Different theories of cross-cultural communication developed by researchers in the field of humanities including cultural anthropology, social psychology, cognitive science, etc., offer a variety of ways to classify national cultures. At the same time, many agree that there is a need for finding clear and measurable fundamental parameters underlying any national culture. The article substantiates the use of the parameter of individualism vs. collectivism, already tested in the framework of anthropology and philosophy of culture with regard to both Western and non-Western cultures, as an effective way for cultural comparison. The article aims to give an overview of various theories of cross-cultural interaction and their elements; to examine where they overlap or diverge; to look into the correlation between individualist/collectivist value orientations and behavior; and to study this parameter realization on a number of cases. The study is based on philosophical, anthropological, and cultural psychological theories, including the theory of guilt and shame cultures by R. Benedict, theory of self–presentations by R. Baumeister and D. Hutton, theory of personality’s self-construction by H. Marcus and S. Kitayama, as well as theory of cultural logics by A. Leung and D. Cohen. As an empirical confirmation of the above theoretical approaches, the article provides real-life examples, collected by the author. Literature was subject to categorical analysis. Empirical data was collected and analyzed using methods such as participant observation and discourse analysis. The comparative approach and hermeneutics techniques served as a general methodological prism. The study shows that, at least since the 1960s, specialists in the field of cultural studies have been increasingly discovering limitations and inconsistencies in theories that previously claimed to be universal: many of the models which originated in the West do not adequately represent non-Western cultures. The study proves the workability of the parameter of individualism vs. collectivism for interpretation of behavioral inconsistencies between people of different cultures. This parameter is compatible with a wide range of frameworks and shows a clear correlation between behavioral characteristics in different cultures and allows to interpret phenomena that were previously uninterpretable.

In this contribution we argue that cross-cultural competence (CCC or 3C) is being an indispensable proficiency in professional work of diplomats worldwide despite any changes that happened in professional interaction due to the recent COVID-19 pandemic. It is also suggested that deglobalizing processes significantly strengthened by COVID-19 have made the necessity for specialists professionally involved in international relations to acquire cross-cultural competence even greater than before. The current global situation shows that deglobalization — slowing down of globalization in all spheres of life — is a new reality and it is important to adjust to it as soon as possible. Cross-cultural competence is defined here as a complex of theoretical knowledge and key practical skills enabling to efficiently and successfully communicate with the representatives of different cultures and religious traditions as well as to feel psychologically comfortable in a foreign environment. A reduced number of personal business interactions lead to the urge for their higher efficiency that is supposed to be reflected in a better understanding of the interlocutor’s motivations, stands and reactions. At the same time cultural specifics remains the main factor shaping human communication whether it is conducted offline or online. Today as the tendency to conduct online conferences and meetings increases, we witness an increased need to learn to understand the attitudes of our virtual interlocutors, who are coming from various national cultures and traditions. In the course of online meetings, the necessity to correctly decipher their body language, for example, has decreased — one can hardly see a full figure on the PC screen. And consequently, verbal communication started to prevail over non-verbal one increasing the demand for proper interpretation of words, phrases, tone, mimics and gestures that are still very widely used during virtual communication. The next step would be using the most relevant arguments and approaches to deliver one’s own position and/or opinion. To successfully apply both mechanisms — of receiving messages and replying to them — during communication of people from different national cultures it would require the knowledge of cultural specifics that is provided by cross-cultural competence courses, training, seminars, or any other educational programmes. Programmes in cross-cultural competence are supposed to include at least three following components: 1) regional studies, 2) axiological orientations, 3) models and norms of behavior, while axiological orientations are seen as the most important one. Finally, the conclusion is made about a serious need to include cross-cultural competence programmes into the training of diplomats-to-be at the early stages of their professional education. At the same time, it is highly recommended for professional upgrade of the already serving diplomats worldwide. The methodological approach used in the present research combines content analysis of the post-COVID publications by the leading international experts in the diplomatic field as well as acting diplomats with the Developmental Model of Intercultural Sensitivity (DMIS) elaborated by the prominent American sociologist Milton Bennet. The latter is a six-level sсheme, according to which it is possible to figure the level of person’s skillfulness in cross-cultural communication.

