The 24Mg(p,α)21 Na transfer reaction has been previously studied for a spectroscopic study of 21Na [Cha et al., Phys. Rev. C 96, 025810 (2017)]. In this follow-up analysis, the proton decays of the excited states of the radionuclide 21Na, which were measured simultaneously, are reported. By investigating the coincidence between the reaction α-particles and decay protons, we were able to identify three groups of events that are associated with the energy levels in 20Ne. The 20Ne excitation energy plot was obtained as a result. The four lowest known energy levels in 20Ne (the ground state and excited states at Ex = 1.633, 4.247 and 4.966 MeV) were clearly observed.

The structure of nuclei around the neutron-rich nucleus 132Sn is of particular interest due to the vicinity of the Z = 50 and N = 82 shell closures and the r-process nucleosynthetic path. Four states in 131Sn with a strong single-particle-like component have previously been studied via the (d,p) reaction, with limited excitation energy resolution. The 130Sn(9Be,8Be)131Sn and 130Sn(13C,12C)131Sn single-neutron transfer reactions were performed in inverse kinematics at the Holifield Radioactive Ion Beam Facility using particle-gamma coincidence spectroscopy. The uncertainties in the energies of the single-particle-like states have been reduced by more than an order of magnitude using the energies of gamma rays. The previous tentative Jpi values have been confirmed. Decays from high-spin states in 131Sn have been observed following transfer on the isomeric component of the 130Sn beam. The improved energies and confirmed spin-parities of the p-wave states important to the r-process lead to direct-semidirect cross-sections for neutron capture on the ground state of 130Sn at 30 keV that are in agreement with previous analyses. A similar assessment of the impact of neutron-transfer on the isomer would require significant nuclear structure and reaction theory input. The $\ensuremath{\beta}$ decay of $^{125m,125}\mathrm{Ag}$ into levels in $^{125}\mathrm{Cd}$ was investigated at the Holifield Radioactive Ion Beam Facility (HRIBF). Uranium-238 targets were bombarded with 50-MeV protons with an intensity of $15\phantom{\rule{4pt}{0ex}}\ensuremath{\mu}$A, and the induced fission products were mass separated and deposited on a moving tape in the center of the VANDLE array consisting of $\ensuremath{\gamma}$ detectors and plastic scintillators. A partial decay scheme has been assigned for both $\ensuremath{\beta}$ decay of the (9/${2}^{+}$) ground state of $^{125}\mathrm{Ag}$ and its low-lying (1/${2}^{\ensuremath{-}}$) isomer, with the energy of the low-lying (11/${2}^{\ensuremath{-}}$) isomeric state in $^{125}\mathrm{Cd}$ assigned as 188.5 keV. In addition, $\ensuremath{\beta}$-delayed neutron emission probabilities were also determined to be 1.2(2)% for the (9/${2}^{+}$) $^{125}\mathrm{Ag}$ ground state and 4.6(10)% for the (1/${2}^{\ensuremath{-}}$) isomer, which are substantially lower than the previously reported value.

Decay protons from excited states in $^{21}\mathrm{Na}$ populated through a previously reported $^{24}\mathrm{Mg}(p,\ensuremath{\alpha})^{21}\mathrm{Na}$ transfer reaction [Cha et al., Phys. Rev. C 96, 025810 (2017)] were analyzed to extract the proton branching ratios of the energy levels. By utilizing 31-MeV proton beams from the Holifield Radioactive Ion Beam Facility of Oak Ridge National Laboratory and isotopically enriched $^{24}\mathrm{Mg}$ solid targets, the decay protons were detected in coincidence with $\ensuremath{\alpha}$ particles from the $(p,\ensuremath{\alpha})$ reaction using a silicon strip detector array. Proton decay branching ratios of several $^{21}\mathrm{Na}$ levels were deduced for the $p0$ and $p1$ decay channels to the ground and first excited states in $^{20}\mathrm{Ne}$, respectively.

