Coastal embayed areas are important sites for many benthic and nektonic organisms that are being increasingly threatened by habitat degradation. The knowledge on the biology of these organisms can reveal the importance of such areas for their life cycles. Furthermore, population information is also imperative to recognize the importance of these species to structure coastal ecosystems and to provide support to management strategies. In this study, we aimed to evaluate the importance of a coastal embayment area for the generalist predator starfish Astropecten marginatus and Luidia senegalensis, analyzing their spatio-temporal distribution and populational parameters and evaluating whether (1) the species present a differential use of the area, (2) the species use the bay for recruitment, growth and reproduction and (3) there is an ontogenetic or gender related variation in the bay occupation. This study was carried out at Caraguatatuba Bay (SE Brazil), with monthly samples from July/03 to October/04. Although Astropecten was more abundant than Luidia, the two species had similar shifts in abundance, with peaks during cold/dry months, which are partly related to recruitment patterns. Species were distributed mainly towards the southern area of the bay, where A. marginatus had denser aggregations. Both species used the bay for recruitment, growth and reproduction. Males and females of both species occurred in similar numbers (sex ratio 1:1), except in late autumn (May-June) when females became more numerous. An annual reproductive cycle was observed for both species, with spawning occurring mainly in the rainy season, and recruitment mainly during fall/winter. Large individuals (>17 cm) of L. senegalensis were sub-represented in the bay, indicating possible adult migration to deeper areas, whereas A. marginatus had a more resident behavior. Distribution of both species correlated well with diet information previously available, with prey-partitioning suggested as a mechanism that allow their similar occupation of the area, and ontogenetic diet shifts explaining the adult migration of L. senegalensis. This highlights the relevance of feeding information to predict distribution of starfish. Our results elucidate the importance of the studied bay for the life cycle of these keystone species, elucidating species-specific vulnerabilities to coastal degradation and the importance of recognizing populational and distribution parameters in order to inform management policies.

Although it is one of the major threats to sandy beach ecosystems, the impact of harvesting on marine invertebrates is poorly understood, especially considering that recreational harvesting is practiced with little or no management on beaches worldwide. Current management strategies not only target economically valuable resources and focus on biological aspects of harvested populations, but they also tend to neglect socioeconomic information such as the profile, behavior, consumption characteristics of harvesters and their perception of threats to their activities, all of which are little studied. This study evaluated the social aspects of harvesting of the clam Tivela mactroides, based on semi-structured interviews carried out at Caraguatatuba Bay, Sao Paulo, Brazil, during two sampling periods between 2003 and 2008. This cultural activity has continued for decades, with the continual entry of new harvesters, and the harvesters’ profile and methods varied little over time. Clammers do not depend economically on the resource, use clams mainly for family consumption, harvest them with low frequency, prefer free time periods (for subsistence) and invest little in developing more-efficient harvesting strategies, such as criteria for selecting the harvesting area and more-efficient tools. The clammers showed little awareness of the problems related to harvesting of T. mactroides and the risks associated with its consumption, despite local threats such as episodes of poor water quality and oil spills. Changes in stock abundance did not affect the socioeconomic profile or collecting behavior of clammers, and there was no evidence that harvesting pressure affects fluctuations in the clam stock. An alternate ecosystem-based management approach could include improvement of environmental quality, to guarantee food security for low-income families and food safety for all consumers, instead of traditionally employed resource-based restrictive practices, since clam collecting in Caraguatatuba Bay is a low-impact socio-cultural activity. These findings emphasize that managers of subsistence and recreational activities should not focus only on the potential environmental problems caused by exploitation, but may also benefit from understanding the harvesters, harvesting procedure and consumption estimates, as well as the sociocultural role of and threats to these activities.

Evaluation of relative (allometric) growth provides useful information to understand the development of organisms, as well as to aid in the management of fishery-exploited species. Usually, relative growth analyses use classical models such as the linear equation or the power function (allometric equation). However, these methods do not consider discontinuities in growth and may mask important biological information. As an alternative to overcome poor results and misleading interpretations, recent studies have suggested the use of more complex models, such as non-linear regressions, in conjunction with a model selection approach. Here, we tested differences in the performance of diverse models (simple linear regression, power function, and polynomial models) to assess the relative growth of the trigonal clam Tivela mactroides, an important fishing resource along the South American coast. Regressions were employed to relate parameters of the shell (length (L), width (W), height (H) and weight (SW)) among each other and with soft parts of the organism (dry weight (DW) and ash-free dry weight (ASDW)). Then, model selection was performed using the information theory and multi-model inference approach. The power function was more suitable to describe the relationships involving shell parameters and soft parts weight parameters (i.e., L vs. SW, DW, and AFDW, and SW vs. DW). However, it failed in unveiling changes in the morphometric relationships between shell parameters (i.e., L vs. W and H; W vs. H) over time, which were better described by polynomial functions. Linear models, in turn, were not selected for any relationship. Overall, our results show that more complex models (in this study polynomial functions) can unveil changes in growth related to modifications in environmental features or physiology. Therefore, we suggest that classical and more complex models should be combined in future studies of allometric growth of molluscs.

