1. Cognitive behavioral therapy for patients with schizophrenia

Abstract: Introduction In treating schizophrenia, there is growing interest in introducing and renewing psychosocial therapies, including psychotherapy. In recent years, this has specifically entailed the adaption of particular cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) approaches, which were previously only utilized for treating anxiety and mood disorders. The negative symptomatology of schizophrenia, which has proven to be especially difficult to treat, can be a challenge for CBT, particularly in terms of enhancing relationships with family and friends and work engagement. Objectives The objective was to summarize the advantages of CBT treatment in schizophrenia briefly. Methods Patients with schizophrenia frequently have comorbid problems, such as anxiety disorders (and disorders) and traumatic experiences, which can be effectively treated with CBT. In addition to pharmacological therapy, CBT is acknowledged as the gold standard in several countries for the treatment of schizophrenia. According to studies, combining CBT with medication can minimize psychotic symptoms. Results Regarding treatment, Beck describes the use of typical CBT techniques: building trust and engagement; working collaboratively to understand the meaning of symptoms; understanding the patient’s interpretation of past and present events, particularly those that the patient believes are related to the development and persistence of his or her current problems; normalizing these experiences and educating the patient about the stress-vulnerability model, and socialization. Clarifying the emotional and behavioral repercussions of a delusion’s activation leads to an initial examination of the evidence-based on more peripheral interpretations. It is recommended to treat negative symptoms such as amotivation, anergia, anhedonia, and social disengagement with behavioral self-monitoring, activity scheduling, ratings of mastery and enjoyment, graded work assignments, and assertiveness training. Conclusions In treatment settings where physicians are already utilizing high-quality psychoeducational materials to enhance adherence, an excellent foundation exists for introducing individual CBT for schizophrenia patients. 2. Structural brain MRI studies in autism spectrum disorder

Abstract: Introduction Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) refers to a group of conditions characterized by quantitative differences in the morphology of the cortex and subcortex. Analyzing brain morphology qualitatively provides complementary information about possible underlying neurobiology. Studies of neuroradiological findings in ASD have produced mixed results in a large and independent sample. Objectives A small cerebellum associated with pons hypoplasia, or a posterior fossa cyst, may indicate causal developmental mechanisms. Therefore, neuroradiological findings could help elucidate the neurodevelopmental processes associated with ASD. MRI “minor abnormalities” also included dilatation of the Virchow-Robin gaps, an enlarged cisterna magna, pineal gland cysts, and arachnid or choroidal cysts not included in specified categories. Methods There were anomalies in the corpus callosum (hypoplasia), cerebellum, brain stem, abnormal white matter signal intensity, macrocephaly, ventriculomegaly, abnormal myelination patterns, ventricular system size, Arnold Chiari I malformation, cortical dysplasia and atrophy, hippocampal malformations, and pituitary glands. These anomalies were referred to as “major abnormal findings”. Results The most common minor abnormality is the mega cisterna magna. Some authors propose a minor abnormality such as this as a marker for brain dysgenesis. According to Zimmer and colleagues, enlargements of the cisterna magna are generally accompanied by cerebellar hypoplasia and ventriculomegaly, as well as lower performance on speech tasks (verbal and semantic fluency) common among individuals with autism spectrum disorders. The relationship between the presence of mega cisterna magna and language difficulties could be studied further in a subsequent study. Abnormal dilation of the cisterna magna is thought to be related to alterations in the cerebellar volumes. Conclusions Clinical MRI assessments may be helpful in the context of diagnoses and are potentially valuable for further studies of the pathogenesis of autism. The potential utility of routine brain MRI is in discovering early morphologic biomarkers for ASD. Disclosure of Interest None Declared

6. Prognostic value of brain natriuretic peptide in COVID-19 with or without acute heart failure

Abstract: Background Although Brain Natriuretic Peptide (BNP) provides strong prognostic information of an unfavorable outcome in patients with acute heart failure (AHF), there is little information of its relevance as a biomarker for outcomes in COVID-19 and its complications Purpose To evaluate the association of increased BNP levels with complications and in-hospital mortality in a cohort of hospitalized COVID-19 patients. Methods The study included COVID-19 patients with data on BNP levels included in the ISACS COVID-19 registry. The population was categorized according to the presence of peak BNP levels ≥100 pg/mL during hospitalization. Primary outcomes included in-hospital mortality, AHF or acute respiratory failure (ARF, defined as PiO2/FiO2 Results Of the 1152 patients included in the study, 615 (53.4%) had elevated BNP levels. These subjects were older (69.9±13.8 vs 59.1±16.8, p-value Conclusions In COVID-19, blood BNP level not only appears to be predictor of in-hospital mortality and AHF but was also independently associated with an increased risk of ARF. This finding supports the routine use of BNP in all patients admitted to hospital for COVID-19, regardless of a prior history of CVD. Funding Acknowledgement Type of funding sources: None.

7. Prevalence of standard modifiable cardiovascular risk factors in patients with ST segment elevation myocardial infarction and its relation with outcomes

