We explore the light induced dynamics in superfluid helium nanodroplets with wide-angle scattering in a pump–probe measurement scheme. The droplets are doped with xenon atoms to facilitate the ignition of a nanoplasma through irradiation with near-infrared laser pulses. After a variable time delay of up to 800 ps, we image the subsequent dynamics using intense extreme ultraviolet pulses from the FERMI free-electron laser. The recorded scattering images exhibit complex intensity fluctuations that are categorized based on their characteristic features. Systematic simulations of wide-angle diffraction patterns are performed, which can qualitatively explain the observed features by employing model shapes with both randomly distributed as well as structured, symmetric distortions. This points to a connection between the dynamics and the positions of the dopants in the droplets. In particular, the structured fluctuations might be governed by an underlying array of quantized vortices in the superfluid droplet as has been observed in previous small-angle diffraction experiments. Our results provide a basis for further investigations of dopant–droplet interactions and associated heating mechanisms.

There is interest in understanding the relaxation mechanisms of photoexcitation in atoms, molecules and other complex systems. Here the authors unravel the photoexcitation and ultrafast relaxation of superfluid helium nanodroplets using a pump-probe experiment with FEL pulses.

Interatomic processes play a crucial role in weakly bound complexes exposed to ionizing radiation; therefore, gaining a thorough understanding of their efficiency is of fundamental importance. Here, we directly measure the timescale of interatomic Coulombic decay (ICD) in resonantly excited helium nanodroplets using a high-resolution, tunable, extreme ultraviolet free-electron laser. Over an extensive range of droplet sizes and laser intensities, we discover the decay to be surprisingly fast, with decay times as short as 400 fs, nearly independent of the density of the excited states. Using a combination of time-dependent density functional theory and ab initio quantum chemistry calculations, we elucidate the mechanisms of this ultrafast decay process, where pairs of excited helium atoms in one droplet strongly attract each other and form merging void bubbles, which drastically accelerates ICD.

Background. Human leukocyte antigen (HLA)-identical living-related (LR) kidney transplant recipients often receive the standard regimen of immunosuppression. We wondered whether these patients should be exposed to the side effects of these drugs any longer. Safe tapering of immunosuppression should not result in rejection and high donor-directed T-cell responses. In the present study, we investigated the effect of tapering azathioprine (AZA) on T-cell reactivity.Methods. Fifteen HLA-identical LR kidney transplant recipients receiving a median of 150 mg/day AZA and 5–10 mg/day prednisone were tapered to a median of 50 mg/day AZA. Donor-, third-party and tetanus toxoid (TET)-reactivity were determined in interferon (IFN)-γ and interleukin (IL)-13 Elispot assays, which reflect the T-helper (Th)1 and T-helper (Th)2 response.Results. After the tapering of AZA, none of the patients developed acute rejection and the renal function remained stable, even at 1-year follow-up. The frequency of donor-specific IFN-γ and IL-13 producing cells (pc) was low. Tapering of AZA did not influence the frequency of both IFN-γ and IL-13 pc. Also, the reactivity against third-party cells and TET remained unchanged.Conclusions. The AZA-dose can be safely reduced in recipients of an HLA-identical LR kidney transplant without affecting kidney function and without increasing T-cell responses directed against donor or other antigens. Ionization dynamics of resonantly excited helium nanodroplets have been studied by intense XUV light. By doping the nanodroplets with atoms that either attach to the surface or submerge into the center of the droplet, one can study the dynamics of excitation and ionization through the droplet. When resonantly exciting the droplet, we observe a strong ionization enhancement for atoms attached to the surface. On the other hand, atoms embedded inside the nanodroplet are less efficiently ionized. We attribute this effect to an ultrafast energy transfer to the surface of the droplet and subsequent Penning ionization of the surface-bound dopant. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction: Specific alleles in human leukocyte antigens (HLAs) are associated with an increased risk of developing drug hypersensitivity reactions induced by abacavir, allopurinol, carbamazepine, oxcarbazepine, phenytoin, lamotrigine, or flucloxacillin. Transplant patients are genotyped for HLA as a routine practice to match a potential donor to a recipient. This study aims to investigate the feasibility and potential impact of repurposing these HLA genotype data from kidney transplant patients to prevent drug hypersensitivity reactions.Methods: A cohort of 1347 kidney transplant recipients has been genotyped in the Leiden University Medical Center (LUMC) using next-generation sequencing (NGS). The risk alleles HLA-A*31:01, HLA-B*15:02, HLA-B*15:11, HLA-B*57:01, and HLA-B*58:01 were retrieved from the NGS data. Medical history, medication use, and allergic reactions were obtained from the patient’s medical records. Carrier frequencies found were compared to a LUMC blood donor population.Results: A total of 13.1% of transplant cohort patients carried at least one of the five HLA risk alleles and therefore had an increased risk of drug-induced hypersensitivity for specific drugs. HLA-A*31:01, HLA-B*15:02, HLA-B*57:01, and HLA-B*58:01 were found in carrier frequencies of 4.61%, 1.19%, 4.46%, and 3.35% respectively. No HLA-B*15:11 carrier was found. In total nine HLA-B*57:01 carriers received flucloxacillin and seven HLA-B*58:01 carriers within our cohort received allopurinol.Discussion: Our study shows that repurposing HLA genotype data from transplantation patients for the assignment of HLA risk alleles associated with drug hypersensitivity is feasible. The use of these data by physicians while prescribing drugs or by the pharmacist when dispensing drugs holds the potential to prevent drug hypersensitivity reactions. The utility of this method was highlighted by 13.1% of the transplant cohort patients carrying an actionable HLA allele.