Two field experiments were carried out in the feed crop studies station of the Ministry of Agriculture - Haditha agriculture division located in the village of Sakran - Haditha district 260 km west of Baghdad. The location lies on longitude 42° 22' 21'' east and longitude 34° 08' 23'' north, and 80 m above sea level, On the ground dimensions (21 × 30 m) for each experiment, during the autumn season 2018. The aim of this study is to find out the role of soil surface crusting and its relationship with tillage pattern, irrigation interval and its relationship with soil moisture content, productivity of mung bean, under surface and drip irrigation methods. The treatments of each experiment were distributed individually using Split-Plot Design, with three replications. Treatments were distributed randomly, with each experiment included two experiments on six treatments using zero tillage mode T0, minimum tillage T1 and conventional tillage T2 and two irrigation intervals are two days I1 and four days I2. The results showed superiority of seasonal water consumption values for both irrigation methods when a comma spacing irrigations four days (I2) it reached 403.51 mm and 207.058 mm for the methods of surface irrigation and drip irrigation respectively, T1I1 treatment was superior over similar surface irrigation treatments in grain yield, where the grain yield of 2.52 t ha-¹, T2I1 treatment also was superior in grain yields, reaching to 1,745 t ha-1, when drip irrigation method was used, The results showed that the longest height and the highest dry root weight was for T0I2 treatment reached to 0.33m and 14 gm, respectively when drip irrigation method was used, while the root length for the T1I1 treatment was 0.29 m and the highest dry root weight of 13 g was for T2I1 treatment when drip irrigation method was used also, The water use efficiency by using drip irrigation method was superior by 1.408 kg m-3 for T2I1 treatment and the highest water use efficiency was 1.11 kg m-3 for T1I1 treatment when surface irrigation method used

Dystocia is a critical obstetrical problem in farm animals and is classified into maternal or fetal dystocia. The maternal causes of dystocia include different causes such as uterine torsion (UT), failure of cervical dilation (FCD), and uterine inertia (UI). Maternal dystocia induces massive oxidative stress due to increased production of free radicals with high levels of malondialdehyde (MDA). Little information is available on oxidants and antioxidant biomarkers and blood lactate (bLac) in parturient buffaloes with maternal dystocia. The current research aimed to clarify different causes of maternal dystocia in buffaloes and the association between the oxidative stress of parturient buffaloes and different types of maternal dystocia. Thirty-five parturient buffaloes were included in this study. Parturient buffaloes included normal parturition (NP; n=7), UT (n=23), FCD (n=4), and UI (n=1). Ten-ml blood samples were collected via jugular vein puncture into two tubes; plain vacutainer tubes for separation of serum to measure bLac and heparin coated vacutainer tube for separation of plasma for determination of MDA, glutathione peroxidase (GPx), and total antioxidant capacity (TAC). The results revealed that the major cause of maternal dystocia in the included buffaloes was UT. The UT was commonly post-cervical, clockwise, and > 180°. UT negatively affected both dam survival and calf viability. In addition, evaluation of oxidants and antioxidants biomarkers indicated that maternal dystocia causes more oxidative stress added to physiological stress of calving. This study found that, 4-days post-treatment period was not sufficient to resume antioxidant defense mechanism in UT buffaloes as no significant changes had been detected throughout the sampling period after treatment of UT. Moreover, evaluation of both GPx and bLac indicated their possible detection as indicators for prognosis of UT cases, where the concentration of GPx was significantly lower and the concentration of bLac was significantly higher in dead/culled buffaloes with UT.

