Abstract: The ongoing climate crisis requires innovative methods to maximize renewable and sustainable energy resources. There have been advancements in harvesting energy from ambient motions such as wind, ocean waves, and human movements. Dielectric elastomer generators (DEGs) are a promising option for energy harvesting due to their high energy density and compatibility with low‐frequency oscillations. This review provides an in‐depth overview of DEGs, including electroactive materials, electromechanical characterization, electronics for harvesting, interfacing circuits, prototypes, and challenges. DEGs have the potential to play a significant role in decarbonizing energy for both small‐ and large‐scale applications using ambient energy sources.

2. On the Aeroelasticity of a Cantilever Wing Equipped with the Spanwise Morphing Trailing Edge Concept

Abstract: This paper studies the aeroelastic behavior of a rectangular, cantilever wing equipped with the spanwise morphing trailing edge (SMTE) concept. The SMTE consists of multiple trailing edge flaps that allow controlling the spanwise camber distribution of a wing. The flaps are attached at the wing’s trailing edge using torsional springs. The Rayleigh–Ritz method is used to develop the equations of motion of the wing-flap system. The use of shape functions allows for representing the wing as an equivalent 2D airfoil with generalized coordinates that are defined at the wingtip. Strip theory, based on Theodorsen’s unsteady aerodynamic model, is used to compute the aerodynamic loads acting on the wing. A representative Padé approximation for Theodorsen’s function is utilized to model the aerodynamic behaviors in a state-space form allowing time-domain simulation and analysis. The model is validated using a rectangular cantilever wing and the data are available in the literature. A comprehensive parametric comparison study is conducted to assess the impact of flap stiffness on the aeroelastic boundary. In addition, the potential of the SMTE to provide load alleviation and flutter suppression is assessed for a wide range of flight conditions, using a discrete (1-cosine) gust. Finally, the implementation and validation of a controller for a wing with SMTE for gust load alleviation are studied and controller parameters are tuned for a specific gust model.

Abstract: There is an emerging trend in the morphing aircraft research where two or more morphing degrees of freedom are used on a wing which leads to the concept of polymorphing. The skin of the morphing wing must be flexible in the morphing direction but stiff in other directions to withstand the aerodynamic loads and maintain the airfoil shape. Polymorphing changes the loadings profile (from uniaxial to biaxial) and increases the complexity of designing suitable morphing skins. Furthermore, elastomeric materials used on morphing wings are usually prestretched to prevent wrinkling and to increase their out-of-plane stiffness. This paper focuses on elastomeric morphing skins and it studies the effect of biaxial strain rates and prestretch ratios on important mechanical properties such as stiffness, hysteresis losses (%), and stress relaxations (%) from an experimental perspective. Three polymeric materials are considered: Latex, Oppo, and Ecoflex. This study provides a mechanical comparative understanding of the three polymers used in the morphing wing under biaxial loading (two morphing degrees of freedom).

4. The Effect of Non-Conservative Compressive Force on the Vibration of Rotating Composite Blades

Abstract: This paper investigates the effectiveness of a resonance avoidance concept for composite rotor blades featuring extension–twist elastic coupling. The concept uses a tendon, attached to the tip of the blade, to apply a proper amount of compressive force to tune the vibration behavior of the blade actively. The tendon is simulated by applying a non-conservative axial compressive force applied to the blade tip. The main load carrying part of the structure is the composite spar box, which has an antisymmetric layup configuration. The nonlinear dynamic behavior of the composite blade is modelled by using the geometrically exact fully intrinsic beam equations. The resulting nonlinear differential equations are discretized using a time–space scheme, and the stationary and rotating frequencies of the blade are obtained. It is observed that the proposed resonance avoidance mechanism is effective for tuning the vibration behavior of composite blades. The applied compressive force can shift the frequencies and the location at which the frequency veering take place. Furthermore, the compressive force can also cause the composite blade to get unstable depending on the layup ply angle. Finally, the results, highlighting the importance of compressive force and ply angle on the dynamic behavior of composite blades, are presented and discussed.

Abstract: A morphing aircraft continuously adjusts its wing geometry to achieve optimal flight characteristics for a wide range of flight conditions. Research on morphing aircraft has focused on developing wings with 1 morphing degree of freedom “monomorphing”. However, nowadays the focus is on developing wings with multiple morphing degrees of freedom “polymorphing”. One of the key design challenges for morphing aircraft technology is the development of skin capable of facilitating morphing whilst maintaining the aerodynamic shape of the wing. Soft polymeric materials represent a potential candidate to act as morphing skin because of their ability to undergo large deformation in multiaxial directions. In this study, latex skin is characterized under all possible deformation modes such as uniaxial, pure shear, biaxial, and equibiaxial to account for monomorphing and polymorphing applications. The effects of strain rate, thickness, and aspect ratio on hysteresis loss, stress relaxation and, stiffness are also studied. The outcomes of this study provide a comprehensive understanding of the mechanical viscoelastic behavior of latex skin under various deformation modes.

Abstract: This paper studies the effect of morphing rate on the aeroelasticity of a polymorphing wing capable of active span extension and passive twist/pitch. A variable domain size finite element model is developed to capture the dynamic effects due to the presence of a variable span in the Euler–Bernoulli beam model, which introduces a structural damping term in the equations of motion. The effect of various morphing rates on the aeroelastic boundaries of the system, namely, flutter velocity and flutter frequency, is examined for a beam undergoing span extension and retraction, from baseline span to 25% span extension and vice versa, respectively. Three points of interest are analyzed: at the start of the span morphing, at the mid-point of morphing, and just before the morphing process ends. The parametric analysis is carried out to determine the effect of varying critical parameters, such as the elastic axis location of the outboard wing section and adjoining spring torsional rigidity on the aeroelastic boundaries of the polymorphing wing.

