A numerical study of the alpha particle emission rate due to the p-11B fusion reaction based on the respectively obtained Large Helical Device (LHD) plasma parameters in an experiment is performed. First, the total alpha particle emission rate is estimated by employing the beam ion distribution calculation code FIT3D and the fusion reaction rate calculation code FBURN based on the classic confinement of beam ions. Then, the calculation is performed using hydrogen-beam-heated hydrogen plasma parameters and the radial boron density profile obtained from boron drop discharge. The result shows that the total alpha particle emission rate reaches approximately 1014 s−1. Then, based on the radial profile of the alpha particle emission calculated by the FBURN code, the distribution of the first orbit loss of5.78-MeV alpha particles created by the p-11B reaction on the vacuum vessel and the divertor plate is calculated by the collisionless Lorentz orbit code LORBIT. Although most of the alpha particles are lost to the divertor plate, some of the alpha particles are lost on the vacuum vessel. Finally, a feasibility study of alpha particle detection by the existing manipulators and fast ion loss detector position is performed. The number of particles as a function of position shows that a substantial number of alpha particles can be detected. Alpha particles with a pitch angle of ~130 deg can reach manipulator positions. In contrast, particles with pitch angles of ~50 and ~110 deg can reach the fast ion loss detector position. The calculation shows that measurement of alpha particles due to p-11B is thought to be possible using charged particle detectors.

Proton-boron (p11B) fusion is an attractive potential energy source but technically challenging to implement. Developing techniques to realize its potential requires first developing the experimental capability to produce p11B fusion in the magnetically-confined, thermonuclear plasma environment. Here we report clear experimental measurements supported by simulation of p11B fusion with high-energy neutral beams and boron powder injection in a high-temperature fusion plasma (the Large Helical Device) that have resulted in diagnostically significant levels of alpha particle emission. The injection of boron powder into the plasma edge results in boron accumulation in the core. Three 2 MW, 160 kV hydrogen neutral beam injectors create a large population of well-confined, high -energy protons to react with the boron plasma. The fusion products, MeV alpha particles, are measured with a custom designed particle detector which gives a fusion rate in very good relative agreement with calculations of the global rate. This is the first such realization of p11B fusion in a magnetically confined plasma.

Infinite-layer (IL) nickelates are an emerging family of superconductors whose similarities and differences to cuprate superconductors are under intense debate. To date, the IL phase of nickelates can only be reached via topotactic oxygen reduction of the perovskite phase, using H$_2$ gas or reducing agents such as CaH$_2$. While the topotactic reduction method has been widely employed on thin film and polycrystalline powder samples, the reduction of La$_{1-x}$Ca$_x$NiO$_3$ single-crystals with lateral dimensions up to 150 $\mu$m was achieved only recently, using an indirect contact method with CaH$_2$. Here we report the topotactic transformation of much larger LaNiO$_3$ crystals with lateral dimensions of more than one millimeter, via direct contact with CaH$_2$. We characterize the crystalline, magnetic, and electronic properties of the obtained IL LaNiO$_{2}$ crystals by powder and single-crystal x-ray diffraction (XRD), magnetometry, electrical transport, and x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) measurements. The amount of incorporated topotactic hydrogen due to the reduction process is determined by a gas extraction method. In addition, we investigate the evolution of the lattice parameters under hydrostatic pressure up to 12 GPa, using high-resolution synchrotron XRD. Furthermore, we provide a direct comparison of several physical properties of the LaNiO$_{2}$ crystals to their powder and thin film counterparts.

We present recent highlights from the most recent operation phases of Wendelstein 7-X, the most advanced stellarator in the world. Stable detachment with good particle exhaust, low impurity content, and energy confinement times exceeding 100 ms, have been maintained for tens of seconds. Pellet fueling allows for plasma phases with reduced ion-temperature-gradient turbulence, and during such phases, the overall confinement is so good (energy confinement times often exceeding 200 ms) that the attained density and temperature profiles would not have been possible in less optimized devices, since they would have had neoclassical transport losses exceeding the heating applied in W7-X. This provides proof that the reduction of neoclassical transport through magnetic field optimization is successful. W7-X plasmas generally show good impurity screening and high plasma purity, but there is evidence of longer impurity confinement times during turbulence-suppressed phases. The Cs2LiYCl6:Ce crystal (CLYC) is an inorganic scintillator which has been developed for the γ-ray and neutron measurement with the high detection efficiency, high resolution, and no need unfolding technique. To enhance the measurement of the fast neutron, the CLYC with 7Li-enrichment (CLYC7) scintillator is developed. In this work, the response of the CLYC7 detector to γ-ray is obtained using 137Cs γ-ray calibration source and calculated using Monte Carlo N-Particle transport code (MCNP). A comparison of measured and calculated γ-rays spectra is complicated by the fact that physical radiation detectors have finite energy resolution. In this study, we treated detector energy resolution effect by Gaussian energy broadening (GEB) in MCNP pulse height spectra calculation. We observe the parameters in the GEB function which provides simulation spectrum matches the experiment spectrum, especially on the photopeak region. The detail sensitivity of GEB function on CLYC7 scintillation detector is presented in this work.