Abstract Background Fungal peroxidases are oxidoreductases that utilize hydrogen peroxide to catalyze lignin biodegradation. Results PER-K (peroxidase synthesis codon gene) was transformed from Aspergillus niger strain AN512 deposited in the National Center for Biotechnology Information with the accession number OK323140 to Escherichia coli strain (BL21-T7 with YEp356R recombinant plasmid) via calcium chloride heat-shock method. The impact of four parameters (CaCl2 concentrations, centrifugation time, shaking speed, growth intensity) on the efficacy of the transformation process was evaluated. Furthermore, peroxidase production after optimization was assessed both qualitatively and quantitatively, as well as SDS-PAGE analysis. The optimum conditions for a successful transformation process were as follows: CaCl2 concentrations (50 mM), centrifugation time (20 min), shaking speed (200 rpm), and growth optical density (0.45). PCR and gel electrophoresis detect DNA bands with lengths 175, 179, and 211 bps corresponding to UA3, AmpR, and PER-K genes respectively besides partially sequencing the PER-K gene. Pyrogallol/hydrogen peroxide assay confirmed peroxidase production, and the activity of the enzyme was determined to be 3924 U/L. SDS-PAGE analysis also confirms peroxidase production illustrated by the appearance of a single peroxidase protein band after staining with Coomassie blue R-250. Conclusion A successful peroxidase-gene (PER-K) transformation from fungi to bacteria was performed correctly. The enzyme activity was screened, and partial sequencing of PER-K gene was analyzed successively. The protein 3D structure was generated via in silico homology modeling, and determination of binding sites and biological annotations of the constructed protein were carried out via COACH and COFACTOR based on the I-TASSER structure prediction.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) pose a constant threat to the environment and public health. There are numerous activities in the Greater Cairo area that emit and release significant amounts of PAHs. Concentrations of these PAHs are released into the air and mixed with surface water, limiting its use. In this study, 17 PAH compounds are mapped at eight sites along the Nile River and its tributaries in Greater Cairo. In addition, their removal efficiency is evaluated with the conventional treatment in eight water treatment plants. PAHs were analyzed using GC–MS from January to December 2018. Naphthalene, anthracene, fluorene, pyrene, and phenanthrene were detected. The total amount of PAHs in raw water was highest in Shamal Helwan (1,325 ± 631 ng/l) and lowest in Mostorod (468 ± 329 ng/l), and the removal ranged from 25 to 31%. Further research is needed to integrate other techniques to reduce PAHs using the conventional treatment, and more efforts should be made to reduce the presence and release of PAHs in raw water. HIGHLIGHTS All detected PAHs correlate with each other and are of similar origin.; Pulsator clarifiers were more effective than recirculating sludge in the reduction of PAH.; The maximum rate of PAH removal by the conventional treatment was 31% in the study.; Source prevention and additional treatment are required for effective PAH reduction.;

Background and Aim: The reproductive performance of dairy cows is of a high economic value to maintain efficient and sustainable productivity. Postpartum anestrus is one of the major infertility problems that cause limitation of dairy cow reproductive performance and productivity. The previous studies have reported using a polyherbal formulation for different purposes, including reproductive performance. This study was conducted to examine the efficacy of polyherbal formulation administration on the reproductive performance of cows and to establish the oral administration of polyherbal formulations as a safe, effective, and economic treatment for dairy cows with postpartum anestrus due to nutritional disorders, negative energy balance, high milk production, and/or heat stress. Materials and Methods: A total of 14 dairy cows with postpartum anestrus were randomly divided into two groups, which were subjected to oral administration of distilled water that served as the control (Ctrl; n=5) or polyherbal treatment (polyherbal treated; n=9) for two shots of treatment (each for 3 successive days) with a 10-day interval. Blood sampling and ultrasonography were performed before treatment and after the first and second shots of treatment. Progesterone (P4) assay was also performed. Results: The estrus induction rate was 66.7% after the first shot of treatment in the polyherbal-treated group, which increased significantly to 88.9% after the second shot of treatment, compared with the Ctrl group (20%). The estrus response was confirmed by ultrasonography and P4 hormone assay, wherein the polyherbal treatment significantly increased the P4 concentration in the polyherbal-treated group after the second shot of treatment compared to that before treatment and in the Ctrl group at all time points. On pregnancy diagnosis, the treated dairy cows showed conception rates of 66.7% and 20.0% in the polyherbal-treated and Ctrl groups, respectively. In contrast, the concentration of malondialdehyde, an oxidative stress marker, and the total antioxidant capacity remained unchanged between both groups before and after treatment. Conclusion: The polyherbal formulation containing tubers of C. rotundus, M. pterygosperma, rhizome of Z. officinale, and A. cepa has the potential to induce estrus response and luteal activity in dairy cows and is a possible treatment for ovarian inactivity in dairy farms.

Pertussis (whooping coughalso called100-day cough) is an extremely infectious bacterial illness caused by Bordetella pertussis. B. pertussis spreads by coughs and sneezes of sick patients. The present study aimed to investigate the pertussis incidence, and thereafter, decide whether it is necessary to import a vaccine for this disease in Anbar province, Iraq. This descriptive cross-sectional study was performed by using the electronic archives of Pertussis patients in Anbar Governorate hospitals during a period of 10 years from 2009 to 2019. The incidence rate of pertussis has been calculated by dividing the annual cases number of infections by the size of the population at risk multiplied by 100,000. From 608 patients with pertussis registered at Anbar province hospitals, 315 (51.8%) and 293 (48.2%) of them were males and females, respectively, with an average age of 11.1±3 years old. The incidence rates of pertussis in 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019 were 0.014, 2.770, 1.427, 1.375, 3.421, 0.228, 0.00, 0.00, 21.321, 4.242, 0.604 in 100,000 people per year. The annual incidence ratio was 13.620/100,000 people per year. There was no statistically significant difference between males and females (P-value =0.130). There was one peak in the annual incidence rate of pertussis from 2009-2019 which happened in 2017. Lack of pertussis incidence during 2015-2016 was due to population displacement. Incidence of pertussis was more prevalent in the age group of 1-4 years old, compared to the1-year-old group. The incidence of pertussis decreased sharply during the last 2 years in Anbar province.