Tivela mactroides is an important fishery resource for local artisanal fishermen in Brazil and the establishment of management programmes for this species requires information about its reproductive cycle, the main focus of this study. The reproductive pattern of T. mactroides from Caraguatatuba Bay on the southeast coast of Brazil was analysed by means of histological techniques from November 2003 to October 2004. The species had heterogeneous continuous gametogenesis, with no resting period and the sex ratio did not differ significantly from 1:1. Maturity indices varied over the months, with slightly higher proportions of mature gametes from May 2004 to October 2004, which indicates a high proportion of spawning in winter and spring; however, small releases of gametes may also have occurred during summer and autumn. Small-scale fisheries are frequently overlooked for research and management, and their social and environmental impacts are often overlooked as well, preventing the implementation of appropriate actions for their sustainability. Additionally, the dynamics of beach clam fisheries and their importance for local communities are not well understood. A study on the population biology of the clam Tivela mactroides in Caraguatatuba Bay, southeastern Brazil, revealed intense harvesting of this resource by both residents and tourists. The population structure, growth and production of the trigonal clam Tivela mactroides were investigated by monthly sampling between January 2003 and October 2004 in two areas (southern and northern) of the intertidal and subtidal zones of Caraguatatuba Bay, Southeastern Brazil. Intertidal sampling was carried out in each area along eight transects perpendicular to the shoreline. In the subtidal zone of both areas, one 50-m dredging was performed along five sampling stations arranged on three transects perpendicular to the coast. The intertidal abundance of T. mactroides was higher in the southern (more dissipative conditions) than in the northern area. High abundances occurred in February–March 2004 in the south and in September 2004 in the north. The size structure showed that younger individuals dominated in the sublittoral, indicating that recruitment occurs in this zone, followed by the migration of these individuals to the intertidal, where they complete their life cycle. Tivela mactroides showed continuous reproduction, with 26 cohorts detected in the study period. The lower estimates for the growth index (/′ = 3.22), mortality rate (Z = 2.10 year � 1 ) and turnover rate (P/B = 1.21 year � 1 ), and conversely the longer life span (2.5 years) of T. mactroides in Caraguatatuba Bay (24°S) compared with Venezuelan populations (10°N) suggests a latitudinal pattern of these life-history traits. The high production of T. mactroides in Caraguatatuba Bay was due to continuous recruitment and rapid and continuous growth, and demonstrates the importance of T. mactroides as a biological resource for many marine species and for the local residents.

The population biology, life history parameters and diet of the shorthead drum Larimus breviceps were assessed in Caraguatatuba Bight, a shallow non-estuarine environment. Two homogeneous areas, South and North, were selected, avoiding major sources of continental waters. Monthly from October 2003 to October 2004, three random samples were taken by trawling from 800 to 1600 m outward from the waterline. Larimus breviceps was the third most abundant species during the study period, and was considerably more abundant from February to May 2004. Smaller individuals were also more abundant during this period, which we therefore considered the main recruitment period of the species. The predominance of individuals of a limited size range (6–12 cm total length) seems to indicate that the area functions as a nursery for L. breviceps, sheltering late-juvenile individuals. This feature complicated the estimation of life history parameters, but by taking into account the peculiarities of the area and the identification of similar modal progressions during the sampling period, we obtained reasonable values for the parameterization of the von Bertalanffy Growth Model (L∞ = 32.25 cm, K = 0.72, tmax 4.38 y, Z = 12.104). The total mortality index does not reflect mortality rates only, but also the migration of older individuals to other, probably deeper, areas. The diet was based mainly on Crustacea, specifically Decapoda shrimps, with slight seasonal alterations.

Knowledge of population parameters and the ability to predict their responses to environmental changes are useful tools to aid in the appropriate management and conservation of natural resources. Samples of the sciaenid fish Stellifer rastrifer were taken from August 2003 through October 2004 in shallow areas of Caraguatatuba Bight, southeastern Brazil. The results showed a consistent presence of length-frequency classes throughout the year and low values of the gonadosomatic index of this species, indicating that the area is not used for spawning or residence of adults, but rather shelters individuals in late stages of development. The results may serve as a caveat for assessments of transitional areas such as the present one, the nursery function of which is neglected compared to estuaries and mangroves. The danger of mismanaging these areas by not considering their peculiarities is emphasized by using these data as a study case for the development of some broadly used population-parameter analyses. The individuals' body growth parameters from the von Bertalanffy model were estimated based on the most common approaches, and the best values obtained from traditional quantification methods of selection were very prone to bias. The low gonadosomatic index (GSI) estimated during the period was an important factor in stimulating us to select more reliable parameters of body growth ( L ∞ = 20.9, K = 0.37 and Z = 2.81), which were estimated based on assuming the existence of spatial segregation by size. The data obtained suggest that the estimated mortality rate included a high rate of migration of older individuals to deeper areas, where we assume that they completed their development.

Stranding combined with mass-mortality events of sandy-beach organisms is a frequent but little-understood phenomenon, which is generally studied based on discrete episodes. The frequency, magnitude, and possible causes of stranding and mass-mortality events of the trigonal clam Tivela mactroides were assessed based on censuses of stranded individuals, every four days from September 2007 through December 2008, in Caraguatatuba Bay, southeastern Brazil. Stranded clams were classified as dying (closed valves did not open when forced) or dead (closed valves were easily opened). Information on wave parameters and the living intertidal clam population was used to assess possible causes of stranding. This fine-scale monitoring showed that stranding occurred widely along the shore and year-round, with peaks interspersed with periods of low or no mortality. Dead clams showed higher mean density than dying individuals, but a lower mean shell length, attributed to a higher tolerance to desiccation of larger individuals. Wave height had a significant negative relationship to the density of dying individuals, presumed to be due to the accretive nature of low-energy waves: when digging out, clams would be more prone to be carried upward and unable to return; while larger waves, breaking farther from the beach and with a stronger backwash, would prevent stranding in the uppermost areas. This ecological finding highlights the need for refined temporal studies on mortality events, in order to understand them more clearly. Last, the similar size structure of stranded clams and the living population indicated that the stranded individuals are from the intertidal or shallow subtidal zone, and reinforces the ecological and behavioral components of this process, which have important ecological and socioeconomic implications for the management of this population.

