven stars have been identified as likely belonging to the Sagittarius galaxy, based on their too high or too low metallicity. This evidence, if confirmed, might suggest that old stars in this galaxy span a wide range of metallicities.

We report on the properties of 89 low mass star clusters located in the vicinity of luminous young clusters (blue globulars) in the disk of M31. 82 of the clusters are newly detected. We have determined their integrated magnitudes and colors, based on a series of Hubble Space Telescope Wide Field/Planetary Camera 2 exposures in blue and red (HST filters F450W and F814W). The integrated apparent magnitudes range from F450W = 17.5 to 22.5, and the colors indicate a wide range of ages. Stellar color-magnitude diagrams for all clusters were obtained and those with bright enough stars were fit to theoretical isochrones to provide age estimates. The ages range from 12 Myr to >500 Myr. Reddenings, which average E(F450 - F814) = 0.59 with a dispersion of 0.21 magnitudes, were derived from the main sequence fitting for those clusters. Comparison of these ages and integrated colors with single population theoretical models with solar abundances suggests a color offset of 0.085 magnitudes at the ages tested. Estimated ages for the remaining clusters are based on their measured colors. The age-frequency diagram shows a steep decline of number with age, with a large decrease in number per age interval between the youngest and the oldest clusters detected., 20 pages, 9 figures

We used a proper combination of multiband high-resolution and wide field multi-wavelength observations collected at three different telescopes (HST, LBT and CFHT) to probe Blue Straggler Star (BSS) populations in the globular cluster M53. Almost 200 BSS have been identified over the entire cluster extension. The radial distribution of these stars has been found to be bimodal (similarly to that of several other clusters) with a prominent dip at ~60'' (~2 r_c) from the cluster center. This value turns out to be a factor of two smaller than the radius of avoidance (r_avoid, the radius within which all the stars of ~1.2 M_sun have sunk to the core because of dynamical friction effects in an Hubble time). While in most of the clusters with a bimodal BSS radial distribution, r_avoid has been found to be located in the region of the observed minimum, this is the second case (after NGC6388) where this discrepancy is noted. This evidence suggests that in a few clusters the dynamical friction seems to be somehow less efficient than expected. We have also used this data base to construct the radial star density profile of the cluster: this is the most extended and accurate radial profile ever published for this cluster, including detailed star counts in the very inner region. The star density profile is reproduced by a standard King Model with an extended core (~25'') and a modest value of the concentration parameter (c=1.58). A deviation from the model is noted in the most external region of the cluster (at r>6.5' from the center). This feature needs to be further investigated in order to address the possible presence of a tidal tail in this cluster.

By means of deep FORS1@VLT and ACS@HST observations of a wide area in the stellar system omega Cen we measured the luminosity function of main sequence stars down to R=22.6 and I_{F814W}=24.5 . The luminosity functions obtained have been converted into mass functions and compared with analytical Initial Mass Functions (IMFs) available in the literature. The mass function obtained, reaching M~0.15 M_s, can be well reproduced by a broken power-law with indices alpha=-2.3 for M>0.5 M_s and alpha=-0.8 for M

We present the first results of a large spectroscopic survey of candidate globular clusters located in the extreme outskirts of the nearby M31 galaxy. We obtained low resolution spectra of 48 targets selected from the XSC of 2MASS, as in Galleti et al. (2005). The observed candidates have been robustly classified according to their radial velocity and by verifying their extended/point-source nature from ground-based optical images. Among the 48 observed candidates clusters we found 5 genuine remote globular clusters. One of them has been already identified independently by Mackey et al. (2007), their GC1; the other four are completely new discoveries: B516, B517, B518, B519. The newly discovered clusters lie at projected distance 40 kpc 40 kpc. At odds with the Milky Way, M31 appears to have a significant population of very bright globular clusters in its extreme outskirts., Comment: 16 pages including 6 pages published only in the electronic edition of the Journal. We present deep F606W, F814W ACS photometry of the recently discovered globular cluster B514, the outermost known globular in the M31 galaxy. The cluster appears quite extended and member stars are unequivocally identified out to ~200 pc from the center. The Color Magnitude Diagram reveals a steep Red Giant Branch (RGB), and a Horizontal Branch (HB) extending blue ward of the instability strip, indicating that B514 is a classical old metal-poor globular cluster. The RGB locus and the position of the RGB Bump are both consistent with a metallicity [Fe/H] ~ -1.8, in excellent agreement with spectroscopic estimates. A preliminary estimate of the integrated absolute V magnitude (M_V< -9.1) suggests that B514 is among the brightest globulars of M31.

