1. Thermo-physiological and Molecular Profiling of Two Indigenous Purebred Saudi Sheep under Acute Heat Stress Conditions

Abstract

In light of the escalating global concern regarding adaptation and resilience to elevated temperatures due to climate change, this experiment was designed to assess the thermo-physiological attributes of two native sheep breeds (Najdi and Naimi) and to delineate potential genetic factors conferring heat tolerance amidst acute exposure to elevated ambient temperatures. Meteorological and thermo-physiological parameters were scrutinized at distinct intervals (0 min, 30 min, 120 min, 24 hr, and 48 hr), alongside the analysis of heat-responsive gene expression at 0 min, 30 min, and 120 min, following the exposure of nine healthy male lambs from each breed (mean body weight: 25 kg; age: 4 months) to a bio-meteorologically-simulated environment, maintaining an average ambient temperature of 45 °C (approximately 93 units in the temperature-humidity index). In addition, blood samples were collected from each lamb, with total RNA isolated and purity assessed, followed by qRT-PCR analysis of 16 heat stress candidate genes using validated primers and standardized thermocycling protocols, including controls to ensure accuracy. Data were analyzed using statistical methods, including PROC GLM and PROC MEANS in SAS, one-way ANOVA, and pairwise differences with the LSD test for significance, while gene expression differences were calculated using the comparative Ct method and 2^ (−ΔΔCt) for relative quantification. The findings elucidate that the Najdi breed manifests heightened thermotolerance relative to the Naimi breed, as evidenced by diminished indicators of heat stress, encompassing skin temperature, respiratory rate, packed cell volume, adaptability coefficient, serum total protein, glucose levels, and triiodothyronine concentration. Moreover, analysis of gene expression patterns revealed widespread activation of heat stress-responsive genes in both breeds under thermal stress conditions; however, Najdi lambs consistently exhibited elevated expression levels of these genes compared to their Naimi counterparts. Notably, genes including HSP90AB1, HSPB6, HSF1, STIP1, HSP60, HSP90, and HSPB1 demonstrated particularly pronounced upregulation in Najdi lambs. In conclusion, the integrative thermo-physiological and molecular profiling highlights the superior thermotolerance and evolutionary adaptation of the Najdi breed to the hot climate of the KSA, in contrast to the Naimi breed.

2. Protective effect of sterubin against neurochemical and behavioral impairments in rotenone-induced Parkinson's disease

Abstract

This study was conducted to evaluate how sterubin affects rotenone-induced Parkinson's disease (PD) in rats. A total of 24 rats were distributed into 4 equal groups: normal saline control and rotenone control were administered saline or rotenone (ROT), respectively, orally; sterubin 10 received ROT + sterubin 10 mg/kg po; and sterubin alone was administered to the test group (10 mg/kg). Rats of the normal saline and sterubin alone groups received sunflower oil injection (sc) daily, 1 h after receiving the treatments cited above, while rats of the other groups received rotenone injection (0.5 mg/kg, sc). The treatment was continued over the course of 28 days daily. On the 29th day, catalepsy and akinesia were assessed. The rats were then euthanized, and the brain was extracted for estimation of endogenous antioxidants (MDA: malondialdehyde, GSH: reduced glutathione, CAT: catalase, SOD: superoxide dismutase), nitrative (nitrite) stress markers, neuroinflammatory cytokines, and neurotransmitter levels and their metabolites (3,4-dihydroxyphenylacetic acid (DOPAC), dopamine (DA), norepinephrine (NE), serotonin (5-HT), 5-hydroxyindoleacetic acid (5-HIAA), and homovanillic acid (HVA)). Akinesia and catatonia caused by ROT reduced the levels of endogenous antioxidants (GSH, CAT, and SOD), elevated the MDA level, and altered the levels of nitrites, neurotransmitters, and their metabolites. Sterubin restored the neurobehavioral deficits, oxidative stress, and metabolites of altered neurotransmitters caused by ROT. Results demonstrated the anti-Parkinson's activities of sterubin in ROT-treated rats.