A new broad-energy, high-resolution gamma ray spectrometer (GRS) with Compton suppression function has been developed recently in the HL-2A tokamak to obtain the gamma ray information in the energy range of 0.1–10 MeV. This is the first time to develop an anti-Compton GRS for a magnetic confinement fusion device. The anticoincidence detector consists of a large-volume high purity germanium (HPGe) crystal (Φ63 × 63 mm2) as the primary detector and eight trapezoidal bismuth germinate (BGO) scintillators (trapezoid crystal with 30 mm thickness) as the secondary detector. The anti-coincidence data processing is implemented by a digital-based data acquisition system with fast digitization and software signal processing technology. Using radioisotope gamma ray sources and Monte Carlo N-Particle code, the energy and efficiency of the spectrometer have been calibrated and quantitatively tested. The Compton continuum suppression factor reaches 4.2, and the energy resolution (Full Width at Half Maximum) of the 1.332 MeV full energy peak for 60Co is 2.1 keV. Measurements of gamma ray spectra with Compton suppression using the spectrometer have been successfully performed during HL-2A discharges with different conditions. The performance of the spectrometer and the first experimental results are presented in this paper.

Studies of energetic particle transport due to energetic-particle-driven Alfvénic instability have progressed using neutron and energetic particle diagnostics in Large Helical Device deuterium plasmas. Alfvénic instability excited by injecting an intensive neutral beam was observed by a magnetic probe and a far-infrared laser interferometer. The interferometer showed Alfvénic instability composed of three modes that existed from the core to the edge of the plasma. A comparison between the observed frequency and shear Alfvén spectra suggested that the mode activity was most likely classified as an Alfvénic avalanche. A neutron fluctuation detector and a fast ion loss detector indicated that Alfvénic instability induced transport and loss of co-going transit energetic ions. The dependence of the drop rate of the neutron signal on the Alfvénic instability amplitude showed that significant transport occurred. Significant transport might be induced by the large amplitude and radially extended multiple modes, as well as a large deviation of the energetic ion orbit from the flux surface.

An energy transfer phenomenon between energetic ions, which cannot be explained only considering the Coulomb scattering process, was observed on a large helical device (LHD). This phenomenon often occurs in fusion reactivity enhancement and fast-ion slowing-down process that can be observed as a delay in the decay time of the D(d,n)3He neutron generation rate. The transferred energy required to induce such a reactivity enhancement or delay in the fast-ion slowing-down time (neutron decay time) was examined based on the Boltzmann−Fokker−Planck analysis in which a discrete energy transfer process, called nuclear elastic scattering (NES), is included. It was shown that even though the cross section of the NES is smaller than that of the Coulomb scattering, enough knock-on population appears in the energetic region in ion distribution function to induce the observable NES effects; thus, enough energy is transferred from beam ions to fast component of bulk ion distribution function indirectly and the transferred energy per unit time via NES is comparable to the Coulomb scattering rate. This study analytically demonstrates that the observed phenomena on LHD can be explained smoothly by considering the alternative indirect energy transfer channel between energetic ions, which can be comparable with the one via Coulomb scattering.