Abstract: Background It has been recently suggested that more than 15% of patients with ST-segment–elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) lack any of the standard modifiable risk factors (cigarette smoking, diabetes, hyperlipidemia, and hypertension -SMuRFs). This claim implies that other factors play a significant role in development of STEMI and has led to considerable interest in genetic causes of coronary heart disease including family history (FHx) Purpose To investigate whether FHx may be a significant driver for STEMI in patients without SMuRFs. Methods We analyzed 11,840 patients with ACSs, without evidence of prior cardiovascular disease (CVD) enrolled in the ISACS-TC (International Survey of Acute Coronary Syndromes in Transitional Countries) registry between January 2010 to January 2021. Main outcome measures were the adjusted rates of STEMI and 30-day mortality from STEMI using multivariable logistic regression models. Patients presenting with non-ST elevation acute coronary syndromes served as controls. Results Among patients with STEMI, at least 1 of the 4 conventional risk factors was present in 88.1% of women and 86.7% of men. Overall, 3,194 patients (27.0%) self-reported a FHx of CV disease, defined as a first-degree relative with premature CV events (men, age Conclusions In direct contrast with recent findings, almost 90% of patients with STEMI have SMuRFs. Self-reported FHx is not a significant risk factor for development of STEMI and related high rate of CV mortality in patients without SMuRFs. Although research on genetic causes of heart disease is important, public health policies, and research efforts should place significant emphasis on the 4 SMuRFs and the lifestyle behaviors causing them to reduce the epidemic of STEMI. Abstract: BACKGROUND: The prevalence of atrial fibrillation(AF) and diabetes mellitus is rising to epidemic proportions. We aimed to assess the impact of diabetes on the management and outcomes of patients with AF.METHODS: The EORP-AF General Long-Term Registry is a prospective, observational registry from 250 centres across 27 European countries. Outcomes of interest were as follows: i)rhythm control interventions; ii)quality of life; iii)healthcare resource utilisation; and iv)major adverse events.RESULTS: Of 11,028 patients with AF, the median age was 71 (63-77) years and 2537 (23.0%) had diabetes. Median follow-up was 24 months. Diabetes was related to increased use of anticoagulation but less rhythm control interventions. Using multivariable analysis, at 2-year follow-up, patients with diabetes were associated with greater levels of anxiety (p = 0.038) compared to those without diabetes. Overall, diabetes was associated with worse health during follow-up, as indicated by Health Utility Score and Visual Analogue Scale. Healthcare resource utilisation was greater with diabetes in terms of length of hospital stay (8.1 (±8.2) vs. 6.1 (±6.7) days); cardiology and internal medicine/general practitioner visits; and emergency room admissions. Diabetes was an independent risk factor of major adverse cardiovascular event (MACE; HR 1.26 [95% CI, 1.04-1.52]), all-cause mortality (HR 1.28 [95% CI, 1.08-1.52]), and cardiovascular mortality (HR 1.41 [95% CI, 1.09-1.83]).CONCLUSION: In this contemporary AF cohort, diabetes was present in 1 in 4 patients and it served as an independent risk factor for reduced quality of life, greater healthcare resource utilisation and excess MACE, all-cause mortality and cardiovascular mortality. There was increased use of anticoagulation therapy in diabetes but with less rhythm control interventions.

Abstract: BACKGROUND: Cardiac troponins (cTn) have been reported to be predictors for adverse outcomes in atrial fibrillation (AF), patients, but their actual use is still unclear.AIM: To assess the factors associated with cTn testing in routine practice and evaluate the association with outcomes.METHODS: Patients enrolled in the ESC-EHRA EORP-AF General Long-Term Registry were stratified into 3 groups according to cTn levels as (i) cTn not tested, (ii) cTn in range (≤99th percentile), (iii) cTn elevated (>99th percentile). The composite outcome of any thromboembolism /any acute coronary syndrome/cardiovascular (CV) death, defined as Major Adverse Cardiovascular Events (MACE) and all-cause death were the main endpoints.RESULTS: Among 10 445 AF patients (median age 71 years, 40.3% females) cTn were tested in 2834 (27.1%). cTn was elevated in 904/2834 (31.9%) and in-range in 1930/2834 (68.1%) patients. Female sex, in-hospital enrollment, first-detected AF, CV risk factors, history of coronary artery disease, and atypical AF symptoms were independently associated with cTn testing. Elevated cTn were independently associated with a higher risk for MACE (Model 1, hazard ratio [HR] 1.74, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.40-2.16, Model 2, HR 1.62, 95% CI 1.28-2.05; Model 3 HR 1.76, 95% CI 1.37-2.26) and all-cause death (Model 1, HR 1.45, 95% CI 1.21-1.74; Model 2, HR 1.36, 95% CI 1.12-1.66; Model 3, HR 1.38, 95% CI 1.12-1.71).CONCLUSIONS: Elevated cTn levels were associated with an increased risk of all-cause mortality and adverse CV events. Clinical factors that might enhance the need to rule out CAD were associated with cTn testing.

10. Malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumour in a dog presenting as a pseudo aneurysm of the left jugular vein: a case report

Abstract: The authors report an autopsy case of a malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumour in a 9-year-old female Akito-ino dog, presenting as a pseudo aneurysm of the left jugular vein. Signs and symptoms included swelling of the neck and legs, dyspnea, malaise and weight loss. Post-mortem examination revealed a tumour mass (8 × 6, 5 × 6 cm), localized to the left paravertebrally, and on the level of C7 to T2 vertebral bodies; additional masses were observed in both lungs, heart and left kidney. On the basis of necropsy, histological findings and immunophenotype, the tumour was classsified as a malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumour. Immunohistochemistry especially positivity for S-100 protein can be helpful in distinguishing this type of neoplasm from other malignancies with similar morphologies.

