Hysteresis is one of key factors influencing the output of magnetorheological (MR) actuators. The actuators reveal two primary sources of hysteresis. The hydro(mechanical) hysteresis can be related to flow dynamics mechanisms and is frequency- or rate-dependent. For comparison, the magnetic hysteresis is an inherent property of ferromagnetic materials forming the magnetic circuit of the actuators. The need for a good quality hysteresis model has been early recognized in studies on MR actuators; however, few studies have provided models which could be used in the design stage. In the paper we reveal a hybrid multiphysics model of a flow-mode MR actuator which could be used for that purpose. The model relies on the information which can be extracted primarily from material datasheets and engineering drawings. We reveal key details of the model and then verify it against measured data. Finally, we employ it in a parameter sensitivity study to examine the influence of magnetic hysteresis and other relevant factors on the output of the actuator.

Commercial orange juices samples obtained from the Czech market were analysed in the years 1996-2001. The quality and authenticity of samples was evaluated according to the Code of Practice of AIJN (selected main analytical criteria were followed - K+, Na+, Ca2+, Mg2+, citric, isocitric and malic acid, citric acid/isocitric acid ratio, glucose, fructose, saccharose, sorbitol, formol number, flavonoid glycosides - according to Davis and HPLC procedure, refractive index and other). The approach of producers to the quality and authenticity of juices developed during the years of observation. The main cases of adulteration in 1996 were as follows: (i) lower fruit content in juice, (ii) massive addition of sugars masked with addition of citric acid, (iii) several examples of "synthetic" orange juice were found. In the subsequent years the authenticity slightly improved, the main problems in 2000/2001 were: (i) lower refractive index, (ii) pulp wash addition, (iii) lower quality of water used for juice reconstitution, (iv) undeclared addition of sugar. The deviations were found not only in the case of the juices of Czech producers, but also in several discount and low-end products of foreign producers. Possible ways of improving the quality and authenticity are discussed (e.g. the preparation of a Czech National Standard taking over the requirements for juices and nectars according to the Code of Practice of the AIJN, Participation in the European Quality Control System [EQCS], etc.).