The $$^{22}\hbox {Na}(p,\gamma )^{23}\hbox {Mg}$$ reaction is responsible for destruction of the long-lived radionuclide $$^{22}\hbox {Na}$$ produced during nova explosions. Since the reaction proceeds through resonances from levels in $$^{23}\hbox {Mg}$$ above the proton threshold at 7.581 MeV, the properties of these levels such as excitation energies, spins, and parities are crucial ingredients to determine the $$^{22}\hbox {Na}(p,\gamma )^{23}\hbox {Mg}$$ reaction rate. Despite recent studies of these levels, their spins are not well constrained in many cases. We have measured the $$^{24}\mathrm{Mg}(p,d)^{23}\hbox {Mg}$$ transfer reaction to determine spectroscopic properties of these levels at the Holifield Radioactive Ion Beam Facility at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. The spin of the $$E_{x}$$ = 7.788 MeV level in $$^{23}\hbox {Mg}$$ is constrained to be $$J^{\pi }$$ = (3/2$$^+$$, 5/2$$^+$$) through the present work. The astrophysical $$^{22}\hbox {Na}(p,\gamma )^{23}\hbox {Mg}$$ reaction rate at nova temperatures is updated accordingly. Nova nucleosynthesis model calculations using the newly updated $$^{22}\hbox {Na}(p,\gamma )^{23}\hbox {Mg}$$ reaction rate shows that the final weighted abundance of the radionuclide $$^{22}\hbox {Na}$$ is increased by 42% compared to that obtained by using the previous $$^{22}\hbox {Na}(p,\gamma )^{23}\hbox {Mg}$$ reaction rate of Sallaska et al. for a 1.35 $$M_{\odot }$$ ONeMg white dwarf.

In atomic nuclei, the spin-orbit interaction originates from the coupling of the orbital motion of a nucleon with its intrinsic spin. Recent experimental and theoretical works have suggested a weakening of the spin-orbit interaction in neutron-rich nuclei far from stability. To study this phenomenon, we have investigated the spin-orbit energy splittings of single-hole and single-particle valence neutron orbits of 132Sn. The spectroscopic strength of single-hole states in 131Sn was determined from the measured differential cross sections of the tritons from the neutron-removing 132Sn(d, t)131Sn reaction, which was studied in inverse kinematics at the Holifield Radioactive Ion Beam Facility at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. The spectroscopic factors of the lowest 3/2+, 1/2+ and 5/2+ states were found to be consistent with their maximal values of (2j+1), confirming the robust N=82 shell closure at 132Sn. We compared the spin-orbit splitting of neutron single-hole states in 131Sn to those of single-particle states in 133Sn determined in a recent measurement of the 132Sn(d, p)133Sn reaction. We found a significant reduction of the energy splitting of the weakly bound 3p orbits compared to the well-bound 2d orbits, and that all the observed energy splittings can be reproduced remarkably well by calculations using a one-body spin-orbit interaction and a Woods–Saxon potential of standard radius and diffuseness. The observed reduction of spin-orbit splitting can be explained by the extended radial wavefunctions of the weakly bound orbits, without invoking a weakening of the spin-orbit strength. Direct measurements of ( α , p ) reactions of astrophysical interest with radioactive beams presents serious challenges because of the difficult nature of helium targets and the typical low intensities of the beams. To address this, a new technique has been developed for measurements of low-energy ( α , p ) reactions with heavy ion beams using an extended 4 He gas target and a newly developed gas recirculating system. The system was used to measure the 4 He(19F, 1 H)22Ne reaction as a demonstration. Excitation functions of the 19F( α , p )22Ne and 19F( α , p ′ )22Ne ∗ reactions were successfully measured to show the viability of this technique. Details of the approach and future plans are given.

Results are presented from the first neutron-transfer measurement on $^{80}\mathrm{Ge}$ using an exotic beam from the Holifield Radioactive Ion Beam Facility at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. Newly measured spins and spectroscopic factors of low-lying states of $^{81}\mathrm{Ge}$ are determined, and the neutron capture cross section on $^{80}\mathrm{Ge}$ was calculated in a direct-semidirect model to provide a more realistic ($n,\ensuremath{\gamma}$) reaction rate for $r$-process simulations. Furthermore, a region of shape coexistence around $N\ensuremath{\approx}50$ is confirmed and implications for the magic nature of $^{78}\mathrm{Ni}$ are discussed.

