The aim of this study was to understand the relationship between acoustic characteristics and body size of Korean rockfish Sebastes schlegelii in order to better estimate the body length of S. schlegelii by passive acoustic techniques. In this study, S. schlegelii, with a body length ranging from 21.7 to 24.8 cm (mean ± SD = 23.33 ± 0.93 cm) and a body weight of 144.2 to 250.3 g were selected as subjects. The aim was to explore the relationship between the acoustic characteristics of the fish and their standardized lengths through aquarium experiments. Few studies have explored the relationship between benthic and planktonic assemblages in reservoirs, despite their role in food chains and maintaining ecological functions. Macroinvertebrates play a crucial role in food webs and contribute about 42% of whole-lake secondary productivity. Therefore, their status is vital for maintaining good ecological functions. In this study, we selected Nanwan Reservoir, a eutrophic thermally stratified reservoir in China, to evaluate the community of macroinvertebrates in different seasons and explore the relationships between macroinvertebrate assemblages and different planktonic groups, including phytoplankton, protozoans, rotifers, and planktonic crustaceans. Cyanophyta and Bacillariophyta dominated the phytoplankton assemblages, and their proportions varied with seasons. The bad community of macroinvertebrates in summer, autumn, and winter could be attributed to the excessive growth of Cyanophyta or other phytoplankton. Based on the results of partial least squares regression, an algorithm used for prediction, we determined that the excessive growth of algae, crustaceans, protozoans, and Cyanophyta was detrimental to the development of macroinvertebrates, and was indicative of high nutrient loads in the reservoir. However, the growth of Bacillariophyta, Chrysophyta, and Euglenophyta was advantageous to macroinvertebrate assemblages and indicated a better ecological condition of the reservoir. The results of partial least squares structural equation modeling demonstrated close associations between phytoplankton and both zooplankton and macroinvertebrates, indicating their interdependence in this reservoir system. Our study results imply that the status of macroinvertebrates can be predicted by the abundance of some planktonic assemblages, and cost savings from selecting one of the planktonic groups to monitor ecological conditions could be accomplished in future studies.

Determining the movement and migration patterns of fish between different environments is crucial for understanding the distribution of fish populations and the ecological mechanisms underlying their spatial dynamics. This study is the first to employ otolith Sr:Ca and Ba:Ca profiles to elucidate habitat use by the commercially valuable estuarine species Eleutheronema rhadinum. Age 1+ fish were present in samples from the East China Sea and South China Sea, caught off China in October to December of 2019. Characterization of both otolith element profiles through a quantitative approach suggested migration plasticity for E. rhadinum, especially during the first year. However, the Ba:Ca profile revealed a more distinct pattern of habitat use compared with the Sr:Ca profile, suggesting that the Ba:Ca ratio is more appropriate for life-history reconstruction of this species. Most individuals appeared to be estuary-dependent, with some appearing to have entered fresh water for a short time during their first year of life. After their first winter, individuals tended to move into coastal waters, and most apparently overwintered in the marine environment. Knowledge of the diverse life-history strategies of this valuable species at different life stages should be incorporated into future conservation and management efforts.

The objective of the cyclotron radiation emission spectroscopy (CRES) technology is to build precise particle energy spectra. This is achieved by identifying the start frequencies of charged particle trajectories which, when exposed to an external magnetic field, leave semi-linear profiles (called tracks) in the time–frequency plane. Due to the need for excellent instrumental energy resolution in application, highly efficient and accurate track reconstruction methods are desired. Deep learning convolutional neural networks (CNNs) - particularly suited to deal with information-sparse data and which offer precise foreground localization—may be utilized to extract track properties from measured CRES signals (called events) with relative computational ease. In this work, we develop a novel machine learning based model which operates a CNN and a support vector machine in tandem to perform this reconstruction. A primary application of our method is shown on simulated CRES signals which mimic those of the Project 8 experiment—a novel effort to extract the unknown absolute neutrino mass value from a precise measurement of tritium β ^− -decay energy spectrum. When compared to a point-clustering based technique used as a baseline, we show a relative gain of 24.1% in event reconstruction efficiency and comparable performance in accuracy of track parameter reconstruction.

