TWO hundred isolates of Pasteurella haemolytica and 8 isolates of P. multocida were identified by biochemical and serological methods. Among P. haemolytica strains, 6 different serotypes were found while 25 isolates were untypable. The 8 isolates of P. multocida belonged to the same serotype.

Large quantities of oranges are wasted during storage due to its highly perishable nature. Research was therefore conducted on quality evaluation of orange fruits stored in aluminum-cladded (ABBEC) and non-cladded burnt-clay-brick evaporative coolers (NBBEC) to prevent postharvest loss. Essentially, the evaporative coolers comprised of double burnt-brick walls (1.29 × 2.55 × 2.56 m) external and (1.13 × 1.27 × 2.08 m) internal, (L × W × H) with wet sand bed in between and a storage space of (1.13 × 0.36 × 1.32 m), (L × W × H). Metabolic rates of oranges were highest at ambient storage, intermediate in NBBEC with the least value in ABBEC. Beta carotene, ascorbic acid and acidity decreased while total soluble solids, pH and microbial loads increased during storage. ABBEC storage resulted in 4.0 to 5.3°C decrease in ambient temperature with corresponding higher relative humidity over the non-cladded burnt-clay-brick coolers.

The multiple products derivable from Acacia auriculiformis in terms of its soil nutrient augmentation by virtue of its nitrogen fixation capabilities are incontrovertible. This is in addition to being an ornamental, evergreen and shade providing tree, But its seed dormancy and dearth of knowledge regarding its growth rates in different soil types had hampered large scale production of its seedlings. Thus, an evaluation of the effects of some seed pre-sowing treatments on its seedling emergence (rates and percentages) and morphological growth parameters (external) in different soil types were investigated at the Screen House of the Department of Plant Science and Biotechnology, Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba Akoko, Ondo State, Nigeria for a period of 8 weeks. The experimental design was a 4 × 3 factorial experiment in completely randomized design comprising 4 different soil types, 3 pre – sowing treatment methods (replicated thrice). Seedling emergence (rates and percentages) and external morphological growth indices (plant height, collar girth, number of leaves and leaf area) were investigated. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) test was employed in processing the data collected by employing relevant statistical package (SPSS 20.0). More often than not, the emphasis is laid on the essence of employing organic manures for raising plant seedlings and even in improving the nutrient status of their growth media for higher productivity. Afrormosia elata has numerous medicinal uses but not very much available. Thus, the study on the effects of fish pond sediments (FPS) and decomposed cow dung (DCD) on the early growth of A. elata seedlings was carried out at the nursery ‘A’ of the Federal College of Forestry, Ibadan, Nigeria. A. elata seeds were sown in a finely perforated sieve (filled with washed river sand) and seedlings were pricked – out 2 weeks after seedling emergence into polythene pots with varying levels of FPS and DCD. The experimental design was Completely Randomized Design (CRD) consisting of nine treatments and eight replicates. Treatments include; T1(2 kg of FPS + 2 kg of topsoil); T2 (2 kg of DCD + 2 kg of topsoil); T3 (1.5 kg of FPS + 2 kg of topsoil); T4 (1.5 kg of DCD + 2 kg of topsoil); T5 (1 kg of FPS + 2 kg of topsoil); T6 (1 kg of DCD + 2 kg of topsoil); T7 (500 g of FPS + 2 kg of topsoil); T8 (500 g of DCD + 2 kg topsoil); and 2 kg of topsoil without any treatment served as control). Morphological parameters such as seedling height, collar diameter and leaf count as well as leaf biomass were assessed and the data collected were subjected to Analysis of Variance (ANOVA). The result showed that T3 (1.5 kg FPS + 2 Kg TS) had the best performance in height, leaf area and leaf biomass with mean values of 11.02 cm, 21.65 cm2 and 1.16 g respectively. Though, there were no significant differences amongst the growth parameters assessed for this study. But T3 (1.5 kg FPS + 2 Kg TS) could be employed in raising the seedlings of this plant for faster growth rate.

