Abstract: The High-Energy Particle Detector (HEPD-01) on board the China Seismo-Electromagnetic Satellite, located on a Sun-synchronous orbit at 500 km of altitude with an inclination of 97°, features a dedicated logic counting low-energy event rates, which proved sensitive to intense Gamma-Ray Burst (GRB). The present work reports a comprehensive analysis of signals induced by GRBs in the event-rate data collected between 2018 August and 2022 June. After accurately modeling the background rate as observed in different passages of the satellite over the same geographical area, we detected significant deviations to be compared with observations of GRB candidates from other observatories. The analysis revealed 12 statistically significant excesses, that have been associated with GRB 181222B, GRB 190114C, GRB 190129B, GRB 190305A, GRB 190928A, GRB 200412B, GRB 200422A, GRB 200826B, GRB 201009A, GRB 210702A, GRB 211211A, and GRB 220624A. We report light curves for 0.3–50 MeV photons, comparing them with findings from other space telescopes. The catalog of observations is published, complete of GRB observation time, duration, integrated counts, and fluence.

Abstract: The intricate behavior of particle acceleration and transport mechanisms complicates the overall efforts in formulating a comprehensive understanding of solar energetic particle (SEP) events; these efforts include observations of low-energy particles (from tens of keV to hundreds of MeV) by space-borne instruments and measurements by the ground-based neutron monitors of the secondary particles generated in the Earth atmosphere by SEPs in the GeV range. Numerous space-borne missions provided good data on the nature/characteristics of these solar particles in past solar cycles, but more recently—concurrently with the rise toward the maximum of solar cycle 25—the High-Energy Particle Detector (HEPD-01) proved to be well suited for the study of solar physics and space weather. Its nominal 30–300 MeV energy range for protons can enlarge the detection capabilities of solar particles at low Earth orbit, closer to the injection limit of many SEP events. In this work, we characterize three SEP events within the first six months of 2022 through spectral and velocity dispersion analysis, assessing the response of HEPD-01 to >M1 events.

Abstract: Time-dependent energy spectra of galactic cosmic rays (GCRs) carry crucial information regarding their origin and propagation throughout the interstellar environment. When observed at the Earth, after traversing the interplanetary medium, such spectra are heavily affected by the solar wind and the embedded solar magnetic field permeating the inner sectors of the heliosphere. The activity of the Sun changes significantly over an 11 yr solar cycle—and so does the effect on cosmic particles; this translates into a phenomenon called solar modulation. Moreover, GCR spectra during different epochs of solar activity provide invaluable information for a complete understanding of the plethora of mechanisms taking place in various layers of the Sun’s atmosphere and how they evolve over time. The High-Energy Particle Detector (HEPD-01) has been continuously collecting data since 2018 August, during the quiet phase between solar cycles 24 and 25; the activity of the Sun is slowly but steadily rising and is expected to peak around 2025/2026. In this paper, we present the first spectra for ∼50–250 MeV galactic protons measured by the HEPD-01 instrument—placed on board the CSES-01 satellite—from 2018 August to 2022 March over a one-Carrington-rotation time basis. Such data are compared to the ones from other spaceborne experiments, present (e.g., EPHIN, Parker Solar Probe) and past (PAMELA), and to a state-of-the-art three-dimensional model describing the GCRs propagation through the heliosphere.

Abstract: High-energy, long gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) can be generated by the core collapse of massive stars at the end of their lives. When they happen in the close-by universe they can be exceptionally bright, as seen from the Earth in the case of the recent, giant, long-lasting GRB221009A. GRB221009A was produced by a collapsing star with a redshift of 0.152: this event was observed by many gamma-ray space experiments, which also detected an extraordinary long gamma-ray afterglow. The exceptionally large fluence of the prompt emission of about 0.013 erg cm ^−2 illuminated a large geographical region centered on India and including Europe and Asia. We report in this paper the observation of sudden electron flux changes correlated with GRB221009A and measured by the HEPP-L charged particle detector on board the China Seismo-Electromagnetic Satellite, which was orbiting over Europe at the time of the GRB event. The time structure of the observed electron flux closely matches the very distinctive time dependence of the photon flux associated with the main part of the emission at around 13:20 UTC on 2022 October 9. To test the origin of these signals, we set up a simplified simulation of one HEPP-L subdetector: the results of this analysis suggest that the signals observed are mostly due to electrons created within the aluminum collimator surrounding the silicon detector, providing real-time monitoring of the very intense photon fluxes. We discuss the implications of this observation for existing and forthcoming particle detectors on low Earth orbits.

Abstract: In this paper we report the detection of five strong gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) by the High-Energy Particle Detector (HEPD-01) mounted on board the China Seismo-Electromagnetic Satellite, operational since 2018 on a Sun-synchronous polar orbit at a ∼507 km altitude and 97° inclination. HEPD-01 was designed to detect high-energy electrons in the energy range 3–100 MeV, protons in the range 30–300 MeV, and light nuclei in the range 30–300 MeV n ^−1 . Nonetheless, Monte Carlo simulations have shown HEPD-01 is sensitive to gamma-ray photons in the energy range 300 keV–50 MeV, even if with a moderate effective area above ∼5 MeV. A dedicated time correlation analysis between GRBs reported in literature and signals from a set of HEPD-01 trigger configuration masks has confirmed the anticipated detector sensitivity to high-energy photons. A comparison between the simultaneous time profiles of HEPD-01 electron fluxes and photons from GRB190114C, GRB190305A, GRB190928A, GRB200826B, and GRB211211A has shown a remarkable similarity, in spite of the different energy ranges. The high-energy response, with peak sensitivity at about 2 MeV, and moderate effective area of the detector in the actual flight configuration explain why these five GRBs, characterized by a fluence above ∼3 × 10 ^−5 erg cm ^−2 in the energy interval 300 keV–50 MeV, have been detected.