Beach clam fisheries often provide an alternate income for traditional fishermen, but this activity is highly vulnerable to urbanization of coastal areas. Tivela mactroides is a beach clam commonly harvested in the Caribbean (Venezuela) and on the south‐eastern Brazilian coast. Only localized records on its spatial structure in size and abundance are available to support management of this clam. The present study showed that the spatial distribution in abundance and size of T. mactroides in Caraguatatuba Bay, state of Sao Paulo, Brazil, has both along‐ and across‐shore (intertidal and subtidal) components. The nature of this distribution should be taken into account in the design of further population or monitoring studies concerning this species. The spatial distribution of the ghost crab Ocypode quadrata (Crustacea, Brachyura) was described in five low‐energy tide‐dominated sandy beaches in Sao Sebastiao Channel (Grande, Zimbro, Pitangueiras, Cabelo Gordo, and Segredo). On each beach, the zonation study was performed on five random 1 m wide transects sampled from the water line to the vegetation. In general, individuals occurred above 1 m in height in relation to mean low water (MLW) and peaked between 1.5 and 2.0 m. The sandy beaches were then divided into three 1 m wide strips (tidal levels) parallel to the water line and equivalent to medium intertidal, upper intertidal, and subterrestrial fringe to test the effect of beach and tidal level on the abundance and size of O. quadrata. The molluscan macrofauna from 13 oceanic sheltered intertidal unconsolidated environments and its relationship with abiotic factors were studied in order to establish the degree of species richness and to understand the role environment plays in structuring such assemblages. Four distinct intertidal habitat types were recognized based on molluscan assemblage descriptors (diversity, richness and density) and abiotic characteristics. The mean grain size (in phy units) and the beach slope showed a negative relationship with the diversity, richness and density. Coarser sediments were favorable to molluscan fauna in the study areas, contrasting the well-known negative effect of this type of sand on fauna in typical oceanic beaches. The low-tide terraces, typical from tide-dominated areas, and the presence of physical (rocky fragments) and biogenic (gravel) structures, were also associated to the higher values of richness. The high richness in the study area as a whole seemed to be a direct consequence of its environmental heterogeneity, once it was composed by quite distinct habitat types.A malacofauna de 13 ambientes oceânicos, protegidos, entremarés e não-consolidados e sua relação com os fatores abióticos foram estudados com o intuito de conhecer a riqueza de espécies e compreender o papel dos fatores abióticos na estruturação das associações. Quatro tipos distintos de ambiente entremarés foram reconhecidos com base nos descritores da comunidade (diversidade, riqueza e densidade) e nas características abióticas. O tamanho médio do grão de areia (em phy) e a inclinação da praia mostraram uma relação negativa com a diversidade, riqueza e densidade. Sedimentos grossos foram favoráveis à fauna de moluscos nas áreas estudadas, contrastando o bem conhecido efeito negativo deste tipo de areia sobre a fauna em praias oceânicas típicas. Os terraços de maré baixa, típicos de áreas dominadas pela maré, e a presença de estruturas biogênicas, tais como fragmentos rochosos e cascalho, estiveram também associados aos altos valores de riqueza. O grande número de espécies registrado na área estudada como um todo parece ser uma conseqüência direta desta heterogeneidade ambiental, uma vez que esta é composta por tipos de ambientes altamente distintos.

This study addressed the effect predation on gastropods by shell-breaking crabs has on shell availability to hermit crabs. (1) Variable rates of predation on the gastropod Cerithium atratum were recorded within and among the crab species Menippe nodifrons, Panopeus occidentalis, Eriphia gonagra, and Callinectes danae. Predation rate was more dependent on crab size than on crab species, and all predators consumed the largest individuals of C. atratum available. Comparison of M. nodifrons and C. danae predation of the rocky shore gastropods Stramonita haemastoma, Morula nodulosa, and Tegula viridula revealed that only M. nodifrons consumed M. nodulosa, while both crabs preyed more heavily upon S. haemastoma than on T. viridula. M. nodifrons crushed larger individuals of Stramonita. (2) Prey subjected to M. nodifrons and C. danae presented different criti- cal sizes (S. haemastoma > T. viridula = M. nodulosa. (3) The investment in shell material varied among gastropod species (M. nodulosa > T. viridula > S. haemastoma) and was inversely related to their consumption rate by M. nodifrons. (4) M. nodifrons generally crushed its prey, C. danae and E. gonagra used both peeling and crushing, and P. occidentalis generally peeled. Crushing was usually lethal, while peeling attempts resulted in higher prey survival. Predatory strategy was dependent on relative prey size: small shells were crushed, medium-sized were peeled, and large ones were non- destructively preyed upon through the aperture. (5) Most shells used by the hermit crab Pagurus criniticornis (68%) in nature presented damage very similar to that recorded for gastropods preyed upon experimentally, indicating that this kind of predation makes new shells available to hermit crabs. (6) M. nodifrons showed a clear preference for the gastropod C. atratum over the hermit crab P. criniticornis, suggesting differential predation pressures in nature. In conclusion, shell availability to hermit crabs was demonstrated to be dependent on predator species and size, gastropod architec- tural defenses, and on the relative predator-prey size, which determined the predatory strategy and the damage inflicted on the shells.

This study was designed to evaluate the effect of interference and exploitation competition in shell partitioning between two hermit crab species (Pagurus criniticornis and Clibanarius antillensis). Field samples revealed that shells of the gastropod Cerithium atratum were the main resource used by both hermit crab species and that Pagurus used eroded or damaged shells in higher frequency than Clibanarius. The exploitative ability of each species was compared between species in the laboratory using dead gastropod (Cerithium) baits to simulate predation events and signalize newly available shells to hermit crabs. Pagurus reached the baits more rapidly than Clibanarius, but this higher exploitative ability did not explain shell utilization patterns in nature. Another experiment evaluated the dominance hierarchy between these two hermit crab species and revealed that Clibanarius was able to outcompete Pagurus for higher quality shells in agonistic encounters. This higher interference competitive ability of Clibanarius in relation to Pagurus may explain field observations. Nevertheless, Pagurus may be responsible to enhance shell availability to other hermit crab species that have lower ability to find and use newly available shells. Differently, the poorer condition of shells used by Pagurus, the higher ability of this species to attend gastropod predation events and its higher consumption rate by shell-breaking crabs (Menippe nodifrons) may increase its predation risks, thus revealing the disadvantages of such an exploitative competitive strategy for hermit crabs.

This study describes the daily activity in a simulated high tide situation of four species of hermit crabs (Pagurus criniticornis, Clibanarius antillensis, C. sclopetarius, and C. vittatus) that coexist in an intertidal flat in southeastern Brazil. Observations were done in two-hour intervals during two subsequent days (48 h) in three replicate pools with thirty crabs each. Among species (between and within genera) there was an evident variation in activity patterns, of which three could be distinguished. The circadian activity patterns of C. antillensis and C. vittatus could be characterized as evening and nocturnal, with resting peaks during the morning and afternoon. The circadian activity pattern of C. sclopetarius was characterized by two marked peaks of inactivity, corresponding to dawn and evening, which could represent an intrinsic association with the semi-lunar tidal cycles of the study area. Pagurus criniticornis showed high activity not influenced by day/night conditions during the entire observed period. These activity pattern variations of the studied hermit crabs should be taken into account in designing further experiments. More precise and accurate interspecific behavioral comparisons among species could be achieved in nocturnal experiments, the high activity period of all species.