8. A Novel Reverse Hinge Spoiler for Flight Loads Control

Abstract: This paper presents the reverse hinge spoiler, a novel spoiler concept, for flight load control. The reverse hinge spoiler is a control surface mounted on the upper surface of the wing. Unlike conventional hinged spoilers that are hinged at their front and rotate forward toward the leading edge of the wing, the proposed spoiler concept is hinged at its rear and rotates backward toward the trailing edge of the wing. The aerodynamic performance of the proposed spoiler is compared and contrasted with that of a conventional hinged spoiler for different flight conditions and hinge locations using the two-dimensional Reynolds-Averaged Navier–Stokes (RANS) with the k-omega SST turbulence model-based computational fluid dynamic solver. The results show that the proposed spoiler results in a larger increase in drag and a sharper reduction in the lift for a wide range of spoiler angles and flight conditions. Reversing the spoiler is found to cause a higher adverse pressure gradient in front of the spoiler compared to a conventional spoiler, as it ‘traps’ more flow, thereby increasing drag and reducing lift.

Abstract: This paper presents an aeroelastic analysis of a polymorphing wing capable of active span extension and passive pitch variation. The wing is split into two segments: an inboard segment responsible for span extension/retraction and an outboard segment capable of pitch variation. The two segments are connected through an overlapping spar and a torsional spring. A finite element aeroelastic model is developed where the wing structure is discretized into Euler–Bernoulli beam elements and the aerodynamic loads are calculated using Theodorsen’s unsteady model. A comprehensive parametric analysis is carried out with and without span extension to analyze the effect of varying critical design parameters, such as elastic axis position of outboard section and torsional spring rigidity, and conditions for aeroelastic phenomena of flutter and divergence are studied. A gust load analysis is carried out to quantify the capability of the outboard wing passive twist mechanism to alleviate loads. Finally, a nonlinear analysis is carried out by replacing the linear torsional spring with a nonlinear cubic spring to study the effects of cubic hardening and softening on the aeroelasticity of the polymorphing wing.

10. A Polymorphing Wing Capable of Span Extension and Variable Pitch

Abstract: This paper presents the development of a novel polymorphing wing capable of Active Span morphing And Passive Pitching (ASAPP) for small UAVs. The span of an ASAPP wing can be actively extended by up to 25% to enhance aerodynamic efficiency, whilst its pitch near the wingtip can be passively adjusted to alleviate gust loads. To integrate these two morphing mechanisms into one single wing design, each side of the wing is split into two segments (e.g., inboard and outboard segments). The inboard segment is used for span extension whilst the outboard segment is used for passive pitch. The inboard segment consists of a main spar that can translate in the spanwise direction. Flexible skin is used to cover the inboard segment and maintain its aerodynamic shape. The skin transfers the aerodynamic loads to the main spar through a number of ribs that can slide on the main spar through linear plain bearings. A linear actuator located within the fuselage is used for span morphing. The inboard and outboard segments are connected by an overlapping spar surrounded by a torsional spring. The overlapping spar is located ahead of the aerodynamic center of the outboard segment to facilitate passive pitch. The aero-structural design, analysis, and sizing of the ASAPP wing are detailed here. The study shows that the ASAPP wing can be superior to the baseline wing (without morphing) in terms of aerodynamic efficiency, especially when the deformation of the flexible skin is minimal. Moreover, the passive pitching near the wingtip can reduce the root loads significantly, minimizing the weight penalty usually associated with morphing.

Abstract: This paper presents a parametric study on the aeroelasticity of cantilever wings equipped with Flared Hinge Folding Wingtips (FHFWTs). The finite element method is utilized to develop a computational, low-fidelity aeroelastic model. The wing structure is modelled using Euler–Bernoulli beam elements, and unsteady Theodorsen’s aerodynamic strip Theory is used for aerodynamic load predictions. The PK method is used to estimate the aeroelastic boundaries. The model is validated using three rectangular, cantilever wings whose properties are available in literature. Then, a rectangular, cantilever wing is used to study the effect of folding wingtips on the aeroelastic response and stability boundaries. Two scenarios are considered for the aeroelastic analysis. In the first scenario, the baseline, rectangular wing is split into inboard and outboard segments connected by a flared hinge that allows the outboard segment to fold. In the second scenario, a folding wingtip is added to the baseline wing. For both scenarios, the influence of fold angle, hinge-line angle (flare angle), hinge stiffness, tip mass and geometry are assessed. In addition, the load alleviation capability of FHFWT is evaluated when the wing encounters discrete (1-cosine) gusts. Finally, the hinge is assumed to exhibit cubic nonlinear behavior in torsion, and the effect of nonlinearity on the aeroelastic response is assessed and analyzed for three different cases.

Abstract: Objectives: To assess factors affecting Saudi population preference in losing weight either by bariatric surgeries or by conservative strategies. Methods: A cross sectional study was done using a self-administered questionnaire distributed online. Study was done on 518 participants (group 1) who did not prefer to undergo bariatric surgery and preferred conservative strategies in weight reduction and group 2 (84 participants) who preferred to undergo bariatric surgery. Results: Participants in group 1 and group 2 represented 86% and 14% of the sample. Group II had a significant higher percent of obese and per-obese individuals, who usually eat basic meals every day, who usually have soft drinks as beverages, who eat fast food for more than 2 times weekly, who had more than 6 attempts to lose weight in the last 5 years and who thought that their families would support their efforts in improving their food habits. Group II had a statistically significant higher percent of those who consider bariatric surgery as an effective tool for weight loss, who believed that they would lose more weight with bariatric surgery, and who believe that surgery will cause a drastic change in their lifestyle. Group 1 had a significant higher percent of those who eat fruit and vegetables every day, who reported always practicing physical activity during the entire year. Conclusion: Factors affecting the preference of weight loss were eating habits, physical activity, and attempt of dieting. An efficient health education programs about bariatric surgeries is needed to correct misconceptions regarding the surgery.