Waterbody extraction in the high-elevated region of the Tibetan Plateau from remote sensing imagery is an efficient way to investigate and monitor water resources. The intrusion of shadows, snow/ice, and other impediments are still unconvincing in cryospheric regions. Landsat 8 OLI images were used to extract water bodies by applying various spectral indices such as; Normalized Difference Water Index (NDWI), Modified Normalized Difference Water Index (MNDWI), Normalized Difference Moisture Index (NDMI), Automated Water Extraction Index (AWEI_sh), New Water Index (NWI), Water Ratio Index (WRI), and LST based Water Extraction Index (LBWEI). The result showed that the LBWEI index has high accuracy in all weather conditions from 93.66% to 97.63% and improved consistency around 3% to 7% as compared to other techniques. The study suggests the LBWEI technique may be used in the cryospheric region for quick evaluation and provide the baseline information for researchers in algorithm developments.

The absorption performance and evolution of the organic dye disperse blue 1 (DB1) in dioxane at different concentrations was investigated. The nonlinear absorption coefficient has been measured through the open aperture Z-scan technique, whose values increased exponentially from 0.997×10-3 to 11.7×10-3 cm/W as the dye concentration increased from 3.7×10-5 to 74.6×10-5 M. Also, DB1 optical power limiting characteristics appeared at high laser light intensities, whereby very dilute solution of the order of ~10-4 M was sufficient to limit the transmitted ‎power of the incident laser light by ~90%.

Biogeochemical models are essential for the prediction and management of nitrogen (N) cycling in agroecosystems, but the accuracy of the denitrification and decomposition sub-modules is critical. Current models were developed before suitable soil N2 flux data were available, which may have led to inaccuracies in how denitrification was described. New measurement techniques, using gas chromatography and isotope-ratio mass spectrometry (IRMS), have enabled the collection of more robust N2, N2O and CO2 data. We incubated two arable soils – a silt-loam and a sand soil – for 34 and 58 d, respectively, with small field-relevant changes made to control factors during this period. For the silt-loam soil, seven treatments varying in moisture, bulk density and NO3- contents were included, with temperature changing during the incubation. The sandy soil was incubated with and without incorporation of litter (ryegrass), with temperature, water content and NO3- content changing during the incubation. The denitrification and decomposition sub-modules of DeNi, Coup and DNDC were tested using the data. No systematic calibration of the model parameters was conducted since our intention was to evaluate the general model structure or “default” model runs. Measured fluxes generally responded as expected to control factors. We assessed the direction of modeled responses to control factors using three categories: no response, a response in the same direction as measurements or a response in the opposite direction to measurements. DNDC responses were 14 %, 52 % and 34 %, respectively. Coup responses were 47 %, 19 % and 34 %, respectively. DeNi responses were 0 %, 67 % and 33 %, respectively. The magnitudes of the modeled fluxes were underestimated by Coup and DNDC and overestimated by DeNi for the sandy soil, while there was no general trend for the silt-loam soil. None of the models was able to determine litter-induced decomposition correctly. To conclude, the currently used sub-modules are not able to consistently simulate the denitrification and decomposition processes. For better model evaluation and development, we need to design better experiments, take more frequent measurements, use new or updated measurement techniques, address model complexity, add missing processes to the models, calibrate denitrifier microbial dynamics, and evaluate the anaerobic soil volume concept.