The clam Tivela mactroides is an important sandy-beach resource along the western Atlantic coast, and is widely harvested by both tourists and residents for recreational, subsistence and/or economic purposes. These clams are intensively exploited in Caraguatatuba Bay on the southeastern Brazilian coast. Similarly to most coastal areas around the world, this bay is subject to a variety of environmental threats derived from human occupation (e.g., sewage) and economic activities (e.g., oil spills). Considering the history of changes in this area and current plans for development, environmental pressures are expected to increase. This prospect raises concerns regarding food safety of members of the public, including clam harvesters, who consume local seafood. In order to provide baseline information to compare with future situations, this study analyzed the contamination of clam meat by microorganisms (fecal coliforms, Salmonella sp., Vibrio cholerae, and Staphylococcus aureus) and Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs). Preliminary evaluations revealed microorganism contamination levels above the maximum limits allowed under Brazilian legislation; with higher levels in the central portion of the bay. Temporal evaluations at three sampling points in this area revealed year-round contamination by all microorganisms, i.e., a continuous risk for clam consumers. Although the effectiveness of thermal processing used by consumers could not be formally tested in this study, it has the potential to reduce the contamination by fecal coliforms, Salmonella sp., and S. aureus to safe levels, as demonstrated in the two samples analyzed. However, although S. aureus can be totally eliminated, its heat-tolerant toxins may still affect consumers. Concentrations of individual compounds (congeners) and total PAHs were recorded, indicating contamination derived from oil spills. The results raise concerns regarding traditional small-scale fisheries, which can be threatened by the intensification of human activities in the coastal region, thus requiring continuous monitoring of the quality of seafoods, in addition to effective communication of the risks to consumers, and efficient measures to reduce both sewage and industrial pollution.

Coexisting hermit crabs may competitively interact for shells and microhabitats, mainly when shell availability is habitat-related. Three species of Clibanarius (C. antillensis, C. sclopetarius, and C. vittatus) coexist in the intertidal region of Pernambuco Islet, Araçá Region, São Sebastião Channel, southeastern Brazil. This study evaluated crab preferences for four substrate types used by these species in nature (rocky shore, pebbles, sand, and mud) in allopatric (single species) and sympatric (three species) treatments in simulations of high tide and low tide. The substrate preference of the three hermit crabs did not vary between low and high tide situations. At low tide the crabs either moved into holes in the highly complex rocky substrate or buried themselves in mud. Substrate selection may explain the patterns of substrate use in nature only for C. vittatus. Clibanarius antillensis and C. sclopetarius showed closer similarities in the pattern of substrate selection in the sympatric treatment with the substrate use in nature than in allopatric treatment, indicating a positive influence (dependence) of the presence of one species on the presence of another. Use of sub-optimal substrates, mainly by C. antillensis, may be caused by other factors such as its low desiccation tolerances. If competition for space takes place among these species, it would be more intense between C. sclopetarius and C. vittatus given their higher overlap in substrate preference than between them and C. antillensis. Este estudo avaliou a preferência dos ermitões por quatro tipos de substrato (costão, seixos, areia e lodo) utilizados por eles na natureza em tratamentos alopátricos (uma espécie) e simpátricos (três espécies) em situações simuladas de marés alta e baixa. A preferência por tipos de substrato não variou entre as simulações de marés alta e baixa. Na maré baixa, os ermitões deslocaram-se para buracos e fendas ou enterraram-se no lodo. A seleção de substratos pode explicar o padrão de uso de substratos na natureza apenas para C. vittatus. Clibanarius antillensis e C. sclopetarius apresentaram maiores similaridades na seleção de substratos no tratamento simpátrico e no uso na natureza que no tratamento alopátrico, indicando influência positiva (dependência) da presença de uma espécie em função da outra. O uso de substratos subótimos no campo, principalmente por C. antillensis, pode ter sido causado por outros fatores, como suas baixas tolerâncias à dessecação. Se houver competição por substratos entre as três espécies, ela será mais intensa entre C. sclopetarius e C. vittatus, dada a maior sobreposição na preferência por substratos entre essas espécies que entre elas e C. antillensis.

Species richness, abundance, and spatial distribution of the molluscan macrofauna were studied in two intertidal environments of Sao Sebastiao Channel, on the northern coast of Sao Paulo State, Brazil. The study sites, located in Sao Francisco and Engenho d'Agua beaches, were sandy substrates with rock fragments. Samples were taken in defined intertidal areas divided into three levels (lower, middle, and upper). Thirty-six 0·16 m2samples were collected in each level. Richness was higher at Engenho d'Agua (35 species) than at Sao Francisco (20 species). In Sao Francisco, more species and individuals were found at the lower level. The higher homogeneity in species distribution over the entire studied intertidal area in Engenho d'Agua than in Sao Francisco was probably associated with the lower slope of the former one. This shows that the occurrence and distribution of molluscs were strongly related to tidal exposure. The organic pollution in Sao Francisco also influenced the molluscan assemblage, reducing richness and diversity.

This study describes and quantifies the air exposure tolerance of four sympatric hermit crabs (Pagurus criniticomis, Clibanarius antillensis, C. sclopetarius, and C. vittatus) in an intertidal area in southeastern Brazil. We report on survivorship, percentage and rate of weight and water loss until death, and overall body water content. The coexisting populations showed similar percentages of overall body water content and weight and water loss until death. Survivorship depended on crab size rather than species, and was positively correlated with crab size within each species (linear relationship) and with the size of all individuals of this hermit crab assemblage (exponential relationship). Each species had a characteristic rate of weight and water loss, indicating the existence of different physiological adaptations to resist desiccation. These differences were directly related to the species’ distribution patterns in the intertidal zone.