Abstract: WOS: 000468732700018, PubMed ID: 31054483, Background and aims: One of the objectives of the ESC-EORP EUROASPIRE V survey is to determine how well European guidelines on the management of dyslipidaemias are implemented in coronary patients. Methods: Standardized methods were used by trained technicians to collect information on 7824 patients from 130 centers in 27 countries, from the medical records and at a visit at least 6 months after hospitalization for a coronary event. All lipid measurements were performed in one central laboratory. Patients were divided into three groups: on high-intensity LDL-C-lowering-drug therapy (LLT), on low or moderate-intensity LLT and on no LLT. Results: At the time of the visit, almost half of the patients were on a high-intensity LLT. Between hospital discharge and the visit, LLT had been reduced in intensity or interrupted in 20.8% of the patients and had been started or increased in intensity in 11.7%. In those who had interrupted LLT or had reduced the intensity, intolerance to LLT and the advice of their physician were reported as the reason why in 15.8 and 36.8% of the cases, respectively. LDL-C control was better in those on a high-intensity LLT compared to those on low or moderate intensity LLT. LDL-C control was better in men than women and in patients with self-reported diabetes. Conclusions: The results of the EUROASPIRE V survey show that most coronary patients have a less than optimal management of LDL-C. Abstract: Background:Adult-onset Still’s disease (AOSD) and systemic juvenile idiopathic arthritis (SJIA) are rare autoinflammatory disorders associated with an activated IL-1 pathway, characterized by spiking fever, rash, arthritis, lymphadenopathy, hepatosplenomegaly and serositis. There is a growing understanding that SJIA and AOSD are one disease with different ages of onset, i.e. Still’s disease. The anaSTILLs study (anakinra inStill´sdisease) was designed to further evaluate efficacy and safety of anakinra in patients with Still´s disease across all age groups.Objectives:The primary objective was to demonstrate efficacy of anakinra versus placebo as assessed by ACR30 response with absence of fever at Week 2. Secondary objectives included: early onset of efficacy, sustained efficacy, time to study drug discontinuation, safety, pharmacokinetics, clinical signs and biomarkers.Methods:‘anaSTILLs’ was a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, 12-week study including patients with active and newly diagnosed (6 months) Still´s disease according to adapted ILAR criteria if Results:12 patients were randomized and received study drug: 6 anakinra (2 mg/kg n=2, 4 mg/kg n=4) and 6 placebo, the study was terminated early due to slow recruitment. 1 patient on placebo had lymphoma, not Still’s disease, and was excluded; thus in total 11 patients were analyzed for efficacy, 8 were children [median (range) age=4.0 (1-11) years] and 3 were adults [median (range) age=32.0 (25-51) years]. 55% were male and the mean symptom duration was 74.2 days. All patients on anakinra but none on placebo achieved ACR30 response with absence of fever at Week 2 (p-value=0.0022). The efficacy of anakinra was further demonstrated by superiority to placebo in ACR50/70/90 responses with absence of fever at Week 2. All placebo patients discontinued the study within 6 weeks, 2 due to progressive disease, 2 due to lack of efficacy and 1 due to withdrawal by patient. There was a numerically higher proportion with early onset of efficacy (Week 1) in the anakinra group compared to placebo. The ACR30/50/70/90 responses in the anakinra group were sustained throughout the study period. Patients in the anakinra group had a prompt and persistent decrease in CRP and ferritin levels at Week 1, which was not observed in the placebo group. There were no unexpected safety findings. All anakinra patients developed anti-drug antibodies (ADAs) at some timepoint during the study. ADAs were persistent throughout the treatment period, except in one patient. Titers were low to moderate. One placebo patient had low ADA titers at one occasion. Abstract: Background Antiphospholipid syndrome (APS) is a systemic autoimmune disease characterised by thrombophilic state and circulating antiphospholipid antibodies (aPL) including anti beta2-GPI. Objectives Since than it became one of the most systemic conditions. In the last three and half decades, a variety of clinical manifestations involving almost all organs and tissues (cardiac, pulmonary, neurological, renal, cutaneous, hematologic, gastrointestinal, ocular, skeletal and endocrinology), have been described associated with antiphospholipid antibodies (aPL). Methods Our study comprises a total of 608 patients: 420 primary APS (PAPS) patients and 188 SLE patients with secondary APS (SAPS). aPL analysis included detection of aCL, as2GPI, and LA. Results Thrombosis was diagnosed in 46.5% patients, with higher prevalence in PAPS compared to SAPS patients: 51.2% and 38.3%, respectively, p=0.045. Pseudoinfective endocarditis was observed in 12.8% secondary APS patients and 3.1% in primary APS patients (p=0.004). 30% of the patients with high levels of aCL IgG antibodies had valve thickening and dysfunction, as compared to 4.1% without valve abnormalities (p=0.002). Presence of s2GPI IgG was significantly related to stroke, and overall s2GPI (IgG and IgM) positivity was significantly related to TIA in SAPS patients. Valvular manifestations were significantly related to TIA in both groups of patients and were independent risk factors for TIA in PAPS (OR 3.790 CI 1.597–8.998 p=0.003: table 2). In PAPS, epilepsy correlated with s2GPI-IgM, migraine with aCL-IgM, thrombocytopenia with aCL-IgM, aCL-IgG, anti s2GPI-IgG and LA. Livedo reticularis was more prominent in PAPS with high levels of aCL-IgG. Skin ulcerations were more prevalent in aCL-IgM positive SAPS patients and epilepsy more frequently had high levels of anti s2GPI-IgG in SAPS. Conclusions In this cross-section analysis of a large cohort of APS patients we analysed that APS patients can be presented with a wide variety of thrombotic and nonthrombotic manifestations. Abstract: In this paper we focus on the comparative analysis between Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet and its modern version, Anouilh’s Romeo and Jeannette . Anouilh is a representative of modern playwrights who evoke Shakespeare in their argument that a number of structures in our society are enemies of the authentic individual. What they adopt from Shakespeare is the capacity of man to relate with the world in a loving way. We argue that Anouilh’s Romeo and Jeannette fits the template of Shakespeare’s Tragic Equation – the mythical pattern present in all of the Bard’s works, the tragedy of the Lover devoid of love. These works evoke Shakespeare’s warning: that modern society is not conducive of love. On the contrary, the system is based on the suppression of genuine human affection; its re-emergence would subvert the dominant power-relations. In the introduction, we attempt to define the notion of romantic love by referring to the works of Bloom, Illouz, Vyvyan, etc. The following two segments of the paper deal with the analysis of the romantic relationship in Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet and its modern evocations in the work of Anouilh. In the conclusion, the destructive tendencies of the (modern) patriarchal society are yet again highlighted and linked to Shakespeare’s warning and desire to make his audience and readers perceive, judge and finally condemn them.

