1. In-hospital dynamics of glucose, blood pressure and temperature predict outcome in patients with acute ischaemic stroke

Abstract

Introduction: We aimed to assess alterations in glucose, blood pressure and temperature in acute ischaemic stroke and investigate their association with early all-cause mortality and functional outcome. Patients and methods: We studied all consecutive acute ischaemic stroke patients admitted in 2001–2010 to the Acute Stroke Unit, at Alexandra University Hospital, in Athens. Serial measurements were performed in the first seven days post-stroke and different parameters have been estimated: mean daily values, variability, subject-specific baseline levels and rate of change in serial measurements. Cox-proportional-hazards-model analysis and logistic-regression analysis were applied to investigate the association between these parameters and all-cause mortality and functional outcome after adjustment for known confounders of stroke outcome. Results: In 1271 patients (mean age 72.3 ± 11.2 years), after adjusting for confounders, baseline glucose levels (HR: 1.005, 95%CI: 1.001–1.01; p = 0.017), variability of systolic BP (SBP) as estimated by standard deviation (HR: 1.028, 95%CI: 1.01–1.048; p = 0.005), the baseline temperature (HR: 2.758, 95%CI: 2.067–3.68; p < 0.001) and the rate of temperature change (HR: 1.841, 95%CI: 1.616–2.908; p < 0.001) were independently associated with all-cause mortality within three months. Poor functional outcome was associated with subject-specific baseline values of temperature (OR: 1.743; 95%CI: 1.076–2.825; p = 0.024), the rate of SBP (OR: 1.159; 95% CI: 1.047–1.280; p = 0.004) and temperature change (OR: 1.402; 95% CI: 1.061–1.853; p = 0.018). Discussion: The main strength of our study is that we analysed simultaneously three parameters and we used four different variables for each parameter of interest. Conclusion: Baseline glucose levels, variability of SBP and baseline temperature and its rate of change are independent predictors of all-cause mortality. Baseline values of temperature and the rate of changes in SBP and temperature are independent predictors of poor functional outcome. © 2018, © European Stroke Organisation 2018.

Abstract

We present a measurement of the longitudinal spin asymmetry A|| in photoproduction of pairs of hadrons with high transverse momentum pT. Data were accumulated by the HERMES experiment using a 27.5 GeV polarized positron beam and a polarized hydrogen target internal to the HERA storage ring. For h^+h^- pairs with _(pT)^(h1)>1.5GeV/c and _(pT)^(h2)>1.0GeV/c, the measured asymmetry is A_(||) = -0.28±0.12(stat)±0.02(syst). This negative value is in contrast to the positive asymmetries typically measured in deep inelastic scattering from protons, and is interpreted to arise from a positive gluon polarization.

Abstract

Cross section ratios for deep-inelastic scattering from 14N and 3He with respect to 2H have been measured by the HERMES experiment at DESY using a 27.5 GeV positron beam. The data cover a range in the Bjorken scaling variable x between 0.013 and 0.65, while the negative squared four-momentum transfer Q^2 varies from 0.5 to 15 GeV^2. The data are compared to measurements performed by NMC, E665, and SLAC on 4He and 12C, and are found to be different for x < 0.06 and Q^2 < 1.5 GeV^2. The observed difference is attributed to an A-dependence of the ratio R = sigma_L / sigma_T of longitudinal to transverse deep-inelastic scattering cross sections at low x and low Q^2.

Abstract

Exclusive incoherent electroproduction of the ρ0(770) meson from 1H, 2H, 3He, and 14N targets has been studied by the HERMES experiment at squared four-momentum transfer Q^2>0.4 GeV^2 and positron energy loss ν from 9 to 20 GeV. The ratio of the 14N to 1H cross sections per nucleon, known as the nuclear transparency, was found to decrease with increasing coherence length of quark-antiquark fluctuations of the virtual photon. The data provide clear evidence of the interaction of the quark-antiquark fluctuations with the nuclear medium.

