This paper describes the observations and the first data release (DR1) of the ESO public spectroscopic survey "VANDELS, a deep VIMOS survey of the CANDELS CDFS and UDS fields". VANDELS' main targets are star-forming galaxies at 2.4

VANDELS is a uniquely-deep spectroscopic survey of high-redshift galaxies with the VIMOS spectrograph on ESO's Very Large Telescope (VLT). The survey has obtained ultra-deep optical (0.48 < lambda < 1.0 micron) spectroscopy of ~2100 galaxies within the redshift interval 1.0 < z < 7.0, over a total area of ~0.2 sq. degrees centred on the CANDELS UDS and CDFS fields. Based on accurate photometric redshift pre-selection, 85% of the galaxies targeted by VANDELS were selected to be at z>=3. Exploiting the red sensitivity of the refurbished VIMOS spectrograph, the fundamental aim of the survey is to provide the high signal-to-noise ratio spectra necessary to measure key physical properties such as stellar population ages, masses, metallicities and outflow velocities from detailed absorption-line studies. Using integration times calculated to produce an approximately constant signal-to-noise ratio (20 < t_int < 80 hours), the VANDELS survey targeted: a) bright star-forming galaxies at 2.4 < z < 5.5, b) massive quiescent galaxies at 1.0 < z < 2.5, c) fainter star-forming galaxies at 3.0 < z < 7.0 and d) X-ray/Spitzer-selected active galactic nuclei and Herschel-detected galaxies. By targeting two extragalactic survey fields with superb multi-wavelength imaging data, VANDELS will produce a unique legacy data set for exploring the physics underpinning high-redshift galaxy evolution. We make use of SHARDS, an ultra-deep (<26.5AB) galaxy survey that provides optical photo-spectra at resolution R~50, via medium band filters (FWHM~150A). This dataset is combined with ancillary optical and NIR fluxes to constrain the dust attenuation law in the rest-frame NUV region of star-forming galaxies within the redshift window 1.5

Ultra-faint galaxies are hosted by small dark matter halos with shallow gravitational potential wells, hence their star formation activity is more sensitive to feedback effects. The shape of the faint-end of the high-$z$ galaxy luminosity function (LF) contains important information on star formation and its interaction with the reionization process during the Epoch of Reionization (EoR). High-$z$ galaxies with $M_{\rm UV}\gtrsim-17$ have only recently become accessible thanks to the Frontier Fields (FFs) survey combining deep {\it HST} imaging and the gravitational lensing effect. In this paper we investigate the faint-end of the LF at redshift $>$5 using the data of FFs clusters Abell 2744 (A2744), MACSJ0416.1-2403 (M0416), MACSJ0717.5+3745 (M0717) and MACSJ1149.5+2223 (M1149). We analyze both an empirical and a physically-motivated LF model to obtain constraints on a possible turn-over of LF at faint magnitudes. In the empirical model the LF drops fast when the absolute UV magnitude $M_{\rm UV}$ is much larger than a turn-over absolute UV magnitude $M_{\rm UV}^{\rm T}$. We obtain $M_{\rm UV}^{\rm T}\gtrsim-14.6 $ (15.2) at 1 (2) $\sigma$ confidence level (C.L.) for $z\sim6$. In the physically-motivated analytical model, star formation in halos with circular velocity below $v_c^*$ is fully quenched if these halos are located in ionized regions. Using updated lensing models and new additional FFs data, we re-analyze previous constraints on $v_c^*$ and $f_{\rm esc}$ presented by Castellano et al. 2016a (C16a) using a smaller dataset. We obtain new constraints on $v_c^*\lesssim 59$ km s$^{-1}$ and $f_{\rm esc}\lesssim 56\%$ (both at 2$\sigma$ C.L.) and conclude that there is no turn-over detected so far from the analyzed FFs data. We present the multiwavelength photometry of two Frontier Fields massive galaxy clusters MACS-J0717 and MACS-J1149 and their parallel fields, ranging from HST to ground based K and Spitzer IRAC bands, and the public release of photometric redshifts and rest frame properties of galaxies found in cluster and parallel pointings. This work was done within ASTRODEEP project and aims to provide a reference for future investigations of the extragalactic populations. To fully exploit the depth of the images and detect faint sources we used an accurate procedure which carefully removes the foreground light of bright cluster sources and the intra-cluster light thus enabling detection and measurement of accurate fluxes in crowded cluster regions. This same procedure has been successfully used to derive the photometric catalogue of MACS-J0416 and Abell-2744. The obtained multi-band photometry was used to derive photometric redshifts, magnification and physical properties of sources. In line with the first two FF catalogues released by ASTRODEEP, the photometric