This study aimed to assess the socio-economic impact of sickle cell disease (SCD) on families of patients receiving care at the SCD clinic of Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital (AKTH) in Kano, Northwest Nigeria. The research adopted a descriptive cross-sectional approach, involving the participation of 273 individuals selected through a multi-stage sampling method. Data was gathered using semi-structured interviews and subjected to analysis using SPSS software. The study achieved a 100 % response rate, with 84 % of the participants being females. The average age of the participants was 35.1 ± 8.6 years, and a significant proportion (79.9 %) reported a monthly income of thirty thousand naira or less. The findings of the study revealed that SCD had a notable social impact, affecting 93.5 % of participants occasionally and 5.8 % most of the time. Furthermore, a substantial financial burden was experienced by 54.2 % of respondents most of the time and 45.1 % occasionally. The research also highlighted the significant influence of SCD on guardians' employment status, income levels, time spent in hospitals, medical expenditures, and overall quality of life. These findings underscore the considerable social and financial challenges faced by guardians of SCD patients. Study results supports prioritizing affordable healthcare access for families affected by SCD to alleviate the burdens they face.

Hydrogen is an alternative fuel due to its environmental friendliness and abundance. Hydrogen can be produced through water-splitting technique, in which the Oxygen (O2) and Hydrogen (H2) are separated. Water electrolysis is one of many causes of water-splitting that effectively results H2 with high purity. One drawback of electrolysis is the low efficiency. In this study, a rice straw natural surfactant was utilized to improve the efficiency. Rice straw with the volume of 5 ml, 10 ml, dan 15 ml were added to the electrolyte solution. This study shows the rice straw based natural surfactant contains hydrophilic and hydrophobic sides. Both sides capable to reduce the surface tension of the solution which destabilizes water molecules. The aromatic magnetic field of rice straw surfactant homogenizes the water net dipole moment due to the diamagnetism of water. These contributes towards the weakened hydrogen bond of the water in the solution. The synergy between hydrophobic and hydrophilic sides is potent to alter hydrogen production rate through intrinsic magnetism.

Abstract Limited data exist on viral hepatitis among migrant populations. This study investigated the prevalence of current hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection and lifetime hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection among Qatar's migrant craft and manual workers (CMWs), constituting 60% of the country's population. Sera collected during a nationwide COVID-19 population-based cross-sectional survey on CMWs between July 26 and September 9, 2020, underwent testing for HBsAg and HCV antibodies. Reactive samples underwent confirmatory testing, and logistic regression analyses were employed to explore associations with HBV and HCV infections. Among 2528 specimens tested for HBV infection, 15 were reactive, with 8 subsequently confirmed positive. Three samples lacked sufficient sera for confirmatory testing but were included in the analysis through multiple imputations. Prevalence of current HBV infection was 0.4% (95% CI 0.2–0.7%). Educational attainment and occupation were significantly associated with current HBV infection. For HCV infection, out of 2607 specimens tested, 46 were reactive, and 23 were subsequently confirmed positive. Prevalence of lifetime HCV infection was 0.8% (95% CI 0.5–1.2%). Egyptians exhibited the highest prevalence at 6.5% (95% CI 3.1–13.1%), followed by Pakistanis at 3.1% (95% CI 1.1–8.0%). Nationality, geographic location, and occupation were significantly associated with lifetime HCV infection. HBV infection is relatively low among CMWs, while HCV infection falls within the intermediate range, both compared to global and regional levels.

Abstract Strong magnetoelectric effects in single-phase two-dimensional (2D) materials are extremely rare in nature. Here by first-principles calculations, we find a strong magnetoelectric coupling in polar stacking bilayer Hf2S that allows the reversal of net magnetic moments with the reversal of electric dipoles. Further analysis shows that such strong magnetoelectric effects benefit from the Stoner instability of surface Hf atoms triggered by polar stacking. Moreover, an unexpectedly large out-of-plane electric polarization (which is at least two times larger than that of bilayer BN) survives in the material, despite its metallicity. The large electric polarization is ascribed to the delocalized interlayer electrons which generally present in layered electride materials. It is quite interesting that large electric polarization, metallicity and magnetism coexist in one single-phase material. Our findings reveal rich physical phenomena to be explored in 2D stacking multiferroics and suggest an alternative way of searching for strong magnetoelectric materials with ultrathin thickness.