This study was performed in the intertidal zone of Barra Velha, Perequê, and Engenho d'Água beaches, located on São Sebastião Island (São Paulo State, Brazil), to assess the composition, abundance, and zonation of the polychaete community in the intertidal zone. Four structurally different sectors were established, two on Barra Velha (I and lI), one on Perequê, and one on Engenho d'Água. Each sector was divided into 3 tidal levels (lower, middle, and upper), in which 5 or 6 random samples were taken seasonally using a corer of 0.01 m2 in area. Laeonereis acuta, Capitella capitata, and Heteromastus filiformis dominated in the upper tidal levels, and Scoloplos (Leodamas) sp. and Cirriformia tentaculata in the lower levels. The structural complexity of Engenho d'Água, caused by rocky fTagments mixed with sand, supported the richest and most diverse polychaete fauna of ali the sectors. The salinity of the interstitial water and the organic matter content were the principal factors related to the zonation patterns at these sites.Este trabalho foi realizado na região entremarés das praias Barra Velha, Perequê e Engenho d'Água, situadas na Ilha de São Sebastião (Estado de São Paulo, Brasil), com o objetivo de estudar a composição, abundância e zonação da taxocenose dos poliquetas. Quatro setores estruturalmente diferentes foram delimitados, sendo dois na Barra Velha (I e II), um no Perequê e um no Engenho d'Água. Cada setor foi dividido em 3 níveis entremarés (inferior, intermediário e superior), nos quais 5-6 amostras aleatórias foram tomadas sazonalmente utilizando um delimitador com 0,01 m2 de área. Laeonereis acuta, Capitella capitata e Heteromastus filiformis ocorreram predominantemente nos níveis superiores e Scoloplos (Leodamas) sp. e Cirriformia tentaculata nos inferiores. A complexidade estrutural do Engenho d' Água, caracterizado por fragmentos rochosos misturados ao sedimento, sustentou a fauna de poliquetas mais rica e diversificada dentre os setores. A salinidade da água intersticial e o teor de matéria orgânica foram os principais parâmetros determinantes da zonação nestes locais.

Pomadasys corvinaeformis inhabits sandy and rocky bottoms in coastal waters, and is common in trawl samples taken from beaches. The species is very abundant on the Brazilian coast, and is of high economic and ecological importance. This study examined the spatio-temporal distribution, population biology and diet of P. corvinaeformis in Southeastern Brazil. Samples were taken by trawling monthly from August 2003 to October 2004, in two previously selected areas. The Northern area is more exposed to wave activity and is influenced by a river, functioning as a small estuary. In contrast, the Southern area is relatively sheltered from wave energy and influenced to a lesser degree by smaller rivers. The length of the specimens was measured, and the sex and gonadal stage were macroscopically identified. The abundance of this species was compared between areas and among months. The diet was analyzed seasonally by the frequency of occurrence, the percent volume, and the index of alimentary importance. P. corvinaeformis occurred in unequal proportions in the two study areas (86% in the Northern area and 14% in the Southern area) and was found most abundant in May 2004, followed by June 2004. The proportion of mature and in-maturation individuals increased gradually from autumn to summer. Nine major groups of food items were recorded in the diet of P. corvinaeformis, and crustaceans comprised five of the categories: unidentified crustacean fragments, zoea larvae, amphipods, copepods and shrimps. In both, fish stomach and intestine, crustacean fragments were the most frequent item. The second most frequent items were shrimp in the stomach, and amphipods in the intestine (mainly represented by their tubes). These results demonstrate that P. corvinaeformis can be considered a carnivore, with a preference on benthic organisms.

This study aimed to comprehensively investigate the population biology of Conodon nobilis (Perciformes, Haemulidae) in Caraguatatuba Bight, southeastern Brazil. Monthly trawls were performed from October 2003 through October 2004 in two areas of the bight that are similar to but distant from each other, South and North. For all specimens, the size was measured and the sex and reproductive stage identified. Abundance and size were compared over areas and months. Body growth parameters were parameterized according to the Von Bertalanffy growth function. The stomach contents were identified and quantified. C. nobilis occurred mainly in the North area and showed an erratic pattern of abundance over time. Several cohorts entered in different periods, but very few large and mature individuals were observed. The results indicate a preference for shallow, ocean-influenced habitats and some degree of segregation between young and older individuals. The species showed a distribution consistent with an r-strategist species, with high abundance and a high growth constant (K = 0.68 year−1 and L max = 34.2 cm). Both the relative length of the digestive tube and the prey items indicated a carnivorous feeding habit; mysids were the main item of the diet throughout the study period, indicating that this grunt is a specialist feeder. Other frequently observed items were amphipods and fish fragments. Ingestion of scales is possibly intentional.

Temporal variation in the structure and dynamics of a population of Tivela mactroides was examined over two periods (2003–2004 and 2007–2008) in the southern part of Caraguatatuba Bay, southeastern Brazil. During the first period from January 2003 to October 2004, sampling was conducted monthly. Sampling in the second period was performed in the summer (January and February 2007 and 2008) and winter (July and August 2007 and 2008). The von Bertalanffy growth function was applied to estimate growth parameters for both periods from length-frequency distributions. Production was determined using the mass-specific growth rate method. Results indicated that the mean abundance (±SE) of T. mactroides varied sharply between the two periods, with an increase of almost 150 times from 2003 to 2004 (8.67·10 2 ± 0.83·10 2 ind m −1 ) to 2007–2008 (1.25·10 5 ± 3.33·10 4 ind m −1 ). The higher abundance in the second period was related to successful recruitment events. While the mean biomass and the production were higher in the second (5.43 ± 0.87 kg AFDM m −1 and 7.89 kg AFDM m −1 yr −1 ) than in the first period (0.18 ± 0.02 kg AFDM m −1 and 0.18 kg AFDM m −1 yr −1 ), lower values of shell length, curvature parameter, asymptotic length of the VBGF, and the growth index phi-prime in 2007–2008 (17.57 ± 1.35 mm; K = 0.40 yr −1 ; L ∞ = 38.60 mm, ϕ ′ = 2.78) than in 2003–2004 (26.21 ± 1.21 mm; K = 1.00 yr −1 ; L ∞ = 40.75 mm, ϕ ′ = 3.22) were related to a strongly density-dependent growth process in the second period. The oscillation in growth observed in the second, but not in the first period also indicates a process of density-dependent growth. These sharp temporal variations in population parameters of T. mactroides suggest the occurrence of density-dependent processes, and reinforce the importance of these processes in structuring sandy-beach populations.

