Animal Science and Zoology - Abstract
Screaming Cowbird (Molothrus rufoaxillaris) is highly specialized parasitizing only three species, making records of new hosts very informative. During 2017 we studied nesting success on roadsides in Argentine Pampas. Fifty-seven nests (46%) belonged to the known host Brown-and-yellow Marshbirds (Pseudoleistes virescens). Four nests belonged to Scarlet-headed Blackbird (Amblyramphus holosericeus); one contained a Screaming Cowbird nestling that fledged with two of the hosts. We discuss similarities and differences among the Scarlet-headed Blackbird and old hosts. More studies are needed to confirm the regular parasitism of Scarlet-headed Blackbird by Screaming Cowbird, and to better understand their high specificity in host selection.

SET (TAF-1β/I2PP2A) is a ubiquitously expressed, multifunctional protein that plays a role in regulating diverse cellular processes, including cell cycle progression, migration, apoptosis, transcription, and DNA repair. SET expression is ubiquitous across all cell types. However, it is overexpressed or post-translationally modified in several solid tumors and blood cancers, where expression levels are correlated with worsening clinical outcomes. SET exerts its oncogenic effects primarily through the formation of antagonistic protein complexes with the tumor suppressor, protein phosphatase 2A (PP2A), and the well-known metastasis suppressor, nm23-H1. PP2A inhibition is often observed as a secondary driver of tumorigenesis and metastasis in human cancers. Preclinical studies have shown that the pharmacological reactivation of PP2A combined with potent inhibitors of the primary driver oncogene produces synergistic cell death and decreased drug resistance. Therefore, the development of novel inhibitors of the SET-PP2A interaction presents an attractive approach to reactivation of PP2A, and thereby, tumor suppression. NMR provides a unique platform to investigate protein targets in their natively folded state to identify protein and small-molecule ligands and report on the protein internal dynamics. The backbone 1HN, 13C, and 15N NMR resonance assignments were completed for the 204 amino acid nucleosome assembly protein-1 (NAP-1) domain of the human SET oncoprotein (residues 23–225). These assignments provide a vital first step toward the development of novel PP2A reactivators via SET-selective inhibition.

Highlights • VATS technique is minimally invasive and, moreover, it is characterized by a shorter recovery period, a minor blood loss and a shorter hospital stay. • We speak of “Ectopic thyroid gland” when a piece of thyroid tissue is placed at a certain distance from the second to fourth tracheal cartilages. • This case report aims at describing the successful extraction of a massive piece of ectopic thyroid from a young woman’s body, thanks to uniportal VATS., Introduction We speak of “Ectopic thyroid gland” when a piece of thyroid tissue is placed at a certain distance from the second to fourth tracheal cartilages. Presentation of case This case report focuses on a case of a hyperplastic cystic nodule of ectopic thyroid in a 30-year-old woman treated with uniportal video-assisted thoracic surgery (VATS). The patient, was admitted to Emergency Unit for abdominal pain and vomit, underwent a CT which highlighted a mass of significant dimension on the right side of the mediastinum, in contact with close structures. The lesion has been removed with an innovative mini-invasive technique, which is characterized, differently from traditional surgical approaches, by reduced loss of blood and time of hospitalization and, in addiction to that, an aesthetic small-dimensioned scar. Discussion VATS technique is minimally invasive and, moreover, it is characterized by a shorter recovery period, a minor blood loss and a shorter hospital stay. VATS has been advocated since 2010 for pulmonary resections, but today it is also performed for mediastinal intervention and a series of reports have demonstrated that it is feasible and safe. Conclusion The report aims at pointing out the possibility of undergoing this kind of surgery not only in case of pulmonary mass (on which the previous literature has focused) but also when mediastinum lesions occur, as in our case.

In the United States, hypertension affects about one-third of adults and contributes to one out of every seven deaths. Evidence-based treatment is associated with reductions in incidence of stroke, myocardial infarction, and heart failure as well as associated disability and death. This article reviews the ACC/AHA Task Force on Clinical Practice Guidelines' 2017 Guideline for the Prevention, Detection, Evaluation, and Management of High Blood Pressure in Adults. Key changes include reclassification of BP stages and lowering of hypertension treatment goals.