Half of the elements heavier than iron are believed to be produced through the rapid neutron-capture process ($r$ process). The astrophysical environment(s) where the $r$ process occurs remains an open question, even after recent observations of neutron-star mergers and the associated kilonova. Features in the abundance pattern of $r$-process ashes may provide critical insight for distinguishing contributions from different possible sites, including neutron-star mergers and core-collapse supernovae. In particular, the largely unknown neutron-capture reaction rates on neutron-rich unstable nuclei near $^{132}\mathrm{Sn}$ could have a significant impact on the final $r$-process abundances. To better determine these neutron-capture rates, the $(d,p)$ reaction has been measured in inverse kinematics using radioactive ion beams of $^{126}\mathrm{Sn}$ and $^{128}\mathrm{Sn}$ and a stable beam of $^{124}\mathrm{Sn}$ interacting with a ${({\mathrm{CD}}_{2})}_{n}$ target. An array of position-sensitive silicon strip detectors, including the Super Oak Ridge Rutgers University Barrel Array, was used to detect light reaction products. In addition to the present measurements, previous measurements of $^{130,132}\mathrm{Sn}(d,p)$ were reanalyzed using state-of-the-art reaction theory to extract a consistent set of spectroscopic factors for $(d,p)$ reactions on even tin nuclei between the heaviest stable isotope $^{124}\mathrm{Sn}$ and doubly magic $^{132}\mathrm{Sn}$. The spectroscopic information was used to calculate direct-semidirect $(n,\ensuremath{\gamma})$ cross sections, which will serve as important input for $r$-process abundance calculations.

The Versatile Array of Neutron Detectors at Low Energy (VANDLE) is a new, highly efficient plastic-scintillator array constructed for decay and transfer reaction experimental setups that require neutron detection. The versatile and modular design allows for customizable experimental setups including beta-delayed neutron spectroscopy and (d,n) transfer reactions in normal and inverse kinematics. The neutron energy and prompt-photon discrimination is determined through the time of flight technique. Fully digital data acquisition electronics and integrated triggering logic enables some VANDLE modules to achieve an intrinsic efficiency over 70% for 300-keV neutrons, measured through two different methods. A custom Geant4 simulation models aspects of the detector array and the experimental setups to determine efficiency and detector response. A low detection threshold, due to the trigger logic and digitizing data acquisition, allowed us to measure the light-yield response curve from elastically scattered carbon nuclei inside the scintillating plastic from incident neutrons with kinetic energies below 2 MeV.

The $^{24}\mathrm{Mg}(p,\ensuremath{\alpha})^{21}\mathrm{Na}$ reaction was measured at the Holifield Radioactive Ion Beam Facility of the Oak Ridge National Laboratory to study the spectroscopy of the radionuclide $^{21}\mathrm{Na}$. A 31-MeV proton beam from the 25 MV tandem accelerator bombarded isotopically enriched $^{24}\mathrm{Mg}$ targets. Recoiling $^{4}\mathrm{He}$ particles were identified by an annular silicon strip detector array. Two energy levels at ${E}_{x}=6.594$ and 7.132 MeV were observed for the first time. By comparing the experimentally obtained angular distributions and distorted wave Born approximation calculations, the spins and parities of $^{21}\mathrm{Na}$ energy levels were constrained. The astrophysically-important $^{17}\mathrm{F}(\ensuremath{\alpha},p)^{20}\mathrm{Ne}$ reaction rate was also calculated for the first time using resonance parameters for 12 energy levels.

The neutron-deficient nucleus Sn 107 has been studied by using the one-neutron knockout reaction. By measuring the decay γ rays and momentum distributions of reaction residues, the spins of the ground, 5/2 + , and first-excited, 7/2 + , states of Sn 107 have been assigned by comparisons to eikonal-model reaction calculations. Limits on the inclusive and exclusive cross sections have been measured and transitions due to neutron removals from below the N=50 closed shell have been observed. New excited states up to 5.5 MeV in Sn 107 have been identified.

The β-delayed neutron emission of ^{83,84}Ga isotopes was studied using the neutron time-of-flight technique. The measured neutron energy spectra showed emission from states at excitation energies high above the neutron separation energy and previously not observed in the β decay of midmass nuclei. The large decay strength deduced from the observed intense neutron emission is a signature of Gamow-Teller transformation. This observation was interpreted as evidence for allowed β decay to ^{78}Ni core-excited states in ^{83,84}Ge favored by shell effects. We developed shell model calculations in the proton fpg_{9/2} and neutron extended fpg_{9/2}+d_{5/2} valence space using realistic interactions that were used to understand measured β-decay lifetimes. We conclude that enhanced, concentrated β-decay strength for neutron-unbound states may be common for very neutron-rich nuclei. This leads to intense β-delayed high-energy neutron and strong multineutron emission probabilities that in turn affect astrophysical nucleosynthesis models.