redshifts reach $\sim$4$\%$ accuracy. Moreover we extend the presently available samples to galaxies intrinsically as faint as H160$\sim$32-34 mag thanks the magnification factors induced to strong gravitational lensing. Our analysis allows us to probe galaxy masses larger then 10$^{7}$ M$\odot$ and/or SFR=0.1-1M$\odot$/yr out to redshift z$>6$., Comment: Submitted for publication in A&A. We exploit a sample of ultra-faint high-redshift galaxies (demagnified HST $H_{160}$ magnitude $>30$) in the Frontier Fields clusters A2744 and M0416 to constrain a theoretical model for the UV luminosity function (LF) in the presence of photoionization feedback. The objects have been selected on the basis of accurate photometric redshifts computed from multi-band photometry including 7 HST bands and deep $K_s$ and IRAC observations. Magnification is computed on an object-by-object basis from all available lensing models of the two clusters. We take into account source detection completeness as a function of luminosity and size, magnification effects and systematics in the lens modeling of the clusters under investigation. We find that our sample of high-$z$ galaxies constrain the cut-off halo circular velocity below which star-formation is suppressed by photo-ionization feedback to $v_c^{\rm cut} < 50$ km s$^{-1}$. This circular velocity corresponds to a halo mass of $\approx5.6\times10^9~M_\odot$ and $\approx2.3\times10^9~M_\odot$ at $z=5$ and 10 respectively: higher mass halos can thus sustain continuous star formation activity without being quenched by external ionizing flux. We present the first public release of photometric redshifts, galaxy rest-frame properties and associated magnification values in the cluster and parallel pointings of the first two Frontier Fields, Abell-2744 and MACS-J0416. We exploit a multi-wavelength catalogue ranging from HST to ground-based K and Spitzer IRAC which is specifically designed to enable detection and measurement of accurate fluxes in crowded cluster regions. The multi-band information is used to derive photometric redshifts and physical properties of sources detected either in the H-band image alone or from a stack of four WFC3 bands. To minimize systematics median photometric redshifts are assembled from six different approaches to photo-z estimates. Their reliability is assessed through a comparison with available spectroscopic samples. State of the art lensing models are used to derive magnification values on an object-by-object basis by taking into account sources positions and redshifts. We show that photometric redshifts reach a remarkable ~3-5% accuracy. After accounting for magnification the H band number counts are found in agreement at bright magnitudes with number counts from the CANDELS fields, while extending the presently available samples to galaxies intrinsically as faint as H160~32-33 thanks to strong gravitational lensing. The Frontier Fields allow to probe the galaxy stellar mass distribution at 0.5-1.5 dex lower masses, depending on magnification, with respect to extragalactic wide fields, including sources at Mstar~ 10^7-10^8 Msun at z>5. Similarly, they allow the detection of objects with intrinsic SFRs>1dex lower than in the CANDELS fields reaching 0.1-1 Msun/yr at z~6-10. We present the results of a study which uses spectral energy distribution (SED) fitting to investigate the evolution of the equivalent width (EW) of the Halpha emission line in star-forming galaxies over the redshift interval 1=1 in the CANDELS UDS and GOODS-S fields. We present the results of a study investigating the sizes and morphologies of redshift 4 < z < 8 galaxies in the CANDELS GOODS-S, HUDF and HUDF parallel fields. Based on non-parametric measurements and incorporating a careful treatment of measurement biases, we quantify the typical size of galaxies at each redshift as the peak of the log-normal size distribution, rather than the arithmetic mean size. Parameterizing the evolution of galaxy half-light radius as $r_{50} \propto (1+z)^n$, we find $n = -0.20 \pm 0.26$ at bright UV-luminosities ($0.3L_{*(z=3)} < L < L_*$) and $n = -0.47 \pm 0.62$ at faint luminosities ($0.12L_* < L < 0.3L_*$). Furthermore, simulations based on artificially redshifting our z~4 galaxy sample show that we cannot reject the null hypothesis of no size evolution. We show that this result is caused by a combination of the size-dependent completeness of high-redshift galaxy samples and the underestimation of the sizes of the largest galaxies at a given epoch. To explore the evolution of galaxy morphology we first compare asymmetry measurements to those from a large sample of simulated single S\'ersic profiles, in order to robustly categorise galaxies as either `smooth' or `disturbed'. Comparing the disturbed fraction amongst bright ($M_{UV} \leq -20$) galaxies at each redshift to that obtained by artificially redshifting our z~4 galaxy sample, while carefully matching the size and UV-luminosity distributions, we find no clear evidence for evolution in galaxy morphology over the redshift interval 4 < z < 8. Therefore, based on our results, a bright ($M_{UV} \leq -20$) galaxy at z~6 is no more likely to be measured as `disturbed' than a comparable galaxy at z~4, given the current observational constraints., Comment: 29 pages, 25 figures, 4 tables, published in MNRAS

