Geophysical data provide the chance to investigate a volcano’s dynamics; in particular, considerable information can be gleaned on the stress and strain patterns accompanying the internal processes and the effect of magma ascent on the main structures triggering earthquakes. Here, we analysed in detail the seismicity recorded over the last two decades on Etna volcano, in central Mediterranean. We focused on earthquake and focal mechanism distribution and clustering; in addition, the ground deformation pattern affecting the volcanic edifice was considered to evaluate the inflation and deflation phases. Analysed data were compared in order to shed light on possible relationships with the volcanic activity and to better understand the internal dynamics of the volcano over time. Major steps during or shortly before major eruptions in the seismic strain release and ground deformation temporal series highlight a straightforward relationship between seismicity occurring at shallow level, inflation/deflation and volcanism. Furthermore, at depths greater than 5–7 km, down to about 20 km, the orientation of the P- and T-axes clearly indicate the existence of a pressure source in the central part of the volcano. All the results underline that the stress field related to the volcano plumbing system interferes with the regional field, partly overriding it.

To compare the analgesic effect of three treatments to relieve the pain produced by intramuscular injections (IMI) in term newborns, and to assess sex-linked differences in their response to pain.We studied 62 babies. Each baby received antibiotic IMIs for clinical aims. During each IMI, one of the following analgesic treatments was utilized: oral 33% glucose (OG), sensorial saturation (SS), or topic anesthetic cream (TAC). SS is a validated analgesic method, based on the combination of three stimulations (tactile, acoustic and gustative). During the IMI, pain level was assessed with the use of the DAN scale, a validated neonatal pain scale. All babies who received three distinct analgesic procedures for three distinct IMIs were enrolled. Mean pain scores of the three analgesic treatment groups were compared. We then compared mean pain scores of females vs males in the whole cohort and within each treatment group.The 95% Confidence Intervals of pain scores were 5.6-6.5 for TAC, 1.4-2.3 for OG and 0.6-1.2 for SS: when treated with TAC, babies' pain scores were significantly higher than with OG or SS (p0.0001); when treated with OG, babies' pain scores were higher than SS (p = 0.002). Females' mean pain score was significantly higher than males' mean pain score: (95% CI: 2.9-4.1 vs 2.0-3.1; p = 0.01). OG and SS produced significantly higher mean DAN scores in females than in males. Also in the TAC group females' mean DAN scores were higher than males, though this last difference was not statistically significant.This is the first study to show the effectiveness of nonpharmacologic analgesia in relieving IMI pain. It is also the first study to clearly show that the sex differences in pain perception are present since birth.

Purpose Intravesical instillation of Gemcitabine may represent a useful second-line chemotherapy in case of non-muscle-invasive bladder cancer. Herein, we reported our experience with intravesical Gemcitabine in a group of patients affected by high-grade transitional cell carcinoma (TCC) of the bladder. Materials and Methods We retrospectively analyzed a total of 17 patients (15 males and 2 females), affected by high-risk superficial bladder cancer, who were refractory, intolerant or not eligible to intravesical BCG immunotherapy. Each patient received 2000 mg of Gemcitabine diluted in 100 mL of 0.9% saline solution, administered twice a week for 6 weeks. At start, TCC stage and grade were: CIS in 10 patients, TaG3 in 5 and T1G3 in the remaining 2 cases. Those with no macroscopic lesion and negative cytology and histology were considered as complete responders; those with only positive cytology as partial responders, and those with positive biopsy or evidence of macroscopic lesions as non-responders. Results Patients’ mean age was 71.5 yrs (± 7.3 yrs standard deviation). Overall, median follow-up was 12 months [interquartile range (IQR) 9–15 months]. A complete remission was achieved in 10 cases (58.8%), a partial response in 2 (11.8%), while 5 patients (29.4%) were considered as non-responders. Tumor stage and/or grade progression was observed in 26.7% of the cases. Overall, the 6-month recurrence-free survival was 33.3%. Drug toxicity was relatively low: 2 patients developed a grade II dysuria (NCI-CTC criteria); fever >38° was observed in 1 case. Conclusions Although our experience and follow-up are still rather limited to formulate any conclusive assessment, our study seems to confirm that Gemcitabine could be used as a safe and efficient intravesical chemotherapy agent even in high grade TCCs, representing a promising second-line option in those cases who failed, were intolerant or not eligible to BCG therapy. Headache and muscle-skeletal pain are among the most diffuse kinds of pain in children and adolescents. To know the prevalence of these kinds of pain and the possible association with life habits in modern society, a study on 110 children attending a Tuscany secondary school has been carried out. Twenty-six students referred headache or muscle-skeletal pain and sixty-nine both of them. Headache had a higher prevalence in females (53% vs 46%), while muscle-skeletal pain was prevalent in males (54% vs 46%). Low back pain was present especially at the awakening (24%) or following sitting position (11,5%), while the transport of school books was often accompanied by muscular pain (47%). Sport activity was associated to muscleskeletal pain (72%), as well as the forced and prolonged hypermotility (63%). From this study emerges that the presence of pain is particularly high in subjects in school age, and that some life habits are associated with its appearance.