Abstract: Distributed parameter model (DPM) gives an accurate representation of the vibration response of piezoelectric cantilevers. Nevertheless, lumped parameter model (LPM) has been widely used because of its simple mathematical representation. However, researchers developed a correction factor for LPM because of its inaccurate power output prediction of the piezoelectric harvesters. The developed correction factors were limited to the rectangular and exponentially tapered piezoelectric beams because the DPM of other shaped beams are rather complicated to derive. This paper presents a correction factor for linearly tapered piezoelectric cantilever beam using a finite element model (FEM) approach. Validation of the developed FEM is accomplished using two analytical models from literature of rectangular and exponentially tapered shapes with tip mass. Results show an excellent agreement between the FEM and the related DPM. The FEM of a linearly tapered piezoelectric cantilever is then built and the error of using the uncorrected LPM for different tapered ratios is investigated. Correction factors of different taper ratios subjected to various tip masses are developed. Comparisons between the corrected LPM and the FEM verify the estimation of the correction factor. Results show that FEM approach can be used to enhance the accuracy of LPM of piezoelectric cantilever harvesters.

15. Elastic modulus and flexural strength comparisons of high-impact and traditional denture base acrylic resins

Abstract: Background: Fractures of acrylic resin dentures are a common occurrence in clinical dentistry. The denture may be fractured accidentally when dropped or while in service in the mouth due to flexural fatigue. Objectives: The aim of this study was to compare the elastic modulus and the flexural strength between two heat-cured acrylic resins used in denture bases: a high-impact resin (Lucitone 199) and a traditional resin (Rodex). Materials and methods: Rectangular strips of Lucitone 199 and Rodex (10 samples each) were fabricated and stored in artificial saliva at 37 °C for 2 weeks. The specimens were subjected to a three-point flexural test. The data were statistically analysed with Student’s t-test (p ⩽ .05). Results: The high-impact acrylic resin had a lower elastic modulus (p = .000) and higher flexural strength (p = .001) compared to the traditional acrylic resin. Conclusion: Within the limitations of this study, it can be concluded that the high-impact acrylic resin is a suitable denture base material for patients with clinical fracture of the acrylic denture. Abstract: Aims. We produce a clean and well-characterised catalogue of objects within 100 pc of the Sun from the Gaia Early Data Release 3. We characterise the catalogue through comparisons to the full data release, external catalogues, and simulations. We carry out a first analysis of the science that is possible with this sample to demonstrate its potential and best practices for its use., Methods. Theselection of objects within 100 pc from the full catalogue used selected training sets, machine-learning procedures, astrometric quantities, and solution quality indicators to determine a probability that the astrometric solution is reliable. The training set construction exploited the astrometric data, quality flags, and external photometry. For all candidates we calculated distance posterior probability densities using Bayesian procedures and mock catalogues to define priors. Any object with reliable astrometry and a non-zero probability of being within 100 pc is included in the catalogue., Results. We have produced a catalogue of 331 312 objects that we estimate contains at least 92% of stars of stellar type M9 within 100 pc of the Sun. We estimate that 9% of the stars in this catalogue probably lie outside 100 pc, but when the distance probability function is used, a correct treatment of this contamination is possible. We produced luminosity functions with a high signal-to-noise ratio for the main-sequence stars, giants, and white dwarfs. We examined in detail the Hyades cluster, the white dwarf population, and wide-binary systems and produced candidate lists for all three samples. We detected local manifestations of several streams, superclusters, and halo objects, in which we identified 12 members of Gaia Enceladus. We present the first direct parallaxes of five objects in multiple systems within 10 pc of the Sun., Conclusions. We provide the community with a large, well-characterised catalogue of objects in the solar neighbourhood. This is a primary benchmark for measuring and understanding fundamental parameters and descriptive functions in astronomy.

Abstract: This paper presents the development of a novel compliant polymorphing wing capable of chord and camber morphing for small UAVs. The morphing wing can achieve up to 10% chord extension and ±20° camber changes. The design, modelling, sizing, manufacturing and mechanical testing of the wing are detailed. The polymorphing wing consists of one continuous front spar fixed to the fuselage and a rear spar on each side of the wing. Each rear spar can translate in the chordwise direction (chord morphing) and rotate around itself (camber morphing). A flexible elastomeric latex sheet is used as the skin to cover the wing and maintain its aerodynamic shape whilst allowing morphing. The loads from the skin are transferred to the spars using the compliant cellular ribs that support the flexible skin and facilitate morphing. Pre-tensioning is applied to the skin to minimize wrinkling when subject to aerodynamic and actuation loads. A rack and pinion actuation system, powered by stepper motors, is used for morphing. Aero-structural design, analysis and sizing are conducted. Performance comparison between the polymorphing wing and the baseline wing (non-morphing) shows that chord morphing improves aerodynamic efficiency at low angles of attack while camber morphing improves efficiency at high angles of attack.

Abstract: In this work, transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and Raman spectroscopy were used to assess the dispersion quality of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) in an epoxy matrix. Its ultimate tensile strength (UTS), engineering strain, local strain, and the elastic tensile modulus were determined experimentally. The effect of CNT sonication time in an ethanol medium was also evaluated. A statistical analysis using the t-test approach was employed to clarify how the use of CNTs affects the mechanical properties of the matrix. An increase in the UTS by 10 and 7% was observed in the cases of 0.1 wt.% single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) and multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs), respectively, but the elastic modulus increased significantly when using MWCNTs. A TEM analysis indicated that the dispersion quality was proportional to the content of CNTs. It is concluded that a CNT-reinforced epoxy matrix is highly sensitive to the amount of CNTs, which can explain the conflicting properties reported for such matrices in the literature.