Indigenous tree species like Terminalia ivorensis has multiple uses; from timber products to medicinal condiments for treating different ailments. This species is self-incompatible. Thus, habitat protection is a key to its survival and sustenance. This study evaluated the effect of provenance variations on the growth and development of T. ivorensis. Three provenances of T. ivorensis were selected; FRIN Arboretum, Onigambari Forest Reserve and J1 Forest Reserve. Thirty (30) seedlings of T. ivorensis were selected and marked at each provenance for assessment of growth parameters for a period of twelve weeks. The growth parameters included: seedling height, collar diameter, leaf count and leaf area. Also, soil samples were collected from each provenance to test for nutrient composition. Results showed that J1 Forest Reserve had best performance across the growth parameters assessed with 10.4 cm plant height, 2.02 mm collar diameter, 11 leaves count and 20.5 cm2 leaf area respectively. This growth parameter result differs significantly from the other two provenances. This was also attributed to the nutrient offered by J1 Forest Reserve with 1.18% and 2.20% of organic carbon and organic matter in the soil respectively. Also, the available phosphorus which is involved in photosynthesis, respiration, energy storage and transfer, cell division and enlargement as well as promotion of root formation was about 15.7 mg/kg in the soil and is considered high because it is higher than the critical level of 8.50mg/kg. J1 Forest Reserve is recommended as the best provenance for raising T. ivorensis amongst assessed natural habitats.

Effect of temperature on seed germination of Bombax costatum Pellegr & Vuill. (Malvales: Malvaceae), from four provenances in South Western Nigeria was investigated. A set of three replicates of 25 seeds per provenance were used for the experiment which was laid in a completely randomized block design. The seeds were exposed to fire temperature regimes for germination tests: 28 oC, 20 oC, 5 oC, 35 oC and 20 oC. Seed germination was recorded for 4 weeks. Data obtained were subjected to analysis of variance. Result showed that significant differences in seed germination under varying temperature regimes (P < 0.05). Interaction effect between temperature and provenances was not significant (P < 0.05). Seeds placed in ambient temperature had the highest mean number of germination (20.75) while the least mean value (0.17) was observed for cold room (-20 oC). B. costatum seeds should be exposed to ambient temperature so as to promote seed germination.

In any plantation establishment programme their must be adequate number of healthy seedlings and these depend on the nutrition and care given to them at the nursery stage. Pot experiment was conducted to assess the response of Moringa oleifera (Lam.) seedlings to different soil and nutritional sources at nursery stage. One hundred seeds were obtained from Centre for Environmental Renewable Resources Research and Development (CENRAD), Ibadan, Nigeria, and sown in germination trays. Seed germination was completed between 10-15 days, 36 uniformly growing seedlings were transplanted into polythene pots of size 29 cm x 25 cm and were filled with different soil sources at 500 g (arable) soil, forest reserve soil and natural forest mixed with nutritional sources of the same ratio (10 g) i.e. poultry manure, cow dung and NPK (15:15:15). The experiment was factorial arranged in a completely randomized design. Result showed that pots with natural forest soil mixed with 10 m NPK (s3f3) produced seedlings with highest value. In plant height (76.30 cm), stem diameter (3.47 mm) and number of branches (10) which was significantly different (p > 0.01) from the other treatments. The least value in plant height (30.70 cm) stem diameter (1.50 mm) and number of branches (3.3) were recorded in pots with forest reserve soil mixed with cow dung (s2f2). Interaction effect of soil and nutritional sources were significant for all the growth parameters assessed (p > 0.01). Natural forest soils treated with NPK (15:15:15) should be employed in raising Moringa oleifera seedlings at nursery stage for optimum performance.