Abstract Social inclusion aims to achieve an inclusive society that entails respect for human diversity and upholds principles of equality and equity, allowing all groups to take part in the society. Universal Design (UD) promotes inclusiveness by supporting access for all and easy use of the built environment, thus eliminating any form of exclusion and discrimination. This study examines the UD application in Aswan’s administrative buildings. The study relied on the descriptive, analytical, and inductive approach, through the identification of deficiencies in the selected administrative buildings’ design, and the clarification of development strategies to make these buildings for all. The case study method has two processes (approaches) in evaluating the case study buildings; the first was by the researchers according to UD requirements using the study’s checklist; the second was by users according to UD principles using interviews and task sheets. This research aims at emphasizing the positive effects of UD application on the selected buildings. In addition, it also aims at determining the compatibility of those buildings with the UD concept. The study result showed that the case study buildings are not compatible considerably with the requirements of the UD and its principles. The research concluded that architects should consider UD requirements and principles when designing administrative buildings and when rehabilitating and developing the existing ones. Thus, the study’s outputs could be used as a guidance tool by architects and construction managers in introducing universally designed buildings to all users.

The present study discusses the insulation thickness effects on the underground oil pipeline life cycle overall costs and its sensitivity to economic parameters and environmental Emissions. The heating degree-day and life cycle cost procedures are used for the optimization and environmental analyses of the mazut oil pipeline. The insulation materials used are Rock wool, PF, and EPS regarding all the physical and economical parameters of insulation thickness. The results show that the optimum insulation thickness varies between 70.7 and 130.4 mm, the annual energy saving cost varies between 403.69 and 419.29 $/m, the payback periods vary between 0.331 and 0.887 years, the reductions in emissions at optimum insulation thickness marked 90.84% for Rock wool, 93.2% for PF, and 93.28% for EPS. Both lifetime and the unit cost of insulation is sensitive to the insulation thickness. Additionally, the increased discount rate and cost of insulation material per unit volume reduce the optimum insulation thickness. In conclusion, it is predictable that this research can supply a guide for engineers as insulation is used to decrease the total energy loss and total annual cost, which includes the fuel and insulation expenses of the pipeline of large diameters that are used to transmit viscous oil.

Abstract Background Fungal endophytes produce many secondary metabolites that can reduce root rot diseases. Soybean is a particularly important crop worldwide. Endophytic fungi can be isolated, identified, and incorporated into sustainable agriculture for the biological control of many diseases. Results The aim of this study was to isolate some endophytic fungi for controlling the most important diseases of soybean plants and to study the mechanisms underlying this biocontrol regarding the suppression of pathogens. Ten endophytic fungi were isolated from soybean plants. Among them, the 3 fungi isolates that exhibited a high percentage of antagonistic activity against Rhizoctonia solani, the causal pathogen of root rot disease of soybean plants, were identified as Trichoderma longibrachiatum S12, T. asperellum S11, and T. atroviride PHYTAT7. The 3 fungi isolates had the ability to produce pectinase and chitinase and to solubilize phosphors. Moreover, they produced siderophores and indole acetic acid (IAA), which have a strong effect on the growth of the plants. The 3 isolates reduced disease severity by 64, 60, and 55%, respectively than the infected control. Conclusion The results suggest that certain endophytic fungi associated with soybean plants have potential for the management of root rot diseases in soybean. Moreover, these isolates can be considered as having a growth-promoting effect in soybean plants.

Background Laparoscopic subtotal gastrectomy (LSG) for cancer is associated with good perioperative outcomes and superior quality of life compared with the open approach, albeit at higher cost. An economic evaluation was conducted to compare the two approaches. Methods A cost–effectiveness analysis between LSG and open subtotal gastrectomy (OSG) for gastric cancer was performed using a decision‐tree cohort model with a healthcare system perspective and a 12‐month time horizon. Model inputs were informed by a meta‐analysis of relevant literature, with costs represented in 2016 Canadian dollars (CAD) and outcomes measured in quality‐adjusted life‐years (QALYs). A secondary analysis was conducted using inputs extracted solely from European and North American studies. Deterministic (DSA) and probabilistic (PSA) sensitivity analyses were performed. Results In the base‐case model, costs of LSG were $935 (€565) greater than those of OSG, with an incremental gain of 0·050 QALYs, resulting in an incremental cost–effectiveness ratio of $18 846 (€11 398) per additional QALY gained from LSG. In the DSA, results were most sensitive to changes in postoperative utility, operating theatre and equipment costs, as well as duration of surgery and hospital stay. PSA showed that the likelihood of LSG being cost‐effective at willingness‐to‐pay thresholds of $50 000 (€30 240) per QALY and $100 000 (€60 480) per QALY was 64 and 68 per cent respectively. Secondary analysis using European and North American clinical inputs resulted in LSG being dominant (cheaper and more effective) over OSG, largely due to reduced length of stay after LSG. Conclusion In this decision analysis model, LSG was cost‐effective compared with OSG for gastric cancer.

