Chile produce más de 400 productos secundarios de pino radiata que en casi su totalidad se exportan. Estas exportaciones han ido aumentando continua y significativamente en los últimos años, demostrando lo idóneo de esta especie para producir productos secundarios de madera. Sin embargo muy pocos estudios se han realizado en procesos secundarios, como es el caso del moldurado, destinados a determinar las relaciones entre la energía de corte y la calidad superficial resultante. El propósito de este estudio es investigar para determinadas condiciones de corte (corte periférico 90-0) en pino radiata, las relaciones entre esfuerzos de corte, emisión acústica y la rugosidad superficial resultante del proceso de maquinado. Los resultados arrojaron que la medición de emisión acústica en el maquinado de pino radiata, está bien correlacionada con los cambios en las condiciones de corte y su rugosidad superficial, obteniéndose mayores niveles de emisión acústica y rugosidad superficial a medida que aumenta el espesor de viruta. Asimismo, los resultados de los esfuerzos de corte son más precisos respecto a la emisión acústica, especialmente en los espesores de viruta pequeños. Ambas mediciones muestran interesantes relaciones entre si, que permiten concluir que es necesario profundizar mas el trabajo en esta línea de investigación para aproximarse a los esfuerzos mediante la medición de emisión acústicaChile produces more than 400 secondary products of radiata pine that are exported almost entirely. These exports have been increasing continuously and significantly in the last years, pointing at the potential of this species producing secondary products. Nevertheless, very few studies have been realized in secondary processes in order to determine appropriate relationships between cutting energy and surface roughness. The purpose of this study was to investigate for determined cutting conditions (peripheral cut 90-0) in radiata pine, the relationships between cutting forces, acoustic emission and surface quality. The experimental results shows that the acoustic emission signals are well correlated with the change of the cutting conditions and with the surface roughness, with increased roughness and acoustic emission signals with higher chip thickness. As regards to the cutting forces, the results are more accurate than acoustic emission, especially in the low levels of chip thickness. Both measurements show interesting relationships among each other that permits to conclude that more intense research on this topic is necessary linking the cuttings forces with measurement of acoustic emission

Compositional structure of host-associated microbiomes is potentially affected by interactions among the microbes and between the microbes and the host. To quantify the relative importance of these contributions to the microbiome composition and variation, here we analyze absolute abundance (count) data for a minimal eight-species native microbiome in the Caenorhabditis elegans intestine. We find that a simple neutral model only considering migration, birth, death, and competition for space among the bacteria can capture the means and variances of bacterial abundance, but not the experimental bacteria-bacteria covariances. We find that either bacteria-bacteria interactions or correlations among bacterial population dynamics parameters induced by the host can qualitatively recapitulate the observed correlations among bacterial taxa. However, both models are underdetermined and not unique, and the combination of both mechanisms likely contributes. This highlights that single time-point measurements on their own are not sufficient to distinguish between two distinct biological mechanisms. Further, we observe that different interactions are required to explain (co)variance data in microbiota associated with different host genotypes, suggesting different community dynamics associated with these host types. Finally, we find that many of these signals are obscured when data are converted to proportions from counts, consistent with a growing literature on the limitations of compositional data for inference of population dynamics. We end with a discussion of the limitations of Lotka-Volterra type assumptions for microbial community data analysis revealed by our results.

Abstract The gut microbiome is essential for processing complex food compounds and synthesizing nutrients that the host cannot digest or produce, respectively. New model systems are needed to study how the metabolic capacity provided by the gut microbiome impacts the nutritional status of the host, and to explore possibilities for altering host metabolic capacity via the microbiome. Here, we colonized the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans gut with cellulolytic bacteria that enabled C. elegans to utilize cellulose, an otherwise indigestible substrate, as a carbon source. Cellulolytic bacteria as a community component in the worm gut can also support additional bacterial species with specialized roles, which we demonstrate by using Lactobacillus plantarum to protect C. elegans against Salmonella enterica infection. This work shows that engineered microbiome communities can be used to endow host organisms with novel functions, such as the ability to utilize alternate nutrient sources or to better fight pathogenic bacteria.

