Gray-level co-occurrence matrix (GLCM) analysis is a contemporary and innovative computational method for the assessment of textural patterns, applicable in almost any area of microscopy. The aim of our research was to perform the GLCM analysis of cell nuclei in Saccharomyces cerevisiae yeast cells after the induction of sublethal cell damage with ethyl alcohol, and to evaluate the performance of various machine learning (ML) models regarding their ability to separate damaged from intact cells. For each cell nucleus, five GLCM parameters were calculated: angular second moment, inverse difference moment, GLCM contrast, GLCM correlation, and textural variance. Based on the obtained GLCM data, we applied three ML approaches: neural network, random trees, and binomial logistic regression. Statistically significant differences in GLCM features were observed between treated and untreated cells. The multilayer perceptron neural network had the highest classification accuracy. The model also showed a relatively high level of sensitivity and specificity, as well as an excellent discriminatory power in the separation of treated from untreated cells. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study to demonstrate that it is possible to create a relatively sensitive GLCM-based ML model for the detection of alcohol-induced damage in Saccharomyces cerevisiae cell nuclei.

In recent years, various AI-based methods have been developed in order to uncover chemico-biological interactions associated with DNA damage and oxidative stress. Various decision trees, bayesian networks, random forests, logistic regression models, support vector machines as well as deep learning tools, have great potential in the area of molecular biology and toxicology, and it is estimated that in the future, they will greatly contribute to our understanding of molecular and cellular mechanisms associated with DNA damage and repair. In this concise review, we discuss recent attempts to build machine learning tools for assessment of radiation - induced DNA damage as well as algorithms that can analyze the data from the most frequently used DNA damage assays in molecular biology. We also review recent works on the detection of antioxidant proteins with machine learning, and the use of AI-related methods for prediction and evaluation of noncoding DNA sequences. Finally, we discuss previously published research on the potential application of machine learning tools in aging research.

Background In 2010, the American Heart Association introduced a new concept of ideal cardiovascular health (CVH) defined as the simultaneous presence of 7 favorable CVH metrics (smoking, diet, physical activity, body mass index, blood pressure, total cholesterol, and fasting blood glucose). The objective of this study was to conduct a systematic literature review and meta-analysis of studies examining the prevalence of ideal CVH, and each of the ideal CVH metrics as well as the relationship between socio-demographic determinants and ideal CVH. Methods A comprehensive literature search was conducted in Medline and Scopus databases for studies published between 1 January 2010 and 30 June 2020. A total of 50 studies including 2,148,470 participants were analyzed. Associations were estimated using DerSimonian-Laird random-effect models. Heterogeneity was investigated through subgroup analyses, Q-test, and I2 statistics. Results This study showed a low prevalence of ideal CVH defining as 6 and 7 ideal metrics (3.3%). Among seven ideal CVH metrics, smoking was the best metric (71%), while the poorest CVH metric was a healthy diet (5.8%). Gender was a statistically significant moderator of ideal smoking (81% in females and 60% in males) and ideal blood pressure (42% in females and 30% in males). Females and young adults had better CVH status compared to males and older adults. Also, more educated and better-off individuals had a greater number of ideal CVH metrics. Conclusions To the best of our knowledge, this is the first systematic review on the relationship between participants’ socioeconomic status and ideal CVH. The results suggest that the prevalence of ideal CVH and most metrics was unsatisfactory. In order to achieve the improvement of the CVH metrics and the overall ideal CVH, nationwide prevention efforts at the population and individual levels are urgently needed.

