Abstract

Abstract During the second long shutdown period of the CERN accelerator complex (LS2, 2019-2021), several upgrade activities took place at the n_TOF facility. The most important have been the replacement of the spallation target with a next generation nitrogen-cooled lead target. Additionally, a new experimental area, at a very short distance from the target assembly (the NEAR Station) was established. In this paper, the core commissioning actions of the new installations are described. The improvement in the n_TOF infrastructure was accompanied by several detector development projects. All these upgrade actions are discussed, focusing mostly on the future perspectives of the n_TOF facility. Furthermore, some indicative current and future measurements are briefly reported.

Abstract

Neutron-induced cross sections represent the main nuclear input to models of stellar and Big-Bang nucleosynthesis. While (n,γ) reactions are relevant for the formation of elements heavier than iron, (n,p) and (n,α) reactions can play an important role in specific cases. The time-of-flight method is routinely used at n_TOF to experimentally determine the cross section data. In addition, recent upgrades of the facility will allow the use of activation techniques as well, possibly opening the way to a systematic study of neutron interaction with radioactive isotopes. In the last 20 years n_TOF has provided a large amount of experimental data for Nuclear Astrophysics. Our plan is to carry on challenging measurements and produce nuclear data in the next decades as well.

Abstract

Two particles coincidences of identified 15C and unidentified particle from 9 13 Be C + collisions are analyzed as three particles exit channel 9 13 15 3 Be C C He (, ) α and 9 13 15 4 Be C C He (, ) τ . In spectrum of α −τ relative energy 7 Be well-known states with 7 ( ) E Be x = 4,7, 6,73 and 9,2 МeV are identified and other at 7 ( ) E Be x ~11,6, 13, (14,1), 15,7 and 18 MeV are also possible. Situation that states of 7 Be with 7 ( ) E Be x = 7,21 and ~ 10 МеВ are not observed in those reactions are explained their not α −τ cluster structure.

Abstract

Many-particle exit channels 9 13 13 5 Be C C He (, ) α and 9 13 13 8 . . (, ) Be C C Be n g s from the 9 13 Be C + interaction have been experimentally investigated. Information has been received on 8 Be n g s. . − and 5 α − He configurations associated with 9 Be excitation states. Comparison of these configurations with calculations based on alpha-cluster conception with a valence neutron is discussed.

Abstract

The direct observation of high-energy cosmic rays, up to the PeV energy region, will increasingly rely on highly performing calorimeters, and the physics performance will be primarily determined by their geometrical acceptance and energy resolution. Thus, it is extremely important to optimize their geometrical design, granularity and absorption depth, with respect to the totalmass of the apparatus, which is amongst the most important constraints for a space mission. CaloCube is an homogeneous calorimeter whose basic geometry is cubic and isotropic, obtained by filling the cubic volume with small cubic scintillating crystals. In this way it is possible to detect particles arriving from every direction in space, thus maximizing the acceptance. This design summarizes a three-year R&D activity, aiming to both optimize and study the full-scale performance of the calorimeter, in the perspective of a cosmic-ray space mission, and investigate a viable technical design by means of the construction of several sizable prototypes. A large scale prototype, made of a mesh of 5x5x18 CsI(Tl) crystals, has been constructed and tested on high-energy particle beams at CERN SPS accelerator. Abstract

