We provide a composite counter story based on our own experiences grappling with investigating elementary Latinx learners' experiences and how we have leaned on each other to resist the whiteness of learning to do research in pursuit of a Ph.D. As the counterstory shows, we collectively worked together to write our own continuations of the story between Rodrigo, a graduate research assistant on a project about Latinx learners' experiences, and Luz, a 4th grade Latina learner who is participating in the study. Together, we supported each other to use storytelling to challenge dominant narratives of the relationship between researcher and researched. Our hope is that this counterstory helps others to reflect on and explore issues of assimilation and provides them permission to challenge how we do research.

Introducción: La artritis reumatoide (AR) es una enfermedad inflamatoria crónica, autoinmune, caracterizada por poliartritis crónica, aditiva, simétrica, que puede cursar con manifestaciones extraarticulares (MExA) asociadas a una mayor morbimortalidad. Objetivo: de describir las MExA más frecuentes en AR. Métodos: se realizó un estudio descriptivo, transversal y retrospectivo de revisión de historias clínicas de pacientes diagnosticados con AR, durante el periodo diciembre 2011-enero 2022. Resultados: Participaron 150 pacientes con AR, con una edad promedio de 53,7±12,5 años, el sexo predominante fue el femenino con 84,6%, el tiempo de evolución de la AR fue de 7,2±8,9 años; en cuanto a las características serológicas, 91,1% tenía Factor reumatoideo positivo y 76,9% tenía anticuerpos contra péptidos cíclicos citrulinados positivo. Tanto al ingreso, como en la última consulta los pacientes presentaron alguna manifestación extraarticular (MExA), 61,3% y 70%, respectivamente, siendo las más frecuentes la anemia de los trastornos crónicos (al ingreso 44,6% y en última consulta 50,6%), seguida de nódulos reumatoideos (al ingreso con 8% y en la última consulta 9,3%). Conclusiones: Las MExA se presentaron en 70% de los pacientes, siendo las más frecuentes la anemia y los nódulos reumatoideos. Estos datos muestras los cambios que han tenido la frecuencia de estas MExA en esta enfermedad a través del tiempo.

En el presente artículo se analiza el procedimiento mediante el cual, en el siglo XIX, los ciudadanos ladinos en la ciudad que hoy conocemos como San Cristóbal de Las Casas (Chiapas, México) pudieron sortear los impedimentos que estorbaban enlaces matrimoniales de ciertos tipos. Para lograrlo, se da cuenta de los elementos que definieron el matrimonio a lo largo de distintas épocas y lugares, y que finalmente terminaron por normar las relaciones sociales en esta ciudad. En la exposición de los casos se puede observar que, más allá del cumplimiento de la norma, las personas involucradas ponderaron sus intereses y adaptaron el derecho de acuerdo con sus propias necesidades.

Se reseñan las principales contribuciones científicas de Ernesto Jáuregui (1923-2014) a las ciencias atmosféricas de México en cuatro líneas de investigación: climatología sinóptica y de mesoescala, climatología de la contaminación atmosférica y climatología y bioclimatología de las ciudades. En las dos últimas líneas sus aportaciones fueron mayores con publicaciones que van de 1970 a inicios del siglo XXI. Su trabajo partió, principalmente, de datos meteorológicos o climáticos medidos, es decir, sin recurrir a modelos de simulación, y no incursionó en el fenómeno de la isla urbana de calor superficial o subsuperficial. Sus investigaciones en climatología urbana se centraron en la Ciudad de México, pero abarcó algunas otras ciudades, como Toluca, Mexicali o Guadalajara, y abrió el camino al auge de la climatología urbana en las dos primeras décadas de este siglo, que incluye ciudades distribuidas por todo el territorio del país.

Thunderstorms are known to have the potential to cause damage to the population. In Mexico, these weather events can bring threats such as lightning, hail, damaging winds, and even tornadoes. Various parameters and indices have been developed for mid-latitude regions to improve forecasting and reduce the potential damage from thunderstorms; however, they do not consider the specific conditions of tropical and subtropical environments. This research used a comprehensive set of thunderstorm reports and the proximity-sounding approach using ERA5 reanalysis data to examine five important instability indices commonly used for thunderstorm forecasting regarding their spatial and temporal characteristics. The results reveal significant variations in the values of the instability indices during thunderstorm events associated with different atmospheric systems in both the high-activity and low-activity seasons. The above suggests that no single index can reliably predict thunderstorms throughout Mexico and during all seasons. Analyses provide forecasters with a more comprehensive understanding of the various atmospheric conditions under which thunderstorms develop in the country, which can lead to more accurate forecasting and better disaster risk management for these natural phenomena.