Abstract

In 2021 JET exploited its unique capabilities to operate with T and D–T fuel with an ITER-like Be/W wall (JET-ILW). This second major JET D–T campaign (DTE2), after DTE1 in 1997, represented the culmination of a series of JET enhancements—new fusion diagnostics, new T injection capabilities, refurbishment of the T plant, increased auxiliary heating, in-vessel calibration of 14 MeV neutron yield monitors—as well as significant advances in plasma theory and modelling in the fusion community. DTE2 was complemented by a sequence of isotope physics campaigns encompassing operation in pure tritium at high T-NBI power. Carefully conducted for safe operation with tritium, the new T and D–T experiments used 1 kg of T (vs 100 g in DTE1), yielding the most fusion reactor relevant D–T plasmas to date and expanding our understanding of isotopes and D–T mixture physics. Furthermore, since the JET T and DTE2 campaigns occurred almost 25 years after the last major D–T tokamak experiment, it was also a strategic goal of the European fusion programme to refresh operational experience of a nuclear tokamak to prepare staff for ITER operation. The key physics results of the JET T and DTE2 experiments, carried out within the EUROfusion JET1 work package, are reported in this paper. Progress in the technological exploitation of JET D–T operations, development and validation of nuclear codes, neutronic tools and techniques for ITER operations carried out by EUROfusion (started within the Horizon 2020 Framework Programme and continuing under the Horizon Europe FP) are reported in (Litaudon et al Nucl. Fusion accepted), while JET experience on T and D–T operations is presented in (King et al Nucl. Fusion submitted).

Abstract

JET, the world’s largest operating tokamak with unique Be/W wall and tritium handling capability, completed a Deuterium-Tritium (D-T) campaign in 2021 (Maggi et al 29th Fusion Energy Conf. ) following a decade of preparatory experiments, dedicated enhancements, technical rehearsals and training (Horton et al 2016 Fusion Eng. Des. 109–111 925). Operation with tritium raises significant technical, safety and scientific challenges not encountered in standard protium or deuterium operation. This contribution describes the tritium operational requirements, pulses and technical preparations, new operating procedures, lessons learned and details on the achieved operational availability and performance. The preparation and execution of the recent JET tritium experiments benefitted from the previous experience in 1991 (Preliminary Tritium Experiment), 1997 (DTE1 campaign) and 2003 (Trace Tritium Campaigns) and consisted of the following five phases: technical rehearsals and scenario preparation, tritium commissioning, 100% tritium campaign, D-T campaign (DTE2), tritium clean-up. Following the clean-up JET resumed normal operation and is currently undertaking a further D-T campaign (DTE3).

5. Mental health crisis in Somalia: a review and a way forward

Abstract

Abstract Background Somalia has been without an effective government since the collapse of the military regime in 1991. Years of conflict, disasters, and insecurity have all contributed to very low scores for most health indicators due to poor governance, protracted conflict, underdevelopment, economic decline, poverty, social and gender inequality, and environmental degradation. The three-decade long protracted conflict has led to widespread psychosocial trauma, social deprivation and substance abuse with devastating consequences on mental health. A WHO study showed Somalia has one of the highest rates of mental illness in the world. The main aim of this study is to assist policy makers in setting priorities for the design and delivery of interventions to promote mental health and psychosocial wellbeing in Somalia. Methods The study uses a systematic mapping technique (from January 1991 to May 2020) and data collected from public domain, to collect, collate, and present mental health data mainly from WHO’s Global Health Observatory. Since there is no primary database for Somalia’s public health research, the bibliographic databases used for mental health in this study included Medline, PubMed, CINAHL, PsycINFO, and Google Scholar. Data were extracted using techniques for web data mining for public health. Results Systematic mapping of mental health-related issues in Somalia showed that policy-related determinants and mental health services dominated (74.4%), followed by the disaster-related determinants and women’s health consequences (39.3%). The ratio of the number of beds for mental health in general hospitals (per 100,000 population) in Somalia in 2017 is 0.5 compared to the Eastern Mediterranean region (EMR) at 6.4 and globally at 24. One of the biggest casualties of the civil war was loss of essential human resources in healthcare as most either fled the country or were part of the victims of the war. Conclusions The vast scale of the mental health problems in Somalia and the priority setting guidelines for interventions to address the issues outlined in this paper, prompt a dire need that the Somali government and its national/international partners should prioritize and emphasize the need to invest in the prevention and the treatment of mental illness across the country.