Aims: This study aimed to assess age- and sex-related differences in management and 1-year risk for all-cause mortality and hospitalization in chronic heart failure (HF) patients. Methods and results: Of 16 354 patients included in the European Society of Cardiology Heart Failure Long-Term Registry, 9428 chronic HF patients were analysed [median age: 66 years; 28.5% women; mean left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) 37%]. Rates of use of guideline-directed medical therapy (GDMT) were high (angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors/angiotensin receptor blockers, beta-blockers and mineralocorticoid receptor antagonists: 85.7%, 88.7% and 58.8%, respectively). Crude GDMT utilization rates were lower in women than in men (all differences: P ≤ 0.001), and GDMT use became lower with ageing in both sexes, at baseline and at 1-year follow-up. Sex was not an independent predictor of GDMT prescription; however, age >75 years was a significant predictor of GDMT underutilization. Rates of all-cause mortality were lower in women than in men (7.1% vs. 8.7%; P = 0.015), as were rates of all-cause hospitalization (21.9% vs. 27.3%; P 75 years. Conclusions: There was a decline in GDMT use with advanced age in both sexes. Sex was not an independent predictor of GDMT or adverse outcomes. However, age >75 years independently predicted lower GDMT use and higher all-cause mortality in patients with LVEF ≤45%. © 2019 The Authors. Aims: We assessed the interplay between hyperkalaemia (HK) and renin–angiotensin–aldosterone system inhibitor (RAASi) use, dose and discontinuation, and their association with all-cause or cardiovascular death in patients with chronic heart failure (HF). We hypothesized that HK-associated increased death may be related to RAASi withdrawal. Methods and results: The ESC-HFA-EORP Heart Failure Long-Term Registry was used. Among 9222 outpatients (HF with reduced ejection fraction: 60.6%, HF with mid-range ejection fraction: 22.9%, HF with preserved ejection fraction: 16.5%) from 31 countries, 16.6% had HK (≥5.0 mmol/L) at baseline. Angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitor (ACEi) or angiotensin receptor blocker (ARB) was used in 88.3%, a mineralocorticoid receptor antagonist (MRA) in 58.7%, or a combination in 53.2%; of these, at ≥50% of target dose in ACEi: 61.8%; ARB: 64.7%; and MRA: 90.3%. At a median follow-up of 12.2 months, there were 789 deaths (8.6%). Both hypokalaemia and HK were independently. associated with higher mortality, and ACEi/ARB prescription at baseline with lower mortality. MRA prescription was not retained in the model. In multivariable analyses, HK at baseline was independently associated with MRA non-prescription at baseline and subsequent discontinuation. When considering subsequent discontinuation of RAASi (instead of baseline use), HK was no longer found associated with all-cause deaths. Importantly, all RAASi (ACEi, ARB, or MRA) discontinuations were strongly associated with mortality. Conclusions: In HF, hyper- and hypokalaemia were associated with mortality. However, when adjusting for RAASi discontinuation, HK was no longer associated with mortality, suggesting that HK may be a risk marker for RAASi discontinuation rather than a risk factor for worse outcomes. © 2020 European Society of Cardiology

Introduction/Background During the last three decades, fertility preservation was established as a new treatment modality for young patients with early cervical cancer, less than 2 cm, using different surgical approaches and techniques such as vaginal or abdominal simple or radical trachelectomy, total laparoscopic or robotic trachelectomy even large conisation with laparoscopic lympadenectomy. A further goal for gynecological oncology is to consider a fertility-preserving approach in patients with bulky cervical cancer, without compromising the oncology outcome. Methodology The thirty years old nulliparous with uterine sqamous cervix cancer FIGO stage IB2, 3 cm, underwent neoadjuvant chemotherapy, three cycles of Cisplatin and Ifosfamide dose dense regime according to Prague protocol. MRI was performed pre and post NACT treatment. Results Due to complete pathologic response after three cycles of neoadjuvant chemotherapy conservative surgery was performed. The patient underwent laparoscopic pelvic lymphadenectomy, uterine cervix conisation and the cervical canal curettage. The histopathology of specimen confirmed the complete response, with H SIL only. There was no need for adjuvant treatment. At the first follow up the length of uterine cervix was sufficient and PAP smear was normal. One year after surgery, patient is without disease. At the last control she was in sixteen weeks of gestation. Conclusion Until now, small case control studies concluded that neoadjuvant chemotherapy followed by conservative fertility spare surgery in young patients with bulky cervical cancer who respond well to chemotherapy, is an acceptable approach. Still, more evaluation and data is needed for this group of patients before widespread use. Disclosure Nothing to disclose.