Arsenic contamination poses a severe health threat in the semi-arid region of North-eastern Nigeria, particularly in Monguno town, Borno State. This study rigorously evaluated groundwater arsenic concentrations in 102 samples from various boreholes across Upper, Middle, and Lower aquifers of the Chad Formation, utilizing the Palintest Digital Arsenator Test Kit. To ensure precision, each water sample underwent analysis twice, totaling 204 tested and analyzed samples. Furthermore, the geographical coordinates of the 102 boreholes were meticulously mapped using QGIS (Quantum Geographic Information System), providing a visual representation and analysis of the arsenic presence. Findings revealed that only 3 samples met the WHO recommended threshold, 56 fell within the 10-50 µg/L range, signifying a low risk, while 43 samples exceeded 50 µg/L, breaching safety limits. Prolonged exposure to high arsenic levels can lead to severe health implications. A comprehensive human health risk assessment considered parameters such as Average Daily Dose (ADD), Hazard Quotient (HQ), and Cancer Risk (CR). Notably, for 43 water sources with arsenic concentrations exceeding 50 µg/L, Hazard Quotient (HQ) values ranged from 1.2 to 5.3, indicating potential health risks. These elevated values underscore potential carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic hazards in Monguno. A direct linear relationship was observed between HQ and arsenic concentrations across all samples, reinforcing the correlation. Despite the absence of specific reference values for Monguno, the analogous trend in North Central Nigeria reinforces this observation. Urgent collaborative efforts are imperative for intervention and remediation, emphasizing the need for cooperation between government agencies, non-governmental organizations, research institutions, and the local community. Continuous research and monitoring are vital to understanding arsenic sources and distribution, ensuring the long-term effectiveness of remediation measures, and securing safe drinking water access for the community.

Background: Acetabular fracture therapy, being complicated, is generally treated by non-operative methods due to a lack of surgeons’ expertise in pelvis surgery. The surgical exposure and reduction of acetabular fractures may become more direct and practical with the altered technique since it is closer to the acetabular quadrilateral plate. This study aimed to determine the efficacy of a single anterior illio-inguinal approach for the management of a Bi-columnar acetabulum fracture. Methods: Sixty patients, fulfilling the selection criteria were selected for descriptive case series from Orthopedic Surgery Department at Lahore General Hospital, from 02-12-2020 to 02-06-2021. After informed consent, surgery was performed on all patients under general anesthesia. Patients were followed-up and evaluated for efficacy in OPD after 12 weeks of surgery with a Harris hip score. All demographic and other information was recorded on a Proforma. SPSS 22 was used to assess data. Post-stratification, efficacy was compared by using chi-square, p-value ≤0.05 was considered significant. Results: Out of 60 patients, 45(75 %) were male, whereas 15(25%) were female (Mean age 52.71±10.50yrs). The Mean of duration fracture (in days) and Harris score are 11.03±5.29 and 2.83±0.45 respectively. The efficacy concerning lateral side was 60% for left side and 26.7% for right side. Efficacy was higher in less than 10 days old fractures at 55.0% while after 10 days it was 31.7%. We found that the percentage of efficacy was 86.7%. Conclusion: The current study concluded that the anterior illio-inguinal approach is highly effective (p=0.001) in the management of acetabular fractures. Introduction The concept of digital psychiatry, encompassing technologies such as mental health apps, Virtual Reality (VR), Artificial Intelligence (AI), and telepsychiatry, emerges as a potential solution to bridge the existing gaps in the mental health system of Pakistan. However, one of the major barriers to the implementation of these technologies is hesitancy to adopt digital tools by psychiatrists. Objectives This study aims to explore the current understanding of digital psychiatry, the barriers faced by psychiatrists in its’ widespread implementation, and their willingness to adopt these services in clinical practice. Methods This cross-sectional study surveyed psychiatrists’ knowledge, attitudes, and practices on digital psychiatry from 39 public hospitals across Pakistan using an online validated questionnaire from January to July 2023. Participants included psychiatry residents, fellows, and consultants practicing in Pakistan. Responses were analyzed with Raosoft software, Quirkos, and SPSS 26 using thematic analysis and correlation. Results A total of 200 participants responded to the questionnaire, primarily in the age range of 20-30 years (56%). The gender distribution was 55% male (N = 111) and 45% female (N = 89). Among the professional roles, 23% were consultants, 7% were registrars, 54% were psychiatry residents, and 17% were medical officers. Respondents came from both rural (N = 148, 74%) and urban (N = 52, 26%) practice settings. Regarding telepsychiatry, 46% strongly agreed that they are familiar with telepsychiatry, while 58% agreed that telepsychiatry can save time and money. Additionally, 22% strongly agreed that it’s a viable approach for patient care. Concerning perspectives on Artificial Intelligence (AI) in digital psychiatry readiness, only 40% of participants had received AI training. However, 55% expressed interest in collaborating with international centers on AI-related projects. In terms of mental health apps, 62% of respondents reported limited familiarity with them. Nevertheless, 65% believed that these apps could potentially save time and money for psychiatric health systems. Lastly, concerning Virtual Reality (VR) in psychiatric care, 57% of participants were familiar with VR technology, but only 43% were acquainted with its applications in psychiatry. Notably, 71% did not view VR as a viable replacement for in-person psychiatric management. Conclusions This is the first study conducted on understanding digital psychiatry in Pakistan’s healthcare system, which revealed multiple challenges to digital health competency among psychiatrists. This emphasizes on the need for formal training and funding towards resources to overcome obstacles in utilizing mental health technologies. Disclosure of Interest None Declared