Abstract

Salinity and waterlogging stresses have catastrophic effects on plants. Physiological and molecular mechanisms of plant responses to individual salinity and waterlogging stresses have been widely investigated. Several research studies have been conducted to understand the combined effects of salinity and waterlogging on plant growth, photosynthesis, and mineral homeostasis, but no systematic review has been performed yet to comprehend the cumulative effects of salinity and waterlogging on plants. This work employed a systematic approach to examine how plants respond to combined salinity and waterlogging stress compared to individual stresses, and to identify potential research gaps in this field. Our analysis indicates that combined salinity and waterlogging stress inhibits growth processes more strongly than salinity or waterlogging stress alone. In addition, the combined effect of salinity and waterlogging on photosynthesis and ionic homeostasis is greater than the sum of the individual effect of each. Our analysis further implies that tolerance to combined salinity and waterlogging stress is mostly determined by salinity tolerance. An examination of subgroups found that hydrophytes are more vulnerable to combined salinity and waterlogging than halophytes. We identified several research gaps that should be addressed in future research to enhance plant salinity and waterlogging stress tolerance.

7. Assessment of the potential impacts of climate change on the hydrology at catchment scale: modelling approach including prediction of future drought events using drought indices

Abstract In this study, the Distributed Catchment-Scale Model, DiCaSM, was used to study the impact of climate change on the hydrology of the Eden catchment, north east of Scotland. As a first step, the model was successfully calibrated and validated for a 42 years period. The DiCaSM model was then used to study the impact of climate change on the water availability. Data from the UKCP09 Climate change scenarios for the 2010–2039, 2040–2069 and 2070–2099 periods, considering three gas emission scenarios (low, medium and high), were applied. The results indicated that the greatest decrease in streamflow and groundwater recharge was projected to happen under the high emission scenarios towards the end of the century, i.e. between 2070 and 2099. This would mainly be due to the summers becoming drier. Meanwhile, the projected increase in winter precipitation did not contribute much towards groundwater recharge due the projected increases in evapotranspiration and soil moisture deficit. The following drought indices were calculated and were found to be effective in predicting different types of droughts: the Standardized Precipitation Index, SPI, and the Standardized Precipitation Evaporation Index, SPEI, the Reconnaissance Drought Index, RDI, the modified adjusted RDI, the Soil Moisture Deficit, SMD and the Wetness Index, WI. The findings of the study have broader implications in water resources management considering the future changes in climate.

8. How Do Plants Respond to Combined Drought and Salinity Stress?—A Systematic Review

Plants are frequently exposed to one or more abiotic stresses, including combined salinity-drought, which significantly lowers plant growth. Many studies have been conducted to evaluate the responses of plants to combined salinity and drought stress. However, a meta-analysis-based systematic review has not been conducted yet. Therefore, this study analyzed how plants respond differently to combined salinity-drought stress compared to either stress alone. We initially retrieved 536 publications from databases and selected 30 research articles following a rigorous screening. Data on plant growth-related, physiological, and biochemical parameters were collected from these selected articles and analyzed. Overall, the combined salinity-drought stress has a greater negative impact on plant growth, photosynthesis, ionic balance, and oxidative balance than either stress alone. In some cases, salinity had a greater impact than drought stress and vice versa. Drought stress inhibited photosynthesis more than salinity, whereas salinity caused ionic imbalance more than drought stress. Single salinity and drought reduced shoot biomass equally, but salinity reduced root biomass more than drought. Plants experienced more oxidative stress under combined stress conditions because antioxidant levels did not increase in response to combined salinity-drought stress compared to individual salinity or drought stress. This study provided a comparative understanding of plants’ responses to individual and combined salinity and drought stress, and identified several research gaps. More comprehensive genetic and physiological studies are needed to understand the intricate interplay between salinity and drought in plants.