Abstract: GRB 221009A is a long gamma-ray burst among the most energetic and nearest ( z = 0.151) detected so far. The energy fluence of the burst was so large to cause ionization of the upper layers of Earth’s atmosphere and also observable signals in satellite-borne particle detectors. Electron signals, with the same GRB time development, can arise from the interaction of energetic photons with the particle detector and support structures. This effect was previously reported for the HEPP-L on board the China Seismo-Electromagnetic Satellite. We searched for the same effect on the particle detectors on board five POES and MetOp satellites. Electron signals in coincidence with the gamma-ray emission of the burst were found in three satellites, which were well illuminated by the GRB. The properties of the found electron signals are reported and discussed.

Abstract: This paper presents the project Comprehensive spAce wEather Studies for the ASPIS prototype Realization (CAESAR), which aims to tackle the relevant aspects of Space Weather (SWE) science and develop a prototype of the scientific data centre for Space Weather of the Italian Space Agency (ASI) called ASPIS (ASI SPace Weather InfraStructure). To this end, CAESAR involves the majority of the SWE Italian community, bringing together 10 Italian institutions as partners, and a total of 92 researchers. The CAESAR approach encompasses the whole chain of phenomena from the Sun to Earth up to planetary environments in a multidisciplinary, comprehensive, and unprecedented way. Detailed and integrated studies are being performed on a number of well-observed “target SWE events”, which exhibit noticeable SWE characteristics from several SWE perspectives. CAESAR investigations synergistically exploit a great variety of different products (datasets, codes, models), both long-standing and novel, that will be made available in the ASPIS prototype: this will consist of a relational database (DB), an interface, and a wiki-like documentation structure. The DB will be accessed through both a Web graphical interface and the ASPIS.py module, i.e., a library of functions in Python, which will be available for download and installation. The ASPIS prototype will unify multiple SWE resources through a flexible and adaptable architecture, and will integrate currently available international SWE assets to foster scientific studies and advance forecasting capabilities.

Abstract: We present a study of the east–west anisotropy of trapped-proton fluxes in low-Earth orbit based on the measurements of the Payload for Antimatter Matter Exploration and Light-nuclei Astrophysics(PAMELA)experiment. The differential intensities of eastward- and westward-traveling protons detected in the South Atlantic Anomaly region were estimated as a function of equatorial pitch angle and drift shell, for six energy bins between80 MeV and 2 GeV. We found that, as a consequence of the strong atmospheric gradient coupled with the large gyro radius in this energy range, the intensities of eastward fluxes exceed those of westward fluxes by a factor of∼10–20. However, the reported directional asymmetry also depends on the sign of the local flux gradient, resulting in more intense westward fluxes beyond the radial distances where the inner belt peaks. PAMELA observations can be used to improve the description of the near-Earth radiation environment at lowest altitudes and highest trapping energies, where current theoretical and empirical models are affected by the largest uncertainties. Introduction Low-altitude inner-belt protons are strongly influenced by the density distribution of Earth’s atmosphere, mostly through interactions with its neutral constituents, which induce significant flux anisotropies. In prim is, the atmospheric loss cone results in a steep pitch-angle distribution, which becomes narrower for lower drift shells. A further, azimuthal anisotropy originates from finite gyro radius effects at proton energies in excess of a few tens of MeV(Haerendel1962; Lenchek & Singer1962). In fact, for a given spacecraft position, protons with the same pitch angle but different gyro phase—the azimuth angle associated with the gyration motion—have their guiding centers on different drift shells. In particular, protons from the west and from the east gyrate around magnetic field lines located at higher and lower altitudes, respectively. The guiding-center separationΔhincreaseswith increasing energy, so that protons moving eastward will encounter progressively lower drift-averaged densities, thus experiencing less atmospheric absorption; the opposite situation will occur for protons traveling westward, resulting in an east–west asymmetry of flux intensities whenΔhbecomes comparable to or larger than the flux scale height(Garmire1963; Heckman &Nakano1963).The trapped-flux anisotropy is a relevant aspect of the modeling of the low Earth orbit(LEO)radiation environment, given the significant engineering implications, especially for The Astrophysical Journal,919:114(6pp), 2021 October 1https://doi.org/10.3847/1538-4357/ac1677© 2021. Abstract: Background Impairment of myocardial mechano–energetic efficiency (MEE) is present in virtually all patients with heart failure with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF). Cardiac contractility modulation (CCM) improves the quality of life and functional capacity, reduces hospitalizations, and induces biventricular reverse remodeling in patients with HFrEF. However, the effects of this innovative therapy on mechano–energetics efficiency and global longitudinal strain (GLS) are still unknown; therefore, the aim of this study is to evaluate whether CCM therapy can improve the MEE of patients with HFrEF. Methods We enrolled 25 patients with HFrEF who received an Optimizer Smart implant (the device that develops CCM therapy) between January 2018 and January 2021. Clinical and echocardiographic data were obtained from all patients 24 hours before and six months after CCM therapy. Results At six months, follow–up patients who underwent CCM therapy showed an increase of left ventricular ejection fraction (30.8+7.1 vs. 36.1+6.9%; p = 0.032) as well a rise of GLS 10.3+2.7 vs.–12.9+4.2; p = 0.018), of MME (32.2 + 10.1 vs. 38.6 + 7.6 mL/s; p = 0.013) and of MEE index (18.4 + 6.3 vs 24.3 + 6.7 mL/s/g; p = 0.022). Conclusions CCM therapy increased left ventricular performance, improving left ventricular ejection fraction, GLS, as well as MEE and MEEi.