One of the surgical treatments for pelvic sarcoma is the restoration of hip function with a custom pelvic prosthesis after cancerous tumor removal. The orthopedic oncologist and orthopedic implant company must make numerous often subjective decisions regarding the design of the pelvic surgery and custom pelvic prosthesis. Using personalized musculoskeletal computer models to predict post-surgery walking function and custom pelvic prosthesis loading is an emerging method for making surgical and custom prosthesis design decisions in a more objective manner. Such predictions would necessitate the estimation of forces generated by muscles spanning the lower trunk and all joints of the lower extremities. However, estimating trunk and leg muscle forces simultaneously during walking based on electromyography (EMG) data remains challenging due to the limited number of EMG channels typically used for measurement of leg muscle activity. This study developed a computational method for estimating unmeasured trunk muscle activations during walking using lower extremity muscle synergies. To facilitate the calibration of an EMG-driven model and the estimation of leg muscle activations, EMG data were collected from each leg. Using non-negative matrix factorization, muscle synergies were extracted from activations of leg muscles. On the basis of previous studies, it was hypothesized that the time-varying synergy activations were shared between the trunk and leg muscles. The synergy weights required to reconstruct the trunk muscle activations were determined through optimization. The accuracy of the synergy-based method was dependent on the number of synergies and optimization formulation. With seven synergies and an increased level of activation minimization, the estimated activations of the erector spinae were strongly correlated with their measured activity. This study created a custom full-body model by combining two existing musculoskeletal models. The model was further modified and heavily personalized to represent various aspects of the pelvic sarcoma patient, all of which contributed to the estimation of trunk muscle activations. This proposed method can facilitate the prediction of post-surgery walking function and pelvic prosthesis loading, as well as provide objective evaluations for surgical and prosthesis design decisions.

Abstract Bismuth (III) sulfide thin films are prepared on glass substrates by physical vapor deposition technique. Then, the films are annealed at different temperatures from 150 to 350°C with nitrogen and nitrogen-sulfur atmospheres, respectively. The effect of annealing temperature on the optoelectronic properties is investigated. The layers were characterized using ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy, XRD, Raman spectroscopy, EDS analysis and Hall effect. The film annealed at 250°C in a nitrogen-sulfur atmosphere exhibited the best condition with an initial thickness of 106 nm and band gap of 1.37 eV. Also, Bismuthinite phase was obtained, close to the stoichiometry with 59.95 and 40.05 at % for bismuth and sulfur, respectively. The charge carrier concentration of 6.9x1019 cm-3 with a n-type conductivity, the resistivity of 0.19 Ω-cm, and mobility of 0.44 cm2V-1s-1 are obtained.

An emerging option for internal hemipelvectomy surgery is custom prosthesis reconstruction. This option typically recapitulates the resected pelvic bony anatomy with the goal of maximizing post-surgery walking function while minimizing recovery time. However, the current custom prosthesis design process does not account for the patient’s post-surgery prosthesis and bone loading patterns, nor can it predict how different surgical or rehabilitation decisions (e.g., retention or removal of the psoas muscle, strengthening the psoas) will affect prosthesis durability and post-surgery walking function. These factors may contribute to the high observed failure rate for custom pelvic prostheses, discouraging orthopedic oncologists from pursuing this valuable treatment option. One possibility for addressing this problem is to simulate the complex interaction between surgical and rehabilitation decisions, post-surgery walking function, and custom pelvic prosthesis design using patient-specific neuromusculoskeletal models. As a first step toward developing this capability, this study used a personalized neuromusculoskeletal model and direct collocation optimal control to predict the impact of ipsilateral psoas muscle strength on walking function following internal hemipelvectomy with custom prosthesis reconstruction. The influence of the psoas muscle was targeted since retention of this important muscle can be surgically demanding for certain tumors, requiring additional time in the operating room. The post-surgery walking predictions emulated the most common surgical scenario encountered at MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston. Simulated post-surgery psoas strengths included 0% (removed), 50% (weakened), 100% (maintained), and 150% (strengthened) of the pre-surgery value. However, only the 100% and 150% cases successfully converged to a complete gait cycle. When post-surgery psoas strength was maintained, clinical gait features were predicted, including increased stance width, decreased stride length, and increased lumbar bending towards the operated side. Furthermore, when post-surgery psoas strength was increased, stance width and stride length returned to pre-surgery values. These results suggest that retention and strengthening of the psoas muscle on the operated side may be important for maximizing post-surgery walking function. If future studies can validate this computational approach using post-surgery experimental walking data, the approach may eventually influence surgical, rehabilitation, and custom prosthesis design decisions to meet the unique clinical needs of pelvic sarcoma patients.