Abstract

Spin-polarised atomic hydrogen is used as a gaseous polarised proton target in high energy and nuclear physics experiments operating with internal beams in storage rings. When such beams are intense and bunched, this type of target can be depolarised by a resonant interaction with the transient magnetic field generated by the beam bunches. This effect has been studied with the HERA positron beam in the HERMES experiment at DESY. Resonances have been observed and a simple analytic model has been used to explain their shape and position. Operating conditions for the experiment have been found where there is no significant target depolarisation due to this effect., REVTEX, 6 pages, 5 figures

The data were taken with the 27.6 GeV longitudinally polarised positron beam at HERA incident on a longitudinally polarised pure hydrogen gas target internal to the storage ring. Abstract

The HERMES experiment is collecting data on inclusive and semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering of polarised positrons from polarised targets of H, D, and He. These data give information on the spin structure of the nucleon. This paper describes the forward angle spectrometer built for this purpose. The spectrometer includes numerous tracking chambers (micro-strip gas chambers, drift and proportional chambers) in front of and behind a 1.3 T.m magnetic field, as well as an extensive set of detectors for particle identification (a lead-glass calorimeter, a pre-shower detector, a transition radiation detector, and a threshold Cherenkov detector). Two of the main features of the spectrometer are its good acceptance and identification of both positrons and hadrons, in particular pions. These characteristics, together with the purity of the targets, are allowing HERMES to make unique contributions to the understanding of how the spins of the quarks contribute to the spin of the nucleon., 37 pages, 32 figures, 4 tables

Abstract

Absolute differential cross sections for the threshold electrodisintegration of the deuteron with good resolution were measured at a laboratory scattering angle of 160\ifmmode^\circ\else\textdegree\fi{} for five values of ${Q}^{2}$ ranging from 8.66 to $42.4{\mathrm{fm}}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}2}.$ Comparisons of the data averaged over ${E}_{\mathrm{np}}$ from 0 to 3 MeV and from 0 to10 MeV are made with nonrelativistic meson exchange calculations. These calculations are sensitive to the nucleon electromagnetic form factors, nucleon-nucleon potential, and relativistic effects. The data are also compared with a hybrid quark-hadron model calculation that describes the deuteron as a six-quark cluster for the short range part of the interaction. Some of these calculations can describe the data reasonably well over certain ranges of ${Q}^{2};$ however, none of these calculations can accurately describe the data over the entire measured ${Q}^{2}$ range.

Abstract

We have measured the proton and deuteron spin structure functions g[sup p][sub 1] and g[sup d][sub 1] in the region of the nucleon resonances for W2 < 5GeV2 and Q2(similar, equals)0.5 and Q2(similar, equals)1.2GeV2 by inelastically scattering 9.7 GeV polarized electrons off polarized 15NH3 and 15ND3 targets. We observe significant structure in g[sup p][sub 1] in the resonance region. We have used the present results, together with the deep-inelastic data at higher W2, to extract Gamma (Q2)(equivalent)01 g1(x,Q2)dx. This is the first information on the low-Q2 evolution of Gamma toward the Gerasimov-Drell-Hearn limit at Q2 = 0.