for the 2017 Focused Update to the 2016 Expert Consensus Decision Pathway In 2016, the American College of Cardiology published the first expert consensus decision pathway (ECDP) on the role of non-statin therapies for low-density lipoprotein (LDL)–cholesterol lowering in the management of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) risk. Since the publication of that document, additional evidence and perspectives have emerged from randomized clinical trials and other sources, particularly considering the longer-term efficacy and safety of proprotein convertase subtilisin/kexin 9 (PCSK9) inhibitors in secondary prevention of ASCVD. Most notably, the FOURIER (Further Cardiovascular Outcomes Research with PCSK9 Inhibition in Subjects with Elevated Risk) trial and SPIRE-1 and -2 (Studies of PCSK9 Inhibition and the Reduction of Vascular Events), assessing evolocumab and bococizumab, respectively, have published final results of cardiovascular outcomes trials in patients with clinical ASCVD and in a smaller number of high-risk primary prevention patients. In addition, further evidence on the types of patients most likely to benefit from the use of ezetimibe in addition to statin therapy after acute coronary syndrome has been published. Based on results from these important analyses, the ECDP writing committee judged that it would be desirable to provide a focused update to help guide clinicians more clearly on decision making regarding the use of ezetimibe and PCSK9 inhibitors in patients with clinical ASCVD with or without comorbidities. In the following summary table, changes from the 2016 ECDP to the 2017 ECDP Focused Update are highlighted, and a brief rationale is provided. The content of the full document has been changed accordingly, with more extensive and detailed guidance regarding decision making provided both in the text and in the updated algorithms. Revised recommendations are provided for patients with clinical ASCVD with or without comorbidities on statin therapy for secondary prevention. The ECDP writing committee judged that these new data did not warrant changes to the decision pathways and algorithms regarding the use of ezetimibe or PCSK9 inhibitors in primary prevention patients with LDL-C

Previous studies have shown alcohol-related attentional biases in social drinkers; however, the temporal dynamics of these biases are not well understood. The current study examined this issue in 94 participants (27 male) categorized as binge drinkers (BD) or non-binge drinkers (NBD). Two versions of an alcohol-related attentional blink (AB) paradigm were used: one with words and one with images. It was predicted that BDs (versus NBDs) would exhibit reduced AB for alcohol cues, which would be enhanced for the pictorial version of the task (versus words). The relationships between AB and alcohol craving, quantity and frequency of alcohol consumption, symptoms of alcohol use disorder, and family history of alcohol use disorder (AUD) were also examined. While an AB was observed for both alcohol and non-alcohol targets in the NBD group, no AB was found for alcohol targets in the BD group. Furthermore, the magnitude of the AB was related to drinking, such that higher self-reported hazardous drinking was associated with smaller ABs to alcohol-related targets. However, AB was not related to craving or family history of AUD. These results suggest that alcohol-related stimuli are processed more efficiently by BDs, especially those with hazardous alcohol consumption patterns. These results may inform treatment and prevention efforts targeting binge drinkers.

We assessed overall job satisfaction and factors of job satisfaction among physician assistants (PAs) practicing cardiovascular medicine in the United States. Job satisfaction among health care providers is associated with provider satisfaction and retention, reduced health care costs, increased patient satisfaction, and improved health care. Research regarding job satisfaction among physicians and nurse practitioners has been conducted, but knowledge of job satisfaction among PAs is limited, dated, and inadequate. Job satisfaction among PAs in cardiology, a specialty with a disparity between provider supply and demand, has not been investigated. A quantitative, correlational, descriptive study was conducted using participants from the Association of Physician Assistants in Cardiology database. Overall job satisfaction, 45 factors of job satisfaction, and 6 composite factors were calculated. Correlational analysis was performed for factors most associated with overall job satisfaction. Overall job satisfaction was high. Most PAs (87.3%) were satisfied or very satisfied. Physician assistants were most satisfied with job factors related to challenge and autonomy, and these factors had the greatest correlation to overall job satisfaction. Findings can guide employers, health care administrators, and policy makers to promote job satisfaction among PAs in cardiology and provide insights into job satisfaction among PAs in general.

In 2016, the American College of Cardiology published the first expert consensus decision pathway (ECDP) on the role of non-statin therapies for low-density lipoprotein (LDL)-cholesterol lowering in the management of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) risk. The ECDP writing committee judged that these new data did not warrant changes to the decision pathways and algorithms regarding the use of ezetimibe or PCSK9 inhibitors in primary prevention patients with LDL-C 190 mg/dL with or without diabetes mellitus or patients without ASCVD and LDL-C ≥190 mg/dL not due to secondary causes. Based on feedback and further deliberation, the ECDP writing committee down-graded recommendations regarding bile acid sequestrant use, recommending bile acid sequestrants only as optional secondary agents for consideration in patients intolerant to ezetimibe. For clarification, the writing committee has also included new information on diagnostic categories of heterozygous and homozygous familial hypercholesterolemia, based on clinical criteria with and without genetic testing. Other changes to the original document were kept to a minimum to provide consistent guidance to clinicians, unless there was a compelling reason or new evidence, in which case justification is provided.

