A ascite em equídeos é rara, a ocorrência desta pode estar relacionada a distúrbios fisiológicos, como afecções hepáticas ou renais, enteropatias, dieta pobre em proteína e desequilíbrio hidroeletrolítico. O tratamento requer raciocínio clínico, exames laboratoriais e um protocolo terapêutico, uma vez que o acúmulo excessivo de líquido na cavidade abdominal, dificulta a execução dos movimentos respiratórios, podendo causar apatia, inapetência e óbito. A partir do presente estudo, objetivou-se relatar o atendimento de uma mula com 18 meses de idade, internada em uma Clínica Escola, apresentando sinais de abdômen agudo e aumento do perímetro abdominal. Após avaliação clínica do paciente e avaliação laboratorial do líquido peritoneal e fezes, concluiu-se que esta apresentava ascite, ocasionada por helmintose seguida de hipoproteinemia. O tratamento consistiu de terapia de suporte, antibiótico, anti-inflamatório, vermifugação e drenagem do líquido ascítico. Após 12 dias a mula recebeu alta. O quadro de ascite encontrado neste animal foi justificado pelos resultados dos exames, uma vez que os manejos nutricional e sanitário eram precários. O tratamento de suporte, reposição hidroeletrolítica e drenagem do líquido peritoneal excedente foram fundamentais. A ascite é possível de ser revertida, desde que a conduta clínica e protocolo terapêutico sejam específicos e de acordo com os resultados laboratoriais.

This is the first report of Babesia vogeli molecular detection in dogs from the state of Acre, northern Brazil. This study aimed to perform the molecular detection of Babesia vogeli in dogs in the municipality of Rio Branco, Acre. Blood samples were collected from 47 dogs presenting with clinical signs comparable to hemoparasitosis. These were dogs which were attended in veterinary clinics from Rio Branco municipality, Acre. Physical examinations, packed cell volume (PCV) determination, platelet number estimation, hemoparasite investigation in the blood (collected from the pinna and peripheral blood), and polymerase chain reaction (PCR) for piroplasm based on the 18S rRNA gene, were performed. One dog (1/47, 2.1%; CI 95%: 0.1-11.3%) tested positive to Babesia vogeli in the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assay for piroplasms and the resulting sequence showed 100% identity with Babesia vogeli isolates deposited in GenBank®. Co-infection with Ehrlichia spp. was also observed by direct examination (via blood smear). The clinical and hematological alterations observed in the positive animal were anorexia, dehydration, white mucous membranes, anemia and thrombocytopenia. Este é o primeiro relato de detecção molecular de Babesia vogeli em cães do estado do Acre, norte do Brasil. Este estudo teve como objetivo realizar a detecção molecular de B. vogeli em amostras de sangue de 47 cães com sinais clínicos compatíveis com hemoparasitoses no município de Rio Branco, Acre. Tratavam-se de animais atendidos em clínicas veterinárias do município, sendo realizados exames físicos, determinação do volume globular (VG), estimativa do número de plaquetas, investigação de hemoparasitos no sangue (coletado da ponta da orelha e sangue periférico). Além disso, amostras de sangue foram submetidas a extração de DNA e reação em cadeia da polimerase (PCR) para amplificação de fragmentos do gene 18S rRNA de piroplasmas. Um cão (1/47, 2,1%; IC 95%: 0,1-11,3%) apresentou resultado positivo para B. vogeli na PCR para piroplasmas e a sequência resultante mostrou 100% de identidade com os isolados de B. vogeli depositados no GenBank®. Co-infecção com Ehrlichia spp. também foi observado por exame direto (esfregaço de sangue). As alterações clínicas e hematológicas observadas no animal positivo foram anorexia, desidratação, mucosas pálidas, anemia e trombocitopenia.