Background: It has been recently suggested that hydrogen ingestion into the helium shell of massive stars could lead to high C13 and N15 excesses when the shock of a core-collapse supernova passes through its helium shell. This prediction questions the origin of extremely high C13 and N15 abundances observed in rare presolar SiC grains which is usually attributed to classical novae. In this context the N13(α,p)O16 reaction plays an important role since it is in competition with N13β+ decay to C13. Purpose: The N13(α,p)O16 reaction rate used in stellar evolution calculations comes from the Caughlan and Fowler compilation with very scarce information on the origin of this rate and with no associated uncertainty. The goal of this work is to provide a recommended N13(α,p)O16 reaction rate, based on available experimental data, with a meaningful statistical uncertainty. Method: Unbound nuclear states in the F17 compound nucleus were studied using the spectroscopic information of the analog states in O17 nucleus that were measured at the Tandem-Alto facility using the C13(Li7,t)O17 α-particle-transfer reaction. The α-particle spectroscopic factors were derived using a finite-range distorted-wave Born approximation analysis. This spectroscopic information was used to calculate a recommended N13(α,p)O16 reaction rate with meaningful uncertainty using a Monte Carlo approach. Results: The N13(α,p)O16 reaction rate from the present work is found to be within a factor of two of the previous evaluation in the temperature range of interest, with a typical uncertainty of a factor ≈2-3. The source of this uncertainty has been identified to come from the three main contributing resonances at Erc.m.=221, 741, and 959 keV. This new error estimation translates to an overall uncertainty in the C13 production of a factor of 50 when using the lower and upper reaction rates in the conditions relevant for the N13(α,p)O16 activation. Conclusions: The main source of uncertainty on the re-evaluated N13(α,p)O16 reaction rate currently comes from the uncertain α-particle width of relevant F17 states.

Abstract

The 10B+10B reactions are measured at beam energies of 50 and 72.2 MeV. The large spin of 10B nucleus (Jύ= 3+) makes this reaction particularly suitable to populate high spin states in the exit channels. Population and decay of different states in A≈10 mass region is studied, and the results are discussed from the structure point of view. In particular, a new state in 12C at Ex= 24.4 MeV is observed to be strongly populated in the triple α-particle coincidences.

Abstract

In this contribution, a brief analysis of an experiment performed at LNS-INFN with the 30 and 52 MeV \(^7\)Li beam and the \(^7\)LiF and \(^6\)LiF targets is given. The \(^7\)Li+\(^{6,7}\)Li reactions are measured to get information on different types of structures of several light nuclei. Special attention is paid to a search for molecular states in \(^{10}\)B and \(^{10}\)Be. Another goal is to find information for states with different cluster configurations in \(^7\)He, \(^9\)Be and \(^{10-12}\)B. The experimental setup consists of four telescopes covering polar angles in range from 20\(^{\circ }\) to 90\(^{\circ }\) and providing particle identification using traditional \({\varDelta }\)E-E techniques. The contribution includes previously published Uroic et al. (Eur Phys J A, 51, 93, 2015, [1]) procedures as well as the remaining plans for analysis.

Abstract

The ELI-NP facility, currently being built in Bucharest, Romania, will deliver an intense and almost monochromatic gamma beam with tunable energy between 0.2 and 20 MeV. The challenging energy bandwidth of [Formula: see text]0.5% will be adjusted through the collimation system, while the main beam parameters will be measured through a devoted gamma-beam characterization system.[Formula: see text] The gamma-beam characterization system, designed by the EuroGammaS collaboration, consists of four elements: a Compton spectrometer that measures the gamma energy spectrum; a sampling calorimeter for a fast combined measurement of the beam average energy and its intensity, which will be used also as a monitor during machine commissioning and development; a nuclear resonant scattering system for absolute energy inter-calibration of the other detectors; and a gamma beam profile imager to be used for alignment and diagnostics purposes. The collimation and characterization system will be presented in this article. These systems have already been built and tested, while the delivery at ELI-NP facility and the final commissioning is scheduled by Fall 2018.

Abstract

In March 2013, the NEMO Phase 2 tower has been successfully installed in the Capo Passero site, at a depth of 3500 m and 80 km off from the southern coast of Sicily. The unfurled tower is 450 m high; it is composed of 8 mechanical floors, for a total amount of 32 PMTs and various instruments for environmental measurements. The tower positioning is achieved by an acoustic system. The tower is continuously acquiring and transmitting all the measured signals to shore. Data reduction is completely performed in the Portopalo shore station by a dedicated computing facility connected to the persistent storage system at LNS, in Catania. Results from the last 9 months of acquisition will be presented. In particular, the analyzed optical rates, showing stable and low baseline values, are compatible with the contribution mainly of 40K light emission, with a small percentage of light bursts due to bioluminescence. These features reveal the optimal nature of the Capo Passero abyssal site to host a km3-sized Neutrino Telescope. © 2014 IOP Publishing Ltd and Sissa Medialab srl.