Sample preparation remains a bottleneck for protein structure determination by cryo-electron microscopy. A frequently encountered issue is that proteins adsorb to the air-water interface of the sample in a limited number of orientations. This makes it challenging to obtain high-resolution reconstructions or may even cause projects to fail altogether. We have previously observed that laser flash melting and revitrification of cryo samples reduces preferred orientation for large, symmetric particles. Here, we demonstrate that our method can in fact be used to scramble the orientation of proteins of a range of sizes and symmetries. The effect can be enhanced for some proteins by increasing the heating rate during flash melting or by depositing amorphous ice onto the sample prior to revitrification. This also allows us to shed light onto the underlying mechanism. Water can be vitrified if it is cooled at high rates, which makes it possible to outrun crystallization in so-called no man's land, a range of deeply supercooled temperatures where water crystallizes rapidly. Here, we study the reverse process in pure water samples by flash melting amorphous ice with microsecond laser pulses. Time-resolved electron diffraction reveals that the sample transiently crystallizes despite a heating rate of more than 5 × 106 K/s, even though under the same conditions, vitrification can be achieved with a similar cooling rate of 107 K/s. Moreover, we observe different crystallization kinetics for amorphous solid water and hyperquenched glassy water. These experiments open up new avenues for elucidating the crystallization mechanism of water and studying its dynamics in no man's land. Water vitrifies if cooled at rates above 3 × 10 5 K/s. In contrast, when the resulting amorphous ice is flash heated, crystallization occurs even at a more than 10 times higher heating rate, as we have recently shown. This may present an issue for microsecond time-resolved cryo-electron microscopy experiments, in which vitreous ice samples are briefly melted with a laser pulse because transient crystallization could potentially alter the dynamics of the embedded proteins. Here, we demonstrate how shaped microsecond laser pulses can be used to increase the heating rate and outrun crystallization. Time-resolved electron diffraction experiments reveal that the critical heating rate for amorphous solid water (ASW) is about 10 8 K/s. Our experiments add to the toolbox of the emerging field of microsecond time-resolved cryo-electron microscopy by demonstrating a straightforward approach for avoiding crystallization during laser melting and for achieving significantly higher heating rates, which paves the way for nanosecond time-resolved experiments.

