Abstract

The main objective of multichannel radiochromic film dosimetry methods is to correct, or at least mitigate, spatial heterogeneities in the film-scanner response, especially variations in the active layer thickness. To this end, films can also be scanned prior to irradiation. In this study, the abilities of various single channel and multichannel methods to reduce spatial heterogeneities, with and without scanning before irradiation, were tested. A new approach to multichannel dosimetry, based on experimental findings, i.e., the Multigaussian method, is introduced. The Multigaussian method assumes that the probability density function of the response vector formed by the pixel values of the different color channels, including irradiated and non-irradiated scans, follows a multivariate Gaussian distribution. The Multigaussian method provided more accurate doses than the other models under comparison, especially when incorporating the information of the film prior to irradiation.

Abstract

Purpose: When comparing different scans of the same radiochromic film, several patterns can be observed. These patterns are caused by different sources of uncertainty, which affect the repeatability of the scanner. The purpose of this work was to study these uncertainties. Methods: The variance of the scanner noise, as a function of the pixel position, was studied for different resolutions. The inter-scan variability of the scanner response was analyzed taking into account spatial discrepancies. Finally, the distance between the position of the same point in different scans was examined. Results: The variance of noise follows periodical patterns in both axes, causing the grid patterns. These patterns were identified for resolutions of 50, 72 and 96 dpi, but not for 150 dpi. Specially recognizable is the sinusoidal shape with a period of 8.5 mm that is produced with 72 dpi. Inter-scan variations of the response caused systematic relative dose deviations larger than 1% in 5% of the red channel images, 9% of the green and 51% of the blue. No systematic deviation larger than 1% was found after applying response corrections. The initial positioning and the speed of the scanner lamp vary between scans. Conclusions: Three new sources of uncertainty, which influence radiochromic film dosimetry with flatbed scanners, have been identified and analyzed in this work: grid patterns, spatial inter-scan variations and scanning reading repeatability. A novel correction method is proposed, which mitigates spatial inter-scan variations caused by deviations in the autocalibration of the individual Charge Coupled Device detectors.

Abstract

Purpose: A dosimetric system formed by Gafchromic EBT2 radiochromic film and Epson Expression 10000XL flatbed scanner was commissioned for dosimetry. In this paper, several open questions concerning the commissioning of radiochromic films for dosimetry were addressed: a) is it possible to employ this dosimetric system in reflection mode; b) if so, can the methods used in transmission mode also be used in reflection mode; c) is it possible to obtain accurate absolute dose measurements with Gafchromic EBT2 films; d) which calibration method should be followed; e) which calibration models should be used; f) does three-color channel dosimetry offer a significant improvement over single channel dosimetry. The purpose of this paper is to help clarify these questions. Conclusions: Reflection mode with Gafchromic EBT2 radiochromic film was found to be a viable alternative to transmission mode. The same methods that are used in transmission mode can be followed in reflection mode. A novel plan-based method was developed for calibration and multichannel dosimetry. This novel method offers increased robustness against film response inhomogeneities and reduces considerably the time required for calibration.

Abstract

In the last ten years, the number of people over 65 has increased 30% in Spain. This trend is anticipated to grow and require more healthcare personnel. To prevent this, people should live longer independently instead of in care homes. The ADDIM system will assist them in living independently. The research presented in this paper is part of the mood detection of the user in the ADDIM (Asistencia Domiciliaria Digital Integral para Mayores) system. This is a Digital platform for monitoring older people's health, safety, companionship, and emotional support at home based on robotics, artificial intelligence, and ambient assisted living. To detect user emotions, the right speech corpus, feature extraction methods, preprocessing methods, and machine learning models have to be selected. Based on the detected emotion, the robot will interact with the user to perform predefined actions. The final mood of the user will be estimated using this output in conjunction with visual feedback and the sensors in the user's home with the ADDIM system. Three speech corpora are selected with retraining to achieve personalized detection based on the user's previous recordings. In addition, this will ensure that the detection is improved over time, which has yet to be implemented in other research. Finally, the implementation uses dimensional emotion detection instead of discrete emotion detection. This augments the number of detectable emotions.

