Abstract

This paper introduces a software architecture for real-time object detection using machine learning (ML) in an augmented reality (AR) environment. Our approach uses the recent state-of-the-art YOLOv8 network that runs onboard on the Microsoft HoloLens 2 head-mounted display (HMD). The primary motivation behind this research is to enable the application of advanced ML models for enhanced perception and situational awareness with a wearable, hands-free AR platform. We show the image processing pipeline for the YOLOv8 model and the techniques used to make it real-time on the resource-limited edge computing platform of the headset. The experimental results demonstrate that our solution achieves real-time processing without needing offloading tasks to the cloud or any other external servers while retaining satisfactory accuracy regarding the usual mAP metric and measured qualitative performance

Abstract

The Nuclotron-base Ion Collider fAcility (NICA) is under construction at the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research (JINR), with commissioning of the facility expected in late 2022. The Multi-Purpose Detector (MPD) has been designed to operate at NICA and its components are currently in production. The detector is expected to be ready for data taking with the first beams from NICA. This document provides an overview of the landscape of the investigation of the QCD phase diagram in the region of maximum baryonic density, where NICA and MPD will be able to provide significant and unique input. It also provides a detailed description of the MPD set-up, including its various subsystems as well as its support and computing infrastructures. Abstract

ABSTRACT: Phractocephalus hemioliopterus, Hemisorubim platyrhynchos, and Zungaro zungaro are native of South American rivers whose population is being threatened by the damming of rivers to build hydroelectric dams, fishing pressure and environmental degradation. Basic information on these species’ reproductive characteristics is necessary to enable production in captivity. The aim of this study was to present descriptive data regarding the sperm parameters of these three species maintained in captivity, the correlations between these parameters, and relevant factors, and how these issues can affect sperm quality. Sperm was collected and diluted in Beltsville Thawing Solution after hormonal induction with carp pituitary extract. The evaluated parameters for Hemisorubim platyrhynchos, Phractocephalus hemioliopterus, and Zungaro zungaro were, respectively: Sperm concentration (×109) was 3.00, 1.77, and 1.40 sperm mL−1; Sperm total length was 93.2, 91.4, and 79.4 μm; Motility rate was 71.8, 73.5, and 61.7%; Normal sperm was 35.5, 38.8, and 30.2%. Describing sperm characteristics is extremely important for the artificial reproduction of fish in captivity, contributing to the knowledge on the reproductive biology of the species. In the present study, we discuss these issues to build the knowledge necessary for sperm characterization of these little-studied species. Our results suggest that the morphological abnormalities can affect motility and sperm movement kinetics.

Abstract

The measurement of $K^{*}(892)^0$ resonance production via its $K^{+}\pi^{-}$ decay mode in inelastic p+p collisions at beam momentum 158 GeV/$c$ ($\sqrt{s_{NN}}=17.3$ GeV) is presented. The data were recorded by the NA61/SHINE hadron spectrometer at the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron. The \textit{template} method was used to extract the $K^{*}(892)^0$ signal and double differential transverse momentum and rapidity spectra were obtained. The full phase-space mean multiplicity of $K^{*}(892)^0$ mesons was found to be $(78.44 \pm 0.38 \mathrm{(stat)} \pm 6.0 \mathrm{(sys)) \cdot 10^{-3}}$. The NA61/SHINE results are compared with the EPOS1.99 and Hadron Resonance Gas models as well as with world data from p+p and nucleus-nucleus collisions., Comment: version published in Eur. Phys. J. NA61/SHINE, a large-acceptance hadron spectrometer, has recorded hadron+nucleus interactions relevant to ongoing and future long-baseline neutrino experiments at Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory. This paper presents three analyses of interactions of 60 GeV/$c$ $\pi^+$ with thin, fixed carbon and beryllium targets. Integrated production and inelastic cross sections were measured for both of these reactions. In an analysis of strange, neutral hadron production, differential production multiplicities of $K^0_{S}$, $\Lambda$ and anti-$\Lambda$ were measured. Lastly, in an analysis of charged hadron production, differential production multiplicities of $\pi^+$, $\pi^-$, $K^+$, $K^-$ and protons were measured. These measurements will enable long-baseline neutrino experiments to better constrain predictions of their neutrino flux in order to achieve better precision on their neutrino cross section and oscillation measurements.