20. Characterization of a Test for Invasive Breast Cancer Using X-ray Diffraction of Hair - Results of a Clinical Trial

Abstract: Objective: To assess the performance of a test for breast cancer utilizing synchrotron x-ray diffraction analysis of scalp hair from women undergoing diagnostic radiology assessment. Design and Setting: A double-blinded clinical trial of women who attended diagnostic radiology clinics in Australia. Patients: 1796 women referred for diagnostic radiology, with no previous history of cancer. Main Outcome Measures: Sensitivity, specificity and accuracy of the hair test analysis compared to the gold standard of imaging followed by biopsy where indicated. Results: The hair-based assay had an overall accuracy of >77% and a negative predictive value of 99%. For all women, the sensitivity of both mammography and x-ray diffraction alone was 64%, but when used together the sensitivity rose to 86%. The sensitivity of the hair test for women under the age of 70 was 74%. Conclusion: In this large population trial the association between the presence of breast cancer and an altered hair fibre X-ray diffraction pattern previously reported has been confirmed. It appears that mammography and X-ray diffraction of hair detect different populations of breast cancers, and are synergistic when used together.

Abstract: Objectives:To assess factors affecting Saudi population preference in losing weight either by bariatric surgeries or by conservative strategies. Methods:A cross sectional study was done using a self-administered questionnaire distributed online. Study was done on 518 participants (group 1) who did not prefer to undergo bariatric surgery and preferred conservative strategies in weight reduction and group 2 (84 participants) who preferred to undergo bariatric surgery. Results:Participants in group 1 and group 2 represented 86% and 14% of the sample. Group II had a significant higher percent of obese and per-obese individuals, who usually eat basic meals every day, who usually have soft drinks as beverages, who eat fast food for more than 2 times weekly, who had more than 6 attempts to lose weight in the last 5 years and who thought that their families would support their efforts in improving their food habits. Group II had a statistically significant higher percent of those who consider bariatric surgery as an effective tool for weight loss, who believed that they would lose more weight with bariatric surgery, and who believe that surgery will cause a drastic change in their lifestyle. Group 1 had a significant higher percent of those who eat fruit and vegetables every day, who reported always practicing physical activity during the entire year. Conclusion:Factors affecting the preference of weight loss were eating habits, physical activity, and attempt of dieting. An efficient health education programs about bariatric surgeries is needed to correct misconceptions regarding the surgery.&nbsp

Abstract: Seabroke, G. M., et al., [Context] Gaia's Early Third Data Release (EDR3) does not contain new radial velocities because these will be published in Gaia's full third data release (DR3), expected in the first half of 2022. To maximise the usefulness of EDR3, Gaia's second data release (DR2) sources (with radial velocities) are matched to EDR3 sources to allow their DR2 radial velocities to also be included in EDR3. This presents two considerations: (i) a list of 70 365 sources with potentially contaminated DR2 radial velocities has been published; and (ii) EDR3 is based on a new astrometric solution and a new source list, which means sources in DR2 may not be in EDR3. [Aims] The two aims of this work are: (i) investigate the list in order to improve the DR2 radial velocities being included in EDR3 and to avoid false-positive hypervelocity candidates; and (ii) match the DR2 sources (with radial velocities) to EDR3 sources. [Methods] Thetwo methods of this work are: (i) unpublished, preliminary DR3 radial velocities of sources on the list, and high-velocity stars not on the list, are compared with their DR2 radial velocities to identify and remove contaminated DR2 radial velocities from EDR3; and (ii) proper motions and epoch position propagation is used to attempt to match all sources with radial velocities in DR2 to EDR3 sources. The comparison of DR2 and DR3 radial velocities is used to resolve match ambiguities. [Results] EDR3 contains 7 209 831 sources with a DR2 radial velocity, which is 99.8% of sources with a radial velocity in DR2 (7 224 631). 14 800 radial velocities from DR2 are not propagated to any EDR3 sources because (i) 3871 from the list are found to either not have a DR3 radial velocity or it differs significantly from its DR2 value, and five high-velocity stars not on the list are confirmed to have contaminated radial velocities, in one case because of contamination from the non-overlapping Radial Velocity Spectrometer windows of a nearby, bright star; and (ii) 10 924 DR2 sources could not be satisfactorily matched to any EDR3 sources, so their DR2 radial velocities are also missing from EDR3. [Conclusions] The reliability of radial velocities in EDR3 has improved compared to DR2 because the update removes a small fraction of erroneous radial velocities (0.05% of DR2 radial velocities and 5.5% of the list). Lessons learnt from EDR3 (e.g. bright star contamination) will improve the radial velocities in future Gaia data releases. The main reason for radial velocities from DR2 not propagating to EDR3 is not related to DR2 radial velocity quality. 24. A Parametric Study on the Aeroelasticity of Flared Hinge Folding Wingtips

Abstract: This paper presents a parametric study on the aeroelasticity of cantilever wings equipped with Flared Hinge Folding Wingtips (FHFWTs). The finite element method is utilized to develop a computational, low-fidelity aeroelastic model. The wing structure is modelled using Euler–Bernoulli beam elements, and unsteady Theodorsen’s aerodynamic strip Theory is used for aerodynamic load predictions. The PK method is used to estimate the aeroelastic boundaries. The model is validated using three rectangular, cantilever wings whose properties are available in literature. Then, a rectangular, cantilever wing is used to study the effect of folding wingtips on the aeroelastic response and stability boundaries. Two scenarios are considered for the aeroelastic analysis. In the first scenario, the baseline, rectangular wing is split into inboard and outboard segments connected by a flared hinge that allows the outboard segment to fold. In the second scenario, a folding wingtip is added to the baseline wing. For both scenarios, the influence of fold angle, hinge-line angle (flare angle), hinge stiffness, tip mass and geometry are assessed. In addition, the load alleviation capability of FHFWT is evaluated when the wing encounters discrete (1-cosine) gusts. Finally, the hinge is assumed to exhibit cubic nonlinear behavior in torsion, and the effect of nonlinearity on the aeroelastic response is assessed and analyzed for three different cases.