Otolith microchemistry provides valuable information about the environmental history of individual fish, but few studies have considered the influence of population or stock on life history traits. This study used the Sr/Ca ratio as an index of habitat use of spinyhead croaker Collichthys lucidus from 2 different populations (northern and southern China populations), including lifetime otolith microchemistry profiles (n = 63 fish) and determinations of natal habitat selection (n = 352 fish). The otolith data revealed 3 life history patterns in C. lucidus: Pattern 1 individuals spent most of their lifetime (>95%) in mesohaline waters (Sr/Ca range: 3-7 mmol mol-1), particularly during early growth; Pattern 2 individuals migrated from hyperhaline waters (Sr/Ca ≥ 7 mmol mol-1) to mesohaline waters; and Pattern 3 individuals migrated from oligohaline waters (Sr/Ca < 3 mmol mol-1) to mesohaline waters. Pattern 2 and Pattern 3 were specific to the northern and southern China populations, respectively, and Pattern 1 was shared by the 2 populations. The otolith core Sr/Ca ratios showed that most C. lucidus selected mesohaline waters as their natal habitat (i.e. 90.6% of 352 total individuals); 12.5% (19 of 152) selected hyperhaline waters and fell within the northern China population, and 7% (14 of 200) selected oligohaline waters and fell within the southern China population. These results indicate that life history diversity exists in this species, as the pattern of habitat use largely differed between the northern and southern China populations. The overall findings highlight that the behavior of different populations should be considered when determining fish migration histories.

piRNAs function as genome defense mechanisms against transposable elements insertions within germ line cells. Recent studies have unraveled that piRNA pathways are not limited to germ cells as initially reckoned, but are instead also found in non-gonadal somatic contexts. Moreover, these pathways have also been reported in bacteria, mollusks and arthropods, associated with safeguard of genomes against transposable elements, regulation of gene expression and with direct consequences in axon regeneration and memory formation. In this Perspective we draw attention to early branching parasitic protozoa, whose genome preservation is an essential function as in late eukaryotes. However, little is known about the defense mechanisms of these genomes. We and others have described the presence of putative PIWI-related machinery members in protozoan parasites. We have described the presence of a PIWI-like protein in Trypanosoma cruzi, bound to small non-coding RNAs (sRNAs) as cargo of secreted extracellular vesicles relevant in intercellular communication and host infection. Herein, we put forward the presence of members related to Argonaute pathways in both Trypanosoma cruzi and Toxoplasma gondii. The presence of PIWI-like machinery in Trypansomatids and Apicomplexa, respectively, could be evidence of an ancestral piRNA machinery that evolved to become more sophisticated and complex in multicellular eukaryotes. We propose a model in which ancient PIWI proteins were expressed broadly and had functions independent of germline maintenance. A better understanding of current and ancestral PIWI/piRNAs will be relevant to better understand key mechanisms of genome integrity conservation during cell cycle progression and modulation of host defense mechanisms by protozoan parasites.

Cyclotron radiation emission spectroscopy (CRES) is a modern approach for determining charged particle energies via high-precision frequency measurements of the emitted cyclotron radiation. For CRES experiments with gas within the fiducial volume, signal and noise dynamics can be modelled by a hidden Markov model. We introduce a novel application of the Viterbi algorithm in order to derive informational limits on the optimal detection of cyclotron radiation signals in this class of gas-filled CRES experiments, thereby providing concrete limits from which future reconstruction algorithms, as well as detector designs, can be constrained. The validity of the resultant decision rules is confirmed using both Monte Carlo and Project 8 data.

The Pacific oyster Crassostrea gigas is an important species living in the intertidal zones. It is of great significance to study the mechanism of oysters to adapt air exposure. In the present study, weighted gene co-expression network analysis (WGCNA) with the transcriptome data of gills and adductor muscle was conducted to investigate the metabolic transformation of C. gigas under air exposure. GO enrichment of modules specifically expressed in adductor muscle of oysters exposed to air for five, seven and nine days revealed the phased expression of respiratory chain, protein turnover and lipid metabolism, indicating the conversion of energy metabolism. During air exposure, “respiratory chain” and “ribosome biogenesis” were enriched in the muscle on the fifth day, suggesting that glycogen metabolism was dominant in the early stages of air exposure. On the seventh day, many terms about the regulation of proteolysis were enriched, indicating that carbohydrates were not be able to meet the metabolic needs in the oyster adductor muscle, and proteins began to be degraded for energy supply. The processes related to lipid metabolism were enriched on the ninth day. The extremely high glycogen content of C. gigas allowed it to maintain a basic metabolic activity for a long time with a conservative compensation strategy. GO and KEGG enrichments of the modules sensitive to air exposure in gills were mainly involved in “response to endoplasmic reticulum stress”, “Endoplasmic Reticulum (ER) to Golgi transport vesicle membrane” and “protein processing in endoplasmic reticulum”. It revealed that the mechanism of oyster adapting to air exposure was a complex regulatory network depending on the ER. Hub gene network and PPI network analyses found that some transcription factors containing zinc finger domains regulated the biochemical reactions for stress adaptation, indicating that the ER, as a regulatory element sensitive to external stress, could regulate apoptosis, autophagy and protein degradation in gills of C. gigas under air exposure. These results would provide new insights into the adaptation of C. gigas to air exposure in terms of energy metabolism and homeostasis.