We have used high spatial resolution data from the Hubble Space Telescope and wide-field ground-based observations to search for blue straggler stars (BSS) over the entire radial extent of the large stellar system omega Centauri. We have detected the largest population of BSS ever observed in any stellar system. Even though the sample is restricted to the brightest portion of the BSS sequence, more than 300 candidates have been identified. BSS are thought to be produced by the evolution of binary systems (either formed by stellar collisions or mass exchange in binary stars). Since systems like Galactic globular clusters (GGC) and omega Cen evolve dynamically on time-scales significantly shorter than their ages, binaries should have settled toward the center, showing a more concentrated radial distribution than the ordinary, less massive single stars. Indeed, in all GGCs which have been surveyed for BSS, the BSS distribution is peaked at the center. Conversely, in omega Cen we find that the BSS share the same radial distribution as the adopted reference populations. This is the cleanest evidence ever found that such a stellar system is not fully relaxed even in the central region. We further argue that the absence of central concentration in the BSS distribution rules out a collisional origin. Thus, the omega Cen BSS are the purest and largest population of non-collisional BSS ever observed. Our results allow the first empirical quantitative estimate of the production rate of BSS via this channel. We report on the discovery of a stellar system in the background of the Galactic globular cluster 47 Tucanae (NGC 104), located 14.8 arcmin North-West of the cluster center. The object, whose apparent diameter is D&simeq; 30 arcsec, is partially resolved into stars on the available CCD images, reaching a limiting magnitude of V~ 22.5, and is detected as a significant (more than 5 sigma) overdensity of blue stars (B-V

We report on the results of an extensive Very Large Telescope high-resolution imaging campaign of the central region of the giant globular cluster ω Centauri. More than 100000 stars have been measured in the inner 9 x 9 arcmin 2 region of the cluster. On the basis of multiband colour-magnitude diagrams, we confirm the existence of multiple stellar populations along the red giant branch (RGB). Moreover, thanks to the high precision of this data set, we conclude that the RGB does not present a smooth and continuous distribution, but shows a discrete structure: besides the metal-poor and the extreme metal-rich population (anomalous RGB), the existence of three metal intermediate populations is shown.

We present the chemical analysis of 49 giant stars of the globular cluster NGC 2419, using medium resolution spectra collected with the multi-object spectrograph DEIMOS@Keck. Previous analysis of this cluster revealed a large dispersion in the line strength of the infrared Ca II triplet, suggesting an intrinsic star-to-star scatter in its Fe or Ca content. From our analysis, we assess that all the investigated stars share the same [Fe/H], [Ca/Fe] and [Ti/Fe] abundance ratios, while a large spread in Mg and K abundances is detected. The distribution of [Mg/Fe] is bimodal, with ~40% of the observed targets having subsolar [Mg/Fe], down to [Mg/Fe] ~ -1 dex, a level of Mg-deficiency never observed before in globular clusters. It is found that the large dispersion in Mg abundances is likely the main origin of the observed dispersion of the Ca II triplet lines strengths (that can be erroneously interpreted in terms of Fe or Ca abundance scatter) because Mg plays a relevant role in the atmosphere of giant stars as an electron donor. A strong depletion in the Mg abundance leads to an increase of the line strength of the Ca II triplet, due to the variation in the electronic pressure, at a constant Fe and Ca abundance. Finally, we detect an anti-correlation between Mg and K abundances, not easily explainable within the framework of the current nucleosynthesis models., Accepted for publication in MNRAS (14 pages, 10 figures, 1 table)