Subject-specific electromyography (EMG)-driven musculoskeletal models that predict muscle forces have the potential to enhance our knowledge of internal biomechanics and neural control of normal and pathological movements. However, technical gaps in experimental EMG measurement, such as inaccessibility of deep muscles using surface electrodes or an insufficient number of EMG channels, can cause difficulties in collecting EMG data from muscles that contribute substantially to joint moments, thereby hindering the ability of EMG-driven models to predict muscle forces and joint moments reliably. This study presents a novel computational approach to address the problem of a small number of missing EMG signals during EMG-driven model calibration. The approach (henceforth called “synergy extrapolation” or SynX) linearly combines time-varying synergy excitations extracted from measured muscle excitations to estimate 1) unmeasured muscle excitations and 2) residual muscle excitations added to measured muscle excitations. Time-invariant synergy vector weights defining the contribution of each measured synergy excitation to all unmeasured and residual muscle excitations were calibrated simultaneously with EMG-driven model parameters through a multi-objective optimization. The cost function was formulated as a trade-off between minimizing joint moment tracking errors and minimizing unmeasured and residual muscle activation magnitudes. We developed and evaluated the approach by treating a measured fine wire EMG signal (iliopsoas) as though it were “unmeasured” for walking datasets collected from two individuals post-stroke–one high functioning and one low functioning. How well unmeasured muscle excitations and activations could be predicted with SynX was assessed quantitatively for different combinations of SynX methodological choices, including the number of synergies and categories of variability in unmeasured and residual synergy vector weights across trials. The two best methodological combinations were identified, one for analyzing experimental walking trials used for calibration and another for analyzing experimental walking trials not used for calibration or for predicting new walking motions computationally. Both methodological combinations consistently provided reliable and efficient estimates of unmeasured muscle excitations and activations, muscle forces, and joint moments across both subjects. This approach broadens the possibilities for EMG-driven calibration of muscle-tendon properties in personalized neuromusculoskeletal models and may eventually contribute to the design of personalized treatments for mobility impairments.

Unanswered questions about the glacier and climate history preceding the global Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) in the southern temperate latitudes remain. The Marine Isotope Stage (MIS) 3 is normally understood as a global interstadial period; nonetheless its climate was punctuated by conspicuous variability, and its signature has not been resolved beyond the polar realms. In this paper, we compile a 10Be depth profile, single grain infrared (IR) stimulated luminescence dating and 14C samples to derive a new glacier record for the principal outwash plain complex, deposited by the western Patagonian Ice Sheet (PIS) during the last glacial period (Llanquihue Glaciation) on the Isla de Chiloé, southern Chile (42∘ S). In this region, the Golfo de Corcovado Ice Lobe left a distinct geomorphic and stratigraphic imprint, suitable for reconstructing former ice dynamics and timing of past climate change. Our data indicate that maximum glaciation occurred by 57.8±4.7 ka without reaching the Pacific Ocean coast. Ice readavanced and buttressed against the eastern side of the Cordillera de la Costa again by 26.0±2.9 ka. Our data further support the notion of a large ice extent during parts of the MIS 3 in Patagonia and New Zealand but appear to contradict near contemporaneous interstadial evidence in the southern midlatitudes, including Chiloé. We propose that the PIS expanded to its full-glacial Llanquihue moraines, recording a rapid response of southern mountain glaciers to the millennial-scale climate stadials that punctuated the MIS 3 at the poles and elsewhere.

