Abstract

An extensive field and laboratory study is carried out to evaluate the concrete strength of existing building stock in Turkey. The concrete strength of each building was determined by core sampling and laboratory testing. Randomly selected components for core sampling were identified to meet with minimum requirements of standards or pre-standards for number of tests. A total of 1679 randomly selected core samples were extracted from 167 public buildings for laboratory testing. The average and coefficient of variation values of each building were obtained. The upper-bound value of the expected concrete strength is calculated as the mean less one standard deviation. It is observed that the expected concrete strength values are drastically lower than the specified ones. Also, the variability in concrete strength values is considerably high compared to the specified strength of buildings. Almost one-half of the investigated buildings have concrete strength values as low as that of the collapsed buildings during past earthquakes in Turkey. Considering that the current study validates low concrete strength in a significant number of existing buildings as observed in different buildings from various regions of Turkey during the earthquakes at Duzce and Kocaeli in 1999 and at Bingol in 2003, a considerable portion of existing building stock is at serious risk in the case of a seismic event.

Abstract

The computation of constant ductility (or isoductile) response spectra for single-degree-of-freedom systems can require numerous individual response history analyses. Recognising that the same ductility response may be obtained for different strength oscillators of a given period, greater computational effort is required to reduce the possibility that a desired solution is not overlooked. Even a single solution may not exist if a local discontinuity in the strength-ductility relationship coincides with the desired value of ductility. This paper describes a two-phase algorithm to identify the highest strength solution for which the corresponding ductility equals (or does not exceed) the desired ductility. The first phase adopts a "check-reject" approach to reject intervals of strength where the possibility of unidentified higher-strength solutions is considered to be remote, thereby narrowing the strength interval in which the solution will be found. The second phase identifies a solution within this interval as rapidly as possible using a bisection approach. The algorithm is implemented in the USEE software program. The efficiency and accuracy of the algorithm are demonstrated by comparison to results obtained with other software programs.

Abstract

Objective: Taxi drivers carry significant risks related to occupational health and safety. Exposure to second-hand tobacco smoke is known to be one of those health risks. As legislations for smoke-free taxis become more widespread throughout the world, this study aimed to assess knowledge and attitude of taxi drivers on the new legislation for tobacco control introduced in Turkey recently. Methodology: The study population consisted of 135 taxi drivers from 22 different taxi stations in Ankara Turkey. Data of the descriptive study was collected in October, 2008 through face-to-face interviews with a standart questionnaire. Descriptive statistics were used to summarize data, whereas chi-square was used to compare groups. Results: All the study participants were male with a mean age of 47.2±11.8 years. More than half of the taxi drivers (59.3%) were found to be current smokers. Although level of knowledge and attitude of taxi drivers on the new legislation were favorable in general, some difficulties and barriers were found to be present in implementation of the ban. Most of the smoking drivers were found to continue smoking in their taxis. About 80.0% of the drivers stated their concern of losing out on clients' satisfaction if they restrict smoking in their taxis. Conclusion: Taxi drivers and clients' knowledge, attitudes and behaviors are important determinants in successful implementation of legislations for smoke-free taxis. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

5. Comparison of intravaginal progesterone gel and intramuscular 17-α-hydroxyprogesterone caproate in luteal phase support.

Abstract

The main objective of this study was to compare the pregnancy rates of intramuscular (IM) 17-α-hydroxyprogesterone caproate (17-HPC) and intravaginal (IV) progesterone gel administration in in vitro fertilization-embryo transfer (IVF-ET) cycles. The IM 17-HPC and IV progesterone groups included 632 (66.4%) and 320 (33.6%) women undergoing the first cycles of IVF-ET treatment, respectively. Multivariate analyses annotated for all potential confounders showed that the use of IV progesterone retained a predictive value for the total β-human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) positivity and clinical pregnancy rates [adjusted odds ratio (OR), 1.97; 95% confidence interval (CI), 1.28-3.03; P=0.002; and OR, 1.66; 95% CI, 1.07-2.60; P=0.03, respectively]. However, biochemical and on-going pregnancy rates did not differ significantly between the groups (OR, 1.85; 95% CI, 1.00-3.41; P=0.05; and OR, 1.43, 95% CI, 0.89-2.30; P=0.14, respectively). Luteal phase support (LPS) with IV progesterone gel in comparison with IM 17-HPC appears to be associated with higher clinical pregnancy rates in IVF-ET cycles. However, this benefit is clinically irrelevant in terms of on-going pregnancy outcomes.