Contains fulltext : 287886.pdf (Publisher’s version ) (Open Access), BACKGROUND: Variants in myosin heavy chain 7 (MYH7) are responsible for disease in 1% to 5% of patients with dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM); however, the clinical characteristics and natural history of MYH7-related DCM are poorly described. OBJECTIVES: We sought to determine the phenotype and prognosis of MYH7-related DCM. We also evaluated the influence of variant location on phenotypic expression. METHODS: We studied clinical data from 147 individuals with DCM-causing MYH7 variants (47.6% female; 35.6 ± 19.2 years) recruited from 29 international centers. RESULTS: At initial evaluation, 106 (72.1%) patients had DCM (left ventricular ejection fraction: 34.5% ± 11.7%). Median follow-up was 4.5 years (IQR: 1.7-8.0 years), and 23.7% of carriers who were initially phenotype-negative developed DCM. Phenotypic expression by 40 and 60 years was 46% and 88%, respectively, with 18 patients (16%) first diagnosed at <18 years of age. Thirty-six percent of patients with DCM met imaging criteria for LV noncompaction. During follow-up, 28% showed left ventricular reverse remodeling. Incidence of adverse cardiac events among patients with DCM at 5 years was 11.6%, with 5 (4.6%) deaths caused by end-stage heart failure (ESHF) and 5 patients (4.6%) requiring heart transplantation. The major ventricular arrhythmia rate was low (1.0% and 2.1% at 5 years in patients with DCM and in those with LVEF of ≤35%, respectively). ESHF and major ventricular arrhythmia were significantly lower compared with LMNA-related DCM and similar to DCM caused by TTN truncating variants. CONCLUSIONS: MYH7-related DCM is characterized by early age of onset, high phenotypic expression, low left ventricular reverse remodeling, and frequent progression to ESHF. Heart failure complications predominate over ventricular arrhythmias, which are rare.

Amb l’objectiu de donar suport als centres en el tractament de les llengües en el context de l’actual diversitat lingüística i cultural, el Departament d’Ensenyament promou des del curs 2007-2008 el nou Projecte d’actualització de la metodologia d’Immersió Lingüística. El projecte consisteix bàsicament en facilitar a les escoles integrants els recursos formatius necessaris per assolir amb èxit aquest repte. Una de les activitats de les diverses accions formatives es complementa amb unes sessions de modelització en què formadores del Departament exemplifiquen com desenvolupar a les aules les estratègies i els continguts abordats en la formació. En aquest context el present article es proposa analitzar una de les sessions de modelització sobre l’ensenyament de coneixements al voltant de la frase al Cicle Inicial. Una anàlisi que permet destacar algunes qüestions a optimitzar en aquestes sessions. .

Abstract

Bacterial colonization in the oral cavity is critical for efficient action of probiotics. However, limited colonization rates have been reported in many clinical trials. The aim of this pilot clinical study was to evaluate the colonization efficiency of Streptococcus dentisani under different dosing schedules and pre-treatment conditions. Eleven adult volunteers enrolled in the study. A professional ultrasound cleaning was performed in quadrants 1 and 4. The probiotic was applied in all four quadrants at a total dose of 10(10) CFUs, administered in a buccoadhesive gel for 5 min, either in a single dose (n = 5) or daily for a week (n = 6). Dental plaque and saliva samples were collected at baseline and after 14 and 28 days of first application. Amounts of S. dentisani and the cariogenic organism Streptococcus mutans were measured by qPCR and salivary pH was measured by reflectometry. There was a significant increase in S. dentisani cells at day 14 but not at day 28 under both dosing schedules. A non-significant higher colonization was found in the half-mouth with previous professional cleaning as compared to the intact half. There was a significant increase in salivary pH at day 14 (p = 0.024) and day 28 (p = 0.014), which was stronger in multi-dose patients, and a significant decrease in S. mutans at day 28 (p < 0.01). The results indicate that S. dentisani is transiently able to colonize the oral cavity and that it buffers oral pH, especially after multiple dosing. Future randomized, placebo-controlled clinical trials should evaluate its use to prevent tooth decay.

Abstract

Non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) is defined as the direct and deliberate destruction of one’s own body tissue in the absence of lethal intent. Following decades of progressive increase in the incidence of NSSI among adolescents and young adults, as well as growing scientific interest, the disorder was listed as a condition for further study in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (fifth edition). In this review we provide updated information on this phenomenon, focusing on: prevalence, course and prognosis; associated factors; its relationship with psychopathology; and the role of the mass media, social networks, and the internet. Finally, we discuss some conclusions and future proposals, emphasizing the need for collaborative work to better understand NSSI in Spain, and to improve prevention and treatment strategies.