Abstract The prognosis for high-grade glioma (HGG) remains dismal and the extent of resection correlates with overall survival and progression free disease. Epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) is a biomarker heterogeneously expressed in HGG. We assessed the feasibility of detecting HGG using near-infrared fluorescent antibody targeting EGFR. Mice bearing orthotopic HGG xenografts with modest EGFR expression were imaged in vivo after systemic panitumumab-IRDye800 injection to assess its tumor-specific uptake macroscopically over 14 days, and microscopically ex vivo. EGFR immunohistochemical staining of 59 tumor specimens from 35 HGG patients was scored by pathologists and expression levels were compared to that of mouse xenografts. Intratumoral distribution of panitumumab-IRDye800 correlated with near-infrared fluorescence and EGFR expression. Fluorescence distinguished tumor cells with 90% specificity and 82.5% sensitivity. Target-to-background ratios peaked at 14 h post panitumumab-IRDye800 infusion, reaching 19.5 in vivo and 7.6 ex vivo, respectively. Equivalent or higher EGFR protein expression compared to the mouse xenografts was present in 77.1% HGG patients. Age, combined with IDH-wildtype cerebral tumor, was predictive of greater EGFR protein expression in human tumors. Tumor specific uptake of panitumumab-IRDye800 provided remarkable contrast and a flexible imaging window for fluorescence-guided identification of HGGs despite modest EGFR expression.

El desarrollo de la sociedad digital del siglo XXI viene de la mano de la incorporación de diferentes tecnologías. En el ámbito educativo una de estas es la Realidad Aumentada, más presente en la sociedad, comenzando a usarse en contextos educativos. El objetivo se centra en conocer la percepción que tienen los docentes en formación de la Educación Secundaria Obligatoria (ESO) sobre el uso de la Realidad Aumentada en esta etapa. Trata de un estudio cuantitativo de corte descriptivo y correlacional. Participaron 477 estudiantes del Máster de Formación de Profesorado de la Universidad de Córdoba. El estudio refleja que los profesores en formación consideran que el uso de la Realidad Aumentada en la enseñanza permitirá promover el trabajo colaborativo y cooperativo, y favorecerá la creatividad en los estudiantes. Como conclusión, la variable género refleja diferencias en torno a la visión del empleo de la Realidad Aumentada en el aula a favor de las mujeres.

The ability of aerial manipulation robots to reach and operate in high altitude workspaces may result of interest in a wide variety of applications and scenarios that nowadays cannot be accessed easily by human operators. Consider for example the installation of sensors in polluted areas, the insulation of leaks in pipe structures, or the corrosion repair in power lines and wind turbines. This paper describes the application of a human-like dual arm aerial manipulator for the inspection of pipe structures, typical of chemical plants, involving the installation and retrieval of sensor devices. The goal is to reduce the time, cost, and risk with respect to conventional solutions conducted by human workers. Two configurations of the aerial robot are considered and compared: the standard, in which the arms are installed at the base of the multirotor, and the long reach configuration in passive pendulum, which extends the effective workspace of the manipulator and increases safety during the operation on flight. The kinematic and dynamic models of both configurations are derived, proposing a unified notation for the equations of motion, and a force/position control scheme that relies on the servo controller and the mechanical joint compliance. The paper also describes a simulation framework used for validating the execution of the aerial manipulation task before the realization of the real experiments, which contributes to reducing the probability of failure. The potential application of the standard and long reach configurations is evaluated in two sensor installation tasks carried out in an indoor testbed.