Aims: Classification of acute heart failure (AHF) patients into four clinical profiles defined by evidence of congestion and perfusion is advocated by the 2016 European Society of Cardiology (ESC)guidelines. Based on the ESC-EORP-HFA Heart Failure Long-Term Registry, we compared differences in baseline characteristics, in-hospital management and outcomes among congestion/perfusion profiles using this classification. Methods and results: We included 7865 AHF patients classified at admission as: ‘dry-warm’ (9.9%), ‘wet-warm’ (69.9%), ‘wet-cold’ (19.8%) and ‘dry-cold’ (0.4%). These groups differed significantly in terms of baseline characteristics, in-hospital management and outcomes. In-hospital mortality was 2.0% in ‘dry-warm’, 3.8% in ‘wet-warm’, 9.1% in ‘dry-cold’ and 12.1% in ‘wet-cold’ patients. Based on clinical classification at admission, the adjusted hazard ratios (95% confidence interval) for 1-year mortality were: ‘wet-warm’ vs. ‘dry-warm’ 1.78 (1.43–2.21) and ‘wet-cold’ vs. ‘wet-warm’ 1.33 (1.19–1.48). For profiles resulting from discharge classification, the adjusted hazard ratios (95% confidence interval) for 1-year mortality were: ‘wet-warm’ vs. ‘dry-warm’ 1.46 (1.31–1.63) and ‘wet-cold’ vs. ‘wet-warm’ 2.20 (1.89–2.56). Among patients discharged alive, 30.9% had residual congestion, and these patients had higher 1-year mortality compared to patients discharged without congestion (28.0 vs. 18.5%). Tricuspid regurgitation, diabetes, anaemia and high New York Heart Association class were independently associated with higher risk of congestion at discharge, while beta-blockers at admission, de novo heart failure, or any cardiovascular procedure during hospitalization were associated with lower risk of residual congestion. Conclusion: Classification based on congestion/perfusion status provides clinically relevant information at hospital admission and discharge. A better understanding of the clinical course of the two entities could play an important role towards the implementation of targeted strategies that may improve outcomes. © 2019 The Authors. Background Cardiovascular diseases (CVD) remain the most significant cause of death in low- and middle-income countries where the burden of CVD continues to rise due to the increasing incidence of CVD. The aim of this study was to assess the prevalence of ideal cardiovascular health (CVH) across sex and age groups and to analyze associations between demographic and socio-economic variables and ideal CVH metrics in the adult population of the Republic of Serbia. Methods Information on demographic (age, sex, marital status, and type of settlement) and socio-economic characteristics (education, and wealth index), and the 7 ideal CVH metrics (smoking, physical activity, healthy diet, BMI, blood pressure, cholesterol, and glucose) was obtained for 13100 respondents aged 20 years and above, from the 2013 National Health Survey in the Republic of Serbia. According to the American Heart Association, the ideal CVH was defined as the simultaneous presence of 7 ideal CVH metrics. Results Out of all ideal CVH metrics, the most prevalent components were ideal glucose (92.2%), ideal cholesterol (86.4%) and ideal smoking (63%), while the least prevalent ideal CVH component was ideal healthy diet (2.4%). Only 0.1% had all 7 CVH components at the ideal level. According to the multivariable logistic regression analysis the higher number of ideal CVH metrics was observed in women (OR = 4.46), younger people (OR = 7.12), people living without partner (OR = 1.70), more educated (OR = 2.51 for middle educated and OR = 3.57 for high educated), as well as among the rich (OR = 1.43). Conclusion Our findings of existing age-specific, sex and socio-economic differences in the prevalence and number of ideal CVH metrics should serve for the development of appropriate CVD prevention policies tailored to fit specific needs of both sexes, all age groups and people with different socioeconomic status.

In the quantum information theory operates with qubits and N-qubits that can be express through coherent states. Density operator admits a representation in terms of coherent states formalism. Consequently, in this paper the notions of qubit and density operators are described in the framework of coherent states. We have expressed a qubit as a coherent state, and thus a sequence of qubits becomes the tensor product of the coherent states. For the ensembles of qubits, it could be used the density operator, in order to describe the informational content of the ensemble. The coherent states representation may play an important role in the quantum information theory and the use of this formalism is not only theoretical, but also, due to its applications, of some practical relevance.

