1. Rectification in Ionic Field Effect Transistors Based on Single Crystal Silicon Nanopore

Abstract

Abstract Ionic FETs have enormous potential for energy conversion, sensing, and ionic circuits due to their efficient regulation of the nanochannel. Here ionic FETs based on single‐crystal silicon nanopores and the rectification of the fabricated devices are studied. The electrical characterization results demonstrated that since the silicon‐based nanopores have the advantage of modulating the surface charge due to their semiconductor nature and benefitting from the effective 3D gating effect on the nanochannel, the magnitude and polarity of surface charge can be modulated by the gate voltage. The rectification effect can be adjusted by applying a certain voltage and fulfilling a transition between anion selectivity and cation selectivity when the surface charge polarity is reversed. Moreover, current–voltage characteristics of the reported ionic FET can be switched between ohmic and diode‐like regimes. The proposed ionic FETs supply a novel platform to study the ionic properties and have great potential to be applied in large‐scale ionic circuits due to their excellent performance. Finally, simulation results prove the surface charge modulated by the gate voltage determines the magnitude and direction of rectification, which is consistent with the reported experiment result.

Abstract

Abstract Since the performance of micro-electro-mechanical system (MEMS)-based microphones is approaching fundamental physical, design, and material limits, it has become challenging to improve them. Several works have demonstrated graphene’s suitability as a microphone diaphragm. The potential for achieving smaller, more sensitive, and scalable on-chip MEMS microphones is yet to be determined. To address large graphene sizes, graphene-polymer heterostructures have been proposed, but they compromise performance due to added polymer mass and stiffness. This work demonstrates the first wafer-scale integrated MEMS condenser microphones with diameters of 2R = 220–320 μm, thickness of 7 nm multi-layer graphene, that is suspended over a back-plate with a residual gap of 5 μm. The microphones are manufactured with MEMS compatible wafer-scale technologies without any transfer steps or polymer layers that are more prone to contaminate and wrinkle the graphene. Different designs, all electrically integrated are fabricated and characterized allowing us to study the effects of the introduction of a back-plate for capacitive read-out. The devices show high mechanical compliances C m = 0.081–1.07 μmPa−1 (10–100 × higher than the silicon reported in the state-of-the-art diaphragms) and pull-in voltages in the range of 2–9.5 V. In addition, to validate the proof of concept, we have electrically characterized the graphene microphone when subjected to sound actuation. An estimated sensitivity of S 1k H z = 24.3–321 mV Pa−1 for a V b i a s = 1.5 V was determined, which is 1.9–25.5 × higher than of state-of-the-art microphone devices while having a ~9 × smaller area.

Abstract

Abstract Continuous monitoring of tissue microphysiology is a key enabling feature of the organ-on-chip (OoC) approach for in vitro drug screening and disease modeling. Integrated sensing units are particularly convenient for microenvironmental monitoring. However, sensitive in vitro and real-time measurements are challenging due to the inherently small size of OoC devices, the characteristics of commonly used materials, and external hardware setups required to support the sensing units. Here we propose a silicon-polymer hybrid OoC device that encompasses transparency and biocompatibility of polymers at the sensing area, and has the inherently superior electrical characteristics and ability to house active electronics of silicon. This multi-modal device includes two sensing units. The first unit consists of a floating-gate field-effect transistor (FG-FET), which is used to monitor changes in pH in the sensing area. The threshold voltage of the FG-FET is regulated by a capacitively-coupled gate and by the changes in charge concentration in close proximity to the extension of the floating gate, which functions as the sensing electrode. The second unit uses the extension of the FG as microelectrode, in order to monitor the action potential of electrically active cells. The layout of the chip and its packaging are compatible with multi-electrode array measurement setups, which are commonly used in electrophysiology labs. The multi-functional sensing is demonstrated by monitoring the growth of induced pluripotent stem cell-derived cortical neurons. Our multi-modal sensor is a milestone in combined monitoring of different, physiologically-relevant parameters on the same device for future OoC platforms.