Abstract

This paper presents values of complete fusion cross sections deduced from activation measurements for the reactions $\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}^{6}\mathrm{Li}+\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}^{120}\mathrm{Sn}$ and $\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}^{7}\mathrm{Li}+\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}^{119}\mathrm{Sn}$, and for a projectile energy range from 17.5 to 28 MeV in the center-of-mass system. A new deconvolution analysis technique is used to link the basic activation data to the actual fusion excitation function. The complete fusion cross sections above the barrier are suppressed by about $70%$ and $85%$ with respect to the universal fusion function, used as a standard reference, in the $\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}^{6}\mathrm{Li}$ and $\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}^{7}\mathrm{Li}$ induced reactions, respectively. From a comparison of the excitation functions of the two systems at energies below the barrier, no significant differences can be observed, despite the two systems have different $n$-transfer $Q$ values. This observation is supported by the results of coupled reaction channels (CRC) calculations.

Abstract

The direct observation of high-energy cosmic rays, up to the PeV region, will increasingly rely on highly performing calorimeters, and the physics performance will be primarily determined by their geometrical acceptance and energy resolution. Thus, it is extremely important to optimize their geometrical design, granularity, and absorption depth, with respect to the total mass of the apparatus, which is among the most important constraints for a space mission. Calocube is a homogeneous calorimeter whose basic geometry is cubic and isotropic, so as to detect particles arriving from every direction in space, thus maximizing the acceptance; granularity is obtained by filling the cubic volume with small cubic scintillating crystals. This design forms the basis of a three-year R & D activity which has been approved and financed by INFN. A comparative study of different scintillating materials has been performed. Optimal values for the size of the crystals and spacing among them have been studied. Different geometries, besides the cubic one, and the possibility to implement dual-readout techniques have been investigated. A prototype, instrumented with CsI(Tl) cubic crystals, has been constructed and tested with particle beams. An overview of the obtained results will be presented and the perspectives for future space experiments will be discussed.

Abstract

CaloCube is a homogeneous calorimeter whose geometry allows an almost isotropic response, so as to detect particles arriving from every direction in space, thus maximizing the acceptance. A comparative study of different scintillating materials and mechanical structures has been performed by means of Monte Carlo simulation. The scintillation-Cherenkov dual read-out technique has been also considered and its benefit evaluated.

Abstract

A Gamma Beam Characterisation System has been designed by the EuroGammaS association for the commissioning and development of the Extreme Light Infrastructure-Nuclear Physics Gamma Beam System (ELI-NP-GBS) to be installed in Magurele, Romania. The characterisation system consists of four elements: a Compton spectrometer, a sampling calorimeter, a nuclear resonant scattering spectrometer (NRSS) and a beam profile imager. In this paper, the nuclear resonant scattering spectrometer system, designed to perform an absolute energy calibration for the gamma beam, will be described.

Abstract

A Gamma Beam System (GBS), designed by the EuroGammaS collaboration, will be implemented for the ELI-NP facility in Magurele, Romania. The facility will deliver an intense gamma beam, obtained by collimatio of the emerging radiation from inverse Compton interaction. Gamma beam energy range will span from 0.2 up to 19.5 MeV with unprecedented performances in terms of brilliance, photon flux and energy bandwidth. For the characterisation of the gamma beam during the commissioning and normal operation, a full detection system has been designed to measure energy spectrum, beam intensity, space and time profiles. The gamma-beam characterisation system consists of four elements: a Compton spectrometer, to measure and monitor the photon energy spectrum, in particular the energy bandwidth; a sampling calorimeter, for a fast combined measurement of the beam average energy and its intensity; a nuclear resonant scattering spectrometer, for absolute beam energy calibration and inter-calibration of the other detector elements; and finally a beam profile imager to be used for alignment and diagnostics purposes. In this paper, a general overview of the ELI-NP gamma characterisation system will be given and the NRSS system will be in particular discussed.