We developed a functional semi-structured scale to observe Hemineglect symptoms in Activities of Daily Living (H-ADL). The scale could assist clinicians in assessing rehabilitation priorities aimed at correcting any persisting errors or omissions. In addition, the scale could also be used by caregivers to observe patients' progress and improve their participation. Two groups of right brain-damaged patients (25 with hemineglect; 27 without hemineglect) were tested twice: at admission and before discharge from hospital. A control group of healthy individuals matched to patients for age and education and patients' caregivers also participated. Two raters (A; B), experts in neuropsychology, observed patients and healthy individuals using the H-ADL. We found that the H-ADL final scores correlated with the standard hemineglect tests. The three groups differed in performance and differences also emerged between the first and the second assessment, suggesting an improvement due to the remission of hemineglect as a consequence of the treatment. Raters A and B did not differ in their observations, but there were some discrepancies with caregivers' observations. Therefore, although caregivers could help clinicians in detecting persistent hemineglect behaviour, the assessment should be performed by experts in neuropsychology.

The vitrification of an hazardous iron-rich waste (W), arising from slag flotation of copper production, was studied. Two glasses, containing 30 wt% W were melted for 30 min at 1400 °C. The first batch, labeled WSZ, was obtained by mixing W, blast furnace slag (S) and zeolite tuff (Z), whereas the second, labeled WG, was prepared by mixing W, glass cullet (G), sand and limestone. The glass frits showed high chemical durability, measured by the TCLP test. The crystallization of the glasses was evaluated by DTA. The crystal phases formed were identified by XRD resulting to be pyroxene and wollastonite solid solutions, magnetite and hematite. The morphology of the glass–ceramics was observed by optical and scanning electron microscopy. WSZ composition showed a high rate of bulk crystallization and resulted to be suitable for producing glass–ceramics by a short crystallization heat-treatment. WG composition showed a low crystallization rate and good sinterability; glass–ceramics were obtained by sinter-crystallization of the glass frit.

A glass ceramic composite was obtained by sinter-crystallisation of vitrified municipal solid waste bottom ashes with the addition of various percentages of alumina waste. The sintering was investigated by differential dilatometry and the crystallisation of the glass particles by differential thermal analysis. The crystalline phases produced by the thermal treatment were identified by X-ray diffraction analysis. The sintering process was found to be affected by the alumina addition and inhibited by the beginning of the crystal-phase precipitation. Scanning electron microscopy was performed on the fractured sintered samples to observe the effect of the sintering. Young's modulus and the mechanical strength of the sintered glass ceramic and composites were determined at different heating rates. The application of high heating rate and the addition of alumina powder improved the mechanical properties. Compared to the sintered glass ceramic without additives, the bending strength and the Young's modulus obtained at 20 degrees C/min, increased by about 20% and 30%, respectively.