Abstract Background Adverse childhood experiences (ACE) have a great impact on mental health outcomes of adults. However, little is known whether ACE may act as modulators of the mental health of health professionals caring for patients with COVID‐19. Methods Data were collected through an online cross‐sectional survey administered to health professionals in Lima (Peru) between May and July 2020. The survey included standardized self‐assessment instruments for anxiety, depression, acute stress (AS) and history of ACE. Results A total of 542 health professionals completed the survey. Caring for patients with COVID‐19 was significantly associated with depression and anxiety and when caring for patients with COVID‐19 was combined with a history of early sexual abuse, its effect on the risk of anxiety increased (OR = 7.71, p = .010). Mental health problems were associated with female gender in almost all the analyses and with the majority of ACEs. Conclusions Health workers in the context of the COVID‐19 pandemic presented a high risk of mental health disorders. Antecedents of sexual abuse acted as a potentiating factor of anxiety in professionals providing COVID‐19 care. These findings suggest that the burden of ACE modulates mental health problems in health professionals during the pandemic.

Background: Neuroblastoma is a paediatric tumour originated from sympathoadrenal precursors and characterized by its heterogeneity and poor outcome in advanced stages. Intra-tumoral cellular heterogeneity has emerged as an important feature in neuroblastoma, with a potential major impact on tumour aggressiveness and response to therapy. CD44 is an adhesion protein involved in tumour progression, metastasis and stemness in different cancers; however, there has been controversies about the significance of CD44 expression in neuroblastoma and its relationship with tumour progression. Methods: We have performed transcriptomic analysis on patient tumour samples studying the outcome of patients with high CD44 expression. Adhesion, invasion and proliferation assays were performed in sorted CD44high neuroblastoma cells. Tumoursphere cultures have been used to enrich in undifferentiated stem-like cells and to asses self-renewal and differentiation potential. We have finally performed in vivo tumorigenic assays on cell line-derived or Patient-derived xenografts. Findings: We show that high CD44 expression is associated with low survival in high-grade human neuroblastoma, independently of MYCN amplification. CD44 is expressed in a cell population with neural crest stem-like features, and with the capacity to generate multipotent, undifferentiated tumourspheres in culture. These cells are more invasive and proliferative in vitro. CD44 positive cells obtained from tumours are more tumorigenic and metastatic, giving rise to aggressive neuroblastic tumours at high frequency upon transplantation. Interpretation: We describe an unexpected intra-tumoural heterogeneity within cellular entities expressing CD44 in neuroblastoma, and propose that CD44 has a role in neural crest stem-like undifferentiated cells, which can contribute to tumorigenesis and malignancy in this type of cancer. ABSTRACT A growing body of data suggests that the microbiome of a species can vary considerably from individual to individual, but the reasons for this variation—and the consequences for the ecology of these communities—remain only partially explained. In mammals, the emerging picture is that the metabolic state and immune system status of the host affect the composition of the microbiome, but quantitative ecological microbiome studies are challenging to perform in higher organisms. Here, we show that these phenomena can be quantitatively analyzed in the tractable nematode host Caenorhabditis elegans. Mutants in innate immunity, in particular the DAF-2/insulin growth factor (IGF) pathway, are shown to contain a microbiome that differs from that of wild-type nematodes. We analyzed the underlying basis of these differences from the perspective of community ecology by comparing experimental observations to the predictions of a neutral sampling model and concluded that fundamental differences in microbiome ecology underlie the observed differences in microbiome composition. We tested this hypothesis by introducing a minor perturbation into the colonization conditions, allowing us to assess stability of communities in different host strains. Our results show that altering host immunity changes the importance of interspecies interactions within the microbiome, resulting in differences in community composition and stability that emerge from these differences in host-microbe ecology. IMPORTANCE Here, we used a Caenorhabditis elegans microbiome model to demonstrate how genetic differences in innate immunity alter microbiome composition, diversity, and stability by changing the ecological processes that shape these communities. These results provide insight into the role of host genetics in controlling the ecology of the host-associated microbiota, resulting in differences in community composition, successional trajectories, and response to perturbation.