The fast deuteron (non-Maxwellian component) diagnostic method, which is based on the higher resolution optical spectroscopic measurement, has been developed as a powerful tool. Owing to a decrease in the D-H charge-exchange cross section, the diagnostic ability of conventional optical diagnostic methods should be improved for ∼MeV energy deuterons. Because the

Magnetic properties and magnetic structure of the Ba2Mn(PO4)2 antiferromagnet featuring frustrated zigzag chains of Mn2+ ions are reported based on neutron diffraction, density-functional band-structure calculations, as well as temperature- and field-dependent measurements of magnetization and specific heat. A magnetic transition at TN ≃ 5 K marks the onset of the antiferromagnetic order with the propagation vector and the ordered moment of 4.33 ± 0.08μB/Mn2+ at 1.5 K, pointing along the c direction. The direction of the magnetic moment is chosen by single-ion anisotropy, which is relatively weak compared to the isostructural Ni2+ compound. Geometrical frustration has a strong impact on the thermodynamic properties of Ba2Mn(PO4)2, but manifestations of the frustration are different from those in Ba2Ni(PO4)2, where frustration by isotropic exchange couplings is minor, yet strong and competing single-ion anisotropies are present. A spin-flop transition is observed around 2.5 T. The evaluation of the magnetic structure from the ground state via the spin-flop state to the field-polarized ferromagnetic state has been revealed by a comprehensive neutron diffraction study as a function of magnetic field below TN. Finally, a magnetic phase diagram in the H–T plane is obtained.

The vertical neutron camera (VNC) has been developed to measure neutron emission profile in deuterium plasmas of the large helical device (LHD). The experiment on spatial resolution evaluation for VNC was carried out in November 2016 by using a 252 Cf neutron source of 800 MBq. The neutron source was introduced into the LHD vacuum vessel through an aluminum pipe from an upper diagnostics port to the equatorial plane. The source was placed at the following two positions. The first position is just on the cylindrical collimator axis, and the second position is in the middle of two neighboring collimator axes. The stilbene scintillation detectors are aligned radially at the collimator end to detect unscattered fast-neutrons generated in a deuterium plasma. The 3-D neutron transport calculations by using a general-purpose Monte Carlo N-particle code 6 reproduced the experimentally obtained neutron counting rate, indicating that VNC has sufficient spatial resolution and the crosstalk between two neighboring collimators is a fairly small fraction. It is expected that the VNC on LHD will function as a tool for the study on the radial transport of energetic ions.

The world’s first quasi-axisymmetric stellarator, CFQS, is now under construction. The CFQS will be dedicated to studies on the interaction between flow and turbulence, and confinement improvement by suppression of turbulence in connection with proof-of-principle experiment of quasi-axisymmetry. In order to conduct this experimental research, a heavy ion beam probe (HIBP) system is planned to be installed and utilized to measure the radial electric field and its fluctuation in a CFQS plasma. In this paper, an orbit calculation for a probe beam is performed to verify feasibility of the HIBP in the CFQS. The required beam energy, possible ion species, and the observable region in a CFQS plasma are investigated. The beam attenuation by a CFQS plasma is also estimated for different beam ion species. If we use 133Cs+ as a primary probe beam, the required beam energy is expected to be 30∼50 keV, which is relatively easy to handle. In this case the beam attenuation, evaluated by the ratio between the injected and detected beam currents, is 10−3∼10−2 in a CFQS plasma with a line-averaged electron density of 19 m−3. For a higher density plasma, usage of 85Rb+ is better in terms of low-beam-attenuation, and a high signal-to-noise ratio. The HIBP in the CFQS will provide a great opportunity to study physics experimentally, related to the radial electric field, poloidal flow, and turbulence suppression.

Microinstabilities such as ion temperature gradient (ITG) mode and trapped electron mode (TEM) in quasi-axisymmetric (QA) stellarator are investigated by using gyrokinetic Vlasov simulations, where the QA configuration of Chinese first quasi-axisymmetric stellarator is utilized. Extensive parameter scans with respect to the density and temperature gradients for the zero beta cases identify the microinstability maps that indicate the transition boundary among ITG and TEM. It is found that, in particular for the modes with the ion-gyroradius scale, a relatively more stabilized regime appears along the transition boundary of ITG–TEM. Such a valley-like stability structure is not observed in the other cases with the sub-ion-gyroradius-scale. A stabilization effect attributed to the hollow density profile is also demonstrated.