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate utilization, range of mobility at the end of the follow-up, DASH scores, and the necessity for additional operations. METHODOLOGY: Twelve patients with acute or chronic elbow dislocation from Jan 2022 to March 2023 were selected for study after written consent. Sampling was done with a non-probability sampling technique. Infection and age less than 20 & more than 70 years were exclusion criteria. RESULTS: Average extension-flexion arcs at the final follow-up were 21.84-108.57 degrees, while pronation-supination motion under normal level was 10.2-120 degrees. 91.66 percent of patients achieved > 100-degree arcs of both flexion-extension. The average DASH score was 17.99. CONCLUSION: Modified IJS is an affordable method of elbow stabilization with an early range of motion, and concentric reduction is modified IJS. It is simple to use and delivers good functional results.

Isolated post-capillary pulmonary hypertension (Ipc-PH) occurs due to left heart failure, which contributes to 1 out of every 9 deaths in the United States. In some patients, through unknown mechanisms, Ipc-PH transitions to combined pre-/post-capillary PH (Cpc-PH) and is associated with a dramatic increase in mortality. Altered mechanical forces and subsequent biological signaling in the pulmonary vascular bed likely contribute to the transition from Ipc-PH to Cpc-PH. However, even in a healthy pulmonary circulation, the mechanical forces in the smallest vessels (the arterioles, capillary bed, and venules) have not been quantitatively defined. This study is the first to examine this question via a computational fluid dynamics model of the human pulmonary arteries, arterioles, venules, and veins. Using this model, we predict temporal and spatial dynamics of cyclic stretch and wall shear stress with healthy and diseased hemodynamics. In the normotensive case for large vessels, numerical simulations show that large arteries have higher pressure and flow than large veins, as well as more pronounced changes in area throughout the cardiac cycle. In the microvasculature, shear stress increases and cyclic stretch decreases as vessel radius decreases. When we impose an increase in left atrial pressure to simulate Ipc-PH, shear stress decreases and cyclic stretch increases as compared to the healthy case. Overall, this model predicts pressure, flow, shear stress, and cyclic stretch that providing a way to analyze and investigate hypotheses related to disease progression in the pulmonary circulation.

Abstract Background Limited data exists on herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) and type 2 (HSV-2) infections in migrant populations. This study investigated HSV-1 and HSV-2 seroprevalences and associations among craft and manual workers (CMWs) in Qatar who constitute 60% of Qatar’s population. Methods A national population-based cross-sectional seroprevalence survey was conducted on the CMW population, all men, between July 26 and September 9, 2020. 2,612 sera were tested for anti-HSV-1 IgG antibodies using HerpeSelect 1 ELISA IgG kits and for anti-HSV-2 IgG antibodies using HerpeSelect 2 ELISA IgG kits (Focus Diagnostics, USA). Univariable and multivariable logistic regression analyses were conducted to identify associations with HSV-1 and HSV-2 infections. Results Serological testing identified 2,171 sera as positive, 403 as negative, and 38 as equivocal for HSV-1 antibodies, and 300 sera as positive, 2,250 as negative, and 62 as equivocal for HSV-2 antibodies. HSV-1 and HSV-2 seroprevalences among CMWs were estimated at 84.2% (95% CI 82.8–85.6%) and 11.4% (95% CI 10.1–12.6%), respectively. HSV-1 infection was associated with nationality, educational attainment, and occupation. HSV-2 infection was associated with age, nationality, and educational attainment. Conclusions Over 80% of CMWs are infected with HSV-1 and over 10% are infected with HSV-2. The findings highlight the need for sexual health programs to tackle sexually transmitted infections among the CMW population.