Abstract

CaloCube is an R&D project borne to develop a novel calorimeter design, optimized for high-energy cosmic ray measurements in space. A small prototype made of CsI(Tl) elements has been built and tested on particle beams. A final version, made of 5×5×18 crystals and with dual readout (two photodiodes for each crystal), to cover the full required dynamic range, is under construction and will be tested at CERN SPS in Summer 2016. The dual readout compensation technique were developed and the feasibility to extract ÄŒ erenkov signals from CsI crystals verified.

Abstract

The direct measurement of the cosmic-ray spectrum, up to the knee region, is one of the instrumental challenges for next generation space experiments. The main issue for these measurements is a steeply falling spectrum with increasing energy, so the physics performance of the space calorimeters are primarily determined by their geometrical acceptance and energy resolution. CaloCube is a three-year R&D; project, approved and financed by INFN in 2014, aiming to optimize the design of a space-born calorimeter. The peculiarity of the design of CaloCube is its capability of detecting particles coming from any direction, and not only those on its upper surface. To ensure that the quality of the measurement does not depend on the arrival direction of the particles, the calorimeter will be designed as homogeneous and isotropic as possible. In addition, to achieve a high discrimination power for hadrons and nuclei with respect to electrons, the sensitive elements of the calorimeter need to have a fine 3-D sampling capability. In order to optimize the detector performances with respect to the total mass of the apparatus, which is the most important constraint for a space launch, a comparative study of different scintillating materials has been performed using detailed Monte Carlo simulation based on the FLUKA package. In parallel to simulation studies, a prototype consisting in 14 layers of 3 x 3 CsI(Tl) crystals per layer has been assembled and tested with particle beams. An overview of the obtained results during the first two years of the project will be presented and the future of the detector will be discussed too.

Abstract

The ELI-NP Gamma Beam System will deliver an intense gamma beam, in an energy range from 1 to 20 MeV, with unprecedented specifications in terms of brilliance, photon flux and energy bandwidth. A characterization system providing a measurement of the energy spectrum, intensity, space and time profile of the beam is essential for the commissioning and the development of the source, as well as to demonstrate the performance achieved. The technical specifications of the gamma beam prevents to use any traditional gamma spectroscopic detector. A specific system equipped with four basic elements is under development: a sampling calorimeter, for a fast combined measurement of the beam average energy and intensity; a Compton spectrometer, for photon energy spectrum measuring and monitoring; a nuclear resonant scattering spectrometer, for an absolute beam energy calibration and a beam profile imager to be used for alignment and diagnostics purposes. An overview of the ELI-NP gamma characterization system will be given in this work, with a focus on the calorimeter working principle, its expected performances and some preliminary prototype tests.

Abstract

In March 2013, the Nemo Phase-2 tower was successfully deployed at 80 km off-shore Capo Passero (Italy) at 3500 m depth. The tower operated continuously until August 2014. We present the results of the atmospheric muon analysis from the data collected in 411 days of live time. The zenith-angle distribution of atmospheric muons was measured and results compared with Monte Carlo simulations. The associated depth intensity relation was then measured and compared with previous measurements and theoretical predictions.

Abstract

The experimental elastic scattering angular distributions of the collisions involving the weakly bound nuclei 6,7 Li and the halo nucleus 6 He on the same 64 Zn target at several energies around the Coulomb barrier were measured at the Laboratori Nazionali del Sud (LNS, Italy), and the Cyclotron Research Center, Louvain La Neuve (Belgium), respectively. The experimental elastic scattering angular distributions of the 6,7 Li + 64 Zn systems have been analyzed within the continuumdiscretized coupled-channels method, while the 6 He + 64 Zn data have been compared with both continuum-discretized coupled-channels and coupled-reaction-channels calculations.

