We present a detailed characterisation and theoretical interpretation of the broadband emission of the paradigmatic TeV blazar Mrk 421, with a special focus on the multi-band flux correlations. Methods. The dataset has been collected through an extensive multi-wavelength campaign organised between 2016 December and 2017 June. The instruments involved are MAGIC, FACT, Fermi-LAT, Swift, GASP-WEBT, OVRO, Medicina, and Metsahovi. Additionally, four deep exposures (several hours long) with simultaneous MAGIC and NuSTAR observations allowed a precise measurement of the falling segments of the two spectral components. Results. The very-high-energy (VHE; E 100 GeV) gamma rays and X-rays are positively correlated at zero time lag, but the strength and characteristics of the correlation change substantially across the various energy bands probed. The VHE versus X-ray fluxes follow dierent patterns, partly due to substantial changes in the Compton dominance for a few days without a simultaneous increase in the X-ray flux (i.e., orphan gamma-ray activity). Studying the broadband spectral energy distribution (SED) during the days including NuSTAR observations, we show that these changes can be explained within a one-zone leptonic model with a blob that increases its size over time. The peak frequency of the synchrotron bump varies by two orders of magnitude throughout the campaign. Our multi-band correlation study also hints at an anti-correlation between UV-optical and X-ray at a significance higher than 3. A VHE flare observed on MJD 57788 (2017 February 4) shows gamma-ray variability on multi-hour timescales, with a factor ten increase in the TeV flux but only a moderate increase in the keV flux. The related broadband SED is better described by a two-zone leptonic scenario rather than by a one-zone scenario.We find that the flare can be produced by the appearance of a compact second blob populated by high energetic electrons spanning a narrow range of Lorentz factors, from 0 min = 2104 to 0 max = 6105. © 2021 Georg Thieme Verlag. The blazar Mrk 421 shows frequent, short flares in the TeV energy regime. Due to the fast nature of such episodes, we often fail to obtain sufficient simultaneous information about flux variations in several energy bands. To overcome this lack of multi-wavelength (MWL) coverage, especially for the pre- and post-flare periods, we have set up a monitoring program with the FACT telescope (TeV energies) and the Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory (X-rays). On 2019 June 9, Mrk 421 showed a TeV outburst reaching a flux level of more than two times the flux of the Crab Nebula at TeV energies. We acquired simultaneous data in the X-rays with additional observations by XMM-Newton and INTEGRAL. For the first time, we can study a TeV blazar in outburst taking advantage of highly sensitive X-ray data from XMM-Newton and INTEGRAL combined. Our dataset is complemented by pointed radio observations by Effelsberg at GHz frequencies. The origin of the gamma-ray emission of the blazar Mrk 421 is still a matter of debate. We used 5.5 years of unbiased observing campaign data, obtained using the FACT telescope and the Fermi LAT detector at TeV and GeV energies, the longest and densest so far, together with contemporaneous multi-wavelength observations, to characterise the variability of Mrk 421 and to constrain the underlying physical mechanisms. We studied and correlated light curves obtained by ten different instruments and found two significant results. The TeV and X-ray light curves are very well correlated with a lag of, 10 pages, 8 figures, 1 table