The objective of this study was to obtain a seed-origin onion (Allium cepa L.) that was able to grow in the tropical riparian soil. Research designed with non-experimental. Two cultivars were studied, namely Sanren and Lokananta. Onion seeds were planted directly without transplanting, there were three plots (4 m x 1.6 m x 0.3 m) and three germination testplot (1 m x 1.6 m x 0.3 m). Soil tillage, spacing/ population, fertilization, plant maintenance and pest-diseases control in accordance with the recommendations. Research result obtained Sanren had higher germination (94.40%) and vigor index (60.60) then Lokananta. The growth of two onion cultivars showed good performance because there was no transplanting. Almost all the the variables for seedlings, vegetative organs and bulbs were significantly different between two cultivars. From the boxplot test, it was found that the data were of symmetry for Sanren (number stems, dry weight of leaves, and dry weight of bulb), and the Lokananta cultivar (vigor index, number of stems, number of bulbs, plant height and leaf dry weight). There was a significant correlation for Sanren (plant height with bulbs weight and number of roots), and Lokananta cultivars (number of roots with number of stems and leaf dry weight). Fresh bulbs weight per clump from Sanren (46.71 g) and Lokananta (17.84 g).

A very uncommon benign synovial membrane tumor is called lipoma arborescens. It often affects a single articulation, the knee. Despite a conventional imaging assessment, the lesion’s histological analysis is still required for the ultimate diagnosis. A 15-year-old boy attended the outpatient clinic of the Lahore General Hospital Lahore, Pakistan with pain and swelling in his left knee that had been steadily worsening over the previous 4 years. There were no concomitant prodromal symptoms, and the swelling was soft and non-tender while also inhibiting knee flexion. Soft tissue shadows were observed on radiographs. A large amount of subarticular erosion in the nearby tibial and femoral condyle was caused by the frond-like proliferation of fatty synovium, according to magnetic resonance imaging. Only the left knee joint showed focused areas of unusually elevated radionuclide uptake during the Technetium (Tc99m) bone scan. After an open synovectomy, the specimen underwent histological analysis, which revealed villiform fatty tissue, a hallmark of Lipoma arborescens coated by somewhat thicker synovium. Although infrequent, open synovectomy is currently the preferred course of treatment for lipoma arborescens, which should be taken into account when making a differential diagnosis of knee diseases. Approximately 3 months after surgery, the patient underwent his most recent follow-up and was asymptomatic with a small amount of joint effusion.

Chaya leaves (Cnidoscolus aconitifolius (Mill.) I.M. Johnst.) are leafy vegetables that contain many vitamins and minerals. Information about the intensification of chaya cultivation is still rare. Chaya propagated by stem cuttings. The maturity level of stem cuttings and planting media were expected to affect the success of plant propagation. This study aims to determine the maturity level of cuttings material that can grow well and deter-mine the type of media that can support the growth of chaya propagation. This research has been carried out from July to October 2022 in an off-campus experimental outdoor facility located in Inderalaya, South Suma-tra. This study was conducted using a randomized block design with 2 factors. The first factor was the level of maturity of stem cuttings material (upper, middle, and basal), and the second factor was the type of growing medium (control, chicken manure, and cow manure). The results showed that the use of cuttings from the mid-dle and basal has a better percentage of growth ability than the upper cuttings. Chaya plants used basal stem cuttings exhibited slower shoot grow but produced higher number of leaves, greater leaf area, canopy area, and biomass. The use of cow manure in a mixture of growing medium gave the best results on growth of chaya plants.

In this work we use complex Lagrangian technique to obtain Noether-like operators and the associated conserved quantities of an Euler-Lagrange (EL) system. We show that the three new conserved quantities namely, Noether conserved quantity, Lie conserved quantity and Mei conserved quantity reported by Fang et al. [1] for an EL-system and even more in numbers by Nucci [2] can also be obtained via complex variational formalism. Generally, a linear system of EL-equations possesses maximum 8-dimensional algebra of Noether symmetries and Noether's theorem yields related 8-first integrals. However, our methodology produces 10 Noether-like operators and 10 corresponding invariant quantities for the underlying system of equations. Among those ten first integrals, three (as named above) are reminiscent to those found in [1]. In addition, from the remaining list of conserved quantities several are similar to those reported in [2]. Moreover, the current study presents an alternative approach to compute invariant quantities of EL-systems and leads to interesting and fascinating results.