The madamango sea catfish, Cathorops spixii (Siluriformes: Ariidae), is often among the most abundant fishes on the South American Atlantic coast. In the present study, conducted in shallow, non-estuarine coastal areas of Caraguatatuba Bight in southeastern Brazil, collections of this species, the most abundant member of the ichthyofauna, included primarily medium-sized individuals, indicating that the area may play a specific role in their development. Although studies of the local ichthyofauna have been much neglected, the area is economically important and its ecological significance is undervalued. This study primarily treats habitat use by C. spixii, assessing certain population parameters and the dietary composition. Monthly samples were taken from August 2003 through October 2004, with three trawls in two areas, corresponding to depths of about 1 to 4 m. The catfish showed two main peaks of abundance in the area, in April/May and July 2004. A mode around 9 cm SL persisted through time, and the entrance of younger recruits peaked from January to April. The low estimate for body-growth parameters (K = 0.16) corroborates some K-strategist characteristics of the species. The asymptotic length was 27.3 cm SL and total mortality (Z) was 1.01 yr(-1). Cathorops spixii showed an omnivorous feeding habit, preying mainly upon polychaetes, copepods and bivalves, with considerable seasonality in its diet.

This study evaluated the spatio-temporal distribution, reproduction and diet of the catfishes Genidens genidens, G. barbus and Aspistor luniscutis in Caraguatatuba Bay. Their sizes were recorded and the sex and reproductive stage identified. The abundance was compared between areas (South and North) and among months (August 2003 - October 2004). The species had different spatial distributions, allowing them to coexist. The temporal distribution reflected their tendencies to migrate in the reproductive period, as evidenced by the dominance of small immature individuals in the bay. G. genidens tended to reproduce in winter, and A. luniscutis in spring. The diet of G. genidens consisted of crustaceans, mollusks (shells), fish scales, ostracods, and bivalve siphons. G. barbus consumed a high proportion of mysids, followed by fish (bones and scales). For A. luniscutis, the diet was based on fish scales and crustaceans. High quantities of particulate organic matter were observed in the diet of all three species, as previously known for estuarine catfishes. The consumption of fish scales may reflect a lepidophagic habit. A small overlap was observed among the diets, reflecting differences in their environments as well as in the proportions of each item ingested.

In contrast, the southern area is relatively sheltered from wave energy and influenced to a lesser degree by smaller rivers. The fishes' length was measured, and the sex and gonadal stage macroscopically identified. The abundance of this species was compared between areas and among months. The diet was identified and quantified. M. americanus occurred in equal proportions in the two study areas, being most abundant in April 2004, followed by December 2003 and January 2004. The population was dominated by small immature individuals. The few individuals in maturation or mature that were captured showed no seasonal pattern of distribution. This species had a varied diet, feeding on worms (nemerteans, sipunculans and echiurans), mollusks (bivalves and cephalopods), polychaetes, crustaceans and fish. The presence of intact nematodes in the intestine suggests that these are parasites. The results demonstrated that M. americanus has a homogeneous spatial and temporal distribution in Caraguatatuba Bay, being uniformly distributed between the south and north areas as well as across the months. This species can be considered a carnivorous predator, showing a preference for consuming benthic sandy-beach species such as glycerids and other polychaetes, crustaceans, and bivalve siphons.Este estudo teve como objetivo avaliar a distribuição espaço-temporal, biologia populacional e dieta de Menticirrhus americanus da baía de Caraguatatuba. Foram realizadas coletas mensais entre agosto de 2003 a outubro de 2004, utilizando redes de arrasto em duas áreas previamente selecionadas. A área norte é mais expostas à atividade de onda e é influenciada por um rio, constituindo um pequeno estuário. Por outro lado, a área sul é relativamente protegida da energia das ondas e sofre pouca influência dos rios. Os indivíduos coletados foram medidos e identificados macroscopicamente quanto ao sexo e o estádio gonadal. A abundância da espécie foi comparada entre as áreas e entre os meses de coleta. Para a dieta os itens alimentares encontrados foram identificados e quantificados. M. americanus apresentou proporções equivalentes nas duas áreas de estudo, sendo mais abundante em abril de 2004, seguido por dezembro de 2003 e janeiro de 2004. A população região é composta por indivíduos imaturos, e os poucos indivíduos maduros ou em maturação capturados não apresentaram padrão de distribuição ao longo do ano. A espécie mostrou uma dieta variada, alimentando-se de vermes (nemertideos, sipúnculos e equiúros), moluscos (bivalves e cefalópodes), poliquetas, crustáceos e peixes. A presença de nematóides intactos na porção do intestino sugere uma relação parasitária. Os resultados demonstraram que os indivíduos de Menticirrhus americanus estiveram uniformemente distribuídos nas áreas norte e sul e também ao longo do ano. A espécie pode ser considerada predadora e carnívora, mostrando preferência na alimentação por espécies bentônicas de fundos não consolidados, tais como geicerídeos e outros poliquetas, crustáceos e sifões de bivalves.