Abstract High resistance to antimicrobials is associated with biofilm formation responsible for infectious microbes to withstand severe conditions. Therefore, new alternatives are necessary as biofilm inhibitors to control infections. In this study, the antimicrobial and antibiofilm activities of Fagonia indica extracts were evaluated against MDR clinical isolates. The extract exhibited its antibiofilm effect by altering adherence and disintegration of bacterial cell wall. Fagonia indica has antibacterial effect as minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) values ranging from 125 to 500 µg mL-1 and minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) value was 500-3000 µg mL-1 against multidrug resistant (MDR) clinical isolates. The extract exhibited its antibiofilm effect by altering adherence and disintegration of bacterial cell wall. Fagonia indica had antibacterial effect as minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) values ranging from 125 to 500 µg mL-1 and minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) value was 500-3000 µg mL-1 against MDR isolates. The maximum inhibitory effects of Fagonia indica chloroform extract on biofilm formation was observed on Staphylococcus aureus (71.84%) followed by Klebsiella pneumoniae (70.83%) after 48 hrs showing that inhibition is also time dependent. Our results about bacterial cell protein leakage indicated that MDR isolates treated with chloroform extract of Fagonia indica showed maximum protein leakage of K. pneumoniae (59.14 µg mL-1) followed by S. aureus (56.7 µg mL-1). Cell attachment assays indicated that chloroform extract resulted in a 43.5-53.5% inhibition of cell adherence to a polystyrene surface. Our results revealed that extracts of Fagonia indica significantly inhibited biofilm formation among MDR clinical isolates, therefore, could be applied as antimicrobial agents and cost effective biofilm inhibitor against these MDR isolates.

Abstract

One of the most common postoperative problems is nausea and vomiting. Although using some anesthetic materials has been considered as the mainstay of this phenomenon, the exact factors are not known. Because of several morbidities associated with postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV), its prevention and treatment has been a challenge for physicians, so several drugs have been recommended for this purpose. Based on the documented antiemetic specificity of ginger, we evaluated and compared the effects of preoperative administration of ginger on PONV with ondansetron administration as the standard medication. The participants included 100 patients with cholelitiasis who were candidate for laparoscopic cholecystectomy. Patients were divided into two groups: group A comprised 50 patients who received 500 mg oral ginger 1 h before surgery, and group B included 50 patients who received 4 mg intravenous ondansetron before completion of surgery. Antiemetic efficacy was assessed by visual analogue scale scores of nausea intensity at 0, 4, 8, 16, and 24 h after surgery and frequency of vomiting during the evaluation period. Although multifactor analysis showed that nausea severity was significantly lower in the ginger group, the data indicated that except 16 h after operation, the differences between two groups in the frequency of vomiting was not significant. In conclusion, though complementary studies are needed to have a strong suggestion, based on this study, we recommend administration of oral ginger 1 h before operation to control the severity of PONV in patients undergoing laparoscopic cholecystectomy. Abstract

Leadership plays a vital role in managing organizations and one of the key issues is managing change. Pakistani public schools are educational organizations which have been subject to top-down change in recent years. The chief actor of change, the public school teacher is assumed to be ignorant of the dynamics of change. This quantitative research was conducted to know the awareness of public school teachers about the dynamics of change and their understanding of school principal’s role in change. For this purpose a survey was conducted with the teachers of public secondary schools of Punjab in three districts. Multistage sampling technique was used to draw the sample of 135 (male 69 and female 66) teachers. Data was collected through a personally constructed questionnaire to suit the purpose. The Cronbach Alpha (Coefficient of Reliability) of the questionnaire was 0.947. Research findings reveal that public school teachers are fully aware of the importance of change. In fact they are ready to assume the responsibility for second order change. However, the system is not ready to initiate bottom-up change; the leadership role is critical and leadership training is the need of the hour that will gear the system in the desired direction.

Abstract

Abstract In this work, heterojunction, solar cells based on inorganic semiconductors were fabricated at various thermal-annealing temperatures using vapor deposition techniques. The active layer primarily consists of a bilayer comprising a hole transporting copper oxide-CuO and an electron transporting zinc oxide-ZnO nanoparticles. It was observed that the power conversion efficiency-PCE increased from 0.06 to 0.08% with an increase in annealing temperature from 400 to 500 °C, possibly, as a result of increased absorption, in the visible region with increasing temperature. A significant increase in the crystallinity of single and bilayer films was also observed with increasing annealing temperature.