In the present study, the sinter-crystallization behavior of a glass from municipal solid waste incineration ashes was investigated. The crystallization kinetics were estimated by DTA at different heating rates and the formed crystalline phases were evaluated by XRD. The sintering was studied at different heating rates and at different holding temperatures by dilatometry, measuring the % of linear shrinkage, while the structure of the sintered samples was observed by SEM. The bending strength and the Young modulus were evaluated after heating at 5 and 20 K/min and 1 h holding at 1123 K. The DTA show two overlapped crystallization peaks, corresponding to 440 and 430 kJ/mol activation energies of crystallization. The XRD highlight that the crystallization starts by pyroxene formation, followed by anorthite and gehlenite. The sintering of the glass particles is inhibited by the crystalline phase formation and stops after the formation of 10% of crystal phase. Higher densification may be obtained by applying fast heating rate (20 K/min), which also improves the mechanical properties.

Thirst and hyperdipsia of anuric chronic uremics on maintenance hemodialysis and the possible dipsogenic factors were studied. Exaggerated thirst was present in 213 (86%) of the 247 studied patients. It usually started 4-6 h after the end of the dialysis session, persisted during the whole interdialytic period and often disappeared during the subsequent dialysis. Hyperdipsia, as indicated by the high body weight gain (4%) in the interdialytic periods, was present in 33.6% of patients. The highest rate of increase of body weight occurred in the first hours following the end of dialysis sessions. Hypernatremia, potassium depletion, increasing plasma urea levels and elevated plasma angiotensin II levels were considered as the possible dipsogenic factors of a nonpsychic nature. Sodium is certainly of paramount importance for its obliged extracellular position, and when sodium intake is elevated, hypernatremia is very likely the cause of exaggerated thirst and weight gain in patients on hemodialysis. Potassium depletion may cause thirst in animals, but this condition is extremely rare in patients on maintenance hemodialysis, who often accumulate it. In these patients it is, therefore, unlikely that potassium depletion is a dipsogenic factor. Increasing serum urea levels exert an evident dipsogenic effect in anephric rats and urea, when infused into normal volunteers, stimulates thirst. The extracellular urea levels in the interdialytic period are certainly higher than the intracellular ones, as a consequence of its continuous accumulation, and this creates an osmotic gradient with a dipsogenic effect. When this gradient is reversed, following hemodialysis (which removes first the extracellular urea), the dipsogenic effect disappears.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

Neurogenic low urinary tract dysfunctions unresponsive to medical and conservative therapy are difficult to manage. Nowadays they can be treated with Sacral Nerve Stimulation (SNS), even if clinical experiences reported in literature are still limited.We performed SNS in 6 patients with neurogenic bladder: 3 patients had incontinence-urgency (1 myelitis, 1 multiple sclerosis, 1 autonomic polineuropathy) and 3 patients had urinary retention (1 incomplete spinal cord lesion, 1 operation for discal hernia T5-T6, 1 hysterectomy).Among cases with incontinence-urgency we achieved complete control of the bladder in 2 patients while in 1 patient the number of urinary losses was reduced of the 80%. In 2 patients with urinary retention we obtained complete recovery of the bladder function, while in 1 patient the number of cateterisms/die reduced of 50%, the urinary volume for micturion increased and residual urinary volume decreased. Results were unchanged during the follow-up (maximum 26 months), except for 1 patient in which a partial loss of effectiveness occurred.Chronic electric stimulation of S3 sacral roots via an implanted neuroprotesis is therefore an effectiveness, save and promising therapeutic option in treatment of neurogenic bladder dysfunctions.

This is a clinical case concerning an uremic female patient who presented with an important oedema in the omolateral left arm, after the creation of an AV fistula. All the diagnostic procedures including the ultrasound color-Doppler were irrelevant. The patient was positive for a subclavian venous stenosis which was completely unexpected. This clinical case questions how useful it is in indirectly evaluating flow meters by ultrasound color-Doppler in the work-up of central venous steno-occlusions.

A retrospective clinical-pathological review of 192 lumbar intervertebral discs removed via an interlaminar approach or percutaneous nucleotomy from patients suffering from sciatic pain was carried out in order to assess if routine examination is useful. Only for a case of our series, which showed ill defined features at preoperative neuroradiologic imaging, an intraoperative pathologic examination was necessary. Immunohistochemical study was never required. A routine examination with a hematoxilin-eosin stain was sufficient also to recognize postoperative scar in patients reoperated. In conclusion we think that routine examination of the intervertebral disc is a procedure which is not expensive and useful to assess the nature of the lesion in reoperated patients and in rare cases showing unclear radiologic pattern.