Abstract: objective. To assess the early electrocardiogram (ECG) changes induced by physical training in preadolescent professional football players. design and methods. Ninety-four highly trained male football players (mean age — 12,85 ± 0,84 years) competing in the Serbian Football League (at least 7 training hours/week) and 47 age-matched healthy male controls were enrolled in the study. They were screened by ECG and echocardiography at a tertiary referral cardiocentre. The control group had sedentary life style (less than 2 training hours/week). Characteristic ECG intervals and ECG voltage were compared and reference range was given for preadolescent footballers. results. Highly significant differences between preadolescent athletes and sedentary controls were registered in all ECG parameters: P wave voltage (p 0,05). QTc interval duration in athletes was not very strongly, but indeed positively correlated with left atrium dilatation, left ventricular (LV) end-systolic and end-diastolic dimensions, LV myocardial index (LVMI), LVM/body surface area (BSA) 1,5 and LVM/h 2,7 indices. There was no correlation between QTc interval duration and LVM as well as LV wall thickness. conclusions.

Abstract: Background APS pathophysiology is not clear enough yet since it has been implicated that aPL can activate cells (endothelial cells, monocytes, platelets), interfere with hemostatic reactions and activate complement reactions [1,2]. Objectives The aim of this study was to evaluate oxidative stress markers and it relations to endothelial damage as risk factor for thrombosis in patients with primary (PAPS) and secondary (SAPS) antiphospholipid syndrome (APS) in correlation to traditional risk factors. Methods Flow mediated (FMD) and nitroglycerine (NMD) induced dilation of the brachial artery were studied in 140 APS patients (90 PAPS, 50 SAPS) and 40 controls matched by age, sex and conventional risk factors for atherosclerosis. Markers of oxidative stress: lipid hydroperoxydes (LOOH), advanced oxidation protein products (AOPP), total sulfhydryl grups (tSHG) and paraoxonase 1 activity (PON1) were determined by spectrophotometric method. Results Oxidative stress dominate in APS patients. LOOH and AOPP correlate to lipid fractions (p Conclusions Endothelial dysfunction is doubtlessly present in APS patients with oxidative imbalance as additional risk factor among other risk factors for clinical event. Anticardiolipin antibodies affect endothelial dependent vasodilatation in SAPS patients. Abstract: Background Antiphospholipid syndrome (APS) patients express skin manifestations with the presence of various levels of antiphospholipid antibodies (aPL).Several studies have shown the frequency of dermatological manifestations with APS1,2,3, including livedo reticularis, cutaneous ulcers, acrocyanosis, and other. Objectives Dermatological manifestations can be the initial clue in the diagnosis of this disease. Methods Our study includes a total of 508 APS patients; 360 were PAPS patients (283 female and 77 male, mean age 44.0±12.9 years),148 had APS associated with SLE/SAPS (133 female and 15 male,mean age 47.7±14.8 years).aPL analysis included:LA, aCL (IgG/IgM), β2GPI (IgG/IgM).In all patients, we collected data considering frequently occured skin lesions. Results Our results showed prevalence of skin manifestations in SAPS group of patinenst regading to PAPS (Table 1). Patients with skin manifestations overall had higher prevalence of thrombosis (Table 2). Abstract: During the past 10 years, the health of people in Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union has undergone changes very different from the health patterns seen in their Western counterparts. Mortality from cardiovascular disease has been decreasing continuously in the USA and many Western European countries, but it has increased or remained unchanged in many of the states of Eastern Europe. Analysis of this phenomenon has been hindered by insufficient information. The International Registry of Acute Coronary Syndromes registry study in Transitional Countries (ISACS-TC) is both a retrospective - over a 1-year period - and prospective study which was designed in order to obtain data of patients with acute coronary syndromes (ACSs) in countries with economy in transition in Central and Eastern Europe, and herewith control and optimize internationally guideline recommended therapies in these countries. Adhesion to the project was given by 112 Collaborating Centres in 17 countries with economy in transition (Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Belarius, Bulgaria, Croatia, Hungary, Kosovo, Latvia, Lithuania, Macedonia, Moldova, Montenegro, Romania, Russian Federation, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia, and Ukraine). A total of 47 cluster sites in 11 countries in Central and Eastern Europe are currently collaborating in ISACS-TC. The registry encourages optimal individualization of evidence-based therapies and the international patient body ensures good representation of multiple practice patterns. It may help to make an additional improvement in clinical outcomes of countries with economy in transition.

25. NEW TOMATO HYBRIDS WITH LONG SHELF LIFE

Abstract: Slow ripening and long shelf life of tomato fruits are traits controlled by several ripening inhibitor genes (nor - non-ripening, nr - never ripe, rin - ripening inhibitor, ale - alcobaca). In our tomato breeding programs, the best results had the combination of rin/rin(+) genotype. Fruits of these genotypes ripen slowly, have a shelf life of 2-3 weeks and at the same time have relatively good color, firmness and taste. The results are tomato hybrids Nada F-1 and Sampion F-1. Hybrid Nada F-1 is indeterminate, with large habitus and a good amount of foliage. Fruits are very firm, round to flattened globe, smooth, without the green shoulder and average weight is 200-220 g. Unripe fruits are dark green, while ripened fruits are deep red. This hybrid is resistant to Verticillitan albo-atrum, Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. lycopersici and Meloidogyne spp. Hybrid Sampion F-1 is indeterminate, with medium habitat and a good amount of foliage. Fruits are very firm, round and smooth, without the green shoulder and ribs, and average weight is 180-200 g. Unripe fruits are light green, while ripened fruits are deep red. This hybrid is resistant to Verticillium albo-atrum, Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. lycopersici and Meloidogyne spp.