A esporotricose é uma dermatomicose causada por fungos do gênero Sporothrix que pode acometer humanos e animais. O gato doméstico possui importância fundamental na cadeia epidemiológica da doença, já que é considerado uma das principais fontes de infecção para os humanos. Nos felinos infectados normalmente observam-se lesões cutâneas ulceradas, em forma de goma em região cefálica, extremidades dos membros e cauda. Em humanos normalmente a lesão é localizada, podendo haver comprometimento linfático da região. O diagnóstico da esporotricose é feito através de exame clínico minucioso, observando-se o histórico do paciente e exames complementares como o cultivo micológico e o exame citológico, no qual pode-se observar, de forma rápida, a presença do fungo. O objetivo deste trabalho foi relatar um caso de esporotricose felina com transmissão zoonótica, alertando para a ocorrência da doença em felinos e de sua transmissão a seres humanos que mantenham contato com esses animais.

O etil-cianoacrilato (ECA) que é um éster do ácido cianoacrílico de cadeia curta tem sido usado extensivamente em síntese cutânea. O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar a eficiência do ECA na síntese de excisões cutâneas de ratos Wistar machos. Foram utilizados 16 ratos da linhagem Wistar e divididos em dois grupos, cada um com oito animais. Os ratos foram premedicados com xilazina (3 mg/Kg IM) e cetamina (70 mg/Kg IM) e tricotomizados manualmente. Realizou-se a antissepsia com solução alcoolica a 70% e clorhexidina a 0,5%, seguido de colocação de panos de campo descartáveis. Foi efetuada uma incisão longitudinal de cinco centímetros no dorso de cada rato e fechadas por ECA e suturas (náilon 4-0). Os ratos foram observados nos dias 1, 2, 3, 7 e 15°. Os adesivos apresentaram os maiores níveis de deiscências. O etilcianoacrilato foi adequadamente tolerado neste estudo, sem induzir inflamação ou infecções, apresentando diversas vantagens de uso em relação à sutura, incluindo reduzido índice de complicações e facilitando a síntese das suturas.

Sarcomas are malignant mesenchymal origin neoplasms, which can develop from different tissues, such as adipose, cartilage, bone, among others. The occurrence of sarcomas in birds has been previously described, with different therapeutic approaches. The present report describes the clinical approach in a blue-fronted amazon (Amazona aestiva) diagnosed with a soft tissue sarcoma in the dorsal cervical region, with surgical excision associated with a metronomic chemotherapy protocol as an adjuvant. The therapeutic combination proved to be effective in controlling the disease, guaranteeing important survival, with clinical absence of side effects. Avaliou-se a capacidade fecundante do sêmen caprino resfriado a 5°C, por 12 (TI) ou 24 horas (TII), em container especial. Para tanto, utilizaram-se 62 fêmeas e dois reprodutores (B1 e B2) da raça Toggenburg, distribuídos em um esquema fatorial 2x2 (dois reprodutores e dois períodos de estocagem do sêmen). Após a coleta, o sêmen foi diluído em Tris-frutose-gema de ovo a 2,5%, envasado em palhetas de 0,25mL, com 150x106 espermatozoides móveis e resfriado a 5oC. As fêmeas receberam duas doses de 22,5µg de PGF2a, em intervalos de 10 dias para a sincronização do estro. A partir da primeira aplicação de PGF2a, as fêmeas foram monitoradas para ocorrência de estro, três vezes ao dia. Realizou-se uma única inseminação, pela técnica de fixação da cérvice, 12 horas após o início do estro. A motilidade e o vigor, após 12 ou 24 horas de resfriamento, foram de 66,14±0,11% e 62,50±0,05%, e 3,46±0,61 e 3,27±0,50, respectivamente. Não houve influência (P>0,05) do reprodutor, nem do período de armazenamento do sêmen sobre a taxa de concepção das cabras, que foi de 49,1%. Conception rate of goats inseminated with semen cooled in egg yolk diluent at 5 degrees C, for 12 or 24 hours. Abstract: The fertilizing capacity of goat semen cooled in egg yolk diluent at 5 degrees C, for 12 or 24 hours was evaluated. Sixty-two Toggenburg does and two sexually mature Toggenburg bucks were used in a fatorial treatment combination (two bucks and two storage periods). The semen was diluted in 2.5% Tris-frutose-egg yolk; envased in 0.25mL plastic straws, with 150x10(6) mobile spermatozoa; and cooled at 5 degrees C for 12 or 24 hours. The females received two doses of 22.5 mu g of prostaglandine F2 alpha, at each 10-day intervals in order to synchronize the estrous. From the first PGF2 alpha injection, estrous occurrence was monitored three times per day. Only one insemination was used, using the cervix fixation method, 12 hours after the estrous onset. The means of motility and strength, 12 (TI) and 24 hours (TII) after semen cooling at 5 degrees C, were 66.14 +/- 0.11% and 62.50 +/- 0.05%, and 3.46 +/- 0.61 and 3.27 +/- 0.50, respectively. Neither the sire nor the period of semen influenced (P>0.05) the conception rate of the does, which was 49.1%.

