In the last decade, growing evidence has emerged supporting a non-universal stellar Initial Mass Function (IMF) in massive galaxies, with a larger number of dwarf stars with respect to the Milky-Way (bottom-heavy IMF). However, a consensus about the mechanisms that cause IMF variations is yet to be reached. Recently, it has been suggested that stars formed early-on in cosmic time, via a star formation burst, could be characterised by a bottom-heavy IMF. A promising way to confirm this is to use relics, ultra-compact massive galaxies, almost entirely composed by these "pristine" stars. The INSPIRE Project aims at assembling a large sample of confirmed relics, that can serve as laboratory to investigate on the conditions of star formation in the first 1-3 Gyr of the Universe. In this third INSPIRE paper, we build a high signal-to-noise spectrum from five relics and one from five galaxies with similar sizes, masses, and kinematical properties, but characterised by a more extended star formation history (non-relics). Our detailed stellar population analysis suggests a systematically bottom-heavier IMF slope for relics than for non-relics, adding new observational evidence for the non-universality of the IMF at various redshifts and further supporting the above proposed physical scenario., Accepted for publication in MNRAS. 8 pages, 5 figures

The star cluster (SC) age distribution of the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) exhibits a gap from $\sim$ 4 to 10 Gyr ago, with an almost total absence of SCs. Within this age gap, only two confirmed SCs have been identified hitherto. Nonetheless, the star field counterpart does not show the same characteristics, making the LMC a peculiar galaxy where star formation history and cluster formation history appear to differ significantly. We re-analyzed the color-magnitude diagram (CMD) of the KMHK 1762 SC by using the deep optical photometry provided by the "Yes, Magellanic Clouds Again" survey, to robustly assess its age. First, we partially removed foreground and/or field stars by means of parallaxes and proper motions obtained from the {\it Gaia} Early Data Release 3. Then, we applied the Automated Stellar Cluster Analysis package to the cleaned photometric catalogue to identify the isochrone that best matches the CMD of KMHK 1762. The estimated age of KMHK 1762 is $\log (t) = 9.74 \pm 0.15$ dex ($\sim$5.5 Gyr), that is more than 2 Gyr older than the previous estimation which was obtained with shallower photometry. This value makes KMHK 1762 the third confirmed age gap SC of the LMC. The physical existence of a quiescent period of the LMC SC formation is questioned. We suggest it can be the result of an observational bias, originated by the combination of shallow photometry and limited investigation of the LMC periphery., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures. We present a study of the intra-cluster population of low-mass X-ray binaries (LMXB) residing in globular clusters (GC) in the central 1 $deg^2$ of the Fornax galaxy cluster. Differently from previous studies, which were restricted to the innermost regions of individual galaxies, this work is aimed at comparing the properties of the intra-cluster population of GC-LMXBs with those of the host galaxy. We use VLT Survey Telescope (VST) and Chandra observations. We identify 168 LMXBs residing in GCs and divide it into host-galaxy and intra-cluster objects based on their distance from the nearest galaxy in terms of effective radius. We found 82 intra-cluster GC-LMXBs and 86 objects that are hosted in galaxies. We perform a Gaussian mixture model to divide the population into red and blue GCs. As has been found for the innermost regions of galaxies, LMXBs tend to form in red and bright GCs in intra-cluster space as well. We find, however, that the likelihood of a red GC to host an LMXB decreases with galactocentric distance, but it remains approximately constant for the blue GC population. Investigating the X-ray properties of the LMXBs residing in GCs, we find a difference in the X-ray luminosity function between the intra-cluster and host-galaxy sample: both follow a power-law down to $\sim 8.5\times 10^{37}$ erg s$^{-1}$, which is consistent with field LMXBs for the intra-cluster sample, while the latter agree with previous estimates for LMXBs in GCs. We detect a tentative difference in the hardness ratio of two populations, where the intra-cluster GC-LMXBs appear to have harder spectra than the host-galaxy objects. We find the same trend when we compare red and blue GC-LMXBs: the spectra of the blue sample are harder spectra than those of the red sample. This result could suggest a relation between the spectral properties of LMXBs and the host GC colour and therefore its metallicity., Comment: Accepted by A&A