Observing proteins as they perform their tasks has largely remained elusive, which has left our understanding of protein function fundamentally incomplete. To enable such observations, we have recently proposed a technique that improves the time resolution of cryo-electron microscopy (cryo-EM) to microseconds. Here, we demonstrate that microsecond time-resolved cryo-EM enables observations of fast protein dynamics. We use our approach to elucidate the mechanics of the capsid of cowpea chlorotic mottle virus (CCMV), whose large-amplitude motions play a crucial role in the viral life cycle. We observe that a pH jump causes the extended configuration of the capsid to contract on the microsecond timescale. While this is a concerted process, the motions of the capsid proteins involve different timescales, leading to a curved reaction path. It is difficult to conceive how such a detailed picture of the dynamics could have been obtained with any other method, which highlights the potential of our technique. Crucially, our experiments pave the way for microsecond time-resolved cryo-EM to be applied to a broad range of protein dynamics that previously could not have been observed. A microsecond time-resolved version of cryo-electron microscopy (cryo-EM) has recently been introduced to enable observation of the fast conformational motions of proteins. The technique involves locally melting a cryo sample with a laser beam to allow the proteins to undergo dynamics in the liquid phase. When the laser is switched off, the sample cools within just a few microseconds and revitrifies, trapping particles in their transient configurations, in which they can subsequently be imaged. Two alternative implementations of the technique have previously been described, using either an optical microscope or performing revitrification experiments in situ. Here, it is shown that it is possible to obtain near-atomic resolution reconstructions from in situ revitrified cryo samples. Moreover, the resulting map is indistinguishable from that obtained from a conventional sample within the spatial resolution. Interestingly, it is observed that revitrification leads to a more homogeneous angular distribution of the particles, suggesting that revitrification may potentially be used to overcome issues of preferred particle orientation., (open access.)

A generally accepted understanding of the anomalous properties of water will only emerge if it becomes possible to systematically characterize water in the deeply supercooled regime, from where the anomalies appear to emanate. This has largely remained elusive because water crystallizes rapidly between 160 K and 232 K. Here, we present an experimental approach to rapidly prepare deeply supercooled water at a well-defined temperature and probe it with electron diffraction before crystallization occurs. We show that as water is cooled from room temperature to cryogenic temperature, its structure evolves smoothly, approaching that of amorphous ice just below 200 K. We have recently introduced a novel approach to time-resolved cryo-electron microscopy (cryo-EM) that affords microsecond time resolution. It involves melting a cryo sample with a laser beam to allow dynamics of the embedded particles to occur. Once the laser beam is switched off, the sample revitrifies within just a few microseconds, trapping the particles in their transient configurations, which can subsequently be imaged to obtain a snap shot of the dynamics at this point in time. While we have previously performed such experiments with a modified transmission electron microscope, we here demonstrate a simpler implementation that uses an optical microscope. The large number of interactions in nanoscale systems leads to the emergence of complex behavior. Understanding such complexity requires atomic-resolution observations with a time resolution that is high enough to match the characteristic timescale of the system. Our laboratory's method of choice is time-resolved electron microscopy. A novel approach to time-resolved cryo-electron microscopy (cryo-EM) has recently been introduced that involves melting a cryo sample with a laser beam to allow protein dynamics to briefly occur in the liquid, before trapping the particles in their transient configurations by rapidly revitrifying the sample. With a time resolution of just a few microseconds, this approach is notably fast enough to study the domain motions that are typically associated with the activity of proteins but which have previously remained inaccessible. Here, crucial details are added to the characterization of the method. It is shown that single-particle reconstructions of apoferritin and Cowpea chlorotic mottle virus from revitrified samples are indistinguishable from those from conventional samples, demonstrating that melting and revitrification leaves the particles intact and that they do not undergo structural changes within the spatial resolution afforded by the instrument. How rapid revitrification affects the properties of the ice is also characterized, showing that revitrified samples exhibit comparable amounts of beam-induced motion. The results pave the way for microsecond time-resolved studies of the conformational dynamics of proteins and open up new avenues to study the vitrification process and to address beam-induced specimen movement., (open access.)

