Abstract

The NEMO collaboration proposes to build an underwater neutrino telescope located South-East off the Sicily coast. This paper describes the concepts underlying the communication link design going over the whole data acquisition and transport from the front-end electronics to the module sending data on-shore through a fiber optic link which relies on Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing. An on-shore board, plugged into a PC, extracts and distributes data both to first-level trigger and control systems. Underwater apparatus monitoring and controls are guaranteed by oceanographic instruments and dedicated sensors, whose data are packed and sent back to shore using the same optical link. The communication is fully bidirectional, allowing transmission of timing and control commands. The architecture described here provides a complete real-time data transport layer between the onshore laboratory and the underwater detector. During winter 2006 a first prototype of the apparatus has been deployed: calibration results from the currently working system are here reported.

Abstract

An electronic board, called floor control module (FCM), was developed for the NEMO project, an underwater neutrino telescope. The offshore FCM is in charge of providing interfaces toward instrumental control boards, collecting data from up to eight readout channels, packing and sending streams to the onshore laboratory through an optical fiber driven by a dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM) electro-optical transceiver. To obtain a common timing at each level of the apparatus, communication adopts the synchronous digital hierarchy (SDH) protocol, a standard telecommunication synchronous format which allows clock recovery from bitstream, thus simplifying the distribution network. The channel is fully bidirectional to allow underwater apparatus control. The same FCM, plugged into a PCI bus, can also be used onshore for data reception and transmission. This architecture provides a complete real-time data transport layer between the onshore laboratory and the underwater detector.

Abstract

none 104 The selection of the photomultiplier plays a crucial role in the R&D activity related to a large-scale underwater neutrino telescope. This paper illustrates the main procedures and facilities used to characterize the performances of 72 large area photomultipliers, Hamamatsu model R7081 sel. The voltage to achieve a gain of 5×107, dark count rate and single photoelectron time and charge properties of the overall response were measured with a properly attenuated 410 nm pulsed laser. A dedicated study of the spurious pulses was also performed. The results prove that the photomultipliers comply with the general requirements imposed by the project. Abstract

The NEMO Collaboration installed and operated an underwater detector including prototypes of the critical elements of a possible underwater km3 neutrino telescope: a four-floor tower (called Mini-Tower) and a Junction Box. The detector was developed to test some of the main systems of the km3 detector, including the data transmission, the power distribution, the timing calibration and the acoustic positioning systems as well as to verify the capabilities of a single tridimensional detection structure to reconstruct muon tracks. We present results of the analysis of the data collected with the NEMO Mini-Tower. The position of photomultiplier tubes (PMTs) is determined through the acoustic position system. Signals detected with PMTs are used to reconstruct the tracks of atmospheric muons. Abstract

A module was constructed for the measurement of deep sea optical activity at a sensitivity level of a single photoelectron. We describe the features of the module and a method for calibrating it. The average sensitivity in the interval from 350 to 500 nm is 0.89 Hz/(photons cm−2 s−1), where Hz is the rate detected by the module.

We describe the measurement of the deep sea optical background in some sites south of Capo Passero, Sicily. A continuous flux of about 440 photons cm -2 s -1 in the wavelength interval 440-550 nm is estimated due to the decays of the 40K contained in the sea water. Bioluminescence light bursts are also observed and an example of time evolution is reported. All the measurements were accomplished using a deep sea module also described in this article.

Abstract

An innovative Acoustic Positioning System for the km(3)-scale neutrino telescope has been designed and is under realization within the KM3NeT Consortium. Compared to the Acoustic Positioning Systems used for the km(3) demonstrators, ANTARES and NEMO Phase 1, this new system is based on the "all data to shore" concept and it will permit the enhancement of detector positioning performances, reduction of costs and its use as real-time monitor of environmental acoustic noise. Abstract

The status of the activities towards the realization of a km3 Cherenkov neutrino detector carried out by the NEMO Collaboration is described. The realization of a Phase-1 project, which is under way, will validate the proposed technologies for the realization of the km3 detector on a Test Site at 2000 m depth. The realization of a new infrastructure on the candidate site (Phase-2 project) will provide the possibility to test detector components at 3500 m depth.