Abstract: Summary objective Little is known of the usefulness of GH secretagogues (GHSs) in GH-deficient (GHD) adults. The objective of this study was to determine the number of responders to treatment with NN703 in GHD adults. design A multicentre, randomized, double-blind, and placebo-controlled study. patients Ninety-seven GHD adults were included. measurements The GH response before and after 1 week of oral treatment with NN703 (n = 83) or placebo (n = 14) was determined. The first and last dose of NN703 was 3 mg/kg, whereas the dose of NN703 was 1·5 mg/kg/day during the 6 days between the first and last doses. Furthermore, all 97 patients received 1 µg/kg GH-releasing hormone (GHRH) 3 weeks after the last dose of NN703. results Serum GH peak and area under curve (AUC) values after the first NN703 administration were greater than those after placebo administration (P < 0·05). However, after correction for the lower body mass index (BMI) in the NN703 group, this difference lost statistical significance. After 1 week of therapy, GH peak and AUC values were similar following the final doses of NN703 and placebo. Serum peak and AUC values of other anterior pituitary hormones were similar between the NN703 and placebo groups both after the first and last administration of study drug. Nine of the 83 patients (11%) responded with a serum peak GH concentration ≥ 5 µg/l after the first and/or last NN703 administration, whereas no patient responded after placebo administration. Abstract: Objective: The primary objective was to demonstrate bioequivalence between the estrogen components of Activelle® ( 1 mg estradiol (E 2 ) + 0.5 mg norethisterone acetate (NETA)) and the combined phase of Novofem (1 mg E 2 + 1 mg NETA) and between the NETA components of the combined phase of Novofem trade; (1 mg E 2 + 1 mg NETA) and Trisequens® (2 mg E 2 + I mg NETA). Subjects, materials and methods: The study design was double-blind, randomized, three-way, balanced six-sequence cross-over. The washout period was 14 days between treatments. Single doses of the above-described tablets were administered in the morning following an overnight fast to 24 healthy postmenopausal or bilaterally oophorectomized women. Plasma concentration profiles of E 2 , estrone (E 1 ; pharmacologically active metabolite of E 2 ) and norethindrone (NET; NET was determined since NETA is very rapidly metabolized to NET) were measured over 72 h, and 36 h, respectively. For the two former substances a baseline correction was performed by subtracting the mean of two predose measurements from the concentrations measured after dosing. Results: One subject dropped out of the study, completing only one treatment sequence; therefore, the results are based on 23 subjects. The baseline-corrected E 2 and E 1 AUC 0-t (Novofem ) / AUC 0-t (Activelle®) ratios were 105% and 100%, respectively; and the C max ratios 100% and 105%, respectively. Identical median t max was observed for E 2 (6 h) and for E 1 (5 h). The NET AUC 0-t (Novofem ) /AUC 0-t (Trisequens®) ratio was 95%, and the corresponding C max ratio 98%. The median t max for Novofem was 0.75 h and for Trisequens® 1.0 h. Conclusion: Bioequivalence was demonstrated for E 2 , E 1 and NET in accordance with the study objectives.

30. INFLUENCE OF AFILA 'AF AF' GENE ON HEIGHT PEAS PLANT (PISUM SATIVUM L.)

Abstract: In order to investigate the effect of the "afila" genotype on the plant height, the peas variety Filigreen, of the "afila" type, was crossed with 12 other varieties possessing normal leaf structure. At its recessive homozygous stage, the "af gene causes the modification of the pea plants so that they only form vines with stipules instead of normal structure leaves. The genetic analysis of F1, and F2 generation (the segregation ratio between the normal and "afila) leaves being 3: 1) proved the monogenic recessive character of this feature. Concerning plant height, F, hybrids were on average 12% higher than their male parents. In the F2 generation, "AF AF" plants were 6% lower compared to F, generation plants, while "af af plants were 11% lower. The "AF AF" genotype plants were 5% higher than their male parents, but the "af af genotype plants had the same height as their male parents.

31. Correlation of nuclear morphometry of primary melanoma of the skin with clinicopathological parameters and expression of tumor suppressor proteins (p53 and p16(INK4a)) and bcl-2 oncoprotein

Abstract: To determine the correlation of nuclear morphometry of primary cutaneous malignant melanoma (CMM) with clinicopathological parameters and the expression of p53, p16INK4a, and bcl-2.Image analysis and computerized nuclear morphometry were used in a series of 53 primary CMM (nodular melanoma/NM, N=33, and superficially spreading melanoma/SSM, N=20). The clinicopathological parameters determined for each tumor were histological type, maximal tumor diameter, Breslow thickness, Clark level, ulceration, mitotic index (MI) and pathological disease stage. Measured nuclear features included size, shape and optical density (OD). The results were correlated with the expression of p53, p16INK4a and bcl-2.Significant differences between NM and SSM were found for the nuclear area, OD, and perimeter (p0.05). MI showed significant correlations with nuclear area, perimeter and Feret diameter (p0.05). In relation to the Clark level, significant differences were found for OD (p0.01) and circularity of nuclei (p0.05) between levels II and IV, while the Breslow thickness was not significantly correlated with nuclear morphometric variables. Significantly negative correlations were observed between OD and the expression of p53 and bcl-2, while significant positive correlation was found between the nuclear circularity and p53 immunoreaction intensity. There was no significant correlation between the expression of p16INK4a protein and karyometric variables.OD and circularity are significantly correlated with p53 and bcl-2, and nuclear area with MI. These karyometric variables may determine a more aggressive phenotype of melanoma cells.

Abstract: We present an original surgical technique for the treatment of an isolated paralysis of the serratus anterior muscle. We used this technique on six patients in whom nonoperative treatment failed. We fixed the inferior angle of the scapula at approximately 35 degrees of lateral position with synthetic ribbon: not to the rib behind the inferior scapular angle but to the next lower rib, usually the eighth. Therefore the scapula was not fixed directly to the pectoral cage, but over a loop of 2-2.5 cm in length. This is the crux of the procedure, because this "loose" fixation enables lateral movement of the scapula and complete painless arm elevation without scapular winging. The follow-up period was 1-7 years (mean, 4 years and 9 months). The clinical results were "excellent" for five patients and "very good" in one patient. We recommend this procedure for its excellent restoration of shoulder function.