Abstract

The neutron longitudinal and transverse asymmetries ${A}_{1}^{n}$ and ${A}_{2}^{n}$ have been extracted from deep inelastic scattering of polarized electrons by a polarized $^{3}\mathrm{He}$ target at incident energies of 19.42, 22.66, and 25.51 GeV. The measurement allows for the determination of the neutron spin structure functions ${g}_{1}^{n}(x, {Q}^{2})$ and ${g}_{2}^{n}(x, {Q}^{2})$ over the range $0.03lxl0.6$ at an average ${Q}^{2}$ of 2 ${(\mathrm{G}\mathrm{e}\mathrm{V}/\mathit{c})}^{2}$. The data are used for the evaluation of the Ellis-Jaffe and Bjorken sum rules. The neutron spin structure function ${g}_{1}^{n}(x, {Q}^{2})$ is small and negative within the range of our measurement, yielding an integral $\ensuremath{\int}{0.03}^{0.6}{g}_{1}^{n}(x)\mathrm{dx}=\ensuremath{-}0.028\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.006 (\mathrm{stat})\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.006 (\mathrm{syst})$. Assuming Regge behavior at low $x$, we extract ${\ensuremath{\Gamma}}_{1}^{n}=\ensuremath{\int}{0}^{1}{g}_{1}^{n}(x)\mathrm{dx}=\ensuremath{-}0.031\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.006 (\mathrm{stat})\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.009 (\mathrm{syst})$. Combined with previous proton integral results from SLAC experiment E143, we find ${\ensuremath{\Gamma}}_{1}^{p}\ensuremath{-}{\ensuremath{\Gamma}}_{1}^{n}=0.160\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.015$ in agreement with the Bjorken sum rule prediction ${\ensuremath{\Gamma}}_{1}^{p}\ensuremath{-}{\ensuremath{\Gamma}}_{1}^{n}=0.176\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.008$ at a ${Q}^{2}$ value of 3 ${(\mathrm{G}\mathrm{e}\mathrm{V}/\mathit{c})}^{2}$ evaluated using ${\ensuremath{\alpha}}_{s}=0.32\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.05$.

Abstract

The inclusive A(e,e′) cross section for x≃1 was measured on ^2H, C, Fe, and Au for momentum transfers Q^2 from 1 to 6.8 (GeV/c)^2. The scaling behavior of the data was examined in the region of transition from y scaling to x scaling. Throughout this transitional region, the data exhibit ξ scaling, reminiscent of the Bloom-Gilman duality seen in free nucleon scattering.

Abstract

We have measured proton and deuteron virtual photon-nucleon asymmetries A{sup p}{sub 2} and A{sup d}{sub 2} and structure functions g{sup p}{sub 2} and g{sup d}{sub 2} over the range 0.03 < x < 0.8 and 1.3 < Q{sup 2} < 10 (GeV/c){sup 2} by inelastically scattering polarized electrons off polarized ammonia targets. Results for A{sub 2} are significantly smaller than the positivity limit (sqrt)R for both targets. Within experimental precision the g{sub 2} data are well described by the twist-2 contribution, g{sup ww}{sub 2}. Twist-3 matrix elements have been extracted and are compared to theoretical predictions.

16. A normative study of the color trails test in the greek population

Abstract

The Color Trails Test (CTT) is a neuropsychological test that measures perceptual tracking and sustained and divided attention. Recently, its use has been increased in neurological diseases such as Alzheimer's disease, brain injury, and subclinical infarction. The aim of the present study was to provide normative data for the CTT in the Greek population. A total of 321 native Greek speakers with various professional backgrounds took part in the study. Exclusion criteria involved the existence of neurological and psychiatric diseases, history of alcohol and/or drug dependence, traumatic brain injury, and a Mini-Mental State Examination score below 27. Our results showed that age and education are important factors to consider for the interpretation of scores in all CTT variables. Older participants took more time and exhibited more errors, more near-misses, and more prompts compared with younger participants. Also, more-educated participants took less time, made fewer errors, had fewer near-misses, and rewired fewer prompts compared with less educated participants. CTT is a promising tool for the measurement of attention in the Greek population. Further research is needed to use this test in Greek patients with various neurological diseases. © 2013 Taylor & Francis Group, LLC.

Abstract

In virtual Compton scattering an electron is scattered off a nucleon such that the nucleon emits a photon. We show that these events can be selected experimentally, and present the first evidence for virtual Compton scattering from the proton in data obtained at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center. The angular and energy dependence of the data is well described by a calculation that includes the coherent sum of electron and proton radiation.