Abstract Two-dimensional (2D) layered materials have an atomically thin and flat nature which makes it an ultimate candidate for spintronic devices. The spin-valve junctions (SVJs), composed of 2D materials, have been recognized as unique features of spin transport polarization. However, the magnetotransport properties of SVJs are highly influenced by the type of intervening layer (spacer) inserted between the ferromagnetic materials (FMs). In this situation, the spin filtering effect at the interfaces plays a critical role in the observation of the magnetoresistance (MR) of such magnetic structures, which can be improved by using promising hybrid structure. Here, we report MR of bilayer graphene (BLG), single-layer MoSe2 (SL-MoSe2), and BLG/SL-MoSe2 heterostack SVJs. However, before annealing, BLG and SL-MoSe2 SVJs demonstrate positive MR, but after annealing, BLG reverses its polarity while the SL-MoSe2 maintains its polarity and demonstrated stable positive spin polarizations at both interfaces due to meager doping effect of ferromagnetic (FM) contacts. Further, Co/BLG/SL-MoSe2/NiFe determines positive MR, i.e., ~ 1.71% and ~ 1.86% at T = 4 K before and after annealing, respectively. On the contrary, NiFe/BLG/SL-MoSe2/Co SVJs showed positive MR before annealing and subsequently reversed its MR sign after annealing due to the proximity-induced effect of metals doping with graphene. The obtained results can be useful to comprehend the origin of polarity and the selection of non-magnetic material (spacer) for magnetotransport properties. Thus, this study established a new paragon for novel spintronic applications.

The current work discusses the production and characterization of new biodegradable nanoparticles for biomedical applications based on insect chitosan. Chitosan has numerous features due to the presence of primary amine groups in repeating units, such as antibacterial and anticancer activities. When polyanion tripolyphosphate is added to chitosan, it creates nanoparticles with higher antibacterial activity than the original chitosan. In this study, the ionic gelation technique was used to make wasp chitosan nanoparticles (WCSNPs) in which TEM and FTIR were used to investigate the physicochemical properties of the nanoparticles. In addition, the antibacterial activities of chitosan nanoparticles against extended-spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL)- and carbapenemase-producing Klebsiella pneumoniae, Escherichia coli, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa were evaluated. The extracted wasp chitosan exhibited high solubility in acetic acid and met all standard criteria of all characterization testes for nanoparticles; the zeta potential indicated stable WCSNPs capable of binding to cellular membrane and increasing the cellular uptake. The produced WCSNPs showed growth inhibition activity against all tested strains, and the bacterial count was lower than the initial count. The inhibition percent of WCSNPs showed that the lowest concentration of WCSNPs was found to be effective against tested strains. WCSNPs’ antibacterial activity implies that they could be used as novel, highly effective antibacterial agents in a variety of biological applications requiring antibacterial characteristics.

Abstract Rhizobacteria have been reported as bioagents of bacterial diseases and plant growth promoters. The present in vitro study and greenhouse experiment aimed to evaluate the efficiency of Bacillus subtilis, B. amyloliquefaciens, Pseudomonas fluorescens, and P. aeruginosa for the control of bacterial wilt caused by Clavibacter michiganensis subsp. michiganensis and promoting the growth of tomato plants. Effect of formulated and cell suspensions on disease reduction and the pathogen colonization frequency in plants were assessed. The tested bacterial species were able to inhibit the growth of the causal pathogen in vitro. Under greenhouse conditions, the highest reduction in disease severity was detected in tomato plants treated with formulated B. amyloliquefaciens (74.4%), followed by P. aeruginosa (66.7%), while the lowest reduction occurred in tomato seedlings treated with cell suspensions of P. fluorescens (40%) and B. subtilis (53.3%). The four bacterial species produced siderophores, hydrogen cyanide and indole acetic acid in different concentrations. The study confirmed that the use of the four bacterial species as suspensions or formulations could be applied as future eco-friendly alternatives to the synthetic fungicides for controlling the bacterial wilt of tomato caused by C. michiganensis subsp. michiganensis.