Abstract

Abstract The application of single-crystal silicon (SCS) nanopore structures in single-molecule-based analytical devices is an emerging approach for the separation and analysis of nanoparticles. The key challenge is to fabricate individual SCS nanopores with precise sizes in a controllable and reproducible way. This paper introduces a fast-stop ionic current-monitored three-step wet etching (TSWE) method for the controllable fabrication of SCS nanopores. Since the nanopore size has a quantitative relationship with the corresponding ionic current, it can be regulated by controlling the ionic current. Thanks to the precise current-monitored and self-stop system, an array of nanoslits with a feature size of only 3 nm was obtained, which is the smallest size ever reported using the TSWE method. Furthermore, by selecting different current jump ratios, individual nanopores of specific sizes were controllably prepared, and the smallest deviation from the theoretical value was 1.4 nm. DNA translocation measurement results revealed that the prepared SCS nanopores possessed the excellent potential to be applied in biosensing.

Abstract

Chemical vapor deposition (CVD) has been demonstrated as a highly promising technique for the production of graphene on large scale and enabling tunability of the intrinsic defects of the films during the synthesis.In this work, we report on the correlation between the density of defects (DoD) and the kinetics of interaction of multi-layered graphene (MLG) with nitrogen dioxide (NO2) used as a target gas. We grow MLG on a pre-patterned molybdenum (Mo) catalyst layer, tailoring the DoD while growing MLG at temperatures from 850 °C to 980 °C. Analysing the Raman spectra, we show the lowering of the DoD as well as a quality dependence of MLG as a function of the growth temperature. The chemi-resistors based on MLG grown at different temperatures unambiguously highlight that, both during the exposure and the subsequent purge phase, the more defective the MLG, the more intense the NO2’s molecules interaction with MLG. Our results significantly mark a step forward in tuning the sensing properties of MLG without the need of any post-processing of the material after synthesis.

Abstract

Organ-on-a-chip (OoC) and microfluidic devices are conventionally produced using microfabrication procedures that require cleanrooms, silicon wafers, and photomasks. The prototyping stage often requires multiple iterations of design steps. A simplified prototyping process could therefore offer major advantages. Here, we describe a rapid and cleanroom-free microfabrication method using maskless photolithography. The approach utilizes a commercial digital micromirror device (DMD)-based setup using 375 nm UV light for backside exposure of an epoxy-based negative photoresist (SU-8) on glass coverslips. We show that microstructures of various geometries and dimensions, microgrooves, and microchannels of different heights can be fabricated. New SU-8 molds and soft lithography-based polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) chips can thus be produced within hours. We further show that backside UV exposure and grayscale photolithography allow structures of different heights or structures with height gradients to be developed using a single-step fabrication process. Using this approach: (1) digital photomasks can be designed, projected, and quickly adjusted if needed; and (2) SU-8 molds can be fabricated without cleanroom availability, which in turn (3) reduces microfabrication time and costs and (4) expedites prototyping of new OoC devices.

Abstract

Genetically engineered mouse models (GEMM) of cancer are of increasing value to preclinical therapeutics. Optical imaging is a cost-effective method of assessing deep-seated tumor growth in GEMMs whose tumors can be encoded to express luminescent or fluorescent reporters, although reporter signal attenuation would be improved if animals were fur-free. In this study, we sought to determine whether hereditable furlessness resulting from a hypomorphic mutation in the Hairless gene would or would not also affect immune competence. By assessing humoral and cellular immunity of the SKH1 mouse line bearing the hypomorphic Hairless mutation, we determined that blood counts, immunoglobulin levels, and CD4+ and CD8+ T cells were comparable between SKH1 and the C57Bl/6 strain. On examination of T-cell subsets, statistically significant differences in naïve T cells (1.7 versus 3.4 × 105 cells/spleen in SKH1 versus C57Bl/6, P = 0.008) and memory T cells (1.4 versus 0.13 × 106 cells/spleen in SKH1 versus C57Bl/6, P = 0.008) were detected. However, the numerical differences did not result in altered T-cell functional response to antigen rechallenge (keyhole limpet hemocyanin) in a lymph node cell in vitro proliferative assay. Furthermore, interbreeding the SKH1 mouse line to a rhabdomyosarcoma GEMM showed preserved antitumor responses of CD56+ natural killer cells and CD163+ macrophages, without any differences in tumor pathology. The fur-free GEMM was also especially amenable to multiplex optical imaging. Thus, SKH1 represents an immune competent, fur-free mouse strain that may be of use for interbreeding to other genetically engineered mouse models of cancer for improved preclinical studies. Abstract