A complete set of electromagnetic moments, B(E2;0+1 2+1), Q(2+1), and g(2+1), have been measured from Coulomb excitation of semi-magic 112,114,116,118,120,122,124Sn (Z = 50) on natural carbon and titanium targets. The magnitude of the B(E2) values, measured to a precision of ~4%, disagree with a recent lifetime study [Phys. Lett. B 695, 110 (2011)] that employed the Doppler- shift attenuation method. The B(E2) values show an overall enhancement compared with recent theoretical calculations and a clear asymmetry about midshell, contrary to naive expectations. A new static electric quadrupole moment, Q(2+1), has been measured for 114Sn. The static quadrupole moments are generally consistent with zero but reveal an enhancement near midshell; this had not been previously observed. The magnetic dipole moments are consistent with previous measurements and show a near monotonic decrease in value with neutron number. The current theory calculations fail to reproduce the electromagnetic moments of the tin isotopes. The role of 2p-2h and 4p-4h intruders, which are lowest in energy at mid shell and outside of current model spaces, needs to be investigated in the future.

The in-flight heavy-ion fragmentation technique has been used to produce a secondary beam of tritons (3H) at intermediate energies ( E t > 100 MeV / nucleon ) from primary 16,18O beams of 150 and 120 MeV/nucleon, respectively. The best results are obtained with a 16O beam of 150 MeV/nucleon, producing a 115 MeV/nucleon triton beam. The triton beam will be used in (t,3He) charge-exchange experiments at the S800 spectrometer at the NSCL. At the target of the S800, a triton rate of 5 × 10 6 particles per second is achieved, for a primary 16O beam of 100 pnA. The (t,3He) reaction using this beam was tested with a 24Mg target. An excitation-energy resolution of 190 ± 15 keV is achieved.

A new accelerator facility RI Beam Factory (RIBF) will be operated in 2006 at RIKEN. The capability of the RIBF enables us to study the neutron-rich nuclei near the drip-line. New beta-ray detection system is under the development for systematic study of half-lives of nuclei related to r-process.

The tin chain of isotopes provides a unique region in which to investigate the evolution of single-particle structure, spreading from N = 50 at 100Sn, through 10 stable isotopes and the N = 82 shell closure at 132Sn out into the r-process path. Direct reactions performed on radioactive ion beams are sensitive spectroscopic tools for studying exotic nuclei. Here we present one experiment knocking out neutrons from tin isotopes that are already neutron deficient and two reactions that add a neutron to neutron-rich 130Sn. Both techniques rely on selective particle identification and the measurement of γ rays in coincidence with charged ions. We present the goals of the two experiments and the particle identification for the channels of interest. The final results will be presented in future publications.

The $^{24}$Mg($p$, $\alpha$)$^{21}$Na reaction was measured at the Holifield Radioactive Ion Beam Facility at Oak Ridge National Laboratory in order to better constrain spins and parities of energy levels in $^{21}$Na for the astrophysically important $^{17}$F($\alpha, p$)$^{20}$Ne reaction rate calculation. 31 MeV proton beams from the 25-MV tandem accelerator and enriched $^{24}$Mg solid targets were used. Recoiling $^{4}$He particles from the $^{24}$Mg($p$, $\alpha$)$^{21}$Na reaction were detected by a highly segmented silicon detector array which measured the yields of $^{4}$He particles over a range of angles simultaneously. A new level at 6661 $\pm$ 5 keV was observed in the present work. The extracted angular distributions for the first four levels of $^{21}$Na and Distorted Wave Born Approximation (DWBA) calculations were compared to verify and extract angular momentum transfer., Comment: 11 pages, 6 figures, proceedings of the 18th International Conference on Accelerators and Beam Utilization (ICABU2014)

Total cross section measurements for the 102 Pd(p, γ ) 103 Ag and 116 Sn(p, γ ) 117 Sb reactions have been performed in the proton energy range 2.6 to 4.25 MeV, and for the 112 Sn( α , γ ) 116 Te reaction over the alpha beam energy range 7.0 to 10.5 MeV. An activation technique was used in which gamma rays from decays of the reaction products were detected off-line by two hyper-pure germanium detectors in a low background environment. Where possible, reaction rates are derived and the results compared to those of calculations generated by the NON-SMOKER and the MOST statistical model codes so as to judge their applicability for describing the cross sections needed for network calculations of nucleosynthesis in explosive astrophysical environments via the γ - and rp-processes.