Abstract

The NEMO Phase-2 tower is the first detector which was operated underwater for more than one year at the "record" depth of 3500 m. It was designed and built within the framework of the NEMO (NEutrino Mediterranean Observatory) project. The 380 m high tower was successfully installed in March 2013 80 km offshore Capo Passero (Italy). This is the first prototype operated on the site where the italian node of the KM3NeT neutrino telescope will be built. The installation and operation of the NEMO Phase-2 tower has proven the functionality of the infrastructure and the operability at 3500 m depth. A more than one year long monitoring of the deep water characteristics of the site has been also provided. In this paper the infrastructure and the tower structure and instrumentation are described. The results of long term optical background measurements are presented. The rates show stable and low baseline values, compatible with the contribution of 40K light emission, with a small percentage of light bursts due to bioluminescence. Abstract

Intense and purified radioactive beam of post-accelerated $^{14}$O was used to study the low-lying states in the unbound $^{15}$F nucleus. Exploiting resonant elastic scattering in inverse kinematics with a thick target, the second excited state, a resonance at E$\_R$=4.757(6)(10)~MeV with a width of $\Gamma$=36(5)(14)~keV was measured for the first time with high precision. The structure of this narrow above-barrier state in a nucleus located two neutrons beyond the proton drip line was investigated using the Gamow Shell Model in the coupled channel representation with a $^{12}$C core and three valence protons. It is found that it is an almost pure wave function of two quasi-bound protons in the $2s\_{1/2}$ shell., Comment: 8 pages, 2 figures, 1 table, Submitted to Phys. Lett. B

Abstract

A prototype detection unit of the KM3NeT deep-sea neutrino telescope has been installed at 3500m depth 80 km offshore the Italian coast. KM3NeT in its final configuration will contain several hundreds of detection units. Each detection unit is a mechanical structure anchored to the sea floor, held vertical by a submerged buoy and supporting optical modules for the detection of Cherenkov light emitted by charged secondary particles emerging from neutrino interactions. This prototype string implements three optical modules with 31 photomultiplier tubes each. These optical modules were developed by the KM3NeT Collaboration to enhance the detection capability of neutrino interactions. The prototype detection unit was operated since its deployment in May 2014 until its decommissioning in July 2015. Reconstruction of the particle trajectories from the data requires a nanosecond accuracy in the time calibration. A procedure for relative time calibration of the photomultiplier tubes contained in each optical module is described. This procedure is based on the measured coincidences produced in the sea by the $$^{40}$$40K background light and can easily be expanded to a detector with several thousands of optical modules. The time offsets between the different optical modules are obtained using LED nanobeacons mounted inside them. A set of data corresponding to 600 h of livetime was analysed. The results show good agreement with Monte Carlo simulations of the expected optical background and the signal from atmospheric muons. An almost background-free sample of muons was selected by filtering the time correlated signals on all the three optical modules. The zenith angle of the selected muons was reconstructed with a precision of about 3$$^circ $$∘.

Abstract

Elastic scattering angular distributions for the weakly bound nucleus $^{7}\mathrm{Li}$ on $^{64}\mathrm{Zn}$ have been measured in a wide angular range at energies around the Coulomb barrier. The present experimental data and our previously measured elastic scattering data for the system $^{6}\mathrm{Li}+^{64}\mathrm{Zn}$ have been analyzed within the continuum-discretized coupled-channels method, where the resonant and nonresonant states of the projectile are taken into account. In this theoretical framework, we have also analyzed our previously measured excitation functions of elastic scattering at backward angles and the corresponding barrier distributions for the same systems. A good agreement between the experimental data and the calculations has been observed. The obtained results, besides confirming the importance of the coupling to the breakup channels in collisions with weakly bound nuclei, show that, in the case of $^{6}\mathrm{Li}$, the inclusion of the resonant states of the projectile produces non-negligible effects.