Abstract

In this paper are presented the results of Monte Carlo simulations on the capability of the proposed NEMO-km$^3$ telescope to detect TeV muon neutrinos from Galactic microquasars. For each known microquasar we compute the number of detectable events, together with the atmospheric neutrino and muon background events. We also discuss the detector sensitivity to neutrino fluxes expected from known microquasars, optimizing the event selection also to reject the background; the number of events surviving the event selection are given. The best candidates are the steady microquasars SS433 and GX339-4 for which we estimate a sensitivity of about $5\cdot10^{-11}$ erg/cm$^2$ s; the predicted fluxes are expected to be well above this sensitivity. For bursting microquasars the most interesting candidates are Cygnus X-3, GRO J1655-40 and XTE J1118+480: their analyses are more complicated because of the stochastic nature of the bursts., 20 pages, 3 figures, accepted by Astroparticle Physics

Abstract

The timing calibration is a delicate operation to perform for assuring the full functionality of a large underwater neutrino telescope. In this paper we illustrate the main features of our system for timing calibration tailored to the needs of the prototype of the NEMO (NEutrino Mediterranean Observatory) apparatus. We point out that the approach proposed can be easily adapted to work in any underwater neutrino telescope.

Abstract

The NESTOR detector, at present under construction, is a telescope for high-energy neutrino astronomy. The apparatus, based on Cherenkov light detection, will be deployed in deep sea (about 4000 m) near the S.W. Greek coast. We briefly describe the NESTOR detector, then we describe with more details the electronics for NESTOR data acquisition and transmission. The detector signals are sampled at 200 MHz and all the resulting information are transmitted to the laboratory on 30 km long electro-optical cable. The estimated Mean Time Between Failure of the full electronics system is greater than 20 years. Tests performed on the first prototypes confirm the main characteristics of these electronics: the dynamic range allowed for the signals is bigger than 1000, the pulse shape is reconstructed with an 8 bit ADC accuracy and the resolution in the measurement of the signal “threshold crossing time” is better than 200 ps.

Abstract

The activities towards the realization of a km3 Cherenkov neutrino detector carried out by the NEMO Collaboration are described. Long-term exploration of a 3500 m deep-sea site close to the Sicilian coast has shown that it is optimal for the installation of the detector. The realization of a Phase-1 project, which is under way, will validate the proposed technologies for the realization of the km3 detector on a Test Site at 2000 m depth. The realization of a new infrastructure on the candidate site (Phase-2 project) will provide the possibility to test detector components at 3500 m depth.

Abstract

Activities leading to the realization of a km3 Cherenkov neutrino detector, carried out by the NEMO collaboration, are described. Long term exploration of a 3500 m deep site in the Mediterranean close to the Sicilian coast has shown that it is optimal for the installation of the detector. A complete feasibility study, which has considered all the components of the detector, as well as its deployment, has been carried out demonstrating that technological solutions exist for the realization of the km3 detector. The realization of a technological demonstrator (the NEMO Phase 1 project) is under way.

16. Digital Hydrophone Signal Acquisition and Analysis for KM3NET

Abstract

The KM3NeT project foresees the utilization of hydrophones for various purposes such as positioning calibration, oceanographic measurements and possibly neutrino detection. Hydrophones will be connected to the Control Logic Board (CLB) inside Optical Modules, were incoming data will be acquired, packed and sent to the On-Shore station. It is planned to use hydrophones with a digital output, encoded with the AES3 protocol with a sample rate of 192 kHz and an amplitude resolution of the signal of 24 bits. This output is directly provided by the digital hydrophone, or by a digitizer in case of an analog one. The present document will report the result of the interfacing of a digital hydrophone to the Kintex 7 FPGA describing hardware and firmware; in case of the utilization of an analog hydrophone for the final design, there will probably be modifications in the hardware, while the firmware part can be the same in both cases.