High-precision reduced electric-quadrupole transition probabilities $B(E2;{0}_{1}^{+}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{2}_{1}^{+})$ have been measured from single-step Coulomb excitation of semi-magic $^{58,60,62,64}\mathrm{Ni}$ ($Z=28$) beams at 1.8 MeV per nucleon on a natural carbon target. The energy loss of the nickel beams through the carbon target were directly measured with a zero-degree Bragg detector and the absolute $B(E2)$ values were normalized by Rutherford scattering. The $B(E2)$ values disagree with recent lifetime studies that employed the Doppler-shift attenuation method. The present high-precision $B(E2)$ values reveal an asymmetry about $^{62}\mathrm{Ni}$, midshell between $N=28$ and 40, with larger values towards $^{56}\mathrm{Ni}$ ($Z=N=28$). The experimental $B(E2)$ values are compared with shell-model calculations in the full $pf$ model space and the results indicate a soft $^{56}\mathrm{Ni}$ core.

$\ensuremath{\gamma}$-ray transitions in ${}^{134}\text{Te}$, ${}^{135}\text{Te}$, and ${}^{136}\text{Te}$ were measured from ${}^{9}\text{Be}$-induced reactions with a radioactive ${}^{132}\text{Sn}$ beam at a sub-Coulomb barrier energy of 3 MeV per nucleon using particle-$\ensuremath{\gamma}$ coincidence spectroscopy. The transitions were selected by gating on alpha-like particles in a CsI detector following a combination of $({}^{9}\text{Be},\ensuremath{\alpha}1n)$, $({}^{9}\text{Be},\ensuremath{\alpha}2n)$, and $({}^{9}\text{Be},\ensuremath{\alpha}3n)$ incomplete fusion-evaporation reactions. Distorted-wave Born approximation calculations suggest little to no contribution from the $({}^{9}\text{Be},{}^{7}\text{He})$, $({}^{9}\text{Be},{}^{6}\text{He})$, and $({}^{9}\text{Be},{}^{5}\text{He})$ direct reactions.$\ensuremath{\gamma}$-ray transitions from previously known ${2}^{+}\ensuremath{\bigotimes}\ensuremath{\nu}\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}2{f}_{7/2}$ and ${4}^{+}\ensuremath{\bigotimes}\ensuremath{\nu}\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}2{f}_{7/2}$ multiplet members in ${}^{135}\text{Te}$ are observed. A new $\ensuremath{\gamma}$ ray is observed, assigned to the third-excited state in ${}^{135}\text{Te}$, and new ${2}^{+}\ensuremath{\bigotimes}\ensuremath{\nu}\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}2{f}_{7/2}$ multiplet members are suggested. In addition, spin assignments are made by using recent one-neutron transfer data. The updated experimental data for ${}^{135}\text{Te}$ are compared to shell-model calculations for a relatively complete set of states up to the yrast ${15/2}^{\ensuremath{-}},{4}^{+}\ensuremath{\bigotimes}\ensuremath{\nu}\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}2{f}_{7/2}$ multiplet member at 1505 keV.

Single-neutron states in $^{133}\mathrm{Sn}$ and $^{209}\mathrm{Pb}$, which are analogous to single-electron states outside of closed atomic shells in alkali metals, were populated by the ($^{9}\mathrm{Be}$, $^{8}\mathrm{Be}$) one-neutron transfer reaction in inverse kinematics using particle-$\ensuremath{\gamma}$ coincidence spectroscopy. In addition, the ${s}_{1/2}$ single-neutron hole-state candidate in $^{131}\mathrm{Sn}$ was populated by ($^{9}\mathrm{Be}$, $^{10}\mathrm{Be}$). Doubly closed-shell $^{132}\mathrm{Sn}$ (radioactive) and $^{208}\mathrm{Pb}$ (stable) beams were used at sub-Coulomb barrier energies of 3 MeV per nucleon. Level energies, $\ensuremath{\gamma}$-ray transitions, absolute cross sections, spectroscopic factors, asymptotic normalization coefficients, and excited-state lifetimes are reported and compared with shell-model expectations. The results include a new transition and precise level energy for the $3{p}_{1/2}$ candidate in $^{133}\mathrm{Sn}$, new absolute cross sections for the $1{h}_{9/2}$ candidate in $^{133}\mathrm{Sn}$ and $3{s}_{1/2}$ candidate in $^{131}\mathrm{Sn}$, and new lifetimes for excited states in $^{133}\mathrm{Sn}$ and $^{209}\mathrm{Pb}$. This is the first report on excited-state lifetimes of $^{133}\mathrm{Sn}$, which allow for a unique test of the nuclear shell model and $^{132}\mathrm{Sn}$ double-shell closure.