A vertical pin photodiode with a thick intrinsic layer is integrated in a 0.15 µm CMOS process. A deep n-well (N-ISO) allows increase of the reverse voltage of the pin photodiode far above the circuit supply voltage enabling a high drift velocity. Therefore, the large thickness of the intrinsic layer and the high reverse voltage lead to a high dynamic quantum efficiency and to a high bandwidth. The maximum responsivity of 0.46 A/W was measured at 730 nm corresponding to a quantum efficiency of 78.3%. For 850 nm, the −3 dB bandwidth of 700 MHz and for 650 nm the −3 dB bandwidth of 1.2 GHz was obtained at −8 V.

A number of biotechnology applications are based on protein design. For this design, the relationship between a protein’s primary structure and its conformation is of vital importance. A β-sheet is a common feature of a protein’s two-dimensional structure; therefore, elucidating the principles governing β-sheet structure and its stability is critical for understanding the protein-folding process. In the three-dimensional representation of protein molecules, C α carbon coordinates (carbon atom immediately adjacent to the carboxylate group) have often been employed instead of the complete set of coordinates for the corresponding residues. Using the C α carbon coordinates, we showed that particular amino acids are not randomly distributed within a β-sheet structure. On the basis of a new statistical approach for the analysis of a spatial distribution of amino acids in a protein, presented by their physico-chemical parameters, the electron–ion interaction potential (EIIP) and hydrophobicity, are described here. The relationship between amino acid positions inside the β-sheet and the EIIP and hydrophobicity parameters was established. The correlation between amino acid propensities related to the β-sheet was examined using multiple cross-spectra analysis. We also applied the continuous wavelet transform for the analysis of selected β-sheet structures using the EIIP and hydrophobicity parameters. The findings provide new insight into conformational propensities of amino acids for the adaption of β-sheet structures.

We investigated the low energy satellites in the Rontgen spectra using the many-particle theory. These satellites are results of the radiative semi-Auger decay of the inner vacancy states. We did not treat only ordinary radiative decay. There exist the excitations of one of the atomic electrons together with the photon emission. We presented results of radiative semi-Auger decays of vacancy states in Ar atom. The knowledge of these processes is important for understanding the same processes in the case of the nanoparticles (molecules, fullerenes, clusters). Research in the field of the new materials requires more sophisticating methods which will open the new possibilities for obtaining materials of particular design, too. The idea that the phase of single-mode field may be correctly defined as a phase difference between the state considered and a highly excited coherent state treated as the reference phase state, although present in discussions about the quantum phase problem, have not been directly concretized and its consequences fully understood. In the present work we succeed in finding an effective mathematical procedure which corresponds exactly to this idea and so derive, using the results related to phase difference available in the literature, the phase distribution for a single-mode field. We discuss the obtained results.

We give a definition of quantum states which behave classically based on minimal number of physically reasonable requirements. We prove that an infinite unique class of states exists which satisfies this definition and we show that every state from this class may be generated in the unique way departing from some corresponding strictly quantum state. We discuss some implications of the obtained results.

The problem of finding a density matrix corresponding to a Husimi distribution is solved in a simple, new way. It is shown how the proposed procedure may be effectively used to answer the question raised in the title.

All the available small-angle S(Q) data for liquid metals have been collected, using data from neutron and X-ray diffraction as well as from molecular dynamics simulations (MD). In the present paper, attention is focussed on a series of liquid metals with a systematic increase in the density of valence electrons, such as sodium, copper, aluminum, lead and bismuth. In order to show the difference between and non-metallic liquids, liquid argon is also included as a reference system. The shape of S(Q) in this small-Q region can be described analytically by a series expansion in powers of Q Q 0 . Systematic variations of the expansion coefficients as a function of the density of valence electrons are found. Particular coefficients of the series expansion are calculated and tabulated. The accuracy of the present collection of structure factor data does not allow any conclusion to be drawn about the existence of a linear term in the expansion for any liquid metal. This behaviour is dependent on the long-range part of the effective potential in the RPA approximation.

Neutron incoherent quasielastic scattering experiments on the liquid crystal MBBA in the nematic phase are reported. Taking advantage of published NMR results it is shown that the motion of an oriented MBBA molecule is composed of two parts. The 12 protons of the butyl end and alkoxy chains perform uniaxial rotational diffusion with a diffusion constant of 1010s−1 while the 9 protons of the rigid benzylideneaniline core are restricted to a uniaxial simple rotational diffusion on a segment of a circle of an apex angle of 57° with an associated rate constant of 2.3 × 1010s−1.

