Microwave heating of over-dense plasmas is routinely achieved in the stellarator TJ-K. In contrast to usually applied heating scenarios in tokamaks or stellarators, an operational regime is described where the heating occurs well below the electron cyclotron frequency but still well above the lower hybrid frequency. Microwave energy is deposited at the so-called O-resonance, accompanied by a small population of high-energy electrons with an energy up to 100 keV. These electrons are responsible for a significant toroidal net current and the occurrence of hard x-rays. Requirements for achieving this heating regime are described together with a novel scheme for plasma-electron acceleration.

The poloidal dependence of the zonal flow drive and the underlying Reynolds stress structure are studied at the stellarator experiment TJ-K by means of a poloidal Langmuir-probe array. This gives the unique possibility to study the locality of the Reynolds stress in a complex toroidal magnetic geometry. It is found that the Reynolds stress is not homogeneously distributed along the flux surface but has a strong poloidal asymmetry where it is concentrated on the outboard side with a maximum above the midplane. The average tilt of the turbulent structures is thereby reflected in the anisotropy of the bivariant velocity distribution. Using a conditional averaging technique the temporal dynamics reveal that the zonal flow drive is also maximal in this particular region. The results suggest an influence of the magnetic field line curvature, which controls the underlying plasma turbulence. The findings are a basis for further comparison with turbulence simulations in 3D geometry and demonstrate the need for a global characterisation of plasma turbulence.

Experiments on ASDEX Upgrade (AUG) in 2021 and 2022 have addressed a number of critical issues for ITER and EU DEMO. A major objective of the AUG programme is to shed light on the underlying physics of confinement, stability, and plasma exhaust in order to allow reliable extrapolation of results obtained on present day machines to these reactor-grade devices. Concerning pedestal physics, the mitigation of edge localised modes (ELMs) using resonant magnetic perturbations (RMPs) was found to be consistent with a reduction of the linear peeling-ballooning stability threshold due to the helical deformation of the plasma. Conversely, ELM suppression by RMPs is ascribed to an increased pedestal transport that keeps the plasma away from this boundary. Candidates for this increased transport are locally enhanced turbulence and a locked magnetic island in the pedestal. The enhanced D-alpha (EDA) and quasi-continuous exhaust (QCE) regimes have been established as promising ELM-free scenarios. Here, the pressure gradient at the foot of the H-mode pedestal is reduced by a quasi-coherent mode, consistent with violation of the high-n ballooning mode stability limit there. This is suggestive that the EDA and QCE regimes have a common underlying physics origin. In the area of transport physics, full radius models for both L- and H-modes have been developed. These models predict energy confinement in AUG better than the commonly used global scaling laws, representing a large step towards the goal of predictive capability. A new momentum transport analysis framework has been developed that provides access to the intrinsic torque in the plasma core. In the field of exhaust, the X-Point Radiator (XPR), a cold and dense plasma region on closed flux surfaces close to the X-point, was described by an analytical model that provides an understanding of its formation as well as its stability, i.e., the conditions under which it transitions into a deleterious MARFE with the potential to result in a disruptive termination. With the XPR close to the divertor target, a new detached divertor concept, the compact radiative divertor, was developed. Here, the exhaust power is radiated before reaching the target, allowing close proximity of the X-point to the target. No limitations by the shallow field line angle due to the large flux expansion were observed, and sufficient compression of neutral density was demonstrated. With respect to the pumping of non-recycling impurities, the divertor enrichment was found to mainly depend on the ionisation energy of the impurity under consideration. In the area of MHD physics, analysis of the hot plasma core motion in sawtooth crashes showed good agreement with nonlinear 2-fluid simulations. This indicates that the fast reconnection observed in these events is adequately described including the pressure gradient and the electron inertia in the parallel Ohm’s law. Concerning disruption physics, a shattered pellet injection system was installed in collaboration with the ITER International Organisation. Thanks to the ability to vary the shard size distribution independently of the injection velocity, as well as its impurity admixture, it was possible to tailor the current quench rate, which is an important requirement for future large devices such as ITER. Progress was also made modelling the force reduction of VDEs induced by massive gas injection on AUG. The H-mode density limit was characterised in terms of safe operational space with a newly developed active feedback control method that allowed the stability boundary to be probed several times within a single discharge without inducing a disruptive termination. Regarding integrated operation scenarios, the role of density peaking in the confinement of the ITER baseline scenario (high plasma current) was clarified. The usual energy confinement scaling ITER98( p,y ) does not capture this effect, but the more recent H20 scaling does, highlighting again the importance of developing adequate physics based models. Advanced tokamak scenarios, aiming at large non-inductive current fraction due to non-standard profiles of the safety factor in combination with high normalised plasma pressure were studied with a focus on their access conditions. A method to guide the approach of the targeted safety factor profiles was developed, and the conditions for achieving good confinement were clarified. Based on this, two types of advanced scenarios (‘hybrid’ and ‘elevated’ q -profile) were established on AUG and characterised concerning their plasma performance.