The development of improved methods for estimating turbulent heat fluxes is important in effective monitoring of the surface energy balance for climate change prediction. However, different parameterized models carried out at the local site of Nigerian Micrometeorological site (NIMEX-1) did not consider the surface heat fluxes-aerodynamics resistance relationships, and these validated models cannot be incorporated into the Climate models because some of the input climate variables are not routinely available in some meteorological stations. This study therefore, aims at improving the diurnal patterns of surface heat fluxes estimates using radiometric surface temperature and aerodynamic surface-layer resistances. Hourly data of air temperature (T a ), soil temperature (T soil ), global radiation (Q L ), surface temperature (T s ), wind speed (u), Q H and Q E were obtained from the NIMEX-1 at Ile-Ife (7.55 o N, 4.55 o E). The Q H and Q E were estimated using Aerodynamic Resistance Approach algorithm which was modified to reduce the large bias errors between the aerodynamic temperature and surface temperature above the ground level. The algorithms were validated and rated using the following error statistics: coefficient of determination (r 2 ), Mean Bias Error (MBE) and Root Mean Square Error (RMSE). The RMSE and MBE for the modeled Q E estimated using ARM and MAR reduced from 28.33Wm -2 to 14.33 Wm -2 and 36.93 to 10.74 Wm -2 respectively while for Q H , the RMSE and MBE reduced from 17.29 Wm -2 to 9.49 Wm -2 and 31.39 to 16.93 Wm -2 respectively. The r 2 values ranged from 0.68 to 0.73 and 0.95 to 0.98 for Q H and Q E respectively. The MAR had the highest r 2 and least error values. Hence, the proposed modified Aerodynamic resistance models are estimated the diurnal and seasonal turbulent heat fluxes accurately for tropical regions.