Abstract

The 8Li elastic scattering on a 4He gas target was studied by means of the Inverse Kinematic Thick Target scattering method (TTIK) in order to investigate cluster configurations in excited states of 12 B . A 8 Li beam, at Ec.m. = 10.2 MeV , was provided by the EXCYT radioactive beam facility at Catania. The beam, while passing through the helium thick target decreases its energy, thus exploring the 8 Li -α center-of-mass energy range 2.7 MeV ≤ECM ≤9.6 MeV . Four Δ E - E silicon detector telescopes were used to detect the recoiling alpha particles. The time interval between the 8 Li passing through a micro-channel plate foil, placed at the entrance of the chamber, and the detection of the α particles by the Δ E detectors was also measured. The time measurement allows to disentangle elastic from reactions events, otherwise impossible from energy measurements. This can be considered as an improvement of the TTIK method. In this paper the used experimental technique and the obtained preliminary results will be presented.

Abstract

A solution of the large discrepancy existing between inclusive and exclusive measurements of the 8Li + 4He → 11B + n reaction cross section at E cm < 3 MeV is evaluated. This problem has profound astrophysical relevance for this reaction is of great interest in big bang and r-process nucleosynthesis. By means of a novel technique, a comprehensive study of all existing 8Li + 4He → 11B + n cross section data is carried out, setting up a consistent picture in which all the inclusive measurements provide the reliable value of the cross section. New unambiguous signatures of the strong branch pattern non-uniformities, near the threshold of higher 11B excited levels, are presented and their possible origin, in terms of the cluster structure of the involved excited states of 11B and 12Bnuclei, is discussed.

Abstract

The 13C + 9Be reactions have been measured using a 13C beam with an incident energy of 90MeV. The 17O excitation energy spectra have been reconstructed from the detected 13C + $ \alpha$ coincidences. A number of the 17O states has been observed and their structure has been discussed in relation to the well-known 16O cluster states.

Abstract

The 8 Li + 4 He → 11 B + n reaction at E cm 2 MeV is a process of relevant astrophysical interest for which a remarkable experimental discrepancy between inclusive and exclusive cross-section measurements exists. In this Letter, a new inclusive neutron measurement at E cm = 1.05 ± 0.16 MeV is given. The radioactive 8 Li beam was delivered by the EXCYT facility. The cross section was determined by a low-background measurement of the time correlation between the 8 Li projectile arrival to the target and the following neutron capture in a threshold-less 4 π thermalization counter. This new data strengthens the reliability of the previous inclusive reaction cross-section data and altogether are consistent with a significant population of 11 B levels at high excitation energy.

Abstract

The results of the analysis of the data collected with the NEMO Phase-2 tower, deployed at 3500 m depth about 80 km off-shore Capo Passero (Italy), are presented. Cherenkov photons detected with the photomultipliers tubes were used to reconstruct the tracks of atmospheric muons. Their zenith-angle distribution was measured and the results compared with Monte Carlo simulations. An evaluation of the systematic effects due to uncertainties on environmental and detector parameters is also included. The associated depth intensity relation was evaluated and compared with previous measurements and theoretical predictions. Abstract

The paper describes a few practical methods for the analysis of data obtained by standard thin-thick silicon detector telescopes used in nuclear reaction measurements. The addressed issues are: 1) improvement in double-sided silicon strip detector (DSSSD) calibration based on the fact that each event is registered twice, both in horizontal and vertical strips, 2) improvements in particle identification and 3) simplified mapping of the non-uniformity of the thin detector, without a dedicated measurement of the thickness. The proposed procedures are applied on experimental data obtained for 30 MeV 7Li beam induced reactions on LiF and C targets, studied with a detection setup consisting of four telescopes placed at different angles and distances. The proposed methods aim at quicker and more reliable calibration and particle identification.

Abstract

The experimental elastic scattering angular distributions for the weakly bound nuclei 6,7Li and for the halo nucleus 6He on the same 64Zn target at several energies around the Coulomb barrier were measured at the Laboratori Nazionali del Sud (LNS, Italy) and at the Cyclotron Research Center, Louvain La Neuve (Belgium), respectively. The measured elastic scattering angular distributions of these three systems at the same center of mass energy have been compared. The experimental data of the 6,7Li+ 64Zn systems have been analyzed within the CDCC method, while the 6He+64Zn data have been compared with both both CDCC and CRC calculations.