Human papillomavirus (HPV) infection is linked to improved survival in response to chemo‐radiotherapy for patients with oropharynx head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC). However, mechanisms involved in increased HNSCC cell death by HPV signaling in response to therapy are largely unknown. Here, using molecular, pharmacologic and genetic tools, we show that HPV early protein 7 (E7) enhances ceramide‐mediated lethal mitophagy in response to chemotherapy‐induced cellular stress in HPV‐positive HNSCC cells by selectively targeting retinoblastoma protein (RB). Inhibition of RB by HPV‐E7 relieves E2F5, which then associates with DRP1, providing a scaffolding platform for Drp1 activation and mitochondrial translocation, leading to mitochondrial fission and increased lethal mitophagy. Ectopic expression of a constitutively active mutant RB, which is not inhibited by HPV‐E7, attenuated ceramide‐dependent mitophagy and cell death in HPV(+) HNSCC cells. Moreover, mutation of E2F5 to prevent Drp1 activation inhibited mitophagy in HPV(+) cells. Activation of Drp1 with E2F5‐mimetic peptide for inducing Drp1 mitochondrial localization enhanced ceramide‐mediated mitophagy and led to tumor suppression in HPV‐negative HNSCC‐derived xenograft tumors in response to cisplatin in SCID mice.

Increasing land transformation from grassland to crops in the Pampas Region leads to habitat fragmentation for birds. Unused habitat margins provide food, shelter and corridors to birds. We described bird community and resources for birds in road borders adjacent to three road types (unpaved and paved of one or two lanes per hand) in General Madariaga, Buenos Aires Province. We estimated bird abundance, and its association with arthropod availability and vegetation cover. Borders of unpaved roads showed higher bird abundance and richness than those from both kind of paved roads, and higher diversity than borders of paved roads with one lane per hand. The abundance of bird species of high conservation value was higher in unpaved and two-lanes than in one-lane paved roads. Arthropod availability did not vary between roads and did not affect insectivorous birds’ abundance. More cover of reedbed and bulrush and less cover of bare ground had a positive effect on the abundance of birds of higher conservation value and a negative effect on the abundance of birds of less concern. Our results suggest that unpaved roads are the most suitable for birds. Among paved roads, one-lane roads are the least suitable, but this may be due to the higher reedbed-bulrush cover of two-lanes which may favour the species of higher conservation value. Future studies are needed in order to detect which other factors influence the abundance of birds of higher conservation value in unpaved and one lane per hand roads and to confirm the importance of redbeed and bulrush for these species.

Results are presented from a search for particle dark matter (DM), extra dimensions, and unparticles using events containing a jet and an imbalance in transverse momentum. The data were collected by the CMS detector in proton–proton collisions at the LHC and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 19.7\documentclass[12pt]{minimal} \usepackage{amsmath} \usepackage{wasysym} \usepackage{amsfonts} \usepackage{amssymb} \usepackage{amsbsy} \usepackage{mathrsfs} \usepackage{upgreek} \setlength{\oddsidemargin}{-69pt} \begin{document}$$\,\text {fb}^\text {-1}$$\end{document}fb-1at a centre-of-mass energy of 8\documentclass[12pt]{minimal} \usepackage{amsmath} \usepackage{wasysym} \usepackage{amsfonts} \usepackage{amssymb} \usepackage{amsbsy} \usepackage{mathrsfs} \usepackage{upgreek} \setlength{\oddsidemargin}{-69pt} \begin{document}$$\,{\mathrm{TeV}}\,$$\end{document}TeV. The number of observed events is found to be consistent with the standard model prediction. Limits are placed on the DM-nucleon scattering cross section as a function of the DM particle mass for spin-dependent and spin-independent interactions. Limits are also placed on the scale parameter \documentclass[12pt]{minimal} \usepackage{amsmath} \usepackage{wasysym} \usepackage{amsfonts} \usepackage{amssymb} \usepackage{amsbsy} \usepackage{mathrsfs} \usepackage{upgreek} \setlength{\oddsidemargin}{-69pt} \begin{document}$$M_\mathrm {D}$$\end{document}MD in the Arkani-Hamed, Dimopoulos, and Dvali (ADD) model of large extra dimensions, and on the unparticle model parameter \documentclass[12pt]{minimal} \usepackage{amsmath} \usepackage{wasysym} \usepackage{amsfonts} \usepackage{amssymb} \usepackage{amsbsy} \usepackage{mathrsfs} \usepackage{upgreek} \setlength{\oddsidemargin}{-69pt} \begin{document}$${{\Lambda _\mathrm{U}}} $$\end{document}ΛU. The constraints on ADD models and unparticles are the most stringent limits in this channel and those on the DM-nucleon scattering cross section are an improvement over previous collider results.