Humidity sensing is fundamental in some applications, as humidity can be a strong interferent in the detection of analytes under environmental conditions. Ideally, materials sensitive or insensitive towards humidity are strongly needed for the sensors used in the first or second case, respectively. We present here the sensing properties of multi-layered graphene (MLG) upon exposure to different levels of relative humidity. We synthesize MLG by chemical vapor deposition, as shown by Raman spectroscopy, Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). Through an MLG-based resistor, we show that MLG is scarcely sensitive to humidity in the range 30%–70%, determining current variations in the range of 0.005%/%relative humidity (RH) well below the variation induced by other analytes. These findings, due to the morphological properties of MLG, suggest that defective MLG is the ideal sensing material to implement in gas sensors operating both at room temperature and humid conditions.

Abstract

Aims. In this work we use the Gaia DR3 set of ultracool dwarf candidates and complement the Gaia spectrophotometry with additional photometry in order to characterise its global properties. This includes the inference of the distances, their locus in the Gaia colour-absolute magnitude diagram and the (biased through selection) luminosity function in the faint end of the Main Sequence. We study the overall changes in the Gaia RP spectra as a function of spectral type. We study the UCDs in binary systems, attempt to identify low-mass members of nearby young associations, star forming regions and clusters, and analyse their variability properties. Results. We detect 57 young, kinematically homogeneous groups some of which are identified as well known star forming regions, associations and clusters of different ages. We find that the primary members of 880 binary systems with a UCD belong mainly to the thin and thick disk components of the Milky Way. We identify 1109 variable UCDs using the variability tables in the Gaia archive, 728 of which belong to the star forming regions defined by HMAC. We define two groups of variable UCDs with extreme bright or faint outliers. Conclusions. The set of sources identified as UCDs in the Gaia archive contains a wealth of information that will require focused follow-up studies and observations. Abstract

The next generation of satellites will need to tackle tomorrow's challenges for communication, navigation and observation. In order to do so, it is expected that the amount of satellites in orbit will keep increasing, form smart constellations and miniaturize individual satellites to make access to space cost effective. To enable this next generation of activities in space, it is vital to ensure the ability of these satellites to properly navigate themselves. This control starts with attitude measurement by the dedicated sensors on the satellite, commonly performed by sun position sensors. The state-of-the art is confronted by large signal distortions caused by light reflected by the Earth's albedo as well as keeping up with the satellite miniaturization trend. This work aims to address both these issues, by presenting a microfabricated albedo insensitive sun position sensor in silicon carbide with wafer-level integrated optics. The presented 10 mm×10 mm×1 mm system reaches a mean angular accuracy of 5.7° in a ±37° field-of-view and integrates an on-chip temperature sensor with a -3.9 mV K−1 sensitivity in the 20 °C to 200 °C range.

40. Stellar ages, and how the NOT can help us

Abstract

Unravelling the age is one of the most challenging tasks since most are subject to significant uncertainties, and their determinations face multiple observational and theoretical challenges. Ages are generally better determined in stellar associations. They usually provide a significant sample of objects when testing the hypothesis that they were born simultaneously from the same molecular cloud and identical composition. Several features and characteristics are considered when deriving ages in stellar associations. However, each of them is valid within a specific age interval. In particular, we focus on those techniques related to lithium evolution, valid for values between 20 to a few hundred Ma. To address this task, we need spectrographs with enough resolving power to determine the presence or absence of lithium in FGK dwarfs, low-mass stars and brown dwarfs. Here we present our pilot study of the observing capabilities of the NOT with ALFOSC and FIES to determine ages in several stellar associations systematically.