No. of bitstreams: 0 Previous issue date: 2021-12-30 This study aimed to evaluate pain relief in 20 dogs with hip dysplasia that underwent pectin tenectomy and iliopsoas muscle tenotomy, associated with lateral and ventral denervations in the left antimere in comparison with the lateral denervation in the right antimere. Muscle mass gain and gait were evaluated. Specific physical examination, such as hip abduction, rotation, and extension, and iliopsoas test were performed. In both groups, joint mobility improvement and muscle mass gain were significant 60 days post-surgery. Young dogs did not show significant difference in limb mass gain when left (3.79 cm) and right (3.6 cm) limbs were compared. By contrast, adult dogs demonstrated significant difference in mass gain between the limbs, gaining 0.55 cm in the right and 1.13 cm in the left. On physical examination and specific joint evaluation, pain relief was observed in both joints 7 days post-surgery; pain was decreasing gradually until 60 days post-surgery when the difference between the left (1.61) and the right (1.55) limbs was not significant. This finding suggests that craniolateral denervation alone is sufficient to achieve good pain relief in dogs with hip dysplasia. The animal had hyporexia, sialorrhea and increased volume in the right mandibular branch. The parameters evaluated during the clinical examination were in accordance with the normal values for the species. In the full blood count (FBC) and serum biochemistry, no changes were observed. An X-ray of the skull showed a marked bone lytic reaction and a proliferative aspect in the right mandible. Hemimandibulectomy was performed and the removed material was sent for histopathological examination, in which a squamous odontogenic tumor was diagnosed. All tumors originating from odontogenic tissues are considered benign. SOT arises from remnants of the dental lamina and occurs equally in the mandible and maxilla. It is located predominantly in the posterior region of the mandible, and more rarely in the anterior region of this tissue. This neoplasm is taken as quite rare in the human medical literature and citations of this tumor is lacking in the veterinary medicine. The proposed surgical technique was considered viable and a potential treatment option for TCC in bladder trigone, with benefits regarding the prevention of urinary tract obstruction due to neoplastic growth and local removal of the primary tumor, which may limit or delay the spread of the disease even without adjuvant chemotherapy. The main disadvantages related to the described technique are ureteral stricture, intermittent cystitis and local relapse. RESUMO Objetivou-se com o presente trabalho caracterizar o processo de compostagem de fluxo contínuo e aeração passiva de resíduos da produção e abate da caprino-ovinocultura e de seu composto orgânico gerado. O processo de compostagem utilizou resíduos sólidos provenientes da produção e do abate de caprinos e ovinos e foi realizado em galpão de alvenaria. Os resíduos agropecuários utilizados incluíram sobras de capim-elefante triturado seco, poda de árvores, esterco e carcaça de caprinos e ovinos. Os tratamentos empregados foram três níveis de umidade aplicados nas leiras de compostagem (30, 50 e 70% com base no peso da carcaça dos animais) e épocas do ano de montagem (período seco, transição e úmido) com base na precipitação, com três repetições. As variáveis avaliadas foram atributos químicos, físicos, microbiológicos e parasitológicos do composto e sua comparação com a legislação vigente. O composto orgânico gerado atende as especificações das legislações utilizadas para comparação. Independentemente da época do ano ou da umidade aplicada, o processo de compostagem foi eficiente em reduzir passivos ambientais, como carcaças. A compostagem promoveu a eliminação dos patógenos avaliados, indicando que o composto não oferece risco de transmissão e pode ser utilizado de forma segura. ABSTRACT The objective of this study to characterize the process of continuous flow of composting and passive aeration of waste production and slaughter the goat and sheep industry and its