Behavior, hippocampal electrical activity, plasma hormones and hippocampal choline acetyltransferase (ChAT) were considered in two groups of female rabbits, different in age and condition of breeding, both in the presence and absence of emotional stimuli. In the two groups of female rabbits (4 and 18 months old), permanent electrodes were implanted bilaterally in the two dorsal hippocampi and, one week later, the animals were exposed for three consecutive days to the following tests: Day 1, novel environment (NE); Day 2, object with odor (O); Day 3, sparrow hawk (SP). Behavior: in comparison with Day 1, exploration was decreased by the object and by the sparrow hawk in the older females and increased in the younger ones. Quiet and alert immobility was higher during the SP test, while freezing and pointing were lower in the older females than in the young ones. Electrical activity: peak frequency was lower in younger females than in the older ones. The frequency band distribution corresponding to exploration and immobility showed that in the older females the % of high frequency band increased from the first to the third day of testing, while an opposite trend was present in the younger females. In the case of freezing the hippocampal electric activity showed a more rhythmical component in younger females than in the older ones. Hormones: increased corticosterone levels after the SP test were directly correlated with exploration and inversely correlated with freezing. Dorsal hippocampal ChAT was directly correlated with quiet immobility. These data indicate a relationship between the responses to the anxious/fearful stimuli and the age and/or breeding experience of the female rabbits; this is shown by both the hippocampal electrical activity and the behavioral differences between the two groups.

The study about the adhesion molecules pointed out their pathogenetic role in a lot of diseases within cardiological, nephrological, oncological precincts and in a lot of infectious diseases. Their role was in fact pointed out in the ischemic heart disease and in the reperfusion damage, in the glomerulonephritis, in the tumoural metastatic processes, in the infectious and inflammatory chronic processes. The Authors considered the recent literature and emphasized the therapeutic possibilities that such an experimental approach seems to suggest.

Formalin (10%) induces higher levels of licking and flexing in female than in male rats, as shown in the present study. In order to ascertain the neural and hormonal modifications that accompany these behavioural differences, we determined the activity of choline acetyltransferase in the hippocampus and the levels of adrenocorticotropic hormone and corticosterone in the plasma. Two concentrations of formalin were used (501 μl; 0.1% or 10%). Formalin was injected subcutaneously in the dorsal part of the hindpaw, and the animal's behaviour was then recorded for 60 min in a familiar open-field apparatus. Hippocampal choline acetyltransferase activity did not differ between the two genders in controls, while a significant gender difference was present in both formalin-injected groups, with higher levels in females than in males. This was the result of a decrease in males but not in females. In contrast, adrenocorticotropic hormone was increased by both formalin concentrations in females; corticosterone was not affected by treatment in either gender. Results are discussed in the light of the morphological and functional differences between the two genders in the hippocampus and in the hypothalamo-pituitary-adrenal axis.

Biocompatibility and depurative efficiency of Paired Filtration Dialysis was evaluated in a short-term (one month) follow up in 12 chronic uremic patients. Plasma granulocyte elastase slightly increased during the first hour of treatment, a transient but significative leukopenia was observed.Protein layer revealed a marked deposition of coagulation factors on polysulphone and trace amount of C3c and immunoglobulins on Hemophane. PFD allows an high depurative efficiency for small molecules (assessed by a Kt/V urea >1) and for Beta-2 MG even in a shorter dialytic time.