Abstract

In a deep-sea neutrino telescope it is mandatory to locate the position of the optical sensors with a precision of about 10 cm. To achieve this requirement, an innovative Acoustic Positioning System (APS) has been designed in the frame work of the KM3NeT neutrino telescope. The system will also be able to provide an acoustic guide during the deployment of the telescope's components and seafloor infrastructures (junction boxes, cables, etc.). A prototype of the system based on the successful acoustic systems of ANTARES and NEMO is being developed. It will consist of an array of hydrophones and a network of acoustic transceivers forming the Long Baseline. All sensors are connected to the telescope data acquisition system and are in phase and synchronised with the telescope master clock. Data from the acoustic sensors, continuously sampled at 192 kHz, will be sent to shore where signal recognition and analysis will be carried out. The design and first tests of the system elements will be presented. This new APS is expected to have better precision compared to the systems used in ANTARES and NEMO, and can also be used as a real-time monitor of acoustic sources and environmental noise in deep sea. Abstract

The experiment was performed to prove that exposure to a relatively weak extremely low frequency (ELF) magnetic field retards tadpoles' development.Two cohorts of Xenopus laevis laevis (Daudin) tadpoles were exposed during their immature period ( approximately 60 days) to a 50 Hz magnetic field of 63.9or = Bor = 76.4 microT rms (root mean square, average values) magnetic flux density in a solenoid. At the same time, as controls, two comparable cohorts were reared in two aquariums remote from the solenoid. Cohorts' degree of development was quantified by daily inspections of animal limbs and attributing them to a stage of the Nieuwkoop and Faber ( 1956 ) classification. The experiment was replicated three times.(a) Mean developmental rate of exposed cohorts was reduced with respect to controls (0.43 vs. 0.48 stages/day, p0.001) starting from early larval stages; (b) Exposure increased the mean metamorphosis period of tadpoles by 2.4 days compared with the controls (p0.001); (c) Maturation rates of exposed and control tadpoles changed during maturation period; and (d) Important mortality, malformations or teratogenic effects were not observed in exposed matured tadpoles.A long-term exposure of X. laevis tadpoles to a relatively weak 50 Hz magnetic field causes a sub-lethal effect that slows down their larval developmental rate and delays their metamorphosis.

Abstract

The NEMO.RD Project is a feasibility study of a km 3 underwater telescope for high energy astrophysical neutrinos to be located in the Mediterranea Sea. At present this study concerns: i) Monte Carlo simulation study of the capabilities of various arrays of phototubes in order to determine the detector geometry that can optimize performance and cost; ii) design of low power consumption electronic cards for data acquisition and transmission to shore; iii) feasibility study of mechanics, deployment, connection and maintenance of such a detector in collaboration with petrol industries having experience of undersea operations; iv) oceanographic exploration of various sites in search for the optimal one. A brief report on the status of points i) and iv) is presented here.

Abstract

The latest results and the activities towards the realization of a km 3 Cherenkov neutrino detector carried out by the NEMO Collaboration are described. The realization of a Phase-1 project has validated all relevant technologies proposed for the realization of the km 3 detector on a test site at 2000 m depth. The realization of a new infrastructure on the candidate Capo Passero site (for Phase-2 project) will provide the possibility to test detector components at 3500 m depth.

Abstract

A slow, large-amplitude, square-wave, modulation-detection scheme is proposed as a sensitive method of detection of broadband CW magnetic resonance signals of relatively small linewidth. The method exhibits the unique features of producing true resonance lineshapes and of monitoring the absolute resonance intensity at any scanning DC field value with improved signal-to-noise ratio. By the use of multichannel or multiplexing devices, a normalization of the resonance signal may be performed. The usefulness of the proposed method in routine and quantitative magnetic resonance measurements is discussed, and representative results of its application to the electron spin resonance detection of free radicals are presented.

Abstract

We discuss the feasibility of a telescope consisting in a sampling array for extensive air showers measure combined with a muon tracking device. The sampling array will extend over a surface of ≥ 10 7 m 2 while the muon tracking device will cover ≥ 10 4 m 2 . The telescope should be done with resistive plates counters and would become a very powerful device to study high energy neutrinos and gamma rays astronomy as well as cosmic ray physics up to the highest energy (≥ 10 19 eV ) region.