(Abridged) We probe the merging channel of massive galaxies over the z=0.3-1.3 redshift window by studying close pairs in a sample of 238 galaxies with stellar mass >1E11Msun, from the deep (m<26.5AB, 3 sigma) SHARDS survey. SHARDS provides medium band photometry equivalent to low-resolution optical spectra (R~50), allowing us to obtain extremely accurate photometric redshifts (|Dz|/(1+z)~0.55%) and to improve the constraints on the age distribution of the stellar populations. A strong correlation is found between the age difference of central and satellite galaxy and stellar mass ratio, from negligible age differences in major mergers to age differences ~4 Gyr for 1:100 minor mergers. However, this correlation is simply a reflection of the mass-age trend in the general population. The dominant contributor to the growth of massive galaxies corresponds to mass ratios mu=Msat/Mcen>0.3, followed by a decrease in the fractional mass growth rate linearly proportional to log mu, at least down to mu~0.01, suggesting a decreasing role of mergers involving low-mass satellites, especially if dynamical friction timescales are taken into account. A simple model results in an upper limit for the average mass growth rate of massive galaxies of DM/M/Dt~ 0.08+-0.02 per Gyr, over the z<1 range, with a ~70% fractional contribution from (major) mergers with mu>0.3. The majority of the stellar mass contributed by mergers does not introduce significantly younger populations, in agreement with the small radial age gradients observed in present-day early-type galaxies., Comment: MNRAS in press, 14 pages, 10+1 figures, 3 tables

Over the past decade, 3D optical spectroscopy has become the preferred tool for understanding the properties of galaxies and is now increasingly used to carry out galaxy surveys. Low redshift surveys include SAURON, DiskMass, ATLAS3D, PINGS and VENGA. At redshifts above 0.7, surveys such as MASSIV, SINS, GLACE, and IMAGES have targeted the most luminous galaxies to study mainly their kinematic properties. The on-going CALIFA survey ($z\sim0.02$) is the first of a series of upcoming Integral Field Spectroscopy (IFS) surveys with large samples representative of the entire population of galaxies. Others include SAMI and MaNGA at lower redshift and the upcoming KMOS surveys at higher redshift. Given the importance of spatial scales in IFS surveys, the study of the effects of spatial resolution on the recovered parameters becomes important. We explore the capability of the CALIFA survey and a hypothetical higher redshift survey to reproduce the properties of a sample of objects observed with better spatial resolution at lower redshift. Using a sample of PINGS galaxies, we simulate observations at different redshifts. Using a compilation of 379 massive (stellar mass M > 10^{11} M_Sun) spheroid-like galaxies from the near-infrared Palomar/DEEP-2 survey, we have probed, up to z~1, whether the presence of companions depends on the size of the host galaxies. We have explored the presence of companions with mass ratios down to 1:10 and 1:100, with respect to the central massive galaxy, and within a projected distance of 30, 50 and 100 kpc of these objects. We find evidence for these companions being equally distributed around both compact and extended massive spheroids. This finding suggests that, at least since z~1, the merger activity in these objects is rather homogeneous across the whole population and its merger history is not affected for the size of the host galaxy. Accretion of minor satellites has been postulated as the most likely mechanism to explain the significant size evolution of the massive galaxies over cosmic time. Using a sample of 629 massive (Mstar~10^11 Msun) galaxies from the near-infrared Palomar/DEEP-2 survey, we explore which fraction of these objects has satellites with 0.01 Msat < Mcentral < 1 (1:100) up to z=1 and which fraction has satellites with 0.1 Msat < Mcentral < 1 (1:10) up to z=2 within a projected radial distance of 100 kpc. We find that the fraction of massive galaxies with satellites, after the background correction, remains basically constant and close to ~30% for satellites with a mass ratio down to 1:100 up to z=1, and ~15% for satellites with a 1:10 mass ratio up to z=2. The family of spheroid-like massive galaxies presents a 2-3 times larger fraction of objects with satellites than the group of disk-like massive galaxies. A crude estimation of the number of 1:3 mergers a massive spheroid-like galaxy experiences since z~2 is around 2. Context. We carry out a detailed 2D study of the ionised gas in the local universe galaxy UGC9837. In nearby galaxies, like the galaxy in question here, the spatial distribution of the physical properties can be studied in detail, providing benchmarks for galaxy formation models. Aims. Our aim is to derive detailed and spatially resolved physical properties of the ionised gas of UGC 9837. In addition, we derive an integrated spectrum of the galaxy and study how varying spatial coverage affects the derived integrated properties. We also study how the same properties would be seen if the galaxy was placed at a higher redshift and observed as part of one of the high-z surveys. Methods. UGC9837 was observed using the PMAS PPAK integral field unit. The spectra are reduced and calibrated and the stellar and ionised components separated. Using strong emission line ratios of the ionised gas, the source of ionisation, the dust extinction, the star formation rate, the electron density and the oxygen abundance derived from a total integrated spectrum, central integrated spectrum and individual fibre spectra are studied. Finally, the same properties are studied in a spectrum whose spatial resolution is degraded to simulate high-z observations. Results. The spatial distribution of the ionised gas properties is consistent with inside-out growing scenario of galaxies. We also find that lack of spatial coverage would bias the results derived from the integrated spectrum leading, e.g., to an under-estimation of ionisation and over-estimation of metallicity, if only the centre of the galaxy was covered by the spectrum. Our simulation of high-z observations shows that part of the spatial information, such as dust and SFR distribution would be lost while shallower gradients in metallicity and ionisation strength would be detected., Comment: 12 pages, 9 figures, accepted for publication in A&A

We present here the Calar Alto Legacy Integral Field Area (CALIFA) survey, which has been designed to provide a first step in this direction.We summarize the survey goals and design, including sample selection and observational strategy.We also showcase the data taken during the first observing runs (June/July 2010) and outline the reduction pipeline, quality control schemes and general characteristics of the reduced data. This survey is obtaining spatially resolved spectroscopic information of a diameter selected sample of $\sim600$ galaxies in the Local Universe (0.005< z <0.03). CALIFA has been designed to allow the building of two-dimensional maps of the following quantities: (a) stellar populations: ages and metallicities; (b) ionized gas: distribution, excitation mechanism and chemical abundances; and (c) kinematic properties: both from stellar and ionized gas components. CALIFA uses the PPAK Integral Field Unit (IFU), with a hexagonal field-of-view of $\sim1.3\sq\arcmin'$, with a 100% covering factor by adopting a three-pointing dithering scheme. The optical wavelength range is covered from 3700 to 7000 {\AA}, using two overlapping setups (V500 and V1200), with different resolutions: R\sim850 and R\sim1650, respectively. CALIFA is a legacy survey, intended for the community. The reduced data will be released, once the quality has been guaranteed. The analyzed data fulfill the expectations of the original observing proposal, on the basis of a set of quality checks and exploratory analysis. We present the study of a large sample of early-type dwarf galaxies in the Coma cluster observed with DEIMOS on the Keck II to determine their internal velocity dispersion. We focus on a subsample of 41 member dwarf elliptical galaxies for which the velocity dispersion can be reliably measured, 26 of which were studied for the first time. Aims: Integral Field Spectroscopy (IFS) is a powerful approach for the study of nearby galaxies since it enables a detailed analysis of their resolved physical properties. Here we present the sample of nearby galaxies selected to exploit the two dimensional information provided by the IFS. Methods: We observed a sample of 48 galaxies from the Local Universe with the PPAK Integral Field Spectroscopy unit (IFU), of the PMAS spectrograph, mounted at the 3.5m telescope at Calar Alto Observatory (Almeria, Spain). Two different setups were used during these studies (low -V300- and medium -V600- resolution mode) covering a spectral range of around 3700-7000 Angs. We developed a full automatic pipeline for the