14. Euthyroid goitre and sleep apnea

Abstract: A number of predisposing factors (obesity, nasal obstruction, adenoidal hypertrophy, macroglossia, etc) have been related to obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS). In addition hypothyroidism and large goitres have been reported to be associated to OSAS, but this association has not been adequately studied. We describe an obese patient with euthyroid goitre associated with OSAS. The patient showed a body mass index (BMI) of 47 and a large neck with a circumference of 60 cm. The flow-volume curve demonstrated an expiratory plateau suggesting an intrathoracic upper airway obstruction. Arterial blood gas analysis results were: pH 7.39; PCO2 54.2 mmHg; P O2 47 mmHg. Nocturnal polisomnography showed an apnea/hypopnea index (AHI) of 31 episodes/hour. Upper airway collapse was overcome by a nasal continuous positive airway pressure (nCPAP) of 14 cmH2O. Weight loss obtained by a hypocaloric diet was not accompanied by any OSAS improvement. After thyroidectomy, a nCPAP of 4 cmH2O was sufficient to prevent upper airway closure. Discontinuation of nCPAP treatment for 4 consecutive nights did not determine worsening of sleep apnea symptoms, nor a worsening of overnight oxymetry. A new polysomnography carried out after 4 nights off nCPAP showed an AHI of 33 episodes/hour. OSAS should be suspected in patients with large goitres. Decisions regarding discontinuation of nCPAP treatment after thyroidectomy should be based on polisomnographic results.

Abstract: Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a group of neurodevelopmental conditions characterized by social interaction and communication deficits and restricted, repetitive interests and behaviors (1). It is very common for children with ASD to present with several comorbidities, including sleep disorders. During the Covid-19 pandemic, children with ASD have been particularly at risk of adverse effects because of their difficulties in adapting to changes in daily habits and routines.Therefore, the aim of our study was to investigate sleep habits during the Covid-19 pandemic by administering the Child Sleep Habits Questionnaire (CSHQ) to parents.Twenty-five children of 28 (89.3%) had a score above 41 during the pandemic. Of these, 11 children also had clinically signifi-cant scores before the pandemic.Our data confirm that sleep disturbances have been very common in autistic children during the Covid-19 pandemic and suggest new considerations. In particular, in our clinical sample, sleep habits seemed to improve or not change significantly during the Covid-19 pandemic in a population with a high prevalence of cli-nically significant sleep disturbances. These data confirm that in this particular context, a supportive environment (family, parent training, tele-rehabilitation) is very important for autistic people and a predicta-ble routine can help prevent stress, anxiety, and behavioral problems.

Abstract: Time-dependent energy spectra of galactic cosmic rays (GCRs) carry fundamental information regarding their origin and propagation. When observed at the Earth, these spectra are significantly affected by the solar wind and the embedded solar magnetic field that permeates the heliosphere, changing significantly over an 11-year solar cycle. Energy spectra of GCRs measured during different epochs of solar activity provide crucial information for a thorough understanding of solar and heliospheric phenomena. The PAMELA experiment had collected data for almost ten years (15th June 2006 - 23rd January 2016), including the minimum phase of solar cycle 23 and the maximum phase of solar cycle 24. In this paper, we present new spectra for helium nuclei measured by the PAMELA instrument from January 2010 to September 2014 over a three Carrington rotation time basis. These data are compared to the PAMELA spectra measured during the previous solar minimum providing a picture of the time dependence of the helium nuclei fluxes over a nearly full solar cycle. Time and rigidity dependencies are observed in the proton-to-helium flux ratios. The force-field approximation of the solar modulation was used to relate these dependencies to the shapes of the local interstellar proton and helium-nuclei spectra., 9 pages, 5 figures