Abstract

This paper presents measurements of production cross sections and inelastic cross sections for the following reactions: 60 GeV/$c$ protons with C, Be, Al targets and 120 GeV/$c$ protons with C and Be targets. The analysis was performed using the NA61/SHINE spectrometer at the CERN SPS. First measurements were obtained using protons at 120 GeV/$c$, while the results for protons at 60 GeV/$c$ were compared with previously published measurements. These interaction cross section measurements are critical inputs for neutrino flux prediction in current and future accelerator-based long-baseline neutrino experiments.

Abstract

Results on $\phi$ meson production in inelastic p+p collisions at CERN SPS energies are presented. They are derived from data collected by the NA61/SHINE fixed target experiment, by means of invariant mass spectra fits in the $\phi \to K^+K^-$ decay channel. They include the first ever measured double differential spectra of $\phi$ mesons as a function of rapidity $y$ and transverse momentum $p_T$ for proton beam momenta of 80 GeV/c and 158 GeV/c, as well as single differential spectra of $y$ or $p_T$ for beam momentum of 40 GeV/c. The corresponding total $\phi$ yields per inelastic p+p event are obtained. These results are compared with existing data on $\phi$ meson production in p+p collisions. The comparison shows consistency but superior accuracy of the present measurements. The emission of $\phi$ mesons in p+p reactions is confronted with that occurring in Pb+Pb collisions, and the experimental results are compared with model predictions. It appears that none of the considered models can properly describe all the experimental observables.

16. Microsynt: Exploring the syntax of EEG microstates

Abstract

Microstates represent electroencephalographic (EEG) activity as a sequence of switching, transient, metastable states. Growing evidence suggests the useful information on brain states is to be found in the higher-order temporal structure of these sequences. Instead of focusing on transition probabilities, here we propose “Microsynt”, a method designed to highlight higher-order interactions that form a preliminary step towards understanding the syntax of microstate sequences of any length and complexity. Microsynt extracts an optimal vocabulary of “words” based on the length and complexity of the full sequence of microstates. Words are then sorted into classes of entropy and their representativeness within each class is statistically compared with surrogate and theoretical vocabularies. We applied the method on EEG data previously collected from healthy subjects undergoing propofol anesthesia, and compared their “fully awake” (BASE) and “fully unconscious” (DEEP) conditions. Results show that microstate sequences, even at rest, are not random but tend to behave in a more predictable way, favoring simpler sub-sequences, or “words”. Contrary to high-entropy words, lowest-entropy binary microstate loops are prominent and favored on average 10 times more than what is theoretically expected. Progressing from BASE to DEEP, the representation of low-entropy words increases while that of high-entropy words decreases. During the awake state, sequences of microstates tend to be attracted towards “A – B – C” microstate hubs, and most prominently A – B binary loops. Conversely, with full unconsciousness, sequences of microstates are attracted towards “C – D – E” hubs, and most prominently C – E binary loops, confirming the putative relation of microstates A and B to externally-oriented cognitive processes and microstate C and E to internally-generated mental activity. Microsynt can form a syntactic signature of microstate sequences that can be used to reliably differentiate two or more conditions.

Abstract

Measurements of the $\pi^{\pm}$, $K^{\pm}$, and proton double differential yields emitted from the surface of the 90-cm-long carbon target (T2K replica) were performed for the incoming 31 GeV/c protons with the NA61/SHINE spectrometer at the CERN SPS using data collected during 2010 run. The double differential $\pi^{\pm}$ yields were measured with increased precision compared to the previously published NA61/SHINE results, while the $K^{\pm}$ and proton yields were obtained for the first time. A strategy for dealing with the dependence of the results on the incoming proton beam profile is proposed. The purpose of these measurements is to reduce significantly the (anti)neutrino flux uncertainty in the T2K long-baseline neutrino experiment by constraining the production of (anti)neutrino ancestors coming from the T2K target., Comment: 43 pages, 55 figures

21. Recent results and future of the NA61/SHINE strong interactions program

Abstract

NA61/SHINE is a fixed target experiment at the CERN Super-Proton- Synchrotron. The main goals of the experiment are to discover the critical point of strongly interacting matter and study the properties of the onset of deconfnement. In order to reach these goals the collaboration studies hadron production properties in nucleus-nucleus, proton-proton and proton-nucleus interactions. In this talk, recent results on particle production in p+p interactions, as well as Be+Be and Ar+Sc collisions in the SPS energy range are reviewed. The results are compared with available world data. The future of the NA61/SHINE scientifc program is also presented.