Since the last IAEA Fusion Energy Conference in 2018, significant progress of the experimental program of HL-2A has been achieved on developing advanced plasma physics, edge localized mode (ELM) control physics and technology. Optimization of plasma confinement has been performed. In particular, high-β N H-mode plasmas exhibiting an internal transport barrier have been obtained (normalized plasma pressure β N reached up to 3). Injection of impurity improved the plasma confinement. ELM control using resonance magnetic perturbation or impurity injection has been achieved in a wide parameter regime, including types I and III. In addition, impurity seeding with supersonic molecular beam injection or laser blow-off techniques has been successfully applied to actively control the plasma confinement and instabilities, as well as plasma disruption with the aid of disruption prediction. Disruption prediction algorithms based on deep learning are developed. A prediction accuracy of 96.8% can be reached by assembling a convolutional neural network. Furthermore, transport resulting from a wide variety of phenomena such as energetic particles and magnetic islands has been investigated. In parallel with the HL-2A experiments, the HL-2M mega-ampere class tokamak was commissioned in 2020 with its first plasma. Key features and capabilities of HL-2M are briefly presented.

A Stirling engine is based on a thermodynamic cycle; a temperature difference causes flywheel rotation. Because the arbitrary (stochastic) heat resources contact some of the systems that generate the work (i.e., the energy), Stirling engines remain important in the present era of Sustainable Development Goals because of their broad applicability. This study focuses on a nano-scale “β-type” Stirling engine, specifically concerning a model for numerical simulation. We perform molecular dynamics simulation of the two-dimensional model (using hundreds of particles) and calculate the thermal efficiency. We figured out the minimal necessary conditions for stable rotation, as well as the lower limits of particle numbers and temperature differences for autonomous thermodynamic cycles.

Microwave application technologies such as microwave heating, microwave assisted chemistry, etc. are of the innovative green technologies. In this paper, a chip-size microwave applicator with plural microchannels is designed at 24 GHz band. It consists of the post-wall waveguide and two or more micro channels arranged among the metallic posts. This applicator realizes microwave heating at different temperatures for the microchannels embedded in the separate places. The temperature-time profiles of the applicator are examined numerically. An experimental verification is performed with microwave power sources of about 0.7 W.

A scintillator-based fast-ion loss detector (FILD) with a fast camera acquisition system has been installed on the Experimental Advanced Superconducting Tokamak (EAST), which can simultaneously measure the energy and pitch angle of the escaped fast ions in the scintillator plane. With the development of high-power external heating systems, the FILD system has been developed and upgraded with a photomultiplier tube (PMT) system to improve the temporal resolution to study fast-ion behaviors during neutral beam injection (NBI) heating and under resonant magnetic perturbation (RMP) discharge conditions. Photon imaging on the scintillator is divided into two parts by an optical splitter; one part is transferred to the fast charge-coupled device (CCD) system, and the other is transmitted to the PMT through an array of fibers. The FILD system is upgraded with a 25-channel (5 × 5) PMT (Hamamatsu Photonics, type no. H10492-003) array and a data acquisition system with a sampling rate of 2 MHz per channel. Preliminary experimental results show that the magnetic resonance perturbation affects the fast-ion losses. This paper presents the extended PMT acquisition system and the initial results of the FILD diagnostic relating to prompt losses, and the beam ion losses due to RMP are discussed.

Understanding energetic particle transport due to magnetohydrodynamic instabilities excited by energetic particles is essential to apprehend alpha particle confinement in a fusion burning plasma. In the large helical device (LHD), beam ion and deuterium–deuterium fusion-born triton transport due to resistive interchange mode destabilized by helically-trapped energetic ions (EIC) are studied employing comprehensive neutron diagnostics, such as the neutron flux monitor and a newly developed scintillating fiber detector characterized by high detection efficiency. Beam ion transport due to EIC is studied in deuterium plasmas with full deuterium or hydrogen/deuterium beam injections. The total neutron emission rate (S n) measurement indicates that EIC induces about a 6% loss of passing transit beam ions and a 60% loss of helically-trapped ions. The loss rate of helically-trapped ions, which drive EIC, is larger than the loss rate of passing transit beam ions. Furthermore, the drop of S n increasing linearly with the EIC amplitude shows that barely confined beam ions existing near the confinement-loss boundary are lost due to EIC. In full deuterium conditions, a study of deuterium–deuterium fusion-born triton transport due to EIC is performed by time-resolved measurement of total secondary deuterium–tritium neutron emission rate (S n_DT). Drop of S n_DT increases substantially with EIC amplitude to the third power and reaches up to 30%. The relation shows that not only tritons confined in confined-loss boundary, but also tritons confined in the inner region of a plasma, are substantially transported.

