- Abstract
This study provides empirical evidence on preservice teachers' (PSTs) dispositions by surveying them on topics of educational policy in their first required course for a teacher preparation program in one mid-sized public university. Our survey used the same questions as did the Ed Next/Harvard Program on Education Policy and Governance poll, which was administered nationally both to the general public and to public school teachers. The goal was to understand PSTs' dispositions when they enter teacher education programs. Results of the survey indicate that dispositions and attitudes of PSTs reflect a belief that schools are doing well and that PSTs are neutral with respect to many major educational policies. These findings suggest that students are entering teacher preparation programs with largely positive views of schooling and a general lack of knowledge about educational policy and teachers' working conditions. We provide several implications for teacher education and teacher educators who look to disrupt rather than reproduce structural inequalities.

We present a global atlas of 4,728 metagenomic samples from mass-transit systems in 60 cities over 3 years, representing the first systematic, worldwide catalog of the urban microbial ecosystem. This atlas provides an annotated, geospatial profile of microbial strains, functional characteristics, antimicrobial resistance (AMR) markers, and genetic elements, including 10,928 viruses, 1,302 bacteria, 2 archaea, and 838,532 CRISPR arrays not found in reference databases. We identified 4,246 known species of urban microorganisms and a consistent set of 31 species found in 97% of samples that were distinct from human commensal organisms. Profiles of AMR genes varied widely in type and density across cities. Cities showed distinct microbial taxonomic signatures that were driven by climate and geographic differences. These results constitute a high-resolution global metagenomic atlas that enables discovery of organisms and genes, highlights potential public health and forensic applications, and provides a culture-independent view of AMR burden in cities.

- Abstract
Although disinfection is key to infection control, the colonization patterns and resistomes of hospital-environment microbes remain underexplored. We report the first extensive genomic characterization of microbiomes, pathogens and antibiotic resistance cassettes in a tertiary-care hospital, from repeated sampling (up to 1.5 years apart) of 179 sites associated with 45 beds. Deep shotgun metagenomics unveiled distinct ecological niches of microbes and antibiotic resistance genes characterized by biofilm-forming and human-microbiome-influenced environments with corresponding patterns of spatiotemporal divergence. Quasi-metagenomics with nanopore sequencing provided thousands of high-contiguity genomes, phage and plasmid sequences (>60% novel), enabling characterization of resistome and mobilome diversity and dynamic architectures in hospital environments. Phylogenetics identified multidrug-resistant strains as being widely distributed and stably colonizing across sites. Comparisons with clinical isolates indicated that such microbes can persist in hospitals for extended periods (>8 years), to opportunistically infect patients. These findings highlight the importance of characterizing antibiotic resistance reservoirs in hospitals and establish the feasibility of systematic surveys to target resources for preventing infections. Spatiotemporal characterization of microbial diversity and antibiotic resistance in a tertiary-care hospital reveals broad distribution and persistence of antibiotic-resistant organisms that could cause opportunistic infections in a healthcare setting.

11. Generating Tests to Verify Machine Descriptions

- Abstract
With the ending of Moore's Law, people are increasingly turning to other ways to leverage performance. x86 has been an industry standard for decades, but in recent years RISC ISAs like ARM and specialized hardware like FPGAs and GPUs are becoming widely used. Because of this, the already labor-intensive task of porting an operating system to different hardware needs a better solution. One possible approach to making porting easier is code synthesis through machine-level and semantic descriptions of hardware. Therefore, it is crucial that machine descriptions accurately reflect the hardware that they attempt to describe. Given a machine description, we generate a suite of tests that, when executed on the target platform, provides assurance that the description accurately reflects the platform's expected behavior.

- Abstract
Purpose: To examine whether parental emotional abuse increases the odds of adolescent suicide attempts and to assess effect modification by sexual identity., Methods: The 2021 Adolescent Behaviors and Experiences Survey, a cross-sectional nationally representative online survey of 7,705 US high-school students conducted by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, was used to estimate self-reported parental emotional abuse (exposure) and to examine its relationship with suicide attempt in the past 12 months (outcome). We also assessed sexual orientation as an effect modifier. Univariable and multivariable logistic regression models were used to estimate odds of suicide attempt. We assessed multiplicative effect modification by sexual identity using an interaction term and additive effect modification by estimating the relative excess risk due to interaction., Results: The majority of the high school students surveyed, identified as heterosexual (77.4%), while the remaining 22.6% identified as lesbian, gay, bisexual, questioning or other (LGBQ). Adolescents reporting parental emotional abuse were three times more likely to report attempted suicide in the past 12 months compared to those without abuse (adjusted odds ratio 3.46, 95% confidence interval 2.50-4.79). Adolescents who identified as LGBQ and reported parental emotional abuse had 10 times higher odds of attempted suicide compared to heterosexual peers without exposure to parental abuse (adjusted odds ratio 10.93, 95% confidence interval 7.28-16.42)., Discussion: Suicide is a leading cause of death for adolescents and parental emotional abuse may be contributing to suicidality among adolescents, particularly LGBQ youth., (Copyright © 2024 Society for Adolescent Health and Medicine.