Using data obtained with the ALEPH detector at the Z resonance, a measure based on transverse momentum is shown to exhibit a correlation between the two halves of a hadronic event which cannot be explained by energy-momentum conservation, flavour conservation, the imposition of an event axis or imperfect event reconstruction. Two possible interpretations based on existing Monte Carlo models are examined: a) ARIADNE, with the correlation forming early in the parton shower and with the transition from partons to hadrons playing only a minor part; b) JETSET, with the correlation forming at the fragmentation stage. A correlation technique based on a jet cluster analysis is used to make a comparison of the models with the data. It is concluded that both non-perturbative and perturbative effects make important contributions to the observed correlation. - Abstract
The purpose of the STSM was to carry out a multifactor analysis on a dataset based on more than 300 on-site measurements of airborne sound insulation of façade, deriving from different sources and different building typology. Various aspects for the descriptors, frequency ranges and spectrum adaptation terms were evaluated and investigated. To assess the influence of such parameters, "correlation factors" were utilized. Effects of room volumes, test and windows areas, window's and wall's typologies and façade shape were also analyzed.

Objective To evaluate the nature, frequency, and predictors of adverse events during the use of propofol by pediatric hospitalists. Study design We reviewed 1649 charts of patients sedated with propofol by pediatric hospitalists at St Louis Children's Hospital between January 2005 and September 2009. Results Hospitalists were able to complete 1633 of the 1649 sedations reviewed (99%). Major complications included 2 patients with aspiration and 1 patient intubated to complete the study. We observed a 74% reduction in the number of patients with respiratory events and airway interventions from 2005 to 2009. Predictors of respiratory events were history of snoring (OR, 2.40; 95% CI, 1.52-3.80), American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) physical status classification of ASA 3 (OR, 2.30; 95% CI, 1.22-4.33), age >12 years (OR, 4.01; 95% CI, 2.02-7.98), premedication with midazolam (OR, 1.85; 95% CI, 1.15-2.98), and use of adjuvant glycopyrrolate (OR, 4.70; 95% CI, 2.35-9.40). All except ASA 3 status were also predictors for airway intervention. There was a decline in the prevalence of all of these predictors over the study years ( P Conclusion Our pediatric hospitalists implemented a successful propofol sedation program that realized a 74% reduction in respiratory events and airway interventions between 2005 and 2009. Decreased prevalence of the predictors of adverse events that we identified likely contributed to this reduction.

prove in opera ,classificazione acustica - Abstract

Summary.-A study was conducted in three American cities on the use of personal advertisements. 400 advertisers were sent questionnaires about their reasons for using this medium and the results of their experience with this system of meeting people. The 88 respondents were well-educated and successful financially but felt disconnected from traditional modes of meeting others (family, friends, work). Placement of advertisements may represent an effective strategy for some people to cope with this predicament. The dilemma for many contemporary single individuals is to find new methods of meeting others, and Woll and Cozby (1987) have identified several of these methods: fax dating services, videodating, computer dating, telephone introductions, radio shows, cable television, and personal advertisements. One method, personal advertisements, has recently become popular (Woll & Cozby, 1987). Prior analyses of the content of personal advertisements show (Bolig, Stein, & McKenry, 1984; Cameron, Oskamp, & Sparks, 1977; Sitton & Rippee, 1986) that personal advertisements have become a means for the busy professional to save time and effort in dating. Although several studies have analyzed advertisement content, very few have obtained information from the writers themselves, a valuable source of data (Lynn & Bolig, 1985). The present study surveyed advertisers to examine the use of the personal advertisements in publications at three different urban sites, Seattle, Chicago, and Washington, DC. We were looking at whether lacking other means of initiating relationships was the determining factor in use of advertisements and whether the majority of the writers could be considered desirable by others.