33. VARIABILITY OF STEM HEIGHT, GRAIN PER POD, THOUSAND-GRAIN MASS AND GRAIN SHAPE FOR SOME BEAN VARIETIES

Abstract: Ten local genotypes were selected from a genetic resource collection of 118, for the future bean breeding programme of the Centre for Vegetable in Smederevska. Palanka. Standard analytical methods were used for describing some traits (stem height, grain per pod, 1000 seed mass and grain shape). Significant differences were observed between the bean genotypes examined. The highest stem was found in Sumporas (91.4 cm), and the lowest in Tetovac type (38 cm). Absolute grain mass varied between 284.7 g and 583.9 g (Sumporas and P15 S respectively). The length: width grains ratio varied between 1.41 (P 1) and 2.40 (Žutotrban). The thickness: width ratio varied between 0.62 and 0.85 (line in Tetovac type and Galeb, Roze bubrežasti respectively). There were no significant differences for grain per pod. The highest coefficient of variability was observed for stem height (33.26%), whilst the lowest was observed for grain number/pod (16.31%). The variability of analysed traits as a result of the effect of genetic and environmental factors was established. The analysis of phenotypic variance components for stem height (82.1 %) and absolute grain mass (88.8 %) showed a higher impact of genotype than environment. INTRODUCTION Breeding beans requires detailed knowledge of a number of traits directly affecting yield. Research carried out by Beaver et al. (1985), Nienhuis and Singh (1988), White and Gonzales (1990), Welsh et al. (1995), Ranalli (1996) suggested the importance of stem height, number of grains per pod, thousand-grain mass and grain characteristics for the breeding process. With the objective of carrying out a better and more detailed evaluation of some bean populations / varieties from the collection of the Centre for Vegetable Crops, a number of quantitative features were investigated (stem height, number of grains per pod, grain mass per plant and grain shape with its length/width and thickness/width ratio). The features investigated were significant for bean selection and they affected the yield and the manner of breeding. MATERIALS AND METHODS In order to investigate the variability of the current gene fund that originates from this region, the trial was set up in five replications applying the random block system, on loamy soil with ten populations/varieties from the collection of the Centre (Table 1). The basic data were recorded from 30 plants per replicate without selection, after reaching the stage of physiological maturity at the laboratory of the Centre. In addition to recording the absolute maximum and minimum, mean value and coefficient of variation were calculated by applying statistical methods as parameters for estimating the variability. Variance analysis (ANOVA) (Hadzivukovic, 1991) was carried out for stem height, number of grains per pod and 1000-grain mass. The lowest stem height was recorded in a line of Tetovac type (ξ = 38 cm), whereas the highest was found in Sumporas (ξ= 91.4 cm) (Table 1). The coefficient of variation for this feature was 33.26 %. The variance analysis suggested that there were differences between the genotypes (Table 2). By the analysis of the phenotypic variance components, it was concluded that the genetic component prevailed over the environmental one as for the stem height feature. This was also in accordance with the heritability value, 82.14 %. As for phenotypic variation, gene effects were stronger than environmental ones, suggesting the significance of major genes in forming expression of the phenotype. According to the genotypic and phenotypic coefficients of variation, the stem height feature varied most as compared to the other features. Number of grains per pod is an indicator, which directly affects the yield. On the basis of ANOVA, there were no differences between the genotypes. Considering the results of the variance analysis, other indicators are not discussed. Sumporas and P1 were characterised by small mass of 1000 grains (ξ = 284.7, and 287.3 g respectively). P15 genotype with ξ= 583.9 g had the largest absolute mass of grains. High statistical significance was recorded for this feature (Table 2). The coefficient of variation was 26.08 %. The analysis of the components of the phenotypic variance for this feature suggested gene effects prevailed over the environmental variance. Another proof of a weaker environmental variance compared with the genetic variance was the heritability of h = 88.8 %. Length/width ratio ranged from 1.47 (P1) to 2.40 (Zutotrban). Grain thickness/width ratio ranged from 0.62 (a line in Tetovac type) to 0.85 (Biser and Roze bubrezasti). CONCLUSION Within the lines investigated, there were differences in the mean values for the following features: stem height, absolute mass of grains, grain length/width ratio, and grain thickness/width ratio. For the number of grains per pod, there were no differences between the lines. The highest stem was recorded in Sumporas (91.4 cm), with the lowest in the line of Tetovac type (38 cm). Absolute grain mass varied between 284.7 g and 583.9 g (Sumporas and P15 S respectively). Grain length/width ratio varied from 1.41 (P1) to 2.40 (Zutotrban). Grain thickness/width ratio varied between 0.62 and 0.85 (a line in Tetovac Type and Galeb, Roze bubrezasti respectively). Based on analysis of the components of phenotypic variance, it was concluded that the genetic component prevailed. Environmental effects (non-genetic factors) affected the number of grains per pod. The values obtained from the parameters, as well as the recorded variability of the quantitative features studied, could be used as the criteria for choosing the genotypes for future efficient bean breeding. Abstract: The aim was to investigate effects of liraglutide on appetite and energy intake in a randomized, placebo-controlled, double-blind, crossover study. Eighteen subjects with type 2 diabetes were assigned to treatment with once-daily subcutaneous liraglutide (increasing by weekly 0.6 mg increments) or placebo for 3 weeks. Appetite ratings were assessed using visual analogue scales during a 5-h meal test. Energy and macronutrient intake during the subsequent ad libitum lunch were also measured. After 3 weeks, mean postprandial and minimum hunger ratings were significantly lower with liraglutide 1.8 mg than placebo (p 0.01), and the mean overall appetite score was significantly higher (p = 0.05), indicating reduced appetite. Liraglutide was associated with higher maximum fullness ratings (p = 0.001) and lower minimum ratings of prospective food consumption (p = 0.01). Mean estimated energy intake was 18% lower for liraglutide than placebo [estimated ratio 0.82 (95% CI 0.73;0.94); p = 0.004], but no significant differences in macronutrient distribution were noted. Findings suggest that reduced appetite and energy intake may contribute to liraglutide-induced weight loss.

