Abstract  The double diffusive convection in a horizontal anisotropic porous layer saturated with a Boussinesq binary fluid, which is heated and salted from below in the presence of Soret and DuFour effects is studied analytically using both linear and non-linear stability analyses. The linear analysis is based on the usual normal mode technique, while the non-linear analysis is based on a minimal representation of double Fourier series. The generalized Darcy model including the time derivative term is employed for the momentum equation. The critical Rayleigh number, wavenumbers for stationary and oscillatory modes, and frequency of oscillations are obtained analytically using linear theory. The effects of anisotropy parameter, solute Rayleigh number, and Soret and DuFour parameters on the stationary, oscillatory convection, and heat and mass transfer are shown graphically. Abstract  The effect of rotation and anisotropy on the onset of double diffusive convection in a horizontal porous layer is investigated using a linear theory and a weak nonlinear theory. The linear theory is based on the usual normal mode technique and the nonlinear theory on the truncated Fourier series analysis. Darcy model extended to include time derivative and Coriolis terms with anisotropic permeability is used to describe the flow through porous media. The effect of rotation, mechanical and thermal anisotropy parameters, and the Prandtl number on the stationary and overstable convection is discussed. It is found that the effect of mechanical anisotropy is to allow the onset of oscillatory convection instead of stationary. It is also found that the existence of overstable motions in case of rotating porous medium is not restricted to a particular range of Prandtl number as compared to the pure viscous fluid case. The finite amplitude analysis is performed to find the thermal and solute Nusselt numbers. The effect of various parameters on heat and mass transfer is also investigated. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract??The linear stability of a viscoelastic liquid saturated horizontal anisotropic porous layer heated from below and cooled from above is investigated by considering the Oldroyd type liquid. A generalized Darcy model, which takes into account the viscoelastic properties, the mechanical and thermal anisotropy is employed as momentum equation. The critical Rayleigh number, wavenumber, for stationary and oscillatory states and frequency of oscillation are determined analytically. It is shown that oscillatory instabilities can set in before stationary modes are exhibited. The effect of the viscoelastic parameter, the mechanical and thermal anisotropy parameters and specific heat ratio on the linear stability of the system is analyzed and presented graphically. Abstract  Two-fluid magnetoconvection in a vertical enclosure consisting of two regions, one electrically conducting and another electrically non-conducting is investigated analytically. The transport properties of both fluids are assumed constant. The resulting coupled non-linear equations are solved using regular perturbation method. It is found that the effect of negative electric load parameter E is to aid the flow while the effect of positive E is to oppose the flow as compared to the case when E=0. The linear stability of a viscoelastic fluid saturated densely packed horizontal porous layer heated from below and cooled from above is investigated by considering the Oldroyd-B type fluid. A generalized Darcy model, which takes into account the viscoelastic properties, is employed as momentum equation and a two-field model is used for energy equation each representing solid and fluid phases separately. Linear stability analysis suggests that, there is a competition between the processes of viscous relaxation and thermal diffusion that causes the first convective instability to be oscillatory rather than stationary. Analytical expression for the occurrence of oscillatory onset is obtained, and it is found that the necessary condition for the existence of the same is Λ < 1. The effect of thermal modulation on the onset of convection in a horizontal, anisotropic porous layer saturated by a viscoelastic fluid is investigated by a linear stability analysis. Darcy’s law with viscoelastic correction is used to describe the fluid motion. The perturbation method is used to find the critical Rayleigh number and the corresponding wavenumber for small amplitude thermal modulation. The stability of the system characterized by a correction Rayleigh number is calculated as a function of the thermal and mechanical anisotropy parameters, the viscoelastic parameters and the frequency of modulation. It is found that the onset of convection can be delayed or advanced by the factors represented by these parameters. The results of the problem have possible implications in mantle convection. Abstract. In this paper, we study the instabilities, which can occur when a horizontal sparsely filled porous layer saturated with a binary mixture with fast chemical reaction is heated from below or from above. Analytic expressions are found for the criteria for the onset of stationary and oscillatory convection in binary mixtures with chemical reaction. The reaction is assumed to be fast compared with the diffusion rate. We find that both a stationary instability and an oscillatory instability can occur as the first bifurcation, depending on the sign and the value of the heat of reaction. The effect of the Prandtl number, the separation parameter and the porous parameter are shown graphically. Some of the known results are derived as special cases. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