We used archival Hubble Space Telescope WFC3 images to obtain the Luminosity Function of the remote globular cluster NGC2419 from two magnitudes above the Horizontal Branch level down to \sim3.0 magnitudes below the Turn Off point (to M_I\sim6.4), approximately covering the range of initial stellar masses 0.5 M_sun 0.8. These estimates provide useful constraints for dynamical models of the cluster that were forced to consider the stellar mass-to-light ratio as a (nearly) free parameter., Accepted for publication by MNRAS. We present a near-infrared J and K photometric catalog containing more than 73,000 stars in the central region of the giant Globular Cluster omega Centauri. This is the largest IR data-set ever published for this cluster and has been used to completely characterize the morphology and the properties of the Red Giant Branch (RGB). In particular, we concentrated our attention on (i) the anomalous RGB (RGB-a), recently discovered in this cluster and (ii) the RGB of the dominant metal poor population (RGB-MP) in both the infrared (K,J-K) and optical-infrared (K,V-K) color magnitude diagrams. The full set of morphological parameters and photometric indices has been measured and compared with the empirical relations by Ferraro et al. (2000). We find that the detailed photometric properties of the RGB-a are in full agreement with the recent spectroscopic metallicity estimates, that place it at the metal-rich extreme of the stellar population mix in omega Centauri., Comment: 10 pages, 14 figures, submitted to A&A

Using deep high-resolution multi-band images taken with the Very Large Telescope and the Hubble Space Telescope, we discovered a new anomalous sequence in the Color Magnitude Diagram of omega Cen. This feature appears as a narrow, well-defined Sub Giant Branch (SGB-a), which merges into the Main Sequence of the dominant cluster population at a magnitude significantly fainter than the cluster Turn-Off (TO). The simplest hypothesis assumes that the new feature is the extension of the anomalous Red Giant Branch (RGB-a) metal-rich population discovered by Lee et al. (1999) and Pancino et al. (2000). However, under this assumption the interpretation of the SGB-a does not easily fit into the context of a self-enrichment scenario within omega Cen. In fact, its TO magnitude, shape and extension are not compatible with a young, metal-rich population, as required by the self-enrichment process. The TO level of the SGB-a suggests indeed an age as old as the main cluster population, further supporting the extra-cluster origin of the most metal rich stars, as suggested by Ferraro, Bellazzini & Pancino (2002). Only accurate measurements of radial velocities and metal abundances for a representative sample of stars will firmly establish whether or not the SGB-a is actually related to the RGB-a and will finally shed light on the origin of the metal rich population of omega Cen.

We present an analysis of the asymmetries in the population of Galactic M-giant stars present in the 2MASS All Sky catalogue. Several large-scale asymmetries are detected, the most significant of which is a strong elliptical-shaped stellar over-density, close to the Galactic plane at (l=240, b=-8), in the constellation of Canis Major. A small grouping of globular clusters (NGC 1851, NGC 1904, NGC 2298, and NGC 2808), coincident in position and radial velocity, surround this structure, as do a number of open clusters. The population of M-giant stars in this over-density is similar in number to that in the core of the Sagittarius dwarf galaxy. We argue that this object is the likely dwarf galaxy progenitor of the ring-like structure that has recently been found at the edge of the Galactic disk. A numerical study of the tidal disruption of an accreted dwarf galaxy is presented. The simulated debris fits well the extant position, distance and velocity information on the ``Galactic Ring'', as well as that of the M-giant over-densities, suggesting that all these structures are the consequence of a single accretion event. The disrupted dwarf galaxy stream orbits close to the Galactic Plane, with a pericentre at approximately the Solar circle, an orbital eccentricity similar to that of stars in the Galactic thick disk, as well as a vertical scale height similar to that of the thick disk. This finding strongly suggests that the Canis Major dwarf galaxy is a building block of the Galactic thick disk, that the thick disk is continually growing, even up to the present time, and that thick disk globular clusters were accreted onto the Milky Way from dwarf galaxies in co-planar orbits., 13 pages, 18 figures (2 in colour), accepted for publication in MNRAS

