The performance of superconducting microwave circuits is strongly influenced by the material properties of the superconducting film and substrate. While progress has been made in understanding the importance of surface preparation and the effect of surface oxides, the complex effect of superconductor film structure on microwave losses is not yet fully understood. In this study, we investigate the microwave properties of niobium resonators with different crystalline properties and related surface topographies. We analyze a series of magnetron sputtered films in which the Nb crystal orientation and surface topography are changed by varying the substrate temperatures between room temperature and 975 K. The lowest-loss resonators that we measure have quality factors of over one million at single-photon powers, among the best ever recorded using the Nb on sapphire platform. We observe the highest quality factors in films grown at an intermediate temperature regime of the growth series (550 K) where the films display both preferential ordering of the crystal domains and low surface roughness. Furthermore, we analyze the temperature-dependent behavior of our resonators to learn about how the quasiparticle density in the Nb film is affected by the niobium crystal structure and the presence of grain boundaries. Our results stress the connection between the crystal structure of superconducting films and the loss mechanisms suffered by the resonators and demonstrate that even a moderate change in temperature during thin film deposition can significantly affect the resulting quality factors.

The ghost fluid method allows a propagating interface to remain sharp during a numerical simulation. The solution of the Riemann problem at the interface provides proper information to determine interfacial fluxes as well as the velocity of the phase boundary. Then considering two-material problems, the initial states of the Riemann problem belong to different fluids, which may have different equations of states. In the inviscid case, the solution of the multi-fluid Riemann problem is an extension of the classical Riemann problem for a single fluid. The jump of the initial states between different fluids generates waves in both fluids and induces a movement of the interface, similar to a contact discontinuity. More subtle is the extension to viscous and heat conduction terms which is the main focus of this paper. We account for the discontinuous coefficients of viscosity and heat conduction at the multi-fluid interface and derive solutions of the Riemann problem for these parabolic terms, from which we can derive parabolic, interfacial fluxes.

Nuclear spin hyperpolarization techniques, such as dynamic nuclear polarization (DNP) and parahydrogen-induced polarization (PHIP), have revolutionized nuclear magnetic resonance and magnetic resonance imaging. In these methods, a readily available source of high spin order, either electron spins in DNP or singlet states in hydrogen for PHIP, is brought into close proximity with nuclear spin targets, enabling efficient transfer of spin order under external quantum control. Despite vast disparities in energy scales and interaction mechanisms between electron spins in DNP and nuclear singlet states in PHIP, a pseudo-spin formalism allows us to establish an intriguing equivalence. As a result, the important low-field polarization transfer regime of PHIP can be mapped onto an analogous system equivalent to pulsed-DNP. This establishes a correspondence between key polarization transfer sequences in PHIP and DNP, facilitating the transfer of sequence development concepts. Controlling the temperature distribution inside catalytic fixed bed reactors is crucial for yield optimization and process stability. Yet, in situ temperature measurements with spatial and temporal resolution are still challenging. In this work, we perform temperature measurements in a cylindrical fixed bed reactor by combining the capabilities of real-time magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) with the temperature-dependent proton resonance frequency (PRF) shift of water. Three-dimensional (3D) temperature maps are acquired while heating the bed from room temperature to 60~$^{\circ}$C using hot air. The obtained results show a clear temperature gradient along the axial and radial dimensions and agree with optical temperature probe measurements with an average error of $\pm$ 1.5~$^{\circ}$C. We believe that the MR thermometry methodology presented here opens new perspectives for the fundamental study of mass and heat transfer in gas-solid fixed beds and in the future might be extended to the study of reactive gas-solid systems.