Abstract: Objectives Liraglutide is a once-daily human GLP-1 analog being developed as a Type 2 diabetes therapy. A dose-finding study in Japanese patients with Type 2 diabetes showed liraglutide to produce dose-dependent decreases in HbA(1C). Studies have also shown that, with stepped dose titration, liraglutide is well tolerated. This double-blind trial in 24 healthy Japanese men assessed the safety, tolerability, pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of once-daily subcutaneous (s.c.) liraglutide using doses exceeding those previously studied, and using the stepped titration approach. Materials and methods Subjects were randomized to three groups in each of which 6 received liraglutide, and 2 placebo for 35 consecutive days. The daily dose of liraglutide was stepped from 5 microg/kg (s.c. abdomen, morning) to 10 and then 15 microg/kg at 7-day intervals. One group remained at this dose, the others titrating further to 20 and 25 microg/kg, respectively. Subjects remained at the study site from Day 21 until the end of the trial, with standard meals served during inhouse periods. Results No safety issues, hypoglycemia, gastrointestinal or any other adverse events were observed. Liraglutide showed dose-dependent increases in the pharmacokinetic parameters of AUC0-24 h, C(max) and C(trough), while t(max), t(1/2) and V(d/F) were constant. Mean plasma glucose concentrations were similar across all treatment groups at baseline, but dose-dependent decreases in mean and postprandial plasma glucose were seen with liraglutide, although all values remained within normal ranges. There was a tendency for weight to decrease with liraglutide in comparison to placebo. Conclusions Liraglutide appears to be well tolerated at doses of up to 25 microg/kg in Japanese subjects. Despite clear pharmacodynamic effects in this euglycemic cohort, a low risk for hypoglycemia was suggested together with good gastrointestinal tolerability.

Abstract: We investigated the effects of foliar fertilizers (Algazor, Liksal S, Liksal N and Liksal K in the doses of 2 L/ha, 4 L/ha and 8 L/ha) on bean yield, in three-year trials. By applying the variance analysis and the method of the factorial design (two factors), we recorded highly significant effects of the most of the foliar fertilizers on bean yield as compared to the control. The applied dose of the fertilizer also affected the bean yield. The highest effect on the average was recorded in the application of the fertilizer Liksal N in the dose of 8 L/ha. Not only difference between the years of investigation was recorded, but also an interaction between foliar fertilizer and year.

Abstract: Our investigation was based on viewing the problem of inheriting anthocyanin and vitamin C contents in F-1 progeny of lettuce. It was presumed that progenies with increased contents of these substances could be obtained. Diallel crossing of eight lettuce genotypes of different anthocyanin and vitamin C contents were performed. Parental and F-1 generations were investigated comparatively, and their mode of inheritance was determined. Concerning the inheritance of anthocyanin, dominant genes prevailed and a higher content of this substance was succeeded in F-1 generation, whereas concerning the inheritance of vitamin C content, it was recorded dominance mode of inheritance, when compared to the parents with lower vitamin C content. Apart from the dominance mode of inheritance, significant additive gene effects in inheriting vitamin C content were recorded.

Abstract: The aim of our selection research was to create new snap bean varieties suitable for all kinds of consumption and processing and also resistant to diseases. We used the following varieties for our crosses: Palanačka Rana, Šumadinka, Zora, Orbane and Hikos. All the varieties possessed yellow pods, but Šumadinka variety had yellow-marbled pods. Zora and Orbane varieties had round pods, Palanačka Rana gave oval-round pods, while Sumadinka and Hikos varieties produced flat pods. Orbane variety showed resistance to Common Bean Mosaic Virus (CBM) (Phaseolus virus 1) and to Colletotrichum lindemuthianum. Applying the Pedigree selection method, we performed individual selections and reciprocal crossing within hybrid population until we achieved the satisfactory level of homozygosity. Two new snap bean varieties, Julija and Darina, were selected as a result of our research. The characteristics of these new varieties are as follows: they were short in length (40 - 45 cm high), early of medium -early maturing-, showing simultaneous and concentrated suitability for all kinds of consumption. The 12 -16 cm long pods were of good quality, yellow or yellow-marbled, with oval or oval-round cut. The yielding ranged from 13-18 t/ha of technologically mature pods with genetic yield potential. The pods possessed both the genetic resistance to Common Bean Mosaic Virus (CBM) and tolerance to Anthracnose of beans.

Abstract: The expression of the tumor suppressor/oncoprotein p53 has been investigated in normal human placental villous trophoblast, in vitro propagated invasive extravillous trophoblast, SV40 tumor antigen (Tag)-immortalized extravillous trophoblast, human cytomegalovirus (hCMV)-infected syncytiotrophoblast and malignant trophoblast (choriocarcinoma) cell lines (JAR, JEG-3 and BeWo) using quantitative enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and Western immunoblot methods using monoclonal antibodies specific for wild-type and mutant p53. The normal villous and extravillous trophoblast cells expressed low levels of the wild-type p53 protein, whereas normal terminally differentiated multinucleated syncytiotrophoblast cells, as well as hCMV-infected syncytiotrophoblast, showed a higher expression of the wild-type p53 protein. SV40 Tag-immortalized invasive trophoblast cells also showed a high expression of the wild-type p53 protein which remained complexed with the Tag protein. All the choriocarcinoma cell lines over expressed the mutant form of the p53 protein. The increased expression of p53 protein in the SV40 Tag-immortalized invasive trophoblast and choriocarcinoma cells paralleled with increased expression of the mouse double minute 2 (mdm2) oncogenic protein. Transforming growth factor (TGF)-beta inhibited proliferation of normal extravillous trophoblast cells. The antiproliferative effects of TGF-beta were reduced in SV40 Tag-immortalized cells and non-detectable in choriocarcinoma cell lines JAR, BeWo and JEG-3. The inactivation of p53 owing to complexing with Tag in the immortalized premalignant trophoblast and p53 mutation in the malignant trophoblast may be responsible for their aberrant proliferation and refractoriness to antiproliferative effects of TGF-beta observed in these cells as compared to the normal trophoblast. These results may suggest the role of p53 protein in trophoblast differentiation, transformation and tumorigenesis.