Abstract: We present a study of the solar-cycle variations of >80 MeV proton flux intensities in the lower edge of the inner radiation belt, based on the measurements of the Payload for Antimatter Matter Exploration and Light-nuclei Astrophysics (PAMELA) mission. The analyzed data sample covers an ~8 year interval from 2006 July to 2014 September, thus spanning from the decaying phase of the 23rd solar cycle to the maximum of the 24th cycle. We explored the intensity temporal variations as a function of drift shell and proton energy, also providing an explicit investigation of the solar-modulation effects at different equatorial pitch angles. Abstract: Objective To describe a non-invasive method for prospectively localizing Spinal Dural AV Fistulas (SDAVF) with contrast enhanced magnetic resonance imaging prior to spinal angiography and treatment,by combining Time Resolved Contrast Enhanced MR Angiography (TRCE-MRA) with Volumetric High Resolution T2-weighted Imaging (VHR-T2-I) sequences. Background The gold standard for the localization of SDAVF is spinal angiography. A complete spinalangiogram involves the sampling of all segmental arteries, which can be time consuming and carries therisks of contrast nephropathy and radiation exposure. A non-invasive method of prospectively localizing the SDAVF feeding segmental arteries would be highly beneficial, as it would allow focusing the spinalangiogram to only a few vessels, decreasing procedure time and mitigating these risks. TRCE-MRA has been utilized in the localization of SDAVFs in the past. This method, however, has been limited by the inherent tradeoff that exists between temporal and spatial resolution in MR imaging. Even on advanced3 Tesla systems, TRCE-MRA of the spine at frame rates higher than 1 per 2 seconds have poor signal tonoise and anatomical detail, making the identification of the small SDAVF feeding vessels a challenge.VHR-T2-I sequences have very high anatomical detail but cannot assess vessel flow. In this case series,we present a method that co-registers the temporal information from TRCE-MRA and the spatial information from VHR-T2-I to prospectively identify the feeding vessels of SDAVFs with a very high accuracy. Methods Five consecutive patients with clinical and imaging findings consistent with SDAVF underwent 3 Tesla CE-MRA on a Siemens MAGNETOM Skyra system prior to spinal angiography. For each patient, Siemens Time-resolved angiography With Stochastic Trajectories (TWIST) sequences at frame rates of 1 per 2 seconds or higher were obtained. A single slab 3D single slab turbo spin echo (SPACE) sequence was then obtained and the sequences were co-registered. The images were reviewed by aneuroradiologist and the feeding segmental artery to the SDAVF was identified. Subsequently, each patient underwent spinal angiography. In all patients the segmental artery feeding the SDAVF was correctly prospectively identified by the CE-MRA. Results In all patients in this case series, CE-MRA with TWIST/SPACE co-registration prospectively identified the SDAVF feeding artery. This resulted in a reduction in procedure time, contrast dose and radiation exposure. No procedure complications were encountered. In one patient with advanced atherosclerotic disease, the CE-MRA was critical in identifying the SDAVF feeding artery, as severe stenosis at the origin of the feeding artery made catheterization difficult and the vessel might have beenmissed if not for the prospective information from the CE-MRA. Conclusion This case series illustrates how combining TRCE-MRA and VHR-T2-I can prospectively identify the feeding segmental branches of SDAVFs, resulting in reduced procedure time and risks ofpre-treatment spinal angiography. Abstract: The internalization kinetics and intracellular spatial distribution of functionalized diatomite nanoparticles in human lung epidermoid carcinoma cell line have been investigated by confocal fluorescence and Raman microscopy. In this context, Raman imaging due to its non‐destructive, chemically selective and label‐free working principle provides evidence that the nanovectors are internalized and co‐localize with lipid environments, suggesting an endocytic internalisation route. Abstract: Little is known about the origin of the high-energy and sustained emission from solar Long-Duration Gamma-Ray Flares (LDGRFs), identified with the Compton Gamma Ray Observatory (CGRO), the Solar Maximum Mission (SMM), and now Fermi. Though Fermi/Large Area Space Telescope (LAT) has identified dozens of flares with LDGRF signature, the nature of this phenomenon has been a challenge to explain both due to the extreme energies and long durations. The highest-energy emission has generally been attributed to pion production from the interaction of >300 MeV protons with the ambient matter. The extended duration suggests that particle acceleration occurs over large volumes extending high in the corona, either from stochastic acceleration within large coronal loops or from back precipitation from coronal mass ejection driven shocks. It is possible to test these models by making direct comparison between the properties of the accelerated ion population producing the gamma-ray emission derived from the Fermi/LAT observations, and the characteristics of solar energetic particles (SEPs) measured by the Payload for Matter-Antimatter Exploration and Light Nuclei Astrophysics (PAMELA) spacecraft in the energy range corresponding to the pion-related emission detected with Fermi. For fourteen of these events we compare the two populations -- SEPs in space and the interacting particles at the Sun -- and discuss the implications in terms of potential sources. Our analysis shows that the two proton numbers are poorly correlated, with their ratio spanning more than five orders of magnitude, suggesting that the back precipitation of shock-acceleration particles is unlikely the source of the LDGRF emission., Accepted for publication in ApJ