We have obtained high-resolution, high signal-to-noise ratio spectra for six red giants in ? Centauri: three belong to the recently discovered metal-rich red giant branch (RGB-a; as defined by Pancino et al.) and three to the metal-intermediate population (RGB-MInt). Accurate iron, copper, and ?-element (Ca and Si) abundances have been derived and discussed. In particular, we have obtained the first direct abundance determination based on high-resolution spectroscopy for the RGB-a population, = -0.60 ? 0.15. Although this value is lower than previous estimates based on calcium triplet measurements, we confirm that this population is the most metal-rich in ? Cen. In addition, we have found a significant difference in the ?-element enhancement of the two populations. The three RGB-MInt stars have the expected overabundance, typical of halo and globular cluster stars: = 0.29 ? 0.01. The three RGB-a stars show, instead, a significantly lower ?-enhancement: = 0.10 ? 0.04. We have also detected an increasing trend of [Cu/Fe] with metallicity, similar to the one observed for field stars by Sneden et al. The observational facts presented in this Letter, if confirmed by larger samples of giants, are the first indication that supernovae Type Ia ejecta have contaminated the medium from which the metal-rich RGB-a stars have formed. The implications for current scenarios on the formation and evolution of ? Cen are briefly discussed.

MOONS is a new Multi-Object Optical and Near-infrared Spectrograph selected by ESO as a third generation instrument for the Very Large Telescope (VLT). The grasp of the large collecting area offered by the VLT (8.2m diameter), combined with the large multiplex and wavelength coverage (optical to near-IR: 0.8μm - 1.8μm) of MOONS will provide the European astronomical community with a powerful, unique instrument able to pioneer a wide range of Galactic, Extragalactic and Cosmological studies and provide crucial follow-up for major facilities such as Gaia, VISTA, Euclid and LSST. MOONS has the observational power needed to unveil galaxy formation and evolution over the entire history of the Universe, from stars in our Milky Way, through the redshift desert, and up to the epoch of very first galaxies and re-ionization of the Universe at redshift z>8-9, just few million years after the Big Bang. On a timescale of 5 years of observations, MOONS will provide high quality spectra for >3M stars in our Galaxy and the local group, and for 1-2M galaxies at z>1 (SDSS-like survey), promising to revolutionise our understanding of the Universe. The baseline design consists of ~1000 fibers deployable over a field of view of ~500 square arcmin, the largest patrol field offered by the Nasmyth focus at the VLT. The total wavelength coverage is 0.8μm-1.8μm and two resolution modes: medium resolution and high resolution. In the medium resolution mode (R~4,000-6,000) the entire wavelength range 0.8μm-1.8μm is observed simultaneously, while the high resolution mode covers simultaneously three selected spectral regions: one around the CaII triplet (at R~8,000) to measure radial velocities, and two regions at R~20,000 one in the J-band and one in the H-band, for detailed measurements of chemical abundances. © (2014) COPYRIGHT Society of Photo-Optical Instrumentation Engineers (SPIE). The absolute I magnitude of the Tip of the Red Giant Branch M_I(TRGB) is one of the most promising Standard Candles actually used in astrophysics as a fundamental pillar for the Cosmological Distance Scale. With the aim of improving the observational basis of its calibration, we have obtained an accurate estimate of the M_I(TRGB) for the globular cluster Omega Centauri, based (a) on the largest photometric database ever assembled for a globular, by Pancino et al.(2000), and (b) on a direct distance estimate for Omega Cen, recently obtained by Thompson et al.(2001) from a detached eclipsing binary. The derived value M_I(TRGB) =-4.04\pm 0.12 provides, at present, the most accurate empirical zero-point for the calibration of the M_I(TRGB) - [Fe/H] relation, at [Fe/H] ~ -1.7. We also derived a new empirical M_I(TRGB) - [Fe/H] relation, based on the large IR dataset of red giants in Galactic Globular Clusters recently presented by Ferraro et al.(2000). This database (extending up to [Fe/H]=-0.2) covers a more appropriate metallicity range, for extragalactic applications, than previous empirical calibrations (limited to [Fe/H]

We report on the complex structure of the red giant branch (RGB) of omega Centauri, based on a new wide-field and wide-color baseline B and I photometry. Our color-magnitude diagram (CMD) shows the presence of multiple populations along this branch; in particular, we discovered an anomalous branch (RGB-a), which appears to be well separated from the bulk of the RGB stars. On the basis of our CMD and from the previous literature, we conclude that (1) these stars, clearly identified as a separate population in our CMD, represent the extreme metal-rich extension (sqbl0;Casolm0;Hsqbr0;-0.3) of the stellar content of omega Cen and show anomalous abundances of s-process elements (as Ba and Zr) as well; (2) they are physical members of the omega Cen system; (3) they comprise approximately 5% of the stars of the whole system; and (4) this component and the metal intermediate one (-0.4sqbl0;Casolm0;Hsqbr0;-1) have been found to share the same spatial distribution, both of them differing significantly from the most metal-poor one (sqbl0;Casolm0;Hsqbr0;-1). This last piece evidence supports the hypothesis that metal-rich components could belong to an independent (proto?) stellar system captured in the past by omega Cen.