Ecosystems may reflect environmental changes in many respects, from the debilitation of individuals to alterations in community composition. Equally, population parameters may provide reliable indications of environmental changes. Members of the sciaenid fish genus Stellifer are usually very abundant where they occur, often with two or more species living in sympatry. Here, the population dynamics of three Stellifer species from southeastern Brazil were assessed. Sampling was carried out in shallow marine areas of Caraguatatuba Bay, from August 2003 to October 2004. The species evaluated were Stellifer rastrifer (n=3183), S. brasiliensis (n=357) and S. stellifer (n=116). The area under greater continental influence tended to support more, but smaller individuals. Size variations over time were similar among species and negatively correlated with Krel, which showed smooth fluctuations. The general length-frequency distribution was concentrated between 6.0 and 9.0 cm, and the great majority of females did not present mature gonads during the sampling period. The findings support the existence of a stratification by size for these species, indicating that the area is essential for the development of younger fish. Failure to consider these characteristics for the management of similar areas may have serious implications for these environments.Os ecossistemas podem refletir mudanças ambientais em muitos aspectos, desde o enfraquecimento dos indivíduos até alterações na composição da comunidade. Do mesmo modo, os parâmetros populacionais podem fornecer indicações confiáveis de mudanças ambientais. Sciaenídeos do gênero Stellifer são peixes geralmente muito abundantes e em suas populações é frequente a ocorrência de duas ou mais espécies simpátricas. No presente trabalho, a dinâmica populacional de três espécies de Stellifer do sudeste do Brasil foi avaliada. A amostragem ocorreu em águas rasas das zonas marinhas da Baía de Caraguatatuba, de agosto de 2003 a outubro de 2004. As espécies avaliadas foram Stellifer rastrifer (n = 3.183), S. brasiliensis (n = 357) e S. stellifer (n = 116). Os resultados mostraram que a área sob maior influência continental tende a suportar um número maior de indivíduos menores. Variações de tamanho ao longo do tempo foram semelhantes entre as espécies e negativamente correlacionadas com o Krel, que apresentou flutuações suaves. De modo geral a distribuição de freqüência de comprimento ficou concentrada entre 6,0 e 9,0 cm e para a grande maioria das fêmeas as gônadas se apresentaram imaturas durante o período avaliado. Os resultados suportam a existência de estratificação populacional por tamanho dentro destas espécies, indicando que a área é apropriada para o desenvolvimento de juvenis. A desconsideração de tais características pode acarretar sérias implicações para a gestão dessas áreas.

Sandy beaches in some areas of the São Sebastião Channel in southeastern Brazil have unremittingly undergone a variety of impacts, including the deposition of rock fragments in the intertidal region. Consequently, these environments support a rich fauna comprising both sandy beach and rocky shore organisms. Two rocky shore gastropods, Tegula viridula and Morula nodulosa, are particularly abundant in such environments. An evaluation of the use of microhabitats by these two species revealed that they occupy the available microhabitats in different proportions and the presence of one species is associated with the absence of the other. Morula nodulosa is randomly dispersed, occupying mostly areas with rock fragments covered with sediment and branching brown algae. Tegula viridula shows a clumped dispersion associated with the patchiness of the microhabitats used: the presence of encrusting green algae and absence of sediment and branching brown algae covering the rocks. These findings suggest T. viridula has a lower tolerance than M. nodulosa to sand inundation of the rocky fragments, a stochastic event common to the environment in question.

Coletas intensivas da fauna bentônica marinha da costa norte do Estado de São Paulo, realizadas pelos programas de pesquisa "Fauna de Praia/UNICAMP" de agosto de 1995 a julho de 1997 e "Biota/FAPESP" de março de 2001 a dezembro de 2002 recolheram 2769 exemplares pertencentes a dezesseis espécies, doze gêneros e sete subfamílias. A caracterização de cada espécie foi ampliada com redescrição e ilustrações detalhadas, baseadas nos caracteres da concha. Tabelas comparativas dessas características e uma chave dicotômica de identificação das subfamílias são apresentadas neste estudo. This study concerns the Veneridae bivalves sampled during the research programs "Fauna de Praia/UNICAMP" and "Biota/FAPESP" carried out between August 1995 and July 1997 and between March 2001 and December 2002 respectivelly, in the north coast of São Paulo State, Brazil. A total of 2769 individuals belonging to sixteen species, twelve genera and seven subfamilies were recorded and the characterization of each species improved with detailed redescription and illustrations based on the shell characters. Comparative tables and a identification dichotomic key for subfamilies focused in this study are provided.

Neste trabalho foi realizado o primeiro levantamento da macrofauna de fital da ilha da Queimada Pequena, focalizando o registro das espécies de moluscos, crustáceos e equinodermos associados a Sargassum spp. Para a amostragem da macrofauna associada, foram coletadas aleatoriamente 6 frondes de Sargassum localizadas a 6 m de profundidade, usando-se equipamento de mergulho autônomo. As frondes foram envolvidas em sacos de tecido com malha de 200 mm, mraspadas do substrato, colocadas em recipientes com uma solução de formaldeído 10% e levadas ao laboratório para remoção e identificação da fauna. Quarenta e um táxons foram identificados, havendo dominância de crustáceos peracáridos. Em relação aos Mollusca, a composição específica foi diferente em relação àquela observada na costa norte do estado de São Paulo. Das 16 espécies de moluscos encontradas, apenas os gastrópodes dos gêneros Anachis e Odostomia e os bivalves dos gêneros Musculus e Modiolus são representantes da fauna associada à Sargassum comuns às duas regiões do estado de São Paulo, embora representantes do gênero Fissurela já tenham sido relatados na região de Santos em associação à alga Amphiroa fragilissima. A ocorrência do bivalve exótico Isognomon bicolor também foi confirmada. Os dados obtidos sugerem que a fauna de moluscos pode realmente ser distinta na região norte e sul do estado. No entanto, são necessários estudos mais extensos para confirmar esses resultados e para subsidiar futuras estratégias de manejo dessa unidade de conservação. This work represents the first effort to assess the phytal macrofauna of Queimada Pequena island and was focused in mollusks, crustaceans and echinoderms associated to Sargassum spp. Sampling of the macrofauna was performed by random collections of 6 Sargassum fronds 6 m deep using SCUBA. The fronds were sealed underwater in individual 200 mm mesh bags and detached from the rocky shore. The samples were preserved in recipients in 10% formalin and carried to the laboratory to remove and identify the associated fauna. Forty one taxa were registered, with dominance of peracarid crustaceans. Mollusk composition is different from that of northern São Paulo coast. From the sixteen mollusk species recorded, only the gastropod genera Anachis and Odostomia and the bivalves Musculus and Modiolus were recorded in the Sargassum macrofauna at both coastal regions of São Paulo state, although the genus Fissurela had already been recorded at Santos region associated with the alga Amphiroa fragilissima. The occurrence of the exotic bivalve Isognomon bicolor was also confirmed. Our data suggest differences in the composition of molluskan fauna between southern and northern coasts of the state. Extensive investigations are necessary to confirm these results and to support management strategies in this conservation unit.