Abstract

Spectra of coincident charged particles from the reactions induced by a 18 MeV 6He beam incident on the 6Li and 7Li targets were measured. A strong contribution to the 6He-d spectrum may be interpreted as the 6He quasi-free scattering off the deuteron in the 6Li nucleus. This would then be the first observation of the quasi-free scattering of fragile radioactive nuclei on clusters in target nuclei.

Abstract

The in flight production of a secondary 8Li radioactive beam using the existing beam transport lines at the SMP13 Tandem accelerator of the Laboratori Nazionali del Sud in Catania is studied. The method consists in the momentum filtering by a switching magnet of the 8Li ions emitted backward in the centre of mass of the 2H(7Li,p)8Li reaction, followed by a time-of-flight tagging of the deflected ions. Details of the experimental procedures and preliminary results of the 8Li(4He,n)11B reaction study relevant for pregalactic nucleosynthesis are presented and discussed.

Abstract

The astrophysically relevant 3 He ( d , p ) 4 He reaction was indirectly studied by means of the Trojan Horse Method applied to the 6 Li ( 3 He , pα ) 4 He three body process performed at 5 and 6 MeV. The bare astrophysical S(E)-factor extracted in Modified Plane Wave Born Approximation was compared with the free behaviour and an independent estimate of the screening potential was obtained, confirming the discrepancy with the adiabatic limit.

Abstract

The 6He+6, 7Li and 6He+12C reactions have been measured using a 18.0 MeV 6He beam of the radioactive beam facility in Louvain-la-Neuve. Charged particles were detected in three large-area silicon strip detector arreys (320 strip detectors in total) 300 microm thick. Angular distributions have been measured for the elastic scattering and a number of two-body reactions. Pick-up of deuterons, tritons and alpha-particles from 6Li and 7Li targets were clearly seen. In triple coincident events, the 6He+6Li->6He+alpha+d, 6He+6Li->2alpha+t+n, 6He+7Li->6He+alpha+t, and 6He+12C->10Be*+2alpha reactions were clearly extracted and, assuming sequential decay mechanism, cluster states of 6Li, 7Li, 9Be, 10Be and 14C were recognized and discussed.

Abstract

The cross-section of 8 Li( $\alpha $ ,n)11 B has been measured at $E_{\rm cm}$ = 1.25 MeV to be $\sigma (E) = 500$ mb using novel techniques, i.e. a 8 Li radioactive ion beam produced at the tandem in Catania in combination with a 4 He gas cell and a $4\pi $ neutron detector. The value is in fair agreement with previous work strengthening the model of inhomogeneous Big Bang nucleosynthesis.

Abstract

The 6 He+ 12 C elastic and inelastic scattering and the 6 He+ 12 C→ α + 14 C reaction have been measured using a 18.0 MeV 6 He beam. Experimental results for the elastic scattering are in fair agreement with optical model predictions, using the potentials found in the analysis of 6 Li scattering on 12 C at similar energies. In triple coincidences, the 6 He+ 12 C→ 10 Be+2 α reactions were clearly seen, with the 10 Be nucleus left in ground and several excited states. The dominant mechanism of this reaction is sequential decay through cluster states of 14 C.