[Context] Markarian 501 (Mrk 501) is a very high-energy (VHE) gamma-ray blazar located at z = 0:034, which is regularly monitored by a wide range of multi-wavelength instruments, from radio to VHE gamma rays. During a period of almost two weeks in July 2014, the highest X-ray activity of Mrk 501 was observed in -14 years of operation of the Neil Gehrels Swift Gamma-ray Burst Observatory., [Aims] We characterize the broadband variability of Mrk 501 from radio to VHE gamma rays during the most extreme X-ray activity measured in the last 14 years, and evaluate whether it can be interpreted within theoretical scenarios widely used to explain the broadband emission from blazars., [Methods] The emission of Mrk 501 was measured at radio with Metsähovi, at optical–UV with KVA and Swift/UVOT, at X-ray with Swift/XRT and Swift/BAT, at gamma ray with Fermi-LAT, and at VHE gamma rays with the FACT and MAGIC telescopes. The multi-band variability and correlations were quantified, and the broadband spectral energy distributions (SEDs) were compared with predictions from theoretical models., [Results] The VHE emission of Mrk 501 was found to be elevated during the X-ray outburst, with a gamma-ray flux above 0.15 TeV varying from ∼0.5 to ∼2 times the Crab nebula flux. The X-ray and VHE emission both varied on timescales of 1 day and were found to be correlated. We measured a general increase in the fractional variability with energy, with the VHE variability being twice as large as the X-ray variability. The temporal evolution of the most prominent and variable segments of the SED, characterized on a day-by-day basis from 2014 July 16 to 2014 July 31, is described with a one-zone synchrotron self-Compton model with variations in the break energy of the electron energy distribution (EED), and with some adjustments in the magnetic field strength and spectral shape of the EED. These results suggest that the main flux variations during this extreme X-ray outburst are produced by the acceleration and the cooling of the high-energy electrons. A narrow feature at ∼3 TeV was observed in the VHE spectrum measured on 2014 July 19 (MJD 56857.98), which is the day with the highest X-ray flux (>0.3 keV) measured during the entire Swift mission. This feature is inconsistent with the classical analytic functions to describe the measured VHE spectra (power law, log-parabola, and log-parabola with exponential cutoff) at more than 3σ. A fit with a log-parabola plus a narrow component is preferred over the fit with a single log-parabola at more than 4σ, and a dedicated Monte Carlo simulation estimated the significance of this extra component to be larger than 3σ. Wir berichten von einer fieberhaften, symmetrischen, schmerzhaften Weichteilschwellung beider Oberschenkel bei einem gesunden 54-jahrigen Mann. Als Ursache konnte histologisch eine nekrotisierende Pannikulitis des subkutanen Fettgewebes beschrieben werden. Diese seltene Entitat war der Indikator fur den Nachweis eines α1-Antitrypsin(A1AT)-Mangels, der molekulargenetisch als homozygote PiZZ-Form klassifiziert wurde. Es zeigte sich ein beginnendes Lungenemphysem mit Einschrankung der pulmonalen Funktionsreserve. Durch A1AT-Substitution konnte eine vollkommene Remission der Pannikulitis erreicht werden.

The First G-APD Cherenkov Telescope (FACT) has been monitoring Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) for the past five years. The use of robust silicon photomultipliers (SiPMs) allows for a continuous, unbiased sampling even during bright-light conditions. This dataset promises insights into the core regions of AGN by investigating the periodicity of the sources. Periodic changes in the flux could indicate a binary nature of the supermassive black holes. A study using the Lomb-Scargle periodogram to find periodicity in monitored AGN is presented. Repeating patterns in the observation times, like moon periods and seasonal effects, affect the analysis by introducing spurious peaks into the periodogram. The zenith-dependence of the observed $\gamma$-ray rates further complicate the interpretation. Showing no variability at TeV energies, the $\gamma$-ray flux of the Crab Nebula is used to characterize this latter effect, before applying the Lomb-Scargle algorithm.

Blazars are highly variable objects and their spectral energy distribution (SED) features two peaks. The emission at low energies is understood, however, the origin of the emission at TeV energies is strongly debated. While snapshots of SEDs usually can be explained with simple models, the evolution of SEDs challenges many models and allows for conclusions on the emission mechanisms. Leptonic models expect a correlation between the two peaks, while hadronic models can accommodate more complex correlations. To study time-resolved SEDs, we set up a target-of-opportunity program triggering high-resolution X-ray observations based on the monitoring at TeV energies by the First G-APD Cherenkov Telescope (FACT). To search for time lags and identify orphan flares, this is accompanied by X-ray monitoring with the Swift satellite. These observations provide an excellent multi-wavelength (MWL) data sample showing the temporal behaviour of the blazar emission along the electromagnetic spectrum. To constrain the origin of the TeV emission, we extract the temporal evolution of the low energy peak from Swift data and calculate the expected flux at TeV energies using a theoretical model. Comparing this to the flux measured by FACT, we want to conclude on the underlying physics. This article reports a case of febrile, symmetrical and painful soft tissue swelling on both thighs in a 54-year-old otherwise healthy male patient. Histologically, necrotizing panniculitis of subcutaneous adipose tissue was described as a marker manifestation of a previously unknown alpha-1-antitrypsin (A1AT) deficiency with pulmonary emphysema and low plasma A1AT levels. The PiZZ homozygous form of A1AT could be diagnosed by gene sequencing. Complete remission of panniculitis could be achieved by A1AT replacement therapy.