Abstract Biosafety of engineered bacteria as living therapeutics requires a tight regulation to control the specific delivery of protein effectors, maintaining minimum leakiness in the uninduced (OFF) state and efficient expression in the induced (ON) state. Here, we report a three repressors (3R) genetic circuit that tightly regulates the expression of multiple tac promoters (Ptac) integrated in the chromosome of E. coli and drives the expression of a complex type III secretion system injectisome for therapeutic protein delivery. The 3R genetic switch is based on the tetracycline repressor (TetR), the non‐inducible lambda repressor cI (ind‐) and a mutant lac repressor (LacIW220F) with higher activity. The 3R switch was optimized with different protein translation and degradation signals that control the levels of LacIW220F. We demonstrate the ability of an optimized switch to fully repress the strong leakiness of the Ptac promoters in the OFF state while triggering their efficient activation in the ON state with anhydrotetracycline (aTc), an inducer suitable for in vivo use. The implementation of the optimized 3R switch in the engineered synthetic injector E. coli (SIEC) strain boosts expression of injectisomes upon aTc induction, while maintaining a silent OFF state that preserves normal growth in the absence of the inducer. Since Ptac is a commonly used promoter, the 3R switch may have multiple applications for tight control of protein expression in E. coli. In addition, the modularity of the 3R switch may enable its tuning for the control of Ptac promoters with different inducers.

The modulation of inflammation is pivotal for uterine homeostasis. Here we evaluated the effect of the oestrus cycle on the expression of pro-inflammatory and anti-inflammatory markers in a cellular model of induced fibrosis. Mare endometrial stromal cells isolated from follicular or mid-luteal phase were primed with 10 ng/mL of TGFβ alone or in combination with either IL1β, IL6, or TNFα (10 ng/mL each) or all together for 24 h. Control cells were not primed. Messenger and miRNA expression were analyzed using real-time quantitative PCR (RT-qPCR). En este trabajo se presentan los resultados parciales de dos investigaciones sobre el crecimiento urbano metropolitano en dos ciudades mexicanas: Aguascalientes y Ciudad de México. Tiene como objetivo demostrar la relevancia del aprendizaje basado en la experiencia desde la aproximación analítica al proceso de urbanización periférica. Se aborda a partir de dos categorías analíticas, la confusión territorial y la configuración asimétrica del territorio, las cuales se proponen como herramientas teórico-metodológicas que tratan de comprender la complejidad del fenómeno urbano periférico, destacando la importancia de problemáticas como la apropiación capitalista, irregularidad, especulación inmobiliaria y la expansión urbana desigual promovida por distintos agentes sociales impulsados por el Estado en detrimento de sus habitantes. Al final, y con base en estas dos categorías, se exponen algunas consideraciones para el análisis de la urbanización periférica en las ciudades mexicanas.

A casi un siglo del primer recorrido en vehículo para detectar efectos de la urbanización en el clima local (Viena, Austria, 1927; Karlsruhe, Alemania, 1929) el método sigue vigente como lo evidencian investigaciones recientes. El presente trabajo recupera datos de temperatura atmosférica de dos campañas de mediciones mediante trayectos vehiculares en el oriente de México: de junio a septiembre de 2012 en una ciudad costera (Coatzacoalcos, 320 000 habitantes) y de agosto a noviembre de 2018 en un asentamiento montañoso (Emiliano Zapata, 20 000 habitantes). En ambas campañas se detectó la presencia de la isla de calor urbana, cuya intensidad resultó dependiente del tipo de superficie y de los sistemas de circulación atmosférica predominantes al momento de las mediciones. La intensidad máxima de la isla de calor urbana diurna en el sitio costero es de 8.7 °C y de 3 °C en el periodo nocturno, mientras que en el sitio montañoso fue de hasta 1.9 °C. También se mostró que la intensidad de ambas islas de calor urbana excede a lo estimado estadísticamente para ciudades de Latinoamérica en función de la población.

Our research collective explores Latine learner’s experiences with mathematics. Therefore, we must consider possible methods to de-settle the white gaze surveilling and erasing Latine learners in K-12 schools, as well as the white ideologies in educational research. In this book review, we discuss KiMi Wilson’s Black Boys’ Lived and Everyday Experiences in STEM (2021) and explore his use of ethnographic research to tell the story of his boys (Carter, Malik, Darius, and Thomas). Wilson highlights how he disrupts the norms of educational ethnography through his research and posits the need to amplify Black voices and experiences in STEM education. He challenges the reader to push against white ideologies and reconsider the deficit narratives surrounding Black boys. By reflecting on Wilson’s work and our own, we consider two points of reflection: Centering humanity and emotionality, and the importance of place. We explore how Wilson addresses these two points through his stories of his boys and how our research collective considers these ideas in our work with Latine learners in mathematics. As educators, educational researchers, and policy makers, we must reflect, acknowledge, and create transformative actions centered around humanity and emotionality, as well as the importance of place, to ensure equitable learning spaces for Black and Latine learners.

The analysis of paratextual elements in the artistic-literary text implies that the student establishes certain relationships that enrich his cultural heritage and literary competences; however, there are shortcomings in the didactic treatment of exerges as a paratextual element. In order to influence the solution of this problem, it is proposed to establish the exerges-chapter relationship in the novel The Flight of the Cat, by Abel Prieto. The article aims to address the relationship between the exerges and chapters in the novel The Cat's Flight, in 12mo. grade. Historical-logical analysis, analysis and synthesis, and hypothetical-deductive analysis were applied as fundamental methods. The article addresses the importance of studying the proposed relationship and enhances the understanding, analysis and production of deep contents of the novel, not only in stylistic terms, but also as an indicative substance of historical, social, cultural and ideothematic information experienced. by a group of young people in revolutionary Cuba in the 1990s.
