The aim of the article is to observe how countries that have faced armed conflicts in the recent decades are perceived in a corpus of Czech, mostly journalism texts. We focus on eight countries where soldiers of the Czech Republic or the former Czechoslovak Republic have been deployed on the basis of a mandate after 1989 (Afghanistan, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Iraq, Kosovo, Kuwait, Mali, and Yugoslavia). The picture of each country is determined via a quantitative, corpus-based approach. First, a frequency analysis is conducted in an attempt to show whether texts tend to mention some conflict-affected countries more frequently than others. Second, a collocation analysis is carried out to identify the stereotypes associated with the studied countries. The results show very different perceptions of the states, ranging from those connected solely to warfare (Iraq, Afghanistan) to those that are nowadays mostly seen as holiday destinations (Croatia). Moreover, some countries do not seem to be paid much attention at all (Mali). The outcome of the research may be of use for journalists, political scholars, and geographers and provides the respective disciplines with a new methodological approach. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The study introduces OnomOs, a new corpus of Czech texts with annotation of proper names. The corpus was compiled by onomasticians from the Department of Czech Language, Faculty of Arts, University of Ostrava, and made available by the Institute of the Czech National Corpus, Faculty of Arts, Charles University in Prague. The paper briefly discusses the content and structure of the cor- pus, the selection of texts for inclusion, and the onomastic-geographical classification of the iden- tified names. The text consists chiefly of three preparatory analyses, which focus on the most fre- quent surnames, collocations found in Western and Eastern countries in the pre-1989 period, and the declension patterns of three types of onyms. The aim of this paper is to present the potential of quantitative methods for the research of proper names (mostly personal and place names) as units operating in Czech texts. Three case studies treat particular research topics on the background of the development of Czech onomastics in the 20th century and in the first decades of the 21st century. They are aimed at 1) quantification of relational (semantic) patterns; 2) collocation analysis; 3) morphological categories of proper names. The study investigates the possible identity of Vladimír Vašek (= Petr Bezruč), author of Silesian Songs and The Blue Underwing, and Pavel Hrzánský, who authored Poems: Opus no. 5, a book of verse bearing some similarities to the future development of Vašek's poetic self. The research is carried out via a novel authorship attribution method based on the investigation of numbers and numerals. This new investigation is complemented by the standardly employed MFC and MFW analyses. All the inquiries corroborate that Vašek's authorship of Hrzánský's poems is implausible. If the Hrzánský-Bezruč link is to be maintained in literary scholarship, we need to admit an extreme stylistic transformation between the two personae. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The paper focuses on the frequency and collocation analyses of Česko (“Czechia”), the short, geographical name of our country, in the opinion journalism section of the eight-version SYN corpus, which comprises texts from the period of 1990−2018. Within the scope of the research, the period was divided into several sections, which are delineated by the breakthrough political and cultural events (the Czech Republic entering NATO, the Czech Republic entering the EU, climax of the first season of the Pop Idol-based contest Czechia Is Looking for a SuperStar, etc.). The frequency analysis is based on the relativization via i.p.m.; the collocability force is counted on the grounds of the logDice index, which is easy to be interpreted linguistically, and independent of the corpus size. The goal of the study is to capture basic motivations which led to the popularisation of the name and its expansion in the given discourse (e.g. the influences of other one-word names of states, sport commentaries, popular contests, and generation change). It is possible to sum up that the Česko name is employed in a variety of contexts, and its usage can be seen as unmarked. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The paper focuses on the analysis of a sample of military language from the stylometric perspective. The corpus is the chronicle of the 8th Czech Armed Forces Guard Company, which operated at the Bagram Air Field base (BAF). We work on the assumptions that in the corpus, there will be (A) a prominent presence of military slang; (B) a high pro portion of abbreviations; (C) frequent linguistic devices ex pressing mutuality and collectiveness of the soldiers' enterprise. The texts were subjected to keyword and collocation analyses; these determined severalstylistic features of theirs (such as use of English-based expressions, pro to col-like language, or idiosyncratic collocations), which testify to the multifaceted character of the military chronicle genre [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article will focus on H. Beam Piper's classical story Omnilingual (1957). This Piper-esque writing has entered the records of the science fiction prose for the 'Martian' periodic table of elements, being synonymous with a scientific 'Rosetta-like stone' in the decipherment area. The work, while having a search potential in text analysis and stylistics, may add in a parallel fashion some lustre to the validity of science as a communicative channel in non-conventional circumstances. In order to capture stylistic features of the novelette, a number of quantitative indicators are drawn in. The study will concentrate on vocabulary-richness indexes (TTR, entropy, RR, RRMc, G, ATL, HL, MATTR, and Lambda), a complex assessment of activity (Busemann's coefficient, the chi-square testing classification), and a sketch of the Belza chain analysis. The paper focuses on analysing the use of adnominals in the selected fifteen sonnet authors of the 19th- and 20th-century Czech literature. The poets have been selected so as to represent the main literary schools of the period, the main criterion of their ranking being their dates of birth. The investigation treats both general trends (changing numbers of adnominals in various eras, the measure of ornamentality in particular authors), and specific, Czech-based issues (premodification and postmodification, attributes and genitives). The goal of the paper is threefold: first, there is an endeavour to determine some principles of the development of the sonnet tradition in the Czech literature; second, some micro-analyses of the poets are provided, including contrastive views of various writing tactics employed by them; and third, one way of measuring ornamentality has been sketched, as the tool may be of help in unearthing stylistic preferences of different authors. This study is focused on the survey of a non-standardized (popular) toponymy of the fifth district of the municipal borough of Ostrava-Poruba, which was established, as a prototypical socialistic housing estate, from the 1940s to the 1980s. The green-field establishment of a self-sufficient city, the yard-based shaping of the construction, and the way the standardized toponymical structure was politically charged (commemorative names) became the main triggers and background of the development of popular urban names; these are studied from two different social groups' points of view. The research started in a family whose three generations had been closely linked to the district; this survey was followed by another one, focusing on pupils of the local elementary school.