The dynamics of proteins that are associated with their function typically occur on the microsecond timescale, orders of magnitude faster than the time resolution of cryo-electron microscopy. We have recently introduced a novel approach to time-resolved cryo-electron microscopy that affords microsecond time resolution. It involves melting a cryo sample with a heating laser, so as to allow dynamics of the proteins to briefly occur in the liquid phase. When the laser is turned off, the sample rapidly revitrifies, trapping the particles in their transient configurations. Precise control of the temperature evolution of the sample is crucial for such an approach to succeed. Here, we provide a detailed characterization of the heat transfer occurring under laser irradiation as well as the associated phase behavior of the cryo sample. While areas close to the laser focus undergo melting and revitrification, surrounding regions crystallize. Plasmonic nanoparticles in aqueous solution have long been known to fragment under irradiation with intense ultrafast laser pulses, creating progeny particles with diameters of a few nanometers. However, the mechanism of this process is still intensely debated, despite numerous experimental and theoretical studies. Here, we use in situ electron microscopy to directly observe the femtosecond laser-induced fragmentation of gold nanoparticles in water, revealing that the process occurs through ejection of individual progeny particles. Our observations suggest that the fragmentation mechanism involves Coulomb fission, which occurs as the femtosecond laser pulses ionize and melt the gold nanoparticle, causing it to eject a highly charged progeny droplet. Subsequent Coulomb fission events, accompanied by solution-mediated etching and growth processes, create complex fragmentation patterns that rapidly fluctuate under prolonged irradiation. Atomic-resolution electron microscopy is a crucial tool to elucidate the structure of matter. Recently, fast electron cameras have added the time domain to high-resolution imaging, allowing static images to be acquired as movies from which sample drift can later be removed computationally and enabling real-time observations of atomic-scale dynamics on the millisecond time scale. Even higher time resolution can be achieved with short electron pulses, yet their potential for atomic-resolution imaging remains unexplored. Here, we generate high-brightness microsecond electron pulses from a Schottky emitter whose current we briefly drive to near its limit. We demonstrate that drift-corrected imaging with such pulses can achieve atomic resolution in the presence of much larger amounts of drift than with a continuous electron beam. Moreover, such pulses enable atomic-resolution observations on the microsecond time scale, which we employ to elucidate the crystallization pathways of individual metal nanoparticles as well as the high-temperature transformation of perovskite nanocrystals.

The rapid growth of the field of time-resolved and ultrafast electron microscopy has been accompanied by the active development of new instrumentation. Recently, time-resolved microscopes equipped with a field emission gun have been introduced, demonstrating great potential for experiments that benefit from the high brightness and coherence of the electron source. Here, we describe a straightforward design of a time-resolved transmission electron microscope with a Schottky field emission gun and characterize its performance. At the same time, our design gives us the flexibility to alternatively operate the instrument as if it was equipped with a flat metal photocathode. We can, thus, effectively choose to sacrifice brightness in order to obtain pulses with vastly larger numbers of electrons than from the emitter if for a given application the number of electrons is a crucial figure of merit. High intensity XUV radiation from a free-electron laser (FEL) was used to create a nanoplasma inside ammonia clusters with the intent of studying the resulting electron-ion interactions and their interplay with plasma evolution. In a plasma-like state, electrons with kinetic energy lower than the local collective Coulomb potential of the positive ionic core are trapped in the cluster and take part in secondary processes (e.g. electron-impact excitation/ionization and electron-ion recombination) which lead to subsequent excited and neutral molecular fragmentation. Using a time-delayed UV laser, the dynamics of the excited atomic and molecular states are probed from -0.1 ps to 18 ps. We identify three different phases of molecular fragmentation that are clearly distinguished by the effect of the probe laser on the ionic and electronic yield. We propose a simple model to rationalize our data and further identify two separate channels leading to the formation of excited hydrogen.

The recent development of ultrafast extreme ultraviolet (XUV) coherent light sources bears great potential for a better understanding of the structure and dynamics of matter. Promising routes are advanced coherent control and nonlinear spectroscopy schemes in the XUV energy range, yielding unprecedented spatial and temporal resolution. However, their implementation has been hampered by the experimental challenge of generating XUV pulse sequences with precisely controlled timing and phase properties. In particular, direct control and manipulation of the phase of individual pulses within an XUV pulse sequence opens exciting possibilities for coherent control and multidimensional spectroscopy, but has not been accomplished. Here, we overcome these constraints in a highly time-stabilized and phase-modulated XUV-pump, XUV-probe experiment, which directly probes the evolution and dephasing of an inner subshell electronic coherence. This approach, avoiding any XUV optics for direct pulse manipulation, opens up extensive applications of advanced nonlinear optics and spectroscopy at XUV wavelengths.