Abstract: Aponta alguns aspectos relacionados ao processo de construção coletiva de indicadores educacionais por professores das séries iniciais. Os dados foram obtidos por meio da realização de uma experiência de ensino e aprendizagem junto a um grupo de professores de uma escola da rede pública do Estado de São Paulo. Como referência para a discussão realizada, os indicadores construídos para os diferentes componentes curriculares por professoras de 4ª série do Ensino Fundamental são apresentados. Foi possível evidenciar a potencialidade dos processos de construção de indicadores educacionais, tanto no que se refere à definição de um quadro de referências sobre os conteúdos instrucionais que podem ser desenvolvidos em salas de aula, de uma ferramenta para o monitoramento do ensino promovido e das bases para a progressão continuada, conforme objetivado por aquela comunidade escolar. Foram ainda objetivados subsídios importantes para promoção do desenvolvimento profissional das professoras e para a construção do projeto pedagógico da escola investigada. To enrich the discussion, we now present the constructed indicators for the different curricular components considering the 4th grade of primary education. It was possible to evidence the potentiality of the educational indicators construction processes for the definition of a framework to specify the curricular contents that can be taught in classrooms, of a tool to monitor pupils’ learning (Porter and Smithson, 2001) and the continued progression according to the school community. Important subsidies for the teachers’ professional development and for the construction of the school pedagogical project were also evidenced. Abstract: BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Dynamic susceptibility contrast MR perfusion imaging has limited results in children due to difficulties in reproducing technical standards derived from adults. This prospective, multicenter study aimed to determine DSC feasibility and quality in children using custom administration of a standard dose of gadolinium. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Eighty-three consecutive children with brain tumors underwent DSC perfusion with a standard dose of gadobutrol administered by an automated power injector. The location and size of intravenous catheters and gadobutrol volume and flow rates were reported, and local and/or systemic adverse effects were recorded. DSC was qualitatively evaluated by CBV maps and signal intensity–time curves and quantitatively by the percentage of signal drop and full width at half-maximum, and the data were compared with the standards reported for adults. Quantitative data were grouped by flow rate, and differences among groups were assessed by analysis of covariance and tested for statistical significance with a t test. RESULTS: No local or systemic adverse events were recorded independent of catheter location (63 arm, 14 hand, 6 foot), size (24–18 ga), and flow rates (1–5 mL/s). High-quality CBV maps and signal intensity–time curves were achieved in all patients, and quantitative evaluations were equal or superior to those reported for adults. No significant differences ( P ≥ .05) were identified among the higher-flow-rate groups in the quantitative data. CONCLUSIONS: A custom administration of a standard dose of gadobutrol allows safe and high-quality DSC MR perfusion imaging in children.

Abstract: The JEM-EUSO (Joint Experiment Missions for the Extreme Universe Space Observatory) program aims at developing Ultra-Violet (UV) fluorescence telescopes for efficient detections of Extensive Air Showers (EASs) induced by Ultra-High Energy Cosmic Rays (UHECRs) from satellite orbit. In order to demonstrate key technologies for JEM-EUSO, we constructed the EUSO-Balloon instrument that consists of a ∼1 m 2 refractive telescope with two Fresnel lenses and an array of multi-anode photo-multiplier tubes at the focus. Distinguishing it from the former balloon-borne experiments, EUSO-Balloon has the capabilities of single photon counting with a gate time of 2.3 µs and of imaging with a total of 2304 pixels. As a pathfinder mission, the instrument was launched for an 8 h stratospheric flight on a moonless night in August 2014 over Timmins, Canada. In this work, we analyze the count rates over ∼2.5 h intervals. The measurements are of diffuse light, e.g. of airglow emission, back-scattered from the Earth's atmosphere as well as artificial light sources. Count rates from such diffuse light are a background for EAS detections in future missions and relevant factor for the analysis of EAS events. We also obtain the geographical distribution of the count rates over a ∼780 km 2 area along the balloon trajectory. In developed areas, light sources such as the airport, mines, and factories are clearly identified. This demonstrates the correct location of signals that will be required for the EAS analysis in future missions. Although a precise determination of count rates is relevant for the existing instruments, the absolute intensity of diffuse light is deduced for the limited conditions by assuming spectra models and considering simulations of the instrument response. Abstract: EUSO-Balloon is a pathfinder mission for the Extreme Universe Space Observatory onboard the Japanese Experiment Module (JEM-EUSO). It was launched on the moonless night of the 25th of August 2014 from Timmins, Canada. The flight ended successfully after maintaining the target altitude of 38 km for five hours. One part of the mission was a 2.5 hour underflight using a helicopter equipped with three UV light sources (LED, xenon flasher and laser) to perform an inflight calibration and examine the detectors capability to measure tracks moving at the speed of light. We describe the helicopter laser system and details of the underflight as well as how the laser tracks were recorded and found in the data. These are the first recorded laser tracks measured from a fluorescence detector looking down on the atmosphere. Abstract: Despite the significant progress achieved in recent years, the physical mechanisms underlying the origin of solar energetic particles (SEPs) are still a matter of debate. The complex nature of both particle acceleration and transport poses challenges to developing a universal picture of SEP events that encompasses both the low-energy (from tens of keV to a few hundreds of MeV) observations made by space-based instruments and the GeV particles detected by the worldwide network of neutron monitors in ground-level enhancements (GLEs). The high-precision data collected by the Payload for Antimatter Matter Exploration and Light-nuclei Astrophysics (PAMELA) satellite experiment offer a unique opportunity to study the SEP fluxes between $\sim$80 MeV and a few GeV, significantly improving the characterization of the most energetic events. In particular, PAMELA can measure for the first time with good accuracy the spectral features at moderate and high energies, providing important constraints for current SEP models. In addition, the PAMELA observations allow the relationship between low and high-energy particles to be investigated, enabling a clearer view of the SEP origin. No qualitative distinction between the spectral shapes of GLE, sub-GLE and non-GLE events is observed, suggesting that GLEs are not a separate class, but are the subset of a continuous distribution of SEP events that are more intense at high energies. While the spectral forms found are to be consistent with diffusive shock acceleration theory, which predicts spectral rollovers at high energies that are attributed to particles escaping the shock region during acceleration, further work is required to explore the relative influences of acceleration and transport processes on SEP spectra., Comment: 26 pages, 13 figures, 2 tables

Raman images are compared with confocal fluorescence microscopy results. The Raman analysis provides that the siRNA-DNPs are internalized and co-localized in lipid vesicles within 18 h, after that equilibrium is achieved.