Abstract

Organ-on-chip (OOC) is becoming the alternative tool to conventional in vitro screening. Heart-on-chip devices including microstructures for mechanical and electrical stimulation have been demonstrated to be advantageous to study structural organization and maturation of heart cells. This paper presents the development of metal and polymeric strain gauges for in situ monitoring of mechanical strain in the Cytostretch platform for heart-on-chip application. Specifically, the optimization of the fabrication process of metal titanium (Ti) strain gauges and the investigation on an alternative material to improve the robustness and performance of the devices are presented. The transduction behavior and functionality of the devices are successfully proven using a custom-made set-up. The devices showed resistance changes for the pressure range (0−3 kPa) used to stretch the membranes on which heart cells can be cultured. Relative resistance changes of approximately 0.008% and 1.2% for titanium and polymeric strain gauges are respectively reported for membrane deformations up to 5%. The results demonstrate that both conventional IC metals and polymeric materials can be implemented for sensing mechanical strain using robust microfabricated organ-on-chip devices.

Abstract

This paper describes the microfabrication and electrical characterization of aluminum-coated superconducting through-silicon vias (TSVs) with sharp superconducting transition above 1 K. The sharp superconducting transition was achieved by means of fully conformal and void-free DC-sputtering of the TSVs with Al, and is here demonstrated in up to $500~\mu \text{m}$ -deep vias. Full conformality of Al sputtering was made possible by shaping the vias with a tailored hourglass profile, which allowed a metallic layer as thick as 430 nm to be deposited in the center of the vias. Single-via electric resistance as low as 160 $\text{m}\Omega $ at room temperature and superconductivity at 1.27 K were measured by a three-dimensional (3D) cross-bridge Kelvin resistor structure. This work establishes a CMOS-compatible fabrication process suitable for arrays of superconducting TSVs and 3D integration of superconducting silicon-based devices. [2020-0354]

Abstract

Stellar ages are key to improving our understanding of different astrophysical phenomena. However, many techniques to estimate stellar ages are highly model-dependent. The lithium depletion boundary (LDB), based on the presence or absence of lithium in low-mass stars, can be used to derive ages in stellar associations of between 20 and 500~Ma. The purpose of this work is to revise former LDB ages in stellar associations in a consistent way, taking advantage of the homogeneous \textit{Gaia} parallaxes as well as bolometric luminosity estimations that do not rely on monochromatic bolometric corrections. We studied nine open clusters and three moving groups characterised by a previous determination of the LDB age. We gathered all the available information from our data and the literature: membership, distances, photometric data, reddening, metallicity, and surface gravity. We re-assigned membership and calculated bolometric luminosities and effective temperatures using distances derived from Gaia DR2 and multi-wavelength photometry for individual objects around the former LDB. We located the LDB using a homogeneous method for all the stellar associations. Finally, we estimated the age by comparing it with different evolutionary models. We located the LDB for the twelve stellar associations and derived their ages using several theoretical evolutionary models. We compared the LDB ages among them, along with data obtained with other techniques, such as isochrone fitting, ultimately finding some discrepancies among the various approaches. Abstract

Aims. We produce a clean and well-characterised catalogue of objects within 100 pc of the Sun from the Gaia Early Data Release 3. We characterise the catalogue through comparisons to the full data release, external catalogues, and simulations. We carry out a first analysis of the science that is possible with this sample to demonstrate its potential and best practices for its use., Methods. Theselection of objects within 100 pc from the full catalogue used selected training sets, machine-learning procedures, astrometric quantities, and solution quality indicators to determine a probability that the astrometric solution is reliable. The training set construction exploited the astrometric data, quality flags, and external photometry. For all candidates we calculated distance posterior probability densities using Bayesian procedures and mock catalogues to define priors. Any object with reliable astrometry and a non-zero probability of being within 100 pc is included in the catalogue., Results. We have produced a catalogue of 331 312 objects that we estimate contains at least 92% of stars of stellar type M9 within 100 pc of the Sun. We estimate that 9% of the stars in this catalogue probably lie outside 100 pc, but when the distance probability function is used, a correct treatment of this contamination is possible. We produced luminosity functions with a high signal-to-noise ratio for the main-sequence stars, giants, and white dwarfs. We examined in detail the Hyades cluster, the white dwarf population, and wide-binary systems and produced candidate lists for all three samples. We detected local manifestations of several streams, superclusters, and halo objects, in which we identified 12 members of Gaia Enceladus. We present the first direct parallaxes of five objects in multiple systems within 10 pc of the Sun., Conclusions. We provide the community with a large, well-characterised catalogue of objects in the solar neighbourhood. This is a primary benchmark for measuring and understanding fundamental parameters and descriptive functions in astronomy.