Abstract

The timing calibration is a delicate operation to perform for assuring the full functionality of a large underwater neutrino telescope. In this paper we illustrate the main features of our system for timing calibration tailored to the needs of the prototype of the NEMO (NEutrino Mediterranean Observatory) apparatus. We point out that the approach proposed can be easily adapted to work in any underwater neutrino telescope.

Abstract

The possibility of performing neutrino astronomy by means of a detector above the ground depends critically on the feasibility of a rejection power on the order of 10 11 required to discriminate the enormous background of cosmic downward going muons from the signal of upward going muons produced by neutrinos. In order to check whether and how this rejection is obtainable, we have built in the Physics Department of the University of Bari a horizontal cosmic muon telescope (MINI) instrumented with resistive plate counters. By performing time-of-flight measurements, we have estimated the rejection power of our telescope for left and right coming cosmic muons. The rejection dependence on a few fundamental parameters like minimum number of points per track, telescope length, RPC time resolution and on trigger configuration has been investigated.

Abstract

The temperature dependence of the proton spin-lattice relaxation times T1 and T1/g9 for polycrystalline (NH4)2RuCl6, (NH4)2PdCl6 and (NH4)2PtCl6, shows that the ammonium reorientation is the dominant relaxation mechanism. In these salts, as for other low-barrier ammonium salts, the activation energies are small, as suggested by considerations concerning the lattice structure and symmetry.

Abstract

A new EPR transmission spectrometer is described which exhibits some new interesting features with respect to conventional EPR spectroscopy. This spectrometer is capable of obtaining by a single bridge and a single scan all the resonance information contained in the spin sample under the form of four separate resonance modes, e.g., the two components of the spin-magnetization vector either in cartesian or polar coordinates. Its fixed-frequency f.eature also allows one to have a perfectly calibrated field scale and the system can perform multiple scan averaging of weak signals buried in the noise. This transmission system can also work under optimal conditions at both very high and very low microwave power with the same bridge and with high rejection of the source noise.

Abstract

The main features of a nuclear-electron double resonance spectrometer capable of pumping the ESR frequencies with 20 W of microwave power obtained by a TWT amplifier at X-band and ofmonitoring the ESR line at low power just before pumping are described. The microwave power is easily controlled and monitored and provision for modulating it is included. The two resonance frequencies are always locked together, whether the NMR frequency is changed by the frequency synthesizer for scanning the NMR spectrum, or for changing nuclei. The double resonance probe is of novel design and consists of a dielectric loaded cylindrical cavity whose external boundary is actually a brass ribbon wound to make an rf transmitter coil with homogeneous H 1 field. The use of a crossed coil system as NMR probe simplifies the change of frequency and the sweeping, and improves very much the stability of the system during pumping. The temperature control of the sample and receiver coil is made simple, thus adding extra stability and versatility to the system. Results are shown and improvements discussed.

Abstract

The kinetics of reconstitution of bovine superoxide dismutase from Cu2+ and the copper-free enzyme have been studied by activity, u.v.-absorption, electron-paramagnetic-resonance and pulsed-nuclear-magnetic-resonance measurements. The process appears to be first-order up to 80% completion in most conditions, and is pH-dependent, with an apparent pK of 6.5. U.v.-absorption and solvent proton relaxation rate measurements show that fast binding of Cu2+ occurs, and the initial ligands are likely to be, at least in part, those of the native active site. The recovery of the native activity and spectroscopic properties is a slow process with activation energies of 92 kJ/mol at pH 5.3 and 8.4kJ/mol at pH 8.1 and can be described as a rearrangement of the site around the bound metal. The rate of this process is lower in partially recombined protein samples, probably because of intersubunit interactions.

Abstract

In the last few years a great interest has been expressed for the construction of a Neutrino Astroparticle Physics Laboratory in the Mediterranean. The NESTOR collaboration made important progresses and plans soon to deploy in deep sea a detector with ∼ 104 m2 effective surface. This detector will be able not only to demonstrate the validity of the experimental approach but also to start data collection and then real Neutrino Astrophysics. The status of the preparation of the experiment and the future programs are described.