Single-neutron states in (133)Sn and (209)Pb, which are analogous to single-electron states outside of closed atomic shells in alkali metals, were populated by the ((9)Be, (8)Be) one-neutron transfer reaction in inverse kinematics using particle-γ coincidence spectroscopy. In addition, the s(1/2) single-neutron hole-state candidate in (131)Sn was populated by ((9)Be, (10)Be). Doubly closed-shell (132)Sn (radioactive) and (208)Pb (stable) beams were used at sub-Coulomb barrier energies of 3 MeV per nucleon. Level energies, γ-ray transitions, absolute cross sections, spectroscopic factors, asymptotic normalization coefficients, and excited-state lifetimes are reported and compared with shell-model expectations. The results include a new transition and precise level energy for the 3p(1/2) candidate in (133)Sn, new absolute cross sections for the 1h(9/2) candidate in (133)Sn and 3s(1/2) candidate in (131)Sn, and new lifetimes for excited states in (133)Sn and (209)Pb. This is the first report on excited-state lifetimes of (133)Sn, which allow for a unique test of the nuclear shell model and (132)Sn double-shell closure.

The 9Be(28Mg,27Na) one-proton removal reaction with a large proton separation energy of Sp(28Mg)=16.79 MeV is studied at intermediate beam energy. Coincidences of the bound 27Na residues with protons and other light charged particles are measured. These data are analyzed to determine the percentage contributions to the proton removal cross section from the elastic and inelastic nucleon removal mechanisms. These deduced contributions are compared with the eikonal reaction model predictions and with the previously measured data for reactions involving the re- moval of more weakly-bound protons from lighter nuclei. The role of transitions of the proton between different bound single-particle configurations upon the elastic breakup cross section is also quantified in this well-bound case. The measured and calculated elastic breakup fractions are found to be in good agreement., Comment: Phys. Rev. C 2014 (accepted)

The $g$ factor and $B(E2)$ of the first excited ${2}^{+}$ state have been measured following Coulomb excitation of the neutron-rich semimagic nuclide ${}^{134}$Te (two protons outside ${}^{132}$Sn) produced as a radioactive beam. The precision achieved matches related $g$-factor measurements on stable beams and distinguishes between alternative models. The $B(E2)$ measurement exposes quadrupole strength in the ${2}_{1}^{+}$ state beyond that predicted by current large-basis shell-model calculations. This additional quadrupole strength can be attributed to coupling between the two valence protons and excitations of the ${}^{132}$Sn core. However, the wave functions of the low-excitation positive-parity states in ${}^{134}$Te up to ${6}_{1}^{+}$ remain dominated by the $\ensuremath{\pi}{({g}_{7/2})}^{2}$ configuration.

The study of nuclei far from stability elucidates the evolution of nuclear shell structure, and also affects estimates of heavy element nucleosynthesis in supernova explosions. Measurement of transfer reactions in inverse kinematics with radioactive ion beams is a powerful technique for these types of studies. Rare isotope beams often have relatively low intensities, and this places difficult requirements on the detection systems for reaction products. The detectors must provide large solid angle coverage in the laboratory along with good position and energy resolution. The Super ORRUBA detector array has been developed for such measurements and is comprised of 18 double-sided, nonresistive silicon strip detectors. This configuration features low thresholds and improved resolution over detectors employing charge division. As a first implementation of this system, the 80Ge(d,p)81Ge neutron transfer reaction in inverse kinematics was measured at HRIBF at ORNL, to determine the properties of levels in 81Ge.

The (d, p) reaction was measured with the radioactive ion beams of 126Sn and 128Sn in inverse kinematics at the Holifield Radioactive Ion Beam Facility at Oak Ridge National Laboratory, utilizing the Super ORRUBA silicon detector array. Angular distributions of reaction protons were measured for several states in 127Sn and 129Sn to determine angular momentum transfers and deduce spectroscopic factors. Such information is critical for calculating direct (n,γ) cross sections for the r-process as well as for constraining shell model parameters in the A≈130 region. Combined with previous experiments on 130Sn and 132Sn, these results will provide a complete set of (d, p) reaction data on even tin isotopes between stable 124Sn and doubly-magic 132Sn.