Primary mesenteric angiosarcoma is a rare soft tissue tumour accounting for 1%–2% of soft tissue tumours. Because of the ubiquity of blood vessels and lymphatics, it can occur anywhere with a poor prognosis. To the best extent of our literature search, this type of tumour is sparsely reported in our environment; we hereby report a case of primary mesenteric angiosarcoma in a 32-year-old man who presented with acute abdomen, intraperitoneal haemorrhage, and shock. Abdominal ultrasound revealed intraperitoneal collection, and intraoperative findings revealed haemoperitoneum 1.5l with vascular cystic tumour at the mesentery close to the duodenojejunal junction. Histopathological examination of the resected specimen revealed angiosarcoma. The patient was seen last at follow-up in early 2022.

Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) models are emerging tools for assisting in diagnostic assessment of cardiovascular disease. Recent advances in image segmentation have made subject-specific modelling of the cardiovascular system a feasible task, which is particularly important in the case of pulmonary hypertension, requiring a combination of invasive and non-invasive procedures for diagnosis. Uncertainty in image segmentation propagates to CFD model predictions, making the quantification of segmentation-induced uncertainty crucial for subject-specific models. This study quantifies the variability of one-dimensional CFD predictions by propagating the uncertainty of network geometry and connectivity to blood pressure and flow predictions. We analyse multiple segmentations of a single, excised mouse lung using different pre-segmentation parameters. A custom algorithm extracts vessel length, vessel radii and network connectivity for each segmented pulmonary network. Probability density functions are computed for vessel radius and length and then sampled to propagate uncertainties to haemodynamic predictions in a fixed network. In addition, we compute the uncertainty of model predictions to changes in network size and connectivity. Results show that variation in network connectivity is a larger contributor to haemodynamic uncertainty than vessel radius and length.

Modification of bitumen has been used to improve the properties of bitumen and bituminous mixes to mitigate the problems of bitumen at extreme and quiescent conditions. It also provides better bitumen at extreme temperatures as well as saving construction cost. In this study, polycarbonate from disposed compact discs was used as modifier for bitumen with the aim of improving its consistency properties. To establish the presence of polycarbonate in the recycled compact discs, Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectra analysis was conducted on the waste compact discs. The FTIR results when compared with Infrared Spectroscopy Absorption Table (ISAT), revealed transmittance peaks described by the wave numbers 764-2967cm-1 (C-H), 1770cm-1 (C=O), 1599cm-1 (C=C), 1502cm-1 (C-C) and 1010-1020cm-1 (C-O-C). These peaks confirmed the compact discs as predominantly made up of polycarbonate. Comparative FTIR analysis carried out on the pure and modified bitumen revealed that there is appearance of additional new peaks with wave numbers 2371-2091cm-1 for C-H aromatic bending, 848-2110cm-1 for C=C aromatic bending and 1685-1700cm-1 for C-C aromatic stretching in the spectra of polycarbonate modified bitumen samples, indicating that the polycarbonate has undergone chemical interactions with the bitumen. Such interaction usually results in changes to the molecular structure of the bitumen. Also, comparative analysis carried out on some properties of pure and modified bitumen showed that the modifier decreases the penetration and ductility of bitumen but increases its specific gravity and softening point. These performance evaluation results indicate the ability of polycarbonate in improving the temperature susceptibility and rutting resistance of bitumen.