generated organic compound. The composting process, performed in a brick barn, used solid residues (manure and carcass parts) from the slaughter of goats and sheep along with chopped dry elephant grass and tree trimmings. The treatments employed three moisture levels in the piles and four collections of samples from the piles at timed intervals (0, 30, 60 and 120 days), with three repetitions. The variables evaluated were the chemical and physical attributes of the compost generated. The treatments were three moisture levels applied in compost piles (30, 50 and 70% based on the housing of animals) and assembly times of the year (dry, transitional and humid) based on rainfall, with three replications. The variables were chemical, physical, microbiological and parasitological of the compound and its comparison with current legislation. The generated organic compound meets the specifications of the laws used for comparison. Regardless of the time of year or moisture applied, the composting process was effective in reducing environmental liabilities as carcasses. Composting promoted elimination of this pathogen, indicating that the compound can be used safely.

RESUMO: O presente estudo avaliou a hepatotoxicidade induzida pelo CCl4 durante o efeito glicocorticoide da dexametasona (DEX) na fisiopatologia da reação inflamatória aguda em tilápias do Nilo, Oreochromis niloticus, correlacionando a funcionalidade hepática à cinética de acúmulo celular em aerocistite infecciosa. Para tal, utilizou-se 84 tilápias do Nilo distribuídas em 4 tratamentos: controle, CCl4, DEX e CCl4+DEX. Sendo amostrados 7 animais por tratamento em três períodos, isto é: seis, 24 e 48h após indução de inflamação. Utilizou-se CCl4 em dose única de 0,5mL/kg, via intraperitoneal para causar o transtorno hepático. Para indução da aerocistite utilizou-se inóculo de Aeromonas hydrophila. A dexametasona foi administrada via intramuscular na dose de 2 mg/kg de peso vivo. Os resultados revelaram que quanto maior foi à atividade sérica de aspartato aminotransferase (AST) maior foi a alteração somática do fígado, sendo estes achados inversamente proporcionais ao acúmulo celular no foco inflamatório, demonstrando menor número de células inflamatórias nos animais acometidos com maior grau de distúrbios hepáticos induzidos pelo CCl4. O estudo histopatológico revelou alterações degenerativas transitórias na fase mais aguda, pois os fígados das tilápias revelaram o acúmulo lipídeos nos hepatócitos 6h após administração de CCl4, sendo esta degeneração gordurosa não mais observada nos tempos de 24 e 48h. Contudo, a administração de CCl4 em tilápias do Nilo resultou em degeneração hepática aguda e transitória, caracterizada pelo acúmulo de gordura nos hepatócitos, aumento de AST no sangue e hepatomegalia. Com a disfunção hepática houve comprometimento do recrutamento celular em aerocistite infecciosa, indicando que há participação do fígado na resposta imune inata em peixes. ABSTRACT: The study evaluated the hepatotoxicity induced by CCl4 during the glucocorticoid effect of dexamethasone (DEX) on the pathophysiology of the acute inflammatory reaction in Nile tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus, correlating hepatic functionality with cellular accumulation kinetics in infectious aerocystitis. Eighty- four Nile tilapia were distributed into four treatments: control, CCl4, DEX and CCl4 + DEX. Seven tilapia were sampled per treatment in three periods: 6, 24 and 48h after induction of inflammation. CCl4 was used in a single dose of 0.5mL/kg intraperitoneally to cause hepatic disorder. Aeromonas hydrophila inoculum was used to induce aerocystitis. Dexamethasone was administered intramuscularly at the dose of 2mg/kg b. w. The results revealed a higher serum aspartate transaminase (AST) activity associated with greater somatic liver alteration, being these findings inversely proportional to the cellular accumulation in the inflammatory focus, demonstrating a lower number of inflammatory cells in the animals affected with a higher degree of hepatic disorders induced by CCl4. The histopathological study revealed transient degenerative changes in the most acute phase, as livers of tilapia showed accumulation of lipids in hepatocytes 6 hours after administration of CCl4, and this fatty degeneration was no longer observed in 24 and 48h. However, administration of CCl4 in Nile tilapia resulted in acute and transient liver degeneration, characterized by accumulation of fat in hepatocytes, increased AST in the blood and hepatomegaly. With liver dysfunction there was compromise of cellular recruitment in infectious aerocystitis, indicating that there is liver involvement in the innate immune response in tilapia.