The astrophysical rapid neutron-capture process (r-process) is believed to have produced approximately half of the nuclear species more massive than Fe. Unfortunately, almost nothing is known about the structure of the majority of the extremely neutron-rich nuclei involved in the reaction flow. At exotic beam facilities such as the Holifield Radioactive Ion Beam Facility (HRIBF), measurements with accelerated beams of fission fragments have provided some of the first spectroscopic information on many r-process nuclei. The new SuperORRUBA (Oak Ridge Rutgers University Barrel Array) detector has been constructed at the HRIBF to study such nuclei, and first results are presented.

The interaction of an E/A=70 - MeV 7Be beam with a Be target was used to populate levels in 6Be following neutron knockout reactions. The three-body decay of the ground and first excited states into the alpha+p+p exit channel were detected in the High Resolution Array. Precise three-body correlations extracted from the experimental data allowed us to obtain insight into the mechanism of the three-body democratic decay. The correlation data are in a good agreement with a three-cluster-model calculation and thus validate this theoretical approach over a broad energy range., 5 pages, 7 figures; Corrected typos

We present a novel technique for studying the quenching of shell gaps in exotic isotopes. The method is based on extracting Gamow-Teller ($\ensuremath{\Delta}L=0$, $\ensuremath{\Delta}S=1$) transition strengths [$B(\mathrm{GT})$] to low-lying states from charge-exchange reactions at intermediate beam energies. These Gamow-Teller strengths are very sensitive to configuration mixing between cross-shell orbitals, and this technique thus provides an important complement to other tools currently used to study cross-shell mixing. This work focuses on the $N=8$ shell gap. We populated the ground and 2.24 MeV ${0}^{+}$ states in $^{12}\mathrm{Be}$ using the $^{12}\mathrm{B}({1}^{+})$ ($^{7}\mathrm{Li}$, $^{7}\mathrm{Be}$) reaction at $80\text{ }\text{ }\mathrm{MeV}/u$ in inverse kinematics. Using the ground-state $B(\mathrm{GT})$ value from $\ensuremath{\beta}$-decay measurements ($0.184\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.007$) as a calibration, the $B(\mathrm{GT})$ for the transition to the second ${0}^{+}$ state was determined to be $0.214\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.051$. Comparing the extracted Gamow-Teller strengths with shell-model calculations, it was determined that the wave functions of the first and second ${0}^{+}$ states in $^{12}\mathrm{Be}$ are composed of $25\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}5%$ and $60\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}5%$ $(0s{)}^{4}(0p{)}^{8}$ configurations, respectively.

We report final-state-exclusive measurements of the light charged fragments in coincidence with 26Ne residual nuclei following the direct two-proton removal from a neutron-rich 28Mg secondary beam. A Dalitz-plot analysis and comparisons with simulations show that a majority of the triple- coincidence events with two protons display phase-space correlations consistent with the (two-body) kinematics of a spatially-correlated pair-removal mechanism. The fraction of such correlated events, 56(12) %, is consistent with the fraction of the calculated cross section, 64 %, arising from spin S = 0 two-proton configurations in the entrance-channel (shell-model) 28Mg ground state wave function. This result promises access to an additional and more specific probe of the spin and spatial correlations of valence nucleon pairs in exotic nuclei produced as fast secondary beams., Comment: accepted for publication in Physical Review Letters

Deviations from the isobaric multiplet mass equation are presented and discussed for the $A=7$, $T=3/2$ quartet and the $A=8$, $T=2$ quintet.

Big Bang nucleosynthesis calculations, constrained by the Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe results, produce {sup 7}Li abundances almost a factor of four larger than those extrapolated from observations. Since primordial {sup 7}Li is believed to be mostly produced by the beta decay of {sup 7}Be, one proposed solution to this discrepancy is a resonant enhancement of the {sup 7}Be(d,p)2{alpha} reaction rate through the 5/2{sup +} 16.7-MeV state in {sup 9}B. The {sup 2}H({sup 7}Be,d){sup 7}Be reaction was used to search for such a resonance; none was observed. An upper limit on the width of the proposed resonance was deduced.