Abstract: Human villous and extravillous trophoblast populations were isolated from first- and third-trimester placentae and were stimulated with viral and non-viral inducers to produce interferons (IFNs). Polyriboinosinic/polyribocytidylic acid [poly(I:C)] induced exclusively IFN-beta in trophoblast cultures, whereas viruses induced mixtures of IFN-alpha subtypes and -beta. The level of IFN production was dependent on the trophoblast population, type of inducer and the stage of differentiation of the trophoblast. First-trimester extravillous trophoblast cultures produced greater than five-fold more IFN than third-trimester villous trophoblast on a per cell basis, whereas term syncytiotrophoblast produced twice as much IFN as term mononuclear villous trophoblast when stimulated with the same inducer. Pretreatment of trophoblast cultures with platelet-derived growth factor and granulocyte/macrophage-colony stimulating factor (GM-CSF) increased the trophoblast IFN production. Tandem high-performance affinity chromatography of the virus-induced trophoblast IFNs resulted in the isolation of trophoblast IFN-alpha and -beta with specific antiviral activities of 0.75-2.73 x 10(8) IU/ml protein. The trophoblast-induced IFNs have antiproliferative and immunosuppressive properties, and, furthermore, activated natural killer cell activity. These data may suggest the possible roles of these IFNs during embryonic development with regard to protection of the fetus against viral infection and maternal immunity.

Abstract: The role of lithium in combination with tricyclic antidepressants (TCA) used in the treatment of unipolar depression has been much less studied than in the case of bipolar disorders. The aim of this study was to compare the therapeutic and side effects with doses and plasma concentrations in the patients with major (unipolar) depression (DSM-III-R criteria) treated by amitriptyline combine (At+Li) and mono-therapy. All three, of these regimens, were therapeutically effective, but after 6 weeks combined (At+Li) therapy showed the absence of the increased number of side effects.

Abstract: In a material of 88 patients with premature rupture of the membranes and unripe cervix, a comparative investigation was undertaken to compare the effects of prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) vaginal tablets and intravenous oxytocin on induction of labour. The patients were subdivided at random into two groups: 42 patients treatment with PGE2 and 46 treatment with intravenous oxytocin. The results did not reveal any significant differences in the numbers of successful inductions regardless of the Bishop score at the commencement of stimulation but the duration of induction was found to be briefer in the oxytocin group. No significant differences were observed in the numbers of instrumental interventions in the two groups nor in the frequencies of side effects and in the employment of analgesics. Treatment with PGE2 vaginal tablets is considered to be more acceptable by the patients and easier for the staff to use. The tablets were just as safe and reliable in use as intravenous oxytocin for induction of labour in cases of premature rupture of the membranes and Bishop scores less than 6, but the duration of induction was significantly longer.

Abstract: Purpose: To assess whether the efficacy of second-trimester ultrasound screening for fetal malformations is affected by patient-, staff-, team- or work environment-related factors. Methods and design: Prospective cohort study in a Danish University hospital in 1997 and 1998. Participants: A number of 7845 pregnant women who had an ultrasound screening in weeks 18–20. Ultrasound examinations were performed abdominally by eight nurses with special training in obstetrical ultrasonography. The ultrasonographers were divided into three groups according to their experience at the start of the study. Data: A record of all malformations diagnosed by ultrasound was entered into a database. Data included the name, date of birth, body mass index of the pregnant woman, date and time of the ultrasound scan, number of persons performing the scan, name of the first and last examiner, their charge and level of expertise, number of fetuses, gestational age, structural malformation diagnosed, information about amniocentesis, date of delivery, sex of the child(ren), malformation(s) diagnosed at delivery or autopsy. Follow-up of the children was done by searching their files and by a cross-check with the diagnostic registries of the two pediatric departments in the city of Copenhagen. The length of follow-up was between 12 and 36 months. The ability to detect significant malformations on ultrasound was related to: 1 factors related to the patient (body mass index, number of fetuses, gestational age at time of screening); 2 factors related to the staff (experience of sonographer); 3 factors related to the team (number of sonographers); 4 factors related to the work environment (weekday, time of day, number of scans, work monotony, number of ultrasound screenings for malformations, and work load in the ultrasound department). Results: Significant malformations were found in 106 fetuses, when followed up at least until 1 year of age, corresponding to an incidence of 1.3%. The overall detection rate was 65.1% as 69 malformations were detected and 37 were not. No case of neural tube defect, diaphragmatic hernia, gastroschisis or omphalocele was missed. Six out of seven cases of hydrocephalus were detected, while two cases of microcephaly were not. Regarding the severe heart malformations, one out of four cases of hypoplastic left heart was detected. High maternal body mass index was associated with a lower detection rate, while the presence of twins or the gestational age at the time of screening was not. There was no correlation between the sonographer's level of experience and the detection rate. Fetuses with an undetected malformation were significantly more often scanned by more than one sonographer than fetuses without malformations. There was a trend towards a lower detection rate on Thursdays, at mid-day, when most of the staff was at work, and when the number of malformation screenings exceeded 20 per day. Conclusions: In our center, 65% of significant malformations were diagnosed, a detection rate comparable to other centers, especially since we followed the children until the age of 1 year. The detection rate of fetal heart malformations was however, low, and therefore a course with special focus on this organ was offered to the sonographers. Our study demonstrates that among the patient-related factors high maternal body mass index was the only factor associated with a lower detection rate. Among the team-related factors, malformed fetuses were significantly more often examined by two sonographers than fetuses without congenital malformations. As to the factors related to the work environment, scans performed just before lunchtime or on days when most sonographers were at work seemed to have a lower detection rate. In order to minimize error, the following changes have been made: Appointments for screening were reorganized so they are not scheduled around mid-day. A morning- and a lunch-break without any planned examinations have been scheduled in order to allow all the staff to be together at some time during the day. When an experienced sonographer requests a second opinion, a doctor should give this. The new organization will be followed up in order to secure that the reorganization has not created new organizational mistakes.