Abstract

In view of the integration of membrane resonators with more complex MEMS structures, we developed a general fabrication procedure for circular shape SiNx membranes using Deep Reactive Ion Etching (DRIE). Large area and high-stress SiNx membranes were fabricated and used as optomechanical resonators in a Michelson interferometer, where Q values up to 1.3 × 106 were measured at cryogenic temperatures, and in a Fabry-Pérot cavity, where an optical finesse up to 50000 has been observed.

Abstract

We present a wafer-scale fabricated, PDMS-based platform for culturing miniaturized engineered heart tissues (EHTs) which allows highly accurate measurements of the contractile properties of these tissues. The design of the platform is an anisometrically downscaled version of the Heart-Dyno system, consisting of two elastic micropillars inside an elliptic microwell with volume ranging from 3 down to $1\mu \text{L}$ which supports EHT formation. Size downscaling facilitates fabrication of the platform and makes it compatible with accurate and highly reproducible batch wafer-scale processing; furthermore, downscaling reduces the cost of cell cultures and increases assay throughput. After fabrication, the devices were characterized by nanoindentation to assess the mechanical properties of the pillars and transferred to 96-well plates for cell seeding. Regardless the size of the platform, cell seeding resulted in successful formation of EHTs and all tissues were functionally active ( i.e. showed cyclic contractions). The precise characterization of the stiffness of the micropillars enabled accurate measurements of the contractile forces exerted by the cardiac tissues through optical tracking of micropillar displacement. The miniature EHT platforms described in this paper represent a proper microenvironment for culturing and studying EHTs. [2020-0130]

Abstract

During the past decades micro-electromechanical microphones have largely taken over the market for portable devices, being produced in volumes of billions yearly. Because performance of current devices is near the physical limits, further miniaturization and improvement of microphones for mobile devices poses a major challenge that requires breakthrough device concepts, geometries, and materials. Graphene is an attractive material for enabling these breakthroughs due to its flexibility, strength, nanometer thinness, and high electrical conductivity. Here, we demonstrate that transfer-free 7 nm thick multilayer graphene (MLGr) membranes with diameters ranging from 85-155 to 300 μm can be used to detect sound and show a mechanical compliance up to 92 nm Pa-1, thus outperforming commercially available MEMS microphones of 950 μm with compliances around 3 nm Pa-1. The feasibility of realizing larger membranes with diameters of 300 μm and even higher compliances is shown, although these have lower yields. We present a process for locally growing graphene on a silicon wafer and realizing suspended membranes of patterned graphene across through-silicon holes by bulk micromachining and sacrificial layer etching, such that no transfer is required. This transfer-free method results in a 100% yield for membranes with diameters up to 155 μm on 132 fabricated drums. The device-To-device variations in the mechanical compliance in the audible range (20-20000 Hz) are significantly smaller than those in transferred membranes. With this work, we demonstrate a transfer-free method for realizing wafer-scale multilayer graphene membranes that is compatible with high-volume manufacturing. Thus, limitations of transfer-based methods for graphene microphone fabrication such as polymer contamination, crack formation, wrinkling, folding, delamination, and low-Tension reproducibility are largely circumvented, setting a significant step on the route toward high-volume production of graphene microphones.