ObjectivesTo investigate the prevalence, clinical characteristics, and prognosis of thrombocytopenia (TP) in Chinese patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE).MethodsThe study was conducted based on the Chinese SLE Treatment and Research group (CSTAR) registry. Thrombocytopenia was defined as the platelet countResultsOf 2104 patients with SLE, 342 patients (16.3%) were diagnosed with thrombocytopenia. The prevalence of neuropsychiatric SLE, vasculitis, myositis, nephritis, mucocutaneous lesions, pleuritis, fever, leukocytopenia and hypocomplementemia were significantly higher in patients with thrombocytopenia (pConclusionsThrombocytopenia was a common manifestation of SLE and was associated with leukocytopenia, nephritis and severe disease activity. Severe thrombocytopenia tended to occur in long-term and relatively inactive SLE. Patients with SLE-related thrombocytopenia has a decreased long-term survival rate. Long disease duration was an independent risk factor of mortality in patients with thrombocytopenia.

ABSTRACT One-day old chicks were randomly distributed into acute heat stress (AHS) or persistent heat stress (PHS) groups. Each group was further divided into control (CK), and three AHS ages (1, 2,or 3 weeks of age) experimental subgroups. The chicks in AHS subgroups were submitted to acute heat stress (40oC for two hours between 12:00 and 14:00 hours during the weekend) and the effects of heat stress on several daily behaviors were observed. At 8 days of age, the chicks of PHS subgroups were submitted to heat stress (40oC daily). The heat treatment ceased during the weekends and the effects on the behavior were observed three times daily for three consecutive days. Despite recent research which more and more stresses the importance of osteocytes in regulating bone and systemic mineral metabolism, current molecular and functional knowledge of osteocyte properties are still incomplete, mostly due to limited availability of in vitro models.Osteocytes are terminally differentiated dendritic cells, and therefore are not easy to obtain and maintain in primary cultures. As an alternative, osteocyte differentiation can be induced by progressive osteoblast embedding in mineralised extracellular matrix. In this model, which is suitable for reproduction of bone development, the presence of calcified matrix prevents several cell biological methods from being used. Therefore, the osteocyte-like MLO-Y4 cell line continues to be the most widely used cellular system.Here we show that treatment of primary osteoblasts or MC3T3-E1 cells with retinoic acid generates a homogeneous population of ramified cells with osteocyte features, as confirmed by morphological and molecular analyses. The first morphological changes are detectable in primary cells after 2 days of treatment, and in the cell line after 4 days of treatment. Differentiation is complete in 5 and 10 days, respectively, with progressive development of dendrites, loss of the ability to produce extracellular matrix, down-regulation of osteoblast markers, and up-regulation of osteocyte-specific molecules, most notably among them sclerostin.Compared to other published protocols, our method has a number of advantages. It is easy to perform and does not require special instrumentation, it is highly reproducible, and rapidly generates a mature osteocyte population in the complete absence of extracellular matrix, allowing the use of these cells for unlimited biological applications.

To evaluate scallop safety in the Guangzhou seafood market, contents of shellfish toxins in adductor muscle, mantle skirts, gills and visceral mass of scallops were examined using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and mouse unit assay. The results showed that: paralytic shellfish poisoning contents were up to 37.44 μg/100 g by ELISA and 319.99 MU/100 g by mouse unit assay, which did not exceed the limits of national standards (80 μg/100g and 400 MU/100 g); the contents of diarrhetic shellfish poisoning were 142.04 μg/100g and 0.2 MU/100 g, which exceeded the national standard limits (60 μg/100g); neurotoxic shellfish poisoning was undetectable; the contents of amnesic shellfish poisoning reached 220.12 μg/100g (no limit value could be referred to) . In addition, these poisons were present mainly in visceral mass and gills rather than adductor muscle and mantle skirts, suggesting that these toxins accumulate in a tissue-specific manner.