Abstract

We have measured the ratio [ital g][sup [ital p]][sub 1]/[ital F][sup [ital p]][sub 1] over the range 0.029[lt][ital x][lt]0.8 and 1.3[lt][ital Q][sup 2][lt]10 (GeV/[ital c])[sup 2] using deep-inelastic scattering of polarized electrons from polarized ammonia. An evaluation of the integral [integral][ital g][sup [ital p]][sub 1]([ital x],[ital Q][sup 2])[ital dx] at fixed [ital Q][sup 2]=3 (GeV/[ital c])[sup 2] yields 0.127[plus minus]0.004(stat)[plus minus]0.010(syst), in agreement with previous experiments, but well below the Ellis-Jaffe sum rule prediction of 0.160[plus minus]0.006. In the quark-parton model, this implies [Delta][ital q]=0.27[plus minus]0.10.

Abstract

The cross section for quasielastic ^(12)C(e,e’p) scattering has been measured at momentum transfer Q^2=1, 3, 5, and 6.8 (GeV/c)^2. The results are consistent with scattering from a single nucleon as the dominant process. The nuclear transparency is obtained and compared with theoretical calculations that incorporate color transparency effects. No significant rise of the transparency with Q^2 is observed.

Abstract

The authors report the results of the experiment E142 which measured the spin dependent structure function of the neutron, g{sub 1}{sup n}(x, Q{sup 2}). The experiment was carried out at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center by measuring an asymmetry in the deep inelastic scattering of polarized electrons from a polarized {sup 3}He target, at electron energies from 19 to 26 GeV. The structure function was determined over the kinematic range 0.03 < BJorken x < 0.6 and 1.0 < Q{sup 2} < 5.5 (GeV/c){sup 2}. An evaluation of the integral {integral}{sub 0}{sup 1} g{sub 1}{sup n}(x,Q{sup 2})dx at fixed Q{sup 2} = 2 (GeV/c){sup 2} yields the final result {Lambda}{sub 1}{sup n} = -0.032 {+-} 0.006 (stat.) {+-} 0.009 (syst.). This result, when combined with the integral of the proton spin structure function measured in other experiments, confirms the fundamental Bjorken sum rule with O({alpha}{sub s}{sup 3}) corrections to within one standard deviation. This is a major success for perturbative Quantum Chromodynamics. Some ancillary results include the findings that the Ellis-Jaffe sum rule for the neutron is violated at the 2 {sigma} level, and that the total contribution of the quarks to the helicity of the nucleon is 0.36 {+-}more » 0.10. The strange sea polarization is estimated to be small and negative, {Delta}s = -0.07 {+-} 0.04.« less

Abstract

New measurements of the electric GE(Q2) and magnetic GM(Q2) form factors of the nucleons are reported. The proton data cover the Q2 range from 1.75 to 8.83 (GeV/c)2 and the neutron data from 1.75 to 4.00 (GeV/c)2, more than doubling the range of previous data. Scaled by the dipole fit, GD(Q2), the results forGMp(Q2) /?pGD(Q2) decrease smoothly from 1.05 to 0.92, while GEp(Q2)/GD(Q2)is consistent with unity. The preliminary results for GMn(Q2) /?nGD(Q2) are consistent with unity, while GEn is consistent with zero at all values of Q2.