Abstract: Aims. We aim to demonstrate the scientific potential of the Gaia Early Data Release 3 (EDR3) for the study of different aspects of the Milky Way structure and evolution and we provide, at the same time, a description of several practical aspects of the data and examples of their usage., Methods. We used astrometric positions, proper motions, parallaxes, and photometry from EDR3 to select different populations and components and to calculate the distances and velocities in the direction of the anticentre. In this direction, the Gaia astrometric data alone enable the calculation of the vertical and azimuthal velocities; also, the extinction is relatively low compared to other directions in the Galactic plane. We then explore the disturbances of the current disc, the spatial and kinematical distributions of early accreted versus in situ stars, the structures in the outer parts of the disc, and the orbits of open clusters Berkeley 29 and Saurer 1., Results. With the improved astrometry and photometry of EDR3, we find that: (i) the dynamics of the Galactic disc are very complex with oscillations in the median rotation and vertical velocities as a function of radius, vertical asymmetries, and new correlations, including a bimodality with disc stars with large angular momentum moving vertically upwards from below the plane, and disc stars with slightly lower angular momentum moving preferentially downwards; (ii) we resolve the kinematic substructure (diagonal ridges) in the outer parts of the disc for the first time; (iii) the red sequence that has been associated with the proto-Galactic disc that was present at the time of the merger with Gaia-Enceladus-Sausage is currently radially concentrated up to around 14 kpc, while the blue sequence that has been associated with debris of the satellite extends beyond that; (iv) there are density structures in the outer disc, both above and below the plane, most probably related to Monoceros, the Anticentre Stream, and TriAnd, for which the Gaia data allow an exhaustive selection of candidate member stars and dynamical study; and (v) the open clusters Berkeley 29 and Saurer 1, despite being located at large distances from the Galactic centre, are on nearly circular disc-like orbits., Conclusions. Even with our simple preliminary exploration of the Gaia EDR3, we demonstrate how, once again, these data from the European Space Agency are crucial for our understanding of the different pieces of our Galaxy and their connection to its global structure and history.

Abstract: We present the early installment of the third Gaia data release, Gaia EDR3, consisting of astrometry and photometry for 1.8 billion sources brighter than magnitude 21, complemented with the list of radial velocities from Gaia DR2. Gaia EDR3 contains celestial positions and the apparent brightness in G for approximately 1.8 billion sources. For 1.5 billion of those sources, parallaxes, proper motions, and the (G_BP-G_RP) colour are also available. The passbands for G, G_BP, and G_RP are provided as part of the release. For ease of use, the 7 million radial velocities from Gaia DR2 are included in this release, after the removal of a small number of spurious values. New radial velocities will appear as part of Gaia DR3. Finally, Gaia EDR3 represents an updated materialisation of the celestial reference frame (CRF) in the optical, the Gaia-CRF3, which is based solely on extragalactic sources. The creation of the source list for Gaia EDR3 includes enhancements that make it more robust with respect to high proper motion stars, and the disturbing effects of spurious and partially resolved sources. The source list is largely the same as that for Gaia DR2, but it does feature new sources and there are some notable changes. The source list will not change for Gaia DR3. Gaia EDR3 represents a significant advance over Gaia DR2, with parallax precisions increased by 30 percent, proper motion precisions increased by a factor of 2, and the systematic errors in the astrometry suppressed by 30--40 percent for the parallaxes and by a factor ~2.5 for the proper motions. The photometry also features increased precision, but above all much better homogeneity across colour, magnitude, and celestial position. A single passband for G, G_BP, and G_RP is valid over the entire magnitude and colour range, with no systematics above the 1 percent level.

Abstract: The objective of this paper is to investigate the effect of tip mass ratios on the vibration response of the tapered piezoelectric cantilever beams using the lumped parameter model. Finite element analysis is used in this study to compare the finite element model with the lumped parameter model for different taper ratios of piezoelectric cantilever beam subjected to different tip mass ratios. Validation is done by comparing the finite element model with referenced distributed parameter models for 1) rectangular piezoelectric cantilever beam with different tip mass ratios and 2) different taper ratios of piezoelectric cantilever beam in the absence of tip mass. Deflection error percentage is obtained in this work as a key parameter to understand how tip mass can affect the accuracy of the lumped parameter model. It represents the difference between the normalized deflection of lumped parameter model and finite element model for the tapered piezoelectric cantilever. Results showed that when the taper ratio of the piezoelectric cantilever beams increases, the deflection error percentage increases in the absence of tip mass. When tip mass is added, the deflection error between the finite element model and the lumped parameter model decreases drastically leading to more accurate results in the vibration response of the beam.

Abstract: Context. Gaia Early Data Release 3 (Gaia EDR3) provides accurate astrometry for about 1.6 million compact (QSO-like) extragalactic sources, 1.2 million of which have the best-quality five-parameter astrometric solutions., Aims. The proper motions of QSO-like sources are used to reveal a systematic pattern due to the acceleration of the solar systembarycentre with respect to the rest frame of the Universe. Apart from being an important scientific result by itself, the acceleration measured in this way is a good quality indicator of the Gaia astrometric solution., Methods. Theeffect of the acceleration was obtained as a part of the general expansion of the vector field of proper motions in vector spherical harmonics (VSH). Various versions of the VSH fit and various subsets of the sources were tried and compared to get the most consistent result and a realistic estimate of its uncertainty. Additional tests with the Gaia astrometric solution were used to get a better idea of the possible systematic errors in the estimate., Results. Our best estimate of the acceleration based on Gaia EDR3 is (2.32 +/- 0.16) x 10(-10) m s(-2) (or 7.33 +/- 0.51 km s(-1) Myr-1) towards alpha = 269.1 degrees +/- 5.4 degrees, delta = -31.6 degrees +/- 4.1 degrees, corresponding to a proper motion amplitude of 5.05 +/- 0.35 mu as yr(-1). This is in good agreement with the acceleration expected from current models of the Galactic gravitational potential. We expect that future Gaia data releases will provide estimates of the acceleration with uncertainties substantially below 0.1 mu as yr(-1).