This work is based on high quality integral-field spectroscopic data obtained with the Multi Unit Spectroscopic Explorer (MUSE) on the Very Large Telescope (VLT). The 21 brightest ($m_B\leq 15$ mag) early-type galaxies (ETGs) inside the virial radius of the Fornax cluster are observed out to distances of $\sim2-3\ R_{\rm e}$. Deep imaging from the VLT Survey Telescope (VST) is also available for the sample ETGs. We investigate the variation of the galaxy structural properties as a function of the total stellar mass and cluster environment. Moreover, we correlate the size scales of the luminous components derived from a multi-component decomposition of the VST surface-brightness radial profiles of the sample ETGs with the MUSE radial profiles of stellar kinematic and population properties. The results are compared with both theoretical predictions and previous observational studies and used to address the assembly history of the massive ETGs of the Fornax cluster. We find that galaxies in the core and north-south clump of the cluster, which have the highest accreted mass fraction, show milder metallicity gradients in their outskirts than the galaxies infalling into the cluster. We also find a segregation in both age and metallicity between the galaxies belonging to the core and north-south clump and the infalling galaxies. We present FORS2@VLT follow-up photometry of YMCA-1, a recently discovered stellar system located 13° from the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) center. The deep color–magnitude diagram (CMD) reveals a well-defined main sequence (MS) and a handful of stars in the post-MS evolutionary phases. We analyze the YMCA-1 CMD by means of the automated isochrone-matching package ASteCA and model its radial density profile with a Plummer function. We find that YMCA-1 is an old ( 11.7 − 1.3 + 1.7 Gyr), metal-intermediate ([Fe/H] ≃ − 1.12 − 0.13 + 0.21 dex), compact (r h = 3.5 ± 0.5 pc), low-mass (M = 102.45±0.02 M ⊙), and low-luminosity (M V = −0.47 ± 0.57 mag) stellar system. The estimated distance modulus ( μ 0 = 18.72 − 0.17 + 0.15 mag), corresponding to about 55 kpc, suggests that YMCA-1 is associated with the LMC, but we cannot discard the scenario in which it is a Milky Way satellite. The structural parameters of YMCA-1 are remarkably different compared with those of the 15 known old LMC globular clusters. In particular, it resides in a transition region of the M V –r h plane, in between the ultrafaint dwarf galaxies and the classical old clusters, and close to SMASH-1, another faint stellar system recently discovered in the LMC surroundings.

We present the largest and most spatially extended planetary nebulae (PNe) catalog ever obtained for the Fornax cluster. We measured velocities of 1452 PNe out to 200 kpc in the cluster core using a counter-dispersed slitless spectroscopic technique with data from FORS2 on the VLT. With such extended spatial coverage, we can study separately the stellar halos of some of the cluster main galaxies and the intracluster light. In this second paper of the Fornax Cluster VLT Spectroscopic Survey (FVSS), we identify and classify the emission-line sources, describe the method to select PNe and calculate their coordinates and velocities from the dispersed slitless images. From the PN 2D velocity map we identify stellar streams that are possibly tracing the gravitational interaction of NGC1399 with NGC1404 and NGC1387. We also present the velocity dispersion profile out to $\sim 200$ kpc radii, which shows signatures of a superposition of the bright central galaxy and the cluster potential, with the latter clearly dominating the regions outside R $\sim 1000$" ($\sim 100$ kpc)., 13 pages, 8 figures, Accepted for publication in MNRAS, companion paper FVSS-I (Pota et al, 2018, submitted)

