There is a dearth of biomarkers in Idiopathic Inflammatory Myopathies (IIM) to recognize ongoing muscle inflammation and distinguish damage from activity. Since IIM is an autoantibody-mediated disease with tertiary lymphoid organogenesis reported in the diseased muscles, we aimed to study the peripheral blood T helper (Th) subset profiling as a plausible reflection of ongoing muscle inflammation. Fifty-six patients of IIM were compared with 21 healthy controls (HC) and 18 patients with sarcoidosis. Th1, Th17, Th17.1, and Treg cells were identified after stimulation assays (BD Biosciences). Myositis autoantibodies were tested by line immunoassay (Euroimmune, Germany). All Th subsets were elevated in IIM as compared with HC. As compared to HC, PM had elevated Th1 and Treg while Th17 and Th17.1 populations were higher in OM. Patients with sarcoidosis had higher Th1 and Treg but lower Th17 population as compared to IIM {Th1(69.1% vs 49.65%, p < 0.0001), {Treg (12.05% vs 6.2%, p < 0.0001), {Th17 (2.49% vs 4.4%, p < 0.0001)}. Similar results were obtained when sarcoidosis ILD was compared with IIM ILD with a higher Th1 and Treg population but lower Th17 population in the former. No difference in T cell profile was observed after stratification for MSA positivity, type of MSA, clinical features of IIM and disease activity. Th subsets in IIM are distinct from sarcoidosis and HC with a TH17 predominant paradigm, creating a case of exploring Th17 pathway and IL-17 blockers for the treatment of IIM. However, cell profiling cannot distinguish active from inactive disease limiting its predictive potential as a biomarker of activity in IIM. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
Objectives: To analyze the relationship between the joint characteristics of the lower limb and the occurrence of muscle discomfort in the lower extremities of competitive swimmers. Methods: This study involved 157 competitive swimmers (86 men and 71 women); 35 in the infant category (14-15 years), 38 in the junior category (16-20 years), 36 in the absolute category (>21 years), and 48 in the master category (>25 years). The following data were recorded: Seat and Reach Test, Straight Leg Raise Test, hip mobility (flexion-extension and rotation), knee flexion-extension, and ankle dorsiflexion with the knee flexed and extended. These variables were compared across different competition categories and styles. Results: Women showed a greater range of motion in most movements analyzed, except for hip extension. The style with the most knee discomfort is breaststroke. Freestyle is the style that presents the most posterior muscle discomfort, particularly in the gastrocnemius. The absolute and master categories reported more discomfort in the gastrocnemius and plantar muscles. Younger swimmers experienced fewer discomforts. A relationship was observed between lumbar and hamstring discomfort with reduced lumbar flexibility. Posterior muscle discomfort was mainly observed in swimmers with short hamstrings. Swimmers with plantar muscle discomfort had less ankle dorsiflexion. Conclusions: Swimmers participating in this study who reported muscle discomfort during swimming showed greater shortening of the hamstring and gastrocnemius muscles along with less ankle dorsiflexion compared to swimmers without discomfort.

- Abstract
The biopsychosocial model integrates the biological, psychological and social factors that intervene in the disease. Primary Health Care (PHC), in order to increase the level of health of the population, is aligned with this approach promoting health, preventing and treating disease; and recovering its consequences through rehabilitation. Musculoskeletal diseases are the second cause of disability in the world and have a significant impact on society. The early management of these disorders from PHC has the potential to reduce disability and improve people's quality of life. Primary care physiotherapy units are responsible for providing community-based rehabilitation services in the Public Health System of Castilla y León (Spain). Primary care physiotherapists perform a functional assessment of patients, set person-centered goals, design and implement physiotherapy treatments, and also monitor the evolution of the disease. All these actions originate from the physiotherapy assessment, in which the description of the patient's functional status is essential. The International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) is the framework established by the World Health Organization to describe functioning and disability and to integrate the biopsychosocial approach into health care. The use of the ICF is a challenge at the clinical level due to its exhaustiveness. For this reason, abbreviated ICF versions (known as ICF core sets) have been developed to describe the essential aspects of functioning in certain health conditions, patients and/or healthcare contexts. The ICF core set for post-acute musculoskeletal conditions covers the spectrum of disorders that are usually addressed in the primary care physiotherapy units. Therefore, the validation of this ICF-based tool could be an adequate starting point to incorporate the ICF in physiotherapy assessments. The validation of ICF core sets is based on a scientific process that contemplates the perspectives, El modelo biopsicosocial integra los factores biológicos, psicológicos y sociales que intervienen sobre la enfermedad.