Summary The clinical features of peste des petits ruminants (PPR) virus infection in goats were studied in two field outbreaks and by contact exposure of susceptible goats. Clinical signs observed included sudden onset of pyrexia, necrosis and erosions of the oral cavity, diarrhoea, and pneumonia, in that chronological order. Erosions of the vulva and prepuce as well as abortion were recorded in a few cases. Bacteriological examination of ante — in and post mortem samples showed that the most significant bacteria associated with PPR — infected goats were Pasteurella haemolytica, Klebsiella sp., Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Staphylococus pyogenes from the lungs, Salmonella sp. and E. coli from the faeces, Moraxella bovis from the eyes and Staphylococcus pyogenes from the oral cavity. The pathological lesions seen in natural PPR included necrosis, erosions and ulcerations of the epithelial layers of the labium, the vulva, and the alimentary tract as well as giant-cell type pneumonia. However, some of the affected goats had fibrinous or purulent bronchopneumonia, most probably caused by secondary bacteria. Zusammenfassung Peste des Petits Ruminants (PPR) bei Ziegen in Nigeria: Klinische, mikrobiologische und pathologische Charakteristika Die klinischen Charkteristika der Peste des Petits Ruminants (PPR)-Virusinfektion bei Ziegen wurden wahrend zwei Feldausbruchen und mittels Kontaktexposition empfanglicher Ziegen untersucht. Die beobachteten klinischen Krankheitszeichen waren plotzlich auftretendes Fieber, Nekrosen und Erosionen in der Maulhohle, Durchfalle und Pneumonien in der aufgefuhrten Reihenfolge. Erosionen an Vulva und Praputium ebenso wie Aborte wurden in wenigen Fallen beobachtet. Bakteriologische Untersuchungen von ante- und post mortem Proben zeigten, daβ die wichtigsten bakteriellen Infektionen in Verbindung mit der PPR verursacht wurden von Pasteurella haemolytica, Klebsiella sp., Pseudomonas aeruginosa und Staphylococcus pyogenes, isoliert aus der Lunge, ferner von Salmonella sp. und E. coli, isoliert aus den Faeces, sowie von Moraxella bovis, isoliert aus den Augen und von Staphylococcus pyogenes isoliert, aus der Maulhohle. Die pathologischen Lasionen, die bei den naturlichen Ausbruchen der PPR beobachtet wurden, waren Nekrosen, Erosionen und Ulcera des Lippen-Epithels, des Epithels der vulva und des Verdauungstrakts und das Auftreten von Pneumonien des Riesenzell-Typs. Obwohl einige der befallenen Ziegen fibrinose oder purulente Bronchopneumonien hatten, durften diese hochstwahrscheinlich durch bakterielle Sekundarinfektionen verursacht sein. Les signes cliniques observes ont ete une fievre brutale, des necroses et des errosions dans la gueule, de la diarrhee et des pneumonies dans l'ordre cite. Des errosions sur la vulve et le prepuce ainsi que des avortements ont ete observes dans quelques cas. Les recherches bacteriologiques d'echantillons ante- est post-mortem ont montre que les infections bacteriennes les plus importantes, liees a PPR etaient dues a Pasteurella haemolytica, Klebsiella sp., Pseudomonas aeruginosa et Staphylococcus pyogenes dans les poumons, a Salmonella sp. et E. coli dans les matieres fecales, a Moraxella bovis dans les yeux et a Staphylococcus pyogenes dans la gueule. Les lesions pathologiques observees lors de PPR dans le terrain furent des necroses, des errosions et des ulceres de l'epithelium des levres, de la vulve et du tube digestif et l'apparition de pneumonies du type «cellules geantes». Los signos nosologicos observados eran fiebre que aparecia repentinamente, necrosis y erosiones en la cavidad bucal, diarreas y pneumonias en la ringlera citada. En casos contados, se observaron erosiones en la vulva y prepucio, e incluso abortos. Los estudios bacteriologicos de muestras ante y post mortem mostraron que las infecciones bacterianas mas importantes fueron ocasionadas, en combinacion con la PPR, por Pasteurella haemolytica, Klebsiella sp., Pseudomonas aeruginosa y Staphylococcus pyogenes, aisladas del pulmon, ademas por Salmonella sp. y E. coli, aisladas de heces, asi como por Moraxella bovis, aislada en los ojos, y por Staphylococcus pyogenes, aislado de la cavidad bucal. Consistian las lesiones patologicas que se observaron en los brotes naturales de PPR en necrosis, erosiones y ulceras del epitelio labial, del epitelio vulvar y del tracto digestivo y la presentacion de pneumonias del tipo celular gigante. Aunque algunas de las cabras afectadas tenian broncopneumonias fibrinosas o purulentas, estas podrian haber sido ocasionadas con toda posibilidad por infecciones bacterianas secundarias.

The occurrence of pathogenic aerobic bacteria and fungi in 100 stray dogs was investigated. The most commonly isolated pathogens were Staphylococcus aureus, S. intermedius and Malassezia pachydermatis. No zoonotic pathogen was isolated. It is suggested that stray dogs may not maintain or transmit the pathogens.

Among the 395 hospital staff examined during this study, 35.2pc of them were found to carry S. aureus in their anterior nares. The carriage was slightly higher in females (35.8pc) compared with 34.4pc in males, although it was not statistically significant. When the different age groups and professions were considered, the carriage was highest among the age group of 21-30 years and with the Nursing staff, who incidentally, are closest to the patients and had the highest number among the staff members examined. The carrier rate was also significantly higher (P less than 0.05) among staff members who had worked in the hospital for 7-10 months compared with other staff. There was a good correlation (97pc) between coagulase positivity and mannitol fermentation, while Methicillin, Claforan and Gentamycin were found to be very effective against most of the isolates. On re-examination of those staff members who ar closely associated with the patients two years after the initial exercise in 1987, it was evident that a significant number (P less than 0.05) of those carriers of Staph aureus in our hospital are not persistent ones.