The promising applications of metal-organic frameworks (MOF) can be widened if these materials were additive manufactured to develop three-dimensional (3D) MOF architectures. In this work, iron-based MOF/silicon carbide (SiC) composite aqueous inks with a high solids content (64 ​wt%) are printed into 3D periodic lattices by a direct ink writing technique (Robocasting). MOF appear fully integrated within the cellular architectures, which display total porosities in the range of 74–78% depending on the scaffold design. The 3D MOF-Fe/SiC structures exhibit good mechanical strength (~4.6 ​MPa) and a semiconductor-like behaviour. The structures show a remarkable response in the hydroxylation of phenol with hydrogen peroxide, demonstrating high selectivity and yield to dihydroxybenzene species.

Shadowing as an approach for getting first-hand learning experiences and in gathering information about workplace practices and performances has been widely used in different fields. In this case study, we analyze and propose a shadowing strategy that uses ethnographic methods for experiential learning that serves the purpose of gaining experience by learning from and playing the same role as the person being shadowed. The experiential learning process has been performed by shadowing a professor in a graduate course in Carnegie Mellon University. The use of ethnographic methods in shadowing has allowed the learner (the shadower), to elicit the knowledge and learn while the person being shadowed performs as teacher and mentor. The uniqueness of the shadowing methodology that we propose and use in this experience is the combination of experiential learning and ethnographic research methods for an in-depth analysis of the learning experience. Another uniqueness is that shadowing is based on interactions between the shadower and shadowee as peers, both being university professors in the field of computer science, where the shadowee acts as mentor. We propose this approach of faculty shadowing as a method for faculty development in higher education pedagogy.

Pollution from the international dye industry continues to be a global problem. Biotechnology offers new options, including a closer look at select wood decay fungi to replace inorganic dyes. The pigments produced by a small group of soft rotting fungi are generally naphthoquinonic and remarkably stable. From this group, the dramada crystals, produced by Scytalidium cuboideum, are of particular interest. To test the application of this pigment as a natural colorant of cellulosic pulps, four different bleached pulps were selected (one hardwood, three softwood), in three different mediums (acetone, ethanol, and DI water). The pigment generated a significant change of color, but there was no significant difference in color intensity based on the solvent carrier. These preliminary results are promising as they open the door for further exploration of applications of fungal pigments in the paper industry. Once these pigments can be reliably grown, they will offer a sustainable organic alternative to polluting inorganic dyestuffs and help reduce the toxic effluent released into the soil and waterways.

Gold shops in artisanal and small-scale gold mining communities represent major point sources of airborne mercury pollution. Concentrations of elemental mercury (Hg0) emitted by these shops can be determined using a portable atomic absorbance spectrometer (AAS) with Zeeman correction. These measured Hg0 concentrations can then be correlated to position as determined by a hand-held GPS unit, and the resulting data mapped using a Geographic Information System (GIS). A detailed method for obtaining and analyzing data collected near gold shops in Mazuko, Peru is provided. Maps generated using this method were employed to identify point sources of Hg0 contamination originating from gold shops in ASGM communities and were shared with local city managers to assist in urban planning. • A detailed method is provided to collect and process data, ultimately generating a map that allows for the screening of a community to identify point sources of Hg0 contamination. • Raw data is provided, as well as a video detailing data processing and mapping using a common spreadsheet program and an open-source GIS. • The generated map can be used for determining areas where people may be exposed to elevated Hg0 concentrations and/or occupational mercury vapor exposure, targeted enforcement, or outreach to limit Hg0 pollution.