The interactions of an E/A=70-MeV {sup 9}C beam with a Be target was used to populate levels in Be, B, and C isotopes, which undergo decay into many-particle exit channels. The decay products were detected in the HiRA array and the level energies were identified from their invariant mass. Correlations between the decay products were examined to deduce the nature of the decays, specifically to what extent all the fragments were created in one prompt step or whether the disintegration proceeded in a sequential fashion through long-lived intermediate states. In the latter case, information on the spin of the level was also obtained. Of particular interest is the five-body decay of the {sup 8}C ground state, which was found to disintegrate in two steps of two-proton decay passing through the {sup 6}Be{sub g.s.} intermediate state. The isobaric analog of {sup 8}C{sub g.s.} in {sup 8}B was also found to undergo two-proton decay to the isobaric analog of {sup 6}Be{sub g.s.} in {sup 6}Li. A 9.69-MeV state in {sup 10}C was found to undergo prompt four-body decay to the 2p + 2{alpha} exit channel. The two protons were found to have a strong enhancement in the diproton region and the relativemore » energies of all four p-{alpha} pairs were consistent with the {sup 5}Li{sub g.s.} resonance.« less

The proportionality between differential cross sections at vanishing linear momentum transfer and Gamow-Teller transition strength, expressed in terms of the unit cross section (${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\sigma}\ifmmode \hat{}\else \^{}\fi{}}}_{\mathit{GT}}$), was studied as a function of target mass number for ($t$,$^{3}\mathrm{He}$) and ($^{3}\mathrm{He}$,$t$) reactions at $115A$ MeV and $140A$ MeV, respectively. Existing ($^{3}\mathrm{He}$,$t$) and ($t$,$^{3}\mathrm{He}$) data on targets with mass number $12\ensuremath{\leqslant}A\ensuremath{\leqslant}120$ were complemented with new and reevaluated ($t$,$^{3}\mathrm{He}$) data on proton, deuteron, $^{6}\mathrm{Li}$, and $^{12}\mathrm{C}$ targets. It was found that in spite of the small difference in beam energies between the two probes, the unit cross sections have a nearly identical and simple dependence on target mass number $A$, for $A\ensuremath{\geqslant}12$: ${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\sigma}\ifmmode \hat{}\else \^{}\fi{}}}_{\mathit{GT}}=109/{A}^{0.65}$. The factorization of the unit cross sections in terms of a kinematical factor, a distortion factor, and the strength of the effective spin-isospin transfer nucleus-nucleus interaction was investigated. Simple phenomenological functions depending on mass number $A$ were extracted for the latter two. By comparison with plane and distorted-wave Born approximation calculations, it was found that the use of a short-range approximation for knock-on exchange contributions to the transition amplitude results in overestimated cross sections for reactions involving the composite ($^{3}\mathrm{He}$,$t$) and ($t$,$^{3}\mathrm{He}$) probes.

$^{8}\mathrm{C}$ is found to decay to four protons and an $\ensuremath{\alpha}$ particle in two $2p$ emission steps. The correlations between the protons in the first step ($^{8}\mathrm{C}$ to $^{6}\mathrm{Be}$) exhibit a significant enhancement in the region of the decay phase space where the two protons have small relative energy, a region sometimes called the diproton region. The decay of the isobaric analog of $^{8}\mathrm{C}$ in $^{8}\mathrm{B}$ is also found to decay by $2p$ emission. This is the first case of isospin-allowed $2p$ decay between isobaric analog states.

The 14O( ,p)17F reaction is an important trigger reaction leading to the p process in x-ray bursts. The inclusion of reaction channels populating excited 17F levels may significantly increase the calculated 14O( ,p)17F reaction rate. A radioactive 17F beam was used at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory Holifield Radioactive Ion Beam Facility to search for a 18Ne resonance at Ec.m.(17F + p) 3.1MeV that had been previously suggested to decay strongly to the first excited level in 17F. No evidence, however, of inelastic 17F + p scattering was observed at this energy, and an upper limit of 10 mb has been set on the inelastic-scattering cross section.

We report on the first successful extraction of a ${\ensuremath{\beta}}^{+}$ Gamow-Teller strength distribution from a radioactive isotope in an intermediate-energy charge-exchange experiment in inverse kinematics. The ($^{7}\mathrm{Li},^{7}\mathrm{Be}+\ensuremath{\gamma}(429\text{ }\text{ }\mathrm{keV})$) reaction at $100A\text{ }\text{ }\mathrm{MeV}$ was used to measure Gamow-Teller transition strengths from $^{34}\mathrm{P}$ to states in $^{34}\mathrm{Si}$. The results show that little mixing occurs between $sd$ and $pf$ shell configurations for the low-lying ${0}^{+}$ and ${2}^{+}$ states even though $^{34}\mathrm{Si}$ neighbors the island of inversion and low-lying $2\ensuremath{\hbar}\ensuremath{\omega}$ intruder states exist. Shell-model calculations in the $sdpf$ model space are consistent with these findings.