We present first results of a large photometric survey devoted to study the star formation history of the Sagittarius dwarf spheroidal galaxy (Sgr dSph). Three wide strips (9 X 35 arcmin^2) located at l~5 and b=-16, -14, -12 have been observed. Each strip is roughly EW oriented, nearly along the major axis of the galaxy. A control field (~9 X 24 arcmin^2), located outside the body of Sgr dSph has also been observed for statistic decontamination purposes. Accurate and well calibrated V,I photometry down to V~22 have been obtained for \~90000 stars toward the Sgr dSph, and ~8000 stars in the control field. This is the largest photometric sample (covering the widest spatial extension) ever observed in the Sgr dSph up to now. The main new results presented in this paper are: (1) the possible discovery of a strong asymmetry in the distribution of stars along the major axis, since the north-western arm of the Sgr galaxy (i.e. the region nearer to the Galactic Bulge) apparently shows a significant deficiency of Sgr stars and (2) the first direct detection of a very metal poor (and presumably old) population in the Sgr stellar content. Hints for a metallicity gradient toward the densest region of the galaxy are also reported.

We present deep V,I CCD photometry of the globular cluster Terzan 8, recently found to be a member of the globular cluster system of the Sagittarius dwarf spheroidal galaxy. We accurately estimate the metallicity of Ter 8 and provide the first direct determination of the color excess toward this cluster. Our robust age estimate confirms that this cluster is indeed coeval with typical galactic globulars of comparable metal content, and thus it is probably significantly older than at least two other Sagittarius clusters, Terzan 7 and Arp 2. We derive the age difference between NGC 288 and NGC 362 using the bimodal horizontal branch (HB) of NGC 1851 as a “bridge” in the CMD analysis. Our results suggest that NGC 288 is older than both NGC 362 and NGC 1851 by ⋍ 2 ± 1 Gyr. A new grid of synthetic HBs discloses that age may be the second parameter (2ndP) for this pair provided that the Carretta & Gratton (1997) metallicity scale is to be preferred over the Zinn & West (1984) scale. In addition, the dispersion in ZAHB mass is found to be about twice as large in NGC 362 as in NGC 288, probably due to the much higher central density of the former.

One of the key science goals for a diffraction limited imager on an Extremely Large Telescope (ELT) is the resolution of individual stars down to faint limits in distant galaxies. The aim of this study is to test the proposed capabilities of a multi-conjugate adaptive optics (MCAO) assisted imager working at the diffraction limit, in IJHK$_s$ filters, on a 42m diameter ELT to carry out accurate stellar photometry in crowded images in an Elliptical-like galaxy at the distance of the Virgo cluster. As the basis for realistic simulations we have used the phase A studies of the European-ELT project, including the MICADO imager (Davies & Genzel 2010) and the MAORY MCAO module (Diolaiti 2010). We convolved a complex resolved stellar population with the telescope and instrument performance expectations to create realistic images. We then tested the ability of the currently available photometric packages STARFINDER and DAOPHOT to handle the simulated images. Our results show that deep Colour-Magnitude Diagrams (photometric error, $\pm$0.25 at I$\ge$27.2; H$\ge$25. and K$_s\ge$24.6) of old stellar populations in galaxies, at the distance of Virgo, are feasible at a maximum surface brightness, $��_V \sim$ 17 mag/arcsec$^2$ (down to M$_I > -4$ and M$_H \sim$ M$_K > -6$), and significantly deeper (photometric error, $\pm$0.25 at I$\ge$29.3; H$\ge$26.6 and K$_s\ge$26.2) for $��_V \sim$ 21 mag/arcsec$^2$ (down to M$_I \ge -2$ and M$_H \sim$ M$_K \ge -4.5$). The photometric errors, and thus also the depth of the photometry should be improved with photometry packages specifically designed to adapt to an ELT MCAO Point Spread Function. We also make a simple comparison between these simulations and what can be expected from a Single Conjugate Adaptive Optics feed to MICADO and also the James Webb Space Telescope., 17 pages, 22 figures, accepted on A&A