Abstract

Spin distributions for several evaporation residues populated in the 16O+154Sm system have been measured at projectile energy ≈ 6.2 MeV/A by using the charged particle–γ-coincidence technique. The measured spin distributions of the evaporation residues populated through incomplete fusion associated with ‘fast’ α and 2α-emission channels are found to be entirely different from fusion–evaporation channels. It is observed that the mean input angular momentum for the evaporation residues formed in incomplete fusion channel is relatively higher than that observed for evaporation residues in complete fusion channels. The feeding intensity profile of evaporation residues populated through complete fusion and incomplete fusion have also been studied. The incomplete fusion channels are found to have narrow range feeding only for high spin states, while complete fusion channels are strongly fed over a broad spin range and widely populated. Comparison of present results with earlier data suggests that the mean input angular momentum values are relatively smaller for spherical target than that of deformed target using the same projectile and incident energy highlighting the role of target deformation in incomplete fusion dynamics.

Abstract

Processing improves the visual quality of food; however, the ingredient and nutritional values may alter. In present study, the sugar samples (refined, raw, gur (Jaggery/jaggeree) and molasses) were collected from 20 different agro-climatic regions of Pakistan and analyzed for the chromium concentration, total phenolic and antioxidant activity, in order to evaluate the processing effect. The concentration of Cr was determined by digestion method using atomic absorption spectrophotometer, while antioxidant activity was determined by DPPH (1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl) and reducing power. It was observed that chromium content in Jaggery was 74% higher than raw sugar, while molasses showed 21.27% higher concentration versus jaggery. The total phenolic contents were found considerably higher in molasses (3751 μg GAE/g) followed by Jaggery (3285 μg GAE/g), raw sugar (27.75 μg GAE/g) and refined sugar (23.81 μg GAE/g). The DPPH scavenging activity and reducing power was also found dependent to sugar type. Form results, it can be concluded that processing significantly affected the chromium contents, total phenolics and antioxidant activity.

Patients with chronic subdural hematoma encounter certain difficulties in diagnosis, especially in elderly, due to the characteristically non-specific symptoms and signs. Abstract

The objective of the study was to assess the post-weaning growth response of Sahiwal calves reared on four different pre-weaning dietary regimens. The four diets were: (a) whole cow's milk, starter ration (SR; CP = 20%, total digestible nutrients (TDN) = 72%) and Berseem hay (H; Egyptian clover; CP = 21%, TDN = 63%); (b) whole cow's milk + H; (c) milk replacer (MR; reconstituted to supplier specification; Sprayfo®) + SR + H; and (d) MR + H. The protein and fat percentages of reconstituted MR were 2.22 and 1.84, respectively. Milk or MR were fed at the rate of 10% of the calves’ body weight (BW) until 56 days of age, and then withdrawn gradually until weaned completely by 84 days of age. The average initial BW of calves in groups A, B, C and D were 56.3 ± 1.0, 47.5 ± 1.0, 40.4 ± 1.0 and 30.3 ± 1.0 kg, respectively. Initially, there were 12 calves in each group with six of each sex; however, one male calf died from each of groups B and C and were not replaced. During the post-weaning period, 13 to 24 weeks, the calves were fed a single total mixed ration ad libitum based on maize, canola meal, wheat straw and molasses containing 16% CP and 70% TDN. Daily feed intake and weekly BW gains were recorded. The data were analyzed by MIXED model analysis procedures using the statistical program SAS. The intake of calves as percent of their BW, feed conversion ratio and cost per kg of BW gain were not different (P > 0.05) across treatments. The daily gain at 24 weeks of age for the pre-weaning treatments A, B, C and D were 746 ± 33, 660 ± 33, 654 ± 33 and 527 ± 33 g/day and the final liveweights of calves were 119 ± 4.2, 102 ± 4.2, 95 ± 4.2 and 75 ± 4.2 kg, respectively. Gains were influenced significantly (P < 0.05) by pre-weaning treatments. The calves fed MR and H only during the pre-weaning period were unable to catch up post weaning with calves on other dietary treatments. The calves fed whole milk from birth at the rate of 10% of liveweight together with concentrates had higher weaning weight and superior growth rate post weaning as well. Thus, pre-weaning feeding was important for higher weaning weights and superior growth rates post weaning.