Abstract: This paper studies the aeroelastic behavior of telescopic, multi-segment, span morphing wings. The wing is modeled as a linear, multi-segment, stepped, cantilever Euler–Bernoulli beam. It consists of three segments along the axis and each segment has different geometric, mechanical, and inertial properties. The aeroelastic analysis takes into account spanwise out-of-plane bending and torsion only, for which the corresponding shape functions are derived and validated. The use of shape functions allows representing the wing as an equivalent aerofoil whose generalized coordinates are defined at the wingtip according to the Rayleigh–Ritz method. Theodorsen’s unsteady aerodynamic theory is used to estimate the aerodynamic loads. A representative Padé approximation for the Theodorsen’s transfer function is utilized to model the aerodynamic behaviors in state-space form allowing time-domain simulation and analysis. The effect of the segments’ mechanical, geometric, and inertial properties on the aeroelastic behavior of the wing is assessed. Finally, the viability of span morphing as a flutter suppression device is studied.

Abstract: In this paper we propose a homogenisation-based four-scale model for the mechanical properties of cross-laminated timber. The spatial scales considered in this study are the wood cell-wall, the wood fibres, growth rings and the structural scale. The computational homogenisation scheme is solved sequently from the lowest to the highest level in order to determine the effective mechanical properties of each material scale. As we are interested in improving the predictions of our computational simulations, we propose an optimisation strategy to calibrate the micro-mechanical parameters. Our numerical predictions are compared with experimental results and are validated successfully.

Abstract: Rigid wings usually fly at sub-optimal conditions generating unnecessary aerodynamic loses represented in flight time, fuel consumption, and unfavourable operational characteristics. High aspect ratio wings have good range and fuel efficiency, but lack manoeuvrability. On the other hand, low aspect ratio wings fly faster and are more manoeuvrable, but have poor aerodynamic performance. Span morphing technology allows integrating both features in a single wing design and allows continuously adjusting the wingspan to match the instantaneous flight conditions and mission objectives. This paper develops, a novel span morphing concept, the Gear driveN Autonomous Twin Spar (GNATSpar) for a mini-UAV. The GNATSpar can be used to achieve span extensions up to 100% but for demonstration purposes it is used here to achieve span extensions up to 20% to reduce induced drag and increase flight endurance. The GNATSpar is superior to conventional telescopic and articulated structures as it uses the space available in the opposite sides of the wing instead of relying on overlapping structures and bearings. In addition, it has a self-locking actuation mechanism due to the low lead angle of the driving worm gear. Following the preliminary aero-structural sizing of the concept, a physical prototype is developed and tested in the 7 ′ × 5 ′ wind-tunnel at the University of Southampton. Finally, benefits and drawbacks of the design are highlighted and analysed.

Abstract: This paper presents an extensive review of the developments in the aeroelasticity of morphing aircraft that occurred in the last decade (from 2009 to 2020). It focuses mainly on fixed-wing aircraft and highlights some representative examples from rotary-wing aircraft. Morphing wings are usually associated with significant changes in the aerodynamic loads, structural/elastic properties, and inertial properties and hence the aeroelastic behavior. Changes in aeroelastic behavior can also affect the flight dynamics, stability, and control of air-vehicles. The main motivation for this paper is the fact that it is not fully possible to assess and quantify the benefits of morphing technologies without accounting for aeroelastic effects. The literature on the aeroelasticity of morphing aircraft can be split into two main themes: Aeroelastic Stability and Aeroelastic Control. The first theme (Aeroelastic Stability) includes studies conducted on morphing concepts to ensure that they satisfy certain aeroelastic requirements/constraints and that such requirements/constraints do not limit the potential benefits of morphing. The second theme (Aeroelastic Control) includes studies that utilized morphing technologies to improve aeroelastic characteristics and/or control flight loads. It is evident that in both themes, the aeroelasticity of morphing aircraft has been analyzed using analytical, numerical, and/or computational tools with a very limited number of wind-tunnel and/or flight tests. In this paper, research activities and studies are categorized according to the morphing degree of freedom they address. For each degree of freedom, research activities are arranged according to the theme they fit under. Aeroelastic frameworks developed for generic morphing applications are also reviewed. In addition, the aeroelastic models used are highlighted and discussed. Finally, trends and research gaps are identified and discussed and main conclusions are drawn.

Abstract: For Gaia DR2 (GDR2), 280 million spectra, collected by the RVS instrument on-board Gaia, were processed and median radial velocities were derived for 9.8 million sources brighter than Grvs = 12 mag. This paper describes the validation and properties of the median radial velocities published in GDR2. Quality tests and filters are applied to select, from the 9.8 million radial velocities, those with the quality to be published in GDR2. The accuracy of the selected sample is assessed with respect to ground-based catalogues. Its precision is estimated using both ground-based catalogues and the distribution of the Gaia radial velocity uncertainties. GDR2 contains median radial velocities for 7 224 631 stars, with Teff in the range [3550, 6900] K, which passed succesfully the quality tests. The published median radial velocities provide a full sky-coverage and have a completness with respect to the astrometric data of 77.2\% (for $G \leq 12.5$ mag). The median radial velocity residuals with respect to the ground-based surveys vary from one catalogue to another, but do not exceed a few 100s m/s. In addition, the Gaia radial velocities show a positive trend as a function of magnitude, which starts around Grvs $\sim 9$ mag and reaches about $+500$ m/s at Grvs $= 11.75$ mag. The overall precision, estimated from the median of the Gaia radial velocity uncertainties, is 1.05 km/s. The radial velocity precision is function of many parameters, in particular the magnitude and effective temperature. For bright stars, Grvs in [4, 8] mag, the precision is in the range 200-350 m/s, which is about 3 to 5 times more precise than the pre-launch specification of 1 km/s. At the faint end, Grvs = 11.75 mag, the precisions for Teff = 5000 K and 6500 K are respectively 1.4 km/s and 3.7 km/s., Comment: Submitted to A&A

Abstract: This paper presents the development and extensive testing of the Transformer aircraft, a multimission UAV capable of symmetric and asymmetric span morphing. The UAV utilises a novel actuation system based on a rack and pinion mechanism to achieve span extensions up to 50%. The Transformer can morph symmetrically to enhance flight performance and asymmetrically to provide roll control. Extensive mechanical testing followed by wind-tunnel testing in the RJ Mitchell Wind-tunnel at the University of Southampton were conducted to ensure structural integrity and assess the behaviour of the UAV. Finally, a series of flight-testing were performed and the flight mechanics aspects associated with both symmetric and asymmetric span morphing were investigated.