Abstract

The proton elastic form factors ${\mathit{G}}_{\mathit{E}\mathit{p}}$(${\mathit{Q}}^{2}$) and ${\mathit{G}}_{\mathit{M}\mathit{p}}$(${\mathit{Q}}^{2}$) have been extracted for ${\mathit{Q}}^{2}$=1.75 to 8.83 (GeV/c${)}^{2}$ via a Rosenbluth separation to ep elastic cross section measurements in the angular range 13\ifmmode^\circ\else\textdegree\fi{}\ensuremath{\le}\ensuremath{\theta}\ensuremath{\le}90\ifmmode^\circ\else\textdegree\fi{}. The ${\mathit{Q}}^{2}$ range covered more than doubles that of the existing data. For ${\mathit{Q}}^{2}$4 (GeV/c${)}^{2}$, where the data overlap with previous measurements, the total uncertainties have been reduced to 14% in ${\mathit{G}}_{\mathit{E}\mathit{p}}$ and 1.5% in ${\mathit{G}}_{\mathit{M}\mathit{p}}$. Results for ${\mathit{G}}_{\mathit{E}\mathit{p}}$(${\mathit{Q}}^{2}$) are consistent with the dipole fit ${\mathit{G}}_{\mathit{D}}$(${\mathit{Q}}^{2}$)=(1+${\mathit{Q}}^{2}$/0.71${)}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}2}$, while those for ${\mathit{G}}_{\mathit{M}\mathit{p}}$(${\mathit{Q}}^{2}$)/${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\mu}}}_{\mathit{p}}$${\mathit{G}}_{\mathit{D}}$(${\mathit{Q}}^{2}$) decrease smoothly from 1.05 to 0.92. Deviations from form factor scaling are observed up to 20%. The ratio ${\mathit{Q}}^{2}$${\mathit{F}}_{2}$/${\mathit{F}}_{1}$ is observed to approach a constant value for ${\mathit{Q}}^{2}$g3 (GeV/c${)}^{2}$. Comparisons are made to vector meson dominance, dimensional scaling, QCD sum rule, diquark, and constituent quark models, none of which fully characterize all the new data.

Abstract

Background: Hallervorden-Spatz syndrome is characterized by pyramidal and extrapyramidal signs, and dysarthria and dementia. Psychiatric symptomatology can emerge in the course of the disorder. Mutations in the pantothenate kinase 2 gene have been found in many cases. We report a case with psychosis as sole presenting symptom. Case: A 41-year-old man presented with change in behavior and paranoid delusional ideation. Six months later, spasticity, extrapyramidal rigidity and dysarthria were added to the picture. Eventually, the patient became mute and wheel-chair bound. The brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) was consistent with iron depositions in the globus pallidus and substantia nigra. Conclusions: In this case, the combination of clinical and MRI findings was consistent with Hallervorden-Spatz syndrome. The combination of psychiatric and MRI findings should lead to further neurological investigation. © 2007 The Authors.

Abstract

Measurements are reported of the proton and deuteron spin structure functions ${g}_{1}^{p}$ and ${g}_{1}^{d}$ at beam energies of 29.1, 16.2, and 9.7 GeV, and ${g}_{2}^{p}$ and ${g}_{2}^{d}$ at a beam energy of 29.1 GeV. The integrals ${\ensuremath{\Gamma}}_{p}={\ensuremath{\int}}_{0}^{1}{g}_{1}^{p}{(x,Q}^{2})dx$ and ${\ensuremath{\Gamma}}_{d}={\ensuremath{\int}}_{0}^{1}{g}_{1}^{d}{(x,Q}^{2})dx$ were evaluated at fixed ${Q}^{2}=3(\mathrm{GeV}{/c)}^{2}$ using the full data set to yield ${\ensuremath{\Gamma}}_{p}=0.132\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.003(\mathrm{stat})\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.009(\mathrm{syst})$ and ${\ensuremath{\Gamma}}_{d}=0.047\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.003\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.006.$ The ${Q}^{2}$ dependence of the ratio ${g}_{1}{/F}_{1}$ was studied and found to be small for ${Q}^{2}g1(\mathrm{GeV}{/c)}^{2}.$ Within experimental precision the ${g}_{2}$ data are well described by the twist-2 contribution, ${g}_{2}^{\mathrm{WW}}.$ Twist-3 matrix elements were extracted and compared to theoretical predictions. The asymmetry ${A}_{2}$ was measured and found to be significantly smaller than the positivity limit $\sqrt{R}$ for both proton and deuteron targets. ${A}_{2}^{p}$ is found to be positive and inconsistent with zero. Measurements of ${g}_{1}$ in the resonance region show strong variations with $x$ and ${Q}^{2},$ consistent with resonant amplitudes extracted from unpolarized data. These data allow us to study the ${Q}^{2}$ dependence of the integrals ${\ensuremath{\Gamma}}_{p}$ and ${\ensuremath{\Gamma}}_{n}$ below the scaling region.