This paper deals with the design and tests of a magnetorheological fluid seal (MRFs) using the innovative concept of the magnetic circuit, which allows the achievement of a promising trade-off between burst pressure and friction of the seal. Low friction torque and low burst pressure are typical for a ferrofluid seal (FFs). Replacement of the ferrofluid by magnetorheological fluid increases the burst pressure of the seal but the friction torque of the seal increases too. The optimum for sealing application is low friction torque and high burst pressure. The presented design is based on the pinch mode of magnetorheological fluid. The geometry of the seal was determined by a magnetostatic model. Subsequently, the chosen concept of the seal was manufactured and tested. Pinch MRFs achieved lower friction torque than common (standard) MRFs and a higher burst pressure than any FFs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article presents a novel sedimentation measurement technique based on quantifying the changes in magnetic flux density when the magnetorheological fluid (MRF) passes through the air gap of the magnetic circuit. The sedimented MRF appears to have as a result of increased iron content. Accordingly, the sedimented portion of the sample displays a higher magnetic conductivity than the unsedimented area that contains less iron particles. The data analysis and evaluation methodology is elaborated along with an example set of measurements, which are compared against the visual observations and available data in the literature. Experiments indicate that unlike the existing methods, the new technique is able to accurately generate the complete curves of the sedimentation profile in a long-term sedimentation. The proposed method is capable of successfully detecting the area with the tightest particle configuration near the bottom (‘cake’ layer). It also addresses the issues with the development of an unclear boundary between the carrier fluid and the sediment (mudline) during an accelerated sedimentation process; improves the sensitivity of the sedimentation detection and accurately measure the changes in particle concentration with a high resolution. The paper deals with design, simulation and experimental testing of a magnetorheological (MR) valve with short response time. The short response time is achieved by a suitable design of an active zone in combination with use of a ferrite material for magnetic circuit. The magneto-static model and the simplified hydraulic model of the MR valve are examined and experimentally verified. Magnetorheological (MR) fluids can be utilized in one of the fundamental operating modes of which the gradient pinch mode has been the least explored. In this unique mode non-uniform magnetic field distributions are taken advantage of to develop a so-called Venturi-like contraction in MR fluids. By adequately directing magnetic flux the material can be made solidified in the regions near the flow channel wall, thus creating a passage in the middle of the channel for the fluid to pass through. This leads to unique variations of the slope in the pressure-flow rate characteristics. It can be stated that the effect of the MR fluid composition on the behaviour of the MR fluid in gradient pinch mode has not been thoroughly investigated yet. In this study, the behaviour of MR fluids was assessed with a dedicated pinch mode MR valve that provided a valuable insight into the contraction mechanism using fluorescence microscopy. Briefly, seven MR fluid samples were prepared with different particle concentrations (10%, 22% and 32 vol%) and mean particle sizes (2, 4.5 and 8.2 μm). It was found that the MR fluid sample with the larger particle size exhibits a significantly larger slope change observed in the pressure-flow rate characteristics. Increasing the particle size from 2 μm (base) to 8 μm resulted in the slope increase by a factor of 2.6 compared to the base sample. Increasing the particle concentration has a negligible effect on the pinch mode effect. Finally, these results were analysed using the modified Wuest equation, which is commonly used for characterizing sharp-edged orifices in low Reynolds number flow regimes. In this article we would like to present, to our best knowledge, the very first published replantation of a forehead/part of a forehead as a single unit. The patient is a 57-year-old male smoker who sustained an avulsion forehead injury after a dog bite. Replantation was performed using microanastomosis of the supratrochlear vessels with restoration of good blood circulation after the procedure. Unfortunately, 5 days after the surgery, ischemia of the flap occurred followed by successful acute revision surgery. Nevertheless, the day after the ischemia reoccurred due to the time that passed, circumstances and unfavorable conditions affecting the sutured vessels, no further revision surgery was indicated. Observation continued and eventual wound necrosis after demarcation was left to be treated with skin grafting or per secundam intentionem. Only partial necrosis of the flap occurred, approximately 50%, which was subsequently treated with a full-thickness skin graft with very good results leading to the satisfaction of the patient.

During the period of 1960s and 1970s, a new alloplastic material - Wichterle gel - was introduced in the field of plastic surgery. In 1961, a Czech scientist, prof. Otto Wichterle, had developed, along with his research team, a hydrophilic gel made of polymers, which fulfilled the high standards for prosthetic materials due to its hydrophilic, chemical, thermal and shape stability that provided a better tolerance in the body compared with other hydrophobic gels. Plastic surgeons had started to use the gel for breast augmentations and reconstructions. Success of the gel had been reinforced due to its easy preoperative preparation. The material had been implanted during general anaesthesia via submammary approach over the muscle fixed with a stitch to the fascia. Fixing corset bandage was applied after the surgery. The implanted material had proved to be suitable for postoperative processes with a minimum of complications. In the later postoperative period, however, serious complications occurred - mainly infections and calcifications. Long-term results are presented by case reports. Today, this material is no longer used and it is replaced by more modern implants.