Surface brightness profiles for 23 M31 star clusters were measured using images from the Wide Field Planetary Camera 2 on the Hubble Space Telescope, and fitted to two types of models to determine the clusters' structural properties. The clusters are primarily young (~10^8 yr) and massive (~10^(4.5) M_⊙), with median half-light radius 7 pc and dissolution times of a few Gyr. The properties of the M31 clusters are comparable to those of clusters of similar age in the Magellanic Clouds. Simulated star clusters are used to derive a conversion from statistical measures of cluster size to half-light radius so that the extragalactic clusters can be compared to young massive clusters in the Milky Way. All three sets of star clusters fall approximately on the same age-size relation. The young M31 clusters are expected to dissolve within a few Gyr and will not survive to become old, globular clusters. However, they do appear to follow the same fundamental plane (FP) relations as old clusters; if confirmed with velocity dispersion measurements, this would be a strong indication that the star cluster FP reflects universal cluster formation conditions.

We report the detection of a stellar density cusp and a velocity dispersion increase in the center of the globular cluster M54, located at the center of the Sagittarius dwarf galaxy (Sgr). The central line of sight velocity dispersion is 20.2 +/- 0.7 km/s, decreasing to 16.4 +/- 0.4 km/s at 2.5" (0.3 pc). Modeling the kinematics and surface density profiles as the sum of a King model and a point-mass yields a black hole (BH) mass of ~ 9400 M_sun. However, the observations can alternatively be explained if the cusp stars possess moderate radial anisotropy. A Jeans analysis of the Sgr nucleus reveals a strong tangential anisotropy, probably a relic from the formation of the system., Accepted for publication by The Astrophysical Journal (Letters). We present the results of a survey of radial velocities over a wide region extending from r~10 arcmin out to r~80 arcmin (~1.5 tidal radii) within the massive star cluster omega Centauri. The survey was performed with FLAMES@VLT, to study the velocity dispersion profile in the outer regions of this stellar system. We derived accurate radial velocities for a sample of 2557 newly observed stars, identifying 318 bona-fide cluster red giants. Merging our data with those provided by Pancino et al. (2007), we assembled a final homogeneous sample of 946 cluster members that allowed us to trace the velocity dispersion profile from the center out to r~32 arcmin. The velocity dispersion appears to decrease monotonically over this range, from a central value of sigma_{v}~17.2 Km/s down to a minimum value of sigma_{v}~5.2 Km/s. The observed surface brightness profile, rotation curve, velocity dispersion profile and ellipticity profile are simultaneously well reproduced by a simple dynamical model in which mass follows light, within the classical Newtonian theory of gravitation. The comparison with an N-body model of the evolution of a system mimicking omega Cen during the last 10 orbits into the Galactic potential suggests that (a) the rotation of stars lying in the inner ~20 arcmin of the clusters is not due to the effects of the tidal field of the Milky Way, as hypothized by other authors, and (b) the overall observational scenario is still compatible with the possibility that the outer regions of the cluster are subject to some tidal stirring., Comment: 12 pages, 12 figures, accepted for publication by MNRAS

We present the results of a deep photometric survey performed with FORS1@VLT aimed at investigating the complex Main Sequence structure of the stellar system omega Centauri. We confirm the presence of a double Main Sequence and identify its blue component (bMS) over a large field of view up to 26' from the cluster center. We found that bMS stars are significantly more concentrated toward the cluster center than the other "normal" MS stars. The bMS morphology and its position in the CMD have been used to constrain the helium overabundance required to explain the observed MS morphology., Comment: 15 pages, 10 figures, accepted for publication by ApJ