Advanced cervical cancer still represents a major health care challenge in the developing world. According to standard protocols the treatment of choice for stage IIB cervical cancer is cisplatin-based chemoradiotherapy. However, in some European countries, and especially in Japan, patients with stage IIB cervical cancer are generally treated with radical hysterectomy as initial treatment. The aim of this study was to compare clinical stage with pathological findings, and also to correlate any relationship between parametrial infiltration and nodal status.From 1997 to 2006, 26 patients with FIGO stage IIB cervical cancer were radically operated (Piver class III operation). Preoperative clinical findings were compared with the pathological findings of the surgical material. The correlation between infiltration of the parametria and lymph node status was also examined. Fisher's exact test was used to examine statistical significance.The patients' median age was 48.3 years (range 36-61). The median number of removed lymph nodes was 16 (range 8-40). The histopathological types of cervical tumors were: squamous cell carcinoma 80%, adenosquamous carcinoma 15% and adenocarcinoma 5%. In 50% of the patients the parametria were infiltrated, suggesting that 50% of the patients were clinically overstaged. Positive lymph nodes were found in 69% of patients with positive parametria and 15% in patients with negative parametria (p0.05). Patients with positive lymph nodes received adjuvant chemoradiotherapy.Adequate preoperative staging such as clinical examination under anesthesia or nuclear magnetic resonance could help to exclude parametrial involvement in equivocal cases. Parametrial invasion presents an important risk factor for lymph nodes metastases.

The emission of particulate matter and gaseous compounds during combustion of wood and refuse-derived fuel in a small batch reactor is investigated by laser mass-spectrometric on-line measurement techniques for gas-phase analysis and simultaneous registration of physical aerosol properties (number size distribution). The gas-phase composition is addressed by a laser-based mass spectrometric method, namely, vacuum-UV single-photon ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (VUV-SPI-TOFMS). Particle-size distributions are measured with a scanning mobility particle sizer. Furthermore, a photoelectric aerosol sensor is applied for detection of particle-bound polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. The different phases of wood combustion are distinguishable by both the chemical profiles of gas-phase components (e.g., polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, PAH) and the particle-size distribution. Furthermore, short disturbances of the combustion process due to air supply shortages are investigated regarding their effect on particle-size distribution and gas-phase composition, respectively. It is shown that the combustion conditions strongly influence the particle-size distribution as well as on the emission of particle-bound polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons.

Combustion-related soot particles in the state of formation were sampled from the stoker system of a 0.5 MW incineration pilot plant. The plant was operated with wood as feeding material. Samples were taken in different air supply zones at different heights over the feed bed. Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) which are adsorbed on the soot particles were analyzed by Fourier transform laser microprobe mass spectrometry (FT LMMS). The structure of the observed PAH patterns was analyzed using a multivariate statistical method (principle component analysis, PCA). The samples obtained closest to the feed bed near the first three air supply zones exhibit the most significant differences in the PAH patterns. This result is due to different contribution of the elementary processes (drying, pyrolysis, gasification, and combustion) in the different zones. Possible applications for monitoring the combustion efficiency of incinerators are discussed.

Using the Glauber model of linear phase insensitive amplifier as the basis, we establish a general condition which must be obeyed by every operator referred to the quantum phase. We demonstrate that this condition defines a class of acceptable Hermitian quantum phase operators, and that an additional physical requirement leads to the unique quantum phase operator. It turns out that this is the same operator which for the first time has been suggested by H. Paul [Fortschr. Phys. 22, 657 (1974)] and has been widely discussed in the literature. [S0031-9007(98)06802-1].

The alloys Zr-Cu-Ti and Zr-Cu have been prepared by melt-spinning and mechanical alloying techniques. Their thermal behaviour and structure factors have been investigated. Thermal properties obtained by differential scanning calorimetry, of an amorphous alloy (54Zr34Cu10Ti), were tested in argon and nitrogen atmospheres. It was shown that crystallization (devitrification) proceeds through five different stages within the temperature range 565 to 976 K. Particular attention is paid to a discussion of the crystallization process of each stage in correlation with the results obtained by X-ray analysis.