The transient behaviour of magnetorheological (MR) devices is an important parameter for modern semi-actively controlled suspension systems. A significant part of the MR device response time is the MR fluid response time itself. A significant factor is the so-called rheological response time. The rheological response time is connected with the structuring particle's time and the development of shear stress in MR fluid during the deformation. The main aim of this paper is to experimentally determine the rheological response time of MR fluid and evaluated the effect of shear rate, magnetic field level, and carrier fluid viscosity. The unique design of the rheometer, which allows the rapid change of a magnetic field, is presented. The rheological response time of MRF 132-DG and MRC-C1L is in the range of 0.8-1.4 ms, depending on the shear rate. The higher the shear rate, the shorter the response time. It can be stated that the higher the magnetization of the MR fluid, the lower the response time. The higher the viscosity, the higher the rheological response time. This article presents a list of suitable techniques and materials leading to the design of an ultra-fast magnetorheological (MR) valve. Two approaches for achieving the short response time are proposed: (a) by means of material, and (b) by means of the shape. Within the shape approach, the revolutionary technique of 3D metal printing using a selective laser melting (SLM) method was tested. The suitability of the materials and techniques is addressed based on the length of the response time, which is determined by the FEM. The simulation results determine the response time of the magnetic flux density on the step signal of the current. Subsequently, the response time is verified by the measurement of the simple magnetorheological valve. The following materials were tested: martensitic stainless steel AISI 420A (X20Cr13), cutting steel 11SMn30, pure iron for SLM, Sintex SMC STX prototyping material, ferrite N87, and Vacoflux 50. A special technique involving grooves was used for preventing eddy currents on materials with a high electrical conductivity. The simulation and experimental results indicate that a response time shorter than 2.5 ms can be achieved using materials such as Sintex SMC prototyping, ferrite N87, and grooved variants of metal pistons.

The paper focuses on the coefficient of friction (COF) of a magnetorheological fluid (MRF) in the wide range of working conditions across all the lubrication regimes-boundary, mixed, elastohydrodynamic (EHD), and hydrodynamic (HD) lubrication, specifically focused on the common working area of MR damper. The coefficient of friction was measured for MR fluids from Lord company with concentrations of 22, 32, and 40 vol. % of iron particles at temperatures 40 and 80 °C. The results were compared with a reference fluid, a synthetic liquid hydrocarbon PAO4 used as a carrier fluid of MRF. The results show that at boundary regime and temperature 40 °C all the fluids exhibit similar COF of 0.11-0.13. Differences can be found in the EHD regime, where the MR fluid COF is significantly higher (0.08) in comparison with PAO4 (0.04). The COF of MR fluid in the HD regime rose very steeply in comparison with PAO4. The effect of particle concentration is significant in the HD regime.

An interlaboratory study was performed in eight laboratories to validate an ELISA method developed for quantitative determination of casein in foods. The ELISA kit used is based on rabbit polyclonal antibodies. The kit is quite specific; no false-positive results or cross-reactivities were obtained for a broad range of food matrixes with zero content of milk proteins. All participants in the study received the casein kit, which included a standard operating procedure, a list of the samples, the samples, and a protocol for recording test results. The study included nine food samples: wheat flour, buckwheat flour, instant potato purée with milk, instant coffee with sugar and cream, a mixture for fancy bread, salami, liver paté, chocolate muesli with nuts, and a mixture for gluten-free bread. Three food samples with zero content of milk proteins showed a casein content lower than the lowest casein standard (1.0 mg CAS/kg) in most laboratories and measurements (64%). In 98% of the cases, the casein content was lower than the estimated LOQ. Two food samples with no dairy ingredient declared on the ingredient list contained casein levels higher than the second casein standard (3.0 mg CAS/kg) and the third standard (10.0 mg CAS/kg), respectively. Four food samples containing milk as an ingredient tested positive, and three showed casein contents higher than the highest standard (30.0 mg CAS/kg). The statistical tests (Cochran, Dixon) and analysis of variance were used for evaluation of the interlaboratory study results. Repeatability and reproducibility limits as well as LOQ (1.8 mg CAS/kg) and LOD (0.5 mg CAS/kg) for the kit were calculated from the results of the interlaboratory study.