It may be produced most fre­quently by Schistosoma japonicum infection, but reports of S. mansoni presenting as an intracerebral mass lesion are particularly rare. The authors describe the case of a 35-year-old woman with a 3-month history of partial epilep­tic seizures and head­aches. She immigrated to Egypt 4 years ago and had worked in Iraq for 2 years after the immigration. The patient's gen­eral physical and neurological examinations were unremarkable. Magnetic resonance (MR) imaging revealed an enhanc­ing lesion with surrounding edema and mild mass effect in the left frontal lobe. A stereotactic brain biopsy demonstrated intraparenchymal granulomas surrounding S. mansoni eggs. S. mansoni was identified by stool examination. Prednisone (1 mg/kg per day for 1 week, with gradual with­drawal during the following 3 weeks) and praziquantel (2 doses at 20 mg/kg per day) therapy was initiated. The patient's symptoms resolved following medical treatment and the follow-up MR imaging yielded normal findings. This case is the rare imported case of cerebral schistosomiasis in China and the neuroschistosomiasis should be considered as the patient lived in a region in which this disease is endemic.

BackgroundNon-ionizing radiation imaging assessment has been advocated for the patients with adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS). As one of the radiation-free methods, ultrasound imaging has gained growing attention in scoliosis assessment over the past decade. The center of laminae (COL) method has been proposed to measure the spinal curvature in the coronal plane of ultrasound image. However, the reliability and validity of this ultrasound method have not been validated in the clinical setting.ObjectivesTo evaluate the reliability and validity of clinical ultrasound imaging on lateral curvature measurements of AIS with their corresponding magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) measurements.MethodsThirty curves (ranged 10.2°-68.2°) from sixteen patients with AIS were eligible for this study. The ultrasound scan was performed using a 3-D ultrasound unit within the same morning of MRI examination. Two researchers were involved in data collection of these two examinations. The COL method was used to measure the coronal curvature in ultrasound image, compared with the Cobb method in MRI. The intra- and inter-rater reliability of the COL method was evaluated by intra-class correlation coefficient (ICC). The validity of this method was analyzed by paired Student's t-test, Bland-Altman statistics and Pearson correlation coefficient. The level of significance was set as 0.05.ResultsThe COL method showed high intra- and inter-rater reliabilities (both with ICC (2, K) >0.9, p0.9, pConclusionThe ultrasound imaging could provide a reliable and valid measurement of spinal curvature in the coronal plane using the COL method. Further research is needed to validate the proposed ultrasound measurement in larger clinical trial and to optimize the ultrasound scanning and measuring procedure.

We propose a theoretical scheme to speed up adiabatic population transfer in a Josephson artificial qutrit by transitionless quantum driving. At a magic working point, an effective three-level subsystem can be chosen to constitute our qutrit. With Stokes and pump driving, adiabatic population transfer can be achieved in the qutrit by means of stimulated Raman adiabatic passage. Assisted by a counter-diabatic driving, the adiabatic population transfer can be sped up drastically with accessible parameters. Moreover, the accelerated operation is flexibly reversible and highly robust against decoherence effects. Thanks to these distinctive advantages, the present protocol could offer a promising avenue for optimal coherent operations in Josephson quantum circuits.

Excitation of Alfvén modes is commonly viewed as a concern for energetic particle confinement in burning plasmas. The 3.5 MeV alpha particles produced by fusion may be affected as well as other fast ions in both present and future devices. Continuum damping of such modes is one of the key factors that determine their excitation thresholds and saturation levels. This work examines the resonant dissipative response of the Alfvén continuum to an oscillating driving current when the driving frequency is slightly outside the edges of the toroidicity-induced spectral gap. The problem is largely motivated by the need to describe the continuum absorption in the frequency sweeping events. A key element of this problem is the negative interference of the two closely spaced continuum crossing points. We explain why the lower and upper edges of the gap can have very different continuum absorption features. The difference is associated with an eigenmode whose frequency can be arbitrarily close to the upper edge of the gap whereas the lower edge of the gap is always a finite distance away from the closest eigenmode.