- Abstract
Background: The scarce studies regarding the non-professional caregivers health have focused more on the repercussions of care on their mental health than on the study of musculoskeletal injuries (MSI), despite the fact that care can cause the development of MSI, due to the personal characteristics of the caregiver or the environment that surrounds them. Objective: To identify the factors associated with MSI in elderly caregivers in a second-level hospital in Mexico and to know its prevalence. Material and methods: Analytical observational study; a questionnaire was administered to 283 elderly caregivers and their dependents. The survey included 62 variables related to environmental factors, factors inherent to care, and personal factors, in addition to the site of MSI; statistical analysis was descriptive and analytical (multivariate model). Results: Prevalence of MSI in older adult caregivers was 34.6%. Main factors associated were being female, having some comorbidity, duration of care greater than 13 hours a day for more than 13 months, a physical area reduced to provide care and social isolation. These factors increased between 1.9 and 12 the risk of suffering an MSI. Musculoskeletal injuries occurred mainly at the lumbar level of the spine. Conclusions: This is the first report in Mexico that identifies the prevalence of MSI in older adult caregivers and the factors associated with them. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: To evaluate the effects of photobiomodulation therapy in redox status, angiogenesis marker – vascular endothelial growth factor – and in the functional recovery in denervated muscle. Methods: A total of 32 female Wistar rats underwent a crush injury and were randomly divided into four groups: Light Emitting Diode Group 2 and Control Group 2 (muscle collected 2 days after injury), and Light Emitting Diode Group 21 and Control Group 21 (muscle collected 21 days afterinjury). Light Emitting Diode Group 2 and Light Emitting Diode Group 21 received two and ten light emitting diode applications (630±20nm, 9J/cm2, 300mW), respectively, and the Control Group 2 and Control Group 21 did not receive any treatment. The function was evaluated by grasping test at four moments (pre-injury, 2, 10 and 21 post-injury days). The flexor digitorum muscle was collected for analysis of immunolocalization of vascular endothelial growth factor and redox parameters. Results: Functional improvement was observed at the second and tenth post-injury day in treated groups compared to control (p<0.005). The muscle tissue of treated groups presented higher immunohistochemical expression of vascular endothelial growth factor. Photobiomodulation therapy decreased the oxidative damage to lipid in Light Emitting Diode Group 2 compared to Control Group 2 (p=0.023) in the denervated muscle. Conclusion: Photobiomodulation therapy accelerated the functional recovery, increased angiogenesis and reduced lipid peroxidation in the denervated muscle at 2 days after injury. Introduction: Infrared thermography (IT) is an imaging technique that detects heat radiation emitted by an object and collects it to convert it into temperature values. In sports, it is used to identify damage to musculoskeletal structures based on the variation of body temperature in affected anatomical areas. Objective: To assess the effectiveness of IT as a tool to detect damaged muscles after running a marathon. Materials and methods: 17 runners were assessed before and after running a marathon (42.196 km) using thermographic equipment. Results: Statistically significant temperature differences were found before and after running a marathon. There was a difference between previous and posterior measurement >1°C in the vastus lateralis, vastus medialis, rectus femoris and adductor of the dominant leg, which, based on clinical parameters, indicates damage in these muscles. Increases in temperature were heterogeneous among anatomical areas. Conclusions: IT is an effective tool for detecting damaged muscle areas in runners after participating in a marathon.

Background: urinary incontinence (UI) is the involuntary loss of urine, a problem that affects the quality of life of those who suffer from it. This condition shows functional clinical manifestations of the vesico-sphincter complex that would lead to pelvic floor muscle contraction disorders. General objective: determine pelvic floor contraction disorders in women with urinary incontinence who attend the Health Center #3. Methodology: a descriptive, prospective cross-sectional study was carried out at the Health Center #3 in women with SUI; data collection will be performed with the clinical history, ICIQ-SF questionnaire and Kegel device. The statistics of central tendency, dispersion, absolute frequency, percentage, Spearman's rho for correlation, were analyzed in the SPSS V25 program; for the preparation of tables and graphs Microsoft Excel 2016. Results:16 users were evaluated, whose average age was 47.81 years, an average of 3 deliveries, with 49 births, of which eutocic delivery was more frequent. The average contraction speed of the pelvic floor muscles was 0,631 mmHg, and the grip capacity was 1,498 mmHg. There was significance (<0.05) between the speed of muscle contraction, the degree of SUI and dystocia, respectively. There was no significance between contraction speed, age and number of deliveries, respectively. Conclusion: characteristics of pre and postpartum, the use of forceps, among other antecedents, compromises the proper functioning of the pelvic muscles, but there is little research regarding pressure transducer devices and there are no standardized values that categorize the condition based on a precise value.