A plasma-based deposition method was developed which allows the formation of non-metallic coatings with a graded metal interlayer to improve the substrate adhesion of the non-metallic coating. For this a plasma-enhanced PVD process was combined with a CVD process using a hollow cathode arc discharge plasma produced from a LaB 6 cathode as thermal electron emitter. In the present experiments layers which consist of a combination of an Al interlayer with a graded transition to an a-C:H top coating were deposited. The metal atoms needed for the interlayer formation were introduced into the plasma by evaporation, ionised by the plasma and deposited on the substrate. Subsequently, by introducing hydrocarbon precursor gases into the same discharge, the a-C:H coating was deposited. During the deposition the energy of the ions can be controlled by applying a negative r.f. bias potential to the substrate. The a-C:H top coating had a thickness of up to 3 μm. The thickness of the Al and the mixed Al–C interface was 0.3–0.8 μm. Parallel to the experimental work a space-resolved numerical model was developed to analyze the plasma processes which lead to the deposition of the coating. The results of the calculations were density profiles of the relevant gas phase species and deposition rates which can be compared with experimental values.

The common theoretical model used to describe the sintering process is the two particle model. This model describes comprehensively the growth of inter-particle contacts driven by the Laplace pressure. In three dimensions this model fails as cooperative material transport (i.e., movements of powder particles) occurs. The fundamental understanding of these processes is still rather sketchy and is derived from the observation of 1D or 2D samples. To observe and quantify cooperative material transport new experimental methods are needed, for example high resolution computer tomography in conjunction with photogrammetric image analysis. Single-crystal copper spheres were marked by drilling holes into the surface of each particle and two samples were prepared using the marked powder. One sample was heated continuously to 1,050 °C in a silica capillary and was analyzed by in situ synchrotron computer tomography (SCT) at the European synchrotron radiation facility in Grenoble. Free sintering was investigated by ex-situ SCT at Bessy II in Berlin. The novel technique of drilling holes into the sphere surfaces allows for the quantification of both intrinsic rotations and particle rolling by photogrammetry. The observed intrinsic rotations exceed the rolling by far and we conclude that the anisotropy of grain boundary energies results in grain boundary sliding. Furthermore, we present first computer simulations of sintering processes based on initial particle positions measured by SCT.

Systemic sclerosis (SSc) is a chronic autoimmune connective tissue disease. Of the numerous organ manifestations, involvement of the upper and lower gastrointestinal tract (GIT) appears to be the most frequent with regard to the clinical symptoms. However, as the frequency and clinical relevance of GI involvement in patients with SSc are not known in detail, the German network of the systemic sclerosis (DNSS) has developed a detailed questionnaire to evaluate the extent and profile of gastrointestinal involvement in SSc patients. The multi-symptom questionnaire was used at baseline and after 1 year in registered patients of the DNSS. In addition, the results were compared with gastrointestinal disorders in patients with SSc and other rheumatic diseases, as well as with the medical history of the patients. In total, 90 patients were included in the study. The results of the study show that in reality, a much higher (nearly all) percentage of (98,9%) patients than expected suffer from GI-symptoms, regardless of the stage of their disease. Of these, meteorism (87,8%) was the most common followed by coughing/sore voice (77,8%), heartburn (daytime 68,9%, nighttime 53,3%), diarrhea (67,8%), stomach ache (68,9%) and nausea (61,1%). Although SSc patients were treated according to the respective recommendations, only limited improvements with regard to GI-symptoms could be achieved after 1 year of follow-up. In addition, the study revealed that the multi-symptom questionnaire is a useful tool to contribute to identify the gastrointestinal sequelae in systemic sclerosis.

The First G-APD Cherenkov Telescope (FACT) is monitoring blazars at TeV energies. Thanks to the observing strategy, the automatic operation and the usage of solid state photosensors (SiPM, aka G-APDs), the duty cycle of the instrument has been maximized and the observational gaps minimized. This provides a unprecedented, unbiased data sample of almost 9000~hours of data of which 2375 hours were taken in 2016. An automatic quick look analysis provides results with low latency on a public website. More than 40 alerts have been sent in the last three years based on this. To study the origin of the very high energy emission from blazars simultaneous multi-wavelength and multi-messenger observations are crucial to draw conclusions on the underlying emission mechanisms, e.g. to distinguish between leptonic and hadronic models. FACT not only participates in multi-wavelength studies, correlation studies with other instruments and multi-messenger studies, but also collects time-resolved spectral energy distributions using a target-of-opportunity program with X-ray satellites. At TeV energies, FACT provides an unprecedented, unbiased data sample. Using up to 1850 hours per source, the duty cycle of the sources and the characteristics of flares at TeV energies are studied. In the presentation, the highlights from more than five years of monitoring will be summarized including several flaring activities of Mrk 421, Mrk 501 and 1ES 1959+650., PoS: Proceedings of Science, 301, ISSN:1824-8039