Abstract

Effects of parity, lactation length, calving season, calf sex and service period on milk yield for 426 records in 134 Nili Ravi buffaloes maintained at the National Agricultural Research Center, Islamabad Pakistan during 1988-2004 were evaluted. The effects of parity, calving season, calf sex and service period were also recorded on lactation length of these buffaloes. The overall average milk yield was 1831.6 ± 530.9 litres per lactation and the average lactation length was 273.3 ± 52.8 days. Milk production was lower in first lactation than that in 2nd, 3rd and 4th lactations (P300 days after calving (2045.6 ± 588.5 litres per lactation) was significantly higher than that of the animals conceiving within 31–100 days after calving (1846.1 ± 527.5 liters per lactation). The lactation length was not affected by parity, calving season, calf sex and service period. Abstract

Background: To determine the frequency of urinary tract injury during Obstetrics and Gynaecological surgery in the tertiary care teaching set up. Methods: In this descriptive study, all the patients who were admitted for obstetrical and gynaecological surgery irrespective of the time of procedure and level of surgical expertise were evaluated. Forty seven patients with bladder injury and six patients with ureteric injury were included. Site of injury, type and nature of surgical procedure, and therapeutic success rate with respect to time of diagnosis and treatment was analyzed. Injury was defined as entry into the urinary tract lumen, crushing, ligation or/and excision of urinary tract, leakage of urine, post operative hydronephrosis, or extravasation of contrast outside the urinary tract with or without renal damage that required surgical intervention. Results: The injury incidence in obstetrics emergency and elective procedures was 0.69% with urinary bladder the most frequently injured organ (88.67%). No ureteric injury was recorded in obstetrical patients. In gynaecological patients ratio of injuries to bladder and ureter was 4.84%. Most of the ureteric injuries (50%) were encountered in emergency laparotomy, followed by malignant ovarian tumours (33.3%). Most of the injuries were picked and dealt during the same surgical session with 15% of the patients requiring reoperation. Outcome of the management was satisfactory with no renal damage and mortality. Conclusion: Good knowledge of pelvic anatomy and practicing the visualization of ureteric course in routine patients will be helpful to safeguard it during complicated cases.

Abstract

A study was conducted to evaluate the utility of Marek’s disease vaccination in day-old broilers reared under local conditions. Day-old broilers were vaccinated with Rispen strain vaccine, HVT or combination of HVT and Rispen and were observed for weight gain, mortality and humoral and cell mediated immune responses. Mortality rate did not differ among any of the vaccinated groups and unvaccinated controls. Marek’s disease vaccination had no effect on the titre of the Newcastle disease vaccine. Similarly cell mediated immune response of different groups were also non-significant as measured by reaction to phytohaemagglutinin. The study shows that vaccination against Marek’s disease in day-old broilers does not offer any advantage under local poultry farming practices.

A series of metal-impregnated alumina samples were prepared by the incipient wetness impregnation technique. The surface areas of the powdered samples (A L and A BET ) were determined by the two most common methods, i.e. the Langmuir method and the BET method. The adsorbates used were methanol, ethanol, l-propanol and n-butanol (n-aliphatic alcohols) which were designated C 1 , C 2 , C 3 and C 4 , respectively. It was observed that A L and A BET of the adsorbent occupied by the adsorbate molecules decreased from C 1 to C 4 . It was also noted that the variation of A L and A BET with temperature followed exactly the same trend.