37. Optimum design of a PID controller for the adaptive torsion wing

Abstract: This paper presents the optimum design of a PID controller for the Adaptive Torsion Wing (ATW) using the genetic algorithm (GA) optimiser. The ATW is a thin-wall, two-spar wingbox whose torsional stiffness can be adjusted by translating the spar webs in the chordwise direction inward and towards each. The reduction in torsional stiffness allows external aerodynamic loads to deform the wing and maintain its shape. The ATW is integrated within the wing of a representative UAV to replace conventional ailerons and provide roll control. The ATW is modelled as a two-dimensional equivalent aerofoil using bending and torsion shape functions to express the equations of motion in terms of the twist angle and plunge displacement at the wingtip. The full equations of motion for the ATW equivalent aerofoil were derived using Lagrangian mechanics. The aerodynamic lift and moment acting on the aerofoil were modelled using Theodorsen’s unsteady aerodynamic theory. The equations of motion are then linearised around an equilibrium position and the GA is employed to design a PID controller for the linearised system to minimise the actuation power require. Finally, the sizing and selection of a suitable actuator is performed.

Abstract: In this paper we investigate the mechanical behaviour of cross-laminated timber panels by a computational homogenisation approach. A finite element procedure is adopted within a multi-scale modelling framework to determine the constitutive response of timber. As some of the microstructural parameters of wood are either not well-known or susceptible to considerable variation, we introduce uncertainty in the definition of the material. In order to validate the present multi-scale model, we measure experimentally the longitudinal Young’s modulus and density of sawn wood beams made of radiata pine. In addition, we carry out several experimental tests on cross-laminated timber panels subject to bending, shear and compression loads. Our numerical predictions are compared with the experiments and are validated successfully, revealing the potential predictive capabilities of the present multi-scale modelling for the analysis of wood materials and timber structures.

Abstract: A low-fidelity aeroelastic model is developed to study the dynamic behaviour of uniform, cantilever span morphing wings. The wing structure is modelled using the shape functions of the bending and torsional modes of a uniform cantilever wing according to the Rayleigh–Ritz method. Theodorsen's unsteady aerodynamic theory is used to model the aerodynamic loads. A Pade approximation for the Theodorsen's transfer function is utilised to allow time-domain simulation and analysis. The sensitivity of the aeroelastic behaviour of span morphing wings to different geometric parameters and mechanical properties is considered. Furthermore, the impact of morphing rate on the aeroelastic behaviour is studied. Finally, the use of two novel span morphing concepts for flutter suppression is assessed.

Abstract: The Gaia Data Release 2 contains the 1st release of radial velocities complementing the kinematic data of a sample of about 7 million relatively bright, late-type stars. Aims: This paper provides a detailed description of the Gaia spectroscopic data processing pipeline, and of the approach adopted to derive the radial velocities presented in DR2. Methods: The pipeline must perform four main tasks: (i) clean and reduce the spectra observed with the Radial Velocity Spectrometer (RVS); (ii) calibrate the RVS instrument, including wavelength, straylight, line-spread function, bias non-uniformity, and photometric zeropoint; (iii) extract the radial velocities; and (iv) verify the accuracy and precision of the results. The radial velocity of a star is obtained through a fit of the RVS spectrum relative to an appropriate synthetic template spectrum. An additional task of the spectroscopic pipeline was to provide 1st-order estimates of the stellar atmospheric parameters required to select such template spectra. We describe the pipeline features and present the detailed calibration algorithms and software solutions we used to produce the radial velocities published in DR2. Results: The spectroscopic processing pipeline produced median radial velocities for Gaia stars with narrow-band near-IR magnitude Grvs < 12 (i.e. brighter than V~13). Stars identified as double-lined spectroscopic binaries were removed from the pipeline, while variable stars, single-lined, and non-detected double-lined spectroscopic binaries were treated as single stars. The scatter in radial velocity among different observations of a same star, also published in DR2, provides information about radial velocity variability. For the hottest (Teff > 7000 K) and coolest (Teff < 3500 K) stars, the accuracy and precision of the stellar parameter estimates are not sufficient to allow selection of appropriate templates. Abstract: Authentication is a process by whichaparty (could be a person or intended computer) establishes its identity to another party. In private and public communication channels including the Internet, authentication is usually done via the use of login passwords. Knowing of the password is supposed to guarantee that the user is authentic. Online business and many other deals need a stricter authentication procedure. With this type of protocols, many cryptographic operations, such as; authentication, identification, key exchange, etc. are implemented without presenting any secret information through the commination process. In this article, a novel approach for zero knowledge protocol is proposed using different perspective. The category of ring theory is adopted to design a new algorithm for zero knowledge proof using the π-Armendariz rings. The key idea of our algebraic zero knowledge protocol is the condition in the definition of this ring, in addition to its the properties. The proposed approach used a secret polynomial whose coefficients are in a π-Armendariz ring, this polynomial is kept by the prover and the algebraic zero knowledge protocol does not reveal any information about the polynomial.

Abstract: This paper investigates the extensibility of the wood cell-wall composite in the presence of parametric uncertainty by means of a multi-scale finite element approach. Normally, the three fundamental phases in wood, that is, cellulose, lignin and hemicellulose, present considerable scatter in their microstructure and mechanical properties. Nevertheless, by considering uncertainty in their properties, a significant computational cost is added to the solution of a large set of realisations represented by expensive fully-coupled multi-scale analyses. In order to tackle this high cost, we build a statistical approximation to the output of the computer model. Following this strategy, several micromechanical parameters are perturbed to study their influence on the extensibility of the material under tensile loading conditions. By reducing the cost of performing uncertainty analysis of the homogenised mechanical response, we are able to estimate the 5-th, 50-th, and 95-th percentile of the ultimate tensile strains of the material. We contrast our numerical predictions with experimental data, finding a good agreement for a wide range of initial microfibril angles.