The manipulation of liquids at nanoscale dimensions is a central goal of the emergent nanofluidics field. Such endeavors extend to nanodroplets, which are ubiquitous objects involved in many technological applications. Here, we employ time-resolved electron microscopy to elucidate the formation of so-called jumping nanodroplets on a graphene surface. We flash-melt a thin gold nanostructure with a laser pulse and directly observe how the resulting nanodroplet contracts into a sphere and jumps off its substrate, a process that occurs in just a few nanoseconds. Our study provides the first experimental characterization of these morphological dynamics through real-time observation and reveals new aspects of the phenomenon. We observe that friction alters the trajectories of individual droplets. Surprisingly, this leads some droplets to adopt dumbbell-shaped geometries after they jump, suggesting that they spin with considerable angular momentum. Reshaping plasmonic nanoparticles with laser pulses has been extensively researched as a tool for tuning their properties. However, in the absence of direct observations of the processes involved, important mechanistic details have remained elusive. Here, we present an in situ electron microscopy study of one such process that involves Coulomb fission of plasmonic nanoparticles under femtosecond laser irradiation. We observe that gold nanoparticles encapsulated in a silica shell fission by emitting progeny droplets comprised of about 10-500 atoms, with ejection preferentially occurring along the laser polarization direction. Under continued irradiation, the emitted droplets coalesce into a second core within the silica shell, and the system evolves into a dual-core particle. Our findings are consistent with a mechanism in which electrons are preferentially emitted from the gold core along the laser polarization direction. The resulting anisotropic charge distribution in the silica shell then determines the direction in which progeny droplets are ejected. In addition to yielding insights into the mechanism of Coulomb fission in plasmonic nanoparticles, our experiments point toward a facile method for forming surfaces decorated with aligned dual-gold-core silica shell particles.

Free electrons in a polar liquid can form a bound state via interaction with the molecular environment. This so-called hydrated electron state in water is of fundamental importance, e.g., in cellular biology or radiation chemistry. Hydrated electrons are highly reactive radicals that can either directly interact with DNA or enzymes, or form highly excited hydrogen (H^{*}) after being captured by protons. Here, we investigate the formation of the hydrated electron in real-time employing extreme ultraviolet femtosecond pulses from a free electron laser, in this way observing the initial steps of the hydration process. Using time-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy we find formation timescales in the low picosecond range and resolve the prominent dynamics of forming excited hydrogen states.

A significant fraction of superfluid helium nanodroplets produced in a free-jet expansion has been observed to gain high angular momentum resulting in large centrifugal deformation. We measured single-shot diffraction patterns of individual rotating helium nanodroplets up to large scattering angles using intense extreme ultraviolet light pulses from the FERMI free-electron laser. Distinct asymmetric features in the wide-angle diffraction patterns enable the unique and systematic identification of the three-dimensional droplet shapes. The analysis of a large data set allows us to follow the evolution from axisymmetric oblate to triaxial prolate and two-lobed droplets. We find that the shapes of spinning superfluid helium droplets exhibit the same stages as classical rotating droplets while the previously reported metastable, oblate shapes of quantum droplets are not observed. Our three-dimensional analysis represents a valuable landmark for clarifying the interrelation between morphology and superfluidity on the nanometer scale.

The possibility for helium-induced electronic transitions in a photo-excited atom is investigated using Ba + excited to the 6p 2 P state as a prototypical example. A diabatization scheme has been designed to obtain the necessary potential energy surfaces and couplings for complexes of Ba + with an arbitrary number of helium atoms. It involves computing new He-Ba + electronic wave functions and expanding them in determinants of the non-interacting complex. The 6p 2 P ← 6s 2 S photodissociation spectrum of He⋯Ba + calculated with this model shows very weak coupling for a single He atom. However, several electronic relaxation mechanisms are identified, which could potentially explain the expulsion of barium ions from helium nanodroplets observed experimentally upon Ba + photoexcitation. For instance, an avoided crossing in the ring-shaped He 7 Ba + structure is shown to provide an efficient pathway for fine structure relaxation. Symmetry breaking by either helium density fluctuations or vibrations can also induce efficient relaxation in these systems, e.g., bending vibrations in the linear He 2 Ba + excimer. The identified relaxation mechanisms can provide insight into helium-induced non-adiabatic transitions observed in other systems.