Abstract

Radioactive beams of $^{14}\mathrm{O}$ and $^{15}\mathrm{O}$ were used to populate the resonant states ${1/2}^{+}$, ${5/2}^{+}$ and ${0}^{\ensuremath{-}},{1}^{\ensuremath{-}},{2}^{\ensuremath{-}}$ in the unbound $^{15}\mathrm{F}$ and $^{16}\mathrm{F}$ nuclei, respectively, by means of proton elastic scattering reactions in inverse kinematics. Based on their large proton spectroscopic factor values, the resonant states in $^{16}\mathrm{F}$ can be viewed as a core of $^{14}\mathrm{O}$ plus a proton in the $2{s}_{1/2}$ or $1{d}_{5/2}$ shell and a neutron in $1{p}_{1/2}$. Experimental energies were used to derive the strength of the $2{s}_{1/2}$-$1{p}_{1/2}$ and $1{d}_{5/2}$-$1{p}_{1/2}$ proton-neutron interactions. It is found that the former changes by 40% compared with the mirror nucleus $^{16}\mathrm{N}$, and the latter changes by 10%. This apparent symmetry breaking of the nuclear force between mirror nuclei finds explanation in the role of the large coupling to the continuum for the states built on an $\ensuremath{\ell}=0$ proton configuration.

Abstract

In the framework of the Phase 2 of the NEMO neutrino telescope project, a tower with 32 optical modules is being operated since march 2013. A new scalable Trigger and Data Acquisition System (TriDAS) has been developed and extensively tested with the data from this tower. Adopting the all-data-to-shore concept, the NEMO TriDAS is optimized to deal with a continuous data-stream from off-shore to on-shore with a large bandwidth. The TriDAS consists of four computing layers: (i) data aggregation of isochronal hits from all optical modules; (ii) data filtering by means of concurrent trigger algorithms; (iii) composition of the filtered events into post-trigger files; (iv) persistent data storage. The TriDAS implementation is reported together with a review of dedicated on-line monitoring tools.

The suppression of the Coulomb-nuclear interference, observed in the 11Be scattering case with respect to the 10Be, has been interpreted as due to a long range absorption owing to the coupling with the break-up (Coulomb and nuclear) channels. Abstract

In March 2013, the Nemo Phase-2 tower has been successfully installed at 100 km off-shore Capo Passero (Italy) and 3500 m depth. This 8-floor tower hosts 32 10-inch PMT's. Results from optical background measurements are presented. In particular, the analyzed rates show stable and low baseline values, compatible with the contribution of 40K light emission, with a small percentage of light bursts due to bioluminescence. All these features are a confirmation of the stability and good optical nature of the site.

Abstract

We measured elastic scattering angular distributions and cross sections for heavy residue production for the systems 6,7 Li+ 64 Zn at different energies around the Coulomb barrier. The elastic scattering angular distributions have been reproduced by optical model fits using a renormalized double folding potential for the real and imaginary parts. Absence of usual threshold anomaly in the optical potential was found. The excitation functions for heavy residue production were measured using an activation technique. Comparison with different calculations suggest that complete fusion is the dominant reaction mechanism above the barrier whereas, below the Coulomb barrier, incomplete fusion and transfer dominate.

Abstract

The astrophysically important 7Li(p, α)α reaction has been studied via the Trojan horse method in the energy range E = 10-400 keV. A new theoretical description, based on the distorted-wave Born approximation approach, allows one to extract information on the bare astrophysical S-factor, Sb(E), with Sb(0) = 55 ± 3 keV barns. The results are compared with direct experimental data leading to a model-independent value of the electron screening potential energy, Ue = 330 ± 40 eV, much higher than the adiabatic limit Uad = 175 eV.

Abstract

Excitation functions for the production of heavy residues have been measured for the collisions ${}^{6,7}\mathrm{Li}+{}^{64}\mathrm{Zn}$ at energies around and below the Coulomb barrier. The cross sections for heavy residue production have been measured using an activation technique, detecting off-line the characteristic atomic x-rays emitted in the electron capture decay of the reaction products. The experimental relative yields of the residues have been compared with statistical model calculations performed by using the code cascade. Such a comparison suggests that heavy residue production is dominated by complete fusion at above-barrier energies, whereas different processes like incomplete fusion and/or transfer become dominant in the sub-barrier energy region. The heavy residue excitation function ratio between the ${}^{6}$Li- and ${}^{7}$Li-induced collisions shows an increasing trend as the energy decreases below the barrier.