In this paper, the logistic regression model is applied to analyse some prison data. Precisely the model is used to predict the future conduct of a discharged prisoner. The consequence of this is that on the basis of the predicted probability of ‘success' one can say whether or not it is beneficial to retain a convict in prison for a long period of time.

Expressions for the moment generating functions, cumulants and coefficients of kurtosis of a generalization of the logistic distribution are derived and used to show that any symmetric version of this distribution can be closely and simply approximated by a Studentt distribution. Related approximation of the distribution of the logistic sample median is discussed.

A study conducted on 50 healthy senior staff wives (socioeconomic group 1) and 63 healthy junior staff wives (socioeconomic group 2) attending the antenatal clinic at the University of Ife Health Center showed marked differences in the level of serum cholesterol and hemoglobin between the two groups. It was also found that women in group 2 took 6.8% of their total calorie requirements as fat and group 1 women took 12.0% of their total calorie requirements as fat.

Eight strains of salmonellae isolated from clinical cases in domestic animals in Ibadan, Nigeria are reported. Some of these are reported for the first time either in domestic animals or in the country. The possible danger of resistance to certain antibiotics being developed as a result of such antibiotics being used as food additives, is pointed out.

A disease was observed in 3 to 7 weeks old chickens in Nigeria between April 1969 and July1971; seven outbreaks on eleven farms containing20,000 chickens were recorded. The mortality was in the region of 12·5 per cent with a morbidity rate of up to60 per cent. From the clinical signs, epidemiology, pathology and microbiology of the disease described it would appear that Infectious bursal or Gumboro disease occurs in Nigeria.

Thirty-six out of 120 isolates of coagulase-positive (c.p.) and coagulase-negative (c.n.) staphylococci isolated from clinically healthy and sick goats were characterized to be of animal origin on the basis of beta-haemolysin production and not a fibrinolysin (Minett, 1936; Elek and Levy, 1950; Marandon and Oeding, 1966), although the specific animal reservoir could not be determined. There was a correlation between beta-haemolysin production on 7 per cent human blood agar and 7 per cent sheep blood agar. "hot-cold" lysis phenomenon (Buxton and Fraser, 1977) was observe in 7.5 per cent of the isolates. Isolates characterized show single and multiple antibiotic resistance (Adegoke, 1981).

Twenty-two Nigerian cockerels and 19 White Leghorn cockerels were each injected intramuscularly with 1·5×109 viable organisms of a relatively avirulent strain ofSalmonella gallinarum (NCTC 10532). The Nigerian cockerels were more resistant to infection as judged by the values of the haemoglobin, haematocrit, red cell count, leucocyte count and antibody titre during the course of infection. The authors suggest that the higher resistance may be due to the earlier growth and higher organ weight of the bursa of Fabricius of the Nigerian breed than of the White Leghorn (Aire,1973).

A total of 55 mycoplasma strains, isolated from the vagina of goats, were examined. Three strains, being arginine positive and glucose negative, could not be finally classified. Five isolates were identified as Acholeplasma laidlawii. Fourty-seven strains were phosphatase positive, glucose and arginine negative. Nine of these formed “film and spots” on standard growth medium, and reduced tetrazolium aerobically. Serological examination identified 7 as M. agalactiae, while 2 were M. bovis. The remaining 38 isolates did not reduce tetrazolium aerobically, and did not produce “film and spots.” on standard growth medium. All these except one were identified as M. bovigenitalium by immunofluorescence. Their relationship to group 11 otf Al-Aubaidi is discussed.