Abstract: EUSO-TA is a ground-based telescope, installed at the Telescope Array (TA) site in Black Rock Mesa, Utah, USA. This is the first detector to successfully use a Fresnel lens based optical system and multi-anode photomultipliers (64 channels per tube, 2304 channels encompassing a 10.6° × 10.6° field of view) for detection of Ultra High Energy Cosmic Rays (UHECR). The telescope is located in front of one of the fluorescence detectors of the TA experiment. Since its installation in 2013, the detector has observed several ultra-high energy cosmic ray events and, in addition, meteors. The limiting magnitude of 5.5 on summed frames (∼ 3 ms) has been established. Measurements of the UV night sky emission in different conditions and moon phases and positions have been completed. Abstract: The eukaryotic translation elongation factor 1A (eEF1A) is a moonlighting protein that besides to its canonical role in protein synthesis is also involved in many other cellular processes such as cell survival and apoptosis. In a previous work, we identified eEF1A Raf-mediated phosphorylation sites and defined their role in the regulation of eEF1A half-life and apoptosis of human cancer cells. We proposed that the phosphorylation of eEF1A by C-Raf required the presence of both eEF1A isoforms thus suggesting the formation of a potential eEF1A heterodimer owning regulatory properties. This study aimed at investigating the cellular localization and interaction between two eEF1A isoforms. To this end, we developed chimera proteins by adding at the N-terminal end of both eEF1A1 and eEF1A2 cyan fluorescence protein (mCerulean) and yellow fluorescence protein (mVenus), respectively. The fluorescent eEF1A1 and eEF1A2 chimeras were both addressed to COS-7 cells and found co-localized in the cytoplasm at the level of cellular membranes. We highlighted FRET between the labeled N-termini of eEF1A isoforms. The intramolecular FRET of this chimera was about 17%. Abstract: New results on the galactic cosmic ray (GCR) short-term intensity variation associated with Forbush decrease and co-rotating interaction regions (CIRs) measured by the PAMELA instrument between November 2006 and March 2007 are presented. Most of the past measurements on Forbush decrease events were carried out with neutron monitor detector. This tecnique allows only indirect detection of the overall GCR intensity over an integrated energy range. For the first time, thanks to the unique features of the PAMELA magnetic spectrometer, the Forbush decrease associated with the December 13th coronal mass ejection (CME) was studied in a wide rigidity range (0.4-20 GV) and for different species of GCRs detected directly in space. Using GCR protons, the amplitude and the recovery time of the Forbush decrease were studied for ten rigidity interval with a temporal resolution of one day. For comparison the helium and the electron intensity over time were also studied. The temporal evolution of the helium and proton intensity was found in good agreement while the electrons show, on average, a faster recovery time. Abstract: Complex and dynamic networks of molecules participate in the essential interactions between maternal organism, placenta and fetus in a healthy and successful pregnancy. Macrophage migratory inhibitory factor (MIF) is one of several molecules produced at implantation sites; MIF is mostly expressed by trophoblast cells. This has led to expectations of MIF's relevance as a partner in the maternal/fetal dialog. MIF is known by its biological interactions and functional roles as an activator of innate immunity, regulating subsequent adaptive responses, which include inhibition of migration of mononuclear cells in vitro, antagonism of glucocorticoids, and regulation of expression of Toll-like receptor 4. Beyond roles in the inflammatory response, MIF can interfere with proliferative activities in different cell types, as well as with cell death pathways. This intriguing factor found at the human, porcine, ovine, bovine and rodent maternal-fetal interfaces is present in a time- and spatially-dependent manner, indicating regulatory roles in the process of embryo implantation, placental development, maintenance of pregnancy and birth. Here, we will review MIF participation in placental physiology, including new evidence for a dialog with uterine cells, and a potential role in protection of uterine decidual cells.

Abstract: The PAMELA detector was launched on board of the Russian Resurs-DK1 satellite on June 15, 2006. Data collected during the first four years have been used to search for large-scale anisotropies in the arrival directions of cosmic-ray positrons. The PAMELA experiment allows for a full sky investigation, with sensitivity to global anisotropies in any angular window of the celestial sphere. Data samples of positrons in the rigidity range 10 GV $\leq$ R $\leq$ 200 GV were analyzed. This article discusses the method and the results of the search for possible local sources through analysis of anisotropy in positron data compared to the proton background. The resulting distributions of arrival directions are found to be isotropic. Starting from the angular power spectrum, a dipole anisotropy upper limit \delta = 0.166 at 95% C.L. is determined. Additional search is carried out around the Sun. No evidence of an excess correlated with that direction was found., Comment: The value of the dipole anisotropy upper limit has been changed. Abstract: Precision measurements of the electron component of cosmic radiation provide important information about the origin and propagation of cosmic rays in the Galaxy not accessible from the study of cosmic-ray nuclear components due to their differing diffusion and energy-loss processes. However, when measured near Earth, the effects of propagation and modulation of Galactic cosmic rays in the heliosphere, particularly significant for energies up to at least 30 GeV, must be properly taken into account. In this paper the electron ( e − ) spectra measured by the Payload for Antimatter Matter Exploration and Light-nuclei Astrophysics down to 70 MeV from 2006 July to 2009 December over six-month time intervals are presented. Fluxes are compared with a state-of-the-art three-dimensional model of solar modulation that reproduces the observations remarkably well.