Using the description of the linear phase insensitive amplification of a quantum state available in the literature we prove that to every state rho(t), produced from the initial state rho(0) by such amplification, there corresponds a phase space distribution lambda(2)D(0)(lambda(q), lambda p), where D-0(q, p) is the Husimi function of the initial state. The scaling parameter lambda satisfies the relation 0 LT lambda LT 1 and decreases with time while, as we have shown earlier, the scaled function is again a Husimi distribution. We prove, using these facts, that if the definition of the phase insensitive amplification is physically correct then the distribution of the phase of a state is unambiguously given as the corresponding marginal distribution obtained from its Husimi distribution represented in polar coordinates.

The author utilizes the results for the republic of Serbia of a 1986 survey conducted in Yugoslavia. She analyzes the impact of migration on economic development and social change and considers length of migrants' stay, labor migration, migrant origins, and size of migratory flows from other republics, provinces, and abroad. The dynamic scattering functions S(Q,E) experimentally determined for liquid lead at 623 and 1173K and for liquid bismuth at 578K have been used to derive the corresponding intermediate scattering functions F(Q,t). The procedure involved a fitting of a sum of gaussians to the measured S(Q,E). Theoretical checkpoints are that the zeroth and the second energy moments are satisfactorily fulfilled. It is concluded that the F(Q,t) obtained are of sufficiently good quality to serve as a basis for deriving various memory functions for comparison with modern kinetic theories.

Experimentally determined coherent dynamic scattering functions for liquid bismuth and lead are used to derive the van Hove correlation functions G(r,t) and Gs(r,t). It is demonstrated that it is possible to obtain direct and physically adequate information on the atomic self-motion from a neutron inelastic scattering measurement on a completely coherent scatterer.

The static structure factor S(q) of liquid germanium is determined at 1123K by neutron diffraction techniques in the range from 0.4 to 8.5 AA-1. The structure factor shows a clear low-lying shoulder on the high side of the scattering angle, near the first peak of S(q). These two peaks indicate a dual structure of the germanium melt. The first one characterises the short-range order and the 'irregular' one is associated with a certain degeneracy of the atomic states of the liquid around the imperfections of the structure, which appear as single vacancies.

In slow neutron physics, the true neutron-nucleus potential is replaced by the Fermi pseudo-potential. We discuss the adequacy of applying this potential for various elements and various values of the wave vectork. In order to do this, we form an electrical model for the Schrodinger equation that describes the elastic scattering of thermal neutrons. It is possible to obtain an analytical solution for the wave function at a sufficiently large distance from the origin. Using our model, we estimate this distance for the Fermi pseudo-potential. This serves as a criterion for discussing the adequacy of replacing the true potential with the Fermi pseudo-potential. A network approach to the numerical problem is shown to have some advantages over a purely numerical one.

The structure factor for liquid lead at the temperatures 613 K, 643 K, 863 K and 1163 K are measured by neutron diffraction. Extensive comparisons to earlier measurements are made as well as comparisons to different hard-core models.

The K-shell ionisation of atoms by fast alpha particles is investigated using the Moller relativistic modification of the Born approximation. The incident and scattered alpha particles were described by relativistic plane waves. The Darwin approximation was used for the description of the K-shell atomic electrons and the ejected electron. The total cross sections were calculated as functions of alpha -particle impact energy for Sn, Ag, Au, Pb and compared with the available experimental data and calculations. The results obtained are in good accordance with the experimental data of Dost et al (1981). The influence of spin change of the K-shell electron on the total cross section was also studied. The results show that the collisions involving spin change of the atomic electron could be significant at higher energies of the incident alpha particles, especially for atoms with greater nuclear charge Z.

Cancer of the uterine cervix, following breast cancer, is the second leading cause of death among gynecological cancers in the developed world. Traditionally, surgical management of early-stage cervical carcinoma is considered as a “sterilizing” procedure, since the uterus is removed. Nowadays, because of the postponement of childbearing to an older age, women younger than 45 years old who are diagnosed with early-stage cervical cancer have a strong desire to preserve fertility. Radical trachelectomy (vaginal or abdominal route) is used for fertility preservation in cases of early-stage (International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics Stages IA–IB1) cervical carcinomas with remarkable oncological and obstetrical outcomes. However, less radical approaches for ideal candidates may prove safe when fertility preservation is probably feasible.