We present results of an extensive spectroscopic survey of Subgiant stars in the stellar system omega Centauri. Using infrared CaII triplet lines, we derived metallicities and radial velocities for more than 250 stars belonging to different stellar populations of the system. We find that the most metal rich component, the anomalous Sub Giant Branch (SGB-a), has a metallicity of [Fe/H] -0.6 fully compatible with that determined along the anomalous Red Giant Branch (RGB-a). Our analysis suggests that the age of this component and of the other metal-intermediate (-1.4 < [Fe/H] < -1.0) stellar populations of the system are all comparable to that of the dominant metal poor population within 2 Gyr regardless of any choice of helium abundance. These results impose severe constraints on the time-scale of the enrichment process of this stellar system, excluding the possibility of an extended star formation period. Near-infrared spectra of 21 giants in omega Centauri, spanning the whole range of metallicities observed in this cluster, are presented. This work is part of a coordinated photometric and spectroscopic campaign in the optical and in the infrared, aimed at studying the complex stellar population of omega Centauri and understanding its formation and chemical evolution. By analyzing the several CO and OH molecular bands and atomic lines in the spectra of the selected giants, metal abundances and abundance ratios have been obtained. Recent wide-field photometric surveys (Lee et al.; Pancino et al.) have shown the existence of a previously unknown metal-rich ([Fe/H] -0.6) stellar population in the galactic globular cluster omega Centauri. The discovery of this new component, which comprises only a small percentage (~5%) of the entire cluster population, has added a new piece to the already puzzling picture of the star formation and chemical evolution of this stellar system. In this Letter we show that stars belonging to the newly discovered metal-rich population have a coherent bulk motion with respect to the other cluster stars, thus demonstrating that they formed in an independent self-gravitating stellar system. This is the first clear-cut evidence that extreme metal-rich stars were part of a small stellar system (a satellite of omega Centauri?) that has been accreted by the main body of the cluster. We present the first results of a deep WFPC2 photometric survey of the loose galactic globular cluster NGC 288. The fraction of binary systems is estimated from the color distribution of objects near the main sequence (MS) with a method analogous to that introduced by Rubenstein & Bailyn. We have unequivocally detected a significant population of binary systems with a radial distribution that has been significantly influenced by mass segregation. In the inner region of the cluster (rh~=1.6rc) the binary fraction (fb) lies in the range 0.08-0.38 regardless of the assumed distribution of mass ratios, F(q). The most probable fb lies between 0.10 and 0.20 depending on the adopted F(q). On the other hand, in the outer region (r>=1rh), fb must be less than 0.10, and the most likely value is 0.0, independently of the adopted F(q). The detected population of binaries is dominated by primordial systems. The specific frequency of blue stragglers (BSs) is exceptionally high, suggesting that the BS production mechanism via binary evolution can be very efficient. A large population of BSs is possible even in low-density environments if a sufficient reservoir of primordial binaries is available. The observed distribution of BSs in the color-magnitude diagram is not compatible with a rate of BS production that has been constant in time, if it is assumed that all the BSs are formed by the merging of two stars. We report on new WFPC2 observations of the globular cluster NGC 288, focusing our attention on peculiar stars. A very pronounced binary sequence, paralleling the ordinary Main Sequence (MS) is clearly observed in the Color Magnitude Diagram (CMD) and a huge relative fraction of Blue Straggler Stars is measured. The dataset offers the opportunity of studying the evolution of a large population of binaries (and binary evolution by-products) in a low density environment, where the evolution of such systems is not dominated by collisions and encounters. Three (very) Extreme Horizontal Branch Stars have been found, all lying outside of the cluster core

The main characteristics of a wide photometric survey of the Sgr dwarf spheroidal galaxy are shortly presented. V and I photometry has been obtained for ~ 90000 stars toward Sgr and for ~ 9000 stars in a region devoid of Sgr stars (for decontamination purposes). The full potential of this large database is far from being completely explored. Here we present only preliminary results from the analysis of statistically decontaminated Color Magnitude Diagrams, trying to set a scheme of the Star Formation History of the Sgr Galaxy. A scenario is proposed in which star formation in Sgr began very early and lasted for several Gyr with progressive chemical enrichment of the Inter Stellar Medium (ISM). Nearly 8 Gyr ago the star formation rate abruptly decreased, perhaps in coincidence with the event that led to the gas depletion of the galaxy. Candidate RR Lyrae variables have been identified for the first time in four globular clusters of the Andromeda galaxy (M31). Using HST-WFPC2 archive observations we have found 2, 4, 11 and 8 RR Lyrae variables of both ab and c Bailey types in G11, G33, G64 and G322 (Sargent et al., 1977), respectively. These numbers are quite consistent with the horizontal branch morphology exhibited by the four clusters.