Abstract: The nature of particle acceleration at the Sun, whether through flare reconnection processes or through shocks driven by coronal mass ejections (CMEs), is still under scrutiny despite decades of research. The measured properties of solar energetic particles (SEPs) have long been modeled in different particle-acceleration scenarios. The challenge has been to disentangle to the effects of transport from those of acceleration. The Payload for Antimatter Matter Exploration and Light-nuclei Astrophysics (PAMELA) instrument, enables unique observations of SEPs including composition and the angular distribution of the particles about the magnetic field, i.e. pitch angle distribution, over a broad energy range (>80 MeV) -- bridging a critical gap between space-based measurements and ground-based. We present high-energy SEP data from PAMELA acquired during the 2012 May 17 SEP event. These data exhibit differential anisotropies and thus transport features over the instrument rigidity range. SEP protons exhibit two distinct pitch angle distributions; a low-energy population that extends to 90�� and a population that is beamed at high energies (>1 GeV), consistent with neutron monitor measurements. To explain a low-energy SEP population that exhibits significant scattering or redistribution accompanied by a high-energy population that reaches the Earth relatively unaffected by dispersive transport effects, we postulate that the scattering or redistribution takes place locally. We believe these are the first comprehensive measurements of the effects of solar energetic particle transport in the Earth's magnetosheath., 21 pages, 4 figures. Abstract: In recent years, a large amount of evidence has given a central role to translational control in diseases such as cancer, tissue hypertrophy and neurodegeneration. Its deregulation can directly modulate cell cycling, transformation and survival response. The aim of this review is to describe the interaction between Raf activation and the main characters of the translational machinery, such as the elongation factor 1A (eEF1A), which has been recognized in recent years as one of the most interesting putative oncogenes. A particular emphasis is given to an intriguing non-canonical role that eEF1A can play in the relationship between the Ras→Raf-1→MEK1→ERK-1/2 and PI3K→Akt signaling pathways. Recently, our group has described a C-Raf kinase-mediated phosphorylation of eEF1A triggered by a survival pathway induced upon interferon alpha (IFNα) treatment in the human epidermoid cancer cell line (H1355). This phosphorylation seems to be the center of the survival pathway that counteracts the well-known pro-apoptotic function of IFNα. Furthermore, we have identified two new phosphorylation sites on eEF1A (Ser21 and Thr88) that are substrates for Raf kinases in vitro and, likely, in vivo as well. These residues seem to have a significant functional role in the control of cellular processes, such as cell proliferation and survival. In fact, overexpression of eEF1A2 in gemcitabine-treated cancer cells caused the upregulation of phosphoAkt and an increase in cell viability, thereby suggesting that eEF1A2 could exert its oncogenic behavior by participating in the regulation of PI3K pathway.

Abstract: Biosensing technology is an advancing field that benefits from the properties of biological processes combined to functional materials. Recently, biosensors have emerged as essential tools in biomedical applications, offering advantages over conventional clinical techniques for diagnosis and therapy. Optical biosensors provide fast, selective, direct, and cost-effective analyses allowing label-free and real-time tests. They have also shown exceptional potential for integration in lab-on-a-chip (LOC) devices. The major challenge in the biosensor field is to achieve a fully operative LOC platform that can be used in any place at any time. The choice of an appropriate strategy to immobilize the biological element on the sensor surface becomes the key factor to obtain an applicable analytical tool. In this chapter, after a brief description of the main biofunctionalization procedures on silicon devices, two silicon-based chips that present an (i) IgG antibody or (ii) an Id-peptide as molecular probe, directed against the B-cell receptor of lymphoma cancer cells, will be presented. From a comparison in detecting cells, the Id-peptide device was able to detect lymphoma cells also at low cell concentrations (8.5 × 10−3 cells/μm2) and in the presence of a large amount of non-specific cells. This recognition strategy could represent a proof-of-concept for an innovative tool for the targeting of patient-specific neoplastic B cells during the minimal residual disease; in addition, it represents an encouraging starting point for the construction of a lab-on-a-chip system for the specific recognition of neoplastic cells in biological fluids enabling the follow-up of the changes of cancer cells number in patients, highly demanded for therapy monitoring applications.

Abstract: Native diatoms made of amorphous silica are first converted into silicon structures via magnesiothermic process, preserving the original shape: electron force microscopy analysis performed on silicon-converted diatoms demonstrates their semiconductor behavior. Wet surface chemical treatments are then performed in order to enhance the photoluminescence emission from the resulting silicon diatoms and, at the same time, to allow the immobilization of biological probes, namely proteins and antibodies, via silanization. We demonstrate that light emission from semiconductive silicon diatoms can be used for antibody-antigen recognition, endorsing this material as optoelectronic transducer. Refereed/Peer-reviewed

Abstract: On the 15th of June 2006, the PAMELA satellite-borne experiment was launched from the Baikonur cosmodrome and it has been collecting data since July 2006. The apparatus comprises a time-of-flight system, a silicon-microstrip magnetic spectrometer, a silicon-tungsten electromagnetic calorimeter, an anti-coincidence system, a shower tail counter scintillator and a neutron detector. The scientific objectives addressed by the mission are the measurement of the antiprotons and positrons spectra in cosmic rays, the hunt for antinuclei as well as the determination of light nuclei fluxes from hydrogen to oxygen in a wide energy range and with very high statistics. In this paper the identification capability for light nuclei isotopes using two different detector systems (Time-of-Flight and multiple dE/dx measurements in the calorimeter) and preliminary results of the isotopic ratios will be presented.