The lupus of NZB/NZW F1 female mice is associated with immune complex glomerulonephritis and premature death. Cyclophosphamide and 15(S)-15 methyl PGE1 therapy halt disease progression. Fluorescein conjugated antibodies were utilized to label specific leukocytes and the subsets were quantitated using a Fluorescence Activated Cell Sorter. Normal outbred CD-1 female mice showed a decrease in absolute T and B cell numbers with age, but the ratio of T and B cells remained essentially constant through 9 months of age. By contrast the NZB/W female mice showed decreased numbers of total lymphocytes relative to CD-1 controls at all ages. Moreover relative to CD-1s, there was a far greater decrease in T cell numbers (7 x for NZB/W versus 2 x for CD-1) and B cell numbers failed to decrease with age. The characteristic decline in T lymphocyte numbers and relative increase in B cell numbers in NZB/W mice were corrected with cyclophosphamide and PGE1 therapy. However, there was no selective modification of T cell subsets (L3T4+ or Ly2+) with therapy. Our investigation suggests correction of the abnormal T/B cell ratio may be a useful marker of therapeutic activity in NZB/W mice.

1. 1. The optical behaviour (D.R.F.) of actomyosin, myosin and actin prepared both from normal and dystrophic rabbit muscles has been investigated. Quantitative estimations are reported. 2. 2. In dystrophic muscle myosin and actomyosin, as far as these proteins could be extracted with the method employed, do not show marked changes in the optical behaviour of their solutions as compared with normal. The only notable change requiring further investigation is the reduced increase in birefringence shown by myosin solution in 0.1−0.2 M KCl. This phenomenon may be interpreted as a change in the ability of myosin from dystrophic muscles to form K-myosinates. 3. 3. In advanced dystrophy, actin loses its capacity to be activated by different salts. This may be interpreted as an inability of actin to polymerize.

Extractions of muscle proteins of dystrophic, vitamin-E deficient rabbits show that in advanced dystrophy the actomyosin content of the extract (ionic strength = 0.11) is considerably reduced. The myosin content is even more reduced and may completely disappear from the extract. Actin, on the other hand, does not seem to be quantitatively effected by the dystrophy. The possible interrelationship between these results and the ATP content of the dystrophic muscles is briefly discussed.

During the last 30 years the possibilities and mechanisms of muscle regeneration have been thoroughly studied, particularly in mammals, and the occurrence of complete muscle reconstruction from minced muscle fragments has been demonstrated since the experiments made by Studitsky (for the past literature, see Carlson, 1972, 1973).

Compensatory hypertrophy was induced in the rat extensor digitorum longus muscle by extirpation of the synergistic tibialis anterior. Injections of 3H-thymidine (2 muCi/g body weight) was given at 24, 48, and 72 h after the operation. In animals killed immediately after the last injection both satellite cell nuclei and true muscle nuclei were labeled, whereas in animals killed 4 weeks later only true muscle nuclei were labeled. The results are interpreted as indicating incorporation of newly formed satellite cells into the fibers during compensatory hypertrophy.

This paper reports a new horseradish peroxidase enzyme linked immunosorbant assay (ELISA) to detect patient serum alloantibodies. The new methodology utilizes a water-soluble chromogen, O-dianisidine and a temporary solid antibody support, osmotically lysed reagent erythrocytes. In a double blind study the horseradish peroxidase ELISA was found to be as sensitive as the conventional antiglobulin test. In parallel dilution studies on serum samples containing anti-Kell antibodies, the horseradish peroxidase-ELISA was found to be substantially more sensitive than the conventional antiglobulin test. While the procedure is at present impractical for routine use, these results indicate a potential for improved sensitivity which warrants further research. Possible applications and prospective areas of research are discussed.

Skeletal muscle fibres, long multinucleated cells, arise by fusion of mononucleated myoblasts to form a myotube that matures into the adult fibre. The two major types of mature fibre, fast and slow fibres, differ physiologically in their rate of isotonic shortening1. At the molecular level these type-specific physiological properties are ascribed to different isoforms of myosin, a major protein involved in shortening2,3. Differentiation of fast and slow fibres seems to be under the control of motoneurones4, and mature fibres are innervated by only one motoneurone. When rat soleus muscle (SOL, a slow muscle) is dually innervated with a fast nerve, it acquires some properties of a fast muscle, that is, low sensitivity to caffeine and high glycogen content5. We report here that in dually innervated soleus muscle the foreign fast nerve induces synthesis of fast isoforms of myosin, but only in the segment of the muscle fibre that is close to the foreign endplate. The localized influence of the nerve endplates suggest that factors controlling the phenotypic expression of the muscle fibre have a short range of activity.