Not only seasonality but also taxonomic resolution of prey categories has been shown to affect diet studies. We analyzed the stomach contents of three sympatric species, Stellifer rastrifer, S. brasiliensis and S. stellifer, sampled monthly from August 2003 to October 2004 in Caraguatatuba Bay, southeastern Brazil. General characteristics and similarities among their diets were evaluated by considering high taxonomic ranks of all prey groups, and also the lower taxonomic ranks of the main prey groups. Dietary similarity was relatively high among species and low between seasons, and both evaluation criteria gave the equivalent results. The rare items, however, provided information about resource partition, and the species compositions of the most important groups were apparently good indicators of food availability.

Sandy beaches constitute a key ecosystem and provide socioeconomic goods and services, thereby playing an important role in the maintenance of human populations and in biodiversity conservation. Despite the ecological and social importance of these ecosytems, Brazilian sandy beaches are significantly impacted by human interference, chemical and organic pollution and tourism, as well as global climate change. These factors drive the need to better understand the environmental change and its consequences for biota. To promote the implementation of integrated studies to detect the effects of regional and global environmental change on beaches and on other benthic habitats of the Brazilian coast, Brazilian marine researchers have established The Coastal Benthic Habitats Monitoring Network (ReBentos). In order to provide input for sample planning by ReBentos, we have conducted an intensive review of the studies conducted on Brazilian beaches and summarized the current knowledge about this environment. In this paper, we present the results of this review and describe the physical, biological and socioeconomics features of Brazilian beaches. We have used these results, our personal experience and worldwide literature to identify research projects that should be prioritized in the assessment of regional and global change on Brazilian sandy beaches. We trust that this paper will provide insights for future studies and represent a significant step towards the conservation of Brazilian beaches and their biodiversity. RESUMO As praias brasileiras fornecem bens e serviços ecossistêmicos fundamentais, desempenhando papel importante para a manutenção de populações humanas e para a conservação da biodiversidade. Entretanto, apesar da sua importância ecológica e social, essas praias são amplamente impactadas por alterações humanas, turismo, poluição química e orgânica e mudanças climáticas globais. Esses fatores tornam urgente a melhor percepção e compreensão das mudanças ambientais nas praias brasileiras, assim como de suas consequências na biota. Com o objetivo de promover estudos integrados que possam detectar variações nas características das praias e de outros habitats bentônicos do litoral do Brasil, foi estabelecida a Rede de Monitoramento de Habitats Bentônicos Costeiros (ReBentos). Para fornecer subsídios para o planejamento amostral da ReBentos, realizamos um intenso levantamento sobre os estudos conduzidos nas praias brasileiras e sintetizamos o atual conhecimento relativo a esse ambiente. Os resultados do levantamento são apresentados no presente trabalho e demonstram as principais características físicas, biológicas e socioeconômicas dessas praias. A partir das informações, assim como de nossa experiência e de pesquisas realizadas em diversos países, apontamos estudos e medidas que devem ser considerados prioritários para a avaliação dos efeitos das mudanças regionais e globais sobre as praias brasileiras. Esperamos que esse trabalho possa fornecer subsídios para futuros estudos e que constitua um importante passo em direção à conservação das praias do Brasil e de sua biodiversidade.

The Earth’s climate is changing at a time when society is re-evaluating its relationship with nature and with the services that natural systems provide to human societies. Human actions, which are the major cause of these changes, also reduce the ability of ecological systems to cope with and adapt to the new scenarios. As a result, in the near future only the biota but humanity as a whole will feel the effects of our unsustainable way of life. Among the expected effects, there is the compromising of ecosystem services that are the basis of life and the human economy in diferente parts of the globe.Oceans are central to the climate system, recycling half of the oxygen that we breathe and absorbing half of the carbon dioxide that we emit through the burning of fossil fuels. The oceans hold 97% of the Earth’s water and 95% of all mobile carbon, providing food and livelihoods. Determining the effects of Global Environmental Changes (GECs) on the oceans are critical to understanding what is changing, how is it changing, and how these changes will influence society. Direct and indirect effects of GECs on the marine environment are already perceptible, but others can only be projected based on observations, experimentation and modeling efforts. We have only a rudimentary understanding of the sensitivity, vulnerability and adaptability of natural and managed marine ecosystems to GECs, especially in the South Atlantic.On the Brazilian coast, the existing baseline, monitoring and predictive studies are insufficient to understand the detrimental effects of GECs. The lack of long-term studies of biodiversity has left Brazil far behind in global assessments of the consequences of GECs on coastal ecosystems. In contrast, the Brazilian coastline has vegetated ecosystems (mangroves, salt marshes, and seagrass and rhodolith beds) that together contain hundreds of millions of tons of stored carbon, making Brazil a good place to test new mechanisms to evaluate and conserve blue carbon. To promote the development of a regional science-policy agenda to respond to the urgent demand for sound scientific advice in the face of rapid changes to marine coastal ecosystems, it is necessary to integrate baseline studies to assess the habitat distribution and quality of the ecosystems, as well as the human threats and risks associated with local and regional climate-change scenarios; promote strategic monitoring of physical and biological parameters to fill critical gaps in knowledge; and provide an early warning system of GECs to coastal communities. There is also a need to refine regional and local scenarios of threats related to GECs, to assess the uncertainties, risks and thresholds at the organism and ecosystem levels. It is imperative to integrate Brazilian researchers and institutions in order to promote the consolidation of existing knowledge and the implementation of a broad and continuous observational network. The Network for Monitoring Benthic Coastal Habitats (ReBentos) was created to detect the effects of regional and global environmental changes on benthic habitats, by creating a time-series of data on biodiversity along the Brazilian coast. ReBentos is linked to the Coastal Zones Branch of the Climate Network, hosted by the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation, and the National Institute of Science and Technology for Climate Change. The network was supported in its early phase by the National Counsel of Technological and Scientific Development (CNPq), Sao Paulo Research Foundation (FAPESP), and Coordination for the Improvement of Higher-Education Personnel (CAPES). Currently, ReBentos (http://rebentos.org/) comprises 166 active researchers along the entire Brazilian coast, belonging to 57 educational/research institutions, both national and international, and 17 coastal states.The strategy adopted by ReBentos was to define standardized methods for biodiversity sampling, processing and data analysis, and for measuring abiotic and anthropogenic factors.