Abstract: Background: Fractures of acrylic resin dentures are a common occurrence in clinical dentistry. The denture may be fractured accidentally when dropped or while in service in the mouth due to flexural fatigue. Objectives: The aim of this study was to compare the elastic modulus and the flexural strength between two heat-cured acrylic resins used in denture bases: a high-impact resin (Lucitone 199) and a traditional resin (Rodex). Materials and methods: Rectangular strips of Lucitone 199 and Rodex (10 samples each) were fabricated and stored in artificial saliva at 37 °C for 2 weeks. The specimens were subjected to a three-point flexural test. The data were statistically analysed with Student’s t-test (p ⩽ .05). Results: The high-impact acrylic resin had a lower elastic modulus (p = .000) and higher flexural strength (p = .001) compared to the traditional acrylic resin. Abstract: This note assesses the benefits of active aeroelastic structures (AAS) in enhancing flight performance and control authority. A representative AAS concept, whose torsional stiffness and shear centre position can be altered depending on the instantaneous flight condition, is employed in the wing of a medium altitude long endurance (MALE) UAV. A multidisciplinary design optimisation (MDO) suite is used in this study. It turns out that AAS can be very effective when used for enhancing control authority of the vehicle but have limited benefits in terms of flight performance (lift to drag).

Abstract: This paper presents an overview of an advanced, conceptual wing-box weight estimation and sizing model for transport aircraft. The model is based on linear thin-walled beam theory, where the wing-box is modelled as a simple, swept tapered multi-element beam. It consists of three coupled modules, namely sizing, aeroelastic analysis, and weight prediction. The sizing module performs generic wing-box sizing using a multi-element strategy. Three design cases are considered for each wing-box element. The aeroelastic analysis module accounts for static aeroelastic requirements and estimates their impact on the wing-box sizing. The weight prediction module estimates the wing-box weight based on the sizing process, including static aeroelastic requirements. The breakdown of the models into modules increases its flexibility for future enhancements to cover complex wing geometries and advanced aerospace materials. The model has been validated using five different transport aircraft. It has shown to be sufficiently robust, yielding an error bandwidth of ±3%, an average error estimate of -0·2%, and a standard error estimate of 1·5%.

Abstract: This paper assesses the feasibility of the Adaptive Torsion Wing (ATW) concept to replace conventional ailerons and enhance the manoeuvrability of a MALE UAV. The ATW concept is a thin-walled closed section two-spar wingbox whose torsional stiffness can be adjusted through the chord-wise position of the front and rear spar webs. The reduction in torsional stiffness allows external aerodynamic loads to induce aeroelastic twist that can be used as a function of the flight conditions to obtain a desired roll control authority. Modelling of the concept was performed using a conceptual design tool developed in MATLABTM. The variation of structural figures of merit are evaluated and discussed. Finally, an MDO study was performed to have in-depth assessments of the potential benefits of the ATW in replacing ailerons and providing sufficient roll control.

Abstract: This paper presents the Adaptive Torsion Wing (ATW) concept and performs two multidisciplinary design optimisation (MDO) studies by employing this novel concept across the wing of a representative UAV. The ATW concept varies the torsional stiffness of a two-spar wingbox by changing the enclosed area through the relative chordwise positions of the front and rear spar webs. The first study investigates the use of the ATW concept to improve the aerodynamic efficiency (lift-to-drag ratio) of the UAV. In contrast, the second study investigates the use of the concept to replace conventional ailerons and provide roll control. In both studies, the semi-span of the wing is split into five equal partitions and the concept is employed in each of them. The partitions are connected through thick ribs that allow the spar webs of each partition to translate independently of the webs of adjacent partitions and maintain a continuous load path across the wing span. An MDO suite consisting of a Genetic Algorithm (GA) optimiser coupled with a high-end low-fidelity aero-structural model was developed and employed in this paper.

Abstract: This paper presents a methodology that permits accounting for acoustic fatigue effects when sizing safe-life structural skin-stringer panels at the conceptual design stage of aircraft product development. The approach is based upon estimation of the maximum noise radiated from an entry-into-service year 2020 turbofan. Sonic fatigue endurance is assessed for different skin-stringer panels having different values of skin thickness, rib pitch and stringer pitch. Three different materials were considered in this study: aluminium 2024-T3 alloys (Al 2024-T3); carbon fibre-reinforced plastics (CFRP); and, glass reinforced fibre metal laminate (Hybrid Glare-3). The study resulted in CFRP having the most favourable sonic fatigue performance. In order to link economic considerations into technical decision making, the sonic endurance methods were coupled with an industry grade costing analysis tool (SEER-HTM) to examine the impact of safe-life design on the panel cost and weight. The presented methodology has been shown to be sufficiently generic in nature and robust. This will not only assist in identifying acoustic fatigue as a potential critical design scenario, but will also increase throughput during conceptual design sizing and optimisation.

Abstract: This paper presents the variable cross section spar (VCSpar) concept that facilitates varying the shear center position relative to the aerodynamic center, allowing the external aerodynamic loads to twist the structure and maintain its deformed shape. The VCSpar is considered in this paper as integrated within the wing of a representative unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) to enhance its flight performance and control authority. A preliminary design study was conducted to assess the potential benefits of the concept using a low-fidelity design tool. Then, aeroelastic modeling of the concept was performed where the VCSpar was modeled as a two-dimensional equivalent aerofoil using bending and torsion shape functions to express the equations of motion in terms of the twist angle and plunge displacement at the wingtip. The aerodynamic lift and moment acting on the equivalent aerofoil were modeled using Theodorsen’s unsteady aerodynamic theory. A low-dimensional state-space representation of an empirical Theodorsen’s transfer function was adopted to allow time-domain analyses.