Harmonium is a vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) photon source built within the Lausanne Centre for Ultrafast Science (LACUS). Utilising high harmonic generation, photons from 20-110 eV are available to conduct steady-state or ultrafast photoelectron and photoion spectroscopies (PES and PIS). A pulse preserving monochromator provides either high energy resolution (70 meV) or high temporal resolution (40 fs). Three endstations have been commissioned for: a) PES of liquids; b) angular resolved PES (ARPES) of solids and; c) coincidence PES and PIS of gas phase molecules or clusters. The source has several key advantages: high repetition rate (up to 15 kHz) and high photon flux (1011 photons per second at 38 eV). The capabilities of the facility complement the Swiss ultrafast and X-ray community (SwissFEL, SLS, NCCR MUST, etc.) helping to maintain Switzerland's leading role in ultrafast science in the world.

We present a joint experimental and theoretical study on the desolvation of Ba(+) cations in (4)He nanodroplets excited via the 6p ← 6s transition. The experiments reveal an efficient desolvation process yielding mainly bare Ba(+) cations and Ba(+)Hen exciplexes with n = 1 and 2. The speed distributions of the ions are well described by Maxwell-Boltzmann distributions with temperatures ranging from 60 to 178 K depending on the excitation frequency and Ba(+) Hen exciplex size. These results have been analyzed by calculations based on a time-dependent density functional description for the helium droplet combined with classical dynamics for the Ba(+). In agreement with experiment, the calculations reveal the dynamical formation of exciplexes following excitation of the Ba(+) cation. In contrast to experimental observation, the calculations do not reveal desolvation of excited Ba(+) cations or exciplexes, even when relaxation pathways to lower lying states are included.

The dynamics of Na atoms on the surface of helium nanodroplets following excitation via the 3p ← 3s transition has been investigated using state-specific ion-based detection of the products. Excitation of the system to the 3p (2)Π states is found to lead to the desorption of both bare Na and NaHe exciplexes. The associated speed distributions point to an impulsive desorption process for Na products and a thermally driven process for the NaHe exciplexes. In contrast, excitation of the 3p (2)Σ state leads exclusively to the impulsive desorption of Na atoms. In this case, the desorption is accompanied by a helium-induced relaxation process, as evidenced by the large fraction of detected Na (2)P1/2 atoms. The relaxation process is thought to be related to a crossing between the (2)Π1/2 and (2)Σ potential energy curves at large distance.

The Low Density Matter (LDM) beamline has been built as part of the FERMI free-electron laser (FEL) facility to serve the atomic, molecular and cluster physics community. After the commissioning phase, it received the first external users at the end of 2012. The design and characterization of the LDM photon transport system is described, detailing the optical components of the beamline.

Electronic spectra of molecules in helium droplets reveal spectral features that are related to the elementary excitations of the superfluid helium environment. In order to determine to what extent the interaction strength of the molecule with the helium affects these excitations, the spectrum corresponding to the B̃(2)A″ ← X̃ (2)A″ transition of 2,5-difluorophenol cations in helium droplets has been recorded. The vibronic resonances reveal a sharp zero-phonon line whose width is largely determined by the rotational band contour, followed by a broad structureless phonon wing at higher frequencies. The splitting between the zero-phonon line and phonon wing is approximately half of that found for neutral 2,5-difluorophenol. This difference is attributed to the increased helium density around the ion due to its strong interaction with the helium.

The dynamics of laser-excited sodium atoms at the surface of helium nanodroplets has been investigated as a function of quantum state. For all cases, excitation of the system leads to desorption of the sodium atom from the droplet surface. The mean kinetic energy of the desorbed atoms scales linearly with excitation frequency, indicative of an impulsive desorption process. The energy partitioning between the helium and the desorbing sodium atom depends on the quantum state and appears to be related to the size and shape of the electron orbital. The speed distributions of desorbed NaHe exciplexes point toward a direct formation process of an exciplex with no internal energy. Photoelectron spectroscopy reveals an increasing importance of helium-induced relaxation with increasing quantum state, which is tentatively attributed to curve crossing between different NaHeN interaction potentials during the desorption process.