The three-dimensional structure of drift-wave turbulence is studied in the core of the toroidal low-temperature plasma in the torsatron TJ-K. The results are compared with simulations from the GEM3 turbulence code. In experiment and simulation, the dimensionless parameters are similar to those of fusion edge plasmas. Arrays with 64 probes are used to measure parallel wavenumbers, propagation velocities and the tilt of the turbulent structures with respect to the field line. A parallel wavelength of 15 m and a parallel velocity in between the ion-sound and the Alfven velocity confirm the three-dimensional nature of drift-wave turbulence. Quantitative agreement between experiment and simulation is found. The comparison with the drift-wave dispersion relation gives evidence for the coupling of the density perturbation to the shear-Alfven wave. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The influence of strongly sheared E× Bflows on the spatio-temporal structure of turbulence has been investigated in a toroidally confined plasma. The experiments have been carried out on the low-temperature plasma of the TJ-K torsatron, where the flow shear was induced by core plasma biasing. The spatio-temporal structure of the turbulence has been measured in great detail with multi-probe arrays. It turned out that because of strong shear, the plasma undergoes a transition, where broadband density fluctuations are suppressed and the particle confinement is improved, but large-scale coherent structures become dominant. They have increased correlation lengths and a reduced lifetime. The large-scale structures could be associated with inward transport due to a modification in the cross-phase between density and potential fluctuations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Filaments of increased pressure (‘blobs’) in the scrape-off layer of toroidally confined magnetized plasmas are studied in the context of fusion research due to their relevance for confinement and wall safety. Analytical models in simple toroidal magnetic field geometries have proven useful to get a quantitative understanding of blob dynamics in tokamaks. However, their direct applicability to the more complicated stellarator geometry is far less studied. The experiments presented here show that in the stellarator TJ-K blobs are field-aligned structures occurring in scrape-off layer regions of negative mean normal curvature, which is in agreement with common blob models. Furthermore, it is shown that in TJ-K, in accordance with findings from tokamaks, blobs account for a significant fraction of the turbulent scrape-off layer transport of the order of several tens of percent. Relatively dense, field-aligned, filament-like structures (blobs) have been observed to propagate radially and poloidally through the scrape-off layer (SOL) in magnetically confined fusion plasmas, and contribute significantly to SOL transport. A detailed understanding of blob structure and dynamics, and their dependence on magnetic field geometry, is important in magnetic confinement physics for the prediction of heat loads on reactor wall facing components, as well as for understanding plasma confinement and neutral particle recycling. Experimentally deduced centre of mass poloidal blob velocity components, obtained using the conditional averaging technique, have been compared to an analytical blob model which has been simplified to express blob velocity in terms of the magnetic field curvature vector. Background flows are not incorporated into the analytical model, and must be added in to obtain good agreement with the experimental data. In addition, the 3D structure of blobs in TJ-K has been investigated using the conditional average of density fluctuations in two toroidally separated poloidal planes. Blobs are observed to be aligned to a flux tube near to the last closed flux surface, in the blob birth region. However at positions further along the blob trajectory, the structures do not deform according to the magnetic shear, rather they remain rigid, and retain their original form. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Blob properties are studied in the scrape-off layer of the tokamak ASDEX Upgrade with a fast camera. The gas-puff imaging technique is used to investigate the detection rate as well as the blob size and velocity scaling. The experiments were performed in L- and H-mode phases of the same discharges to study the change in blob properties after the L-H transition. In both regimes the detection rate is of the order of a few thousand blobs per second, which is compatible with the picture of blob generation by edge micro instabilities. The blob size increases in H-mode, while the radial velocity decreases slightly. The changes are, however, not indicating a drastic change in the blob dynamics in both phases. The experimentally found blob properties were compared to predictions from a novel blob model including effects due to a finite ion temperature, which should be more appropriate for the conditions in the SOL of fusion plasmas. In the stellarator TJ-K, overdense low-temperature plasmas are created by means of microwaves at 2.45 GHz. Extensive studies have been carried out to understand the heating process. The plasma breakdown at the cyclotron resonance layer has been directly observed with a multiple Langmuir probe array. Profile measurements indicate power deposition at the plasma boundary, where the upper hybrid resonance (UHR) is located. This result is confirmed by full-wave simulations which emphasize the importance of the vacuum vessel to increase the absorbed microwave power due to multiple reflections. Further indications for heating at the UHR layer are found by measurements of the wave electric field of the incident microwave and by power-modulation experiments. The magnetic turbulent fluctuation spectrum is investigated in the core of a toroidally confined plasma with parameters similar to those in the fusion edge plasma. The measured spectra show fully developed turbulence over almost 6 decades down to the range of nano-Tesla field amplitudes. The magnetic fluctuations are interpreted as being due to the parallel dynamics of drift-wave turbulence. The predicted strong b dependence of the magnetic fluctuations is experimentally confirmed. For the present parameters, anomalous transport due to the magnetic turbulence can be neglected compared with the electrostatic contribution. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In two-dimensional turbulent systems the redistribution of energy can be described by quadratic nonlinear three-wave interactions, which are limited by resonance conditions. The set of coupling modes can be understood as resonant manifold. It has been predicted by theory that, in the presence of a shear flow, the resonant manifold in wave-number space shrinks in time favoring large-scale structures. The phenomenon of manifold shrinking in the presence of shear flows is studied the first time experimentally in drift wave turbulence at the stellarator TJ-K by bicoherence analysis. By estimating effective mode numbers characterizing the width of the manifold, it is demonstrated that increasing shear leads to a shrinking of the resonance manifold.