In stillborn animals, the involvement of the liver in the omphalocele has been reported. The aim of the present study is to report the success of a partial liver resection in a female bovine at two days of age which presented an omphalocele at birth. Surgical intervention was indicated to reduce and suture the abdominal wall. During the surgical procedure, the presence of hard, reddish tissue was noted inside the sac covered by the amniotic membrane, with characteristics consistent with hepatic parenchyma. Due to the impossibility of reducing the contents added to the suggestion of tissue infection, we elected to perform a partial resection. The histopathological examination confirmed that the resected tissue was of the hepatic parenchyma. Antibiotic and systemic anti-inflammatory therapies were performed post-surgery. Fifteen days after surgery, infection was detected at the surgical site in addition to abdominal wound dehiscence; surgical reintervention was performed. On physical examination, carried out 4 months after the second operation, the heifer presented normal development for the species. In conclusion, omphalocele may contain liver. Ectopic liver is an extremely rare condition. Surgical treatment in the presented case focused on umbilicus with exploration of the abdominal cavity appeared to be sufficient. Com o objetivo de elucidar a composição anatômica do plexo braquial, estudaram-se três exemplares machos provenientes de Paragominas-PA, doados após morte por atropelamento ao Laboratório de Pesquisa Morfológica Animal (LaPMA), da Universidade Federal Rural da Amazônia (UFRA). Os animais foram fixados em solução aquosa de formol 10% para posterior realização da dissecação bilateral da origem do plexo braquial. O plexo braquial do C. thous é derivado dos três últimos nervos espinhais cervicais e do primeiro nervo torácico (C6-T1). Os principais nervos que o compõem, com suas respectivas origens foram: n. supraescapular, n. subscapular e n. musculocutâneo (C6-C7), n. axilar (C7-C8), n. radial (C7-T1 e C7-C8), n. mediano, n. ulnar, n. toracodorsal e n. torácico lateral (C8-T1). Concluímos que o plexo braquial do C. thous assemelha-se ao descrito para os cães domésticos, apresentando pequenas diferenças quanto à composição de alguns nervos. The Cerdocyon thous is a canid that has a wide distribution in South America and, besides some general aspects, its morphology is little known in the literature, especially regarding the nervous system. With the aim of elucidating the anatomical composition of brachial plexus, we studied three male specimens from Paragominas-PA, donated to the Morphological Laboratory of Animal Research (LaPMA), Federal Rural University of Amazonia (UFRA), after death by trampling. The animals were fixed in an aqueous solution of 10% formaldehyde for bilateral dissection of the origin of the brachial plexus. The brachial plexus of C. thous is derived from the last three cervical nerves and the first thoracic nerve (C6-T1). The main nerves that compose it, with their respective origins were the suprascapular nerve, subscapular nerve and musculocutaneous nerve (C6-C7), axillary nerve (C7-C8), radial nerve (C7-T1 and C7-C8), median nerve, ulnar nerve, thoracodorsal and thoracic lateral nerve (C8-T1). We conclude that the brachial plexus of C. thous is similar to that described for the domestic dogs, showing small differences in the composition of some nerves. These neoplasias affect dogs with age between 11 and 13 years old. The aim of this work was to report the surgical treatment, with no association to any adjuvant treatment, of non functional thyroid papillary cist adenoma with 8 cm in length and 6 cm in width, in a dog, Labrador breed, with four years old, attended at the Veterinary Hospital School, Mozambique. The complementary exams as image (X-ray and ultrasound), complete blood count, serum biochemistry, hormonal dosage and fine-needle aspiration (FNA), were not conclusive for the diagnosis. However, the histopathology exam was crucial for the definitive diagnosis, and the treatment by complete surgical resection, without association with chemotherapy, was effective in this case. No. of bitstreams: 0 Previous issue date: 2013-09-03 The repair process induced corneal ulcer in rabbits using platelet-rich plasma in the form of eyedrop or clot was clinically evaluated and compared. Sixty rabbits were divided into four groups of 15 animals, denominated platelet group (PG), clot group (CLG), control group (CG), and amniotic control group (AG). Experimental groups were then subdivided into three groups (M4, M7, M30), corresponding to the end of the evaluation period. There were no differences between treatments regarding ocular sensitivity, chemosis and ocular secretion. The groups treated with PRP either as eyedrop or a clot showed less opacity than the animals treated only with amniotic membrane at the moment of the final evaluation. The presence of corneal ulcers in the groups treated with PRP showed lower intensity than the other groups. Histomorphometric examination showed that corneal epithelization in the initial phase of the lesion was greater when using PRP. The use of amniotic membrane promoted corneal epithelial and stromal thickness, as well as synergism when associated to PRP. Realizou-se um estudo retrospectivo em 210 cães acometidos por neoplasias, atendidos no Hospital Veterinário (HV) da Universidade Eduardo Mondlane, Moçambique, no período de janeiro de 2004 a janeiro de 2009. Foram utilizados dados das fichas clínico-cirúrgicas, referentes às amostras de neoplasias removidas cirurgicamente, achados de exames necroscópicos e citológicos, os quais, posteriormente, foram enviados para o diagnóstico histopatológico. As neoplasias foram correlacionadas com o sexo, a idade e a raça. Foram identificadas 210 neoplasias durante o período de estudo, e dos 27 tipos diferentes as que se destacaram foram as de pele (61,0%), seguidas das neoplasias de glândula mamária (27,60%), do sistema reprodutor (11,90%) e do sistema musculoesquelético (11,0%). As neoplasias de glândula mamária foram identificadas somente em cadelas, observando-se maior prevalência em cadelas não castradas ou castradas após os dois anos de idade. Concluiu-se que o aumento da prevalência das neoplasias estava correlacionado com a maior longevidade dos cães, e a raça, também, predispôs ao desenvolvimento de determinados tumores, haja vista a alta incidência de mastocitomas grau II em cães das raças Boxer e Pastor Alemão. A incidência de 100% das neoplasias de glândula mamária em fêmeas confirmou a maior predisposição das fêmeas no desenvolvimento desse tipo de neoplasia. A retrospective study of tumors in dogs was carried out in the School Veterinary Hospital (HVE), Eduardo Mondlane University, Mozambique, between January 2004 and January 2009. Data from clinical-surgical records of tumor samples surgically removed, necropsy and cytological exams were used and sent for histopathology exams. During the study 210 tumors and about 27 different types of tumors were identified. Skin tumors (61.0%) were the most frequent, followed by mammary gland tumors (27.60%), reproductive system tumors (11.90%) and bone system tumors. The mammary gland tumors were observed only in females, with high prevalence in bitches which were not spayed or spayed after two years old. It was concluded that the neoplasia prevalence increase was correlated to the higher longevity of dogs, and breed also contributed for the development of determined tumors due to high incidence of mastocitomas in Boxer and German Shepherd breeds. The 100 % incidence of mammary gland neoplasia in females confirmed the higher predisposition for mammary gland neoplasia in females.