As part of the Fornax Deep Survey with the ESO VLT Survey Telescope, we present new $g$ and $r$ bands mosaics of the SW group of the Fornax cluster. It covers an area of $3 \times 2$ square degrees around the central galaxy NGC1316. The deep photometry, the high spatial resolution of OmegaCam and the large covered area allow us to study the galaxy structure, to trace stellar halo formation and look at the galaxy environment. We map the surface brightness profile out to 33arcmin ($\sim 200$kpc $\sim15R_e$) from the galaxy centre, down to $\mu_g \sim 31$ mag arcsec$^{-2}$ and $\mu_r \sim 29$ mag arcsec$^{-2}$. This allow us to estimate the scales of the main components dominating the light distribution, which are the central spheroid, inside 5.5 arcmin ($\sim33$ kpc), and the outer stellar envelope. Data analysis suggests that we are catching in act the second phase of the mass assembly in this galaxy, since the accretion of smaller satellites is going on in both components. The outer envelope of NGC1316 still hosts the remnants of the accreted satellite galaxies that are forming the stellar halo. We discuss the possible formation scenarios for NGC1316, by comparing the observed properties (morphology, colors, gas content, kinematics and dynamics) with predictions from cosmological simulations of galaxy formation. We find that {\it i)} the central spheroid could result from at least one merging event, it could be a pre-existing early-type disk galaxy with a lower mass companion, and {\it ii)} the stellar envelope comes from the gradual accretion of small satellites., Comment: Accepeted for publication in ApJ

We report the discovery of a complex extended density enhancement in the Globular Clusters (GCs) in the central $\sim 0.5(^{\circ})^2$ ($\sim 0.06$ Mpc$^2$) of the Fornax cluster, corresponding to $\sim 50\%$ of the area within 1 core radius. This overdensity connects the GC system of NGC1399 to most of those of neighboring galaxies within $\sim 0.6^{\circ}$ ($\sim 210$ kpc) along the W-E direction. The asymmetric density structure suggests that the galaxies in the core of the Fornax cluster experienced a lively history of interactions that have left a clear imprint on the spatial distribution of GCs. The extended central dominant structure is more prominent in the distribution of blue GCs, while red GCs show density enhancements that are more centrally concentrated on the host galaxies. We propose that the relatively small-scale density structures in the red GCs are caused by galaxy-galaxy interactions, while the extensive spatial distribution of blue GCs is due to stripping of GCs from the halos of core massive galaxies by the Fornax gravitational potential. A description of the chemical history of the polar ring in NGC4650A

We used high resolution spectra in the optical and near-infrared wavelength range to study the abundance ratios and metallicities of the HII regions associated with the polar disk in NGC4650A, in order to put constraints on the formation of the polar disk through cold gas accretion along a filament; this might be the most realistic way by which galaxies get their gas. We have compared the measured metallicities for the polar structure in NGC4650A with those of different morphological types and we have found that they are similar to those of late-type galaxies: such results is consistent with a polar disk formed by accretion from cosmic web filaments of external cold gas., Comment: Proceeding of the conference "Hunting for the Dark: The Hidden Side of Galaxy Formation", Malta, 19-23 Oct. 2009

Detailed studies of the photometric and kinematical properties of compact groups of galaxies are crucial to understand the physics of galaxy interactions and to shed light on some aspects of galaxy formation and evolution. In this paper we present a kinematical and photometrical study of a member, NGC4778, of the nearest (z=0.0137) compact group: Hickson 62. Aims: The aim of this work was to investigate the existence of kinematical anomalies in the brightest group member, NGC4778 in order to constrain the dynamical status and the formation history of the group. Methods: We used long-slit spectra obtained with FORS1 at VLT, to measure line-of-sight velocity distributions by means of the Fourier Correlation Quotient method, and to derive the galaxy rotation curve and velocity dispersion profile. Results: Our analysis reveals that Hickson 62a, also known as NGC4778, is an S0 galaxy with kinematical and morphological peculiarities, both in its central regions (r < 5'') and in the outer halo. In the central regions, the rotation curve shows the existence of a kinematically decoupled stellar component, offset with respect to the photometric center. In the outer halo we find an asymmetric rotation curve and a velocity dispersion profile showing a rise on the SW side, in direction of the galaxy NGC4776. Conclusions: The nuclear counterrotation, the distorted kinematics in the outer halo and the X-ray properties of the group suggest that NGC4778 may be the product of a recent minor merger, more reliable with a small late-type galaxy., 18 pages, 8 figures, accepted for pubblication in Astronomy and Astrophysics