Abstract

Measurements of inclusive electron-scattering cross sections using hydrogen and deuterium targets in the region of the $\ensuremath{\Delta}(1232)$ resonance are reported. A global fit to these new data and previous data in the resonance region is also reported for the proton. Transition form factors have been extracted from the proton cross sections for this experiment over the four-momentum transfer squared range $1.64l{Q}^{2}l6.75 (\mathrm{GeV}{/c)}^{2}$ and from previous data over the range $2.41l{Q}^{2}l9.82 (\mathrm{GeV}{/c)}^{2}.$ The results confirm previous reports that the $\ensuremath{\Delta}(1232)$ transition form factor decreases more rapidly with ${Q}^{2}$ than expected from perturbative QCD. The ratio of ${\ensuremath{\sigma}}_{n}/{\ensuremath{\sigma}}_{p}$ in the $\ensuremath{\Delta}(1232)$ resonance region has been extracted from the deuteron data for this experiment in the range $1.64l{Q}^{2}l3.75 (\mathrm{G}\mathrm{e}\mathrm{V}/{c)}^{2}$ and for a previous experiment in the range $2.4l{Q}^{2}l7.9 (\mathrm{GeV}{/c)}^{2}.$ A study has been made of the model dependence of these results. This ratio ${\ensuremath{\sigma}}_{n}/{\ensuremath{\sigma}}_{p}$ for $\ensuremath{\Delta}(1232)$ production is slightly less than unity, while ${\ensuremath{\sigma}}_{n}/{\ensuremath{\sigma}}_{p}$ for the nonresonant cross sections is approximately 0.5, which is consistent with deep inelastic scattering results.

Abstract

The virtual photon absorption cross section differences [sigma_1/2-sigma_3/2] for the proton and neutron have been determined from measurements of polarised cross section asymmetries in deep inelastic scattering of 27.5 GeV longitudinally polarised positrons from polarised 1H and 3He internal gas targets. The data were collected in the region above the nucleon resonances in the kinematic range nu < 23.5 GeV and 0.8 GeV**2 < Q**2 < 12 GeV**2. For the proton the contribution to the generalised Gerasimov-Drell-Hearn integral was found to be substantial and must be included for an accurate determination of the full integral. Furthermore the data are consistent with a QCD next-to-leading order fit based on previous deep inelastic scattering data. Measurements were performed for the photodisintegration cross section of the deuteron for photon energies from 1.6 to 2.8 GeV and center-of-mass angles from 37° to 90°. The measured energy dependence of the cross section at θ_(c.m.)=90° is in agreement with the constituent counting rules.

Abstract

Cross sections are presented for the reaction 2H(e,e′p)n for momentum transfers in the range 1.2≤Q^2≤6.8 (GeV/c)^2 and for missing momenta from 0 to 250 MeV/c. The longitudinal-transverse interference structure function has been separated at Q^2 = 1.2 (GeV/c)^2. The observables are compared to calculations performed in nonrelativistic and relativistic frameworks. The data are best described by a fully relativistic calculation.

Abstract

The threshold electrodisintegration of the deuteron was measured with good energy resolution to a maximum four-momentum transfer squared of 42 ${\mathrm{fm}}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}2}$. The data are compared with meson exchange calculations that show sensitivity to the choice of exchange-current form factor, the nucleon electromagnetic form factors, and the nucleon-nucleon potential. While conventional theories can give a reasonable description of the data, comparison of the data with quark cluster calculations shows poor agreement.