The ELISA kit used for this study is based on rabbit polyclonal antibody. In-house validation of the kit did not produce false-positive results or cross-reactivity in a broad range of food matrixes containing no milk proteins. All participants obtained the BLG kit with a standard operational procedure, the list of the samples, samples, and a protocol for recording test results. The study included 14 food samples (extruded breakfast cereals, bread, two soy desserts, butter, chicken ham, chicken meat, wheat flour, long grain rice, jelly, two whey drinks, crackers, and bitter chocolate) and six spiked samples (two rice, two wheat flour, and two chicken meat). Nine samples of food matrixes containing no milk proteins showed BLG content lower than the first standard (0.15 mg/kg). Two samples of food matrixes with no milk proteins revealed BLG content higher than standard 3 (1.5 mg/100 g) and standard 4 (5.0 mg/100 g). Three food samples containing milk were tested as positive, and all spiked samples were evaluated as positive. The statistical tests (Cochran, Dixon, and Mandel) and analysis of variance were used to evaluate the interlaboratory study results. Repeatability and reproducibility limits, as well as LOQ (0.22 mg BLG/kg) and LOD (0.07 mg BLG/kg), for the kit were calculated.

An interlaboratory study with 10 participants was performed to obtain validation and performance data for an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) kit developed for quantitative gluten determination in foods. The ELISA kit used for this study is based on 2 monoclonal and 1 polyclonal antibody developed by Immunotech, a Beckman Coulter Co. This kit did not show any false positive results or cross-reactivity with oat, rice, maize, and buckwheat. The gliadin standard from the Working Group on Prolamin Analysis and Toxicity was included in the kit as reference material for calibration. All participants obtained a gliadin ELISA kit with Standard Operational Procedure and a form for recording test results. The study included 13 samples labeled as "gluten-free" and 2 samples spiked by wheat flour. Seven samples had gliadin content below the limit of quantitation (LOQ) of the method, and 1 sample exceeded the highest calibration level. Gliadin content in the range from 10 to 157 mg/kg (1st day) and from 11 to 183 mg/kg (2nd day) was found in 7 samples (including 2 spiked samples). Results of these samples were used for further statistical analysis and evaluation. The Cochran, Dixon, and Mandel statistical tests were applied for detection of outliers. The LOQ of the kit was estimated.

Background: Elevated phenylalanine levels in maternal blood (hyperphenylalaninaemia) during pregnancy damages the developing foetal tissues. Early detection of pregnant women with hyperphenylalaninaemia and adherence to a low phenylalanine diet already before conception and throughout pregnancy can prevent this damage. The objective of the investigation are results achieved screening and strict monitoring of low phenylalanine dietetic treatment in detected pregnant women of the Prague population., Methods and Results: 186 350 healthy women of the Prague population were examined by the chromatographic screening test in a venous blood sample during their first visit in a maternity welfare centre and 22 positive cases were detected (incidence 1:8470). In 86% mild, persistent or benign forms of phenylketonuria were involved. Nineteen patients were treated by a low phenylalanine diet and the phenylalanine tolerance was monitored as well as the nitrogen balance, amino acids in serum and urine, protein markers, trace elements, vitamins, lipids, the body mass index-BMI, changes of body weight after introduction of the dietetic treatment and treatment during pregnancy. A significant increase of the phenylalanine tolerance by 20 to 200% was found, mostly in the second half of pregnancy and reduced values of serum and urinary selenium. The decrease of body weight when the diet was introduced and the increment during pregnancy correlated with the BMI value. In the other investigated parameters no significant deviations were found., Conclusion: Fifteen healthy children with normal psychomotor development delivered by 12 mothers with hyperphenylalaninaemia provide evidence of the effectiveness of prenatal screening for hyperphenylalaninaemia during pregnancy.

Urine samples of 200,000 sucklings in 6th-8th month after delivery was analyzed by means of chromatographic screening test for amino acids, sugars and muccopolysacharides. In 1.4% of them persistent and in 51.6% transitory hyperaminoacidurias, in 0.15% persistent and 12.5% transitory melliturias and in 0.05% alcaptonuria were detected. No one case of muccopolysacharidosis was detected. 239 persistent metabolic disorders were detected. These disorders were not possible to detect by means of an obligatory screening test performed on 5th-6th day after delivery from capillary blood. All positive detected cases were verified by detailed metabolic investigation (thin layer, liquid and gas-chromatography).