Toroidal Alfvén eigenmode (TAE) bursts are often observed in relatively low-magnetic-field experiments in the Large Helical Device (LHD) with tangential nuclear beam injection. During TAE bursts, hole-clump pairs in real space were observed in previous studies. In order to observe the behavior of the energetic particles during TAE bursts in more detail, a tangential E-parallel-B-type neutral particle analyzer (E|B-NPA) was upgraded to improve the time resolution up to 100 kilo samples per second by updating its measurement electronic circuits. Using this high time resolution E|B-NPA, the clump formations are clearly observed in real space. In order to analyze the observed particles with high time resolution, the conditional averaging technique is used. The lost energetic particles with 150 keV were initially observed just before the TAE burst, and the energy decreases faster than the classical slowing down time. The energetic particles transported by the TAE burst were detected with energy slowing down time of 6–8 ms for more than 6 ms after the TAE burst had finished. According to the orbit trace code Lorentz orbit (LORBIT) calculation, the particle pitch angle and radial location (ρ = r/a99) of the energetic particles resonating with the TAE mode frequency are increased by 5° and 0.2, respectively, during TAE bursts. These results are consistent with the observed downward frequency chirping of the magnetic fluctuation. By comparing the energy of the detected particles by E|B-NPA and the corresponding frequency of the magnetic fluctuation, the pitch angles of the resonant particles are considered to be 15°–25° at 150 keV before they are transported by the TAE burst. The frequency chirping of the magnetic fluctuation shows good agreement with the observed clump structure by considering the pitch angle of the resonant particles.

In order to study fast ion confinement and transport mechanisms both in quiescent plasmas and in the presence of magneto-hydrodynamic (MHD) activity, an electric field parallel to the magnetic field type neutral particle analyzer (E|B-NPA) was installed using Micro-Channel Plates (MCPs) in the Large Helical Device (LHD). The E|B-NPA is an established diagnostic used to measure the energy distribution of charge exchange neutral particles escaping from plasmas corresponding to hydrogen, deuterium, and tritium, respectively. The LHD deuterium experimental campaign started in 2017. To obtain more details of MHD behavior, we improved on time resolution performance of the E|B-NPA using a high-speed Pre-Amplifier and Discriminator (PAD) and Latching Scaler Module (LSM). For the last LHD experimental campaign, the E|B-NPA was installed on nearly the equatorial plane of the vacuum chamber to measure the passing energetic particles generated by tangentially injected neutral beams. As the results of the E|B-NPA commissioning, it is confirmed that the E|B-NPA successfully detected the energetic particles and obtained the energy distributions corresponding to hydrogen. Also, the effect of the neutron to E|B-NPA is estimated using the other neutron diagnostics during the experiments.

For the first time supersonic molecular beam injection (SMBI) and cluster jet injection (CJI) were applied to mitigate edge-localized modes (ELMs) in HL-2A successfully. The ELM frequency increased by a factor of 2–3 and the heat flux on the divertor target plates decreased by 50% on average after SMBI or CJI. Energetic particle induced modes were observed in different frequency ranges with high-power electron cyclotron resonance heating (ECRH). The high frequency (200–350 kHz) of the modes with a relatively small amplitude was close to the gap frequency of the toroidicity-induced Alfven eigenmode. The coexistent multi-mode magnetic structures in the high-temperature and low-collision plasma could affect the plasma transport dramatically. Long-lived saturated ideal magnetohydrodynamic instabilities during strong neutral beam injection heating could be suppressed by high-power ECRH. The absolute rate of nonlinear energy transfer between turbulence and zonal flows was measured and the secondary mode competition between low-frequency (LF) zonal flows (ZFs) and geodesic acoustic modes (GAMs) was identified, which demonstrated that ZFs played an important role in the L–H transition. The spontaneously generated E × B shear flow was identified to be responsible for the generation of a large-scale coherent structure (LSCS), which provided unambiguous experimental evidence for the LSCS generation mechanism. New meso-scale electric potential fluctuations (MSEFs) at frequency f ∼ 10.5 kHz with two components of n = 0 and m/n = 6/2 were also identified in the edge plasmas for the first time. The MSEFs coexisted and interacted with magnetic islands of m/n = 6/2, turbulence and LF ZFs.