Two strains of boric acid tolerant Vibrio cholerae have been studied in order to identify the characteristics which distinguish them from the 'wild-type' virulent strains. Strain Ib5 requires either amino acid cysteine or methionine while strain Ib5S requires deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) for growth. Although the strains did not grow on desoxycholate citrate agar (DCA) they grew well on chocolate agar. Morphologically filamentous, bacillary and comma-shaped forms were seen, depending on the media and incubation period. The strains failed to cause accumulation of fluid in gut ligation and permeability factor tests. With the single radial immunodiffusion test, strain Ib5S gave positive reaction in 83% of the tests when DNA was added to the growth medium. On the other hand only 25% of the tests were positive when no DNA was added to the growth medium, even though the antigen was concentrated ten-fold. Strain Ib5 only gave 50% positive tests when the antigen was concentrated ten-fold. It is therefore suggested that Ib5S strain is a cholerangenoid producer in the presence of DNA, and may be useful as an effective vaccine against cholera.

Nine of 11 caprine strains of Staphylococcus aureus examined belong to biotype C. They were typable serologically using antisera developed for typing human strains of Staphylococcus aureus. H2 was found to be the dominant thermostable antigen whilst 1 and 0 were the most common thermolabile antigens. Some strains possessed protein A and poly A beta (beta-glucosaminyl ribitol teichoic acid). Phage typing of the strains was achieved with an international set of phages for typing human strains of Staphylococcus aureus and they belong to phage groups II, and the mixed group.

Bacillus pumilus NCTC AII6/73 produces a novel extracellular alkaline proteinase whose optimum is pH 9.5. The purified product from ion-exchange chromatography (DEAE-cellulose) was resolved into two bands by polyacrylamide-sodium dodecyl sulphate (SDS) gel electrophoresis. These had approximate molecular weights of 15.6 × 103 and 11.1 × 103 daltons, respectively, and a high content of glycine and proline, comprising roughly 50% of the total amino acid residues.

Thirty strains Mycoplasma isolated from pneumonic lungs of goats were chracterised biochemically and serologically. On the basis of biochemical characteristics, the strains were divided into three groups. (A) Eighteen strains which fermented glucose and mannose, digested serum and reduced tetrazolium, (B) 10 strains which reduced tetrazolium, formed "film and spots" and possessed phosphatase activity and (C) two strains which catabolised arginine only. Serologically group A strains were identified as M. mycoides subspecies, group B strains could not be fully identified but on the basis of immunofluorescence and biochemical reactions were put in the M. agalactiae subspecies; there are to be further investigated. Group C strains were identified as M. arginini.

Two boric acid tolerant variants were developed by passage in boric acid containing media from a mouse virulent parent Vibrio cholerae strain. The variants were stable, exhibited increased acid resistance, were less virulent to mice, but protected mice against challenge with the mouse virulent parent strain.

The prevalence of caprine pneumonia in Nigeria is high during the rainy and "harmattan" seasons. In this investigation the important bacteria isolated both from normal and diseased respiratory tracts of goats were pasteurellae and mycoplasmata.

Background : The incidence of testicular cancers has been increasing in many populations over the past decades and concerns have been expressed about the possible decrease in semen quality in the period. It may account for one of the factors responsible for increasing male infertility in Ilorin, Nigeria. Objective: To find out the incidence, age distribution clinical presentation, duration before presentation and the occurrence of various Histopathological subtypes of testicular tumours in Ilorin. Design: A retrospective study. Setting: A teaching hospital (University of Ilorin) Patients: Testicular biopsies were done on patients presenting at the hospital with suspected cases of malignancies. Materials and Mehtods: All consecutives cases of testicular malignancies diagnosed in the department of pathology, university of Ilorin Teaching Hospital, during the period of thirteen years (1990-2003) were included in this study. Relevant clinical details such as age, clinical presentation and side of involvement of the testis were also recorded. The slide preparations of this sample were retrieved and reviewed. Result: During the span of thirteen years (1990-2003), testicular cancers accounted for 0.05% of all sample received and 0.14% of the male biopsies. Most of the diagnosed cases were in the first decades of life and are mainly germ cells tumours of which yolk sac tumours are commonest subtypes. Conclusion: Incidence of testicular cancers is still low in this environment and may not account for major contributory factors in male infertility in Ilorin.