Abstract: The link between eukaryotic translation elongation factor 1A (eEF1A) and signal transduction pathways through the regulatory mechanism of phosphorylation has never been considered. In this review, we focus on the different kinases that recognize the Ser and Thr residues of the eEF1A1 and eEF1A2 isoforms and regulate their involvement in different cellular processes like cell survival and apoptosis. In this context, polyamines seem to play a role in the regulation of the translation elongation process by modulating the Ser/Thr kinases involved in the phosphorylation of translation elongation factors.

A new personalized B-cell lymphoma therapy, based on a site-specific receptor-mediated drug delivery system, was developed in this study. Specifically, natural silica-based nanoparticles (diatomite) were modified to actively target the antiapoptotic factor B-cell lymphoma/leukemia 2 (Bcl2) with small interfering RNA (siRNA). An idiotype-specific peptide (Id-peptide) specifically recognized by the hypervariable region of surface immunoglobulin B-cell receptor was exploited as a homing device to ensure specific targeting of lymphoma cells. Specific nanoparticle uptake, driven by the Id-peptide, was evaluated by flow cytometry and confocal microscopy and was increased by approximately threefold in target cells compared with nonspecific myeloma cells and when a random control peptide was used instead of Id-peptide. The specific internalization efficiency was increased by fourfold when siRNA was also added to the modified nanoparticles. The modified diatomite particles were not cytotoxic and their effectiveness in downregulation of gene expression was explored using siRNA targeting Bcl2 and evaluated by quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction and Western blot analyses. The resulting gene silencing observed is of significant biological importance and opens new possibilities for the personalized treatment of lymphomas. Abstract: The interaction between tetracycline and the archaeal elongation factor 1α from Sulfolobus solfataricus was investigated. The effects produced by this eubacterial antibiotic indicated that this interaction involved the G-domain of the elongation factor 1α from S. solfataricus, although also the M-domain was required. In fact, in the presence of the antibiotic, an increase in the fluorescence quantum yield of the aromatic region was observed for elongation factor 1α from S. solfataricus and its truncated form lacking the C-terminal domain, but not for that lacking also the M-domain. The increase in quantum yield was restored when the G-domain of elongation factor 1α from S. solfataricus was fused to the M and the C-domains of the eubacterial analogue elongation factor Tu. Tetracycline inhibits protein synthesis catalysed by elongation factor 1α from S. solfataricus; this is accompanied by an increase in the GDP/GTP exchange rate and a slight inhibition of the intrinsic GTPase, suggesting that a main effect of the antibiotic was exerted on the GTP-bound form of the enzyme. Furthermore, the mixed inhibition observed for GTPase confirmed that the interaction, besides the G-domain, involved also other region(s) of elongation factor 1α from S. solfataricus. These results can be useful for studying potential side effects arising from the interaction between tetracycline and eukaryotic elongation factors.

Abstract: The cosmic-ray lithium and beryllium ($^{6}$Li, $^{7}$Li, $^{7}$Be, $^{9}$Be, $^{10}$Be) isotopic composition has been measured with the satellite-borne experiment PAMELA, which was launched into low-Earth orbit on-board the Resurs-DK1 satellite on June 15th 2006. The rare lithium and beryllium isotopes in cosmic rays are believed to originate mainly from the interaction of high energy carbon, nitrogen and oxygen nuclei with the interstellar medium (ISM), but also on "tertiary" interactions in the ISM (i.e. produced by further fragmentation of secondary beryllium and boron). In this paper the isotopic ratios $^{7}$Li/$^{6}$Li and $^{7}$Be/($^{9}$Be + $^{10}$Be) measured between 150 and 1100 MeV/n using two different detector systems from July 2006 to September 2014 will be presented., 13 pages, 11 figures, accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal. arXiv admin note: text overlap with arXiv:1512.06535

Abstract: Protons detected by the PAMELA experiment in the period 2006-2014 have been analyzed in the energy range between 0.40-50 GV to explore possible periodicities besides the well known solar undecennial modulation. An unexpected clear and regular feature has been found at rigidities below 15 GV, with a quasi-periodicity of $\sim$450 days. A possible Jovian origin of this periodicity has been investigated in different ways. The results seem to favor a small but not negligible contribution to cosmic rays from the Jovian magnetosphere, even if other explanations cannot be excluded., article 4 figures, 1 table

Abstract: In this paper, a new strategy for highly selective and sensitive direct detection of lymphoma cells by exploiting the interaction between a peptide and its B-cell receptor, has been evaluated. In particular, an idiotype peptide, able to specifically bind the B-cell receptor of A20 cells in mice engrafted with A20 lymphoma, has been used as molecular probe. The new detection technique has been demonstrated on a planar crystalline silicon chip. Coverage of 85% of silicon surface and detection efficiency of 8.5 × 10(-3) cells/μm(2) were obtained. The recognition strategy promises to extend its application in studying the interaction between ligands and their cell-surface receptors.

Abstract: Diatomite is a natural fossil material of sedimentary origin, composed by fragments of diatom siliceous skeletons. Due to its chemical inertness, thermal stability, high surface area, non-toxicity and biocompatibility, diatomite is considered an ideal material for the preparation of diatomite silica drug delivery nanocarriers. In this work, the properties of diatomite nanoparticles (DNPs) as potential system for drug delivery in cancer cells were exploited.