Climate change poses one of the most significant modern threats to overall human health,especially for vulnerable populations including persons living with HIV (PLWH). In this perspective, we specifically explore the concept of immune resilience in human health and how climate change phenomena - including extreme weather events, food insecurity, pollution, and emerging diseases - may exacerbate immune dysfunction and comorbidities faced by PLWH and hinder access to HIV treatment and prevention services. Multidisciplinary, collaborative efforts are urgently needed to quantify these impacts, develop mitigation strategies, and strengthen policies and funding to bolster immune resilience for PLWH in the face of accelerating climate change. The fifth-generation (5G) of networks is being deployed to provide a wide range of new services and to manage the accelerated traffic load of the existing networks. In the present-day networks, data has become more noteworthy than ever to infer about the traffic load and existing network infrastructure to minimize the cost of new 5G deployments. Identifying the region of highest traffic density in megabyte (MB) per $\text {km}^{2}$ has an important implication in minimizing the cost per bit for the mobile network operators (MNOs). In this study, we propose a base station (BS) clustering framework based on unsupervised learning to identify the target area known as the highest traffic cluster (HTC) for 5G deployments. We propose a novel approach assisted by real data to determine the appropriate number of clusters $k$ and to identify the HTC. The algorithm, named as NetClustering, determines the HTC and appropriate value of $k$ by fulfilling MNO’s requirements on the highest traffic density $\text {MB/km}^{2}$ and the target deployment area in $\text {km}^{2}$ . To compare the appropriate value of $k$ and other performance parameters, we use the Elbow heuristic as a benchmark. The simulation results show that the proposed algorithm fulfills the MNO’s requirements on the target deployment area in $\text {km}^{2}$ and highest traffic density $\text {MB/km}^{2}$ with significant cost savings and achieves higher network utilization compared to the Elbow heuristic. In brief, the proposed algorithm provides a more meaningful interpretation of the underlying data in the context of clustering performed for network planning.

Agronomic constraints for vegetable cultivation in riparian wetlands are low soil quality and shallow water table conditions. This study aims to identify the effect of biochar application and shallow water table on proline accumulation and plant growth of bean leaf (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) at the generative stage. This study was carried out from April to August 2018 in factorial randomized block design. The first factor was doses of biochar (0, 1, and 2 kg.m-2), and the second was shallow water table condition (20 cm and 10 cm below the soil surface) given in the generative stage. The results showed that biochar application and the shallow water table significantly affected leaf parameters; proline accumulation and increases in the sucrose levels occurred on the leaves. Proline content increased started at 3 days after treatment (DAT) and decreased at 6 DAT until recovery day (7 DAT). The biochar application of 2 kg.m-2 provided good aeration in the soil, which enhanced the bean's ability to survive under excess water. Proline accumulation is one of the adaptation mechanisms of beans to abiotic stress in shallow water table conditions.

Introduction: The most severe and least common side effects of shoulder dislocations are brachial plexus injury. Patients generally approach with a shoulder in abduction and external rotation, a behavior that orthopedic surgeons are accustomed to seeing in patients with an anterior type of shoulder dislocation. There are different viewpoints on whether surgery should be attempted to treat these old injuries with BPI and, if so, at what time. Material and Method: We had a 25-year male old patient who was admitted through an outdoor clinic with a ‘neglected locked anterior dislocation’ that had been unrecognized for the last two months. After consent and fitness, he was managed with an open reduction as well as the Latarjet technique, followed by neurotization for BPI upper trunk after four months had passed with no improvement. Result: The patient achieved 90 degrees of abduction and forward flexion in the 4th month of follow-up neurotization with a stable shoulder joint. Conclusion: We advocate that old stuck shoulder dislocations along with BPI be reduced right after using an open method, stabilized by using the Laterjet intervention if still unstable, and surgically handle the wounded nerves after four months of no sign of regeneration.

OBJECTIVE:Characteristic impedance (Zc) is an important component in the theory of hemodynamics. It is a commonly used metric of proximal arterial stiffness and pulse wave velocity. Calculated using simultaneously measured dynamic pressure and flow data, estimates of characteristic impedance can be obtained using methods based on frequency or time domain analysis. Applications of these methods under different physiological and pathological conditions in species with different body sizes and heart rates show that the two approaches do not always agree. In this study, we have investigated the discrepancies between frequency and time domain estimates accounting for uncertainties associated with experimental processes and physiological conditions. APPROACH:We have used published data measured in different species including humans, dogs, and mice to investigate: (a) the effects of time delay and signal noise in the pressure-flow data, (b) uncertainties about the blood flow conditions, (c) periodicity of the cardiac cycle versus the breathing cycle, on the frequency and time domain estimates of Zc, and (d) if discrepancies observed under different hemodynamic conditions can be eliminated. Main results and Significance: We have shown that the frequency and time domain estimates are not equally sensitive to certain characteristics of hemodynamic signals including phase lag between pressure and flow, signal to noise ratio and the end of systole retrograde flow. The discrepancies between two types of estimates are inherent due to their intrinsically different mathematical expressions and therefore it is impossible to define a criterion to resolve such discrepancies. Considering the interpretation and role of Zc as an important hemodynamic parameter, we suggest that the frequency and time domain estimates should be further assessed as two different hemodynamic parameters in a future study.