Abstract Background Mosquito-borne pathogens are important causes of diseases in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Knowledge of the mosquito fauna is needed for the appropriate control of the vectors that transmit the pathogens and prevent the diseases they cause. An important first step is to have an up-to-date list of the species known to be present in the country. Original occurrence records were obtained from published literature and critically scrutinized to compile a list of the mosquito species that occur within the borders of the Kingdom. Results Fifty-one species have been recorded in the Kingdom; however, the occurrence of two of these species is unlikely. Thus, the mosquito fauna of the Kingdom comprises 49 species that include 18 anophelines and 31 culicines. Published records are provided for each species. Problematic records based on misidentifications and inappropriate sources are discussed and annotated for clarity. Conclusion Integrated morphological and molecular methods of identification are needed to refine the list of species and accurately document their distributions in the Kingdom.

Hydrogen storage has become a challenge for researchers of this era because it is a cheap, clean, and non-pollutant element existing in nature. The current study has been performed in order to calculate the structural, electronic, optical, and magnetic properties of perovskite hydrides XGaH3 (X = Rb, Cs, Fr) through the Cambridge serial total energy package code based on density functional theory. The comprehensive investigations have been made while utilizing three cations (Rb, Cs, and Fr) in the cubic form of the ABH3 symmetry phase. The electronic properties of the considered hydrides have been investigated to determine bandgap, total density of states, and partial density of states, and their trends are devised against frequency (eV) of incident radiations. XGaH3 hydrides have shown metallic behavior because no energy bandgap is noticed near the Fermi level. The lattice constants of RbGaH3, CsGaH3, and FrGaH3 by utilizing the Perdew–Burke–Ernzerhof-Generalized Gradient Approximation (PBE + GGA) functional are found to be 4.0754 Å, 4.2137 Å, and 3.1237 Å. The local density approximation functional has also been used for calculations of lattice parameters, which are observed to be 3.9287 Å, 4.0673 Å, and 3.9818 Å, respectively. Anti-ferromagnetism is observed through magnetic analysis of the studied hydrides XGaH3 (X = Rb, Cs, Fr). Regarding the optical analysis, FrGaH3 is found to be a more suitable material for hydrogen storage. These novel materials exhibit minimum energy loss with maximum conductivity. The gravimetric ratio for hydrogen storage capacity is determined to be 2.5 wt. %, 2.0 wt. %, and 2.1 wt. % for RbGaH3, CsGaH3, and FrGaH3, respectively. The present computational calculations of these hydrides are attempted for the first time, which may provide exceptional improvements for applications in hydrogen storage.

Two-dimensional (2D) layered materials and their heterostructures have opened a new avenue for next-generation spintronic applications, benefited by their unique electronic properties and high crystallinity with an atomically flat surface. Here, we report magnetoresistance of vertical magnetic spin-valve devices with multi-layer (ML) MoSe2 and its heterostructures with few-layer graphene (FLG). We employed a micro-fabrication procedure to form ultraclean ferromagnetic–non-magnetic–ferromagnetic interfaces to elucidate the intrinsic spin-transferring mechanism through both an individual material and combinations of 2D layered materials. However, it is revealed that the polarity of tunneling magnetoresistance (TMR) is independent of non-magnetic spacers whether the spin valve is composed of a single material or a hybrid structure, but it strongly depends on the interfaces between ferromagnetics (FMs) and 2D materials. We observed positive spin polarizations in ML-MoSe2 and FLG/ML-MoSe2/FLG tunnel junctions, whereas spin-valve devices comprised of FLG/ML-MoSe2 showed a reversed spin polarization and demonstrated a negative TMR. Importantly, in Co/FLG/ML-MoSe2/FLG/NiFe devices, the polarization of spin carriers in the FM/FLG interface remained conserved during tunneling through MoSe2 flakes in spin-transferring events, which is understandable by Julliere’s model. In addition, large TMR values are investigated at low temperatures, whereas at high temperatures, the TMR ratios are deteriorated. Furthermore, the large values of driving ac-current also quenched the amplitude of TMR signals. Therefore, our observations suggest that the microscopic spin-transferring mechanism between ferromagnetic metals and 2D materials played a momentous role in spin-transferring phenomena in vertical magnetic spin-valve junctions.

The representation of outsiders is a common theme in Irish drama as a method to interpret and reinterpret Irish national identity. More recently, Irish theatre has explored the meaning and experiences of the “new Irish” (Salis 2010, 43). This paper, through a postcolonial analysis, compares the experiences of the returned Irish migrant in Tom Murphy’s Conversations on a Homecoming (1985) to the fragility of tolerance exhibited toward the “other” by the native Irish in Donal O’Kelly’s Asylum! Asylum! (1994) and contrasts asylum to the celebration of Irish residency in The Cambria (2005). The analysis highlights perceptions on migration from Ireland and the complications of immigration to modern-day Ireland. The notions of home, Irishness and citizenship are explored against a backdrop of racism, othering and multiculturalism.