Abstract

The concentration of potentially toxic chromium metal ions in sediments and liquid waste samples from selected tanneries was measured by atomic absorption spectrophotometry after digestion with nitric acid. The data obtained revealed the presence of elevated levels of chromium metal ions in waste samples relative to the NEQS (National Environmental Quality Standards) require-ments. A new process entitled IERECHROM (Ion Exchange REmoval of CHROMium) has been developed for the removal and separation of chromium ions from sediments using zeolite-3A. The factors affecting chromium ion removal include exchanger concentration, pH, shaking time and temperature. The applicability of the Freundlich. Dubinin–Radushkevich and virial isotherm equations to the system has been examined. The thermodynamic parameters °LH0, °LG0 and °LS0 were calculated using the virial isotherm expression. The results suggest that natural aluminosilicates such as zeolite-3A can be utilised as low-cost ion-exchange and sorbent materials because of their selectivities for the removal of chromium ions and various other heavy metals.

Abstract

The adsorption of cobalt on lead dioxide from aqueous solutions has been optimized with respect to the shaking time, the amount of adsorbent, the pH and the concentration of adsorbate at 293 K. Under such optimum conditions, the adsorption of cobalt on lead dioxide has been studied at different temperatures and the process found to be endothermic with the distribution coefficient (K D ) increasing with increasing temperature. The data fitted very well to the Langmuir, Freundlich and Dubinin–adushkevich isotherms, allowing the corresponding constants to be calculated. Values of ΔH 0 and ΔS 0 were calculated from the slope and intercept of the plots of In K D versus 1/T. The value of ΔG 0 , which decreased with increasing temperature, showed that the adsorption is more favourable at higher temperatures.

Organic vapours such as ethyl methyl ketone, methyl acetate, methyl alcohol, diethyl ether, acetone and acetaldehyde were adsorbed on to the chromatographic silica gel between 273 K and 297 K under a vacuum of 10 –4 to 10 –5 Torr. A Cahn 1000 electrobalance and an X–Y Beckman chart recorder were used for recording the data. Kinetic parameters such as rate constant, Knudsen diffusivities, bulk diffusivities and effective diffusivities have been calculated employing the Fick-type equation. The effect of temperature on the sorption of these organic vapours has also been discussed.

The porous nature of alumina has been investigated using various techniques. The values obtained for moisture content, surface area, pore volume, average particle size and porosity were 22%, 116 m 2 /g, 0.76 cm 3 /g, 17.0±0.5 μm and 68.0%, respectively. The adsorption isotherms of Nd III , Pr III and Er III on alumina from aqueous solution have been obtained at different temperatures. All these adsorption isotherms obey the Langmuir, Freundlich and Dubinin-Radushkevich isotherm equations. Thermodynamic parameters such as the free energy, entropy and enthalpy of adsorption have been computed and interpreted. It is noteworthy that the adsorption of Pr III and Nd III increases with decreasing temperature while the reverse is observed for Er III .

The adsorption of europium on activated charcoal has been studied as a function of shaking time, pH, concentration of adsorbate and temperature. The adsorption of europium obeys the Langmuir and Dubinin-Radushkevich isotherms. Thermodynamic quantities such as ΔH 0 and ΔS 0 have been calculated from the slopes and intercepts of plots of In K D versus 1/T. The influence of different cations and anions on europium adsorption has been examined. The adsorption of other metal ions on activated charcoal has been investigated under specified conditions to check their selectivity for europium. As a result, europium has been successfully removed from a mixture containing Ba, Sr, Ru, Cs, Cr, Nd, Pr and In. Approximately 96% of the europium adsorbed on the activated charcoal was recovered using 45 ml of 3 M HNO 3 . X-ray fluorescence spectrometry was used for measuring the europium concentration.

Abstract

The use of virtual reality (VR) in learning is a manifestation of the rapid development of science and technology today. Even so, there are still not many studies that comprehensively discuss the use of VR in learning mathematics. This research aims to analyze studies related to this topic from 2018 to 2022 using the PRISMA protocol. Article searches in the Scopus and ERIC databases yielded 13 articles. Next, it will be divided into five themes: mathematical learning outcome types, VR types, research subject, research approach, VR role in affecting mathematics learning, and main topics in mathematics using VR-based learning. The results of this systematic literature review are expected to help develop further research by paying attention to important things that need to be improved when using VR while learning mathematics.