We present a study of globular clusters (GCs) and other small stellar systems (SSSs) in the field of NGC 3115, observed as part of the ongoing wide-field imaging survey VEGAS, carried out with the 2.6 m VST telescope. We used deep g and i observations of NGC 3115, a well-studied lenticular galaxy that is covered excellently well in the scientific literature. This is fundamental to test the methodologies, verify the results, and probe the capabilities of the VEGAS-SSS. Leveraging the large field of view of the VST allowed us to accurately study the distribution and properties of SSSs as a function of galactocentric distance, well beyond ~20 galaxy effective radii, in a way that is rarely possible. Our analysis of colors, magnitudes, and sizes of SSS candidates confirms the results from existing studies, some of which were carried out with 8-10 m class telescopes, and further extends them to previously unreached galactocentric distances with similar accuracy. In particular, we find a color bimodality for the GC population and a de Vaucouleurs r1/4 profile for the surface density of GCs similar to the galaxy light profile. The radial color gradient of blue and red GCs previously found, for instance, by the SLUGGS survey with Subaru and Keck data, is further extended out to the largest galactocentric radii inspected, ~65 kpc. In addition, the surface density profiles of blue and red GCs taken separately are well approximated by a r1/4 density profile, with the fraction of blue GCs being slightly larger at larger radii. We do not find hints of a trend for the red GC subpopulation and for the GC turnover magnitude to vary with radius, but we observe a ~0.2 mag difference in the turnover magnitude of the blue and red GC subpopulations. Finally, from inspecting SSS sizes and colors, we obtain a list of ultracompact dwarf galaxies and GC candidates suitable for future spectroscopic follow-up. In conclusion, our study shows i) the reliability of the methodologies developed to study SSSs in the field of bright early-type galaxies; and ii) the great potential of the VEGAS survey to produce original results on SSSs science, mainly thanks to the wide-field imaging adopted. The VEGAS-SSS programme is devoted to studying the properties of small stellar systems (SSSs) in and around bright galaxies, built on the VLT Survey Telescope early-type galaxy survey (VEGAS), an ongoing guaranteed time imaging survey distributed over many semesters (Principal Investigator: Capaccioli). On completion, the VEGAS survey will have collected detailed photometric information of ~ 100 bright early-type galaxies to study the properties of diffuse light (surface brightness, colours, surface brightness fluctuations, etc.) and the distribution of clustered light (compact ''small'' stellar systems) out to previously unreached projected galactocentric radii. VEGAS-SSS will define an accurate and homogeneous dataset that will have an important legacy value for studies of the evolution and transformation processes taking place in galaxies through the fossil information provided by SSSs.

In this paper we present a detailed study of the peculiar early-type galaxy NGC1947. The main goal of this work is to constrain the dynamical status and the formation history of NGC1947 by comparing the observed properties with the predictions derived from different galaxy formation scenarios. To this aim, we derived the photometric and kinematical properties of NGC1947. Due to the presence of an extended dust-lane, which crosses the galaxy center along the photometric minor axis, we used near-infrared images (J and K bands) to derive an accurate analysis of the stellar light distribution. Optical images (in the V and R bands) are used to derive the color profiles and color maps to study the structure of the dust-lane. The observed kinematics confirm the presence of two components with decoupled angular momentum: gas and dust rotate along the minor axis, while the rotation velocities of the stars are observed along the major axis. The complex structure observed in NGC1947 support the hypothesis that some kind of interactions happened in the evolution of this object. We analyzed two alternatives: a merging process and an accretion event.