Abstract

We present measurements of $\rho^0$, $\omega$ and K$^{*0}$ spectra in $\pi^{-} + $C production interactions at 158 GeV/c and $\rho^0$ spectra at 350 GeV/c using the NA61/SHINE spectrometer at the CERN SPS. Spectra are presented as a function of the Feynman's variable $x_\text{F}$ in the range $0 < x_\text{F} < 1$ and $0 < x_\text{F} < 0.5$ for 158 GeV/c and 350 GeV/c respectively. Furthermore, we show comparisons with previous measurements and predictions of several hadronic interaction models. Abstract

Measurements of inclusive spectra and mean multiplicities of $\pi^\pm$, K$^\pm$, p and $\bar{\textrm{p}}$ produced in inelastic p+p interactions at incident projectile momenta of 20, 31, 40, 80 and 158 GeV/c ($\sqrt{s} = $ 6.3, 7.7, 8.8, 12.3 and 17.3 GeV, respectively) were performed at the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron using the large acceptance NA61/SHINE hadron spectrometer. Spectra are presented as function of rapidity and transverse momentum and are compared to predictions of current models. The measurements serve as the baseline in the NA61/SHINE study of the properties of the onset of deconfinement and search for the critical point of strongly interacting matter.

Abstract

Evidence suggests that the stream of consciousness is parsed into transient brain states manifesting themselves as discrete spatiotemporal patterns of global neuronal activity. Electroencephalographical (EEG) microstates are proposed as the neurophysiological correlates of these transiently stable brain states that last for fractions of seconds. To further understand the link between EEG microstate dynamics and consciousness, we continuously recorded high-density EEG in 23 surgical patients from their awake state to unconsciousness, induced by step-wise increasing concentrations of the intravenous anesthetic propofol. Besides the conventional parameters of microstate dynamics, we introduce a new implementation of a method to estimate the complexity of microstate sequences. The brain activity under the surgical anesthesia showed a decreased sequence complexity of the stereotypical microstates, which became sparser and longer-lasting. However, we observed an initial increase in microstates’ temporal dynamics and complexity with increasing depth of sedation leading to a distinctive “U-shape” that may be linked to the paradoxical excitation induced by moderate levels of propofol. Our results support the idea that the brain is in a metastable state under normal conditions, balancing between order and chaos in order to flexibly switch from one state to another. The temporal dynamics of EEG microstates indicate changes of this critical balance between stability and transition that lead to altered states of consciousness.

Abstract

Objetivo: elaborar um modelo técnico-assistencial de enfermagem para pacientes de transplante renal. Método: desenvolvimento de modelo técnico-assistencial fundamentado nas teorias de Orem e Watson baseado na pesquisa convergente assistencial. O cenário foi um Centro Transplantador da região sul do Brasil. Coleta de dados - diagnóstico das atividades realizadas no serviço de transplante renal; entrevista semiestruturada com pacientes; e três grupos focais com enfermeiros. Participaram nove pacientes de transplante renal e dez enfermeiros que atuam nas fases do perioperatório. Utilizou-se análise de conteúdo.Resultados: categorias emergidas dos pacientes - expectativas do transplante renal; informação sobre o tratamento após transplante; mudança no estilo de vida após o adoecimento; importância do autocuidado; sentimentos envolvidos no transplante renal e melhorias do centro transplantador. Conclusão: o modelo desenvolvido foi fundamentado nas teorias de Watson e Orem contemplando integralidade, promoção do autocuidado e atuação do enfermeiro, bem como necessidades apontadas pelos pacientes.