Fingering instabilities akin to the Rayleigh-Taylor (RT) instability in fluids have been observed in a binary granular system consisting of dense and small particles layered on top of lighter and larger particles, when the system is subjected to vertical vibration and fluidizing gas flow. Using observations from experiments and numerical modelling we explore whether the theory developed to describe the Rayleigh-Taylor (RT) instability in fluids is also applicable to binary granular systems. Our results confirm the applicability of the classic RT instability theory for binary granular systems demonstrating that several key features are observed in both types of systems, viz: (i) The characteristic wavenumber of the instability is constant with time, (ii) the amplitude of the characteristic wavenumber initially grows exponentially and (iii) the dispersion relation between the wavenumbers k of the interface instability and the growth rates n(k) of their amplitudes holds in both fluid-fluid and binary granular systems. Our results also demonstrate that inter-particle friction is essential for the RT instability to occur in granular media. For zero particle friction the interface instability bears a greater resembles to the Richtmyer-Meshkov instability. We further define a yield criterion Y for the interface by treating the granular medium as a viscoplastic material; only for Y > 15 fingering occurs. Magnetic resonance imaging of $^{13}$C-labeled metabolites enhanced by parahydrogen-induced polarization (PHIP) can enable real-time monitoring of processes within the body. We introduce a robust, easily implementable technique for transferring parahydrogen-derived singlet order into 13C magnetization using adiabatic radio-frequency sweeps at $\mu$T fields. We experimentally demonstrate the applicability of this technique to several molecules, including some molecules relevant for metabolic imaging, where we show significant improvements in the achievable polarization, in some cases reaching above 60%. Furthermore, we introduce a site-selective deuteration scheme, where deuterium is included in the coupling network of a pyruvate ester to enhance the efficiency of the polarization transfer. These improvements are enabled by the fact that the transfer protocol avoids relaxation induced by strongly coupled quadrupolar nuclei.

Hyperpolarization of nuclear spins enhances nuclear magnetic resonance signals, which play a key role for imaging and spectroscopy in the natural and life sciences. This signal amplification unlocks previously inaccessible techniques, such as metabolic imaging of cancer cells. In this work, electron spins from the photoexcited triplet state of pentacene-doped naphthalene crystals are used to polarize surrounding protons. As existing strategies are rendered less effective by experimental constraints, they are replaced with optimal control pulses designed with RedCRAB. In contrast to previous optimal control approaches, which consider an average single nucleus, this closed-loop optimization is macroscopic. A 28% improvement in signal and 15% faster polarization rate is observed. Additionally, a strategy called Autonomously-optimized Repeated Linear Sweep (ARISE) is introduced to efficiently tailor existing hyperpolarization sequences in the presence of experimental uncertainty to enhance their performance. Particle image velocimetry has been applied to measure particle velocities on the free surface of a bed of particles within a rotating cylinder during avalanching. The particle velocities were used to examine the validity of existing avalanche models and to propose an alternative model. The movement of particles depends on their location on the surface of the bed: particles located near the center of the bed travel the farthest, while the distance travelled decreases at an increasing rate for particles located farther from the center. The start of an avalanche can be determined to a single initiation point, that can also be located on the bottom half of the bed; the avalanche quickly propagates through the entire free surface, with 90% of the surface in motion within 257 ms. The experimental insight is used to formulate a new geometric model, in which three equal sized sections flow down the bed during an avalanche. The predictions of the model are confirmed by experimental mixing measurements.

Recently, the existence of so-called granular bubbles and droplets has been demonstrated experimentally. Granular bubbles and droplets are clusters of particles that respectively rise and sink if submerged in an aerated and vibrated bed of another granular material of different size and/or density. However, currently there is no model that explains the coherent motion of these clusters and predicts the transition between a rising and sinking motion. Here, we propose an analytical model predicting accurately the neutral buoyancy limit of a granular bubble/droplet. This model allows the compilation of a regime map identifying five distinct regimes of granular bubble/droplet motion.

Nuclear spin hyperpolarization provides a promising route to overcome the challenges imposed by the limited sensitivity of nuclear magnetic resonance. Here we demonstrate that dissolution of spin-polarized pentacene-doped naphthalene crystals enables transfer of polarization to target molecules via intermolecular cross relaxation at room temperature and moderate magnetic fields (1.45$\,$T). This makes it possible to exploit the high spin polarization of optically polarized crystals while mitigating the challenges of its transfer to external nuclei, particularly of the large distances and prohibitively weak coupling between source and target nuclei across solid-solid or solid-liquid interfaces. With this method, here we inject the highly polarized mixture into a benchtop NMR spectrometer and observe the polarization dynamics for target $^1$H nuclei. Although the spectra are radiation damped due to the high naphthalene magnetization, we describe a procedure to process the data in order to obtain more conventional NMR spectra, and extract the target nuclei polarization. With the entire process occurring on a timescale of one minute, we observe NMR signals enhanced by factors between -200 and -1730 at 1.45$\,$T for a range of small molecules., Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures
