The constantly tightening emission regulations demand the engines to be moreefficient, to get more power out of smaller engines. Higher engine loads andcomponent temperatures are causing more stresses to engine components. Therefore,a company that produces engines wanted to study if it would be possible to increasethe capabilities of the components by optimising the used material. In this final project work, a cylinder head will be studied. The cylinder heads for theengines are made of ductile cast iron. The limits of that material are near safety limits,and therefore a better material is needed. In this work are some previous studiesanalysed and tried to find how to optimise the used material. The optimised materialshould have better thermal conductivity properties combined with sufficient strengthproperties. Previous studies were analysed to gather knowledge of the elements that affect thematerial parameters. Those studies showed that copper, silicon, pearlite fraction, andthe use of chills are the elements to be optimised. Silicon and pearlite fraction waschosen as optimisation parameters because of their effect on the thermal conductivityand strength properties. Copper was chosen as an optimisation variable due to its effecton the pearlite formation. Chills were used to affect the cooling rate and thereby thepearlite formation. The work was made using MAGMASOFT™ simulation software to simulate cylinderhead casting. The simulated cylinder head was divided into 4 parts for the simulations.For those sections were then set targets for pearlite fraction according to previousstudies. The silicon content was kept constant in the simulation, based on the studiespresented in this work. Copper content was simulated with variations from 0 to 0.7weight-%, and chill heights were simulated from 20 to 60 mm and without chills. After simulating the different variables, the results were analysed. Then the selectedcasting simulation result was mapped to finite element simulation mesh to include thelocal material parameters to finite element simulation. With the finite elementsimulation, the estimated lifetime of the component was simulated. By analysing the casting simulation results, an optimal combination was found. Theoptimal material parameters for a cylinder head casting would be copper 0.5weight-%, silicon 1.9 weight-% and chills thicker than 40 mm on the flame plate. Theoptimised material gives more possibilities to develop engines even further when thecomponent demands are growing.

Lasten ja fantasiakirjallisuudessa henkilöhahmojen nimillä on usein tärkeä rooli ja monia funktioita: ne voivat kuvailla hahmoa eri tavoin tai niiden merkityssisältö voi viitata suoraan tai epäsuorasti siihen, millainen henkilö on kyseessä. Kun tällaisia nimiä sisältävä teksti käännetään toiselle kielelle, käännösratkaisuilla on keskeinen merkitys siinä, miten nimien merkityksellisyys avautuu kohdekielen lukijalle. Tässä tutkielmassa tarkastellaan, kuinka Harry Potter -sarjan kolmessa ensimmäisessä osassa esiintyvien velhohahmojen nimet on ilmaistu kirjojen suomennoksissa ja saksannoksissa. Tavoitteena on selvittää, onko nimiä käännetty tai muokattu kohdekielisiksi ja miten nimien mahdollinen merkitys ilmenee kohdetekstissä. Aineiston muodostavat alkuperäisteoksesta ja käännöksistä kerätyt 299 nimeä, jotka on jaettu kolmeen ryhmään sen perusteella, minkälainen hahmo on kyseessä. Käännöksissä esiintyviä nimiä verrataan sekä toisen kohdekielen käännökseen että alkuperäisteokseen: näin valotetaan käännösratkaisujen eroja, yksittäisten nimien käännösstrategioita sekä sitä, miten alkuperäisten nimien mahdollinen merkitys ja funktiot tulevat ilmi käännöksissä. Nimiä analysoitiin nimistöntutkimuksen, käännöstieteen ja lastenkirjallisuutta ja fantasiaa käsittelevän teoriataustan pohjalta. Yksi tutkimuksen olettamuksista oli, että kielellisistä eroavuuksista johtuen nimiä olisi suomennettu enemmän kuin käännetty saksaksi. Tulosten valossa olettamus pitää paikkansa: nimet ovat saksannoksessa pitkälti alkuperäisasussaan, kun taas suomennoksessa keskeisten hahmojen nimiä on usein muokattu, jos niillä on selkeä ja hahmon tulkinnan kannalta olennainen semanttinen merkitys. Englannin kielen nimistöön kuuluvat tavalliset nimet puolestaan on säilytetty molemmissa käännöksissä, sillä niiden voidaan katsoa ylläpitävän tarinan brittiläistä kontekstia.