Objective: Assessment of force and angular position based on the analysis of electromyographic signals acquired from the biceps and triceps during the elbow flexion-extension. The idea is to compare the computational algorithms V − Order, WaveLength, Mean Absolute Value, Wavelength, and the Q1 value. Materials and Methods: An experiment with 15 volunteers was carried out. We used weights of 0, 0.5, y 1 kg. We extracted the signal characteristics using the algorithms mentioned above to measure the force. After, we calculated the angular position using a low-pass filter applied to the force signal. We measured the angular position with a NOTCH commercial sensor to validate the algorithms. Then, we evaluated the correlation coefficient and compared the results with those of the algorithm that behaves better. Results: The acquired signals show that the biceps’ signal has a greater amplitude compared to the triceps’ signal. Furthermore, the Q1 algorithm has lower noise levels. Therefore, it is employed to acquire the force and the angular position. As main results, we found a mean correlation coefficient of 72,3% for 1 kg and 60,9% for 0 kg, comparing the angular position calculated with the angular position from the NOTCH sensors. Conclusion: The measurement of force and angular position allows the development of control systems for biomechatronic devices intended to support rehabilitation processes and evaluation of the evolution of a patient.

- Abstract
In weightlifting, the transversus abdominis is a very important musculature due to its participation in free load exercises, since it accomplishes a stabilizing function. This function is compromised when subjected to submaximal loads, which is why this population uses a weightlifting belt to counter it. The information on the evaluation of this musculature in this specific group is limited. The Sahrmann test proves to be a useful tool in the evaluation of TrA. To determine the stabilizing capacity of the Transversus abdominis through the Sahrmann Central Stability Test in weightlifting athletes from the FDA. Descriptive, cross-sectional study, carried out on FDA athletes. For data collection, a registration form was used and for evaluation the Sahrmann Central Stability Test together with the Chattanooga Stabilizer Pressure Biofeedback device. The tabulation and analysis of the data required the GNU PSPP v1.6.2 and Microsoft Excel 2016 programs. The information was stored in a database and the results were expressed in tables and graphs. It was found that 66.6% of the studied population presents a deficient stabilizing capacity since they do not reach levels greater than or equal to 3 in the Sahrmann Central Stability Test, in addition, it was evidenced that athletes use the belt more than 5 times a month and their sports practice time is greater than 18 months.

Introduction: Differences in the lateral and medial portions from quiadriceps muscular activation during the jump execution can become a neuromuscular risk factor raising knee dynamic valgus, raising the risk for ACL injury. Objective: To determine the lateral and medial vastus difference activation using surface electromyography during single-leg jump in the sagittal and frontal plane in women athletes. Materials and methods: quantitative, cross-sectional study. A 64 female athletes study participation, testing antropometric mesures, vertical and lateral single-leg jump tests with the evaluation of vastus medialis and lateral electromyographic activation during the tests, and iliotibial band flexibility assessment. Results: it was found statistically significant relationship (p≤0.05) between body mass index, fat percentage and vertical single-leg jumps power. Statistical significance was found (p≤0.05), with greater activation of the lateral vastus in the right lower limb vertical jump and in the lateral jump in both lower limbs. Conclusion: Athletes presented differences in quadriceps activation, being higher lateral vastus activation in most of unipodal jumps, both in the sagittal and frontal plane; this may increase the risk for suffering knee injuries in sport practice. ABSTRACT Systematic studies involving technologies such as surface electromyography (sEMG) may provide important data that enable veterinarians to recognize musculoskeletal, ligamentous, and neurological alterations. The aim of this study was to describe the gait cycle phases and the timing of muscle activation in healthy Boxer dogs during gait by means of sEMG. The gait cycle of seven Boxer dogs was evaluated and sEMG was recorded from the biceps brachii, triceps brachii, brachiocephalic, rectus femoris, semitendinosus, semimembranosus, and superficial gluteal muscles of the right hemibody. Circular monopolar Ag/AgCl electrodes were attached to the mean point between the motor point and the muscle insertion. The electromyographic signals were collected by an active interface with 20-fold gain in a bipolar differential configuration using a 16-channel signal conditioner (EMG Systems Brasil), while the dogs walked on a treadmill at a speed of 2m/s. Pearson's correlation was used for the statistical analysis. A positive correlation was found between the rectus femoris and biceps brachii (r= 0.81); superficial gluteal and triceps brachii (r= 0.69); semitendinosus-semimembranosus and biceps brachii (r= 0.76); and rectus femoris and semitendinosus and semimembranosus muscle groups (r=0.99). The biceps brachii and brachiocephalic muscles work in tandem to position the thoracic limb during the gait cycle, while the semitendinosus-semimembranosus group flexes the knee and, simultaneously with the quadriceps that flexes the hip, prevents the contact of the pelvic limb with the ground during the swing phase. The body is propelled forward by the triceps brachii muscle, which extends the elbow and flexes the shoulder at the final contact, while the superficial gluteal muscle extends the hip.