Measurements of the time-integrated triton burnup for deuterium plasma in Korea Superconducting Tokamak Advanced Research (KSTAR) have been performed following the simultaneous detection of the d-d and d-t neutrons. The d-d neutrons were measured using a 3He proportional counter, fission chamber, and activated indium sample, whereas the d-t neutrons were detected using activated silicon and copper samples. The triton burnup ratio from KSTAR discharges is found to be in the range 0.01%–0.50% depending on the plasma conditions. The measured burnup ratio is compared with the prompt loss fraction of tritons calculated with the Lorentz orbit code and the classical slowing-down time. The burnup ratio is found to increase as plasma current and classical slowing-down time increase.

Since the 2016 Fusion Energy Conference, the HL-2A team has focused on the investigations on the following areas: (i) pedestal dynamics and L-H transition, (ii) techniques of ELM control, (iii) turbulence and transport, (iv) energetic particle physics. The HL-2A results demonstrated that the increase of mean shear flow plays a key role in triggering L-I and I-H transitions, while the change of flow is mainly induced by the ion pressure gradient. Both mitigation and suppression of ELMs were realized by laser blow-off seeded impurity (Al, Fe, W). The 30% Ne mixture supersonic molecular beam injection seeding also robustly induced ELM mitigation. The ELMs were mitigated by low-hybrid current drive. The stabilization of m/n = 1/1 ion fishbone activities by electron cyclotron resonance heating was found on the HL-2A. A new m/n = 2/1 ion fishbone activity was observed recently, and the modelling indicated that passing fast ions dominantly contribute to the driving of 2/1 fishbone. The non-linear coupling between the toroidal Alfven eigenmode and tearing mode (TM) led to the generation of a high frequency mode with the toroidal mode number n = 0. The turbulence was modulated by TM when the island width exceeds a threshold and the modulation is localized merely in the inner area of the islands. Meanwhile, turbulence radial spread took place across the island region.

We studied the short proton free induction decay signals and the broad ^1H NMR spectra of Mg(OH)2 and Ca(OH)2 powders at 77-355 K and 42 MHz using pulsed NMR techniques. Using a Gaussian-type back extrapolation procedure for the obscured data of the proton free induction decay signals, we obtained more precise values of the second moments of the Fourier-transformed broad NMR spectra than those in a previous report [Y. Itoh and M. Isobe, J. Phys. Soc. Jpn. Vol. 84, 113601 (2015)] and compared with the theoretical second moments. The decrease in the second moment could not account for the large decrease in the magnitude of the intrinsic proton spin-lattice relaxation rate 1/T_1 from Mg(OH)2 to Ca(OH)2. The analysis of 1/T_1 $propto$ exp(-E_g/k_BT) with E_g~0.01 eV points to a local hopping mechanism, and that of 1/T_1 $propto$ T^n with n~0.5 points to an anharmonic rattling mechanism., 5 pages, 5 figures

Calorimetric measurements and optical observations have been performed to investigate the effect of chirality on a bent-core nematic (BCN) material which can exhibit an amorphous blue phase (BPIII) over a wide temperature range by mixing with a highly chiral dopant. It was found that the first-order character of the nematic (N)–isotropic (I) phase transition of the host BCN sample was clearly weakened by increasing the chiral dopant concentration and eventually moved into the supercritical evolution. The colors of the textures also showed a blue shift when increasing the chiral concentration.

In situ characterization of silicon micro channel reactor with supported platinum alumina catalyst prepared on the channel wall was conducted with FT-IR microscope under propane flow, propene flow and cyclohexane flow. Surface π-allylic species along with surface OH group were observed at 373 K under propane or propene flow. These species were rather stable under N2 flow and H2 flow. The reactor was active for dehydrogenation of cyclohexane to produce benzene and cyclohexene. In situ FT-IR observation under flow of cyclohexane at 473 K, decrease of reactant, increase of products, a maximum of π-allylic and C C species were observed from inlet toward outlet. The maximum absorbance of the intermediate shifted with flow rate. These suggested consecutive reaction path and existence of film resistance.

Energetic ion-driven magnetohydrodynamic instabilities such as Alfven eigenmodes (AEs), energetic particle modes (EPMs), and their impacts on energetic ion confinement are being studied on the Larg...

This paper describes 1) representative results on excitation of energetic-particle mode (EPM) and toroidicity-induced Alfven eigenmode (TAE) and consequent beam-ion losses in CHS, and 2) recent results on beam-ion transport and/or losses while EPMs are destabilized in LHD. Bursting EPMs and TAEs are often excited by co-injected beam ions in the high-beam ion pressure environment and give a significant effect on co-going beam ions in both experiments. It seems that in CHS, resonant beam ions are lost within a relatively short-time scale once they are anomalously transported due to energetic-ion driven MHD modes, whereas unlike CHS, redistribution of beam ions due to energetic-ion driven MHD modes is seen in LHD, suggesting that not all anomalously transported beam ions escape from the plasma.