A comunicação com familiares e enfermos internados em Unidade de Tratamento Intensivo (UTI) apresenta-se como essencial no processo de cuidado, empatia e acolhimento. Este texto teve como objetivo relatar a experiência de enfermeiras que atuam em uma Organização de Procura de Órgãos (OPO) no Estado do Rio Grande do Sul, frente ao acolhimento de familiares que recebem a comunicação de situação crítica e morte, durante o primeiro semestre de 2020, em hospitais de abrangência dessa OPO. Este período compreendeu a chegada da COVID-19 no Estado e consequentemente mudanças nas rotinas de assistência aos parentes internados e na comunicação com seus familiares. Foi possível observar que no período analisado, houve muitas mudanças, como visitas suspensas ou realizadas via web, notícias concedidas por telefone e, velórios sendo suspensos ou com limitação de tempo e pessoas, resultando em angústia e desespero por parte dos familiares por não conseguirem se despedir do seu ente querido. Abstract

Brycon hilarii is a neotropical fish whose population in rivers is being threatened by overfishing, construction of hydroelectric dams, transposition of riverbeds, and pollution. Fundamental knowledge of the reproductive characteristics of this species is necessary to enable its breeding in captivity, for aquaculture as well as for biological conservation. The aim of this study was to investigate and describe the sperm parameters, their correlations, and relevant factors, and how these issues can affect sperm quality in B. hilarii. Sperm was collected after hormonal induction using carp pituitary homogenate. Spermatozoa concentration, total length, motility, and percentage of normal cells were measured to be 2.85 × 109 cells mL−1, 40.28 µm, 68.1%, and 51.6%, respectively. Tail abnormalities were most frequent; however, head abnormalities were closely related to practically all sperm kinetic parameters. Present results suggest that these abnormalities affect motility and movement kinetics, and modifying the pattern of sperm cell movement, sinuosity of movement and vigor. The potential application of this study in aquaculture management of B. hilarii is crucial for the artificial reproduction of fish and represents a significant contribution to the knowledge of its reproductive biology, facilitating the reproduction of the species.

Este artigo tem por objetivo investigar como Hildegard Rosenthal - uma fotógrafa imigrante - capturou um grupo específico de habitantes/ocupantes da cidade de São Paulo em 1940: os jovens trabalhadores que exerciam suas atividades na urbe paulistana. Para isso, utilizamos três fotografias e para a análise ser efetiva, empregamos um método baseado em duas etapas, sendo a primeira: "Processos técnicos fotográficos", e o segundo momento: "Processos interpretativos fotográficos". Como conclusões, compreendemos que os registros da fotógrafa nos auxiliam a compreender os mundos do trabalho da década de 1940 e, além disso, nos provoca incômodos e faz refletir sobre a situação específica desse grupo retratado - jovens, maioria não brancos, de classe baixa, que exerciam suas atividades remuneradas de maneira informal, sem mecanismos de seguridade social.

Com o confronto entre Israel e Palestina ocorrido em maio de 2021, os membros do Conselho de Segurança das Nações Unidas (CSNU) se reuniram para discutir a questão, como costuma ocorrer quando há ameaças à paz mundial. Com isso, o artigo tem por objetivo comparar os posicionamentos dos países membros permanentes do CSNU — sendo eles Estados Unidos, China, França, Reino Unido e Rússia. Assim, estabeleceu-se quatro variáveis a serem comparadas, referentes aos discursos e à relação dos países com os atores do conflito, a fim de analisar a neutralidade desses membros do CSNU. Concluiu-se que os discursos dos países não eram neutros, com a maioria tendendo a se alinhar com Israel, além de mostrarem relutância em tomar medidas mais drásticas para acabar com o conflito.

A morte apresenta-se na vida de todos como parte de um ciclo que é inevitável, desenrolando-se de forma distinta para cada indivíduo. O preparo do profissional da Saúde durante o período de graduação colabora para a orientação dos graduandos frente à situação de morte e luto, minimizando o sentimento de frustração diante da perda. Para isso, o docente pode contar com o auxílio de metodologias ativas, que visam a transportar o discente para situações mais próximas das que serão vividas. Objetiva-se, neste trabalho, relatar a experiência de professores ao abordar o tema morte em pediatria, com alunos do quinto período do curso de graduação em Enfermagem – Bacharelado de um centro universitário de Porto Alegre/RS. Foi possível identificar o despreparo e o medo dos discentes para falar na morte, expondo a necessidade de um trabalho contínuo e projetado para retomar, durante toda a formação, as situações de morte e luto.