The collisionality scaling of density and potential coupling together with zonal flow energy transfer and spectral power is investigated at the stellarator experiment TJ-K. With a poloidal probe array, consisting of 128 Langmuir probes, density and potential fluctuations are measured on four neighboring flux surfaces simultaneously over the complete poloidal circumference. By analyzing Reynolds stress and pseudo-Reynolds stress, it is found that, for increasing collisionality, the coupling between density and potential decreases which hinders the zonal flow drive. Also, as a consequence, the nonlinear energy transfer, as well as the zonal flow contribution to the complete turbulent spectrum, decreases the same way. This is in line with theoretical expectations and is a first experimental verification of the importance of collisionality for large-scale structure formation in magnetically confined toroidal plasmas.

The regulation of turbulent transport by zonal flows is studied experimentally on a flux surface of the stellarator experiment TJ-K. Data of 128 Langmuir probes at different toroidal and poloidal positions on a single flux surface enable us to measure simultaneously the zonal flow activity and the turbulent transport in great detail. A reduction of turbulent transport by 30% during the zonal flow phase is found. It is shown that the reduction process is initiated by a modification in the cross phase between density and electric field followed by a reduction in the fluctuation levels, which sustain low transport levels on larger time scales than the zonal flow lifetime.

The dependence of turbulent transport on magnetic field properties is measured in detail on a plasma in a stellarator configuration. Pronounced poloidal asymmetries of fluctuation amplitudes and turbulent transport are observed. The transport maximum is located in regions where normal curvature of the magnetic field is negative and simultaneously the geodesic curvature has positive values. A major role of the local magnetic shear cannot be confirmed. The results can have important implications for the optimization of stellarators and the power influx into the scrape-off layer.

By means of a unique probe array, the interaction between zonal flows and broad-band drift-wave turbulence has been investigated experimentally in a magnetized toroidal plasma. Homogeneous potential fluctuations on a magnetic flux surface, previously reported as long range correlations, could be traced back to a predator-prey-like interaction between the turbulence and the zonal flow. At higher frequency the nonlocal transfer of energy to the zonal flow is dominant and the low-frequency oscillations are shown to result from the reduced turbulence activity due to this energy loss. This self-regulation process turns out to be enhanced with increased background shear flows.

Using laser induced fluorescence and passive spectroscopy on a magnetically confined low-temperature plasma, anomalous ion heating is observed which exceeds collisional heating from the electrons by a factor of up to five. Direct wave heating due to the 2.45 GHz microwave as well as stochastic heating by large-amplitude fluctuations could be ruled out as explanations. Good quantitative agreement is found when comparing the missing power in the ion species with heating power due to the dissipation of drift-wave turbulence. This turbulent energy transfer into the ion channel could have important consequences for the interpretation of transport in fusion plasmas.

The energetic interaction between drift-wave turbulence and zonal flows is studied experimentally in two-dimensional wave number space. The kinetic energy is found to be transferred nonlocally from the drift waves to the zonal flow. This confirms the theoretical prediction that the parametric-modulational instability is the driving mechanism of zonal flows. The physical mechanism of this nonlocal energetic interaction between and zonal flows and turbulent drift-wave eddies in relation to the suppression of turbulent transport is discussed.

Turbulent transport at the transition from closed to open field lines has been investigated in the stellarator experiment TJ-K. It is found that drift-wave turbulence in the confined region is responsible for the generation of intermittent structures (so-called blobs) in the unconfined region. There the character of turbulence changes and a decoupling of density and potential fluctuations is observed. The poloidal propagation of the intermittent events can be understood in the framework of background flows caused by gradients in the equilibrium plasma pressure and potential profiles.