As imagens obtidas por essa metodologia foram correlacionadas com as técnicas radiográficas convencionais (extraorais), com o intuito de se estabelecerem vantagens ou desvantagens para detectar possíveis afecções dentais e periodontais. Foram utilizados 30 gatos, sem raça definida, 17 machos e 13 fêmeas, faixa etária entre um e três anos, confinados em gatis do Departamento de Zootecnia da Universidade Federal de Lavras (UFLA)/MG. Com os animais sob anestesia geral, foram realizadas radiografias da hemiarcada superior direita, incluindo três incisivos, um canino, três pré-molares e um molar em radiografias intraorais e extraorais. No. of bitstreams: 0 Previous issue date: 2012-12-01 The aim of the present study was to perform a leishmaniasis survey in horses from Araçatuba, São Paulo, an endemic area of Brazil. Of the 466 horses tested for the presence of anti-Leishmania chagasi titers by ELISA, 68 (14.59%) were seropositive, with titers varying between 0.324 and 0.813. ELISA positive samples were also tested by immunocromatography and 19/466 (4.08%) were positive. The results of the present study indicated that equines are in contact and can attract phlebotomines, and highlight the necessity of a more accurate investigation on the role played by the horses living in endemic areas, in order to help to control the spread of the illness. No. of bitstreams: 0 Previous issue date: 2012-12-01 The updating of the of the prolapse of the third eyelid gland treatment in the literature is pertinent, due to the different surgical techniques for his resolution, with advantages and disadvantages. The work aimed to report the Moore technique in surgical treatment of the bilateral prolapse of the third eyelid gland in a female dog with bilateral entropion, six months, Shar-Pei breed, attended in the Veterinary Hospital School, Mozambique. The Moore technique showed good results and if the bilateral entropion was not a spastic type, was able to do the both surgeries in same day. The surgery using the Moore technique continues easy to learn, more simple to do and does not affect the third eyelid mobility. Some serological studies have shown the involvement of wild species in the epidemiology of the disease. Once captive wild animals are not much studied, especially in Brazil, the present study aimed to detect anti- Leptospira spp. antibodies in animals from Ribeirão Preto city zoo, in São Paulo state, Brazil. Blood samples were collected from captive birds, fish, reptiles and mammals, sinanthropics and free-living animals and also from employees between March and October, 2006. Four hundred and three blood samples were obtained, 388 animals' samples (110 reptiles, 143 birds, 110 mammals and 25 fish) and 15 humans'. The sera were analysed by Microscopic Agglutination Test using 22 serovars from pathological leptospiras and two from non-pathological serovars. Among the animal samples, 339 were from captive animals, and 49 from free-living ones, captured with traps inside the zoo. One hundred and three (103/388 = 26.5%) samples reacted to leptospirosis, ninety-two (92/339 = 27.1%) samples were from captive animals and eleven (11/49 = 22.4%) from free-living ones. All humans' samples were negative. Serological titles varied from 40 to 5.120, with predominance of titles between 40 and 80 and the most frequent serovars were Patoc, Andamana, Canicola, Icterohaemorrhagiae and Panama. No. of bitstreams: 0 Previous issue date: 2009-01-01 Canine papillomatosis is an infectious viral disease characterized by oral, cutaneous or ocular papillomas, usually benign. The treatment is indicated in animals, with multiple tumors that produce pharyngeal obstruction, and problems of eating or for aesthetic reasons. Different treatment protocols have been proposed, including surgical