Abstract

[EN] Detection of high-energy neutrinos from distant astrophysical sources will open a new window on the Universe. The detection principle exploits the measurement of Cherenkov light emitted by charged particles resulting from neutrino interactions in the matter containing the telescope. A novel multi-PMT digital optical module (DOM) was developed to contain 31 3-inch photomultiplier tubes (PMTs). In order to maximize the detector sensitivity, each PMT will be surrounded by an expansion cone which collects photons that would otherwise miss the photocathode. Results for various angles of incidence with respect to the PMT surface indicate an increase in collection efficiency by 30% on average for angles up to 45 degrees with respect to the perpendicular. Ray-tracing calculations could reproduce the measurements, allowing to estimate an increase in the overall photocathode sensitivity, integrated over all angles of incidence, by 27% (for a single PMT). Abstract

A 13-inch Optical Module (OM) containing a large-area (10-inch) photomultiplier was designed as part of Phase-2 of the NEMO project. An intense R&D activity on the photomultipliers, the voltage supply boards, the optical coupling as well as the study of the influences of the Earth's magnetic field has driven the choice of each single component of the OM. Following a well-established production procedure, 32 OMs were assembled and their functionality tested. The design, the testing and the production phases are thoroughly described in this paper. © 2013 IOP Publishing Ltd and Sissa Medialab srl.

Abstract

The latest results and the activities towards the construction of a km 3 Cherenkov neutrino detector carried out by the NEMO Collaboration are described. Long-term exploration of a 3500 m deep-sea site close to the Sicilian coast has shown that it is optimal for the installation of the detector. The NEMO Phase-1 project has validated several technologies proposed for the construction of the km 3 detector on a test site at 2000 m depth. The new infrastructure on the candidate Capo Passero site set up as part of the Phase-2 project will provide the possibility to test detector components at 3500 m depth.

Abstract

Purpose: The experiment was performed to prove that exposure to a relatively weak extremely low frequency (ELF) magnetic field retards tadpoles' development., Methods: Two cohorts of Xenopus laevis laevis (Daudin) tadpoles were exposed during their immature period ( approximately 60 days) to a 50 Hz magnetic field of 63.9 < or = B < or = 76.4 microT rms (root mean square, average values) magnetic flux density in a solenoid. At the same time, as controls, two comparable cohorts were reared in two aquariums remote from the solenoid. Cohorts' degree of development was quantified by daily inspections of animal limbs and attributing them to a stage of the Nieuwkoop and Faber ( 1956 ) classification. The experiment was replicated three times., Results: (a) Mean developmental rate of exposed cohorts was reduced with respect to controls (0.43 vs. 0.48 stages/day, p < 0.001) starting from early larval stages; (b) Exposure increased the mean metamorphosis period of tadpoles by 2.4 days compared with the controls (p < 0.001); (c) Maturation rates of exposed and control tadpoles changed during maturation period; and (d) Important mortality, malformations or teratogenic effects were not observed in exposed matured tadpoles., Conclusion: A long-term exposure of X. laevis tadpoles to a relatively weak 50 Hz magnetic field causes a sub-lethal effect that slows down their larval developmental rate and delays their metamorphosis.

Abstract

The kinetics of reconstitution of bovine superoxide dismutase from Cu2+ and the copper-free enzyme have been studied by activity, u.v.-absorption, electron-paramagnetic-resonance and pulsed-nuclear-magnetic-resonance measurements. The process appears to be first-order up to 80% completion in most conditions, and is pH-dependent, with an apparent pK of 6.5. U.v.-absorption and solvent proton relaxation rate measurements show that fast binding of Cu2+ occurs, and the initial ligands are likely to be, at least in part, those of the native active site. The recovery of the native activity and spectroscopic properties is a slow process with activation energies of 92 kJ/mol at pH 5.3 and 8.4kJ/mol at pH 8.1 and can be described as a rearrangement of the site around the bound metal. The rate of this process is lower in partially recombined protein samples, probably because of intersubunit interactions.