ABSTRACT Scoliosis is characterized by three-dimensional changes of the spine and is estimated to be present in 4% of the population worldwide. The most common form is the adolescent idiopathic. The purpose of this study is to identify the major muscle abnormalities found in patients with adolescent idiopathic scoliosis through a literature review. We conducted an electronic search of the national databases PubMed, Lilacs, PEDro, and EMBASE using the keywords "scoliosis", "biomechanics", "exercise", "physical therapy specialty", "idiopathic", and "muscles", from January 2003 to April 2015. The most relevant articles in English, Portuguese and Spanish were selected by title and abstract. It was also performed a manual search of the references of the selected articles. From a total of 4,319 articles, 11 were selected. We conclude that individuals with AIS have changes in the paraspinal muscles, with a difference in activation between the concave and convex sides, suggesting an increase in EMG activity on the convex side, although there is still no consensus among the authors.

The active skeletal muscle and the maintenance of muscle mass are essential for good health, wellness and disease prevention and treatment. The muscle as an endocrine organ capable of synthesizing myokines, has been documented recently. These peptides are secreted as a response to muscular contractions induced by exercise, and can develop molecular communication with other tissues, improving cardiovascular, metabolic, and mental health. The endocrine function of a muscle continues to be in a constant investigation; however, knowledge up to date urge us to continue promoting physical activity. Additionally, the extended knowledge of myokins is useful to prescribe individualized physical exercise programs to each patient.

Muscle tone refers to the state of physiological tension that muscles constantly present, in order to keep these tissues active without generating movement, considered as the intrinsic state of tension at rest. Within it, its properties must be considered, such as stiffness, elasticity or relaxation time, which can characterize pathologies of diverse clinical importance. To date, palpation has been the most followed methodology for its measurement, since technologies such as elastography and tensiomyography require more specific equipment and knowledge. In humans, there are scales that allow subjective assessment of muscle tone; however, they have no validation or application in veterinary medicine. Hence the need to find a way to achieve a quantitative assessment of muscle tone. The myotonometer; MyotonPRO allows the mechanical properties of muscle tone to be translated into numerical values through oscillations produced by a built-in probe. With this base, our objective is to demonstrate the reproducibility and repeatability of this technique in the lateral area of the horse's neck. To do this, we used 9 horses contained in a rack at two winds and set 5 anatomical reference points, repeating the measurements 3 times in one day and 3 times a couple of days later. From the results obtained, it can be concluded that there is good intra-observer repeatability and, although with a lower ICC (intraclass coefficient), good reproducibility despite differences between the sides of the neck. This statement should motivate more in-depth studies to achieve greater certainty in the application of MyotonPRO in horses for a more personalized and effective rehabilitation programming and follow-up in these animals.