excision, cryosurgery, electro surgery, autogenous or recombinant vaccines, imunomodulators drugs, systemic and intralesional chemotherapy. In this study were reviewed the more important aspects of canine oral papillomatosis. In the 12 studied animals, the papillomas were observed predominantly in mouth, gum and palate regions, in puppies until 12 months, presenting combined infection with ehrlichiosis. The treatment using Propionibacterium acnes and/or autogenous vaccine showed efficacy in eight dogs (66.7%). No. of bitstreams: 0 Previous issue date: 2006-12-01 To know the origin of the ischiatic nerve in mocos (Kerodon rupestris Wied,1820) near by intervertebral forames and the muscling belonging to its routes were used 10 adult animals, from CEMAS-ESAM. After natural obit, they were fixed in formol (10%) and dissected to exposition and to singt of the ischiatic nerve. The results were indicated in percentage. Variations in the quantity of the lumber and sacral vertebras nere observed, five animals (50,00%) reveled seven lumbar vertebras and three sacral ones; two animals recrealed seven lumbar vertebras and four sacral ones, and two animals reveled six lumbar vertebras and three sacral ones. An animal (10,00%) revealed six lumbar vertebras and four ones. Therefore, the origin of the nerve was differentiated five animals (50,00%) had the participation of L 7,S 1,S 2; two animals (20,00%) with L 7,S 1; and a little part of S 2. Two animals (20,00%) with L 6,S 1,S 2, and an animal (10,00%) with L 6,S 1, and a little part of S 2. The last root of the ischiatic nerve in all its origins, contribute to the constitution of the first root of pudental nerve. It was verified that in all its route, the ischiatic nerves (100,00%) ceded branches to the muscles: medial gluteus, deep gluteus, superficial gluteus, emiting muscular branches to the femoral biceps or to thigh, and to the semimembranous and semi-tendinous muscles, that is continuous with a high calibre trunk, originating the fibular nerve(sideways), the tibial nerve(medial) and the lateral plantar sural cutaneous nerve (caudal). Few studies have investigated the etiological complexity of this disease, as well as multidrug resistance of isolates. In this study, 60 horses with arthritis had synovial fluid samples aseptically collected, and tested by microbiological culture and in vitro susceptibility test (disk diffusion) using nine antimicrobials belonging to six different pharmacological groups. Bacteria were isolated in 45 (75.0%) samples, as follows: Streptococcus equi subsp. equi (11=18.3%), Escherichia coli (9=15.0%), Staphylococcus aureus (6=10.0%), Streptococcus equi subsp. zooepidemicus (5=8.3%), Staphylococcus intermedius (2=3.3%), Proteus vulgaris (2=3.3%), Trueperella pyogenes (2=3.3%), Pseudomonas aeruginosa (2=3.3%), Klebsiella pneumoniae (1=1.7%), Rhodococcus equi (1=1.7%), Staphylococcus epidermidis (1=1.7%), Klebsiella oxytoca (1=1.7%), Nocardia asteroides (1=1.7%), and Enterobacter cloacae (1=1.7%). Ceftiofur was the most effective drug (> 70% efficacy) against the pathogens in the disk diffusion test. In contrast, high resistance rate (> 70% resistance) was observed to penicillin (42.2%), enrofloxacin (33.3%), and amikacin (31.2%). Eleven (24.4%) isolates were resistant to three or more different pharmacological groups and were considered multidrug resistant strains. The present study emphasizes the etiological complexity of equine septic arthritis, and highlights the need to institute treatment based on the in vitro susceptibility pattern, due to the multidrug resistance of isolates. According to the available literature, this is the first report in Brazil on the investigation of the etiology. of the septic arthritis in a great number of horses associated with multidrug resistance of the isolates.