data reduction, that includes an analysis of the quality of the final data products. We applied a decoupling method to obtain the ionised gas and stellar content of these galaxies, and to derive the main physical properties of the galaxies. To asses the accuracy in the measurements of the different parameters, we performed a set of simulations to derive the expected relative errors obtained with these data. In addition, we extracted two aperture, central and integrated spectra, from the datacubes. The main properties of the stellar populations and ionised gas of these galaxies and an estimate of their relative errors are derived from those spectra, as well as from the whole datacubes. Results: The comparison of the central spectrum extracted from the datacubes and the SDSS spectrum for those galaxies in common shows a good agreement between the derived values from both samples. We find differences in the properties of galaxies when comparing a central and an integrated spectra, showing the effects of the extracted aperture in the interpretation of the data. We present the Calar Alto Legacy Integral Field Area survey (CALIFA). CALIFA's main aim is to obtain spatially resolved spectroscopic information for ~600 galaxies of all Hubble types in the Local Universe (0.005< z <0.03). The survey has been designed to allow three key measurements to be made: (a) Two-dimensional maps of stellar populations (star formation histories, chemical elements); (b) The distribution of the excitation mechanism and element abundances of the ionized gas; and (c) Kinematic properties (velocity fields, velocity dispersion), both from emission and from absorption lines. To cover the full optical extension of the target galaxies (i.e. out to a 3sigma depth of ~23 mag/arcsec2), CALIFA uses the exceptionally large field of view of the PPAK/PMAS IFU at the 3.5m telescope of the Calar Alto observatory. We use two grating setups, one covering the wavelength range between 3700 and 5000 AA at a spectral resolution R~1650, and the other covering 4300 to 7000 AA at R~850. The survey was allocated 210 dark nights, distributed in 6 semesters and starting in July 2010 and is carried out by the CALIFA collaboration, comprising ~70 astronomers from 8 different countries. As a legacy survey, the fully reduced data will be made publically available, once their quality has been verified. The study of stellar populations in early-type galaxies in different environments is a powerful tool for constraining their star formation histories. This study has been traditionally restricted to the optical range, where dwarfs around the turn-off and stars at the base of the RGB dominate the integrated light at all ages. The near-infrared spectral range is especially interesting since in the presence of an intermediate-age population, AGB stars are the main contributors. In this letter, we measure the near-infrared indices NaI and D$_{\rm CO}$ for a sample of 12 early-type galaxies in low density environments and compare them with the Fornax galaxy sample presented by Silva et al. (2008). The analysis of these indices in combination with Lick/IDS indices in the optical range reveals i) the NaI index is a metallicity indicator as good as C4668 in the optical range, and ii) D$_{\rm CO}$ is a tracer of intermediate-age stellar populations. We find that low-mass galaxies in low density environments show higher NaI and D$_{\rm CO}$ than those located in Fornax cluster, which points towards a late stage of star formation for the galaxies in less dense environments, in agreement with results from other studies using independent methods., Comment: 7 pages, 3 figures, accepted for publication in ApJL

Context: The analysis of unresolved stellar populations demands evolutionary synthesis models with realistic physical ingredients and extended wavelength coverage. Aims: To obtain a quantitative description of the first CO bandhead at 2.3 $\mu$m, to allow stellar population models to provide improved predictions in this wavelength range. Methods: We have observed a new stellar library with a better coverage of the stellar atmospheric parameter space than preceding works. We have performed a detailed analysis of the robustness of previous CO index definitions with spectral resolution, wavelength calibration, signal-to-noise ratio, and flux calibration. Results: We define a new line-strength index for the first CO bandhead at 2.3 $\mu$m, D$_{\rm CO}$, better suited for stellar population studies than previous index definitions. We compute empirical fitting functions for the CO feature as a function of the stellar parameters (T$_{\rm eff}$, $\log g$ and [Fe/H]), showing a detailed quantitative metallicity dependence., Comment: 26 pages, 15 figures, accepted for publication in A&A.