Background: Taking into account that the constant semi-flexion posture of hockey could cause significant muscle shortening and decreased joint mobility in the hip that, consequently, could lead the player to suffer postural alterations and discomfort or injuries associated with such shortening, it is important to propose a preventive work protocol that helps maintain the physical well-being of the players and avoid any injury that may take him Objetive: Explain the importance of carrying out preventive work on hip muscles in hockey players in order to reduce or prevent muscle cuts that result in sports injuries. Materials and methods: Descriptive-longitudinal approach. The population is made up of all 20 players who are part of the top squad "A" of hockey at Universitario Rugby Club who held the preseason, played the "Preparation Tournament" and are currently playing the "Honor Tournament". The variable is qualitative and quantitative where data were collected through a survey and two physical examinations of the hip muscles, one before the implementation of the preventive protocol and another after two months of carrying out the work. Results: The progress of the hip muscle shortening of 20 players from the Universitario Rugby Club was analyzed by carrying out 9 tests carried out in two instances. We were able to notice progress reflected in the reduction of positive results to shortening in each kinetic test carried out and even players who continue with positive results in some tests have managed to reduce their shortening. Conclusion: There are postural alterations as a result of muscle shortening of the hip muscles caused by the semi-flexion posture of hockey. We were able to demonstrate the effectiveness of a preventive protocol of joint mobility and muscle activation that stimulates the elasticity of muscles and tendons. Introduction Mountaineering is a very healthy reasoning sport event that focuses on intelligence and physical strength, climbing rock walls with the hands. Objective Observe the specific indicators of upper limb strength in mountaineering. Methods Athletes from a rock-climbing training team were selected as the research subjects (N=12, M=6). Before the formal experimental test, the subjects performed 30-minute warm-up exercises, including stretching and jogging. Results The negative correlation between sports performance and maximum heart rate after a 15-meter speed climb indicates that the higher the heart rate mobilized in sport, the better the exercise performance. Similarly, was observed the positive correlation between athletic performance and blood lactate at 3 minutes after a 15-meter climb, i.e., the higher the blood lactate during exercise, the worse the athletic performance. Conclusions The higher the climbing speed and the lower the blood lactate, the better the athletic performance. Thus, athletes with high training levels and solid athletic ability can achieve a higher maximum heart rate level during exercise. Evidence Level II; Therapeutic Studies - Investigating the result. Objective: To evaluate the effects of right sciatic nerve compression and cryotherapy on muscle tissue. Methods: We used 42 male Wistar rats, subdivided in the following Groups Control, Injury 3, Injury 8 and Injury 15 submitted to nerve compression and euthanized in the 3rd, 8th and 15th day after surgery. The Cryotherapy Injury 3 was entailed treatment with cryotherapy by immersion of the animal in recipient for 20 minutes during 1 day, then animals were euthanized at the 3rd day after surgery, and the Cryotherapy Injury 8 and the Cryotherapy Injury 15 was treated for 6 days, and euthanized at the 8th and 15th day after surgery. Functional evaluation was performed by the grasping strength of the right pelvic limb. The right tibialis anterior muscles were evaluated for mass, smaller diameter and cross-sectional area. In the Cryotherapy Injury 8 and the Cryotherapy Injury 15 groups, the hydroxyproline was dosed in the right soles. Results: In the compression there was a significant difference in the Injury Groups compared with the Control Group (p<0.05). In the smaller diameter, the compression in Control Group was higher than Injury 8 (p=0.0094), Injury 15 (p=0.002) and Cryotherapy Injury 15 (p<0.001) groups. The comparison between groups with euthanasia in the same post-operative period, a significant difference (p=0.0363) was seen in day 8th after surgery, and this result in Cryotherapy Injury Group was greater than Injury Group. In the fiber area, Control Group was also higher than the Injury 8 (p=0.0018), the Injury 15 (p<0.001) and the Cryotherapy Injury 15 (p<0.001). In hydroxyproline, no significant difference was seen between groups. Conclusion: Nerve damage resulted in decreased muscle strength and trophism, the cryotherapy delayed hypotrophy, but this effect did not persist after cessation of treatment. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction There are many drawbacks in sports, one of the main problems being injuries. Objective This work aimed to study the effect of prolonged basketball practice and associated sports injuries on electrophysiological indicators about the functional state of the neuromuscular apparatus in specialized athletes. Methods A study was conducted in which 14 basketball players participated voluntarily: 7 basketball players aged 17 to 23 years with first category sports qualifications, relatively healthy, with a history of knee and ankle injuries, and seven non-athletes with no history of injuries. Psychophysiological and electrophysiological methods were used for the study, designed to diagnose strength and endurance, measure rhythmic dynamics in hand movements, evaluate the mobility of neural processes, and the functional state of the central nervous system and processes in the central nervous system. Results It was established that regular sports training leads to morphological and functional changes in the neuromuscular system. Conclusion Due to repeated injuries, basketball players experience a decrease in the conduction velocity of the electrical pulse in the neural fiber pathway and in the level of reflex excitability in the neuronal motor ensemble of the lumbosacral segments of the spinal cord that innervate the bilateral muscles of the lower limbs; a weakening of the nervous system resistance, mobility of the nervous processes, deterioration of the functional state of the central nervous system and analyzers was noted. Evidence level II; Therapeutic studies - outcomes research.