Whereas most of the phenomena associated with superfluidity have been observed in finite-size helium systems, the nucleation of quantized vortices has proven elusive. Here we show using time-dependent density functional simulations that the solvation of a Ba(+) ion created by photoionization of neutral Ba at the surface of a (4)He nanodroplet leads to the nucleation of a quantized ring vortex. The vortex is nucleated on a 10 ps timescale at the equator of a solid-like solvation structure that forms around the Ba(+) ion. The process is expected to be quite general and very efficient under standard experimental conditions.

The ionization dynamics of He nanodroplets irradiated with intense femtosecond extreme ultraviolet pulses of up to 1013  W/cm2 power density have been investigated by photoelectron spectroscopy. Helium droplets were resonantly excited to atomiclike 2p states with a photon energy of 21.4 eV, below the ionization potential (Ip), and directly into the ionization continuum with 42.8 eV photons. While electron emission following direct ionization above Ip is well explained within a model based on a sequence of direct electron emission events, the resonant excitation provides evidence of a new, collective ionization mechanism involving many excited atomiclike 2p states. With increasing power density the direct photoline due to an interatomic Coulombic decay disappears. It indicates that ionization occurs due to energy exchange between at least three excited atoms proceeding on a femtosecond time scale. In agreement with recent theoretical work the novel ionization process is very efficient and it is expected to be important for many other systems.

Free electron lasers (FELs) offer the unprecedented capability to study reaction dynamics and image the structure of complex systems. When multiple photons are absorbed in complex systems, a plasma-like state is formed where many atoms are ionized on a femtosecond timescale. If multiphoton absorption is resonantly-enhanced, the system becomes electronically-excited prior to plasma formation, with subsequent decay paths which have been scarcely investigated to date. Here, we show using helium nanodroplets as an example that these systems can decay by a new type of process, named collective autoionization. In addition, we show that this process is surprisingly efficient, leading to ion abundances much greater than that of direct single-photon ionization. This novel collective ionization process is expected to be important in many other complex systems, e.g. macromolecules and nanoparticles, exposed to high intensity radiation fields.

The dynamics following the photoexcitation of Ag atoms in (4)He nanodroplets via the 5p (2)P1/2 ← 5s (2)S1/2 and 5p (2)P3/2 ← 5s (2)S1/2 transitions has been investigated in a joint experimental and theoretical effort. It has been experimentally found that upon excitation to the (2)P1/2 state, the Ag atoms are ejected with a speed distribution peaking at about 55 m s(-1). When Ag is excited to the (2)P3/2 state, a rich phenomenology is found. While a fraction of the impurities remains solvated, the impurities that are ejected from the droplets either as Ag or AgHe have speed distributions similar, but not identical, to those found for excitation to the (2)P1/2 state. The experimental findings are qualitatively analyzed within a three-dimensional, time-dependent density functional approach for the helium droplet. The dynamics of the Ag-(4)He1000 system has been followed for several tens of picoseconds, long enough to observe AgHe exciplex formation and the departure of the photoexcited Ag atom from the helium droplet.

The best-known property of superfluid helium is the vanishing viscosity that objects experience while moving through the liquid with speeds below the so-called critical Landau velocity. This critical velocity is generally considered a macroscopic property as it is related to the collective excitations of the helium atoms in the liquid. In the present work we determine to what extent this concept can still be applied to nanometer-scale, finite size helium systems. To this end, atoms and molecules embedded in helium nanodroplets of various sizes are accelerated out of the droplets by means of optical excitation, and the speed distributions of the ejected particles are determined. The measurements reveal the existence of a critical velocity in these systems, even for nanodroplets consisting of only a thousand helium atoms. Accompanying theoretical simulations based on a time-dependent density functional description of the helium confirm and further elucidate this experimental finding.

The ionization dynamics of pure He nanodroplets irradiated by Extreme ultraviolet radiation is studied using Velocity-Map Imaging PhotoElectron-PhotoIon COincidence spectroscopy. We present photoelectron energy spectra and angular distributions measured in coincidence with the most abundant ions He(+), He2(+), and He3(+). Surprisingly, below the autoionization threshold of He droplets, we find indications for multiple excitation and subsequent ionization of the droplets by a Penning-like process. At high photon energies we observe inelastic collisions of photoelectrons with the surrounding He atoms in the droplets.