Temperature sensitive polymer poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) and poly(N-isopropylacrylamide)-co-(N-hydroxymethylacrylamide ) grafted filter and membrane materials were produced and studied. Polyester and polypropylene multi-filament filter fabrics and polypropylene micro filtration membrane as well as polyethersulphone ultra filtration membrane were used as substrate materials. The surface modification of the substrates was carried out by activating the fabric surface with corona discharge treatment and polymerisation there after. The amount of the temperature sensitive polymer grafted on the substrate was determined by gravimetry and the surface morphology was analysed using SEM. The surface morphology was also analysed with FTIR-ATR spectroscopy. The amount of grafted polymer varies between 0,07 and 0,44 mg/cm2 on the polyester multi-filament filters. Based on the SEM-pictures, the grafted polymer seemed to localise mainly between the fibres, in fibre intersections and also in some occasions as spherical structures bound to the fibres. The results suggest that it is possible to produce membranes or filters in which the pore size and thus, the flow rate can be controlled by changing temperature. The studies have so far concentrated mainly on the surface modification of polyester and polypropylene multi-filament filter fabrics. However, the study will also be focused on the development of temperature sensitive functional membranes.

Mechanical properties and dimensional stability of wood fibre plastic composites containing different commercial coupling agents (PP-g-MAH) was studied. Polypropylene and two types of wood fibres, particle board chips and cutter chips from thermal treated wood were used in the composites. The grade of the coupling agent has an effect on the achieved mechanical properties of the composites. The effects were similar for both types of fibres used. The 3 w-% addition of the coupling agents improves more the impact strength properties than the 2 w-% addition. The wood-fibre plastic composites proved to be dimensionally stable. The same coupling agent that increased the mechanical properties of the composite, had also a positive effect on the dimensional stability of the composite. The strength properties of the composite materials are improved when the interaction between the polymer and wood fibres are improved. The improvement of the interaction increases also the dimensional stability.

Työn tarkoituksena oli selvittää biokomposiittien pitkäaikaiskestävyyttä. Biokomposiittien raaka-aineina käytettiin lisäaineistamatonta ja lisäaineistettua polylaktidia ja pellava- ja puuvillakuituja. Pitkäaikaiskestävyyttä tutkittiin altistus-, pitkäaikaiskestävyys- ja kierrätyskokeiden avulla. Ominaisuuksien muutoksia tutkittiin veto- ja iskulujuuskokeiden, DSC-, GPC- ja FTIR-analyysien sekä rakennetarkasteluiden (SEM) avulla. Työn kirjallisuusosassa esitellään polylaktidin sekä pellava- ja puuvillakuitujen ominaisuuksia. Lisäksi tarkastellaan komposiittirakennetta, altistuskokeita ja muovimateriaalien kierrätystä. Altistuskokeiden tarkoituksena oli simuloida nopeutetusti olosuhteita, joille materiaalit voivat käytön aikana altistua ja samalla selvittää niiden ominaisuuksien muutoksia kyseisissä olosuhteissa. Biokomposiittimateriaalit altistettiin kylmälle, kuumalle, trooppiselle ilmastolle, kuuma-kostea-syklille, vanhennukselle ja UV-säteilylle. Kosteuden ja kuuman yhteisvaikutus osoittautui komposiiteille erittäin haitalliseksi. Myös pelkkä kuumuus heikensi komposiittien ominaisuuksia erittäin paljon. Vanhennus- ja UV-altistukset laskivat selvästi enemmän lisäaineistamattomien materiaalien veto- ja iskulujuuksia kuin lisäaineistettujen. Kaikki altistukset vaikuttivat enemmän lisäaineistamattomien komposiittien iskulujuuteen. Pitkäaikaiskestävyyskokeissa selvitettiin materiaalien ominaisuuksien muutoksia vakio-olosuhteissa puolen vuoden ja vuoden kuluttua ruiskuvalusta. Materiaalien ominaisuudet eivät muuttuneet juurikaan kontrolloiduissa olosuhteissa puolessa vuodessa. Tuloksista on nähtävissä että matriisimateriaalilla, sen lisäaineistuksella ja lujitekuiduilla on vaikutusta materiaalin ominaisuuksien muuttumiseen. Tert-butyyliperbentsoaatilla lisäaineistaminen nopeuttaa matriisimateriaalin hajoamista. Puuvillakuiduilla on myös nopeuttava vaikutus hajoamiseen. Kierrätyskokeessa selvitettiin kierrätyksen vaikutusta materiaalin ominaisuuksiin. Kierrätys heikensi materiaalin mekaanisia ominaisuuksia. Kierrätettyä materiaalia ei voi käyttää alkuperäistä materiaalia vastaavan tuotteen valmistukseen. Kierrätettävä materiaali voidaan hyödyntää lisäämällä sitä pienissä erissä alkuperäisen raaka-aineen joukkoon, jolloin sen ei pitäisi vaikuttaa valmistettavan tuotteen ominaisuuksiin.

In recent years, we have seen the rise in interest on new service concepts that would take the advantage of capabilities of ecosystems instead that of single companies. In this paper we describe the initial steps on a new business initiative and how the ecosystem starts developing around the core.