Suppression of anomalous radial transport of alpha particles and beam ions due to energetic ion driven MHD in-stabilities is one of the critical issues toward D-T burning plasma experiments in toroidal magnetic confinement devices such as tokamaks and stellarator/helical devices. This paper reports the characteristics of energetic ion driven MHD modes such as Alfven eigenmodes (AEs) and their effects on transport of energetic ions and bulk plasma in the Large Helical Device (LHD) and some different types of stellarator/helical devices. Beneficial impacts of AEs on toroidal plasma confinement are also included. These experimental results on AEs are compared with those in tokamaks, and the important similarities and differences are pointed out that can lead to better understanding of AEs in toroidal plasmas (© 2010 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. We have measured the far-infrared reflectivity spectra of the sodium vanadium oxide η-Na1.3V2O5 polycrystals in the wide temperature (80–300 K) and frequency (150–1500 cm−1) range. Appearance of new phonon oscillators, phonon oscillator mode splitting and step-like shift of TO and LO frequencies at low temperatures are correlated with the charge-ordering phase transition, which takes place at about 120 K in this vanadium oxide.

A phenomenological probe model was developed for quantitative fast-ion-measurement using a hybrid directional probe (HDP), which is a directional probe to measure ion current and heat flux at the same position. The secondary electrons due to fast-ion-injection onto the probe surface enhances the ion-saturation-current, thus a thermal probe method was required for quantitative measurement of fast ions. The model gives a simple expression of the secondary electron yield as a function of ion currents and heat fluxes measured by the HDP, and can determine the net fast-ion-current without the calibrations of the thermal probe method. The model was applied to the experimental results of fast-ion-measurements using a HDP in CHS, and the secondary electron yield obtained by the model agrees with the calibration results of the HDP. The internal structural measurements of electric field and density using twin heavy ion beam probes have been performed to elucidate the nonlinear evolution of the magneto-hydro-dynamic (MHD) bursty phenomenon driven by the interaction with high-energy particles in a toroidal plasma. The results have given the finest observation of the internal structure of plasma quantities, such as electric field, density and magnetic field distortion, which nonlinearly develop during the MHD phenomenon. In particular, the finding of a new kind of oscillating zonal flow driven by interaction between energetic particles and MHD modes should be emphasized for burning state plasmas.

Polarized Raman spectra of sodium vanadium oxide η - Na 1.3 V 2 O 5 single crystals were measured over wide temperature and frequency ranges. In total 27 first-order Raman modes, as well as overtones and combinational lines, are observed. For the charge ordered phase no appearances of new phonon- or spin-related Raman modes are registered on lowering the temperature to 10 K. The phase transition at about 100 K is manifested through an abrupt change of the phonon mode frequencies and dampings.

An extended application of Gabour's wavelet to bicoherence analysis succeeds in resolving the instantaneous structure of three wave couplings between disparate scale electric field fluctuations in the high temperature core in a toroidal plasma device named the compact helical system. The obtained results quantify an intermittent linkage between turbulence and zonal flows—a highlighted issue in the present plasma research. This is the first demonstration that the intermittent nature of the three wave coupling should underlie the turbulence power modulation due to zonal flows.

Confinement degradation of energetic ions due to Alfven eigenmodes (AEs) has been investigated with negative ion based neutral beam injection at ~370 keV into JT-60U weak shear plasmas. AEs with a rapid frequency sweeping and then saturation as the minimum value of the safety factor decreases have been observed. This frequency behaviour can be explained by the reversed-shear induced AE (RSAE) and the transition from RSAEs to the toroidicity-induced AEs (TAEs). The associated change in the charge exchange neutral particle flux suggests energetic ion transport due to these AEs. The total neutron emission reduction rate in the presence of these AEs is evaluated by calculation using the orbit following Monte-Carlo code taking into account the change in bulk plasmas. The evaluation indicates confinement of energetic ions is degraded due to these AEs. In particular, it is found that the confinement degradation of energetic ions is maximum during the transition from RSAEs to TAEs and the maximum reduction rate (ΔSn/Sn)MAX is estimated to be ~45%.