Abstract

Spin transfer in deep-inelastic Lambda electroproduction has been studied with the HERMES detector using the 27.6 GeV polarized positron beam in the HERA storage ring. For an average fractional energy transfer = 0.45, the longitudinal spin transfer from the virtual photon to the Lambda has been extracted. The spin transfer along the Lambda momentum direction is found to be 0.11 +/- 0.17 (stat) +/- 0.03 (sys); similar values are found for other possible choices for the longitudinal spin direction of the Lambda. This result is the most precise value obtained to date from deep-inelastic scattering with charged lepton beams, and is sensitive to polarized up quark fragmentation to hyperon states. The experimental result is found to be in general agreement with various models of the Lambda spin content, and is consistent with the assumption of helicity conservation in the fragmentation process., Comment: 8 pages, 3 figures; new version has an expanded discussion and small format changes

Abstract

The elucidation of possible involvement of the vertebral canal in familial spastic paraplegia is attempted. The sagittal and the transverse diameters of the cervical, thoracic and lumbar vertebral canal were estimated in 14 patients and 100 controls. The results showed that the vertebral canal of the patients is considerably smaller in its whole length and not only in the thoracic region. This finding is discussed in relation to the development of both the vertebral canal and spinal cord.

Abstract

The influence of hepatolenticular degeneration, a hereditary disease, and the skeletal mass, has been studied in the present work by determining various parameters of the skeletal mass. As such, the results of the morphometric observation on the second left metacarpal have been considered. The results have shown: a significant decrease of the skeletal mass (osteoporosis), an increased innter diameter (d) which reveals an equally increased osteal absorption (osteolysis) and no connection of the sex, type and duration of the disease with the skeletal mass.

Gamma-Glutamyl transpeptidase (gamma-GT) may be responsible for the rapid catabolism and low levels of lenticular glutathione often associated with cataract formation. Elevated levels of serum gamma-GT in patients with myotonic dystrophy suggest that since the defect could be present in all tissues it might be responsible for the cataracts frequently observed in this genetic disease.

Abstract

In the present study the structure of the skull and particularly the structure of the posterior cranial fossa was investigated in cases of primary cerebellar atrophy. The findings from the metric study of the skull X-rays of 13 patients were compared with those of a group of 100 healthy individuals. It was found that the patients' posterior fossa is more shallow than that of the controls (p less than 0.001). The modification of the posterior fossa seems to be attributed to shortness (p less than 0.01) of the bones which form it (clivus and occipital bone). Abstract

gamma-Glutamyl transpeptidase, a membrane-bound enzyme playing an important role in the active amino acid transport across cellular membranes, is shown to be elevated in the serum of patients with myotonic muscular dystrophy. No increase of AP, LAP, GOT and GPT activities in the sera of some of the patients studied is observed. Possible interpretations in relation to the pathogenesis of myotonic dystrophy are discussed.

Abstract

In order to investigate possible changes in the nucleo-cytoplasmic ratio of the muscle fibres during ageing, samples of quadriceps femoris from 15 normal individuals whose age ranged from 17 to 82 years were studied (autopsy material). The mean lesser diameter and the number and size of the muscle fibre nuclei were calculated using a planimetric technique. It was found that nucleo-cytoplasmic ratio increased significantly after the age of 60 years. This was due to a decrease in the mean fibre size whilst the number and the size of myonuclei remained unchanged. The resemblance of this finding to denervation atrophy changes is noted.

Abstract

This study presents the findings from a neuroradiological investigation of the cervical spinal canal in a number of diseases of the nervous system. It concerns the measurement of the sagittal and transversal diameters of the spinal canal at levels C3 through C6. The material for this investigation was made up of two main groups: A) 400 controls and B) 110 patients. The second group consisted of the following: 1) 20 patients suffering from Friedreich's Ataxia, 2) 14 patients with Steinert's disease, 3) 44 patients with lateral amyotrophic sclerosis, 4) 14 patients suffering from Charcot-Marie-Tooth's disease, and 5) 18 patients with muscular dystrophy. The results are as follow: 1) In patients with Friedreich's Ataxia both the sagittal and transversal diameters are smaller than those of the controls. 2) On the contrary, in Charcot-Marie-Tooth's disease the sagittal diameter is larger than the controls. 3) The transversal diameter in patients with muscular dystrophy is smaller than the controls and 4) the sagittal diameter of the vertebral canal decreases from the top (C3) downwards (C6) while the transversal diameter increases.