Abstract TiO2 nanoparticles were synthesized from titanium isopropoxide by a simple peptization method using sulfuric, nitric, and acetic acids. The effect of peptizing acid on physicochemical and photocatalytic properties of TiO2 powders was studied. The structural properties of synthesized TiO2 powders were analyzed by using XRD, TEM, N2-physisorption, Raman, DR UV-vis, FTIR, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy techniques. The characterization results showed that acetic acid peptization facilitated the formation of pure anatase phase after thermal treatment at 500 °C; in contrast, nitric acid peptization led to a major rutile phase formation (67%). Interestingly, the sample peptized using sulfuric acid yielded 95% anatase and 5% rutile phases. The photocatalytic activity of synthesized TiO2 nanoparticles was evaluated for degradation of selected organic dyes (crystal violet, methylene blue, and p-nitrophenol) in aqueous solution. The results confirmed that the TiO2 sample peptized using nitric acid (with rutile and anatase phases in 3:1 ratio) offered the highest activity for degradation of organic dyes, although, TiO2 samples peptized using sulfuric acid and acetic acid possessed smaller particle size, higher band gap energy, and high surface area. Interestingly, TiO2 sample peptized with nitric acid possessed relatively high theoretical photocurrent density (0.545 mAcm−2) and pore diameter (150 Å), which are responsible for high electron-hole separation efficiency and diffusion and mass transportation of organic reactants during the photochemical degradation process. The superior activity of TiO2 sample peptized with nitric acid is due to the effective transfer of photogenerated electrons between rutile and anatase phases.

Chemotherapeutic-related toxicity exacerbates the increasing death rate among cancer patients, necessitating greater efforts to find a speedy solution. An in vivo assessment of the protective effect of the C. macrocarpa leaves polar fraction of hydromethanolic extract against doxorubicin (Dox)-induced neurotoxicity was performed. Intriguingly, this fraction ameliorated Dox-induced cognitive dysfunction; reduced serum ROS and brain TNF-α levels, upregulated the brain nerve growth factor (NGF) levels, markedly reduced caspase-3 immunoexpression, and restored the histological architecture of the brain hippocampus. The in vivo study results were corroborated with a UPLC-ESI-MS/MS profiling that revealed the presence of a high percentage of the plant polyphenolics. Molecular modeling of several identified molecules in this fraction demonstrated a strong binding affinity of flavan-3-ol derivatives with TACE enzymes, in agreement with the experimental in vivo neuroprotective activity. In conclusion, the C. macrocarpa leaves polar fraction possesses neuroprotective activity that could have a promising role in ameliorating chemotherapeutic-induced side effects.

Symbiotic plant-fungi interaction is a promising approach to alleviate salt stress in plants. Moreover, endophytic fungi are well known to promote the growth of various crop plants. Herein, seven fungal endophytes were screened for salt tolerance; the results revealed that Aspergillus ochraceus showed a great potentiality in terms of salt tolerance, up to 200 g L−1. The indole acetic acid (IAA) production antioxidant capacity and antifungal activity of A. ochraceus were evaluated, in vitro, under two levels of seawater stress, 15 and 30% (v/v; seawater/distilled water). The results illustrated that A. ochraceus could produce about 146 and 176 µg mL−1 IAA in 15 and 30% seawater, respectively. The yield of IAA by A. ochraceus at 30% seawater was significantly higher at all tryptophan concentrations, as compared with that at 15% seawater. Moreover, the antioxidant activity of ethyl acetate extract of A. ochraceus (1000 µg mL−1) at 15 and 30% seawater was 95.83 ± 1.25 and 98.33 ± 0.57%, respectively. Crude extracts of A. ochraceus obtained at 15 and 30% seawater exhibited significant antifungal activity against F. oxysporum, compared to distilled water. The irrigation of barley plants with seawater (15 and 30%) caused notable declines in most morphological indices, pigments, sugars, proteins, and yield characteristics, while increasing the contents of proline, malondialdehyde, and hydrogen peroxide and the activities of antioxidant enzymes. On the other hand, the application of A. ochraceus mitigated the harmful effects of seawater on the growth and physiology of barley plants. Therefore, this study suggests that the endophytic fungus A. ochraceus MT089958 could be applied as a strategy for mitigating the stress imposed by seawater irrigation in barley plants and, therefore, improving crop growth and productivity.