Titanium dioxide (TD) and graphene oxide (GO) were synthesized by sol-gel and improved Hummers method, respectively. This study shows the results of the incorporation through four different conditions (sol-gel, sol-gel and ultrasonic, annealed, and UV radiation, C1 to C4, respectively). It was observed that a homogeneous incorporation of TD on sheets of GO was obtained satisfactorily. The composites of TiO2/GO were characterized using different techniques such as X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), Raman spectroscopy, and infrared spectroscopy (IR). The photocatalytic activity of the composites was determined from the degradation of the dye azo tartrazine using UV and solar radiation. The best incorporation of TD nanoparticles on GO was obtained with condition C3 (thermal incorporation method) at a temperature of 65°C. This shows a uniformity in the size and shape of the TD as well as an excellent adherence to the sheet of GO. This addition is accomplished by ionic bonding in the presence of electrostatic Coulomb forces. The C3 composite degraded the tartrazine dye using UV radiation and sunlight. With the latter, the degradation time was three times faster than using UV light.

In the United States, persistence for women and ethnic minorities in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) careers is strongly impacted by affective factors such as science identity, agency, and sense of belonging. Policies aimed at increasing the diversity of the national STEM student population and workforce have recently focused on fostering inclusive learning environments that can positively impact the experiences of underrepresented minorities (URMs) in STEM, thus increasing their retention. While research on inclusion in STEM in higher education is relatively new, inclusion research has a rich history in several other disciplines. These fields have developed theoretical frameworks and validated instruments to conceptualize and assess inclusion. Self-determination theory (SDT) is a well-established theoretical framework in educational psychology that states that ones’ internal motivation is strongly correlated with the satisfaction of three specific psychological needs: autonomy, competency, and relatedness. In this paper, we introduce SDT and discuss how it relates to inclusion and to ongoing efforts to increase retention of STEM URM students in higher education environments. We argue that grounding inclusion initiatives in the SDT framework increases our understanding of the mechanisms mediating their impact, thus facilitating their reproducibility and generalizability. Finally, we describe how this theoretical framework has been adapted by the field of Industrial and Organizational Psychology to define and assess inclusion in the workplace as an example of how STEM education researchers can use this framework to promote and assess inclusion in their fields.

In this work, a methodology is proposed for the improvement of the parameter estimation effciency of a non-linear manoeuvring model of a torpedo shaped unmanned underwater vehicle. For this purpose, data from different tests, were carried out with the aforementioned vehicle at the facilities of the Canal de Experiencias Hidrodinámicas del Pardo, Madrid. In the proposed methodology, the following aspects are taken into account in order to improve the parameter estimation effciency: selection of the sampling period, smoothing of the data acquired in the tests considering a compromise between variance and bias of the smoothing filter to be applied, analysis of the classical linear regression model proposed in each trial, from the statistical point of view for the estimation of the parameters. Improvements in effciency are verified by graphical and statistical methods. In addition, a modification of the conventional LOS method is proposed which provides satisfactory results in the presence of ocean currents by performing a simple procedure.

Luego de más de 25 años de historia el sistema iberoamericano atraviesa un proceso de consolidación institucional signado por la ininterrumpida concreción de cumbres políticas, la proliferación de organismos especializados y la ejecución de programas específicos de cooperación. No obstante ello, un asunto de reconocida trascendencia internacional y regional como es la seguridad no ha recibido aún un tratamiento comprehensivo y continuado, limitándose su recepción a iniciativas de alcance parcial o declaraciones no vinculantes. A pesar de las perennes diferencias de contexto estratégico, esquemas subregionales de cooperación y prioridades de agenda a ambos lados del Atlántico, la gestión de la seguridad en tanto política pública representa un necesario eje de trabajo para los Estados iberoamericanos. En consecuencia, el presente documento tiene por objeto fundamentar la importancia y pertinencia temporal de su inclusión en los planes de acción del sistema, además de esbozar posibles líneas de cooperación técnica en el tema.

Understanding how microbes adapt to their host is an enduring problem in microbiome ecology, and understanding the microbial traits that allow colonization of the host and increase adaptation to the host environment is of particular interest. In this study, Robinson and colleagues use experimental evolution to demonstrate adaptation of a commensal bacterium to its zebrafish host and describe the changes in phenotype that emerge during this evolutionary process. These results provide insight into the evolutionary problem of host adaptation and demonstrate the utility of simple models for understanding host-microbiome dynamics.
